Hey, looking to do some under cabinet LEDs as DIY project and have never worked with LeD strips before. Been doing research and I get power consumption stuff and getting correct transformer for given strip length. What I am struggling with is how to drive the white temperature controls, everything I read is about RGB strips and RGBW. Since tunable whites is 2 white LEDs is just 2 can I use a rgb controller and just use 2 channels or do I need specific diver to control the 2 white channels?
i wonder if you could roll them like dice. does it have an orientation sensor?
that'd be kinda fun
Try #diy-archived @rustic jasper
..and be perfectly balanced
It does know which face you flip it to.
@low harness I'm using rotation to dim lights
They should make a pyramid where it's the part facing down which is active. Also would be more dangerous for falling or stepping on...add a little spice to things
Lego is nicer
ouch
I'm not sure but I think the forecast for 81.000000000001 inches of rain might be a little off
I love that one
there's one that goes on and on about the following days of drinking too
Any Grafana gods around? I am trying to create a table from queries into an InfluxDB, but whatever I do I cannot get it to look right...
The good folk of #analytics-archived might be able to help.
That's the data nerd corner.
We are just regular nerds in here, when we go to other channels our nerd morphs into other types
Questions regarding booting HA with a RPI4 from a SSD, what channel should I ask in?
@burnt plover Not sure which install you're using? If you have system_health enabled you can check Configuration -> Info, or see the following.
-
If you're using HassOS, flashed an image, or booted a VM with an image you're using #330990055533576204
-
If you installed Linux and then ran a script to install HA and have add-ons then you have #330944238910963714
-
If you're running
dockercommands or use a Docker manager and have no add-ons then you have #449717345808547842 -
Finally, if you use
pipto install or upgrade you have #551864459891703809

Great, thanks
oh I need to buy some more SSDs.... but its SSDs or more light and sensors
budgeting sucks

@strange vapor budget
wife
I got her fully on board with automation but there are limits
If the problem is that your partner thinks you spend too much, the trick is to buy them nice things too.
Or time your purchases to coincide with a large purchase of their own.
And you'll both enjoy them equally ๐
Feels like you got the better end of that deal. You benefit from both.
I bought a pair of underwear and the wife bought herself a new car.. see it all works
Must've been some expensive Y-fronts.
I wanted a snickers bar but we couldn't afford the house she wanted

@deft pewter Im going to buy her a n apple watch 6 ๐

I asked for one for christmas and so did she

I haven't worn a watch in over a decade
I haven't worn a watch since March.
If I never leave the house, I don't need to know the time.
thought about getting a smart watch but figured it'd end up just in the drawer
Yeah, if you don't already regularly wear a watch, a smartwatch is probably a bad idea.
you do not care for one until you realize how much you look at your phone for notifications
heh same, I use mine to control the home
I loved having OTP on my wrist so I didn't have to take my phone out of my pocket all day at work.
there's an HA App on the samsung store ๐
I bought an inexpensive Chinese automatic watch to see if I could get back into wearing a watch
but alas
I installed mobile electronics for 3ish years
well I often don't take mine off because I also use the sleep tracker
after the second time I got my hand stuck in/behind a dash, I took off the watch and didn't put it back on
I get a picture notification every time some one parks in my reserved parking spot so I can get the satisfaction of towing their ass
I installed mobile electronics for 3ish years
telecom installer for 19 years so yeah feel you on that
after the second time I got my hand stuck in/behind a dash, I took off the watch and didn't put it back on
I once welded my watch to a wrench in a battery box
I want the apple watch 6 due to blood oxygen monitor + sleep tracking?
because some moron flipped the breaker with my hands in there
plus faster always on your wrist voice assistant

Please say you continued to wear the watch with the wrench attached.

Anyone know if there's a way to check if your IP is on a CGNAT range?
Just updated to 0.114.0, love the darkmode! Even with the fact that I got blinded 1 minute after that by opening node-red๐
I wanna get a Roborock but they just seem near impossible to find.
Might just grab an Xiaomi Mi vacuum instead instead of waiting weeks for a Roborock to appear used somewhere
Same thing @errant bough, just different branding. You set the Roborocks up in the Mi Home app.
They're great, but the discontinuing of the S5 range is a bit of a bummer.
I wanted the S4 but it seems like I'll just need to grab an Xiaomi one off Aliexpress. The only thing on Canadian Amazon is those $200 generic brand ones
Anyone know if there's a way to check if your IP is on a CGNAT range?
yes, check your WAN IP
and see if it's on a private range
Erm can someone help... so when trying to sign into home assistant forums for help I went to change password but to change password I need a 2 step code which was never setup?
@shy comet this heat is crazy or what?
Same. 10 to 12 hours all 3 units.
rolling blackouts in CA handle that for me ๐

