Hey guys, finally making my entry into home automation after years of putting it off :)
Just starting simple with a few Philips Hue bulbs and a raspberry pi but if all goes well and my budget allows I'll hopefully be adding devices in as I go.
Originally I'd planned on using the Hue Bridge and communicating with that over the local network and API however I've just stumbled onto Home Assistant and this looks much more flexible and fun. If I understand correctly Home Assistant on a pi or dedicated server is able to be a complete replacement for the Hue Bridge so I might end up re-selling the bridge to fund another device if all goes well

scenic aspen
#

no, that is not the case

#

the hue bridge has an antenna for the specific frequency and communication protocol (zigbee) that is used to "talk" and "listen" to the hue bulbs

#

there are other "hubs" that can replace it that home assistant will communicate with

vestal condor
#

I was just about to ask whether I would need a zigbee usb adapter to allow the server to replace the bridge? or is it still not equivalent

scenic aspen
vestal condor
#

ah i see. point taken ๐Ÿ˜ alright looks like I have some more investigating to do

@scenic radish that used to be the in the old app

Given that we've used hogsheads to measure drinks, and that the type of drink results in different volumes, I feel that we've no legs to stand on (particularly after drinking a hogshead of beer)

This is probably a stupid question, but my sdcard is running out of space. Can I make an image and write it on an different sdcard, will I be able to use the free space on the larger sdcard?

Morning, how is the design rant so far?

clever mortar
#

interesting

hearty depot
#

Lucky venver :p

light trout
#

They pack to much in them to make them similar to eachother, which is great for the normal user, but not that great for preformance and troubleshooting, most of what they offer allready exsist as containers from the folks that makes the software that the container runs

vast dove

Get it, thanks for sharing

clear ferry

@hearty depot venv 4 lyfe, don't call a jail a chroot again you pleb lmao boi peepoSmash

light trout

I maintain a "fleet" of containers my self, making them similar is also great for the maintainer of the contianer, so I get why they do it

clear ferry

I should try making a container from scratch once

#

I've only edited exiting ones

light trout

like FROM SCRATCH ?

clear ferry

Like, from nothing

light trout

SCRATCH gives you nothing

hearty depot

I read that in the bsd handbook some time ago :P let's see if I find the line again. @clear ferry

most americans dont live that way......prolly 50% like me buy fresh chickens and meat from the slaughter house locally and they source direct from pastures

50% is close to most

dull chasm
#

yea the city slickers are the ones that buy meat and chickens that are raised by commerical farms

clear ferry
#

Probably 3% buy fresh chickens here, the commercial stuff is so good there is basically no difference

clever mortar
#

We buy most of our meat from the local butchers, because then we know where it came from (quite literally, they can tell you which farm things came from)

clear ferry
#

And in those 3% are restaurants

#

We have so few butchers, I know of 5 perhaps, and 3 of those are halal butchers

dull chasm

yea if we buy that property ....it has a 500 acre cattle ranch on the back side

So many good plugins to freenas now, installing esphome and tasmoadmin, and killing the dockers peepoSmash

We've got two butchers locally, as in within a couple of miles

dull chasm

same here ...well more like 15 or 20 but land is much more spread out than there ... i have no neighboors in two directions for miles

clear ferry
#

Only time I actually buy from butchers is for Christmas, or if I'm by chance close to one and want to barbeque

rare condor

@light trout Extending on from your comment regarding not using HASS, what motivates you to contribute to the project? I find that really interesting.

rare condor

hushed basalt

ยฃ500 for 16GB in a machine that thermal throttles ๐Ÿคข

rare condor

Mac Pricing = 2.5x Normal Prices

hushed basalt
#

That's like $2000 AUD for 32GB

rare condor
#

Then add some overheads

clear ferry
#

Yeah, I have two customers who are Mac shops, they have probably 400 adapters laying around at any time, and whenever a new iPhone is released the Devs rush to IT to order them

I don't condone bullying

Just installed home assistant in docker - and couldn't find the camrea inegration.... I know it exists from looking up the integration... but it's not in the list of integrations to add

#

that led me down the rabbit hole of docker vs image, hass.io vs... supervised, I guess?

