@scenic radish I was all in on minidisc for quite a few years
Good times
There was a HiFi equipment chain called Tweeter, and they had the most permissive extended warranty policy of any store I've ever visited. Within 2 years, for any reason, you could bring it back and replace it with the same or equivalent available level model, AND they let you re-up the extended warranty for another 2 years for $50
I used to master minidisk for a friend in the late 90s, he had a SCSI to minidisk interface I think it was, but I had a much faster computer
Every 2 years I brought mine back "because it wasn't working anymore" and they basically gave me that new year's top of the line model for $50
It was a fantastic scam while it lasted. Can't imagine why they went out of business.
Ok, discord doesn't work Like I want it...
I was planning on saying something before that gif...
you can edit your previously posted messages
While reading through a couple of channels my conclusion was that a lot of people spend an awful lot of time helping others (like me). Therefor I wanted to say THANK YOU ALL!

just notice when i turn on my phone gps hassio app get discounted and cant not connect back on..
anyone came across this issue before
I only turn off my GPS three times per year, so I wouldn't know
... this is crazy as soon as i turn off my GPS it logged back to my account
haha now i reinstalled the app.. i cant get connected at all with or w/o gps on
Hey, there are a lot of great add-ons out there but I'm a home assistant user not a hass.io user. Is there anyway to install add-ons like the dropbox backup or home panel?
water softener saga continues
it reconnected to wifi and dumped a ton of extra data over the serial port
it's connecting to an aws mqtt broker and doing cert verification :[
anyone know if there's a working link for VHDX for installation? my pi is dead in the water and I need to get a system up before Will.i.am ransoms my lightbulbs π
Got my security system to auto arm itself when no one is home if (when) we forget to arm it
With no phones :p
why do I see an accidental alarm trip in your future lol
ah that sucks cgarwood, did the serial not work out?
@wild grove Iβm getting most of the info over serial OK. Just digging deeper to see if I can find a way to control it
@brisk glen what are you using to detect that you aren't home?
Only thing Iβd like to have that I donβt see in the current serial output is gallons of water used for the day
Which does show up on their cloud site
@fathom crow ecobee smart sensors
They are basically occupancy sensors with temperature
Using them to trigger abode
@brisk glen So a glorified motion sensor? (ah with temp)
It also ignores animals
Now that's interesting.
Odd. Should be there somewhere. I wonder if it runs its own broker you can subscribe to like a power company bridge.
I'm still trying to come up with a good presence detection scheme. Right now I have phones connecting to wifi and HA app on phone doing basic GPS. But I want real room presence detection. Looked at room-assistant but can't figure out what I'd wear or have with me all the time that is going to keep a static BT mac address. Even my phone automatically randomizes it and shuts off beacon apps to save the battery.
I gave up and shoved a bunch of ecobee smart sensors
They donβt stop detection as fast as I would like but itβs good enough
I'd love to know WHO is home though. Maybe even do it securely enough I can use it for locks.
Hmm, not a bad idea. I've got a crap ton of esp32-cams sitting around.
Bought 8 on aliexpress when I saw them for $6.
I have a unifi setup
If I could feed them all to my server and then run tensorflow...
I got these originally to monitor my classroom supplies and cut down on theft.
I'm sure. These things are crap resolution but good enough for 5-10ft face recognition.
I love how I can scrub through the day on the feed
Canβt do that with other systems
Yeah, UniFi Protect is definitely the closest experience to what you'd expect from a hosted solution like Nest
I'm curious about their new doorbell cam.
@lethal ice bro, didn't you learn your lesson from Wink?
i hear Bofa is adding a local API
I'm not sure what the connection is.
That's the whole point, isn't it? Self-hosting things.
In case it was unclear, the statement was that UniFi Protect, as an owned/fully local service that is not reliant on the cloud, has a lot of the bells and whistles and UX that you'd expect from a cloud service like Nest
Like @brisk glen pointed out, having a timeline you can scrub through with events and activity zones is not generally a thing you get with cheap IP cams
or cheap cameras in general
Unifi protect is all local but uses their servers to negotiate the connection at first for their mobile apps
Why they call it the hybrid cloud
Indeed
I'm running some 3 megapickle PoE cameras and a cheap NVR
I can access it locally via the IP address
You could also avoid using the hybrid cloud entirely if you preferred to VPN from mobile
Or exposed ports
@lethal ice the mobile app does not support local only yet
But you can view via the web browser
@left granite head on over to #330944238910963714
Ahh. I've only used the web interface to a friend's install. Haven't jumped in yet myself but am big on ubnt in general
that's formerly the hassio channel, stuff got renamed
Sounds good, sorry
But strongly considering replacing all this Nest stuff at some point in the not too distant future
probably not here
Unifi protect is a thousand times faster than HomeKit secure video
I can scrub through the videos over cellular
I think if I were to replace my cameras I'd ditch the NVR and get some licenses to Surveillance Station
Synology?
yep
I would stay with unifi protect
Yeah I have a diskstation too
and better than setting up a windows box to run BlueIris
Surveillance Station doesn't compare though imo UX-wise to Protect
But it's certainly not a bad option
I can enable rstp streams later or do anonymous snapshots and add in Object Recognization
Megapickle lol
Use pushover or something if I really wanted face detection
I have a full unifi network :p
That IDS/IPS is super nice to have
Yeah. I need to upgrade to the udmpro at some point
Still running my us-48-poe off a usg3
why the hell do you have a 48 port switch?
Because overkill is the best kill!
(and because I got it for free from the unifi beta program)
But I'm using 20 of the 48 ports and haven't finished running cat6 drops in the house so I'll get there!
Nothing like finding out that Cisco Webex meetings like to try to talk to a Hong Kong dns????? Server
That was my IPS
did google fix their DNS shit yet?
I forgot I had to switch off their DNS server last week and didn't switch back
Auto blocked and alerts came up about dns policy violations
Use my dam pi-hole server
Having to use WebEx in general makes me feel less sad about Teams
I had to switch off of using google's DNS and use ATT DNS last week because google was having some issue
Hmm not sure Brian
@lethal ice teams constantly crashes
Havenβt used google dns in years
I think I'm still on Google dns though
@brisk glen what root servers do you use?
I just use quad 9
whose is that?
I had issues with them
IBM
I forget what it was but something stopped working
I have to be more careful with the potential breaking changes since I'm not the only one working from home
and I can't run to Starbucks if I screw something up and have a conference call π
@last dirge i use cloudflare dns
Faster than google for me
Plus not being datamined by alphabet
Yeah I'm also using cloudflare DNS
I don't think alphabet has as much influence over google as some believe. I think it's more like john oliver and AT&T. sure AT&T cuts his paycheck but it dosen't stop him from calling them names lol
I don't think so?
Alphabet is what we've always known as Google, they just changed their name to Alphabet and put their search engine as a subsidiary
Yeah I thought essentially alphabet == google
For all intensive purposes intents and purposes
Alphabet is Google's parent company
either way it's not like Alphabet makes all the decisions. that was apparent during the Google Fiber drive
Foogle Giber
Google is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Alphabet
I think that umbrella covers a few other companies as well
Alphabet can dictate whatever they choose to, but they don't always micromanage
Isn't the CEO of both companies the same guy right now though?
Reminds me about the best Google April fools joke
Think it was 2007
Fiber cable up through toilets
Still better than our $65b DSL rollout
hi all - are "groups" still a thing in HA or being phased out?
Groups are still a thing and are not going anywhere
that's a strong answer, thanks - not sure where i got that from, they seem pretty fundamental to me. No GUI option to config them though?
areas, scenes yes, groups - no, but maybe I'm missing it - just have to be configurated in yaml?
It does seem strange that groups don't have a GUI!
Feels like they have been abandoned slightly.
Also - it's very annoying that a group button in Lovelace does not change the icon colour when on / off!
GUI π€’
There's no group button in Lovelace π