I've been killing time aligning SUBS and fine tuning crossovers. Pissed I started this again. Never ends.
Probably 200 plus readings. ๐
omg lol
Trying to dial in for every seat is a task. But then again no one in the house would care if there's a dip at 77hz. LMAO.
hahah
Are you using Rew?
yea it is a joke on certain content
you konw what else is a joke? when you see a 4k bluray release that lacks 3d audio
I never do much with sub other then phase and xover. Placement for null/modes where possible
looking at you Pitch Black
"marketing"
@wild grove I am pretty picky on subs to main smooth handoff.
Fronts are FS.
I'm sure I need to tune my 7.1 better
I dunno if I trust these tuning mics tho

7.1? time for 5.1.2 ๐
UMIK is pretty good
well my AVR can do 7.2
7.2.4 people
I run. 7.4.4
5.1.2 is plenty enough for the size of my lounge room ๐
But I'm too scared to cut holes in ceiling
hey I only just got an A/V receiver again after my Onkyo blew up
Awww I loved my old obkyo
No Atmos ?
LOL @130w per channel
Square! Any treatments?
I would do 5.1.2 over 7.x any day.
yeah I have Atmos
You said 7.1
๐
LOL
7.1 is not Atmos ๐
What did your replace onkyo with

i have a Onkyo TX-NR777 here
7.1 is not Atmos ๐
@tidal bronze but that's what Im currently configured for
Huh.
I had the dtc 9.8 then upgraded for a 4k path
How many max channels processing ?
One of my favorite automations is an alert when motion is seen outside kids rooms when ht is on
I have a Sony STR-DN1080. More than enough for what I needed, despite not having Audyssey. Still rocking some 10+ year old DALI Concept speakers (8s for front, center, sub, 2s for rears).
Get a warning ? ๐ @wild grove
quadflight Im not sure looking in manual
I never heard dali but look nice
Nothing like time aligning subs to main with REW. Best thing ever.
I've got some not too bad Onkyo speakers on this Denon
If you are 7.1 I would definitely go 5.1.2
@tidal bronze I done have the patience. Make house calls?
Gives the result in ft or seconds. Plug it in to AVR done.
All pre 80hz dips can be fixed just with alignment
Anthems arc is pretty decent would be cool to compare
Not like REW I hear.
Will check it out
If you are 7.1 I would definitely go 5.1.2
@tidal bronze well at least that's shortening the speaker cables not lengthening them
Measure subs 20-200, power off subs measure fronts, time alightment at 80hz and bam. ๐ @wild grove
I still haven't set up Zone 2 yet I was toying with taking those speaking for front channels in the bedroom
but meh
I run zone 2 and 3 on both AVRs but line level for external amps.
well I'm trying to keep a receiver/amp OUT of the bedroom LOL
Sweet thanks for ss
@lucid dock I have my AVR back integrated if you still want me to check some things for you ๐
Hi, has anyone had any joy with controlling home assistant via an android wear os watch? I'm trying to think of the best way to do it. Is there an app? A custom panel?
Actually I have a question about that!
With a tizen watch, controlling your smarthome, do you need to wake watch, go to app, press button do do something?
Or can you just to it with a single button push when the screen is off?
I typically use alexa from my watch but if not I use the app
Do you need to wake the watch to use either of those? This is basically the only thing thats held me back from buying a tizen watch
Really hard to find an answer without owning one
Ah, press button once --> speak, thats OK, thats pretty much what I do with wear OS right now
Thanks for that
np
I think @tidal bronze has an android wear device
Well, if anyone who has one could point me in the right direction it would be much appreciated
that's a lot of shit
Much of it is redundant between the two
mirrors upon mirrors of the same single 200kb jpeg picture of his mom
Both SHR-2, plus a lot is in the cloud. Iโm not losing shit, ever
what model?
1515+ plus the 5-bay adder and an 1819+
damn
I've just got a single 1512+
I just restarted the stuff I shut down while it was rebuilding and the CPU's not happy
what cloud backup are you using?
The 1515+ has been replaced twice due to the stupid Atom 2538 processor issue (it just dies and doesnโt start again), but other than that I love them
Crash plan
I've had zero problems with mine
$10/month per machine, multi platform including headless, unlimited data
two of my drives started reporting bad sectors and failed writes so I just swapped all of 'em
Best deal going
Yes. You could always use servers headless, but they kept making it more difficult. Then they switched to Crashplan for Small Business and got rid of Home entirely
I just run a Docker instance of Crashplan Pro now
you do newsgroups?
I looked into everything a couple of years ago and nothing else came close
I used to, but stopped once it seemed like everything was blocked
I used to run all my services (DNS, DHCP, VPN, etc) on the Synology until the Atom debacle. It has a really nice interface
Both of mine are 16GB
Itโs kinda my base for any computing equipment these days
MASSIVE MEMORY
Crashplan wants a lot of RAM for many TB of data uploaded
And I just donโt want to open it again. Easier on the 1819+, a pain on the 1515+
Yeah, spend the $100 or whatever and never worry again
odd that all the new stuff seems to be even numbers of drives
Better for a RAID config perhaps
I guess if you're not doing hot spares
Although SHR throws a lot of that out the window. Itโs really flexible
My coworker also has an 1819+ and he added like 3 drives to his existing array and was dismayed to find that it didnโt increase his capacity at all.
RAID math is funny. Always consult a simulator before buying more drives ๐
I replaced all 3TB with 12TB
Wow. 8 was the biggest reasonable ones when I built out my 1819
was like $15/gb
The problem I kept running into was buying cold spares of the current size, then upgrading when the price came down. Now Iโm stuck with a bunch of unused tiny drives ๐
Whatโs a 2TB drive even good for ๐
Not a gamer, and my Macs either have built in NVMe or SSDs
So they gather dust in the march to worthlessness
Lol
I have so many devices like that

