Wasnt sure where to ask but I have a home assistant at home and wanted to unleash my automania on my parents place. I would rather administer automation logic and account linking through my place's machine. Should I like vpn those devices through a shared subnet back to me using a machine there? Or is there a another way to use their machine to run both locations but have it benefit from person and shared account based support they'd only have at my place like dialogflows?

hushed basalt

@vital moth get the to sign up with nabu casa and you do admin remote easily

vital moth
#

Nah, my home is connected to google through keys and a domain name. But my parents… .

ashen kayak
#

so you are forwarding ports to your HA?

vital moth
#

Yes, at my place, 443 to 8123

ashen kayak
#

i don't think a VPN is your best shot, latency and reliance on VPN may give poor results. Is buying a pi for them out of the question?

vital moth
#

That IS their machine, a pi 3 w/ hassio os.

#

mine at home is a 4

ashen kayak
#

Gotcha, was a little confused. So you are looking for a master/slave config for the HA's?

vital moth
#

yes sir :D

ashen kayak

check this out

But you know, master at a domain, slave at variable ip

#

different locations, different ips

but sounds like you have the right idea for an IPSEC vpn

#

same "logical" network

#

so long as you on the same broadcast network, sounds viable

vital moth
#

Server at home strictly for their machine?

#

Or can I flip it and expose local ip addresses to my home machine?

ashen kayak
#

Network layout, are you having a pi at their house and one at yours? Connect the two via a VPN to create a similar network? If that is the case, then it will be like they are on the same network

bigger questions is can both gateways support this type of connection

Good afternoon all. I'm moving my Home Assistant installation to a new host tomorrow. I can find community forum posts about it, but no official guide. Any guidance on how to best do this?

velvet horizonBOT
#

Not sure which install you're using? If you have system_health enabled you can check Configuration -> Info, or see the following.

  • If you're using HassOS, flashed an image, or booted a VM with an image you're using #330990055533576204

  • If you installed Linux and then ran a script to install HA and have add-ons then you have #330944238910963714

  • If you're running docker commands or use a Docker manager and have no add-ons then you have #449717345808547842

  • Finally, if you use pip to install or upgrade you have #551864459891703809

Having difficulty chosing an install method? See this blog post for guidance.

limber mountain
#

About other discord servers? No, what would i search for?

clever mortar

Search here and the forum for anybody else discussing German language HA forums/Discord

#

Not that smaller is likely to help with much... this place works because there's a lot of experienced people 😉

limber mountain
#

Ok, yet I don't get an answer every time I ask here. I see many people ask here and you guys are busy, thats why I thought I'd be better off in a smaller discord server

clever mortar

Well, not getting an answer means:

  1. You're asking in the wrong channel
  2. You're not asking an actual question
  3. You're not providing any information
  4. Nobody has an answer
#

We see a lot of can anybody help "questions", which will largely go ignored

Or if you're asking about some obscure thing, maybe nobody knows

Not sure where to ask, but quick question.

I’m just now getting into home automation and have just purchased everything to setup HomeAssistant on a Pi. For things that are sold with their own hub, do I need that hub or does the Pi replace it?

For example: I’m thinking of buying some IKEA bulbs...do I need their hub? Does home assistant control their hub, or replace it? I’ve been doing a little research but it seems like most people have other hubs anyway.

If this is the wrong channel, let me know where I ought to go with this question! Thanks!

Does anyone have any recommendations on a good brand of smart wall switches that can be flashed with tasmota?

I've been using the sonoff basics for outlets, but when looking into sonoff's line of smart wall switches I'm not a fan of the touch controls or how they need a special plate over the entire box.

I'd greatly prefer a brand of smart wall switch that uses a real button and only takes up one gang so if I wanted to I could have regular switches alongside smart switches in the same box.

Any suggestions?

junior forge

It is amazing what one can do with just a couple of line of code sometimes 😄

So, I wonder...

What is that for?

night zodiac

I have 0 use for it. I just had never messed with arduino and tried to make two components do things together.

it worked a bit too easily so I guess I need to make it fancy

Hehehe thats how I started out with that as well

I went nuts on AliExpress an bought about everything ESPHome supported at the time.

night zodiac

haha

I bought a 4 channel relay that arrived today that I was going to flash and make a dumb device smart but I realized it was more AC power oriented and I didn't like the way it was powered

ducky makes a really solid plastic keyboard though

junior forge

Yeah I'm pretty happy with it to be honest.