Groups used to have a UI, but groups in the pre-Lovelace days had performance issues, so the UI editor was removed
By group button, I mean a button card with a group as the entity.
all good though, thanks for the confirmation
I'll get back to tweaking my zigbee stuff and many other projects
I suspect now that the UI no longer uses groups an editor may return, but even some of the devs are confused about their purpose π
Apparently they've been replaced by light.group and the UI editor π€·
Should we be using areas instead of groups then?? Confused how I would group a bunch of devices otherwise!
You can use them all
That's does not make any sense, groups are for all entities, not just lights π€·
Areas are good for things like rooms, groups for any collection of related things
Groups... do quite a bit π
Mainly in automation
Yup, automations, automations, automations
HA is mainly automations (atleast IMO)
Yup, if you want a smart home there's easier ways of achieving that (at least until yet another cloud service implodes)
I don't think my wife ever uses the front-end
She just yells at me if things don't work
We use voice commands a lot though
And I think dedicated hardware buttons are a must for a lot of things
i dumped automations.
zero automations now - all node red - love it.
but yes, just another way to automate things, i find it much easier to manage though but maybe not as user friendly - but automations in HA were becoming unmanageable
That's still automations, just not automation π
For me, home automation wins over smart home 100%
i think that's right, i want to do much more
things "just happen", so cool
i think i need to do more of the simple things.
e.g. open a cupboard door and an interior light goes on
and off when it's closed..
like a fridge - haha
Being able to control AC remotely, even manually, has been a godsend
Yeah, our garden lights turn on and off automatically based on the back doors opening and closing. That took a while to get right, but it's awesome
As other I have almost everything automated in some way or another. I have everything in node-red now, but my god, some of them get complicated!
E.g. kitchen lights - come on with sensor, but only at certain lux. But must also disable the sensor if I use the light switch (then enable sensor after period), and then of course set a scene when we have a kitchen disco! ππ
Weirdly complicated is so normal π
Their method of writing environ secrets to config files on load isn't flash though
Want to commit secrets, that's how you commit secrets
morning. ok REALLY stupid question. I've read the docs and it's not 100% clear to me if HA acts simply as an orchestrator for control using product clouds, or whether it actually replaces those clouds. Example - I have LIFX bulbs which I see have an integration. If installed and configured, do my bulbs no longer require connections to the LIFX cloud? My goal is twofold - 1. keep my data here 2. not to be left with paperweights if LIFX go bust. Thx
See the docs for your #integrations-archived
It varies
If it says Local then it's local, if it says Cloud then it's cloud...
https://www.home-assistant.io/integrations/lifx/: IoT class: Local Polling
https://www.home-assistant.io/integrations/lifx_cloud/ is too old to say, but the name tells you all π
Yeah - I read that thanks - I had interpreted the "cloud" flavour as "allowing" access to cloud scenes - could have been HA reading the cloud config and replicating... However - you've given me enough confidence (quickly!) to convince me to invest the effort in a poc. Much appreciated!
For idiots like me, an architectural overview picture may help π
If there was one...
Each integration is different, and the dev may not even be sure if they'll work when they lose their related cloud service
This is why IMO you should go for things that are designed to be local - #zigbee-archived, #zwave-archived, etc
@clear ferry nice lookin 80's car you got there
It's a 2005 thank you very much
weird. looks like the headlights off one of those old fancy dictator cars you see in those older movies. with the two small flags on either side of the hood etc
Yeah, you know, European headlights actually have a function, not just there to guide the air to an oversized underpowered engine like in the us
Also, many brands don't change their headlights that much through revisions
TIL the version of units(1) that's shipped with macOS is 27 years old...
Just look at at how long the Audi A4 has looked pretty much the same π
oversized underpowered engine
you are confused. we do nothing that is underpowered lol
you mean our trucks?
That library is older than many of my colleagues ...
you never heard of torque?
Is there another motor transportation vehicle in the us?
well i mean, yea I might be slow pulling your home off it's foundation but the point is, I will pull it off it's foundation lol
I mean... units, by their nature, don't update very often... but...
The homebrew version is better...
Interesting
@low harness are you implying that more than 2% of the mac users ever open the console though?
How do I add a add-on store since the update?
I cant find the button π
I want to add the https://github.com/danielwelch/hassio-zigbee2mqtt repo to install the plugin from
Hass.io add-on for zigbee2mqtt. Contribute to danielwelch/hassio-zigbee2mqtt development by creating an account on GitHub.
What do you the best way to run a python script on a headless rpi is
Systemd, docker?
what kind of python script? I usually just ssh in and run them in a screen session
It needs to be a permanent script
It polls my usb barcode scanner and transmits those strings to grocy with requests
For headless consumption
You can run something permenantly in screen @hushed basalt
But also busy sanding my headlights
@clear ferry what a rookie car
my turn to call something rookie π
Atleast i have a car, or actually 3
@midnight adder
We have 1 between two of us
Sometimes that feels like too many
Think of how much workshop stuff I could have in the garage with no car in there
I had five at one point
Do you think this is a scam
$20AUD shipped for CC audio
Didn't you want someore @scenic radish
Seems a bit fishy to me
I guess it's protected by Ebay.
My experience with ebay protection was pretty bad. Aliexpress is much better in that regard
I have this rackmount speaker amp I got for free
I think it's 400w
I can't use it yet but in my own house I might be able to. If I run passive speakers
4 in 4 out
So in theory I could run 4 CC audios into it
Whole house audio!
Although for 4 channels in a rack I'm not sure if I'm better off with some sort of raspberry pi DAC
If they play nice with chromecast..
Brand: Unbranded
Storage Capacity: 2 GB Model: A95X Max
That's a bit sus
do phillips bulbs act as a zigbee router?
or are they just receivers ?
gotta get zigbee to the garden π
I think anything thats mains powered generally is a router
Ahh yeah
dw im just blind
it says right next to it "router"
Homeassistant just blows me away every time I must say
Like theres a load of complicated shit going on but somehow it works every time
@hushed basalt I did indeed. Probably not from that seller though lol
@hushed basalt most mains powered zigbee devices should be routers/repeaters... except the fan modules i put in every ceiling fan :[
Funny if they were legit Tedi
And we;re just passing up a steal
But when people are selling them for $100 USD it seems sus
is there a webaddress for just the lovelace UI
without the homeassistant stuff around it?
Non HASS question: I'm planning to remake the network setup at home so i was wondering if you guys knew any good programs/websites to make a visual network plan?
Thanks, found a more network specialized website tho. lucidchart.com π
btw i dont think you can only have lovelace. maybe with some custom card that can hide the rest
Compact custom header might be able to block the left side part.
but I dont need it waste screen space with the Home assistant toolbars
just full screen lovelace
with that you can enable kiosk mode that is probably what you want
my bad, its just custom header https://github.com/maykar/custom-header
Draw io is good for most, but if I document installations I use Visio + visiocafe + shape data
So easy to extract network port info when needed
or google drawings
there are assloads of free templates out there with different "components" you can use
Visiocafe is the most comprehensive multivendor with detail I've used atleast
assloads
did you know that a butt is an actual unit of measurement
so you can actually have a buttload of wine?
i want there to be a unit called "allotta"
@clever mortar do you guys call gas stations or petrol station/bunks in UK?
Generally petrol station
Garage π
lol
Somewhere to put your car, or get it fixed
Ok the guy in this video was lying then lol
like mechanic shop - where they fix things?
I've heard folks call petrol bunks - may be in Australia!
did you know that a butt is an actual unit of measurement
@last dirge you are just buttload of knowledge! π
boom roasted
osnap
My face when the wife says lights aren't working and I know I just restarted the mqtt server