I havenโt had a drive go bad in years, and I have a lot of spinning drives. Theyโve improved considerably.
Used to be a once or twice a year thing, and I used to RMA them in
SMART stats on the drives that were starting to get sketchy said they got put in the array 10 years ago
I've got a bunch of 500GB 2.5" drives
I'll probably just trash them when I get around to it
If you have a PS3 or PS4 that still runs that might be an upgrade for them
I use one when I want to make a local Timemachine backup when updating my MacBook or reimaging it. Thatโs about it
Hi guys/girls...just joined this channel....and just started with homeassistant in combination with some shellies plugs and smart bulbs and sonos..so far looking good ๐
It's a disease
When I tell normal people I have 50 devices they look shocked
But I'm only padawan level
They breed, I tell you
I'm sure a lot of people here have 250+
I've only got about 80 or so all in, but it depends on where you draw the line on what's for HA and what isn't
is there a int devicecount ?
What?
Last I checked that wasn't large enough to hold anything useful, overflows all over the place
Nah, you clearly want an unsigned long long.
I prefer a double
Still only 64 bits, right? Barely enough to count your devices.
There's a long double? ๐ฎ
{{ states.switch | count }} = 56
{{ states.binary_sensor | count }} = 25
{{ states.sensor | count }} = 252 ```
uint it is
I consider a device anything that is a real world device that is registered in HA and can give or take commands or give data
So sensors, lights, media players, alarms, covers
I wouldn't count stuff tracked in unifi register etc
@light trout updated to 0.115.0.dev20200819 ๐
Nice! ๐
When I tell normal people I have 50 devices they look shocked
I have 19 sonoffs installed and I'm getting close to 50 total
Hello folks!...I'm a recent addition to the HomeAssistant world and love the tool.....it appears, however, that I locked my cloud account....how do I go about unlocking?

