someone is ๐ข with envvy
I need to stop reading the posts for major announcements. eesh
Lol they should probably lock the comments
Hey guys, finally making my entry into home automation after years of putting it off :)
Just starting simple with a few Philips Hue bulbs and a raspberry pi but if all goes well and my budget allows I'll hopefully be adding devices in as I go.
Originally I'd planned on using the Hue Bridge and communicating with that over the local network and API however I've just stumbled onto Home Assistant and this looks much more flexible and fun. If I understand correctly Home Assistant on a pi or dedicated server is able to be a complete replacement for the Hue Bridge so I might end up re-selling the bridge to fund another device if all goes well
no, that is not the case
the hue bridge has an antenna for the specific frequency and communication protocol (zigbee) that is used to "talk" and "listen" to the hue bulbs
there are other "hubs" that can replace it that home assistant will communicate with
I was just about to ask whether I would need a zigbee usb adapter to allow the server to replace the bridge? or is it still not equivalent
that can be equivalent (probably, I don't use zigbee)
#zigbee-archived
ah i see. point taken ๐ alright looks like I have some more investigating to do
Suddenly snow
suddenly? I thought snow was the norm
We haven't had snow since December
Global Warming
Given that we've used hogsheads to measure drinks, and that the type of drink results in different volumes, I feel that we've no legs to stand on (particularly after drinking a hogshead of beer)
This is probably a stupid question, but my sdcard is running out of space. Can I make an image and write it on an different sdcard, will I be able to use the free space on the larger sdcard?
Depends on your OS
Raspbian
There's tools built in for that ๐
Thanks, raspi-config?
@light trout "https://fleet.linuxserver.io/ (even though I personally do not like how they do container) have a good amount, for the rest go to " Care to share some more insight to what you dont like on how they do container?
Morning, how is the design rant so far?
interesting
Lucky venver :p
They pack to much in them to make them similar to eachother, which is great for the normal user, but not that great for preformance and troubleshooting, most of what they offer allready exsist as containers from the folks that makes the software that the container runs
Get it, thanks for sharing
@hearty depot venv 4 lyfe, don't call a jail a chroot again you pleb

I maintain a "fleet" of containers my self, making them similar is also great for the maintainer of the contianer, so I get why they do it
like FROM SCRATCH ?
SCRATCH gives you nothing
I read that in the bsd handbook some time ago :P let's see if I find the line again. @clear ferry
I've built many containers, it's actually relatively simple
it give you something, but mostly nothing https://hub.docker.com/_/scratch
@hearty depot bsd for repressed housewives ?
https://github.com/ludeeus/container/blob/master/instructions/Containers/elastic-ek.yaml is how I build containers now, can't be like everyone else ๐
Being average is no fun
I got my backdoor camera set to 3% threshold for detecting movement and it will trip with flying insect but for whatever reason it cannot see a damn possum walking around in the smack dab middle of the camera view at night
even if it's cause they are greysih black, the damn eyeballs light up like flashlights when it looks at the ir lights lol
My doods is only 20% sure I'm a person
Switch away from tflite ๐
@clear ferry well to be fair everyone else thinks that too
I would hate to try and deal with an ai on my cameras
@clever mortar pretty sure my CPU doesn't support anything else doods has
Mine doesn't either, but full tensorflow still takes an average of 0.8 seconds on a 4 MP image

@clear ferry
https://www.freebsd.org/doc/handbook/jails.html
Jails build upon the chroot(2) concept
...
Jails improve on the concept of the traditional chroot environment in several ways
...
Interesting, wonder when that was written, because imo it is no longer the case
looks like starting 2017
https://web.archive.org/web/20170114102714/https://www.freebsd.org/doc/handbook/jails.html

Fuuuck... Loosing supirvised hurts me a lot.
All the things I have to migrate to docker or generic installs
You don't have to move... until things break anyway ๐
All those things are easy to move anyway
Docker is scarily easy
Can you extract the .conf files from add-ons btw?
things break anyway ๐
If so it would probably be ridiculously easy
Should be do-able, may just take a little work with the docker command
slap ESXi on your server, run a HAOS VM for the stuff you use under the supervised install today, and add a debian VM for the rest
Don't listen to him, he is trying to tempt you to the dark side
ESXI dosnt support my network card
Get a better network card
I have a few, give me your address
with ESXi 7, there are native? docker support so you should not need the debian VM
I ll realy do ๐
@light trout k8s, but requires nsx, hence licensed and knowledge
Well F them then!
Sure, you've looked at the regularly posted lists in the #zigbee-archived channel?
If it is regular pcie slots you have I have some hp 331t you can have @hearty depot
4 port
no-no ๐
Would love to
No wait, they are 364T
Probably
So intel chips
Send me your address and I'll send a card, if it will fit in your server
Proxmox supports all network cards ๐
Proxmox is for plebs
Still, works well... ๐
I've been compromised since forever ๐
As long as it's good enough, that's all I need ๐
hmmm... sounds like you work in IT
I love my macbook
ptf... I'm part time operations technician and the other part I do customer service, no development for me ๐
Mac ... yeah, no
Not even with cheese?
Sure, with some mustard, paprika, a touch of cayenne, some garlic...
Maybe even some diced bacon ๐คค
Bacon โค๏ธ

