I got HA installed on docker and it is up and running and it has some of my devices installed and working, but the docs say there is suppose to be a link to Hass.io on the left for more intergration but there isn't a link on mine. Any idea why? Or how to fix it?

thick dragon
#

@fleet swallow If you're running it through Docker, you don't have Supervisor, which is where the addons are. #449717345808547842 would be the channel for your installation method. If you want the addons, that would be #330990055533576204. If you're actually talking about integrations, they're in the configuration menu.

Basically I am missing Radarr, Google Maps, qBittorrent, Emby, Android TV and a few others. They never showed up or let me set them up or pick them.

On a completely different note. What ever happened with the C by GE code? It looks like someone created it but it never got integrated. Anyone know?

wet pilot
#

I don't remember that one

fleet swallow
#

They are Bluetooth LE bulbs and there is a wifi gateway for them as well.

forest edge
#

those even still being sold?

#

I vaguely remember a C collection by GE but thought they were discontinued

#

like old

wet pilot
#

Looks like as of 4 months ago dude might still be looking in to it. That code wouldn't work as is though since the integration code structure has changed significantly since that PR was originally opened

fleet swallow
#

In fact Google updated google home and what not so you can link directly off the speaker to control them now. Only problem is like 5 max per speaker.

forest edge
#

GE was/is coming out with smart switches that don't require a neutral and nothing that doesn't require a ground. those are gonna sell like hot cakes

#

still plenty of homes without a proper ground wire in the US

fleet swallow
#

Yep

#

I got a ton of the C by GE bulbs cheap when a local store blew them out for like $5 per package of 2 bulbs.

#

The store got out of the smart home stuff.

forest edge

fleet swallow

@thick dragon I want to do some presences detection eventually. I saw a demo of one where they used bluetooth and could tell what room in a house the phone was in. Seemed kinda cool to me.

clever mortar
#

That's room assistant

fleet swallow
#

Seems cool but I can see it adds up quick might be cheaper just to do motion detectors in switches, since I was mainly thinking of using it to turn lights on and off.

#

In the movie Antitrust the main boss had something similar in his house where it would change art on the walls based on who was in the room, using monitors.

clever mortar
#

Also, tracking phones isn't that useful

fleet swallow
#

The art was monitors framed like paintings or posters or whatever.

#

you could do the same thing with tracking smart watches.

#

They are typically bluetooth.

clever mortar
#

Sure, but all that is really tracking the devices, not the people, and doesn't account for guests

fleet swallow
#

There is no realistic way to track guests other than give them a badge or something or simple motion.

clever mortar
#

Simple motion is the most reliable, affordable, way to track people (and pets)

#

Radar is a less affordable but more effective way

fleet swallow

I'm a hermit so I don't really have guests in my home. LOL

fleet swallow
clever mortar

Need some enterprise ssds for my new server build

#

No point putting consumer ssd in a zfs mirror

dusky plank
#

not sure if you can apply sth like this to ssds, don‘t think so 😛

forest edge
#

@dusky plank a little more to a nas drive than just power saving

swift niche
#

Where would I direct questions on the logbook?

rare condor
#

Lol at me running Samsung 840evo with no Raid as main Server drive running 20 VMs

hushed basalt
#

No raid is better than raid for a consumer ssd

rare condor
#

you sure about that, I think raid 1 would make more sense in most contexts?

hushed basalt
#

That raid won't feel very nice when you replace a bad drive and it has to write out the new one

#

Consumer ssds are worse than hard drives for sequential writes

clever mortar
#

Depends on your SSD

rare condor
#

in terms of failure?

hushed basalt
#

In terms of the SLC layer filling up

#

It's like SMR

#

Complicated slow write processes on the main bulk on the ssd

#

It just hides it with a super fast layer

#

Like 70MBs range

rare condor
#

Sure but old school saying RAID is not a backup, having two drives is nice as if one fails even consumer grade you have a system which still runs

#

Then you restore from your backup and go about your day

hushed basalt
#

True but your writing ability will be tanked during that rebalance

#

So you have to be aware of it at least

rare condor
#

Out of interest where are you guys storing offsite backups?

hushed basalt
#

B2

#

I should probably use Google drive

rare condor
#

meh you need to pay for an apps account and who knows, maybe one day stops working

hushed basalt
#

Yeah that's my other reservation

#

B2 is atleast object storage so unless they massively fuck up or shut down they will keep it

