ruby mauve
#

I've been looking into Intel NUCs, and just a J4105 (and J5005) motherboard (due to 4 SATA ports).. or maybe the AsRock A300 - But I worry a bit about the wattage on that, and only has 2 SATA. Would be nice to one day replace my NAS with it, but even then 4 SATA is pushing it.

Idea is to make a couple of VMs for Pi-hole, Ubiquiti, Home Assistant, and some other bits. It'd just be on a shelf somewhere, mostly ignored physically.

Would like something with an m.2 for OS, and 4-6x SATA.

Have been looking at HomeLab, HomeServer, and all those other Reddits - Most of the time they just end up going "But get this 90-500W server, it's great!". Sadly electricity is ~€0.33 kWh here, a server like that would double my yearly usage.

Essentially just replace all my small shattered units, NAS, NAS, Nvidia Shield, RPi, etc., and combining them into one - I don't need loads of power, neither of those above really does much more than the Pi.
... also I'd be able to use the 3B+ for my 3D printer :p

#

.. that was more text than I was aiming for.

boreal pewter
#

Intel nucs suck

clever mortar
#

My home server is nominally 450W, and idles at significantly less (under 50W)

ruby mauve
#

They're fine for low power and small footprint and all such.. but expandability is near 0

#

But no m.2. And 2018 tech.

boreal pewter
#

Im in germany, we also pay a lot for electricity. I built a Deskmini A300 with Ryzen 5 3400g and Set my electricity to 2800kwh

orchid rose
#

most nucs only have one sata as well, right?

ruby mauve
#

Well.. Is Intel.. So 2012 tech with a lot of plusses

#

Aye, 1 SATA, some has 1 m.2 + 1 SATA (and I think I saw one with 2 SATA, don't hold me up on that though).

boreal pewter
#

Deskmini has 2 m2 + 2 sata

#

And again you dont need much local storage

#

It's 2020

#

Cloud called

clever mortar
#

You could build your own relatively easily, that's what I did. There's no shortage of cases out there that'll do for a NAS (hot swap etc), and then you can add a motherboard (and if necessary PCIe card) that suits

ruby mauve
#

I like the deskmini, I worry a bit about idle being +20-30W though. Was thinking the 200-240G, or maybe the 3000G.

#

Yeah, I don't really like having my data in the cloud :)

#

Is why NAS NAS! :D

boreal pewter
#

That's retarded

ruby mauve
#

That is your opinion, and you're free to have it.

#

I don't like Google (etc.) having the option to leak and look into my data.

orchid rose
#

disks will use quite a bit of power as well iirc

clever mortar
#

It's perfectly valid to not want to store your data on the cloud

ruby mauve
#

I prefer leaking it myself :D

boreal pewter
#

The cloud is probably much more secure for dataloss than your 10 local copies and it is YOU who has to encrypt it

#

Simple

clever mortar
#

Cloud is great, if you have the bandwidth for it, and reliability

ruby mauve
#

Yeah, I know @orchid rose. Most of the time they're not spinning though.

clever mortar
#

For the other 95% of the world, not so much 😉

ruby mauve
#

I'm very aware of what the Cloud is, you don't have to explain - Is fine.

#

Also, none of my NAS'es got internet access anyhow. So, it'd be physically stealing it.. And so be it. I've accepted that. Or fire or whatever.

boreal pewter
#

If you dont encrypt you still dont need to argue about security at all

ruby mauve
#

In either case, Cloud is not what my question was about ^^

boreal pewter
#

Deskmini is still better than any NUC

orchid rose
#

Modern cpus are pretty good with power savings. Are you sure about the 20-30W in idle?

ruby mauve
#

And I know, Deskmini has 2x m2, and 2x SATA. But also lacks any possibility of expanding (though I did see a m.2 to 5x SATA adapter, weird one that.

clever mortar
#

I'd have a browse of https://www.mini-itx.com/store/ to get ideas of the possibilities of building your own. The form factor is generally pretty low power, and you can spec it really low power

boreal pewter
#

You can put some icybox via USB 3.1 at it

#

However deskmini is no storage box

ruby mauve
#

I've been looking at so many reviews and wattage and what not else, your average J4105-5005ish NUC idles at 6-12W, the DeskMini with a 3200G was ~30W on the wall.