now I got lost in damn reddit!
So my rpi3 just went down after attempting updating from 0.108.8 to 0.109.6, interface felt kinda slow too, knew it was in trouble when Portainer kept loading after hitting the update button. So, I want to get a NUC asap which should, hopefully, be a bit more reliable. Can't decide if I should go for the 6th gen i5 (used with 8GB RAM and 256GB SSD for 275) or a new 7th gen pentium (quad core J5005, with 8GB RAM and 256GB SSD should be around the same price in total). I'd probably run proxmox on it and experiment with things like radarr/sonarr..
https://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Intel-Pentium-Silver-J5005-vs-Intel-Core-i5-6500/m487063vs3513
The difference in performance is quite big tbh
The i5 nuc is running an i5 6260U though, which still is a little more powerful, but the gap isn't as big with the i5 6500
For the same price I would still do the i5 https://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Intel-Pentium-Silver-J5005-vs-Intel-Core-i5-6260U/m487063vsm37385
keep in mind that unless I'm mistaken, 6th gen are DDR3 and 7th are DDR4
not that people tend to upgrade these often, but if you have some ram already
Both are ddr4
Even if the 5005 has two more cores, the 8GB limit is a deal breaker for me
oh, it was only the Gen 6 Celeron/Pentium that was still DDR3
Because it consumes so much power it doubles as a space heater?
Rookie numbers, gotta have 400w tdp or more
Actually I think the dedicated GPU is causing more heat issues than the CPU
Everytime I play a video the system temp jumps up to 80C +
Right now with a load average of 1.00 0.94 0.99 it's at 52C
No video playing
windows 10 VM currently running also
Can't pass the video card through to the VM so video performance is shite, not that it really matters
Yeah, my older system was a bit like that, ran hotter than the current stuff
Can't being myself to get rid of it since I spent like $1000 on it back in the day
My main server is currently idle at 26C, some 5C above room temperature
Ugh lol
The Pis run hotter π
This thing is in the same room that also has the most thermal transfer to/from the outside
Along with my xbox
So it's just a sauna in the summer
(Only room in my condo that has two exterior walls)
Ah, our Family Room is like that, always the hottest room as it gets sun in the morning and afternoon, and is effectively a continuation of the kitchen, connected to the utility room
So, if there's any washing or cooking going on, it gets heated up. Then the gaming starts π
Yeah this room has a window facing southeast too
Probably not as bad as southwest though
The last place we lived in the back of the house was pretty perfectly south-west
Plus all the fucking radio waves coming out of this room (WiFi, two Zigbee, one Z-wave, one 9xx MHz, one 433 MHz)
The bedroom on that side got damn hot in summer
Bet it did
Gotta get some exterior shutters
Also I'm such a lightweight. This pint of 6% ABV beer already has me buzzed
Then again, I only had two bananas for brekky
Reflective window film really helps too
Ah yeah
We put some on one window last year, where there's no (interior) shutters and it really helped
We'll be doing the same to similar windows this year
There ya go
I think it dropped the interior temperature by a good 4 to 5 degrees (C)
I thought about doing that for privacy since I live in a condo. I'm on the second floor though at least
Can't let anyone see my smart home goodies
RIP
::1 or go home !
or go 127.0.0.1?

