Not sure which install you're using? If you have system_health enabled you can check Configuration -> Info, or see the following.

  • If you're using HassOS, flashed an image, or booted a VM with an image you're using #330990055533576204

  • If you installed Linux and then ran a script to install HA and have add-ons then you have #330944238910963714

  • If you're running docker commands or use a Docker manager and have no add-ons then you have #449717345808547842

  • Finally, if you use pip to install or upgrade you have #551864459891703809

Having difficulty chosing an install method? See this blog post for guidance.

clever mortar
#

See the blog for what they all are

stable flint
#

also can supervised be managed with systemd?

clever mortar
#

no

#

Each channel has an ADR explaining them in the pinned messages there

stable flint
#

also sorry, one last question; do you personally prefer core or supervised?

clever mortar
#

Supervised is the method that requires the most skill and experience

#

Only use it if you're at home managing Docker and Linux

stable flint

hmm im ok at linux so ill just stick with core

thanks for explaining btw

I think that's only used for the google app (since google would not allow the use of Home Assistant)

deft pewter

The UI is getting amazing. I haven't been paying attention for a few versions and I stumbled upon the hints that devtools > Templates gives now re which states a template will observe (and even when a template might not trigger).

Finally - home network question. Just bought a house, 3000 square feet but lots of rooms. Most rooms wired with cat6, and I have symmetric fiber line plus TONS of smart home devices. I need a new network system; my netgear switch doesnt have enough ethernet ports, and the crappy wifi network can't handle the load. Recs for a home network? Would like Unifi, but reaally want something that is "future proof enough" e.g. i can addd wifi 6 access points later.

pastel surge

Yeah i had a spare rpi so i wanted to give it a shot before buying a new one

dull chasm
#

unifi all the way ...

clever mortar
#

To be honest, any managed switches and APs will do

#

Unifi is one choice, but there's a lot of options

wanton bobcat
#

I want Unifi, but I have no idea whatsoever what components to buy. I hear dream machine etc etc but want to make sure what I'm buying could theoretically support wifi 6 access points when those become a "thing"

clever mortar

A mix of stuff, no Unifi ๐Ÿ˜‰

dull chasm

Various Zyxel smart switches, a handful of dumb switches, and some Asus ZenWifi units for WiFi

wanton bobcat

wanton bobcat

@wet pilot - eight rooms/separate spaces (technically a 5/3 house though, upstairs and downtairs), 3000 square feet total. Hard-wired I need 12 ethernet ports, and on wifi I will have 50-60 devices in total. Lots of z-wave (ring alarm, hue bulbs, smart locks) devicecs as well, if that influences anything.

tidal bronze

You should be fine with unifi

I know we should all expect it but I still can't believe how shitty people are with DMCA takedowns.

#

That code isn't illegal. Code is just knowledge. They should just ask that the owner doesn't share compiled copies.

light trout
#

They used some not so legal materials in the tests for it if I'm not mistaken

dusky plank
#

well to be fair they used copyright material explicit in their how-toโ€˜s so that was a bit shady but everything else ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

odd kindle
#

It's a tricky field. They did things that were breaking laws with the code

deft pewter
#

Sure, people may have used the code in ways that RIAA or whoever doesn't like. Doesn't make the code illegal.

#

Fix the issues, don't take a sledgehammer to a nut.

odd kindle
#

I agree, but since when are lawyers known to be reasonable?

deft pewter
#

It's essentially censorship at that point. 'I don't like what that code says' is pretty much the same as 'I don't like what that book says'... and book burning wouldn't go down well.

dusky plank
#

there will always pop up 10 alternatives if something technical on the internet is taken down, just have a look at silkroad

deft pewter
#

Yeah. I'm glad there will always be alternatives.

odd kindle
#

It's also far more tricky, since some rulings have shown that publishing torrent files are illegal. The act of making it possible to break the law by downloading/sharing the content is in itself illegal

deft pewter
#

The UK courts had fun trying to block access to TPB a few years back. All it did was encourage the site owners to come up with automated mirrors each time one was blocked.