@clever mortar the OSI really forgot that one
does this only happen when being home or also when on the road? the latter would be kind of unfortunate
NO HOME ASSISTANT SUPPORT HERE (look at the other channels for that). NO POLITICS OR RELIGION!
BE CIVIL to one another or get BANNED permanently.
didnโt feel like this was a aupport question, stupid me
not really a support/technical/HA query, more hoping for second ideas! so in my hallway, I have ceiling lights similar-ish to these.... https://www.diy.com/departments/tornado-blue-led-chrome-effect-6-lamp-spotlight-plate/109459_BQ.prd. I'd put in smart GU10s - until I realised that the blue accent LEDs remains on when power is on - so if I turn off the GU10s via software, the accent LEDs remains on. Any ideas, short of getting an electrician out & doing something - be it to replace the plate with something else or to disconnect the accent LEDs? I did briefly consider taping over the accent LEDs with opaque tape (e.g. duck tape) but that's ugly & the LEDs would still be drawing power... ๐ค
I'd open it up and disconnect the LEDs
Or replace it with something that doesn't require eye-bleach ๐
@clever mortar 240V & not "competent" (although I did have a look see the other day ๐ - didn't touch anything though! Just to look - there's a transformer of some sort - I think to pull it down to 12V for the diodes?)
#diy-archived may be able to help you, maybe - but you'll be opening it up to find out
Yeah - in any case, technically not "competent" so I'd likely be invalidating my home insurance if I tried to DIY it unfortunately
(even though it would be a dead easy job)
Ok, so... you want a solution, that doesn't require any skills?
Tape, or replace it with something else then
Yeah.... ๐คท Ah well, was hoping there'd be yet another option I'd overlooked, ha
TBH, opening it up and having a look is pretty safe. I've poked inside many things and I'm no electrician
Best case it's obvious, or with pictures somebody can guide you
Yep - like I say, I've already peeked & it looks easy enough. But at the end of the day, I'm in the UK & mains is 220V
Worst case, you take it back and buy something else
Yeah, so am I ๐
220V isn't that big a deal, wait until you poke inside some multi-phase stuff ๐
๐ฑ
It's more likely I'd go & replace the downlighters anyway - the chrome + accent LEDs is a little tacky, ha. But something for a rainy day <looks outside> ๐
I wouldn't worry about the 'competent' rules. If your IQ is above 80, you're probably okay.
You just need to follow sensible precautions like isolating circuits before you put your fingers in things, and making safe and secure connections.
And don't short anything...
@deft pewter I guess I'm just cautious due to the fact we're talking 220V plus the risks of invalidating my insurance
Also, from repeated experience I can tell you that a modern house with breakers is pretty safe to screw things up on
You're hardly going to screw up a 12V circuit so badly you burn your house down.
I've popped those more than once when I've got things wrong, including when my 240V LED strip shorted and caught fire
I did get yelled at for that one - but then I got yelled at when I forgot to turn the power off and got a gentle shock
Heh. May post in #diy-archived or on Reddit then after I've got pics of the internals of the chrome panel
The only time I was slightly worried I'd done something wrong was when replacing a light fixture. I'd isolated the mains while there was still a bulb in, so I knew there was no power... but still got a tingly hand when I brushed against something ๐ฎ
Well, I know from experience that UK mains is enough to spot weld if you get the right kind of short...
I've also got "tingles" from when to adjacent items on different phases weren't correctly earthed. That was ... interesting
Yep
I've gotten a few tingles working in boxes too, but apparently when you tell people you are working on electrics and you turned off the breaker, they think that means "oh turn on the breaker"
I now turn off the OUTSIDE main breaker as well.
This is why these things have lockouts, at least in a commercial setting
Actually, even my home fusebox supports being padlocked
well here in the UK (at least in my home), the wiring does tend to be to a better standard so circuit breakers do actually shut off the electricity (at least I'd hope!)
You're supposed to test that, at least at the fusebox, regularly.
Actually, even my home fusebox supports being padlocked
@clever mortar yeah mine supports it too, but as I was working actively on electrics I tend not to lock the box
I never do, I let my screwups do that testing
well here in the UK (at least in my home), the wiring does tend to be to a better standard so circuit breakers do actually shut off the electricity (at least I'd hope!)
UK wiring doesn't count, you can shut that off at the switch also LOL
@steel crag that is true - especially in the case of ceiling lights
This is why you leave the light switch turned on so that when you isolate the mains, you can look at the bulb and see it's now off.
Bonus points if you leave the light in another room switched on as a backup.
Even when the light you're working on is disconnected, you'll know if the mains goes back on because another light illuminates.
ghosts don't inhabit my flat - at least I hope not!
Even when the light you're working on is disconnected, you'll know if the mains goes back on because another light illuminates.
yeah I normally would have them all off, but wasn't at my house was trying to get fans working at a volunteer camp
Still a good precaution to take. Get in the habit of having redundant checks.
I left a spotter at the breaker box too but he fucked off to talk to some chick
oh but trust me the person who flipped the breaker spent 2 weeks with no fans in their room, so I got my own back
๐
And taking these kind of precautions are what makes someone competent vs just some idiot poking a screwdriver at live wires.
Or some ex idiot
I always walk around with one of these when doing electrical work: https://www.kleintools.com/catalog/electrical-testers/non-contact-voltage-tester-pen-50-1000-volts

my coworkers find it amusing that I even bother to turn off the breaker when working on an electrical box
I used to work with a sparkie who'd worked in power stations. The tales he told me taught me that electricity is not your friend.

@clever mortar depending on the conditions, it's also a good way to turn nearby humans into far away humans in a hurry

Virtual Home Assistant. Control your home in VR while you live in VR
so.. how do people handle name schemas for all sensors/devices ?
and .. groups
i guess if groups were configurable from UI i would treat devices (such a bulbs) as cattle not pets
It varies, a lot, and there's a few hundred/thousand responses in the history across the channels here
Personally I go with most significant to least significant, for example light.kitchen_table_left
VR is pretty neat already and next gen will be amazing. We might need HA for our virtual homes soon ๐
just configured fail2ban. i like fail2ban
yeah, that should pretty much be installed by default on all distro's

I just SSH'ed into my HA and I noticed my ping times went from 4ms to 6ms, anyway to fix this? I don't wanna share logs or listen tho
I just had to deal with a me
Is it any interest with community discount on smarthome products on ebay stores etc? I have asked around for bulk deals on some products, and he asked if its possible to give community discounts. I have no idea who to ask about this
well I guess that would depend on the regions also, we are spread all around the world ....
this wouldn't benefit me any I don't think because I'd still probably be the only one in The Bahamas ordering anything ๐
I guess it regard everyone as its an ebay store that send with dhl as standard
dont want to mention the store name before I know its ok
Open a post on the forum about it, that's fine. Just be very clear about where in the world etc ๐
I think that I will just order for him to see that he send good products, then ask him to make a discount code or something I can post
if he seem like a good seller
for me he gave 10-20% under aliexpress price on the sonoff sensors so it could help others if he is willing to give same discounts
custom button card is a lot of fun to use
the light color variables (combined with greyscale for state: off) make for super-intuitive buttons
But that z-index ๐คข
rofl
The highlight is neat. I mostly like what you've done there... it's just odd that you expect cards to share a z-index and the highlight is behind one but in front of another.
Has the effect of pulling the 'lit' button forward, which doesn't feel right with the clean, flat theme.
I will defer to the CSS pros on this one; I am a "follow the tutorial and hope for the best" type of user

mono usually knows all the best ways
Oh, I'm not going to suggest how to make it better. I'm just grumpy and critical ๐
Haha, I know very little in the way of good design. I used to manage some websites but I was always more comfortable with the logic than the visuals.