I put in blackout curtains and it helps a lot
double pleated shades work well too
Anyone here have knowledge of TV's?
I'm trying to figure out what's the best bang for buck
But i have no clue how that edge lit , dimming
direct led?
how bad of a picture quality are you willing to withstand?
Vizio TVs are generally a good value
I have this shortlist
Sorry for dutch, but you would figure it out prolly
the second samsung(ue32), is my current tv
those all have pretty shit refresh rates
well, the ones with refresh rates listed
and only one's got response time
I'm mostly interested in the direct led story
obviously
a lot of that's pretty close to German
it's got the most winkels
@last dirge but how many megapickles does it have?
8.8 MP for cinema 4K
I legit laughed when I saw you write megapickles yesterday lol
I'm gonna use that all the time now
I can't believe I've never thought of that before
Just like popsockets π
I could have thought of that
but I didn't
What are your opinions between pfSense and OPNsense?
Im new to custom routers like pfsense and the like btw
I just wanted to shout out at everyone who works in this community to help others! You are all great!
@last plaza you'll get a kick out of this
DBA emails me today "this materialized view is failing in production"
so I start looking and someone's changed the underlying table column definition
A MONTH AGO
and nobody from the database team noticed, our 3rd party support noticed when they were looking at something completely unrelated
ive been using pfsense or years, i dont do much with it, just works
@jagged mantle i ran pfsense for over 15 years, swapped to opnsense this year because pfsense is getting too strict and not really innovative any more
So would you recommend opnsense over pfsense for me to begin with?
pinned down by gun fire with 3 closing in Tediore leans over and says, So did you know about Hue bulbs and HA?
lmao
IS THIS HOW YOU TREAT PEOPLE IN MISSOURI??
DID I EVEN SPELL THAT RIGHT? IT LOOKS WEIRD
that stranger said it best, "I don't know a word you just said!"
that was hilarious
I recognise all those words, just not in way you used them
my new floor mat finally came in, no more getting a wheel stuck on a crack lol
so it didn't occur to me that the python program i wrote that grabs the info for the current song playing on my favorite radio station is really an unintentional scrobbling project
π
Apparently it's semi-deliberate
Somebody raised an issue before, and it supresses things, but I'm not sure it's logical
@scenic radish misery is more like it
logbook trying to interfere with my first amendment rights
I think it's supposed to suppress repeats, but it's "a bit" hit and miss/random
Actual image of @forest edge btw https://images.app.goo.gl/ezDuAPgh752hU5BD7
that's other Ron!
I've a feeling it doesn't really suppress just duplicates, I think it's more Oy! You! Out! at random
fuck this state change in particular