odd kindle
#

I'm not saying I agree with those rulings, just that they exist

deft pewter
#

If by publishing torrent files, you mean sharing copyrighted materials... yes, that should be illegal.

odd kindle
#

And github have to follow it

deft pewter
#

If you were just sharing the code for a hypothetical torrent client, there's no crime.

odd kindle
#

@deft pewter I refer to TPB for example. They only hold the information about how to break copyright laws

#

but that in itself is against the law

deft pewter
#

Hell, torrents themselves aren't criminal. It's only the sharing of copyrighted material that is in many places.

odd kindle
#

no, that's the point I'm making

deft pewter
#

In the UK, for example, downloading copyrighted materials is technically okay. You're only breaking the law when you share.

odd kindle
#

it's somewhat illegal to have a torrent site (I forget the name for it)

dusky plank
#

facebook used to use torrents for deploying all over the world in minimum time

odd kindle
#

as was shown in the TPB verdict

deft pewter
#

I really doubt it's illegal. If it is, it's another sledgehammer, tbh.

odd kindle
#

Obviously different laws apply in different countries tho

deft pewter
#

The problem is that a site owner for something like TPB would be expected to manage the torrents and remote any copyrighted stuff, which they don't.

light trout
#

Dell uses it for driver packs

odd kindle
#

@deft pewter the founders of TPB got jail time

deft pewter
#

Any number of large businesses use it to legitimately share files.

#

@deft pewter the founders of TPB got jail time
@odd kindle I'm not oblivious to these things. I know what went down. But it's not as simple as 'torrents bad'.

#

Torrents themselves are an amazing technology and have legitimate uses.

odd kindle
#

They got jail time because they hadn't shown a willingness to remove copyrighted material from their site

#

So, in a sense making it possible to download copyrighted material have been ruled illegal.

deft pewter
#

You don't see other legal businesses being issued court orders and handed out jail time, do you? It's because they have the right to distribute whatever it is they're distributing.

odd kindle
#

Much in the same way as youtube-dl makes it possible to download copyrighted material.

#

I'm not saying I think this is ok

deft pewter
#

They didn't 'make it possible'. They maintained a directory of links to copyrighted material.

odd kindle
#

It's absolutley fucked up, BUT it's whats been argued in sweden

deft pewter
#

uTorrent haven't been taken to court. They make it possible.

dusky plank
#

thereโ€˜s even a GIT over torrents now

deft pewter
#

This all comes back to my initial point that the code/tech isn't the problem. It's the way that some people use it.

#

Censor the code and you're just preventing sharing of knowledge.

deft pewter
#

Illegal!

Did they revert to direct downloads? I don't really pay much attention to the traffic, I only care that it downloads.

subtle pasture

I mean, ISPs at the time certainly tried to say that, but the protocol itself is perfectly legal, and plenty of services today use it

deft pewter

Yeah, it's legit. I'm all for it.

subtle pasture

Blizzard's download client is still based on bittorrent tech

clear ferry
#

I installed a 740 node HPC cluster with bittorrent in 2007, if memory serves right it took 35 minutes

#

Which was awzm

subtle pasture
#

@deft pewter That's some weird propaganda to be spreading

subtle pasture
#

By that logic, any use of any protocol is breaking the law, because they can all be used maliciously by malicious actors

deft pewter
#

I think they just misunderstand the law. They were claiming that TPB is illegal because it uses torrents. They missed the point that it's illegal because it willingly encourages the sharing of copyrighted materials.

subtle pasture
#

TPB is still an interesting legal gray area, because they literally host nothing

deft pewter
#

It all stemmed from a discussion about the DMCA takedown of that YouTube ripper tool. The code isn't illegal, the usage of the tool might be.

subtle pasture
#

They don't even host .torrent files, they just have magnet links to everything

deft pewter
#

Yeah, doesn't stop people chasing TPB though.

I love how TPB has become a hydra now ๐Ÿ˜„

#

Oh, you want to ban a host? Here's 12 more.

e'yup, it's an impossible game of whack-a-mole

They experimented with host TPB on bittorrent, at one point

Distributed hosting