But like most things, its probably something I wouldn't do in other countries than Norway
Because people elsewhere have dirty food
Ah, the US knows how to solve that, just wash it in chlorine...
For some reason, I don't even doubt that is true
Wtf
We used to have small amounts of antibiotics in chicken feed, but that ended a few years ago
Yup
huh!?!?! no more?
Then ther is no reason any more to eat it
All beef from now
Raw beef ๐คค
get out
most americans dont live that way......prolly 50% like me buy fresh chickens and meat from the slaughter house locally and they source direct from pastures
yea the city slickers are the ones that buy meat and chickens that are raised by commerical farms
Probably 3% buy fresh chickens here, the commercial stuff is so good there is basically no difference
We buy most of our meat from the local butchers, because then we know where it came from (quite literally, they can tell you which farm things came from)
And in those 3% are restaurants
We have so few butchers, I know of 5 perhaps, and 3 of those are halal butchers
yea if we buy that property ....it has a 500 acre cattle ranch on the back side
So many good plugins to freenas now, installing esphome and tasmoadmin, and killing the dockers
We've got two butchers locally, as in within a couple of miles
same here ...well more like 15 or 20 but land is much more spread out than there ... i have no neighboors in two directions for miles
Only time I actually buy from butchers is for Christmas, or if I'm by chance close to one and want to barbeque
@light trout Extending on from your comment regarding not using HASS, what motivates you to contribute to the project? I find that really interesting.
One of the more prolific add-on devs didn't use HA themselves for a long time
Some folks just like watching things burn writing code
I learn a lot, I like building things, and generally like helping others solve issues (even though I generally do not like folks) ๐
Spoken like a true developer!
In my local front end developer slack channel
They all froth the macs
Front end and design have always been that way
But even 60% of the backend/systems devs I've seen use 13" MBPs
They were talking about if going from 16 to 32GB was worth the ยฃ500
Rofl
Not bad for MAC Pricing
ยฃ500 for 16GB in a machine that thermal throttles ๐คข
Mac Pricing = 2.5x Normal Prices
That's like $2000 AUD for 32GB
Then add some overheads
Yeah, I have two customers who are Mac shops, they have probably 400 adapters laying around at any time, and whenever a new iPhone is released the Devs rush to IT to order them
I don't condone bullying
But some people deserve it
I'm so glad my laptop has a real usb A port and usb C
I'm holding on the my XPS 13 9350 for that reason
Like onsite all PLCs are using type A have an adapter for this would be annoying
It gets even worse
Honestly at some point you're better of getting a desktop for the heavy work and just a Ultrabook for portability
I'm not very productive without real monitors at proper height and keyboard and mouse anyways
Remote VM?
Only reason I have the laptop I have with 48GB ram is to run a bunch of vms in workshops on dark sites
Yeah but you're an outlier
Really?
You're not a dev working in his home office

And because... why not having 48 gb ๐
YoU aRe nOt lIke oNe oF uS
When I am 200 meters in the air connecting a BNC connector with one hand and holding a PLC under my arm an ultrabook makes way more sense
Yeah but are you trying to run 12 hour h265 renders continuously in the background while running ML training in the foreground
Like some guys bring gaming laptops with super specs and then can't suppot rigging
I run 9 VMs at work
always
I eat RAM
On your laptop?
yes
I have to run the SCADA VM, the ROCKwell VM, the connector VM etc
I have to simulate the entire plant
I just have a tennant with 10 cores and 64 GB Ram and a public ip to use - my poor thinkpad cant handle this stuff
I need to test the iGPU on my surface laptop
I barrrrrely game
I should get a nvme drive for my desktop too
I'm running a samsung pro ssd on it from 5 years ago
It's very good but it's not nvme
Plus 256GB is a bit tight nowadays
Argh I just realised why my alarm hasn't been turning itself on automatically. Guest mode was on somehow. I'll need to set an alert for that
I realy like creately.com
Only downside is that it is in the cloud
I just had my mind blown when I realised that Discord has a search function which will search the entire chat history of a channel........
Not just a channel
the search is actually pretty powerful and easy to use
Which reminds me of the Windows search function which is the exact opposite of that
Search function in Microsoft teams is pretty good too
@clear ferry ok so it's weird. I had the version of the app with the back button issue, then a different version with the back button like it was before (but the channel list looked different), and now I'm back again to the version with the back button issue
Wtf

