looks like apple and google are rolling out the covid tracing stuff today
what's it gonna trace?
who you infected or who infected you etc...
oh that's cool. That's going to lay a lot of guilt around
I GOT IT
someone was able to help me on the ubiquiti discord. i was thinking of things wrong
what was it? (out of curiosity)
so i was thinking destination was destination on the LAN
but it's where the WAN request is going to
so, basically, i'm dum
ah lol
like... i was thinking the router would accept WAN requests and send them to the destination
basically i was thinking NGINX...
i hate myself
So you're not going to return it?
🤢

i hate myself
@scenic radish 🤣
@tidal bronze I got it working perfectly with the white strip
By upping the PSU voltage to 5.5v, inserting the 3.3v from the nodemcu to the strip on one end, and 5v from the PSU on the other end
And I'm like wtf
@scenic radish I guess you are getting used to ER in and out concept lmao.
@clear ferry not normal but as long as you got it working. It has always been plug and play for me as long as I can remember. Even from mclighting days.
Yeah, it was with the black 2812, not with the white 2812, not with the string 2811 or the Christmas 2811
Never did I use level shifters or any of that hoopla
@tidal bronze yeah i have basic networking knowledge but i haven't really dealt with firewalls, at least not directly

I've worked with networking for over 20 years, I still suck at L3 and above
But I grasp most of it
@scenic radish I hear you. ER direction of dara travel or rather how they interpret it makes even more confusing 😆
yeah, like wtf man
SOURCE and DESTINATION makes it sound like WAN and LAN
installing unifi controller in docker right now 🎉
It helps to draw stuff
hey, networking talk. anyone know of a good explainer for how to host ipv6 services at home?
without NAT and static IPs the concepts kinda break my brain
ipv6 is pretty terrible from a "remembering an ip address" standpoint
probably a /64
i have ipv6 working fine for clients
but if i wanted to set up a webserver with a public DNS, that's escaping me
you'll route the public address through to whatever is on your network behind a firewall
and how do i keep that address stable?
with prefix delegation and self-assigning
i was asking if anyone knew of a good guide, not trying to get a lesson here 🙂
ah, nope dont know of one
but how your host gest its address is up to you, dhcpv6, static, slaac, or static
and neighbor discovery will handle it from there to your router
forget about arp and broacasts, etc
yay multicast
that's all icmpv6 now?
thats part of it
Hi All, just joined discord.. Have been using HA for few months and want to thank all the devs for the awesome work and a wonderful piece of software.. I am a former programmer myself, although not professionally Python developer, I have good understanding of it; I have a few ideas for implementation, and I would like to contribute to the ever growing code base, are there any guides on how to setup the dev box, create a branch and dev, test and create pull requests? I would like to start small to get the hand of it.. Thanks in advance..
@digital cradle the dev docs are here: https://developers.home-assistant.io/
If you have development type questions, the devs hang out in the various #developers channels down below
Welcome!
@amber bramble thank goodness DNS is mandatory and part of the ipv6 stack then
So HASS has its own following in China where its sold at markets in Shenzhen and is used my numerous Chinese users. Sold on SBCs (not raspi). Has its own Chinese forum (https://bbs.hassbian.com/thread-8414-1-1.html) and Chinese specific plugins. I didn't realise until I spotted it controlling LEDs in a photo from my last visit and I got curious
Good enough @unreal orbit ?
Beautiful!
Honestly probably the best I’ve ever done in softwood. And that was all freehand. Those new saws are a dream!
Should have sharpened my chissel, though...
huh, HASS was used for a food processing machine.
I wonder what other stuff has been using it
Hi all! My binary_sensor.updater is not working as expected.. Release 0.110.0 is now available but sensor state is 'off' and showing the newest version as 109.6... any ideas on how to make it refresh more frequently?
What happens to the “general” channel here?
It was split into others. If you have trouble finding the right place to discuss a topic, people in here can help you.
Very nice thomasloven
could you image if this server only had one text channel lol
Lol that would be worse than our current channel layout
lol
this is the only channel for regular chat right?
Not much regular happens here
Why?
I have nothing to offer them, I suppose
I had the whole server muted for a bit but I got pinged and sucked back in
Ha, I learn more than I help sometimes, just by reading what people are doing
Yeah I can appreciate that but I have so many discord servers I don't have time to read everywhere
Im always floating between channels to pick up on what people are doing . every once and a while i may have something to contribute
beta is always fun during that cycle
I barely use HA really atm
I use the app more for getting information than actually automating things lol
quite a lot of new things these past few releases, come on back, the water is nice
I am on 107.something
same
I am gonna automate my humidifier for this coming winter, and then try to get something going for irrigation
i try to stay N-2
only thing I control right now is temperature
📎
those are the things i leave to their onboard sensors. not sure what value i could provide above and beyond.
ok so the edgerouter x is pretty cool
hey good to hear!
i have everything set up now including my guest network with no access to things on the trusted LAN
all this router talk got me in the mood to move my pfsense to a less ancient machine
very nice
i like that you can ssh to the router
But you have to use vi
same tbh, but i wanted an upgrade from my google wifi
im noticing a pattern
lol edgerouter
whats wrong with vi?
