I just realized that you can port Chrome extensions to Firefox with barely any modifications.
@tidal bronze yea I listened to several models and found they where best bang for buck of course rf7iii beats it but 1700 a piece
whats your guess is the diffrence between k/s & kb/s
|| shit.. || that was ma managment network and apperantly there is missing a 0
@midnight adder a bit
@hushed basalt decent company for lens filters?
looking for some ND straight and gradient, CPL
We always used tiffen and schneider
but they're pricey
NiSi is probably best filters at best price
holy sheet
hehe
@hushed basalt Did you watch that new ABC doco by Chaser guy on climate change and energy efficiency?
You'd need a filter holder to do gradients though
Nah I never watch ABC
I'm dirty on ABC
all of the gradients I've seen are static, not adjustable
They're made to be put in a holder and moved up and down
you can just rotate them
really, did the abc touch you wrong?
but I'm looking at cheap scre-on stuff
A circular gradient is pretty useless
๐
ABC is stacked hard with LNP stooges, but that's /pol
Good filters are expensive
Crap filters will turn your expensive lens into crappy kit lenses
NiSi is the cheap brand ๐
"cheap"
Fight For Planet A: Our Climate Challenge is the doc, it goes after Chevron and gas/coal. Its worth a watch
I should watch it
But I know it'll just make me more frustrated
I'm not the people they need to convince,
@last dirge I'd go with fixed ND's if you want good but cheap
It is frustrating, although family was using 100kwh per day, pool heating and halogen lights and were just like meh.
Get one or two fixed NDs in the largest mm you need
then get step down rings
Variable NDs have a lot of compromises I'd avoid them for stills
@hushed basalt 3 static NDs cost more than that variable ND
Yeah but at least you can use a polariser with them
And you don't have two planes of glass to worry about refracting and internal reflections
And a better neutral density across the spectrum
Man its weird that editing scenes in the UI actually turns on/off devices while editing
yeah it freaked me out too at first ๐
@hushed basalt so is there any reason I shouldn't get gigantic filters and just use adapters for my other cameras?
ignoring lens hood fitment and all that
LMFAO "introducing our new lens, the Hubble."
Bruh
that moment when you realize how old the firmware is on your sonoff touches, then I realized (read: remembered) why I didn't do this PITA thing
2 down 2 to go
now if only I could figure out why one harmony hub shows up with a uniqueID and the other 2 don't that'd be great
Hey guys, I just finish my floor plan for home assistant and finally did it
I want to share my progress and your thoughts on it
Pig
lol
yellow running man = motion?
you could probably get crafty and have the doors change color based on state instead of having a secondary icon too
yeah, that's the one compromise that I see
SLOWLY
you could also have the room name change colors for motion instead of showing the running man
or do an overlay of the floor of the room and have that change when there's motion
I think back when I was using floorplan I did that
and to simplify the badges you could use avatars instead of labels
otherwise, it looks great, what did you use to draw it?
I'm a little woozy, but I shouldn't get caught.
I want to share my progress and your thoughts on it
@wide radish what did you use to make it? I want to do something similar
when I did mine I used MagicPlan, IIRC
isn't that low ABC for tequila?
Alcohol By Content
Oh
that's what, 72 proof?
sometimes call "ABV"
Silver is mild one
76
cuervo silver is 100 proof
38% is probably the low limit to sell it as tequila. Water is cheaper so the cheap stuff tends to be around that. Same goes for vodka, gin, whisky etc
@steel crag I use dwg fast view and the photo editor of my phone
@last dirge yea my brother nickname is pig
porque no cerdo?
sounds more like a fraternity house ๐
an animal house, if you will
@last dirge I only use my phone, but I have the original floor plan for my house so, I erase a lot of stuff to make it clean and add the text on my phone photo editor, evething on Android
Blutarski, zero point zero
oh I don't have a digital copy of my floor plan, and I don't think I have a hard copy anymore
look at MagicPlan
great app
Would any sir be kind enough to share his Yeelight flows? I am absolutely barbaric when it comes to anything related to art and so I can't make any good ones (
I'm either really dumb or doing something really dumb. Magic plan is making my rooms look nothing like they are LOL
did you do the setup?
@last dirge I tried to scan a room and it ended up not even being a rectangle
is it an Android phone?
oh it didn't ask me to do that, and yes Android
have Sky Map?
no
I don't know of any other apps that report the magnetometer calibration
if you download that it'll tell you if your magnetometer is out of whack and walk you through recalibrating it
were you holding the phone at the same level or moving it around?
were you holding the phone at the same level or moving it around?
@last dirge well I had to move it around as it asked to be pointed at my feet, then moved in circles, then moved up for height
oh, well I can try it again
so when you're pointing it up or down it should be like it's on a tripod and you're just tilting it
well I certainly didn't do this
when you were taking pictures, was it drawing the lines on the floor?
did it do any better after your calibration?
well I just played with making a room without the camera and it worked, I haven't recalibrated yet... got sidetracked
yo dafuq is happening between epic games and apple
a Battle Royale long in the making
There can be only one!
There can be only one!
@deft pewter here were are, born to be free, we're the princes of the universe
Everything in Australia is max 80 proof
Everything in Australia is max 80 proof
@hushed basalt that would not go down well here
100proof is commonplace and we also sell 151 and 180 proof
LOL
Oofph
180? Isn't that like 90ABV?
It's expensive to get drunk off spirits
180? Isn't that like 90ABV?
@deft pewter something like that yeah
I doubt something would stay at 90% for very long once you open the bottle
the 151 bottles here have flame arrestors on them
LOL
In fact I have a bottle in my cabinet
but I'm out of the "overproof" 180
this page is incorrect
it's still produced
That seems like a bad idea...