What do you use the back button for
Heretic
Just installed home assistant in docker - and couldn't find the camrea inegration.... I know it exists from looking up the integration... but it's not in the list of integrations to add
that led me down the rabbit hole of docker vs image, hass.io vs... supervised, I guess?
Main question, am I losing anything by doing the docker route, or is it just more work? I assume I put a 'camera:' line in config.yaml to 'enable' the integration, but I also realize I don't get the add-on store this way?
the stuff I read about doing one vs the other didn't really give me a clear picture as to whether one is 'better' or 'more complete' than the other
You losing nothing
I have updated for home assistant core and operating system. Does it matter which order I do them in ?
#330944238910963714 @sage timber
If you want integrations @reef abyss you need #330944238910963714 otherwise you can just install software in Docker containers (aka #672217570283094017 )
Allrighty then, thanks!
The images are Hass.io/#330944238910963714
I didn't wanna do it on a pi cuz I have a libvirt server to give it some horsepower
i tried messing with libvirt/qemu, but disk allocation was too slow i gave up... trying to allocate 300gb took too long, after 5 hours i gave up... went back to virtual box and had my VM up and installing windows in about 5 minutes
also really hated the disk pool concept
I have HA running on a RPi - I'm trying to find a way where I can adjust network parameters on the host - not the container. How do I get access to the actual host?
#672217570283094017 @young adder
Unless #330944238910963714
actually, sounds like you might be running #330944238910963714?
otherwise you'd probably already know that answer ๐
lol hey it's a 50/50 shot... how are ya @wet pilot
I'm pretty sure it's using supervised
Hanging on. You?
yeah, try re-asking in there, those folks would have a better idea on how to approach it
ehhhh rollercoaster
had some really good days day trading... then had a really bad day :S .... also, really hating my neighbors
but i'm still breathing and healthy, so complaining is futile
Lol I'm pretty pissed at one of my neighbors right now too. Managed to cut my fiber line
oh my fiber is garbage and ATT won't do shit about it
i had to have 8 techs out to redo the run for it to finally not go down every 10 minutes
Yup, was cut end of April. They still haven't fixed it
i hope you cut payment as well!
i got 6mo of payment back, and my bill went from 100/mo to 10/mo for the next 9mo
I'm about to. Gonna abuse spectrum's 30 day money back guarantee
but i'm still only getting 100mbit upload when i should be hitting 1gbit
i let the regional manager fucking have it... he never met a Karen like me before
i also filed an FCC complaint daily for 3 weeks straight
They wouldn't let me go that high
im attempting to put together an affordable home automation package. . . can anyone recommend reliable hardware as far as the main controller (pi 4?) and reliable water sensors
#hardware-archived can certainly help @flint pecan
if you have a technology in mind, see the apropos channels
im actually searching for the proper way to go. . . i have my own HA installation in a docker inside of OMV installation on my NAS
@flint pecan pi and reliable isn't something I would use in the same sentence
you looking to do DIY Cpt?
cuz there's #diy-archived, too
lots of smart folks, just take a stab somewhere ๐
i have a networking company that services homes/small business
I think the argument there is that Pi's just have a tendency to go kaput over time, or the sd-card itself... eventually it turns into a headache
trying to put together a package i can sell relatively cheap to people wanting to break into automation. . . was just looking for the best setup
docker or vm is fine for me, but most would-be customers dont already have a pc thats always on
i mean, it's all subjective, but best would be a NUC with NVME, 8gb RAM would suffice...
but you're going to pay heavily for that footprint and power combo
i personally went with an optiplex sff and slapped 32gb and a few SSDs in it
but if you're looking for clientele i'd probably try to find a nice small form factor like the NUC...
ODROID-N2 gets good feedback
i think i saw someone get a "Mini PC"
Looks to be not much more cost than a Pi, but a lot more robust
but i will never touch a celeron processor unless i'm paid handsomly
lol
truthfully nuc's are way overpowered for HA by itself
i think i saw someone get a "Mini PC"
@steel urchin that might be me, just ordered one yesterday
I don't even break using 1GB on my rpi4
Absolutely they are, but you'd get a lot more longevity out of it
There's a reason they exist ๐
i looked at some mini's but all i see is seleron or the x5 processor that is ranked lower than celeron
This is what I ordered, seemed like a decent deal: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07T5DTNPS/ref=cm_sw_r_other_apa_i_67STEbG888R4Q
I like that it takes an SSD/HDD
Not expecting blazing performance but wanted a step up from the pi
if the rpi had a emmc slot it would be hands down the best "fitting" devvice for HA
Except for performance
@steel urchin I already have the libvirt host set up, I run other stuff on it
well that depends on what "addons" extras you use with it
for HA by itself it's more than enough
although I tried downloading the qcow2 image and importing it but I got 'no bootable drive'. so I dunno what was going on there
I'l just stick with my docker setup for now
the host and pools were simple to set up @reef abyss ... my complaint was the performance was abysmal
at 5ish hours it still had 10 more to go
.... to do what?
so i created a vbox vm and allocated the full 300gb disk and was installing windows within 5 minutes
allocate a 300gb disk... like i said earlier
ah
i tried qcow2 and raw.... i'd rather eat a bowl of glass than to wait that long
it imported right away for me, but it didn't work, so I dunno if I did it wrong or what
lol i like how that mini pc says "TDP unlocker" .... all they did was add a fan to the unit ๐คฃ
"We unlock all the TDPs"
T D P U N L O C K E R
love how the sticker on those say "Intel Inspired" instead of "Intel Inside"
Is there a lovelace channel here?