not nice to talk about @clear ferry that way
Nothing odd there, yet
Pfft, I have to remember to flip the status, and I usually forget
Attention to irrelevant details has never been my strong suit
I have attention for all details
Which complies with my ADHD, but owell.
That's the reason i get paid to find new stuff.

I've tried a bunch of different methods to get better at that

I remember some names, but ... depends on whether I actually interact with them in the next half hour or not

gonna make some grilled hot italian sausage tonight for dinner
no, not with Grand Sauce β’οΈ @forest edge
also, can we please address that sausages are called bangers in the UK?
...
once you cook the sausage I imagine getting Grand Sauce out of it would be difficult.
My brother and his family lives in UK - every time I talk to the kids, I learn something new!
I'll go get some fizzy drink π
Don't forget your pop
Then there's a tin - aka a can
whats a pop? fizzy pop? Is it same as soda?
tin makes sense as most cans used to be made of tin in the ancient days
Yup
but, things have changed now - cans are made of aluminum now π

Too bad none of my friends will play steam games with me πΏ
@hushed basalt can't find anyone to play https://store.steampowered.com/app/434260/My_Name_is_Mayo/ with ya huh?
Anyone know if it's possible to use a USB audio source with Mopidy? I was gifted a turntable with a USB output and I'd like to be able to make it indirectly network connected even though I know I'd need to control playback on the turntable itself
It's not really a mopidy feature
You really are looking for a seperate application to stream from a sound source to something mopidy can consume
Step one is to plug it into a debian based computer/rpi and see if you can get it to work there first
Ah good to know, thanks.
Then you need to take that pipe and put it into something like ffmpeg or snapcast or something
To turn it into a stream that mopidy can then play
My laptop runs Debian so I'll play around there first
The end goal is to be able to stream to my Google homes which I think would be possible via home assistant with MPD once I get everything else figured out
I just don't have a good spot to put the turntable to use with my primary sound system
Probably darkice or icecast
@scenic radish
what's going on in the loouunggee.
well this is frustrating...