Far out facebook is addictive
I logged out of facebook and the amount of times I end up on the login screen without even thinking about it
Facebooks ethics aren't much different to pokies imo
facebook is nasty, you may as well support no privacy laws lol
That seems like a bad idea...
@orchid rose what does?
Bacardi 151 ......Dr Pepper shots.....๐
Bacardi 151 ......Dr Pepper shots.....๐
@green inlet we use Goldschlager for that
How the heck did you fit the shot glass in the aluminum can opening ๐
or fireball
Goldschlager......puke pixie dust
normally 151 is either used to make rum punch, or flaming shots
at least in my experience
Isnโt that the liquor with all the confetti in it
I've also used it as fuel
Isnโt that the liquor with all the confetti in it
@green inlet gold flakes yes
Dr Pepper is a flaming shot
Dr Pepper is a flaming shot
@green inlet oh I thought you just meant "tastes like"
BTW just flashed another sonoff touch to upgrade it
You havenโt lived until you have done a flaming Dr Pepper
and this one was a breeze compared to the others
You havenโt lived until you have done a flaming Dr Pepper
@green inlet you ever tried liquid heroin ?
Goldschlager and Jagermeister
Jagermeister is my favorite shot.
it's not my favorite but it's in my top 10
Seems dirty to put goldschlager in it
it's really smooth and really fvcks you up
when I was in Mexico last some really drunk dude at the resort was like "COME ON MAN, DO A SHOT"
when I was in Mexico last some really drunk dude at the resort was like "COME ON MAN, DO A SHOT"
@last dirge as drunk dude's do
and shoves a shot in front of me and says "IT'S CALLED SHITS IN THE GRASS"
this was melon over kahlua
but the bartender put a squirt of Hershey's syrup in there to add a little more visual
Irish Car bombs are another favorite
Irish Car bombs are another favorite
@green inlet irish car bombs ๐
but delicious fruity drinks with umbrellas? hell yeah
this was melon over kahlua
@last dirge can't drink Kahlua. Body rejects it.
any of you been to the DR?
Come on Cribbs.....I had you pegged for an OG
even the smell of cold coffee makes me ring up my buddy Ralph
they have a national drink, mamajuana
Come on Cribbs.....I had you pegged for an OG
@green inlet I think he's a "g"
it's RANCID
The DR is on my bucket list
they talk too fast
Prob like any other Latin country with their take on food/fruit/bread
especially for my elementary-ass spanish
But I want to go
if you think they talk fast, try Cuba
Cubans talk to fast and shorten everything into their own slang
Yo necisita dos cervazas y donde is el banos
I met a Cuban guy the other day and had to tell him off
donde esta*
los banos
o, el bano
and necesito, unless you're female ๐
but you got the main points right
they would've been like "this guy" but understood you for sure
I had to get around bogota, Mexico City, peurto rico, and Panama on my own. I did fairly well
I don't think my spanish is great but I've been told it's good by native speakers
I spent most of my time in Sweden speaking Spanish
lots of Spanish people and Portuguese working in Sweden
Mexico was also easy, as was Belize
Belize speak mostly English ๐
Does anyone here have any recommendations between two vpns (proton and nord) from personal experience. Am currently leaning towards proton.
which one advertises less on YouTube?
Proton I think
Is it just me or does nodejs stuff take ages to install
Makes my laptop fan go burrrrrrr just to make a nestjs install
I'm not impressed by *js stuffs
It's an unfortunate necessity though :(
Nodejs is huge in my market
Plus obviously react
Hey guys, where I can find help about esp rfid
Its working but the mqtt message that sends every time that I use a card is
Please DO NOT cross post. Read the channel description, post it and wait for folks to respond.
So node was freaking out because I had my repository on my windows drive
And wsl is slow af on that
And node has one quadrillion files
So running vsc in wsl mode without using windows paths and it's literally 100 times faster
It used to take me 20 seconds just to do nest --version
Hi - new here,so cut me some slack, please.
no
We'll see about slack when we find out if you read the topic ๐
I've go a problem with ZHA not properly recognising Sonoff SNZB-01 buttons. Where should I post it?
I guessed that!
If you read the topics of each channel, it's usually easy to find the right one. If in doubt, ask in #general-archived first.
Thanks.
114 degrees fahrenheit = 45.56 degrees celsius!
It's been hot all day ๐
yup
holy sh*rt
that's nuts
it's hot here right now too but damn
was 42c here earlier today
.f2c 97
97 degrees fahrenheit = 36.11 degrees celsius!
its 90 here and its only 10am lol
its 90 here and its only 10am lol
@shy comet yeah it's been above 90 here since about then too
Anyone in KS?
You spikey-headed jerk!
@shy comet time to jump in ๐
pew pew pew
Weirdly phallic
I think he means he likes it.
What am I looking at
So my PC was on with the screen turn off, i though it was in sleep mode... So I click on my mouse to put it out sleep mode and i see my light bulb turn on.... o_o... i click again and it turn off. WTF? XD
I was on home assistant with my mouse pointing on the light bulb ๐ It's stupid but i just woke up So i was like wth is going on here xD
Did I linked my mouse click to change light bulb without knowing it xD
I don't know what that is
so apparently if you're using Synology hybrid RAID and you upgrade a third disk to a larger size it doesn't just rebuild the array with the data from the drive you replaced
it then expands the array
at a whopping 24% progress since about 11PM last night
so this is going to take another 3 days
and then I still have two more drives to swap
so I'll be done in another week I guess
and it apparently takes windows chkdsk 8 hours to check a 3TB drive
@last dirge you can increase the speed.
of what?