night zodiac
#

I like it a lot

junior forge

What I personally really love about the Duck boards, it the ability to reprogram them

without any software based simulation. Just straight on the keyboard itself

#

For example, I've mapped my Capslock to escape

night zodiac
#

see, I love QMK firmware so that is really what I miss

my capslock is on function

#

I need to get my QMK firmware back, I miss it, haha

but you have to flash it like you mentioned not wanting to do

Its a keyboard 😄 remapping keys is helpful

but 🤷‍♂️ Same as I don't have LEDs and stuff

After it you can just browse to it and set it up via browser

#

Also, if you are completely new to home automation and hardware stuff

#

it might be an good idea to consider alternatives

#

e.g., Zigbee based stuff with a Zigbee stick

#

as it removes the need to flash, is all local and besides, Zigbee is versatile (e.g., hook up Hue bulbs, motion sensors, window/door sensors, there is really a freaking lot available on zigbee)

#

Z-Wave is a comparable path as an alternative to Zigbee, but generally more expensive

hushed basalt
#

Zwave is also more regional

junior forge
#

Yes that as well

hushed basalt
#

For example there's bugger all zwave in Australia

Hi fellow automators 👋 as usual its de simple things in life one needs help with 😸 is there any way to auto cycle trough tabs of a Lovelace dashboard (used to have a tab-switcher on chromium before)? together with "lovelace-swipe-navigation" this is would be the way better option than browser tabs? Am i missing the obvious? Hints much appreciated 🙇‍♂️

junior forge
#

@midnight adder I think the #frontend-archived channel might be a better place to ask that question

#

you are more likely to get an answer there

vernal rose
#

Anddd now im confused 😂

#

I thought Sonoff would be a great start

#

Cheap and cheerful to get to grips

junior forge
#

Well, @vernal rose, that is kinda good to be confused 😄

austere minnow
#

guess it depends what route you want to go

#

if you are interested in automations/frontend stuff and want devices just to work ==> Zigbee

junior forge
#

Well, a Sonoff CC USB stick for Zigbee sets you back around $4 on AliExpress. General parts/sensors for Zigbee are around $10-15.

vernal rose
#

I dont want to go stupid and make my door unlock when i get home. Just want the basics like blinds, pool filter and lamps

austere minnow
#

if you want to tinker along (like me 🙂 ) start with sonoff and other esp8266

#

hard to do custom stuff with zigbee

#

@vernal rose ==> Zigbee

#

😉

junior forge
#

Yeah I guess that is a good summary. If you look to get started easy and dip your toes, Zigbee is awesome.

#

If you want to tinker around and play with the electronics, ESP based stuff is great (like the sonoff basics).

austere minnow
#

By the way blinds: whats easier here depends on what do you have already. I got an electric system for blinds (controlled using mains) -> so ESP/Wifi devices like Shellys was an easy way

junior forge
#

And quite honestly, I think almost everybody in here runs a mix of DIY/ESP stuff (like sonoff) and Zigbee or Z-Wave.

austere minnow
#

if you do not have power next to your blinds or no blinds at all yet ==> zigbee devices are handy

hushed basalt
#

I have about half and half zigbee and tuya/esp

vernal rose
#

Anyone got a UK link for the flashing stuff i need?

junior forge
#

Right, @vernal rose Shelly is a good alternative for Sonoff as well. A little more expensive, but better quality and easier to flash, but also easier to use without flashing (as it supports MQTT protocol out of the box)

vernal rose
#

😐 I thought this would be easy to get started. I have just touched the tip of the iceberg 😂

#

I might just get the flashing kit. Start with Sonoff and hope for the best 😂

junior forge
#

LOL, don't worry just enjoy the ride

#

it will be frustrating, but highly addictive and fun in the end

austere minnow
#

my friend wanted to start with home assistant. So I bought him some xiaomi door sensors and stuff and a conbee stick. He was ready to go within 2hrs

vernal rose
#

No intention so offend Jewish people there

austere minnow

Thanks appreciated 👍

vernal rose

Got it thanks Dikt

junior forge
#

any USB FDTI adapter would do I guess @austere minnow

#

@vernal rose Be sure to check out youtube. There are many, many tutorials around on how to flash these things

vernal rose
#

On it 🙂

#

Think im going to start with the pool filter first.

#

What do you call the "plugins" for the HA? Looking to get a timer/scheduler for it

austere minnow
#

check Robs Youtube channel. He has a nice video about pools and home assistant

vernal rose
#

Got a link please?

austere minnow
vernal rose
#

Thanking you.

austere minnow
#

just for inspiration. He likes to code. You could do easier stuff with using tasmota or esphome "standard" binaries

vernal rose
#

I've seen a few of his video's

austere minnow

I thought the "$20" might catch your attention 😉

@hushed basalt If you have any drives dropout of ZFS blame it on the blue SATA -> MINI Sas cable those are so bad.

hushed basalt

Did you get them on amazon

rare condor