Just got into Linux within the last couple years....so nano
Just what I learned
Lmao
silly people
Nano is so.....user friendly. When I use vi I spend more time googling what the codes are
windows ships with a perfectly fine text editor
you get it fixed @scenic radish
edlin?
windows ships with a perfectly fine text editor
@ocean mirage hey I grew up using that to make webpages haha
I definitely made a mistake in my dual wan setup. My irc client is very angry with me
oh lord lol
I sort of still use irc sometimes
there are things you cannot do on discord, according to the TOS and guidelines
it was such a good medium we've been trying to replace it ever since
i swear group chat was a solve problem but every other year we have a whole new breed
lol irc
I don't much like irc anymore but say, if you have a community built around piracy, for example, its probably best to not have that on discord
was always fun to mute people in irc
@fathom sparrow i did! you're not gonna believe this either. it turns out...
🥁
i was a dumbass
I mean, it's a given. What were you doin?
yeah for sure
i was able to set up my guest network LAN restrictions without too much googling
getting to know the firewall better
can't wait to accidentally open something up that i didn't want to
yah that stuff is on my list. There's a series of videos I plan on watching
just describing what that stuff means
might also set up an IoT VLAN, but i'll need to do some digging first
that's not too bad. You'll end up having to redo a bunch of your HA stuff though if you were using static pis
ips*
yeah, i use the cloud9 IDE which has global find/replace
shouldn't be too bad
i'll have to set up mDNS reflection too
what's that do
allows mDNS to work across subnets
discovery relies on mDNS, and even if you set static IPs for google home devices for home assistant you still need mDNS for the integration to work
(as i've read recently)
Eh, you can get it to work via IP but you lose the groups
Anyone here try out OpenHAB and HomeSeer?
I would never try homeseer
from what I understand, it's currently a shit show
bascially the same amount of devs as HA but the price tag is in the hundreds just for the software. No thanks.
OpenHab is pretty limited from what I've heard, but I've never actually tried it
I have no issue paying if it actually works
The amount of time I've sank this week into HA has cost me way more than a couple hundred. Crap even Nexia wasn't this terrible
🔥
to be fair, my issues all revolve around Z-wave, so...HA could be just fine, and maybe the issue is with OZW, but I've used OZW before in custom settings and it wasn't all crazy
Word of advice. Avoid small zwave companies
For example, I started fresh, totally new HA install, and some formerly enrolled z-wave devices just showed up when I turned on the z-wave integration. Ok fine, so most of the switches worked. Then I tried to add something, no go...I try and remove a node, no go
Another word of advice: switch your zwave integration to decouple with HA
so right now, it's pretty cool, I've removed two GE switches, so now HA can't do anything with any z-wave device, even though before trying to remove two nodes it could
nexia has never delivered on a single product for me. I've returned them all.
I mean at least it could enroll and remove and turn stuff on and off lol
it was a POS but crap
The biggest thing I wanted out of this that SmartThings didn't give me was local push
of course the other big issue right now is so many people are buying the SmartThings hub it's impossible to find, and I have 4 sites that need something to replace Wink
@worldly widget I am buying a 35k tractor and its going to be turn key cause i dont want to rebuild one ....but on the other hand i building a 600 hp 351 clevland engine but i know every bolt and gasket and spec and how i know exactly how it works and limitations. Ha is a build yourself and learn what is going on... if your not ready for that then there are other options
For sure, I get that comparison, but when very basic things don't work, it's beyond just "ready for that"
I've never had an issue with zwave. Have you consulted anyone on the issues your having?
I have a dozen PI's running and own an MSP, I manage dozens of servers...so this isn't my first rodeo doing stuff in the tech world
But there are tons of people who have very successful zwave mesh networks working
i been here since version .19 ...sometimes the road is bumpy but saying it dont work is NOT FAIR
agreed, so I don't know what gives .I keep changing pieces of the pie to figure out what is really wrong
well so far for me, I'd give the z-wave portion of HA a 0 out of 10 for usability. It could be that my z-stick is FUBAR :/
I'm trying on a whole new z-stick, whole new Pi, totally fresh HA instance, and a new Honeywell z-wave plus switch
Are you using zwave plus devices?
yeah
Now
The Honeywell and the ge are basically the same thing
I figured they were both Jasco
Yup
A lot of my zwave problems went out the window when I cleared up old nodes and added a usb extension
Also doing a network heal once everything is in its proper place
yeah maybe the best thing is to set it all up in OZWCP and then import into HA
i think #zwave-archived would be a better place for this conv
just add one node at a time. You should also verify that the jasco devices aren't dead. I've had 3 in ~35 switches/dimmers from jasco die at the 3 year mark
NO HOME ASSISTANT SUPPORT HERE (look at the other channels for that). NO POLITICS OR RELIGION!
BE CIVIL to one another or get BANNED permanently.
Agreed, my original question was the comparison with HomeSeer and OpenHAB
wasn't trying to start an argument was just a legit question of people's thoughts on the comparisons
well lets go to the chevy dealer and ask about ford 🤣
you can do that
it's like saying no one should walk into Apple and ask about how macOS compares with Windows, seems legit to me
If you are tech savvy, it is my belief that the granularity you will get out oh HAss will be worth the work
But it doesn’t happen overnight
and get a honest opinion ...right
@green inlet Perfect, that's the type of response I was looking for
@green inlet suck up 🤣
Plus, I have never met people more willing to help than the HAss community.
lol that's the main reason I'm here, because going through Reddit this seemed like the most active community
you can get the same granularity from homeseer... but the software is $300 and each add on is $40. So lets say you wanted alexa with zwave. $380
not including the hardware
Vasiley doesn’t know it but he is going to rebuild a corvette for me 🤣
nope no chevys for me
HA still has way more integrations than homeseer too
yes, and even though you pay for homeseer, it's still not guaranteed to work.. just like HA.