Rebuilding
how?
can I do that if it's already doing it?
it's not really noticeably faster
md3 : active raid5 sdc6[2] sdb6[1] sdd6[0]
8788509824 blocks super 1.2 level 5, 64k chunk, algorithm 2 [3/3] [UUU]
[=====>...............] reshape = 25.7% (2264380744/8788509824) finish=4865.7min speed=22346K/sec
Raids are always slow to rebuild
It's a lot of data and calculations
Mirrors overcome a lot of these problems but then you're using 50% utilisation
And a rebuild of raid5 can cause a cascade failure in certain fun situations
I just received 2* 2tb, 1* 3tb, 1*4tb, 1x 6tb and 1 *8tb hard drives, thinking I might consider btrfs or unraid as man, thats a bad combo :/
Or sell them
But selling anything in curfew is PITA
I'd sell them
I wouldn't use btrfs in raid5/6 mode
If I need the space I've decided to not swap out my 4TBs
Until 16TB becomes viable
4 to 8tb just isn't worth the expense
I don't expect 16TB to be cost effective for a bit, also massive rebuild time?
I was thinking 4TB sas is best for price atm, but RIP my power bill.
Or 8TB shucked
I have a 2 x 2 x 4TB and 2 x 8TB in zfs striped mirror
I lose 50% instead of 25 or 33%
But it means I can expand and swap out a pair at a time
I did the math and for my usage pattern it actually worked out cheaper
So I'll get another pair of 8tb if I need it to add 8TB to the pool
And after that, spending $400-$500 to swap out a pair of 4TBs just isn't worth it. To only add 4TB to the pool
So hopefully it'll be a while before I get to that point @rare condor
I'm probably going to stop downloading 4k stuff too. The AI upscaling on my tv is very very good I don't actually notice the difference from 4K or clean HD source content
fair. seems well though out
I'm looking forward to trialling (beta) a hardware integration between the Honeywell Dimension / Flex Alarm panels and MQTT. It's also two way. I can then make use of the door sensors and pirs for HA as well as tasking HA to communicate with the panel.
I blame services like Netflix dumping entire seasons at once for binging.
I actually prefer getting an episode per week.
I like both
My wife and I enjoyed watching all of the Witcher over a couple of nights. But that's nothing we couldn't have done if we'd just saved up the episodes.
Don't get me wrong, I usually pace myself. It's just season releases are the reason there's often months-long voids in Sonarr.
I'd like the idea of a middle ground
Abolishment of the season model
And just clusters of episodes released at once
Kind of like BBC miniseries but not years apart
Then you have your continuation of a series arch without annoying 1-2 week waits between 40 minute episodes
You mean you don't want multiple years between seasons of Sherlock or Doctor Who? ๐คฃ
But you have gaps to let audiences do their whole podcast/facebook/water cooler discussions
More like shows like Luther etc
Where they have 4 or 2 episode seasons
And 2-3 years between.
Imagine for example if game of thrones didn't have "seasons" per say
But you had clusters of 3/4 episodes released every 3 months
Hmm. I could go for that but I imagine it'd make production tricky.
They could still produce the shows in 6 or 12 episodes at a time
They'd either always be producing content (like soaps) or they'd have to commit to a huge amount of content up-front, which is risky.
It's like lean small batch sizes but for tv production
Produce a couple of batches
Get real feedback of what works
And tweak the next production
Much smaller feedback loop
Sounds good in principle. Not sure how it'd work in practise.
It works better for tv crew as well
Basically in tv/film production if you're a freelancer for day jobs you take a risk doing long tv shows
Because if you go away for 6-10 weeks other people move in on your regular gigs
And you might not get them back
But if you're only away for 3 weeks 4 times a year you can still keep your regular intact
That makes sense. But I imagine it's cheaper to product more episodes at once. No need to build sets multiple times, get one crew in for post-production to get it all done, etc.
Yeah There definitely those factors
But for post production it's part of the same problem
They can end up being consumed by one production
So one client becomes basically their entire revenue source for a good chunk of the year
Which isn't ideal
Or they have to upscale to do smaller jobs and a big production at the same time
Which is another form of risk
Yeah, there are definitely challenges. I don't know enough about how it all works but it seems things are changing already - we're already seeing way more short runs. I miss the days of 20/22 episode seasons.
We're lucky to get 10 now.
I always found shows with 20+ episodes to be very procedural
Especially cop/detective shows
I think SG1 handled it reasonably well though
Yeah, anything with a decent overarching plot can work well.
Plus 26 episode run shows were absolutely brutal on actors etc
Listen to Hugh Laurie talk about House
It's not even a think you can throw more money at too
They're just working way too much
And you can't rotate out actors like you can with crew
what would you consider the best way to add functionality to about 50 different buttons? I feel writing automations for every different button press isn't the proper way to go about this
I feel asking in lounge isn't the proper way to go about this ๐
Start in #general-archived if you're not sure, you'll be directed to the right place.
yeah I just remembered this server has a lot more rooms, and lounge isn't the generic offtopic
This is the generic offtopic, but talking about automations in a smart home discord is not offtopic..
Asking how to do HA stuff in a channel that explicitly says no HA support is off-topic ๐
But let's leave it at that so we can get back to non-HA talk.
in that case, I'll tell more about my smart drink stirrer
Please do, that sounds interesting ๐
it would have a load cell to determine whether there's enough liquid to be stirred, and turn on automatically
otherwise functioning like a regular chem lab magnetic stirrer
Is this for cocktails or something?
any drink you'd want to stay mixed - for my use case, it's a sports drink mix for hydration at the desk
take my money
well you could take a cheap mixer heater and stuff an esp32 in it
Something that I could use normal cookware on
oh, that has considerably higher power requirements
Doesn't even need to be smart
Not a mixer but I think breville made an induction stove with pid
But it was a stupid amount of money
I just hate how there's no feedback loops in normal stovetop cooking
Could add a standard impeller on top for mixing
what do you cook that requires knowing the exact temperature?
might be helpful for a robot cook
are you hiding a robot maid from us?
