tawny radish
#

it should be better

proven pasture
#

faster yes... but not killing it...

#

95.3 and 92.3

#

link speed reported on phone was only 117 though

tawny radish
#

doesn't seem slow to me

proven pasture
#

not slow... all fine

#

what channel widths do you recommedn for a largeish home with 3 access points

#

20 / 40 / 80 ?

tawny radish
#

I typically use 40

proven pasture
#

currently on 80

#

i will change it to that

#

40 that is

tawny radish
#

you don't seem to be negotiating rates for 80 though

proven pasture
#

i think that's right

tawny radish
#

you need a lot of free spectrum to really get 80, depending on your environment it can be hard to do

proven pasture
#

k

tawny radish
#

40 is a lot easier... finding two contiguous channels at the same time that aren't trashed is pretty easy

proven pasture
#

do like the unifi gear, my mate needed an AP in his "shed"... i helped him set it up yesterday painful...

tawny radish
#

people seem to like it, that's for sure

proven pasture
#

@tawny radish so i have two 5ghz capable APs a lite (kitchen) and pro (landing) and one on the front of the house (old 2.4ghz only).

#

am just checking the setup in the controller...

#

2g is easy, they are set on channels 1,6 and 11 (low power)

#

i think that's a given

#

maybe i should change the 5g a bit... although it ain't broke !

#

haha, ABT, always be tinkering

#

power levels, channel widths and channel for 5g are the questions on 2x APs

tawny radish
#

looks fine

proven pasture
#

works good..

#

my mate in his shed was confused as hell by the POE aspect...

#

and then he didn't have a spare ethernet cable...

#

we eventually got it going, he provisioned by the android app (no controller)

#

i want him to buy a small POE switch, makes life so much easier

tawny radish
#

I'm off. Best of luck with it but I think you're in a reasonable spot.

clear ferry
#

Now try doing manual adjustments for 1400APs with quite a bit of overlap ;-)

proven pasture
#

all good, thanks for tips @tawny radish

#

@clear ferry good luck with that !

clear ferry
#

Already did it

Just installed my Xiaomi Air Purifier it is saying my AQI in my bedroom is between 0 and 1, feel like I might not have needed it 😅

ocean mirage
#

binary AQI

#

0 good 1 bad

rare condor
#

lol it goes to 3 or 4 in my garage, but yeah given AQI outside is around 5-10 I suppose its not bad enough here

ocean mirage
#

does this thing measure CO2?

hushed basalt
#

I wish I had NBN FTTP

ocean mirage
#

dont we all

hushed basalt
#

250/100 for $170/month

#

I'd pay that

ocean mirage
#

nice

#

100 up

#

shit yeah I'd pay that too

hushed basalt
#

Way more than its worth. But still

#

I get about 30 up atm

rare condor
#

@ocean mirage nah you want a eVOC/CO2 sensor for that, I have an AMS CCS811 and Sensirion CPG30 doing that

hushed basalt
#

But if I had 100 up I'd open plex up to a few more people

ocean mirage
#

Same telco, on both points

rare condor
#

I get 500 up at work

hushed basalt
#

Plus if I was still in the content industry that would be gold

#

500/500 would be better :D

rare condor
#

hushed basalt

:(

rare condor
#

Fastest down I did hit 1Gb

hushed basalt
#

We should just nationalise our network

ocean mirage
#

Yeah I'd rather have 100/250 than 250/100

rare condor
#

(download ubuntu ISO under 10 seconds)

#

@ocean mirage why for home?

ocean mirage
#

plex users and etc

hushed basalt
#

Pay Telstra the same as what they bought it for plus inflation. Minus their asset sales minus their neglect