#

As you're paying for it completely

rare condor
#

I have an education account but I don't use it for this reason

hushed basalt
#

I mean you could always use it

#

And change if it looks like it's going away

#

How many GB do you want to backup offsite

rare condor
#

70TB

hushed basalt
#

Oof

#

Thats.. a lot?

rare condor

I only care about 10TB

#

60Tb I can download again

hushed basalt

Don't offsite your linux ISO:)

#

Probably do some pruning too :D

#

But 10TB is probably $50USD a month on b2

rare condor
#

ok nvm

hushed basalt
#

I would either a) set up a simple NAS at your parents house and backup to that

#

Or use google cloud

#

Google drive will be the cheapest by far

Here's me with my 7TB lol

And 1TB I care about

hushed basalt
#

It's rolled into the duties

#

It's not a fixed percentage, i think it depends a lot on class of goods and country of origin on that component after the 10%

#

But you pay the 10% GST on the product, shipping and duties not just the product

rare condor
#

Looking at SSDs I have no idea too many options at wildly different price ranges

#

no idea why some are like $100 and other $600 with similar speeds and endurance

any of you folks have a hybrid water heater?

#

I've been thinking about a hybrid water heater - it would server the dual purpose of cooling off my storage room. Finding solid numbers on cost recovery is tough.

scenic radish

reminds me, i'm supposed to do a long-term cost analysis for my condo board this weekend on buying LED lamps rated for enclosed fixtures vs. buying the cheaper non-rated lamps and no lie i'm too excited about it

#

not only do i like doing analyses like that but i also am particularly interested in lighting in general

last dirge
#

@timid warren my utility offers a credit if you buy one

#

and it's about the same price as a high efficiency water heater

scenic radish
#

do the strips just kick in when faster heating is required like when lots of hot water is being used at once?

timid warren
#

Cool. Mine does not. My WH is 15 years old, not efficient at all. A standard replacement would be $700 vs. $2000 for the nice hybrid.

#

@scenic radish - yes. Works like emergency heat on a heat pump.

scenic radish
#

nice, makes sense

#

that's kind of what i was thinking. makes sense to apply the same concept to a water heater

tidal bronze
#

@last dirge why not tankless

last dirge
#

because there's only 2 people in the house

#

@scenic radish yeah, same as a heat pump for HVAC

#

if it needs more capacity than just shifting heat will allow it turns on the strips

unreal orbit

And gas is cheaper than electricity here

scenic radish

there are gas tankless

tidal bronze

@hearty depot my tankless got wifi but pointless

unreal orbit
#

What is it supposed to give you? Change temp on the fly?

tidal bronze
#

Well only use case would be long term vacation and reducing the temp for circulation.

timid warren
#

Change modes (vacation, eco mode - disables heat strips), get notifications of problems

scenic radish

hopefully that works locally

hushed basalt

hushed basalt

#

Instantaneous gas has taken a lot of their thunder

#

I'm a fan of heat pumps though

tidal bronze
#

Tankless and circulator FTW

hushed basalt
#

Combined with PV solar

#

Circulator with tankless?

tidal bronze
#

Yep. Hate waiting for hot water on any faucet

hushed basalt
#

Doesn't that require the tankless to be constantly firing though

tidal bronze
#

Fires a little more than not having one but I like the convenience

hushed basalt
#

Most tankless ive seen here have quite high minimum firing points

#

So they will just overheat and shutoff

#

And you have cold water until it cools down and fires back on

#

And so the cycle continues

dusky plank
#

district heating ftw

tidal bronze
#

Circulator models are slightly expensive than the stock ones.

hushed basalt
#

My goal is to have a heatpump HWS

#

And have it go to max safe temp when I'm producing surplus PV

#

And then dial back the thermostat when there's not surplus

#

Use the extra thermal energy in the tank as a battery of sorts.

#

As a 70 degree tank can deliver a lot more warm water than a 50 degree tank of the same volume

#

There's more ways to take advantage of surplus PV than dumping it in a powerwall

The good news is the Drobo started up fine after cooling off. The bad news is the fan is indeed completely dead. The worse news is that in the process of moving it to diagnose the fan, it decided one of the drives was removed and has now started a 60-hour rebuild. With no cooling, that is not going to go well. But powering it off risks destroying the volume. Sometimes I hate computers. Aiming a fan at it while I make up my mind whether to just scrap the damned thing.

dusky plank

yep I could, but I had the pi laying around
plus: this space is in my entry and the pi converts analog video from a peephole camera with a usb video grabber to h264 and streams it to my HA, so I get a notification when my bell rings and no one notices I have a camera there

nope, its a amazon peephole cam let me get you the link...