Everything can benefit from precision cooking
That's the whole point of sous vide
But it doesn't work for things you cook in pots
Or fry
Control and automation also lead to standardization and repeatability
Which means you can experiment with one variable at a time
So i now have a fritzbox, im currently using it to listen to the podcast through the tv
@tidal bronze
messing around with the new camera
I got a Looftlighter for my birthday, it's pretty awesome
First time I've heard of those. They sound great. Is it basically a hot air gun designed to light coals?
I use starter cubes. In a hurry DeWalt leaf blower ๐คฃ
That's a great price.
one of the chunks that came out of the bag was a whole damn log
probably about 4" across
and about 6" long
huge stuff
Gotta switch back to lump next week
if it works it works
Damn. That's a first.
@pure vine when I hear fritzbox I think ISDN, but I might be too old
perhaps, but how old is "too old" cuz I remember ISDN just fine
when ISDN was a big upgrade from PSTN we are all old
@last dirge the painters tape on the end really makes it
the painter's tape is covering up a cardboard plug ๐
when ISDN was a big upgrade from PSTN we are all old
I remember when POTS went upgraded
to you know having callerID, 3 way calling etc
Is it falling off already ?
no, giving it another 30 minutes
Right on.
Almost ready to fall off is the right amount.
I don't have much retraction at the bones
It's going to be bbq for 2 days. Freaking hot.
I'm looking for a good online source for learning Python. I'm not able to get very far with trail / error + google. I've certainly gained some basic understanding and can make use of examples found on sites like www.w3schools.com/python but now I'd like to learn: How to program with Python. It seems like the obvious choice is to join https://realpython.com/
- Does anyone have any experience with this site ?
- Do you have another / better site to consider ?
@fluid zephyr are you new to software development in general or just python?
complete noob to real development but I can write some basic bash scripts and a little of the saem with Python
https://docs.python-guide.org/ has a good amount.
For me, I looked at source codes, and starting writing stuff
Funny you mention @light trout - cause I use your repo a a referance, lol
oh boy... probably not start there ๐คฃ
I'm looking at your latest fork, the fitnesspal - I'm gonna try gettin a devcontainer setup from that
fitnespal? ๐ค
it's gonna now, I follow you so I noticed it https://github.com/helto4real/custom_component_myfitnesspal
anyways, looked like a pretty straight foward basis to figure out the devcontains
It sure is!
I'm in probably 5-10 different repos daily, all work is beeing done in devcontainer
(other than the fitnespal change, that was github UI ๐ )
Funny, I run Linux but never got into Docker -- I'm like super noob (developer) but HA has motivated me to learn. I look back at my first post in the forums, I didn't even know what markdown was. But I learned it cause I wanted share a guide and make it look nice
awww yiss
well I was going to hang out in here but not while I'm hungry
hahaha
So looks like using a dev container with VS-Code doen't work in Linux - The container add-on rely on closed source code not available, in the Linux version, Code-OOS ๐ฆ
It's going to be bbq for 2 days. Freaking hot.
@tidal bronze hot? thought you Californians were use to the heat and this weather should feel like spring to you
I run Ubuntu @fluid zephyr works pretty well here (better than what it did when I used Windows)
๐ค That's great news! I'll give it try on my laptop then, My main rig is Arch
It look like everything istalled but then is says it can't find the command when I try to run using the commane pallet
I try laptop though, it has Ubunut base, thanks
๐ค That's great news! I'll give it try on my laptop then, My main rig is Arch
@fluid zephyr how to spot an arch user... "they tell you"
๐
๐คฃ
@forest edge you have no idea what it really means when we say sunny.
I'll admit it, Arch + KDE fanboy
ZoL or death?
ZFS on Linux ?
yeah lol
of course, lol
i've yet to use zfs as i use unraid. hoping it comes sooner rather than later
That's why I use TrueNAS for my server -- BSD based but native ZFS
but most of my array is "linux isos" and i dont have a lot to lose regarding bitrot or i/o
yeah
surprising you use truenas over freenas
I fell in love ZFS after that fact, My first attraction was just being able create a zpool with all drives and split up datasets. But i liked that cause I could create without predefined sized
"linux isos"
I was on FreeNAS 11.3 but now it's TrueNAS Core
ah
they merged
TIL
yeah i just dont have the disks to put in a second server and play w/ zfs
i have a bunch of 8year power on hour wd greens that i dont trust as far as i can throw them... others go in unraid
at some point i want to try proxmox+ceph+rook
of those, I only know about proxmox
That's cool. I have an idea of the concepts they mention but that's all really over my head
same, that's why i want to play with them
@hollow glacier is that plex you have your movies in
this is my old beast
info card? that was a snip from a discord bot i run in a docker container called "mellow"
from what i've seen, emby is better for live tv and iptv
otherwise it's basically the same as plex
jellyfin is cool for foss
i have that setup as a backup
That UI looks sweet, and I'm really jealous of Docker
yeah
no "traditional raid" is what turns away most people from unraid
but you can nest unraid in esxi or use hardware raid shudders and pass that through
the way they handle VMs and docker containers is great though
ezpz to passthrough any device
That's another thing I like about ZFS, how it's basically the same as raid, but built into the filesystem + the snapshots. It took me a while using ZFS before I actaully realized what they were, lol
It's great to have so many options
that's what a typical docker container install looks like on unraid
preconfigured templates that are easy as hell to edit or create your own
VMs are just as easy, yet you can edit the xml and use anything you find on r/vfio as a guide
Thats nice, The plugin on NAS are basically bash scripts
i've heard freenas isnt great for docker and vms as far as setup goes
You have to use a VM running Linux for docker - The plugins / jails on FreeNAS are the BSD version of containers so super light wieght and fast
ah
but also BSD based
a lot of containers for unraid use alpine + whatever
yea alpine seems the way to go for a container base
although a lot are arch too
my plex container https://hub.docker.com/r/linuxserver/plex/
I'm scare if I get into docker much more I'll want to switch my server to something that can run it native. I don't have the overhead for a VM
Plus byhve doesn't have usb pass through to VM
imo for home use a whitebox ryzen build is the way to go
usb passthrough is dead simple w/ unraid :x
i built two whitebox servers with used server gear
but to do it again i'd definitely do a ryzen build.. i upgraded to a 3700x / x570 mobo with a 2060s last year and i freaking love it
US does work in jails, I think the byhve hypervisor is not very good - I would want a Linux base for anything like that
i thought about virtualizing my gaming pc in a win10 vm on unraid w/ my 3700x and co
pcie passthrough?