I usually can identify a problem, but have no clue how to fix it

@tidal bronze what kind? passive radiators?
2 per seat. Little too much. But the best thing I did for bass.
it looks just like a passive radiator
@tidal bronze partsexpress?
Yep.
nice, I looked into those for my "dream" setup

It's worth every penny but definitely need a dsp for curves.
I managed to snag an entire setup for dirt cheap
electric projector screen, 3D projector, the receiver, the speakers, a couple media players, a DVD player and about 130 HDMI cables

$1500
wow

ridiculous voodoo nonsense

Can't remember who I was talking to about a solar climate control app written in AppDaemon, but this change will make that 100% necessary.
Yeah, I've finished my app for it now, thankfully after finding all this shite out about new tariffs.
I'm sure the Norwegians will have no problem bragging about their public hydro systems at 0.02c/kwh
The way I did the app is I gave every entity I wanted to control a turn_on_action and a turn_off_action,
As well as an estimated load and a priority 0-100
Haha, man that's so weird. We've very much made almost exactly the same app.
turn_off_action: >-
[{
"service": "climate/set_temperature",
"temperature": 20,
"entity_id": "climate.living_room"
}]
power: 500
priority: 30
I supply a list of climate entities, and minimum excess generation for them to work.
The priority system is a good idea, but I only really have 3 splits, and only really one where this will be needed.
Are you setting them to turn on/off or just setting the thermostat higher/lower
Just a self.turn_off(entity).
I'd think about using higher/lower thermostats,
So you still have a minimum comfort level, but can crank it up when there's solar
Which will take/add some energy to your thermal mass in your home
Depends on the construction of your home though
My house is pretty leaky but it's all double brick and concrete bottom and top floor so there's considerable mass
Yeah, I've lived for decades without air con, so I'm not likely gonna leave it on when it's not required ๐
It really does lag the hot/cold by 2/3 days without climate
But I'd get it to run when you're not home if there's surplus energy
The more desirable state of energy you put your thermal mass into when the energy is free, the less energy you need to use when you get home and you need it
Only until it reaches the target temp. At that point I'll shut it off (checking every 20 minutes to ensure it's still within 3 degrees of the target).
There's more value in selling more to the grid than maintaining a perfect temperature for me.
Your split should take care of all that itself,
It's not about maintaining the temp, it's about using your thermal mass as an energy battery
overcharging it when it's free to reclaim it when the energy costs you
True. I'll see how the efficiency goes when it rolls into Spring a bit more and evaluate then. With the new changes however, I'll likely have to turn the AC off altogether from 4pm - 8pm ๐ฆ
Yeah that's where the value comes in at cranking it hard in the 9am-4pm period
What's your FIT
11.5c/kWh currently. If this other energy provider fixes their shit, will go up to 18c/kWh though.
That's great,
Ours is like 6.7 cents or something crap
and 28-29c on import on flat rate tariff
about 50c on peak import
Holy shit. What state are you in? That's bananas! Thought mine was bad!
WA
Fuck me. That's nuts.
Yeah hence the whole idea of the solar diverter for my mum
No way you're getting credits on your bills with rates like that. Can definitely see why you'd want significantly more self consumption.
You have to export 4 x to get the value of 1 x import
Well I'm selling about 17kWh a day currently and consuming 10.
Item Price inc. GST
Supply charge 103.3263 cents per day
Electricity charge 28.8229 cents per unit
Or you can do this
Supply charge 103.3263 cents per day
Everyday Off-peak electricity charge 15.1002 cents per unit
Weekend shoulder electricity charge 28.7076 cents per unit
Weekday shoulder electricity charge 28.7076 cents per unit
Peak electricity charge 54.8142 cents per unit
:/
So fucked. Wonder why it's so much more expensive in WA than everywhere else. I guess sparseness - but still.
Everyday Off-peak (9pm to 7am)
Peak - weekdays only (3pm to 9pm)
Weekday shoulder (7am to 3pm)
Weekend shoulder (7am to 9pm)