#

Main question, am I losing anything by doing the docker route, or is it just more work? I assume I put a 'camera:' line in config.yaml to 'enable' the integration, but I also realize I don't get the add-on store this way?

#

the stuff I read about doing one vs the other didn't really give me a clear picture as to whether one is 'better' or 'more complete' than the other

im attempting to put together an affordable home automation package. . . can anyone recommend reliable hardware as far as the main controller (pi 4?) and reliable water sensors

steel urchin
#

if you have a technology in mind, see the apropos channels

flint pecan
#

im actually searching for the proper way to go. . . i have my own HA installation in a docker inside of OMV installation on my NAS

clear ferry
#

@flint pecan pi and reliable isn't something I would use in the same sentence

steel urchin
#

you looking to do DIY Cpt?

#

lots of smart folks, just take a stab somewhere ๐Ÿ™‚

flint pecan
#

i have a networking company that services homes/small business

steel urchin
#

I think the argument there is that Pi's just have a tendency to go kaput over time, or the sd-card itself... eventually it turns into a headache

flint pecan
#

trying to put together a package i can sell relatively cheap to people wanting to break into automation. . . was just looking for the best setup

#

docker or vm is fine for me, but most would-be customers dont already have a pc thats always on

steel urchin
#

i mean, it's all subjective, but best would be a NUC with NVME, 8gb RAM would suffice...

#

but you're going to pay heavily for that footprint and power combo

#

i personally went with an optiplex sff and slapped 32gb and a few SSDs in it

#

but if you're looking for clientele i'd probably try to find a nice small form factor like the NUC...

Looks to be not much more cost than a Pi, but a lot more robust

a waste of R&D

steel urchin

forest edge

truthfully nuc's are way overpowered for HA by itself

scenic radish
#

i think i saw someone get a "Mini PC"
@steel urchin that might be me, just ordered one yesterday

forest edge
#

I don't even break using 1GB on my rpi4

steel urchin
#

Absolutely they are, but you'd get a lot more longevity out of it

#

There's a reason they exist ๐Ÿ˜œ

flint pecan
#

i looked at some mini's but all i see is seleron or the x5 processor that is ranked lower than celeron

scenic radish
#

I like that it takes an SSD/HDD

#

Not expecting blazing performance but wanted a step up from the pi

forest edge
#

if the rpi had a emmc slot it would be hands down the best "fitting" devvice for HA

scenic radish
#

Except for performance

reef abyss
#

@steel urchin I already have the libvirt host set up, I run other stuff on it

forest edge
#

well that depends on what "addons" extras you use with it

#

for HA by itself it's more than enough

reef abyss
#

although I tried downloading the qcow2 image and importing it but I got 'no bootable drive'. so I dunno what was going on there

#

I'l just stick with my docker setup for now

steel urchin
#

the host and pools were simple to set up @reef abyss ... my complaint was the performance was abysmal

#

at 5ish hours it still had 10 more to go

reef abyss
#

.... to do what?

steel urchin
#

so i created a vbox vm and allocated the full 300gb disk and was installing windows within 5 minutes

#

allocate a 300gb disk... like i said earlier

reef abyss
#

ah

steel urchin
#

i tried qcow2 and raw.... i'd rather eat a bowl of glass than to wait that long

reef abyss
#

it imported right away for me, but it didn't work, so I dunno if I did it wrong or what

steel urchin
#

lol i like how that mini pc says "TDP unlocker" .... all they did was add a fan to the unit ๐Ÿคฃ

my tandy 1000RL was a POS and it made me better at tech because as a little kid while friends had good pc that played latest games i had shit one that couldnt because it didnt support EGA (which was needed at the time) and it had 512kb of ram while everything needed 640K so i couldnt run games and instead tinkered trying to get them working. sometimes i wonder if i would be as profecient as i am today if my pc could justp lay those games lmao