You can do it on NAS also but it's a decent guide to follow
you can easily edit the VM xml and #1 block unraid from using those cores for itself AND dedicate specific cores and ram to the VM.
assuming your pcie lanes are plenty and tweak it a bit.. you can get pretty much bare metal perf w/ pcie passthrough to a vm
it's wild
passthrough an nvme drive and bam
dude
i gamed in a win10 vm on unraid w/ a lga2011 dual xeon w/ e5-2667s and a gtx970 passed through and it.. wasnt bad
you got me thinking, that's usually never a good thing
ddr3 ecc slowed me down as well as the gpu
i had the choice of building a new gaming pc or a second server.. i went with the server
thinking good tho
maybe not for the wallet
If I made I swtch, this is what I have for a server + I have a GTX 970 I could add for GPU
I can't afford a second server, I'd have to commit, lol
Eh thereโs a serious i/o penalty with the array. Plus youโd lose zfs and striped parity
But if itโs for a home server to run hass, plex, etc and VMs itโs perfect
Loosing ZFS would be a tough, and I made the HA plugin for NAS so I am kinda commited to that - takes breath and steps back from the edge
Lol
Btw if you type your /takes sentence in ** it will emphasize it like this takes breath
The devcontains work! Had to install the microsoft branded version of VS Code, It's only the open source version that doesn't support containers. AUR to the rescue , lol
I recommend not using volume mounts if you're on windows
Git clone inside the linux container. Way better performance
I've been learning typescript for the first time this weekend
And I'm actually really liking it
I want to convince the teams I work with to change to TS. I think there's going to be much resistance.
For now, I'm going to look at getting them to add declaration files so the IDE at least does more TS-aware stuff.
I don't understand the resistance to TS
No one likes their cheese moved
Static typing. Real interfaces. ๐
I think it's just the learning curve. I'd like to use it but I'm one of the newer members on a product. Most of them are seasoned vets, so don't like having things change.
:'(
Do they hate docker
Hello everybody! New user here. Adopted Home Assistant when Wink decided to not be free any longer. Plus I like tinkering and I fancy myself a novice coder (I want to say "programmer" but I think "coder" is the new, hip title). However, I don't even really know how to use github yet. Home Assistant has been DIY enough to satisfy my tinkering needs but simple enough to actually make someone like me have a successful HA build. HassOS, of course (easy). I use HA to basically do some automation stuff with my lights and to turn my pool pump on and off each day with a GE/Jasco Z-Wave switch. Looking to do more automation stuff as I add more smart devices to my home. I'll be looking to this forum for automation ideas as I often don't realize the value of automating some things with the smart devices I already have.
@solid thunder welcome to the rabbit hole
I too am new here, just started the smart home adventure yesterday. Installed 8 GE/Jasco zwave switches and got them all working. I really appreciate the people here's responsiveness and patience to the complete noobs. I was frankly nervous to ask for help. I can't wait to learn more, and get this system completely off the ground. Look forward to learning and hopefully some day contributing back.
@winged thicket welcome .... @clever mortar is your guy ๐คฃ
Don't worry, I'm making sure the lions are feeling peckish
i up your lion with one thorn to the paw
Fine, I'll go settle for some locusts... BRB
I love the sound of jackhammers in the morning
Outside or the floor above?
25ft outside my window
if it was in the floor above I'd set fire to the building because my home is single level LOL
me and the squirrels have an agreement
a truce if you will
they stay quiet, they dont get kicked out
I'd love squirrels
I have chickens that I do not have a cease fire agreement with
they are shot at on sight
LOL paintballs and a slingshot only embarrass them tho
gotta get those rose colored glasses for them
for the what?
lmao
you know, I grew up on a chicken farm and I've NEVER seen those
LMFAO
and we used to have 750,000 chickens....
Clearly eyeless
that looks alittle like linus from tech tips lol
Haha, good spot
who should i convince that home assistant should include the package expect
it is great to have if you are making script that for example SSH to a router or a switch to enable or disable a policy or port ๐
Well, that'd be an architecture point, or maybe a feature request
i use it to enable or disable my childs internet access. i manually add expect by running apk update and apk add expect. should be a easy thing to include by default
Of course, if you ran #551864459891703809 you'd be able to do that ๐
Conversely, if you're on #330990055533576204, it's not full Linux and you can't install packages.
So... probably not an easy thing to include by default.