I think that's the only device I have outdoors. The camera I have in the backyard is actually outdoor rated, but it's also under an eave

unreal orbit

My camera notification automations are crazy. They are tied to image-processing with TF.

green inlet

wet pilot
#

With a legal download believe it or not

#

Att fiber plus spectrum cable here. I apparently could get "gig" from spectrum too but I'd have to pay to have them install it and use their equipment

forest edge
#

gig from spectrum is not true gigabit

#

it's like 920 or something lol

hushed basalt
#

I might go dual wan when we have a house

calm crow
#

Anyone have any issues with iOS HomeAssistant and trying to get the sensors to sync?

wet pilot
#

Exactly. Hence "gig"

hushed basalt
#

Fixed wireless of some sort

wet pilot
calm crow
#

@wet pilot you rascal

wet pilot
#

Though att fiber isn't fully gig most of the time either

#

It's closer though and with lower latency

forest edge
#

at&t says it's fiber but that crap is not fiber.. maybe at some point along the line it has fiber but it certianly is not fiber lol

wet pilot
#

I'm FTTH

forest edge
#

KC got google fiber when that came out but it never reached me

wet pilot
#

Ont box in my office

forest edge
#

course google fiber has taken a huge dump lately

wet pilot
#

I need to call to bitch at spectrum to get them to bury their line though

#

Been a month already

forest edge
#

the coax the neighbor mowed?

wet pilot
#

Nah, that was the att glass

forest edge
#

oh

wet pilot
#

The spectrum line was also cut though at some point

forest edge
#

not sure what the tool is they use but you could do it yourself if it's just laying on the ground

#

it only goes in a few inches and thats it

wet pilot
#

Fuck that 😂

forest edge
#

lol

#

well if it rains enough it may bury itself lol

wet pilot
#

Eh coax is a bit too thick for that

#

They ran the line up along the house too so it's less likely to happen there

#

At least it's not in the mowing path

forest edge
#

google says trenching shovel but i am sure i saw them use something more specialty

wet pilot
#

For fiber they will sometimes use a fork looking tool to push it in

#

Att actually cut it into the dirt this time though

#

Trenched under my driveway too because I made sure they didn't take the lazy way this time

forest edge
#

i imagine they get more shit for not properly burying the fiber line than those who bury coax

wet pilot
#

Yeah, much more of a pita to spice fiber. Most will just straight up replace it rather than deal with it

#

Whomever laid the runs for my neighborhood did it stupid though. Closest. Node is 5 houses down from me instead of doing it every 2 like they're supposed to

#

So they had to run something stupid long

forest edge
#

lol

wet pilot
#

There's conduit from the node to the front of my house though

forest edge
#

yours on a pole or one of those ground boxes?

wet pilot
#

In ground

forest edge
#

well 5 houses seems about right. I think they do that here. my cousin has that and IO don't recall seeing a box every 2 houses

#

mines on a pole

wet pilot
#

Att tech and the bury techs were bitching about it when I hauled them out

forest edge
#

i'm sure. alot more work when you are the last house on a run lol

wet pilot
#

The run was longer than the supply of fiber they ship their techs out with. Dude wanted to replace the run but couldn't

forest edge
#

strange

wet pilot
#

He had 200ft in his truck. My run was about 1200

forest edge
#

lol

#

200ft sounds a bit short

#

hell my pole run is about 200ft lol

#

maybe more

wet pilot
#

Yup, would be enough for pole on the property to the house though in most cases though department of redundancy department

forest edge
#

well i imagine they will be forcing us all to go wireless soon enough

wet pilot
#

They'll try

forest edge
#

people here already bitching cause sprint wanted to put 5g relays on some of the poles through the nbeighborhood lol

wet pilot
#

They can pry my 2 hard-line connections from my cold dead hands

forest edge
#

lmao

#

I love how my cities reddit went from hundreds of posts about BLM and the police to "where can i get covid tested?"