so no clue what the issue is
Permissions maybe?
yeah i've been spending the last 90 minutes or so googling
can't remember if i tried that potential solution though, thanks
yep, still the same error

this is so annoying
Group membership?
users pi and pulse are part of the audio group @wet pilot
not sure if that's what you were asking though
That's what I was thinking
The error suggests it's not listening on the network interface or port you're trying to connect to. I don't see the medium post mention anything about configuring it, nor do I see anything in the other post that mentions configuring PulseAudio
try running pacmd list-modules and see if you have module-native-protocol-tcp listed
pi@pivpn:~ $ pacmd list-modules | grep native
name: <module-native-protocol-unix>
To get PulseAudio to show listening on tcp ports, I have to add load-module module-native-protocol-tcp auth-ip-acl=127.0.0.1;YOURNETMASKHERE/24 auth-anonymous=1 into /etc/pulse/default.pa then restart pulseaudio
i'm using pulseaudio because i don't have a USB sound card like the post suggests
so i'm using a USB device that appears as an hidraw device
no dice unfortunately
it does appear now
pi@pivpn:~ $ pacmd list-modules | grep native
name: <module-native-protocol-unix>
name: <module-native-protocol-tcp>
pulseaudio does appear to be listening on 2926:

tcp6 0 0 :::22 :::* LISTEN 629/sshd

I have to poke the man page for darkice to see how that's configured. Something I can't do tonight, going cross eyed, been staring at my screen since 6am, and it's 11pm now
nope, that's the process ID. It's listening on 4713
oh ffs lol
i also am going cross-eyed
man darkice:
...
BUGS
Lots of bugs.
lmao
in your darkice config, you told it to use pulseaudio? did you specify a stream, or left the default? have you looked at pactl list? Now with pulseaudio listening on 4713, tried pointing VLC from another computer at it?
On that note, I'll let you poke, nap time for me π
Shuold be around tomorrow
thanks for the input! i did tell it to use pulseaudio, haven't checked it with VLC yet
Icecast, wow, I remember running internet radio like 20 years ago
Must have been the predecessor of icecast
trying, and failing, to make my turntable network connected
here's the current bullshit i'm dealing with: #the-water-cooler message
i've tried every potential solution i've found to no avail
it's seemingly my only option since i don't have a USB soundcard or line in
so i've connected the turntable via USB and it appears as an hidraw device
I used ALSA in days of yore, not sure if that still lives
Remember I had to kill pulse in the end while I still had a Linux desktop, to get access to ALSA
Not off the top of my head no, seems like smarter people than me have tried already
love it

it works, but it requires a few days to adjust

Now the second press closes the app
I'm curious if someone has a olimpia splendid AC unit with WiFi?
Just upgraded mine with a WiFi dongle from olimpia splendid, and it uses a APP on my mobile.
Naturally I want to integrate it in HASS, but I can't seem to find any sources that specify a API.
Been trying to reverse engineer it, but i'm kinda stuck.
Stuff found so far:
- NMAP shows Port 6444/TCP open
- Packet capture show remote server, and comms running at 1032 local
- No web interface running
Is there someone here who can push me in the right direction?
Already e-mailed Olimpia, but as expected no response.
The custom component I use for my Samsung might be tweaked for it
Also implement the pull request I submitted
As the developer is Mia
That's a nice start! Thanks
I should fork his repo and implement the fix
Because it doesn't look like he is coming back
After doing another capture, it doesn't seem to have a HTTP endpoint available.
Have to do some groceries now, but i'll get hacking later on today
@clear ferry if i buy this 5 acres i can build a shed for when you visit LOL

well of course ....he will have to share with chickens and cow but automated π€£

So like 99% of muuuuurica
yep
If haven't watched "Upload" yet, I give it a solid 7/5
is that... a special outlet to give you "better audio quality"
how the hell does a regular outlet affect audio quality
I love how audiophiles and similar equivalents in enthusiastic markets have all this "super high precision oxygen aligned geometrically balanced" stuff
And then professionals in that industry just use quality but decent interconnects or hardware
Like professional broadcast, audio engineering, even research scientists
because they are autistic
There's definitely a spectrum
most audiophiles have some major issues
Have you seen the pcie capacitor cards on AliExpress @hushed basalt ?
@half pollen @hushed basalt figured it out. i can use the ALSA input device directly...
except... the audio on the stream is much lower pitched than it should be lmao
That is what I said basically, but just not @scenic radish
not playing a record ATM so it's not a speed issue
Wtf is a capacitor card
Havent heard of Legion actually
Is it a capacitor to shunt joules back into your PCI-E bus