Well, it'd be in the container
i run my containers on a ubuntu installation
Yeah, but expect runs in the container
Doesn't matter what your OS is ๐
expect is awesome though ๐
Accept is the worst name ever when googling ๐
I will switch to the nuc image if it works on my small supermicro servers and the need to do stuff like this. The hardware is 100% "normal" intel stuff so i guess hardware support shouldn't be a issue ๐
Hello! Could you add the package expect to hass.io? It is great for making script that connect to network equipment to enable and disable stuff like firewall policys or switchports. If you do that i donโt have any more reasons to run the not really supported installation on d...
Create an add-on for it
right now i use command line switch to run to shell scripts in the /config-folder
switch:
- platform: command_line
switches:
child_internet_status:
command_on: bash -x /config/child-internet-unblock.sh
command_off: bash -x /config/child-internet-block.sh
friendly_name: child Internet Status
that script is using expect to ssh to my router, run some commands to enable or disable the firewall policy that enables or disables my sons internet access
@wispy fable posted a code wall, it is moved here --> https://paste.ubuntu.com/p/hQcxBBZ7cy/
@wispy fable Rule #6: Please do not post codewalls (longer than 15 lines) - use sites such as https://hasteb.in/, https://paste.ubuntu.com/, or others.
Please take the time now to review all of the rules and references in #rules.
@light trout Do you think i can run the shell script in another container?
Everything is doable but the path of least resistance is by adding expect to the homeassistant container used by hass.io
Will not help, and adding additional stuff in there for 1 user... Probably will not happen.
Create an add-on, and do whatever inside that
ok. so when i switch to a regular hass.io image on my server somebody can add it to the community add-ons?
Well, that's more an #add-ons-archived discussion I'd suggest
No one will do that for you, you need to make it
yes but if i make my own container somebody can add it to the list of add-ons
lot's of work for only one command ๐
or maybe i can put the expect binary in the config folder. that would solve it ๐
i realized that pexpect is available and incluted in the image ๐
Please don't crosspost, especially into a channel that says "no support"
this is a #frontend-archived question, and there are several hits on the forum (like this one: https://community.home-assistant.io/t/media-player-volume-slider-and-source-select/131439)
@static schooner sorry! Will delete it right away and check frontend. Thanks
thanks, or just visit the link I posted ๐
Anyone know of a good place to unload older zwave switches? As part of my recent migration to HA I replaced ~12 non-zwave plus GE switches for plus models. Anywhere better than eBay?
tear some apart and make zwave reed switches out of them
Do people do that with these switches in particular? Wouldnโt that be easier with a device thatโs already battery powered versus figuring out a power supply some a circuit built for mains power?
no idea what people do with them in general but the power is being stepped down, to power the actual zwave controller
Thatโs an idea. I also have two Aeon microdimmers that I may figure out something for
you would have to take one apart to see how difficult it would be but it's like most other stuff. a little creativity and you can turn it into something else that's useful for you
Thinking about wiring one of those into my hardwired smoke alarms, on the traveler
Mains powered device to read a push button...
Time is valuable
@hushed basalt as opposed to spending weeks messing with a backup using raids? lol jk
Yeah that even proves my point more :D
I should of just spent more money on better backups rather than relying too much on synology
lol
Now I spent the money on a real server and more hard drives and use zfs and mirrors and it's super simple and easy
The plastic still being on those gives me anxiety. PEEL THAT SHIT OFF!
Random question: What's a decent IDE for MySQL? Use SSMS daily, so something similar would be good. Need to do some relatively complex analysis on the HA data.
it does save on the scratches tho
Unless the data is stored on the outside, peel it off ๐
Storing data in the plastic protection... write that down, write that down!
Ever growing plastic waste, ever growing data needs. Two problems solved in one.
Like the original wax cylinders to record audio
is there any more modern aproach for an alarm built into HA than bwalarm
I'd ask in #integrations-archived ๐
Random question: What's a decent IDE for MySQL? Use SSMS daily, so something similar would be good. Need to do some relatively complex analysis on the HA data.
@thick dragon I'm by no means an expert but I always just used MySQL Workbench when I had to manage a couple of DB's in a previous job.
Tinkerer, the thing is that i dont want to integrate an exisitng alarm, but built one in HA
but will ask
If you want to make your own (as in writing the code), check the dev docs and ask in #developers. If you want to use something existing, ask in #integrations-archived
Well, that's kinda where you'd start ๐
haha
https://distrowatch.com/dwres.php?resource=popularity ๐ข Speaking about metrics Ubuntu is more popular than Debian (Excluding Forks). I sure wonder what most people installed the generic linux install on..... Guess I need to figure out secondary storage on the Nuc image and write an RFC Spec to get supervisor supporting shm size so I can run frigate..
Most people probably used Ubuntu, but that does not mean it's is/was a good idea to do so
i like arch
Not better, even more terrible
less terrible, arch comes pretty much empty
yeah, my only problem is it's going to take lots of figuring out how to get onto the stock images. I have backups and databases split across nvme / secondary ssd, and running native docker images which I could probably do with the prox addon.
why change? generic is not really unsupported afaik
I know better at this point...
it will be broken at some point and then I won't have time to fix it
Messaging has been very clear, we don't want you using this. The generic install linux scripts were broken and still are from when the generic method went away and came back.
It's not broken
https://raw.githubusercontent.com/home-assistant/supervised-installer/c674830d8ddc6af9d618755a7995af939dd73fde/installer.sh is the last commit that works for me on stock ubuntu..
maybe there's been recent updates but it wasn't working a month ago.
I'd suggest #330944238910963714 is a better place to discuss that ๐
Well... Using it on Ubuntu is not supported ๐คท
Look at the README
yeah, looks like it was broken for a few months and fixed within the past week.
yeah not supported now, but was for the longest time and even the install docs said to use it (Ubuntu) way back when.