@worldly widget , I bought a pi about 3-4 years ago cause I someone talking about them on Facebook. Thought it would be a good hobby. Did not know a lick of linux.
Only difference from home seer is that they've been doing this before competition. Which allowed them to have this price point.
you can get the same granularity from homeseer... but the software is $300 and each add on is $40. So lets say you wanted alexa with zwave. $380
@fathom sparrow Dang, the add on part stinks
and EVERYTHING is an addon
and the addons aren't even official, they are made by random people
I have no clue how they stay in business
Cause people believe if you pay a big price tag, it must be good
Oh no....here goes the neighborhood. Ska is here
How many integrations that an average user uses in HA? It doesn’t matter how many it supports, I hardly use maybe 15 different integrations out of hundreds.
would make me think twice out sending alerts to my printer via ipp
Sending alerts to your printer?
dumb joke about using the ipp integration as a notify target
for when its low on ink...
Not sure when was the last time I used a printer at home. Kids print a bunch of stuff for fun, that’s pretty much it.
I am mixed. Every once in a while a new integration comes out that interests me. Most of the time I am just checking breaking changes. I wish there was a cycle like the release cycle though. Like one update is nothing but fixing broken stuff and concentrating on integrating custom comports and then the next is new stuff.
Time to upgrade my HA. Every time I upgrade HA, I comment out more stuff and keep trimming my setup.
Most of the new integrations are Europe based integrations... I wish we can filter them by country based integrations.
@green inlet i was thinking that the other day, odds could be break/fix/stabiility, evens could be new features
After using HA for 4+ years, I realized the most used components at home are Camera, door and home security notifications along with weather. Everything else is secondary.
Yea...I am not knowledgeable enough to do anything but update and play with my own setup. Help here and there. So, I take what they give me 🤣
Never upgrade your production to .0 versions. I usually upgrade when the next version is about to be released where the version is something like 0.xxx.6 or something.
I always update on .0
I thank people like you @green inlet for trying out and reporting bugs 😂
Like a band-aid......just get it over quick and quit messing around
I have had very few problems since the started the current release cycle. All the beta guys are doing the heavy lifts
We have a covid integration on HA - what’s missing is the unemployment sensor/counter. That seem to be the biggest issue now!
Not that these sensors help with solving any of the problems, but only for awareness!
just create a template sensor that outputs 'alot'
Yes, funny but sad at the same time!
New tosh.o episode is out, funny as hell as usual.
I stopped watching comedy central because it's not offered on any streaming service
They are all in YouTube these days.
with how many ads?
None. I hardly get any ads. If I do, just one in the beginning.
holy shit tosh is still about? thats not a name I have heard in like 10 years
Yes, he still does web redemptions 😆
@forest edge dude, I’m still waiting for the helmet and fly shield! It is sitting in NY and IL since April 15!
slow going through the covid blockade
hell some states require people to self isolate for 2 weeks if they had come from any of those "hot" states
cogneato dosen't post in here enough, I have to go into #330944238910963714 to see how he's doing lol
Yeah, not ordering any more until I get my old orders delivered
guy works too hard at helping others lol
well just don't order anything that has to come through the northeast hehe
Doesn’t he get paid for it? 🤣
well don't we all? isn't helping others it's own reward? insert-corny-emoji-face-here
I swear half the nakeds I chase with a spear in this game this time at night are from the UK
@last dirge
sprinkler calibration?
This makes easier.
I got a landscaping redefiner blade I'm going to try to adapt to my stick edger this weekend
woohoo for saving $400
Any progress on converting the mower ?
that's on hold until I don't have to mow every 2 days
Lol
I should probably buy those pouches though
Guys are mowing tomorrow after 3 week skip. Reseeding done.
creeping turf FTW
I know. Going to see water consumption on rotors this summer if not creeper it is.
gotta mow a hell of a lot more often
but it looks great
my neighbor pays TruGreen some obsurd amount
I bought a bag of urea for $40 2 years ago and I've still got some left
my yard looks twice as good as his 🙂
Lol 👍
it's finally to the point where it's holding stripes between mows
I wonder if I'm causing all kinds of interference for my neighbors by transmitting at 23 dBm
@scenic radish on what?
I make a lot of noise on wifi and I have DFS channel 100 all to my self
18 dBm for 2.4 is a good match for a dual band network with one ESSID
with 5 on high
devices should roam off of 2.4 to 5 naturaly
and 2.4 should still cover the house
Tbh I'm getting a great signal with 5 everywhere
thats good, then tune down 2.4 to help push your devices to 5
Yeah I knocked 2.4 down to 15
what device do you have?
AP AC lite
Yeah a lifx bulb on my balcony
still good enough without spending more $$
The signal is going through brick and CMU
Oh and it's in a fixture with a metal body lol
Ooo neato
$99 UniFi 6 Lite is a 2x2 Wi-Fi 6 access point that delivers up to 1.5 Gbps aggregate radio rate with 5 GHz (MU-MIMO and OFDMA) and 2.4 GHz (MIMO) radios. Mount UniFi 6 Lite horizontally in the ceiling to cover a high-density environment, or mount it vertically on the wall to extend its range. UniFi 6 Lite has a compact and nano-sized design, so it can use nanoHD covers and mounting accessories.
but lets be real with bandwith... 5 GHz band 2x2 MU-MIMO and OFDMA with radio rate of 1.2 Gbps
should make a decent AP for its price
Yeah that sounds pretty good
i was tempted to pick that up this morning when it was in stock
I wasn't... i ma sucker for the HDs...
when the HD versions for wifi 6 come out... ill be soo tempted
its coming soon i bet
HomeKit Cameras pogggg
@modest valve small issue with them tho
Morning folks

@clear ferry game i'm playing now called Rust is mostly about nakeds running around with a rock trying to kill each other for what little scraps they might get. May remind you of your days before internet. lol
This sounds like pubg @forest edge
it's kinda like it, pubg took a lot from rust
pubg is a battle royal, this is more of a minecraft type survivval
Sounds like it, when I played it, we just ran around killing folks with stuff we found.