hi guys I am having some problems with home assistant on a raspberry pi 3b
it seems since version 107 my pi is overheating and crashing and i have been upgrading to 109 and the problems keep on happening
runs fine for a couple of hours at around 50c and then all of a sudden without doing anything it goes up to 80c and crashes it has a heatsink installed
@hearty depot unfortunately there is no support for using that with the rpi4 but it can be used with an rpi3
So I've got a Monoprice 6-zone amp. I want to play Spotify. What sort of device should I get to play Spotify out to that amp? The amp is in my data closet so I can't use a normal desktop. I have a Dell r730 rackmount server, but it doesn't have audio out. Can I do it with a Raspberry Pi?
@tropic hedge more than likely
it's not looking like there's a Spotify client for Raspberry Pis. I think I might have to go with a USB sound adapter and run Spotify in a VM on my server
this is inapplicable to you? https://blog.turboturbo.net/2019/04/02/spotipi-spotify-connect-on-a-raspberry-pi/

Ah!
Ohio weather was 32 ish degrees this weekend. More like crappy weather. Next week onwards it is going to 80 and even 83.
well it is still may
Usually May 15 is the tipping point. Thatโs when the weather changes. Thatโs why we plant after May 15
I have to go to work starting May 18.
lol tipping point.. from too cold to too friggin hot
Yup. Always extremes
I donโt know how going to work will feel after WFH for 8 weeks.
No doubt
Except not everyone is going to be there. Only 30% folks are going back. Rest will follow slowly, not sure when.
America is getting back to businesses slowly.

I havenโt had haircut in 2 months. I wonโt be going for a haircut anytime soon. They are not open yet.
It will be very different for sure!
shave your head, save you some $$
I tried to cut my hair this morning, messed up a couple of spots and stopped. Not easy I must say.
That would be a great invention to create one that trims your hair based on a pic you select from the list. ๐
I found a scofflaw barber that came to my house and cut my hair. Best $40 ever
Need a suck-n-cut
he would have charged me a lot more for the suck part
well my debian system apparently doesn't like the nvidia driver, so i'm stuck using nouveau
well, maybe NEXT year will be the year of the linux desktop 8(
out of nowhere resuming from suspend would result in a black screen with a blinking cursor, and the only way to get it to go to the login screen was to go to a different tty and back to tty1
although my life revolves around them and all, aren't computers just exhausting sometimes?
yup
i think it's because i saw nvidia-persistenced.service won't start in the logs with no clear indication why it won't start. enabling it and starting it manually didn't help
I'm so glad I ran ATI for all years I ran Linux
Heck I bought my first ATI all in wonder in 1996 or something, only Nvidia I ever owned was the tnt2
tnt2 was pretty epic
i am trying to think the first nvidia i had
maybe riva?
i think i had like vesa before that
what were those cheap ass non-3d - 2d cards before integrated became a thing?
was it vesa?
I had Tandy atleast, which was pink tinted
since you had to have a graphics card since integrated wasnt a thing yet
oh hell yeah my first computer was a tandy 1000RL
well first like offical one bought a store, my dad had brought home some commodores and shit like that from peoples trash before that lol
my tandy 1000RL was a POS and it made me better at tech because as a little kid while friends had good pc that played latest games i had shit one that couldnt because it didnt support EGA (which was needed at the time) and it had 512kb of ram while everything needed 640K so i couldnt run games and instead tinkered trying to get them working. sometimes i wonder if i would be as profecient as i am today if my pc could justp lay those games lmao
if the games just worked maybe i would have just rotted my mind playing them like my friends, those friends were never good with computers
it was funny too because i saved like birthday and chrisrmas to spend hundreds on a 256KB RAM upgrade chip to finally have 640KB and then all the games needed 1MB of ram lol
and VGA
i think maybe i got a EGA card i dont remember
no nevermind that 1000RL didnt have the ability to add graphics card
actually i guess integrated graphics has been around longer than i thought
I'm probably the most proficient of all my friends with technology and computers, and I played a hella lot more games than them, but I also built my own when I was 12 and troubleshooted computers and electronics since I could talk
i had some XT's along the way too, more garbage picks by my dad he worked in a super rich area next to a major tech company so people threw out all sorts of good expensive tech that needed very easy minor erepairs
well you couldnt have been playing games with all your spare time if you were building them and doing the other stuff
my friends spent all their free time gaming, i still gamed of course but just not as much
I played a lot, I was just terrible at it mostly
same lmao
i used to get trashed in quake3d
but it was fun to run it over like SLIP in the early days
i remmeber i had a dual SLIP dial up connection, i think it was called a shotgun connection b y the ISP where i would dial up 2 modems with SLIP (from Linux) at maybe 14.4 or 28.8 and it was epic at the time speed wise
PPP became the standard shortly after