#

if the games just worked maybe i would have just rotted my mind playing them like my friends, those friends were never good with computers

#

it was funny too because i saved like birthday and chrisrmas to spend hundreds on a 256KB RAM upgrade chip to finally have 640KB and then all the games needed 1MB of ram lol

#

and VGA

#

i think maybe i got a EGA card i dont remember

#

no nevermind that 1000RL didnt have the ability to add graphics card

#

actually i guess integrated graphics has been around longer than i thought

clear ferry
#

I'm probably the most proficient of all my friends with technology and computers, and I played a hella lot more games than them, but I also built my own when I was 12 and troubleshooted computers and electronics since I could talk lmao

vast lily
#

i had some XT's along the way too, more garbage picks by my dad he worked in a super rich area next to a major tech company so people threw out all sorts of good expensive tech that needed very easy minor erepairs

#

well you couldnt have been playing games with all your spare time if you were building them and doing the other stuff

#

my friends spent all their free time gaming, i still gamed of course but just not as much

clear ferry
#

I played a lot, I was just terrible at it mostly haha

vast lily
#

same lmao

#

i used to get trashed in quake3d

#

but it was fun to run it over like SLIP in the early days

#

i remmeber i had a dual SLIP dial up connection, i think it was called a shotgun connection b y the ISP where i would dial up 2 modems with SLIP (from Linux) at maybe 14.4 or 28.8 and it was epic at the time speed wise

Have you read the manual :3

lethal ice
#

Well it's more about the best way forward. With some of these things it seems like if you move over to using the text config you lose access to the GUI configuration.

#

Can you swap over, edit, and revert back? In general I'd like to continue managing things through the GUI but the idea of going into each device individually and disabling it sounds not fun.

Is the HA blog offered in RSS format?

hushed basalt
#

Does anyone else find a lot of sysadmins seem to hate dashboards

#

Like "no need for dashboards I just ssh into anything I need to see"

scenic radish
#

Would explain why some react that way about portainer

#

Though I don't actually use Portainer

hushed basalt
#

Yeah portainer is exactly what made me think of it

#

I've never used portainer either

#

Portainer may be shit. But it's not shit because it's a dashboard it may be shit because it's shit

clear ferry
#

Dashboards are fine as long as they have APIs

#

Such as HPE Oneview

#

I'm curious how many people around the world realize they can work from home just fine after this is over

#

Like the US

#

Norway has always been good at WFH, so it's not very new to us

scenic radish
#

That be me

#

Gonna use it to hopefully convince my employer to let me do it regularly

hushed basalt
#

I'd prefer to WFH 60+% of the time

#

Not full time though

clear ferry
#

Yeah, full time would be a nope from me

#

But for the last 12 years I have been able to wfh whenever I feel like it

#

I just realized that Aussies probably feed their kids Vegemite for breakfast like we serve our kids Prim

#

But they are as different sides of the spectrum in taste as you can come I reckon

#

I need to know, do you @hushed basalt ?!?!?

scenic radish
#

Tbh I think I'd be ok with 100% WFH but I doubt my employer would go for that. 60/40 would be a good compromise

hushed basalt
#

Vegemite is a popular spread

clear ferry
#

I am usually 3% in the office

#

But do kids get it for breakfast?

hushed basalt
#

You'll miss the socialisation working in your home 40 hours a week

clear ferry
#

Primost (or simply prim) is a Norwegian cheese. It is also known as mysost.
The slightly brown cheese is made from cow's milk and has a soft spreadable texture. Cream is added towards the end of the process. The semi-sweet taste is derived from caramelizing the milk sugars of ...