Was near impossible to find your team
yeah I last played in 2014 and it was wild
Never heard of it
@clear ferry it's right up your ally. https://i.gifer.com/78jI.gif
I never played the first postal
They are all fun
postal was good
Redneck rampage too
"Caught in a landslide" 🙄
Sure, but we are not doing the correct lyrics you b00b
Hi All! 👋 I'm after recommendations on database for HA. Are you guys using the standard SQLite or have you moved to MariaDB / MySQL?
That's what I thought.. but my knowledge of database engines is quite limited.. thanks
Looking at History and Logbook with SQLite is just a pain
And influxdb for trend data and longtime history
Yes I was going to install influxdb as well..
So how do I switch to MariaDB? Is it an add-on right?
If you run #330944238910963714 that is the easiest way, we others run it in docker, jails, dedicated database hosts etc
My friends and I played Dayz once
We spent hours trying to find each other
One friend got killed by a random,. Respawned, killed the guy who killed him then took back his stuff and walked to me for 30 minutes
Then I accidently killed him with bleach
lol
atleast in rust you get a map with cords and once you do find friends you can add them to a team and then see thier dots on the map
Yeah dayz is like
"I'm at ... Something russian"
Fun fact. Half life 2 is set in Russia
lol dayz is set in russia
russia makes a good back drop for after end of world stuff
Asking back here as usual, because PC building subs don't seem to know : Does 12V RGB need a separate controller and power supply?
(when plugged in a motherboard's 12V RGB headers)
Separate controller and power supply from ... what?
Some online sources seem to indicate the 12V RGB header sends data, power is taken from Molex (which is 5V though...?), and you plug a controller in half way but why do you need a controller if the header sends data...
Molex is typically 5V (red) and 12V (yellow)
I see
Three seconds on Google would tell you that 😛
So would I be getting data sent through the RGB header, power from Molex and then just no controller?
🤷
I struggle to understand why you would need one, isn't the RGB header providing the data? 🤔
Power from Molex, yes. Data... I have no idea, I've never seen the point of putting lighting inside a computer.
Which is why I don't waste my time with them 😉
The second most important thing to most people after performance is aesthetics
Silence
And what better aesthetics than flashy lights? Same reason smart bulbs exist tbh
That scene has been around forever. It was a thing 20 years ago too, it will be in another 20.
I need ridiculously cheap smart bulbs on that topic, but something acceptably bright
It's just a very niche scene, for those that like bling
806lm just doesn't cut it to illuminate a room
i myself have a 1,100lm LIFX A60, but I really can't afford £55/bulb so I'm just trying to find white-only dimmables for next to nothing on AliExpress
Multiple bulbs, not one single bulb
Some of them seem to indicate 1,350lm+ but I'm really not sure how much I want to trust the statistics on AliExpress
hmm?
You can get 4 x 800 lumen Osram smart bulbs for £50 on Amazon
Yeah but you still can't illuminate a whole room with a single 800lm
https://smile.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B077X667M4/ actually, £35
Sure, but don't use one bulb, use a few around the room
It looks better too
We only have one socket in each room though...?
Except the living room which has two sockets
So use lamps around the room, honestly, multiple dimmer light sources look and feel much nicer than one central really bright thing
Our main living space is about 5m square, it's typically lit by four bulbs that average around 350 lumen each.
Sure, if we want more light, we can turn on more, but that's enough
Ours is 1,600lm + 1,600lm
and then two ambients on the wall that have a separate switch for about 400-600lm (never checked)
I've just found out AliExpress have a very interesting way of advertising smart lights
They say a bulb is 15W RGBWW
Warm White, not tunable
But in fact, it's 15W/1350lm WW + 5W/400lm RGB
They use 2 separate LEDs for the RGB and the white 🤔
That's normal
oh opposite of what i said
You really want CCT though, for warm to cold whites
Budget is pretty low but I'll see
I only had money to splurge for a high-tier bulb for myself (the A60), the rest is for the rest of the house i.e. my mum
So convincing of buying smart bulbs largely depends on price lol
(((hence why i'm looking on ax)))
Unfortunately those Osram lights are also E27 and ZigBee
Need Wi-Fi and B22, I have B22 adapters but any time I've tried to use one it creates a buzzing noise
I know CC2531 is a solution but it's more effort than it's worth here
Be wary of wifi if you plan on adding lots of lights. Some routers will start struggling after you connect multiple devices to the network
you can get preflashed CC2531
#zigbee-archived is a good solution
around 9-10 lamps max
There also were offerings on ebay last time I checked with very competitive price but without the antenna and case
Living 1, Living 2, (ambients are staying normal), corridor, kitchen, garden, upper corridor, wardrobe, bedroom, other bedroom, other bedroom side lighting
iirc routers only complain once you build a pretty large network
https://www.tindie.com/products/electrolama/zzh-cc2652r-multiprotocol-rf-stick/ would be my recommendation for anybody being serious
Ideally I'd need an antenna
I doubt a 2531 would even be able to reach across the entire house when the router can't
4000/4000 “hyper fibre” plans are now available in some parts of NZ... I’m going to need a bigger server
For Zigbee you need routers
Personally I went with milights and haven't had many issues with them using a DIY controller. That could be an option worth looking at as well.