Hmmm
Well, to be fair, that's a lot more plausible than magic power outlets
DC noise are real things
Whether that device does anything beneficially is another question
Personally I'd be looking for my DACs to do their own isolation, not worrying about trying to make the rails perfect DC
Why did we move to 48k anyway?
Bigger is better?
In this case theoretically marginally better, but also causes huge problems with the what I'm assuming is the older standard of 44.1
Don't worry, 56K will be long soon π
Maybe it has something to do with syncing it to 24Hz video
It's more a question of why did we go to 44.1
I know why, but 44.1 is the abomination, noy 48
But by the time we got 48, 44.1 was already well established. But it does seem like this is necessary for n*24Hz video. Just unfortunate we still haven't gotten rid of 44.1 then
This also seems to get very complicated with NTSC
Video was established at 25/30 for a long time before 24fps video came out
Film has been 24fps for a long time though
44.1 is just for cds but to be honest who cares about cds anymore
50 and 60 is more accurate, but yeah
I know but for syncing on the display you'd be showing 50Hz (PAL) or 60Hz (NTSC)
We don't like to speak of the interlaced era
interlaced is still very much in use
and it's rather ingenious way of limiting bandwidth
Everything not moving is shown at full resolution and everything that's moving and harder for our brain to see properly is rendered at half resolution
Hehe, yeah
About the 44/48 I found an article on it and apparently 60k would have been the best of all worlds:
"Many in the U.S. television industry liked 60 kHz as a standard sample rate because it was free of leap frames and split frequencies, and it synchronized readily with all timing signals used in 60 Hz and 50 Hz television systems, 24 Hz film and the 13.5 MHz component digital video sample rate. The professional audio industry, however, considered it wastefully high, and there was a quantity of 48 kHz software extant in Europe. "
I hate people who put their TVs on maximum smooth mode π€’
@clear ferry what smooth mode you are talking about? Is that an option?
Certainly here most TVs in the last ... 10+ years have had that option
I turn it off π
Frame interpolation. Uses magic to make 24fps content look like it was filmed in 120fps
It has it's uses but only because we no longer use the superior CRT and Plasma displays that never needed it.
I have a few options - sports mode and non-sports mode...etc. the sports mode has higher frame rate, and others lower. Other than that, I got no more options. Just color and sound settings.
@hushed basalt audiofile stuff usually first requirements is more money than common sense but ...i may fit at the lower end of that

ok thanks
This a decent deal? Looking to upgrade from a pi 3B+ https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07T5DTNPS/ref=cm_sw_r_other_apa_i_67STEbG888R4Q
And it takes a 2.5" HDD/SSD
I'd say it's a good deal
It's not going to be lightning fast, but way better than that Pi
Yeah I figured it wouldn't be screaming but definitely just looking for a bump up in power. I'd really just like an "actual" machine
That price aint bad
Especially since I don't need to wait weeks lol
Emmc is reliable enough for decent storage too, my Chromebook has it
Doing it. Not looking forward to setting everything up again but oh well
It takes an SSD
Migrating isn't that bad ... mostly
I don't have too much stuff running, plus I can copy over config files
I'm using an SSD with my pi so I'll probably transfer that over
But yeah I could try it out without it first I suppose
Lot of China commercials in the ads though
I got like 6 RPis that I don't use... I need to find where all those needy children are
Hi I just started with hone assistant. I out hassio on a raspberry pi 3 that I had and I want to replace wink with HA. Iβm looking to find a good z-wave dongle for my Schlage door locks and I need to figure out if the other wink accessories like the motion sensor and alarm can be moved over too. Iβm interested in how to back up all the configurations and maybe using ansible with this.
Ansible and the "Hassio" image won't play well
#zwave-archived can advise on Z-Wave, #zigbee-archived for your Zigbee devices, and #hardware-archived for everything else
My quick research earlier today says that most things should work, except for Lutron Clear Connect
I feel like I've graduated or something after buying the mini PC
Is there a maximum supported python version for HA? Is 3.7.7 ok?
That's fine
3.8 is fine too, though not all packages are available for it
That's more a #672217570283094017 topic though π
Ok, then I'm running out of ideas for how to figure out why the install keeps failing...which is the best channel to ask in, I've tried scouring the web and understanding the errors. I'm sad now
Not sure which install you're using? If you have add-ons, or see references to either Hass.io or Supervisor, then you're using #330944238910963714. If you're running natively in Docker or in a venv then you have the #672217570283094017 install method
Sounds like you want to ask in #672217570283094017 since you're asking about Python versions, but ... π€·
Which guide are you following?
If it's not one of the official ones expect to be given a π€¦ π
I'm following the official one for installing on python3 on a separate user
but when I run pip3 install homeassistant it fails, so just curious where I should ask
That's #672217570283094017
cool, yea that one. Thank you!
Here's one needy kid Skalavala ποΈ Need to build a navigation system for the boat and maybe add some smexy automation too
I'm using an Aotec Z-Stick. Works well for me...
Another needy child here. RPi's are always in demand... π
@orchid rose you are in Finland, it will take a while before you get the shipment from USA. I will be glad to send you a couple of RPIs. Just DM me your address!
Oh, I said needy. I meant to say lazy... π I'd probably pay more in taxes and tariffs than it costs to buy one from a store....
You have to pay taxes when you get the shipment?
Yeah, VAT which is 24%
Holy crap!!! We donβt have that in the USA. I remember long time ago I sent a really good wrist watch to my brother in UK. I spent about $800 on it and he had to pay like 350 GBP to get the item! What a waste of money! Never sent him anything after that!
He came over here and bought stuff like crazy.
Yep, it's quite a bit higher here than there. It should also include stuff you buy and bring yourself but the customs often turn a blind eye to that. For some stuff there are also tariffs when imported from outside the EU but for electronics it is 0%.
Crazy how each country taxes citizens differently
Just mark as gift and set value to $1
Heya
Ludeeus, they seem to scan those here and check if there's anything that looks valuable. Most of the stuff that I've ordered that had some value were caught up by the customs office and then it's your responsibility to send them the paperwork of how much it actually cost or what the actual value of the item is. Bicycle frame from China and a DSLR from the US were among those.
Really?? π±
I've never had issues with that
I have never had anything except the roborock stopped in customs
Thank God, I live in a free country where I don't have to pay VAT taxes and import duties... I just have to pay 50% of my income for tax - that's all!
Ooof I'm glad I only pay 33%
Can't get much higher either, even if I doubled my income
Actual picture of @forest edge https://redd.it/de3ff1
that kid looks like the kid in The Kid movie by Charlie Chaplin π
fantastic movie!!!
It's ironic that arguably the most loved silent era movie figure is also responsible for one of the greatest speeches in movie history.
yup! the ending speech is the best speech ever!
Timo tolkki used the speech in a song too
Which is why I know of the movie
Great album btw https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hymn_to_Life_(album)?wprov=sfla1
I wouldn't know, I have better taste in music than that
Anyone know how I can make ifttt save images I tweet to dropbox automatically?
Ifttt π€’
I just need a way to save screenshots from my nintendo switch to my pc easily
instead of having to go to twitter.com to download them by hand
Isn't gringo means American or something?