#

was a hard switch too, not gradual. hundreds of one type to hundreds of the other lmao

#

then of course you get random posts about someone in the woods operating a flame thrower and a video with all these "kids" saying, "wow cool!" and "omg they are going to burn the whole place down"

wet pilot
#

CLT subreddit had been pretty stable throughout. The local state senator posts regularly though which is cool

forest edge
#

interesting. I would stay away from reddit or social media in general if I had an "office" job lol

#

too much drama

wet pilot
#

Lol

hushed basalt
#

Little one is turning switches off at the wall for fun

#

My good little UPS tester

rare condor
#

So this is pretty dumb but I never realised I was supposed to vent my Dryer, I always just opened a door when it ran on humid days.

forest edge
#

what do you mean vent? on a gas dryer or electric?

rare condor
#

Electric Vented

forest edge
#

lol

#

yea

#

you vent out the humidity on electric, should also have a lent catcher

rare condor
#

yeah has lint catcher but I never vent it, has worked like this for 20 years

#

Would get less efficient as humidty rises

hushed basalt
#

I have a condensing heat pump

#

I'm certain the extra cost has paid for itself very quickly in power savings

#

Plus all the water goes down the drain

rare condor
#

Yeah it seem Australian's just ignore the need for a Vent

hushed basalt
#

Yep

rare condor
#

Heat Pumps obviously way better but $$

hushed basalt
#

Australians ignore the need for lots of things

#

I got it quite cheap from JB Hifi

#

It was about the same as a standard dryer of those features

#

Like automatic stop etc

rare condor
#

I was speaking to a builder and he said he had never installed one for a vented dryer...

hushed basalt
#

Plus venting would demolish your heating and cooling costs

rare condor
#

Seems poor given manual explicitly states it should be

#

what do you mean?

hushed basalt
#

Well if you vent the air

#

You have to make it up with outdoor air

#

So it's like leaving a window open

rare condor
#

no worries, Australian houses are designed with drafts for this purpose anyway 😛 😅

hushed basalt
#

:'(

#

Builders here don't even know what a heat recovery ventilator is

#

Our electrolux heat pump dryer was about $800 I think

#

Works great. Gentle. Works on wool

rare condor
#

damn thats cheap af

hushed basalt
#

Yeah I think it was $1200rrp

#

I asked the saleswoman what she could do, it was floor model and I guess she just wanted it gone

rare condor
#

Are heat recovery ventilators completely passive albeit the fan and do they run 24/7?

hushed basalt
#

But appliancesonline has models from $600-$2400 atm

#

Besides the fan yes

#

They're just air to air radiators basically

rare condor
#

yeah makes a lot of sense

hushed basalt
#

They have variable speed fans but they would generally run full time

rare condor
#

It would really only make sense if the fan is triggered by humidity or CO2 level

hushed basalt
#

Plus they can have summer bypass

rare condor
#

Do they have wall controllers?

hushed basalt
#

Yeah the one I had in accomodation in the UK had GPIOs for control

rare condor
#

I'll admit I never knew about them

hushed basalt
#

Plus a wall controller

rare condor
#

interesting

hushed basalt
#

They have in and out fans too

#

Independently controllable

#

And summer bypass when outdoor air is better than indoor air and you don't want to heat exchnage it

#

The other big thing is the filters as well

#

Basic prinicple seal the house airtight, then all your intake goes through high quality filters

#

And a rougher filter on the exhaust so you don't clog the HRV honeycomb

rare condor
#

Fair I recently bought Xiaomi Air Purifiers after the Bush fires

hushed basalt
#

Yeah similar principle. Although if you had a passivhaus with a HRV you wouldn't even notice the fires indoor

#

You'd probably have to change your filters though haha

#

The basics are. Houses should be sealed airtight. But then we need a way to get fresh air and remove pollutants. But we don't want to waste all the energy we've put into/removed from the air, so let's recovery some of it and bring in filtered fresh air at a dedicated location

#

I think good systems will wind down the exchange rate when there's not much CO2 or humidity being produced. And ramp it up if you have a house party or long showers etc

#

They actually replace your exhaust fans too etc

rare condor
#

yeah makes sense

hushed basalt
#

No vented rangehood too

#

The practice seems to use carbon filtered unvented rangehood

#

Then the HRV exhausts the general kitchen

#

Plus in Australia the only people who have these are rich dentists and the likes, so they'll probably just use their $50k outdoor kitchen to cook smokey stuff

#

Cries in wealth inequality :'(

forest edge
#

we have no vented range hoods. infact most above stove microwaves don't offer a vent option for the rang vent built into them

#

mine dosen't even have carbon filters. just mesh

clever mortar
#

Vented hoods here, at least on many new builds

#

Whether there's a filter or not varies a lot though

#

I'd rather a sealed house with HRV, but 🤷

hushed basalt
#

If it's vented the filter is just to protect the fan

forest edge
#

don't see a point to a filter if vented to outside

clever mortar
#

Cuts down on the crap going into the extractor 😄

hushed basalt
#

You don't want your fan getting covered in a layer of grease