#

So about 10% of what we sold it for

rare condor
#

I never got the whole plex users thing I never shared my account with anyone

hushed basalt

rare condor
#

Like its my media, everyone else can get screwed

hushed basalt
#

rare condor
#

Why would I want to waste my internet on randos

hushed basalt
#

Not randos

rare condor
#

Yeah its full of Family Photos

hushed basalt
#

Screw randos

rare condor
#

and Videos

ocean mirage
#

I mean two points

#
  1. Not randos
  2. I would share with randos if I had the means
hushed basalt
#

You just select the libraries you want to share

ocean mirage
#

Giving is nice

rare condor
#

Are you getting paid for this?

ocean mirage
#

No

hushed basalt
#

No

#

But it's human nature to share and collaborate :D

rare condor
#

Steal and hurt the poor Movie industry

ocean mirage
#

lol

rare condor
#

nah jks I am not one of those folks pirate away]

ocean mirage
#

Piracy is praxis

rare condor
#

All ripped movies

ocean mirage
#

I really may as well share, its no real effort of mine

hushed basalt
#

You just need the bandwidth

ocean mirage
#

yep

hushed basalt
#

There should be a soft ping function

ocean mirage
#

along with seeding torrents my uploads can get maxed easily enough

hushed basalt
#

Ping someone but doesn't notify them until they next open discord

ocean mirage
#

but my users are mainly old and dont care if I transcode to shitty resolutions lol

#

yeah like a here ping for specific people

hushed basalt
#

Especially with our global TZs

#

I haven't used torrents in over a decade

ocean mirage
#

usenet?

hushed basalt
#

Much better organised high quality content, and no nazi ratios to maintain

#

Yeah

#

Plus no seedbox or vpn needed

#

Trackers than forced ratios were dumb

ocean mirage
#

no seedbox or vpn needed with private trackers really but I do see the benefits

#

its just not worth the $ for me

#

private trackers are really organised and high quality anyway, and a little better for finding obscure things I believe

hushed basalt
#

Private trackers can still have DCMA actors on it

rare condor
#

I would never share as it has home videos of when I was 1-9 years old and my family as kids

ocean mirage
#

You'd just need to organise those into a different folder

hushed basalt
#

Yeah i have all of that too

#

You just share specific libraries not all

#

Movies and TVs are their own libraries

#

And videos and photos are other libraries not shared

ocean mirage
#

I even set up a request service thats never used lol

hushed basalt
#

My mum uses ombi a lot

#

Saves her texting me to add bla bla bla

ocean mirage
#

Mine doesn't do either, she feels bad asking for things

hushed basalt
#

:D

#

You can use imdb watchlists for movies

#

Not tv shows but thats how I do all of my movie selection

#

Radarr/sonarr are a pita to log into

ocean mirage
#

ah yeah

#

I normally just do them directly in radarr/sonarr, I dont mind

#

plus then I can manage profiles and which folder they go to

Wouldn't even want to think what that would cost

I have a friend in Venezuela and he is obsessed with Men At Work

@clear ferry 9s?

hushed basalt
#

@clear ferry what's the fastest speed someone can push bidirectionally down a single dark strand?

#

In production use, not theoretical lab experiments

#

Medium range. Say business district size.

clear ferry
#

@hushed basalt single? No idea tbh, that is telecom stuff, I've seen 10g, we do 100G on BiDi in switches atleast

hushed basalt
#

How many strands is that?

clear ferry
#

Two

#

Think you need 4 for 200

hushed basalt
#

So even if it was 40 for bidi single,

#

And that's obviously carrier grade stuff

clear ferry
#

Probably, single strand is it's own thing

hushed basalt
#

With a very lean 1:128 multiplex

#

Let's say 1:64

#

Actually I have no idea what ratio GPONs use

clear ferry
#

I prefer customers who buy two seperate two strands and run DWDM or cwdm on that, and get out 4-8 frequencies

hushed basalt
#

I'm just trying to see what the ceiling is with our current technology on fibre

#

Let alone what's possible 20, 40, 100 years from now

Time to make atxbyea our telecommunications minister

clever mortar

Because at the time it was the only choice, and I'm too cheap to spring for the other one 😉

fading zodiac
#

Why'd you pick a subcription?

clever mortar
#

I felt it was worth supporting them, given the amount of use I make of it (here and elsewhere)

Same reason I buy subs or similar for things like Plex and others

fading zodiac

fading zodiac

Why is that?