My supply is 98c/day, with 25c/kWh single use rate.
Overbuilt distribution network, plus single retailer, and a myriad of invested interests
Plus 5kw export limit
including 3 phase
So they can take your kwh for 7 cents, and potentially sell it to your neighbour next door for 54 cents
Yeah, that's totally fucked. Feel sorry for you guys.
Battery storage ROI is probably stupidly efficient over there because of your terrible provider.
Please read the channel topic @ocean cipher ๐
You wanted #integrations-archived
Ops! Wrong channel? Sorry
I'm not too sure on the battery ROI
I feel like you could spend that money on making your home more efficient and passive and end up needing very little gas or electrical cooling/heating overall
@rare condor what do you use for backup management on your proxmox/zfs
@hushed basalt sorry I didn't reply, lol @ your 5g friends.
@hushed basalt
SO each VM is stopped which means its shutdown, if uptime is essential you need to consider HA
you can do snapshots but I prefer a perfect backup as 2 mins downtime does not bother me
(i.e. my nvme storage is local and fast enough for this process)
What about snapshotting your datasets and backing them up externally
The way I provision my vms and use nfs mounts I don't actually care about the vms at all,
The zfs datasets are the only thing I want to protect, plus managing their snapshots
@hushed basalt Are you running zfs as root or have pve-data as zfs
As in my boot drive?
yeah
Ok I see. I care deeply about the VMs as well as my zfs dataset. I backup my ZFS using rsync and dumb copy via cronjob
I could use zfs-send and have something nicer in place
and snapshotting but I rarely make snapshots
What are you backing up to, do you have multiple servers>
I'll be backing up to an attached 3TB XFS drive,
As well as backblaze,
I'll use rclone for backblaze,
But I might bite the bullet and get a paid gsuite account
rclone and backblaze works really well together
Yeah It's what I used on my synology,
Until that burst into virtual flames
The desktop client for the backup explorer for synology is awful,
You can only copy one folder/file at a time, so if you have a subvolume with 20-50 folders in it, good luck.
I'll probably have to rebuild the synology and mount it back on there and share it on samba or usb copy
Oh and you can't use standard ports on a synology
as in the nginx for their web gui captures 80/443 and you can't move them
Never again...
@hushed basalt I have been using a gsuite account with rclone
I haven't paid and it keeps saying it will close my account but hasn't.
I couldn't justify the cost in the end as I have friends server he is building and we are going to zfs send to each other for backups in future
@hushed basalt My NBN HFC Termination box fell off the wall today, wood screw straight into the mortar ๐คฆโโ๏ธ
Nothing surprises me anymore
So they can take your kwh for 7 cents, and potentially sell it to your neighbour next door for 54 cents
here they pay 12c but charge something like 75c
The highest energy price is around 60c usd globally, I guess Bahamas not included in that stat
well that maybe the raw price per kwh
but we are also hit with fuel surcharges bro
which are often more than USAGE
ah
I see
So Retail price much more $$
Do people use solar?
Would make a lot of sense but energy storage as always still not cheap
for example I'm only charged ~$110 for my usage but my fuel surcharge would be like $150 depending on price of gas
Do people use solar?
only just. Was illegal to use solar until maybe 2 years ago.
curruption?
and now you can sell power back to the provider but only up to 5kw for res
the power company is owned by the government
so you tell me
similar to aus lots of providers have 5kw limit per phase
๐
similar to aus lots of providers have 5kw limit per phase
@rare condor funny you say that because on our other islands you can sell up to 30kw
just not on the main island
which is sickening because their power is at a cheaper rate
What's the rationale
we basically pay for the other islands power
they are subsidized because the populations are so low most of them
for example my mothers house is bigger than the one I have here, she runs A/C 24/7... has a bigger water heater than I do, runs more pumps etc than I do and her power bill is usually around $80 total
while I pay around $260
for less usage