Anybody trying to build a mesh without routers clearly hasn't taken the time to learn about Zigbee
I can spend roughly £8 max per bulb or she'll ask what the fuck is the point of this
How's Sengled?
I have currently no smart bulbs
Because those are connected to wall switches, which are the things that should be smart
No
And another noob question, why when googling "Alexa smart blinds" do I get quotes for like... £1,400+...?
If normal electric blinds are around £130 would it not be a matter of adding a wi-fi controller...?
you could definitely #diy-archived it
I guess I will have to eventually be forced to convert to ZigBee
using led strip to hold a mold together?
oh no, my locally-controlled IoT devices that have no right communicating outside my network can't phone home. poor things 😢
But how will NSA/Google/Apple/Chyna now know what you're up to?
C H Y N A
@forest edge cloud lamp!
Just with wled + ha + esp + wwln instead of Arduino + ir + microphone
oooooooooo
oh no, my locally-controlled IoT devices that have no right communicating outside my network can't phone home. poor things 😢
@scenic radish oh they can, they just do it now without you seeing
Fallback to ipv2
@forest edge cloud lamp!
@clear ferry wanting to do this huh? https://blog.arduino.cc/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/Untitled1.gif

TIL the CEO of Patreon plays keyboards in Pomplamoose
Naughty of Things?
@clear ferry build this next lol https://technabob.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/rocket_lamp_1.jpg
That's pretty cool
Ohio businesses are back up and running... including public pools, and everything!
yup
covid party in ohio!
we don't have beaches nearby - people go crazy with the pools during summer
they are opening things up here slowly but public pools was specifically mentioned to be the last thing to evver open up if at all for this year lol
people here honestly think if people start dying they will reclose everything back down. no chance in hell that would happen lol
ugh my litter robot has two sensors one that detects if a cat is in the thing and another which is just abeam sensor to detect when the pan is full and one is 6 bucks and the other is 100 bucks and guess which one cost what and which one seems to have broke?
yes
half tempted to automate a static interval manual cleaning instruction through HA lol
I would
Just make sure you have a condition that the cat is out 😉
What litter box is this?
litterrobot3
not sure it can cycle when it's marked as full, dunno if it allows a manual cycle or not
Could always go the #diy-archived route and hack it a bit
Does it work well when it is functional?
Jesus that thing looks intense. I think I'd have a hard time convincing my cat he's not about to step into a space ship
it's awesome. had it over a year
just wasn't expecting the most expensive replaceable part to break this quickly
Yeah that's a bummer. Not under warranty?
think it only has a year warranty
The store page says 18 month, might be worth checking
yea. not 100% sure when we bought it, i'll have to ask the one who does all the spending in this house lmao
Anyone have a traeger grill with WiFi? I’ve been working on reverse engineering their app to integrate it with home assistant
And manage to be able to send post requests via insomnia which is similar to postman
that reminds me, anyone have a spare traeger grill with wifi? i'll take it off your hands for free
So I can control the grill however the authorization token is a bit difficult. I tried making a binary sensor with the REST integration but it didn’t work
Lol hey it’s an expensive grill but it’s a good investment
yeah i'm jk lol. interesting, so you are able to control it through unofficial means?
Just seeing if anyone here is in my same place and interested in working on an integration together.
Yea I am
But via insomnia
ah
I went super hardcore and went into the AWS documentation as they use an AWS endpoint that I identified via Charles a proxy app similar to wireshark
@last plaza not even Norway has opened pools yet
once you figure out cloud control, next step is local control 😛
@scenic radish lol sure will be
Trying to at least get a hacked version working.
Yeah for sure
Best of luck! Would be a good idea to make a forum post about this too. It'll just get buried here
How do I do that?
I am in need of help and I think it can be done but I could be wrong but would be nice to see if other can help. I mean heck if they need to control my grill remotely it’s fine. Lol
To test I mean lol
Ah ok that fórum. Yea! I’ll do that!
Just make sure to open port 47455 for remote access
Well it’s cloud endpoint so no need from my side. Lol
Nah I was just making a joke. 47455 is GRILL on a phone keypad lol

Lol maybe I need coffee it just passed me lol
Ehh it was obscure
But hey that’s a good way to assign ports. If I ever make a local app for the traeger or any grill.
Lol
Nah, gotta use a reverse proxy boi
Then you only need to open one port even with multiple services
Well didn’t mean externally. Meant internal
Ah right
Yes
doit
if i set up monitor on my pi 3B+ and only use it for that, do i win the award for "most overkill use ever"?
lol grill. automation: if burned meat, stop cooking
need to find an api for Tediore. {{ if making Grand Sauce return cancel }
ugh friend went into rust, tired as hell and about to log into a game where every other player is a 12 year old that screams REEE
lmao
It’s probably a battle cry for 12yrd olds
Clip was taken during live stream: twitch.tv/sovietwomble.
turn down speakers lol
What the hell did I just watch
lmao
@forest edge has been banned
whoa mod abuse!
lol
WHAT? WHAT did you say?! I CANT HEAR YOU
Gotta love some good ol' Rust.
wow the forum post for tis release has lots of replies
And lots of complaints...