I don't need assistance, just nicely pointing out that the direction left a sour taste in my mouth and that I no longer trust installation methods as they could just disappear. e.g., how long will Debian be supported before that is canned? Hypervisor update 3 versions ago added error logging and the like (good) latest one removed that option for me and now I got a deprecated notice. Don't think I'm going to waste the effort getting onto Debian because I don't want to waste time when that eventually is removed.
regardless if I can figure out storage across drives it will be nice to be on official images :).
Read the pinned message in #330944238910963714
Yeah, I get it it and read it when it came out :-). One of the reasons I'm going to the nuc images next. Long term it probably shouldn't exist home automation is hard enough (and one of the reasons I can see it being removed in the future).
generic always worked fine for me
, even with all volumes mounted on nfs
Messaging has been very clear, we don't want you using this. The generic install linux scripts were broken and still are from when the generic method went away and came back.
I just helped someone with 0 knowledge of linux setup generic supervised on Debian recently so I don't agree with this statement
@steel crag there was a commit 5 days ago to fix installer and then a few weeks before that, but it was broken for at least 1-2 months.
well you said still are broken tho
I assumed so, and corrected myself
Home Assistant works too damn well now. I haven't done anything to it for months now and everything just works. That makes me sad.
there's stuff i've been meaning to do but can't be arsed to do it
need to upgrade all my appdaemon stuff to the new version
WHY AREN'T YOU ON THE BLEEDING EDGE?!?!?
ive got a bunch of automations i want to write but i need to buy more hardware ๐
uhh, because there's nothing wrong with it
I even update it from time to time and it still doesn't break. This is bullshit.
eh, i upgraded pretty quickly and then everything started throwing exceptions so i pinned a version to come back to it "later". that time hasn't come yet
I haven't passed 0.112 due to a lack of time/need. I'll probably get to 0.114 before 0.115 comes out
bleeding edge you say? You are currently running version 0.115.0.dev20200815
You sir are nucking futs - or a developer. Not that I'm entirely sure those things aren't part of the same continuum...
upgraded, now on the real bleeding edge ๐
We need a release bot to ask @amber bramble why he's running an old version

I wonder why the Military doesn't want an student intern to approve changes to a major project. Must be a bug. I should have full oversight ๐ก
Ugh is anyone here right now by any chance a PC hardware specialist?
Most of these nerds ๐
@boreal pewter I'm pretty decent, depends on Server or Consumer?
PC, consumer
ask away
Have you restarted it? ๐
I don't approve of your hardware.
ops I am meant to say that afterwards.
sorry just pre-emptive
I face a cooler connector problem where I already have 4 4-pin coolers with Y-cables on 2 fan connectors on the mainboard. Now I wonder if the volt and watt are identical to the CPU cooler connectors, since they're both filled with a Dark Pro 4 too and I now have a 5th 4-pin cooler I need to connect. Else I need a longer cable to connect to last free spot on mainboard which is at the other end of it
So actually, should I longer the cable to reach the last fan spot or should I use a Y cable on the cpu cooler and use the second one for the 5th cooler
Just keep adding Y cables until everything's hooked up ๐คฃ
Ok lets start with Basics 4 Pin header means it has a PWM output meaning speed control
๐
They are all 12V connectors. Not sure how much amperage you'd get out from one but I would guess it's fine
Bonus points if you can get the Y cables to loop back around into themselves.
I hear that gives perpetual energy.
If you want individual speed control then you want to plug it into spare header
True @orchid rose my bad
I probably wouldn't mess with the cpu cooler connector and split off one motherboard one just to be safe, check voltage requirements
All the mainboard and cpu connectors are PWM, I just don't have enough slots for 7 fans ๐
And they are all PWM
And I want it to PWM
I wouldn't use CPU header
While 3 connectors are for chassis fans, 2 are for CPU cooler, are they identical?
I might be dyslexic this morning. I read PWM as Pro Modern Warfare (player).
You know you can get expansion boards than are USB header based
to control more PWM fans
They all adjust depending on different temperature sensors usually
Yeah that for sure
Since when did pc building get so complicated to get the ultimate "gamer" advantage. Been building pc's for 20 years and just started on a new build and it's like in the last 5 years everything has changed.
Gamer marketing
nothing has changed?
so many more sensors and led lights to integrate into home assistant.
But still, I have 7 fans, and 5 connectors, while 2 of them are CPU. Tell me your idea
cases sizes, motherboard options (remember when the most expensive motherboard was like 150... now they are 700+).
but otherwise its same parts and processes
You can still make an ugly black box like mine. It's just that they sell you more stuff like water cooling, rgb lighting etc
I hate RGB soooo much.
Eh. Black boxes are the best. I hate RGB.
Just use Y splitters Anon
Rainbow vomit can die
And there are some solid mobos for $/ยฃ150. Gotta be a fool to spend more than that.
lights, led options, cooling options for motherboards, gfx cards etc.. shit takes way more planning.. back in the day you had air cooling, then corsair had aio which was super nice and it just keeps getting crazier
AIO is fine. Custom loops are overkill and mostly just for show.
heaps of features and customisation, USB C PCIEgen4 etc
I'm the only person that's ever seen the inside of my tower. That's unlikely to change. I'm not trying to impress anyone.
waiting for zen 3 but going to do the x570 with the 3080. trying to find a good case, so many reviews and options these days.
but thinking about finally doing a sick led setup as I've always been plain black box.
@deft pewter Your PC is worthless unless it can start a rave in your bedroom.