Nice, the deCONZ discord got linked on the git repo
is there a help channel? I'm having problems reaching HA (or maybe it is not turning on at all)
Not sure which install you're using? If you have add-ons, or see references to either Hass.io or Supervisor, then you're using #330944238910963714. If you're running natively in Docker or in a venv then you have the #672217570283094017 install method

What would a pool cost?
I looked into a pool in the US. Minimum 30k here. We have a community pool. More fun and less maintenance if you ask me.
The thing i remember
when i was in italy on holiday
We had our vila with own pool
Every day you wanted to swim, you gotta clean it.
because damn bugs went to a swim and drown.
Yeah a lot can be automated but it costs $$$
I find pool covers are a necessity but they're very tacky and winding them up and back out ruins the spontaneity of just jumping in for a dip
you can always make a cheapo solar heater with a few hundred feet of black garden hose in the sun hooked to the pool pump
Or throw the toaster in.
@hushed basalt I worked with it a bit a long time ago with a company I used to work for
I guess they wouldn't of had fargate back then
nah
From my understanding with pretty much everything cloud, managed services are great when you're small to medium scale
and large to behemoth scale is where it can be worthwhile doing it yourself
or evaluating it at least
Guys, I'm gonna build the house in the next year or two, I want to include as much as I can in terms of electrical installation and planned appliances to support HA. This is one and only chance to prepare the house for future automation projects. I'm new to all this though I'm an IT Engineer so I think I won't have much trouble with understanding this rabbit hole. Do you have any tips for places where I can start reading about good practices?

@mossy venture Depends on how you installed it... ๐
Touch screen I suppose Wombo1? Tablets are likely to be cheaper than any other option
yeah I was thinking just a simple tablet, but they often dont look very slick
@clever mortar AS an add on
Then see #add-ons-archived
It will be harder to find a slick looking touch screen than a tablet I feel
yeah thats what ive been finding, I found a few on Alibaba and things but nothing that looks super professional
3d print or woodwork a frame
Then it's just a screen and you can hide the cable entry too

If you're in the EU Wombo1, the Geizhals search is pretty good for stuff like this: https://geizhals.eu/?cat=montouch
I think lenovo tabs are my best bet for Australia
they're still a little slower than i would like though.. but hard to beat the price
I am Australian, living in Moscow, but buying for my house in Thailand...

I'll still have physical light switches. But tablets are good for secondary controls like HVAC, doorbell screenshots etc
Moscow is sort of like EU, but totally different!!!!
Although I'd like to see what room-assistant will be like
@hushed basalt yeah exactly my thinking. putting SONOFF in the switch controls, but having a couple of these in the house for secondary controls and things
Raspberry Pi Zero W are like $21 and here and raspberry pi 3 A is like $38
I think I'll just put model Bs in the rooms for roomassistant and GPIOs with POE.
I already have 2 rpi3s so that will help
And some rpis 2
Wombo I'd look into whatever tablets you can buy in store that are cheap and look half decent screen quality
And are easily rootable
Then get some 180 degree usb cables and some 5v adapters in wall boxes
The problem is that the price seems to scale with the screen quality
that's pretty neat
But to be honest you don't need much for a lovelace UI
No, not so much. In some uses the brightness could be an issue though
haha, true
Every problem is an automation waiting to happen
yeah brightness, burn-in, auto-brightness based on background light, need to look good for wife
You could use illumination sensors in either the rooted tablet or externally to adjust brightness too
Plus they can work as night lights
When prescence detected in hallway make screen turn on low brightness with red light etc
I am thinking 3 of them. inside front door, kitchen, upstairs passage
I'd love to have a voice assistant with a touch screen in the kitchen. Thinkin about one of those Google ones but haven't gotten one yet
I wall mounted a google home mini in the kitchen
We use that one the most
To be honest I'm not a fan of anything on kitchen counters. But YMMV
I have a speaker in the kitchen but having a screen would be nice too. Showing the timers (instead of asking) as well as recipes would be useful
and having the lovelace ui available would be an added bonus
Indeed
I'd consider an ordinary tablet on a wall mount too
One that you can take the tablet off easily
Not good for "music" though. But a better omni device
I don't know if you can watch netflix etc on those google things
I find it good to watch background TV during meal prep but i can tilt my tv to the kitchen
Yeah the speaker I have in the kitchen right now doubles as a multiroom speaker (and can handle sauna heat too), so I'd want to replace that functionality as well. But the choices were a bit limited last I checked
Geizhals is really good!!! I found this one that looks to fit
From shelf advertising to wayfinding, this ultra-clear Multi-Touch Smart Display is ideal when space is at a premium. A versatile all-in-one solution, content is easy to manage remotely. Power-over-Ethernet enables flexible placement
POE, 10", touchscreen, android
What's the price
320 euro though..
Yeah haha
its meant for signage so it shouldnt have burn-in problems
Happy Bitcoin Halving!
can ysomeone tell me how to install the esphome addon on hassos?
can not find in supervisor and can not add a repo