all complaints about the frontend. One small icon change and the whole world burns
one would think "hey maybe I should see if there's an update to my custom lovelace card"
people like their grits the same way now as they always have
its always the same every releaes with custom cards/components
It is a little concerning when your frontend looks like complete trash after an update, I understand the knee-jerk panic
the frontend should probably handle custom cards better....if they break notify the user and disable it
but some of them like custom header cant really do that
it should be a noted risk to users who wish to use things like that
Warning your UI may look like shit after an update, check for updates at the repo 😛
all fairness if they are using anything with "custom" attached to it, they are on thier own
yea i agree
I know i would be boned if i had updated yesterday lol
i never update on day 1 unless the community thread has like 20 replies
No matter what happens, custom things will break when changes occur to the backend/frontend. The devs can only notify so much. I saw the devs reach out to a few custom cards with issues. Maybe if there was a developer announcement page for ui changes or something.
Exactly. People seem to forget custom stuff is unsupported
I'm still waiting for the point releases to settle down, or three days to pass with none 😛
THANKS FOR BREAKING MY INSTALL
but yes, that should be the first place you look if you're thinking clearly
MY WIFE IS FURIOUS
lmao
The "my wife didn't like this" response is the best
the speed at which things are changing, makes it hard for them to keep up lol
Wives don't even know which thing to be furious about anymore
|| now we know why there are so many new greenies, was for this one update alone ||
If your wife is mad, you are doing it wrong. They should be used to broken 😉
I'm glad I read that twice and it didn't say They should be broken
The problems with updates get harder to figure out when you're like me and too lazy to update often. Even when you read through the breaking changes, you miss stuff when it's five massive lists of changes
Still log files should tell you if you've done goofed up so I don't understand some people first complaining and then trying to figure it out
I don't have the drive to fix a "bunch" of stuff in a short time, I like having it spread apart some
This is why I like the venv install. I can upgrade and config check before starting
That catches 99% of the stuff I miss
eh i scroll through breaking changes, if any impact me i open the docs in a new tab and do the update and go through each open tab and update shit
if its deprecated i fix it after first boot
having some issues after upgrading to 0.110 where would be the best place to ask?
Not here...
Not sure which install you're using? If you have add-ons, or see references to either Hass.io or Supervisor, then you're using #330944238910963714. If you're running natively in Docker or in a venv then you have the #672217570283094017 install method
Depends on the issue, just check the topics on channels
"not here" lol

@orchid rose , yes, I upgrade first chance I get. No need to get behind on upgrades 😉
yea i try to update early but i usually wait for a point release or 2...espeically if i see an issue tagged for the next one tht seems i may benefit from it like a frontend dependency bump
@green inlet lives on the edge!
There's a 50% chance that something I've made work with zip ties and luck that will fail at every update
yea google won't let us use Home Assistant as the name lol
Oh right
very binary new release today 0.110.1
heh
is it possible to have 2 controllers on one set of lights for example?
NO HOME ASSISTANT SUPPORT HERE (look at the other channels for that). NO POLITICS OR RELIGION!
BE CIVIL to one another or get BANNED permanently.
I don't think that's home assistant specific, they were talking about LED strips or something earlier
As in, sure you can connect two controllers to one set of lights, but it's unlikely to behave well
Yeah that sounds like an interesting experiment
Or a way to obtain some magic smoke
If they're digital, I suspect it's more results chaotic, try again later
If they're analogue though...
Also... whyyyyy?
@dusk lodge, rather than asking a fairly vague question it's probably better to explain what you're trying to achieve so people will give you ideas on how to do it
I don't think I'll ever understand true genius
That was supposed to go to the FAQ but you get the idea lol
Lmao
@orchid rose Well, if you were to have an LED strip in a room
And wanted to be able to control it both with an app and an ir remote?
Then you need a controller that supports both
all controllers that I've seen are either IR or Wifi, not both
Also, there are non-IR remotes 😉
Or a app that sends ir signal, like home assistant with broadlink
Then just use that
Multiple ways to do it as always. That's why I think HA is so great. But you should make it so it all goes through HA if you plan on using it at all, otherwise you'll have issues with sync
how does HomeAssistant compare to openHAB..?
I use a milight remote to control all my lights. It sends a command to the diy milight hub, which in turn sends it to HA, which then sends the command to the different lights whether they are wifi, milight or something else.
I can't say for openHAB, I never used it
It doesn't have Java, so it wins by 200%
did someone say java?
You're in the HA community, you're gonna get a rather biased perspective 😉
I wouldn't even run it on a pi 4
Also, HA runs on a Pi Zero
The recommendation on a Pi3 is at least in part because it has better performance, and more capacity
What do you have available to you right now Zoe?
Also, frankly, if the cost difference between a 2 and a 3 puts you off, you shouldn't be getting into home automation 😛
What do you mean the Peugeot 108 is shit for pulling a caravan?
A Pi2B connected by Ethernet
Just try how it works for you then?
@clever mortar it doesn't put me off lol I just already own a Pi
I will I'm just looking at the recommended lists
For now it's stringing about 6 or so services together all on wifi as I don't own any zb/zw devices
It will likely boot slowly, bot as Tinkerer said, you won't get an unbiased view here 🙂
We all rather agree that HA is pretty great. We wouldn't be using it otherwise
OH is slower to change, more "stable" and therefor well suited who're happy with what it does
HA is a constantly moving target, incredibly flexible, but requires you to learn
I mean... why does boot time matter
Not just boot time
I don't shut off my Pi lol
Install time too
I've looked at what it would take to move my setup to OH, and the answer is that it's not actually possible. OH isn't capable, or flexible, enough.