#

I hate it nowadays

#

I used to eat a Kroket there

clever mortar

I've flown through many airports where there's a really limited number of food choices, or they all fall into the same basic categories and there's not really choice

#

Nice to have options - boring eating at the same place/the same thing every time

molten osprey

so ... yaml ...

light trout
#

Just do this instead:

fading zodiac

I'd say

molten osprey

oh no ... now you're confusing me 🙂

fading zodiac

- Trigger: state
     platform:

molten osprey

BUT ... just out of interest, how would i then add the entity_id ? ... trigger: [{"platform": "state", "entity_id": "sensor.this" }] ?

fading zodiac
#

Yes

light trout
#

or

#
trigger: [{"platform": "state", "entity_id": ["sensor.this"] }]
molten osprey
#

but then .... what about .... for: minutes: 10

fading zodiac
#

What are you trying to achieve?

molten osprey
#

Knowledge.

light trout
#
trigger: [{"platform": "state", "entity_id": ["sensor.this"], "for": {"minutes": 10} }]
molten osprey
#

ah yes of course

#

@fading zodiac wasnt trying to achieve anything, just trying to follow how this alternative notation would work

fading zodiac
#

Oh okay

light trout
#

At one point I had all my config like that

molten osprey
#

whats funny is that i used to run a team of about 150 developers and testers, and one of the things they used a lot were YAML configuration files.

#

but i had never used those myself. only when i got into HA, did i start using them.

light trout
#

Now you know why they complained so much 😉

molten osprey
#

Yep 🙂

#

although perl might have had something to do with that too 🙂

light trout

That's probably a safe assumption 🤣

molten osprey

😉

#

so i might be switching to a fiber connection soon

#

I'm assuming you're in NL, given you guessed I was on KPN i'm assuming based on my name?

fading zodiac
#

No

#

The huawei part

#

I know KPN uses huawei/zte

molten osprey
#

ah ok

fading zodiac
#

What would your name have to do with it?

molten osprey
#

It's a very Dutch name ... Dutch people would recognise it as Dutch 🙂

fading zodiac
#

That's why i assumed you were in NL 😉

#

but what would it have to do with KPN ?

molten osprey
#

well, if you had figured I was Dutch, then KPN as a provider would have been a sensible guess as it's the biggest in the country at a guess

#

(that is a guess, i've been away a while)

we have an above ground pool one and i cant imagine hwo much more expensive it would be to have an in ground one thats larger

dusk lodge

guess I'll need WS2815?

forest edge
#

@shy comet just more chemicals to the mix ect but the pumps and what not are relatively the same cost wise

shy comet
#

im talking more about the electric bill with the filter

#

larger pool is gonna require more time with the filter on

forest edge
#

I dunno, i always thought that was just time based

shy comet
#

yea it also depends on how much they charge for u electricity and how much uve used....in LA the prices keep going up

dusk lodge
#

people who have pools weird me out

#

American houses are weird anyway

forest edge
#

weird in what way?

#

@shy comet i don't think electric cost would be that much different between size of pools unless you were comparing an Olympic pool or something. The only real difference between the option of allowing the pool to automatically circulate various times of the day which is optional and something I think abovve ground pool owners don't generally do

shy comet
#

@forest edge for pools you go by how much water the pool can handle. Mine is about 7k gallons and according to intex i only need to run it for 4 hours a day...Intex sells above ground pools that require 10 hours a day

#

then tack on heated pool for those owners too which i have heard some can take hours to heat up

#

me personally i use solar cover lol

forest edge
#

heat is a diffrent ballgame

#

I have a hot tub lol

shy comet
#

haha yea

#

i also went hte salt water route which has a more expensive filter but easier maintenance