See, that ๐

I found a few more that area really focused on the digital signage market; now just need to find them cheap and purchaseable in small units
(It seems all the rage in China at the moment in the digital signage world...are those that come with soap dispensers)
so with my move to ipv6 i was reading a bit more on the syntax and i enjoy the fact that because of the rules involving zeros the loopback address is ::1
yup
Without writing the whole shebang
2001::45be::2ce even ๐
lol

there it is
@clear ferry actually i think it would have to be 2001::45be:0:0:2ce
because the number of octets between each section would be unknown
(assuming the full address is 2001:0000:0000:0000:45be:0000:0000:02ce)
What have you done @scenic radish
nightmare fuel
heh
@clear ferry black mirror, but with shotgun chasing horse dogs
just had a scammer call me on my junk line with what was obviously going to turn into an advance fee scam
apparently my electric company overcharged me for my last bill! but it's ok though, they'll refund me and can offer me a 30% discount on service
told them my name is Jack Ryan and gave them a bogus account number when they asked for it
OOPS WE SENT TOO MUCH MONEY!
then the line went silent. the call didn't end but i was bummed i wasn't able to waste more of their time
Lmao

so yaml is on the way out for a lot of things, right? i moved my zones from configuration.yaml and used the UI to set them up. that's all fine, but I want the map to always show the Home location. where is the new place for this setting?
@clever mortar @wet pilot (and someone else) point of clarification from an eternity ago, my docker stuff is at /var/lib/docker. i thought we were talking about where we store docker-compose files which, once i set up my new server, i'll probably move from ~/docker to /etc/docker or something
so hopefully this makes me less of a heretic now
@scenic radish find an answer to your bootup issue?
yeah, i think my computer doesn't like the nvidia driver anymore
lol
no clue why. i went back to nouveau
kind of annoying, but whatever. i can't be bothered at this point to figure out why it stopped working
nouveau is fine, i don't do anything graphics-intensive anyway
it was only after putting the machine to sleep and then resuming. booting was fine.
lol windows as daily driver would cure those issues
how can I monitor a refrigerator to know when it loses power?
smelling the milk?
Smart plug with power monitoring would be my go-to, but #hardware-archived may be a good place to ask
but that might be hard without any power ๐
problem with a smartplug is if it loses power HA isn't going to get an update from it with 0 watts in use
Yeah, but you'll stop getting updates from it at all ๐
You could use that to generate an alert too
yeah, if the state changes to unavailable, then send a notification
@clever mortar I have it on a Wemo but no notification when power fails. Plus when power returns it fails open/off
Then off to #hardware-archived and ask over there ๐
small UPS with a pi zero monitoring it and the NUT component could alert you when that circuit loses power too
@clever mortar ok, thx
would think internal temp would be a better alert than power
I have a temp sensor in my meat freezer
lol I just pictured a wooden box with snow around it lol

any tips for migrating to a new server? at this point i'm just making a note of everything i have installed and the config files i want to copy over
Migrating what?
- Back it all up
- Copy it all over
- Release three weeks later you missed something
Because it rulz
Actually, when I installed pfsense on my mini pc the image always froze on the first install screen on hdmi, but on VGA it worked flawlessly
Probably some firmware backwards compatibility
i'm gonna do a fresh install of debian on the new server, and because i don't have tons of things installed i was thinking of just reinstalling everything on the new server and copying the config files over. am i thinking the wrong way here?
Whatever works , works
Just scp -r /probably/not/pictures/of/my/junk teddi@192.168.1.222:/backup/of/my/junk

cool, this shouldn't be too bad
no more pi@raspberrypi for me
might use the integrated eMMC as part of my backup routine
watch you'll go through all this and find the mini pc is slower lol
Anyone played Fractured, But Whole game?
southpark? Yeah, it was fun
@forest edge ehh i doubt it. if nothing else it'll be nice to move away from ARM architecture
well, free returns then
Arm is so yesteryear
and i'll actually be using a 64-bit OS
Openrisc please
should i be concerned about the 1600MHz RAM?
Yes, your FPS will be terrible in crysis
๐ฑ

for real tho
i super need a haircut
Silly question, if I put a motion sensor looking at my door, can I know when there are people inside and when it's empty?
Like, does it distinguish between coming inside and leaving?
Most (all?) aren't going to know on their own what direction you're going
Yeah, makes sense
and if it's on the other side of glass, it can't see shit on the other side of the glass if it's IR
pair of trip sensors would know direction
so you can't use it to look at people through a window or whatnot