Yeah but that's a one time thing...?
My Pi's been connected and running headless for 4 months without interruption
I've run headless for 15 years
See I have the actual facilities to comfortably run HA (desktop vm), I just want to do it cleverly and cheaply without dropping big money like every Youtuber seems to
Just try it out and see what you think. Most people seem to start with a Pi and move to a dedicated x86 machine at some point
I could attempt using an old laptop if I find the charger for it 🤔
If you have a Linux laptop that would probably be perfect. Don't be me and run it on a Windows gaming PC 👀
That's the plan for now if my Pi struggles
To use my gaming PC and just sleep downstairs so I don't need to listen to a jet engine
What I like about the Pi is that it's silent
Not quiet but actually silent, because it doesn't really need cooling
so is my mini PC 😛
I can get a Pi4B without any trouble, I'd just need to sell my 2B first
And I'd definitely have to settle for the basic 4B
The 4GB version is damn expensive for what it is
Laptops are usually pretty silent
@clear ferry This is what Americans and rich people have garages for
Have garage, am not rich
I've never seen more than 1 or 2 garages in London
Zoë, or boomer Norwegians in this case
London... oh boy 😄
You choose to live in London
London is where house prices start at nuts and go up
Laptops are a pretty good start tbh. A lot of people use nucs which are just the same cpu and cooling anyway
@clever mortar my gf's house is £150-200k and it would be £3m here lol
I'll try to see what I can do
Said old laptop sounds like a spacecraft
I looked at buying an apartment in London, I'm probably going to settle for Somerset instead
atx gonna brexit?
Yup, I've a friend from London who came up and looked at prices here. They were commenting on the prices being reasonable, and then I pointed out they were looking at the most expensive part of town...
My house if it was for sale would be £800k
@orchid rose just a vacation house
it's 2-bedroom 🤔
my garage is bigger than @scenic radish 's apartment
I have a loft I guess
👏
Can't think of a worse place for a vacation than UK but you come from Norway so I get it
no
shame
For now it's Windows VM or Pi2B until I get a Pi4B
the pi will work okay
It'll work on a 2B, just not recommended
2B can usB boot
Why would I usb boot?
To avoid a dead SD card
if you're buying a SD card for 5 quid, it'll last about 3 days
logging and stuff kills them
SD cards 🤢
Google for "Raspberry Pi dead SD card"
unless it's a class10, it's gonna get chewed up quickly
It'll die
I'd still use a USB SSD
It's when not if
If you buy an industrial or high write card it'll last a lot longer though
I'd still use a usb stick
hell, even a USB SATA adapter
It's fine, but there's no reason to annoy yourself by constantly swapping them out
and since you're just starting, you'll have a lot of times where your instance just barfs logs repeatedly
which will wear out the card faster
I ran my esxi host on the same usb stick for 7 years, without redirecting logs, long live usb, booo SD
I mean, I don't care about dead SD cards, but then I'm on Raspbian everywhere, with rpi-clone to another SD, so recovery is under 5 minutes
what about a 3.0 sandisk?
flash drives aren't much better
They die differently
err
@scenic radish in my experience they live a lot longer
@last dirge
executing step call service
executing step call service

I guess I own an 8 year old 5,400rpm HDD that's been running non stop?
70k hour uptime as of last week
@clear ferry really? i thought it was a similar type of flash memory
Come back when you have 15k drives that's lived for 20 years @dusk lodge
Later HDDs have proven to be extremely reliable, but they do make noise
@scenic radish I replace SD cards often in servers, yet to replace a usb
They're fairly silent when external and 5,400
Not to my ears
i have special ears
mine are yuge
Listen, listen with your special ears 👂
I don't mind the noise of HDDs, but I can hear one failing across a DC
too white
it's pSLC
SD cards 🤢
would it be better to get an SLC SD or a normal 3.0 USB?
Someone here probably knows more about these and how they handle constant writes, but SSDs should work just fine, and that's why most people recommend that route. For testing any sd cards will work just fine, and in longer term it's up to you if you find it annoying that they keep dying, and the frequency of that depends on the amount of devices as well. Just try and see what works for you.
yeah for short-term use an SD card is fine
SSD > Industrial SD > High write SD > normal SD
You can, with a little care, get a couple of years out of an SD with HA
it's not even a functional part that's not working
it's the plastic grille on top of the microwave that vents air
Yesterday I opened my Samsung Refrigerator put it back. Was making noise because of ice build up.
Hate when the fridge makes noise.
it's the plastic grille on top of the microwave that vents air
@last dirge 3D print
Make two pieces and make them attachable.
the previous tenant broke it and that's the only thing I didn't check before the new tenant moved in
Come up with a clever engineering.
I tested the microwave worked
didn't test the fan
@last plaza my print envelope is just shy of 6" wide
Does it vent outside or inside?
Make two or three pieces like puzzle pieces and attach them. 🧩
I’ve cut 8” diameter hole and ran vents outside. I removed microwave and replaced with VentaHood.
Best thing I did! 900 CFM dual fan.
makeup air?
i love how easy ESPHome makes spinning up just aobut anything
@last plaza do you have a source of makeup air? 900 CFM is a large volume
@scenic radish ah! We open the windows slightly. Otherwise it will create a vacuum inside. It also helps to pull fresh air.