minimum wage is $5.63/hr
Number 8 here ๐
im sorry minimum wage is $5.25/hr here my mistake
i think min.wage here is 30k/year or so
it's $10,920/year here
$210/week
which is funny because my son's tuition fees are $4,750 without books or uniform included
or lunch
But what is the average pay?
the median is 48,600
but the range is 10,920 to 209,000 average
but over 25% of people make less than 27K
fml, i moved over to proxmox setup for more stability and better hardware.. worked perfectly for a while but now for some reason my proxmox crashes right after startup instead
actually, seems only the webgui fails
I am remodeling/adding on to our house and so I have an opportunity to do some "smart" wiring. Does anyone have a list of "if I could have wired this when it was just studs" items? Say, for strip LED lights....should I run some 3 wire cable from my crawlspace (where I'll have loads of access to power and such) to locations where I think I'll want strip lights? Should I install a single gang box with power in the kitchen for no other reason than something like the HA Switch Plate? etc
That's a rabbit hole
Definitely earth neutral active cable where you can
Cat6 anywhere you could possibly see a networked device going
Conduit and pull string(s) IMO for all those maybe locations
I'd run cat6 to a gang box anywhere you might want to put a wall tablet
Then you can run whatever you need when you get to it, since you may need mains voltage, or low voltage, or something else in 5 years time
And multiple outlets in each room
Nothing worse than your power or data outlet being on the other side of the room
I'd drop at least a pair of network cables to any power point if you can - 4 ideally to account for cable failures
Well, I'd say you plan to use two, but you want at least one spare
Cables fail during install all the time, so at least one spare is smart
Also means if you really want four somewhere you might be lucky enough to have them ๐
I'd be looking at the installing technique
Cables can come supplied pre-broken
And if you're not testing them correctly you'll not notice - or if you get unlucky and the break isn't apparent until the cable is moved
Ideally you've got it installed by competent professionals, but ... ๐คท
I've always used name brand cable
And I've only ever seen mid span faults when they've installed in incorrectly
Personally I'd just run 2 to each point and pull through a new cable with the old one if it happened to die
Managing 4 cat6 cables is quite a lot to fit down a conduit
Plus wrangling and terminating them on the other end
And I've only ever seen mid span faults when they've installed in incorrectly
@hushed basalt something as simple as tie strapping the cables too tight alters the cable characteristics tho
and I've seen cables test out good, and then people go back and manage them and then they fail
LOL
As @clever mortar mentioned flex conduit with pull strings would be the best. If no conduit I would run 16/2 or 18/2 for led locations as well.
Who knows what advances in lighting or automation tech the next couple of years will bring ๐คท
I wish I had more low voltage drops for led s but for now it's all good.
I have a minimum of 2 drops of Cat5e in each room and 2 drops of RG6 in each room, coax to all my cameras as well as one ethernet cable in each corner of the house just in case
As @clever mortar mentioned flex conduit with pull strings would be the best. If no conduit I would run 16/2 or 18/2 for led locations as well.
flex conduit never really an option here, concrete walls on the interior
coax to cameras, eh?
coax to cameras, eh?
@last dirge yes Siamese RG6
ORLY
my camera system predates IP being affordable
Aim for 30 cat6 cables per powerpoint
AIM you say?
In fact why bother with walls
you could make one of those hippie bead curtains but with CAT7 instead
Just build your house out of patch cables
no walls and free space optics FTW eh @rare condor ?
all you need is a tent and a rack mount server and your basic human needs are met
all you need is a tent and a rack mount server and your basic human needs are met
why not just live in the rack? Free heating.
Sorry for the dumb question....but why so much emphasis on cat6 cable when most devices are wireless?
Wired > Wireles
Wireless is for convenience not reliability or speed
I can run 10 GB (and more) over cables
As @clever mortar mentioned flex conduit with pull strings would be the best. If no conduit I would run 16/2 or 18/2 for led locations as well.
@tidal bronze by this you are implying that my power supply would be in the crawlspace hooked to mains power, then the 16/2 or 18/2 run to my led strip lights and my controller sits at the front of my led strip. That is, I do not put my controller for the strips in the crawlspace by the power supply but instead keep it by the lights? (for data signal integrity I am guessing?)
I can run 10 GB (and more) over cables
@clever mortar so this would be for the gaming consoles, TVs, computers etc....not for my smart lights/switches which are all wireless and don't need lightning speed?
correct
Crawlspace or attic. Controller, in my case esp device is next to the start of the strip.
Anything permanently installed IMO
Look at KNX - it's designed to be wired, not wireless
I have my TVs and receiver hardwired, and my son's PS4
just about everything else is wireless
ok....and to clarify on the strip lighting....the low voltage wire runs can be relatively long but I want to keep my data line run short right? And I should be able to power the controller (nodemcu, d1 mini, etc) can be powered off the same low voltage line powering the lights (with appropriate voltage regulators)? This keeps the led strip instal location as clean and tidy as possible (no power bricks, outlets, etc)
Yes.
yup
sweet!
If you really want to make sure you have enough driving current run 14/2 which I did so no worries later on.
ok...I have plenty of 14/2 I'm running for everything else so maybe I'll just use that.
thanks for the tips everyone!
oh and leave a huge conduit behind TV locations for HDMI
unless you wanna do HDMI over Cat5
LOL
ok