I not gonna upgrade till ryzen 5000 I suppose
Also noone buys a ryzen 3000 now shortly before ryzen 4000
I love the Corsair Carbide series. Plain and simple. Tons of space for additional SSD's and decent cable routing.
@boreal pewter I did I bought Ryzen 3600 for $100 as its cheap enough to upgrade to higher end Ryzen 4000 CPU then
I built a monster pc in 2012 and continually upgraded it. I definitely need to upgrade, can't wait any longer..
@deft pewter poor airflow though
@deft pewter I have the Be Quiet Dark Base 600, also 6 Be Quiet fans, the Be Quiet dark rock pro4 cpu cooler and a Be Quiet PSU
can't really play half life: alex on this without getting sick.
Nah. AIO hooked up to the top vents. Airflow is fine.
I hate AIOs
why is that?
I hate pump noise
never really had a problem with the corsair ones
I can't hear my computer noise over my music/game noise...
Sure, I'd notice if I sat in silence... but why would I do that?
Right I not gonna take a control for additional pwm, I gonna get a longer cable then
My PC is silent, i.e. no fans and chokes replaced as well as caps with Nippon Chemicon to remove coil whine. I spent $1300 to get noise below 24db. The room I work in is silent. Extra thick insulation. I can hear the blood pumping through my ears and breathing of chest its so quiet. Still deeply unsatisfied as chair makes noise when I lean on it a bit.
@rare condor hit the gym ๐
Can someone help me figure out two things. I need to share a picture of my Logbook, and I need to know what channel I should post a question about "Sun" rising and setting literally 20+ times in a 1 second period.
I want a low power, quiet build... the 3080+ is not going to help but I'm trying to get all on solar...
@cedar herald I do every day, 100 curl ups before I start day in isolation.
Take a look at Misophonia for context
my arms hurt just reading that...
yeah no kidding. I need to get in shape, started doing the couch to 5k. I should do that first thing in the morning
Also I used to do cold/hot showers, but not anymore.
@rare condor well there is a HA solution for that.. You can have HA determine a random shower temp for you ๐ https://github.com/niemyjski/homeassistant-kohler
Do you have kohler hws?
hws?
egg shrooms with bacon and bacon dumplings ๐คค
I have the shower hardware
ah. nice
Well its 4 am so I should got to bed. Night all
RIP forgot to bring in bed sheets. Time to brave the cold ๐ถ๐
Just got my first sonos speaker (a beam soundbar) -- is there a listing of speakers that are modern vs. their deprecated one? So I can go pick up a good-enough one off ebay?
hmm, the ikea speakers play nice w/ sonos too?
any feedback on quality of the $100 ikea speakers? Seems like a good first step to get a bunch of rooms wired up quick for a reasonable amount of money
Google has lots of answers to that, but from memory the bookshelf speaker isn't quite as good as the One
of course. I figure it's equivalent to a typical smallish speaker
but not as good as dedicated bookshelf dumb speakers at the same price point
I know folks with it who're quite happy. To be honest, given the option of a pair of those, or a single One, I'd go with a pair of the Ikeas
I'll almost certainly replace the single One in my home office with a pair of the Ikea ones at some point
I think I'm gonna just try it. Use is mostly for white noise at night anyway...
To be fair, a Home Mini will do that just fine
I'm liking the sonos system though - music is a use we have - and I'd like to get whole house audio setup
Yeah, if you want actual music, there's little else that's HA compatible on the market at that price point
I've setup a few whole house Sonos jobs and man I was never so jealous
I mean they were also in USD$10,000,000 beach condos, but that part didn't make me green with envy. The electronics I spec'ed for the job did.
Does it make you more mad when they have $100k of italian marble and spend $60 on some crappy router
Marble routers are known to be unreliable
Does it make you more mad when they have $100k of italian marble and spend $60 on some crappy router
oh I put in a Unifi system there ๐ the router was not crappy
full harmony setup, sonos whole house, outdoor AP's for the pool and beach areas.... IP cameras.... in reality that place should have HA in it ๐
well those places... the customer owned 5 of them identical
each go for $10,000,000 .....
random question: why don't you see some of the better IOT projects/HA projects become start ups/businesses?

ooooooh sm_g970
nice
but question, will this pause my son's media player if I'm getting a phone call?
That depends on how you determine the active media player.
I've got it set up so it looks at speaker groups first, then chromecasts, then the rest, and takes the first that's playing. That way it should always pause the correct thing.
sounds awesome
Could someone here help me with my probably very dumb question. I'm installing room-assistant on a pi0w following https://www.room-assistant.io/guide/quickstart-pi-zero-w.html#configuring-room-assistant I've done everything correctly but when trying to execute the room-assistant command it gives a command not found error...
Itโs probably going to require some basic Linux skills
Probably yea...
Likely the room-assistant binary is not in your PATH, so you're trying to execute it without being in the directory that it lives in.
So probably missed this rather important step: cd ~/room-assistant
Finished re-designing my dashboard tonight, complete with a new music preset selector, based on something I saw on Dr. Zz's Lovelace in one of his streams.
Thanks man. Iโm pretty pleased with how it turned out.
Is that lovelace?
@rare condor I'm looking forward to when I can put my servers back in a rack in the garage
Mine lives in my Laundry Cupboard
Although as my dryer isn't vented, humidity gets crazy high
All desktop grade fans too. Still a lot of noise
Indeed servers should be away from any living space if possible
You should splash some cash for a heat pump dryer
Your dryer vents into the room?
You'll make it up on electricty savings pretty quick
Dryer vents are uncommon here
At least any house I've seen
And I've lived in 9 houses
Where is that?

I don't like using default lovelace on mobile
I try not to use lovelace at all and rely more on real buttons, sensors and automations.
But 7" tablets in each room would be great