hushed basalt
#

Sure sometimes. Not mine but it's just one of many spreads to put on toast

#

Like jam, peanut butter,

#

You only spread it very thinly because it's very strong

clear ferry
#

Yeah, I've eaten it, and it's.... Peculiar

#

I lived for a month in new Zealand, and I often see it in the UK

hushed basalt
#

I'm not in love with it

#

Needs to be on nice really hot but not too crispy toast with butter

#

And one every like 3-6 months

rare condor
#

I need a new WIFI AP my DLINK DIR-615 Wireless N 300 Router, 4-Port 10/100 is a bit old now

scenic radish
#

Oof

rare condor
#

It needs a cronjob to reboot it every 8 hrs

scenic radish
#

Double oof

rare condor
#

Sometimes it juts powers off randomly, as it runs lots of VLANs its a PITA as the DHCP server goes whack and all devices get new IPs even though statically assigned

scenic radish
#

Oofest of oofs

rare condor
#

I looked at a Unifi AC LITE but they cost like $120 AUD, I only want to spend $30 max.

scenic radish
#

Buy nice or buy twice

rare condor
#

hmm... I'll just walk around the house with a CAT6 cable dragging along the floor

scenic radish
#

There ya go

rare condor
#

consider AP in future

clear ferry
#

I have 24 APs in my garage, but that doesn't help you because they are EU frequency haha

rare condor
#

24 APs is not enough

#

Some might still work

clear ferry
#

New in boxes even

rare condor
#

You want them all operating at once within 1cm all on same channel

scenic radish
#

Wew lad

rare condor
#

What brand?

#

I want to replace a lot of my network gear which was EOL back in 2012

#

a lot of it is 10/100

scenic radish
#

my brand!

clear ferry
#

HP MSM466

rare condor
#

a lot of wifi is wep based and only supports G speeds

clear ferry
#

Wep? What are you? Living in 2002?

rare condor
#

Living on Student budget

#

๐Ÿ˜›

clear ferry
#

Last time I saw wep in use was probably 2004

rare condor
#

Well thats all it supports

#

My DIR615 does WPA2

#

Its from 2009

clear ferry
#

The DIR615 was shit even when it was released

#

I know a lot of people who had it

rare condor
#

Well I still use it

hushed basalt
#

AC lites are closer to $150 now

#

You could get some NanoHDs they're only $320 each

#

Seriously AC lites are minimum viable

rare condor
#

I was looking at older Ubiquiti gear like UAP AP

hushed basalt
#

I'd just get one lite

tidal bronze
#

@rare condor don't bother with older ones

rare condor
#

It only does my IOT gear not my main network

hushed basalt
#

You're better off getting some cheap random router off eBay if you don't want to spend over $50

rare condor
#

@tidal bronze Any reason why, AFAIK they are still supported by Ubiquiti Controller

hushed basalt
#

My current router was like $35 5 years ago :)

tidal bronze
#

@rare condor you might as well hang wire across. Total shit show

rare condor
#

This is just as an AP I use PFsense as router and ASUS Spider WIFI AP thingy for main network

hushed basalt
#

Just put another ssid on it then

tidal bronze
#

I still wouldn't use older unifi stuff

rare condor
#

@hushed basalt Doesn't support VLANS

#

Tomato FW kind of does but had problems

hushed basalt
#

Rip up some copper from the telstra pits and sell it as scrap

#

It's our common wealth they're pawning off, might as well get something for it

rare condor
#

@tidal bronze why though? like poor speed, poor ui what exactly?

tidal bronze
#

Just messes up the entire spectrum.

rare condor
#

I thought that was only Ice users who did that?

#

I had it happen on a couple of our sites before

#

Ok so you guys are suggesting buy an AC-LIte

#

Brand New

#

and it will be decent?

tidal bronze
#

AP-AC-LR if you are going iot

#

best bang for the buck

rare condor
#

Yeah I live in a small unit

#

AP-AC-LR offers not much benefit

tidal bronze
#

ESP + LR match made in heaven

#

lite would do as well

rare condor
#

Can I use my existing AP and set same SSID and have seamless handovers?

tidal bronze
#

what's the existing one?