#

i didnt want to mess with chemicals and such....adding bags of salt as needed is easier lol

forest edge
#

interesting

#

I don't know anywhere around here with a saltwater swimming pool

#

pool chemicals do suck tho

#

dealing with ph levels and bromine on the hot tub is a major pain

shy comet
#

yea for me when we start up the pool i add 160lbs of salt

#

then wehn the system gives me teh low salt error i add 1 40lb bag

forest edge
#

lol suprised you hadn't HA automated that task

shy comet
#

lol the only automatoin i have for the pool so far is to notify me when the plug needs teh reset button clicked lol

shy comet

and i agree our sewage is nuts man

#

i had to dispute them a few times and won

forest edge

many places tack on additional chargers to account of additional storm run off

Sewage is a percentage of water use. So pool and irrigation is calculated as sewage as well. Just freaking dumb.

forest edge

nothing can be done about that either

always higher during spring

tidal bronze

They let you add second meter.

forest edge

here there is no meter

shy comet
#

@tidal bronze minor correction.....winter water usage 😛

tidal bronze

Lawn drives me nuts man.

shy comet

yea

#

we had a leak when we first moved in and didnt know it was there

our sewage was like almost 300 a month or something like that

tidal bronze

Wtf

shy comet

so i had to prepare a $30 gardenere bill to repair the busted line

got like $2k in credit

tidal bronze

you guys have actual sewage meters? or you just refering to your water meter?

Percentage of water meter

forest edge

oh ok

lol

was like wtf

tidal bronze

Lol.

#

But its just not right. 70% of my usage is lawn. Nothing to do with sewage

#

Waiting for my permit to come in for second meter.

shy comet
#

if you dont use water during dec/jan you can essential zero it out lol

#

they only calculate it during 1 bill in the winter

tidal bronze
#

I still have winter usage. Dogs jump in out the pool. So thats a crazy amount.

shy comet
#

haha

tidal bronze
#

2nd meter $800 installed. Money back in 7 months.

shy comet
#

wow

tidal bronze
#

I calculated like $40 or $60 actual sewage usage.

forest edge
#

But its just not right. 70% of my usage is lawn. Nothing to do with sewage
@tidal bronze for just 25 cents a day Dlamini could learn to read and write and have fresh water to drink from.

#

I don't get how a second meter would fix the issue if they are just using a formula based off your normal water use

tidal bronze
#

No formula after 2nd meter. 2 readings. Seweage charged only on house meter

forest edge
#

and they will go through that trouble to read and account for the second meter?

tidal bronze
#

Yes

forest edge
#

wow, you got some nice city hall people lol

now they can sit on thier ass and overcharge me without evver getting up out of the seat

forest edge

hmm gotta buy it through them and You may be required to periodically calibrate the private sub-meter per manufacturer's specifications and recommendations and send the results to the City. they have a means of disputing your claim lol

tidal bronze
#

@dusk lodge what are you exactly planning to do?

forest edge
#

use the pc moterboard to control a set of leds in a pc case

#

is my guess

dusk lodge
#

^

tidal bronze
#

ok?1

forest edge
#

you don't need a seperate controller for that

#

you just need the software to control the outputs of those pins

dull chasm
#

put a garden by tail pipe and you good to go 🤣

dusk lodge
#

So just the LED strip is fine

#

I assume it has some sort of "ends" that can plug into those 4 pins, i.e. I don't need a power supply for it as it'll get 12V from the board

forest edge
#

@dull chasm the pipe was concealed I can only assume the "run off" snaked it's way to the road or something, but heck that was every bit of a few thousand feet away. OR some county asshat was trespassing and stepped into some doodoo

#

@dusk lodge they make pc led strips that would just plug into that. probably be wise to look those up cause they would be made to handle the power vs amount of leds on one strip ratio

dull chasm
#

yep but cow shits in field and perfectly ok .... for now 😂

not sure what to make of all of that

Though it's been a while so maybe my memory is different from reality

green inlet

hushed basalt