Hi, I'm brand new to HA, i've been playing around with it for the last few days. I managed to get my philips hue lights to work, got all my KASA switches sorted. I also added my kodi and emby players by following the documentation online. Now i'm trying to setup my Netgear R6700v2 router. They advise the same procedure as for kodi/emby. But so far i have no luck adding the router. Any idea why it's not showing up? I added my login, pwd, host ip, port

sudo apt install crazy
sudo apt remove --purge Underknowledge
sudo: apt: command not found
sudo sudo apt remove --purge Underknowledge
sudo: apt: command not found
pkg: warning: ignoring request to remove underknowledge which isn't installed
oh oh..
My favorite is when I try to cd to a directory like lost+found when not logged in as root
cd: command not found
Well I'm fucked if cd isn't found
youre fine when pyton or vim is reachable
both can pop a shell and you could elevate priviliges
Oh I was just joking like the command actually isn't available on the system
guess I'm stuck at home forever
Wait. I actually am IRL.
well... that was'nt the best idea ```bash

can I somehow convince git to treat symlinks as folders?
cp teddisjunk ..
@hearty depot no
it MIGHT follow hard links though
I've never tried
but it kinda goes against the purpose of both git and links
the whole thing becaue /etc/grub2.cfg is actually /boot/grub2/grub.cfg
It's a well known fact that unix is very user friendly.
It's just picky about who it makes friends with.
are you saying you want to back up the symlink itself or what the symlink points to?
best would be a folder where all directorys are in wich I want to keep track of
Ofcause with all folders where the symlink points to.
When I backup the symlink git stores it as file with the path
nah, no way to do that
HP ๐คข

@scenic radish meanwhile in norway...
Whoa, Mi!
@last dirge Bindmounts!

I should do this
@hushed basalt don't you use 50Hz electricity?
Yes?
was watching a video showing someone in AUS with a solar setup and they were talking about their inverter
I forgot the frequency was different
I got a package sitting in NY, and one in IL for 2+ weeks now... USPS not even updating the current stats now! Tired of tracking those packages!

Anyone who still has a Nexus 7 2013: is your screen noticably warmer in the upper right corner? If it is and you didn't notice until I mentioned it, I'm sorry.
@scenic radish uh no, i got rid of my rotary dial phone several years ago

Reset your test project?
That's the thing, it's not even that. I have it disconnected for troubleshooting
Google assistant integration is definitely a hacky workaround
Maybe someone smarter than me can figure out the way to make it more seamless
How do I go about removing items from the logbook/history? And maybe even just from devices in general, too? (My UniFi integration added like 100 devices, and I don't care all that much whether the iPad is on WiFi or not.)
Have you read the manual :3
Well it's more about the best way forward. With some of these things it seems like if you move over to using the text config you lose access to the GUI configuration.
Can you swap over, edit, and revert back? In general I'd like to continue managing things through the GUI but the idea of going into each device individually and disabling it sounds not fun.
Is the HA blog offered in RSS format?
Does anyone else find a lot of sysadmins seem to hate dashboards
Like "no need for dashboards I just ssh into anything I need to see"
Would explain why some react that way about portainer
Though I don't actually use Portainer
Yeah portainer is exactly what made me think of it
I've never used portainer either
Portainer may be shit. But it's not shit because it's a dashboard it may be shit because it's shit
Dashboards are fine as long as they have APIs
Such as HPE Oneview
I'm curious how many people around the world realize they can work from home just fine after this is over
Like the US
Norway has always been good at WFH, so it's not very new to us

That be me
Gonna use it to hopefully convince my employer to let me do it regularly
Yeah, full time would be a nope from me
But for the last 12 years I have been able to wfh whenever I feel like it
I just realized that Aussies probably feed their kids Vegemite for breakfast like we serve our kids Prim
But they are as different sides of the spectrum in taste as you can come I reckon
I need to know, do you @hushed basalt ?!?!?