#

unifi as well?

rare condor
#

nah ASUS

#

running custom fw

#

works flawlessly sustain 70mb/s transfer to server

tidal bronze
#

hmm if you can set minimum rssi on both will switch better but not roam

rare condor
#

So not recommended, only use it for IOT?

hushed basalt
#

I'd just use the unifi all round

tidal bronze
#

well you can use it for both but if you want efficient switching both ap's will have to support minimum rssi disconnects

#

Pointless implementing it on unifi and your device will stick to ASUS forever

rare condor
#

@hushed basalt My current Wifi AP works fine and it faster than a Lite

#

its just the IoT AP

hushed basalt
#

Lites are what, 800Mbps on AC?

rare condor
#

yeah this is 1300Mbps

hushed basalt
#

On one band?

rare condor
#

1300 on 5Ghz

tidal bronze
#

that's a nice one had it some years ago.

rare condor
#

Yes, don't see need to swap main network to Unifi AP

#

will just use lite for IOT networks I suppose

tidal bronze
#

well depends on number of devices

rare condor
#

Mainly ESP devices all within 10 meters

#

Cool decided based on your advice going to buy a Ubiquiti AC Lite and use it for IoT and Guest networks.

#

Keep my current AP for everything else

#

Use SSIDER to make sure different channels are used

#

should be solid solution?

clear ferry
#

Range overlap should be kept at a minimum too

#

No wait, different ssid I guess

forest edge
#

whats the point of splitting off iot stuff? unless your thinking hackers

clear ferry
#

Paranoia mostly

#

Or other mental stuff

forest edge
#

downside is added interfrence

clear ferry
#

That doesn't matter when CHYNA can't see your traffic

forest edge
#

almost called you Tediore cause of your blue name lol

clear ferry
#

You've been forever left in purple land you see

forest edge
#

i like purple tho

#

cause then i'm not blue

forest edge
#

looks like brian lol

clear ferry
#

Maybe it is

hushed basalt

Ping at jeedeyes

#

I think I'd look forward to going on a business trip

#

I haven't had a sleep in past 8 since like January 2019

clear ferry
#

Not much difference for me really, I'm used to sleeping 5 hours at most every night

#

I've just rotated my clock a bit

#

I get up with the baby most mornings

#

I used to get up between 8 and 10 in the morning, now I get up at 5-7

hushed basalt
#

Yeah I'm awake at 5.20 now every morning

#

Being out of bed is a different thing

#

But little one never makes it past 6am atm

#

Wife gets to sleep in though :/

tidal bronze
#

Anyone using bond?

clear ferry
#

There are a lot of things called bond

tidal bronze
#
clear ferry
#

Propitary stuff ๐Ÿคข

tidal bronze
#

huh

clear ferry
#

Their own bridge, probably using cloud because of control anywhere, and no mention of local

forest edge
#

they only list controling cieling fans lol

clear ferry
#

Strange they didn't mention that on the front page raised_eye

tidal bronze
#

that's all I need it for.

#

Trying to setup for a 6 speed fan wondering if anyone else has done it.

clear ferry
#

Ceiling fans, so continental haha

forest edge
#

there are better means of controling cieling fans

tidal bronze
#

like?

forest edge
#

well sonoff makes fan controllers

#

slap something like tasmota on it and presto 100% local

tidal bronze
#

have ifan03 running tasmota as well.

#

Does not help existing rf fans

forest edge
#

can you not use it with an rf fan?

clear ferry
#

I remember I had a ceiling fan in my apartment, people would come in just to see it, because, that shit ain't normal

clever mortar
#

Ceiling fans are nice when it gets warm, and also quite handy in the winter

tidal bronze
#

Nothing is normal there dude @clear ferry

clever mortar
#

Had them in the last house, kinda miss them

forest edge
#

i have them all over the house

#

every room cept basement

hushed basalt
#

Good quality fan in reverse on low rpm can be very nice in winter

#

As long as the ceiling height is good

tidal bronze
#

Most are on reverse at my place

forest edge
#

even have one on the enclosed deck

#

the fins are shaped like leafs lol

hushed basalt
#

I'm short so I have no chance of hitting them but they can kill the openness of the room if it's not high enough

#

My FIL has a big one under his deck

#

Like a BAF but smaller