the people that built this house have a run of that that goes up to the attic all the way from the basement
I did that in my last house that had a basement.
protip, if you tie a bit of cloth at the end of a string and put a shop vac at the end of that conduit, it's pretty damn easy to get the string fished through rapidly
That's the best conduit to cut across.
@limber pine if you are planning to run audio, drop speaker wire and at least 2 x RG6 coax for subs ๐
@last dirge yep shop vac method is a life saver
@tidal bronze roger that. @last dirge very clever!

Nopes.
Less surface to touch
Can anyone reccomend a good plan to install a 20M Led strips, its for a living room all in a boxing, we currently have some cheap ยฃ20 ones but only really good for blue red green, so wanting to upgrade to cct, is 20m cct doable in one powersupply, having problem finding options, don't need and smart functions, remote control is fine
I'm finding this... anything similar on ali? - https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/5M-20M-IP65-Waterproof-5050-RGBW-RGBWW-LED-Strip-40Key-Remote-Touch-Remote/172816839318?hash=item283cafb296:g:OGUAAOSwEY9ZjgOT
room is square so can do 10m either direction
@limpid wind aliexpress isn't much cheaper, if at all, for LED stuff
They can be for cheaper stuff but yeah I can sorta see that on the higher end stuff
From my brief research I will need to get a transformer to power 2 10 meter runs ?
does anyone else just like ... hate yaml
I can't say with confidence that JSON would be better but damn does it feel like it would
nothing more annoying then trying to make something a child of another and trying to make sure the indentations are right
I suppose different files gets around this a bit
you'll get used to it if you stick with it
using competent editors like VSCode helps
yeah I think that would help
and I do use it when I start to struggle with it
but like auto formatting in VSCode just like doesn't work (unless I'm doing something wrong), since it can't really infer what spaces each line should have
I particularly like the rainbow indentation levels that make it easier to ensure that things line up in long sequences
oh that's a good point i think that would help
I just like how JSON can be like minified, then you can pop it into VSCode and auto-format and it's back to normal
in my opinion, all of the extra quotes, curly braces, comma restrictions, etc. of JSON are a bigger pain in the neck
- YAML supports comments and JSON doesn't
hmm I suppose I could see that
yeah that's definitely a big plus
although there is JSON with comments, I'm not really sure how it works (VSCode's JSON settings files allow comments iirc)
I think including files in YAML is probably nicer than it would be with JSON
the people that built this house have a run of that that goes up to the attic all the way from the basement
riser cable, yaaaay
protip, if you tie a bit of cloth at the end of a string and put a shop vac at the end of that conduit, it's pretty damn easy to get the string fished through rapidly
@last dirge I've pulled MILES of cable this way
it's pretty crazy
the guys running fiber in my neighborhood used the same trick but with those giant tow-behind air compressors
you could hear the cloth smash into the little access boxes when it came blasting through the conduit
I literally ran every single cable in the new airport like that
and still took me almost a year
LOL
3 different phases tho
2 or 4 spaces for indents ๐ค
2, always 2
ok thank the lord
it feels like the in-lovelace editor autocorrects some of the files to 4 and it feels weird
even VSCode is a little schizophrenic about it. I need to find the settings that are wrong
yeah VSCode defaults to 4 spaces for me

The Padawan role (purple) is given to our community members who have shown that they are willing to learn, have shown progress toward becoming a bigger part of our community (a.k.a. a Jedi), and try to lend a helping hand to others when they can. Please do not request to be assigned this role. It must be earned.
thank you
Thingiverse is on the shits again
yes, its been down since yesterday. You can still download STLs if you know the thingiverse id... for ex: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4059742 to download, add /zip at the end. like this.... https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4059742/zip
Anyone here with some understanding of (asus) network stuff? Having a very strange issue of not being able to connect new esp boards. Both tasmota & wled won't connect to my network. Tried on 2 different boards. They both seem to think they are connected but they don't show in connected devices on the router settings or in one of those network ip scanners.
tried a reboot of both my Router, AP combination + a seperate AP connected to that router
@tacit tapir I had issues w/ some tasmota stuff connectiong to my wireless (not asus) with wpa2. it would connect to a wide open ssid just fine
I just kept trying things such as specifying the open one as standby and eventually got it to work like i wanted.
Hmm, thx for the suggestion! I'll try an open network to see if that works. Meanwhile any other tips are welcome

the Sith on the other hand.... use apprentice or acolyte for the learners ๐
I vote to make the default role 'Nerf Herder'
I vote to make it sith lord as jedi sucks :p
But no-one starts out as a Sith lord.
All the best ones started out as nerd herders, right?
(spoiler alert)
Nerf herders too as per above
pretty sure the jedi role should be renamed to "stubborn"
lol
Whats the terminology for the highest level of integrations like "notify" and "light"?
They're not specific integrations, they're more like categories
I'm trying to start learning from the basics, but im having a hard time learning the configuration syntax (how you find lists of available types of integrations, sensor names etc)
And at that, finding the documentation that talks specifically about it
Domain
@hushed basalt this is exactly what I was looking for. Thank you.
๐๐๐ฆ
Agh, is Entity a special domain in that its an abstract object all other domains implement?
There doesn't appear to be a list of all of the available domains in a API like documentation style
Domains can be arbitrary registered I believe
Have you read the architecture docs
An entity is an individual .. entity. An instance of a device/sensor etc
@onyx mesa https://www.home-assistant.io/docs/glossary/
I've read the glossary! The issue is that I see domains like "light" or "switch" and i want to see a comprehensive list of the default ones, or a more general examples of the syntax rules on how theyre used in the configuration.yaml
I have not read the architecture docs though, is that the one that notes it is for advance users? I may have skipped it thinking i needed to read others first
Architecture is more for devs
The source is probably slightly better for working out the list of domains, though the integrations docs also tell you them
I'll take a look! At some point it may just be better to go ahead and start messing around in it. All my devices are in storage but HA should be able to do something teachable without them
I'm not sure how I haven't heard of home assistant until just recently but I'm absolutely loving it and can't wait to get into programming scripts for it
Not sure where to ask this. On the Community site I was just in the process of setting up 2FA using a security key and something went wrong. I am now locked out of my account. Who would be the person I need to reach out to to try and get this resolved?
i am having way too much fun with this
Off topic. Has anyone ever used typeform, for businesses
anyone know how to decode hex? i think it might contain chineese characters and i'd need to translate it aswell then :/ 0x020106030295FE0F1695FE3102980003CD49638D7CC40D0C09466C6F7765722063617265
Decode to what? Binary? ASCII? Base 10?
something i can read ๐
It's all just representations of the same thing.