Tbh I think I'd be ok with 100% WFH but I doubt my employer would go for that. 60/40 would be a good compromise
Vegemite is a popular spread
You'll miss the socialisation working in your home 40 hours a week
Primost (or simply prim) is a Norwegian cheese. It is also known as mysost.
The slightly brown cheese is made from cow's milk and has a soft spreadable texture. Cream is added towards the end of the process. The semi-sweet taste is derived from caramelizing the milk sugars of ...
Sure sometimes. Not mine but it's just one of many spreads to put on toast
Like jam, peanut butter,
You only spread it very thinly because it's very strong
Yeah, I've eaten it, and it's.... Peculiar
I lived for a month in new Zealand, and I often see it in the UK
I'm not in love with it
Needs to be on nice really hot but not too crispy toast with butter
And one every like 3-6 months
I need a new WIFI AP my DLINK DIR-615 Wireless N 300 Router, 4-Port 10/100 is a bit old now
Oof
It needs a cronjob to reboot it every 8 hrs
Double oof
Sometimes it juts powers off randomly, as it runs lots of VLANs its a PITA as the DHCP server goes whack and all devices get new IPs even though statically assigned
Oofest of oofs
I looked at a Unifi AC LITE but they cost like $120 AUD, I only want to spend $30 max.
hmm... I'll just walk around the house with a CAT6 cable dragging along the floor
There ya go
consider AP in future
I have 24 APs in my garage, but that doesn't help you because they are EU frequency
New in boxes even
You want them all operating at once within 1cm all on same channel
Wew lad
What brand?
I want to replace a lot of my network gear which was EOL back in 2012
a lot of it is 10/100
my brand!
HP MSM466
a lot of wifi is wep based and only supports G speeds
Wep? What are you? Living in 2002?
Last time I saw wep in use was probably 2004
Well I still use it
AC lites are closer to $150 now
You could get some NanoHDs they're only $320 each
Seriously AC lites are minimum viable
I was looking at older Ubiquiti gear like UAP AP
I'd just get one lite
@rare condor don't bother with older ones
It only does my IOT gear not my main network
You're better off getting some cheap random router off eBay if you don't want to spend over $50
@tidal bronze Any reason why, AFAIK they are still supported by Ubiquiti Controller
My current router was like $35 5 years ago :)
@rare condor you might as well hang wire across. Total shit show
This is just as an AP I use PFsense as router and ASUS Spider WIFI AP thingy for main network
Just put another ssid on it then
I still wouldn't use older unifi stuff
Rip up some copper from the telstra pits and sell it as scrap
It's our common wealth they're pawning off, might as well get something for it
@tidal bronze why though? like poor speed, poor ui what exactly?
Just messes up the entire spectrum.
I thought that was only Ice users who did that?
I had it happen on a couple of our sites before
Ok so you guys are suggesting buy an AC-LIte
Brand New
and it will be decent?
Can I use my existing AP and set same SSID and have seamless handovers?
hmm if you can set minimum rssi on both will switch better but not roam
So not recommended, only use it for IOT?
I'd just use the unifi all round
well you can use it for both but if you want efficient switching both ap's will have to support minimum rssi disconnects
Pointless implementing it on unifi and your device will stick to ASUS forever
@hushed basalt My current Wifi AP works fine and it faster than a Lite
its just the IoT AP
Lites are what, 800Mbps on AC?
yeah this is 1300Mbps
On one band?
Its this one: (not spider) https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1010152-REG/asus_rt_ac68u_ac1900_dual_band_wireless_gigabit.html/specs
1300 on 5Ghz
that's a nice one had it some years ago.
Yes, don't see need to swap main network to Unifi AP
will just use lite for IOT networks I suppose
well depends on number of devices
Mainly ESP devices all within 10 meters
Cool decided based on your advice going to buy a Ubiquiti AC Lite and use it for IoT and Guest networks.
Keep my current AP for everything else
Use SSIDER to make sure different channels are used
should be solid solution?
whats the point of splitting off iot stuff? unless your thinking hackers
downside is added interfrence
almost called you Tediore cause of your blue name lol
You've been forever left in purple land you see
looks like brian lol
Ping at jeedeyes
I think I'd look forward to going on a business trip
I haven't had a sleep in past 8 since like January 2019
Not much difference for me really, I'm used to sleeping 5 hours at most every night
I've just rotated my clock a bit
I get up with the baby most mornings
I used to get up between 8 and 10 in the morning, now I get up at 5-7
Yeah I'm awake at 5.20 now every morning
Being out of bed is a different thing
But little one never makes it past 6am atm
Wife gets to sleep in though :/
Anyone using bond?
There are a lot of things called bond
Propitary stuff ๐คข
huh
Their own bridge, probably using cloud because of control anywhere, and no mention of local
they only list controling cieling fans lol
Strange they didn't mention that on the front page
that's all I need it for.
Trying to setup for a 6 speed fan wondering if anyone else has done it.
Ceiling fans, so continental
there are better means of controling cieling fans
like?
well sonoff makes fan controllers
slap something like tasmota on it and presto 100% local
can you not use it with an rf fan?
I remember I had a ceiling fan in my apartment, people would come in just to see it, because, that shit ain't normal
Ceiling fans are nice when it gets warm, and also quite handy in the winter
Nothing is normal there dude @clear ferry
Had them in the last house, kinda miss them
Good quality fan in reverse on low rpm can be very nice in winter
As long as the ceiling height is good
Most are on reverse at my place