@shy comet yaaaaaaaaaaas queeeen
Esphome 🤢
lol
Skallavallalalala 🤢
non- programmers!
haha, sometimes i really dont wanna mess with all that
setting up a pool water /ambient temp sensor and also about to use a stepper motor to automate the patio awning we have
There is so much fun in writing your own C code. It’s like having fresh cup of coffee in the early morning!
🐣
it is the setup before you write the code is painful part for me.
Environment setup, dependencies, getting correct versions of libraries...etc.
just tested my pool sensor and now i know that 77 in the pool is cold for me 😛
probably need it around like 90 or so, it needs to get hotter so i can enjoy it 😂
77 for Norwegians is too hot!
what do you guys use for battery power on ESPs? usb power banks?
micro nuclear usb reactors
lol
I made my own powerbanks - a ton of them!
@last plaza that sounds really interesting hmm
Super easy and super cheap to make them.
how many mah?
Get these and put 18650 batteries in then. https://www.ebay.com/itm/113830599443
Get the 18650 batteries from old laptop batteries, take out the dead ones, most likely rest are all good and you can reuse them.
hmm
That’s all there is to it.
sounds really simple ill have to look into that more
my FIL uses those batts in e-cig vapes
I have like 300 of those 18650 batteries. I got them from eRecycle center for free.
my FIL uses those batts in e-cig vapes
@wet pilot yep. Same batteries.
i mean old laptop cells specifically
I also made my own 18650 battery charger. That’s also super easy to do.
i buy them new 😄
New and branded old batteries are almost same.
oh sure, his are ancient though
how many mah should i shoot for so im not going out there often lol
Li-ion batteries hold charge very well.
standard ones i can see are 2.5 Ah
we have an above ground pool and i wanted to stick inside the vinyl liner cuz it has space
what kind of draw are you looking at?
If you want a bigger battery pack, you can make your own. That’s also very easy. You can get balance charger like IMaxB6.
@wet pilot honestly dont even know lol
and you might need a regulator in the middle since 3.7V is the "nominal" value
fully charged is 4.2V
You may want to think about solar charger for outdoors. @shy comet
ah yea didnt conside that 🙂
They are best for the pool too
yea good point
wow that was a really good idea cuz some of those have lights and are waterproof too
thank you @last plaza 🙂
Here is the charger I made. https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/400033312929742879/468948007518470145/image.jpg
anyone know how to change what ipv6 DNS servers my edgerouter x uses? i have this under system in the configuration:
name-server 1.1.1.1
name-server 1.0.0.1
name-server 2606:4700:4700::1111
name-server 2606:4700:4700::1001
but my devices appear to be using my ISPs ipv6 DNS
they're using the correct ipv4 DNS
oh, i just did that
No idea. My isp is still stuck in the 70s. Only ipv4 is supported for us.
@last plaza you mean most of the us internet infrastructure
lol
my neck
Great for Quasimodo
Great for Quasimodo
@clear ferry the USA is way behind when it comes to mobile, cellular, and internet infrastructure.
that looks horribly uncomfortable
unless the whole thing Optimus Primes and stands up
or maybe if you don't have any legs or hips due to an unfortunate biking accident
Yes, wife communicates with a lot of people over there in regards to maternity, a lot of them were frustrated over no schooling over the internet, and actually not having internet at home @last plaza
and I see a lot of strange stuff on Reddit internet over there
I still remember a report about dialup being prevalent a decade ago
@wet pilot has your wife's school started any internet stuff yet?
My college recorded, streamed and put everything online in 2002
yeah, doing some stuff
Looks like the teachers are running out of ideas. Kids come down everyday looking for stuff to do art projects using household items.
@last plaza that battery charger sure is somethin
Today they were asked to balance a balloon while playing violin!
@clear ferry it's good that your country allows the elderly to go back to school

@last dirge yup. I made so many of those battery packs, I virtually gave one to everyone I know - family, friends, even team members.
It will make a good gift item too for those excessive phone users.
Where is @rain swift - we need him to add those to his DIY list.
One last call, done for today.
What am I adding?
I've got some motion sensors on one of my lists and when I click on them it says they were bought by someone, and they are one day shipping, but I haven't seen anything, weird.
Must be a prank that amazon is playing with you!
@last dirge do you use lawn striping kit for stripes on your lawn? There are DIY options, not sure how well they work. I may have to attach them behind my tractor. It will be a pain if you have to go in reverse.
I use a reel mower
Manual or gas powered?
that one was $125
lol. What are you trying to do with the tachometer on it?
I wanna replace the engine with a motor
Yup. Makes it much easier if it is chain drive. There are belt kits available these days as folks are moving away from chains.
well, that back bit is a pulley to chain jack shaft
the "clutch" is that bit in the middle that pushes on the belt to engage the pulley on the motor
Ok... I need that tachometer and a torque metered wrench.
so is it worth the $250 upcharge to get a higher grade water heater with rheem econet
i'm currently thinking no
looks like att is offering free hbo max to some of its users like if you have their fiber line
@amber bramble water heater with wifi not worth the money.
Makes sense only if you have recirculation pump AND house is vacated for long periods of time
neither of which applies to me
Going tankless water heater? Highly recommend it! We switched from big ass water tank to gas powered tankless heating system, it is so efficient! Should have done that years ago!
Shit! Just noticed you get tax rebates on high efficiency models.
@last plaza yes a big rebate as well
thought about it but I think a tankless is out of our budget right now 😦
Check out Noritz
Best is to purchase the unit and get it installed.
@amber bramble do you have a circulation pump?
no
Then its not that expensive