I'm so happy, the Budweiser WASSSSAAAAAAAAA ad has been re-released! A whole new generation of thousands annoying each other π
Gotta love when people ask what I use for things like wifi and plex. Then ask how much as if they are going to go set it up.... Yes go out and buy a full unifi setup because your provider gave you a shit wifi router that cant cover your 2 bedroom apartment,
...for now
Itβs just gearing up for the second wave @hushed basalt
Yeah until they open everything back up
NSW still has plenty
I wonder how many transmissions were during scomos Hillsong conference and football
It's the same here mostly. Seven cases in 14 days last I checked
I think we've had 1 or 2 new cases in 14 days
Plenty I would imagine. I live in the country and people have relaxed way too much judging by the masses out and about yesterday (I had to do groceries)
Yep
Still uncertainty in businesses
Yeah saying βleave it up to the statesβ for reopening is passing the buck imo
Whatβs the point of having a country if the national leaders canβt tackle a national problem π€£
I'll never ever buy a Samsung smart TV ever again
There is no volume control for any external audio outputs other then the default speaker
Need fo do a chronological montage of scomo press releases vs state premiere press releases. See how differently he reacted to them
Wow that's annoying
I think mine is the same though?
Shouldn't volume control be a basic thing? Like my android can change volume for Bluetooth deviced and such
I'm pretty sure that's typucal
With commercial options you'll always be somewhat limited on what you can do Tuxabyte. I wouldn't blame it just on Samsung, although I've done so myself with some other manufacturers...
Do you happen to know how I could fix volume control?
I got a media server with dac on rpi connected to active speakers
I have no samsung devices or a TV at all. Some here probably do though
I use a broadlink to control the volume on the soundbar
My tv has an IR blaster in it to control devices
I don't want to buy a separate device for basic volume control
You may have to
Your raspberry pi is your speakers?
Yes
Yamaha speakers attached to pi trough a dac hifiberry
Pretty solid setup it's running moode
Or is it possible to change media output on a Chromecast device?
Can't you plug your tv directly into an amp
I might, but I have it already plugged into my rpi
Does it have multiple inputs
Nope only analogue
Wouldn't Bluetooth to raspberry pi to DAC be delayed as hell
Anyways if you're willing to look at an AVR amp that has all the features to do something like that
Hmmm I just thought of something
The dac on my pi can control volume with alsamixer
I could ssh and change volume?
Yes you could.
Sound control trough alsa fixed it for now :)
I have a nice Snapcast setup where one of the Pi Zero doing the work was doing BT to a JV Hifi. Latency was silly on the BT compared to the normal DACs (HifiBerry DAC+ Zero).
The thing is, depending on what you want to do, that can be quite acceptable! Snapcast can compensate for such latency.
any of you genius's know how to make little momentary buttons work like latch buttons in esphome?
or am I just trying to do something crazy?
Ffs, discord just can't stop dicking around with the app lol
I've used snapcast for a number of years for my home TTS before I switched to Sonos. Snapcast does great with many different sources of inputs.
@clear ferry this is probably the solution to the issue you were having with the new discord app update
Hmm, the Reddit thread about killing the install script wasn't as much of a shit show as I was expecting
Top kek
I thought it was pretty clear but still some confusion. Maybe a podcast would help like the yaml stuff
one day.. I will be less lazy but today.. is not that day
wut u mean?
@wild grove you're welcome for setting you up for that message with 6+ reactions π
i saw you typing π
Hahaha lol. Thanks!