#

And yeah, building my own is why I looked into just getting something like the AsRock J5005-ITX motherboard, and going from there. ^^

orchid rose
#

oof, that's a pretty big difference

ruby mauve
#

Yeah, and keep in mind - It only really has to replace a RPI3b+, I don't need the massive power that a Ryzen may offer me.

#

I did for a while think of replacing my 1800X with a 3950X, and using the 1800X in that server.. Buuuuut.. I'd never be using that power.

#

And yeah, I really love what the DeskMini has to offer, been looking into it several times ^^

#

Oh yeah, and all of these lacks ECC support, which kind of sucks as well (DeskMini included, though Ryzen supports it)..

clever mortar
#

If you can get a board that supports low power CPUs that's worth looking at. They cost a bit more, but they run a lot cooler, draw less power, and generate less heat

boreal pewter
#

Well if you have a low end usage just use low end components. I think i just saw yesterday or so a Deal for a refurbished i3 Desktop for 79€ here in germany

ruby mauve
#

I did look into the Epyc 3105-3151, which looked REALLY interesting.. Just.. Can't find them anywhere. (4-16c).

#

Issue with i3 is the same as with the DeskMini (except for more ports) - wattage.

#

And there's the Atom 16c CPUs.. like, 16 bad cores.. But I'm not entirely sure about that.

#

Maybe I'm just asking for too much :p Just need to learn to settle.

boreal pewter
#

SC Apps die there

clever mortar
#

The Asus P10S-I supports 25W CPUs

#

You'll find lots of similar options out there if you look beyond just desktop motherboards

clear ferry
#

Low power usage 🤢

clever mortar
#

My own server has a 25W Xeon...

ruby mauve
#

I've been trying - and while I'm a massive nerd in the desktop computing hardware market, then server-like stuff is things I've not spent too much time with, which is probably where I'm having issues ^^

Did also look into a HP E ProLiant MicroServer Gen10.. But they use AMD Piledriver-generation tech, just feels ancient by now :p

clear ferry
#

Gotta get that 400w tdp @clever mortar

clever mortar
#

I like a low noise home server 😉

ruby mauve
#

My PC does fine with hitting those 400W+, and keeping my apartment all nice and warm during winter -- I don't need it from my closet-server as well ;D

ruby mauve

I really do like that machine, small and sexy.

When Alec asked Tesla customer support about this, this was their response:

Tesla has recent identified instances of customers being incorrectly configured for Autopilot versions that they did not pay for. Since, there was an audit done to correct these instances. Your vehicle is one of the vehicles that was incorrectly configured for Autopilot. We looked back at your purchase history and unfortunately Full-Self Driving was not a feature that you had paid for. We apologize for the confusion. If you are still interested in having those additional features we can begin the process to purchase the upgrade.

In all fairness on the Tesla issue… Those driving functions are being actively developed, which means ongoing cost to Tesla — which from what I've heard, is struggling a bit more than most of it's competition. I'm not saying they need the money, Elon could just give toss his weed budget into the company and it'd be fine. But, you shouldn't be surprised that an actively evolving feature is leased, and likewise, for it to be pulled, if you haven't paid for it. What exactly are you expecting to happen on the next bug fix? Do you expect then to patch the bugs, separately from adding new features, just to support you who isn't even paying for the feature? I don't like the transition, myself, but… I also don't see a better alternative.

I see lots of reports that the big commercial vpns are not trustworthy, has anybody some recommendations? I would like to go with Protonvpn but I have not figured out how I really want it to be setup, in general I would like to turn it on/off on demand...

wet pilot
#

could probably get a cheap vps somewhere and run your own 😛

dusky plank
#

true that ^^
but I have no experience what country would be best suited / if my traffic is really protected then...
I mean, I have to pay the vps somehow...

#

can somebody recommend me a vps somewhere? 😄

scenic radish
#

i run pivpn lol

peak breach
#

Running your own is the only way to have a safe VPN. That said, ExpressVPN I think it is, claim they're unable to log your connections, or something? And have been 3rd party verified, yada yada yada. Not sure I entirely believe, and even if it's true, a "do not discuss" warrant can still change that at any time.

dusky plank
#

@peak breach thanks for the info, but since I am in the EU I believe Protonvpn (based in Switzerland) is still a solid choice for me... it's the same company as protonmail if you know anything about them...
but yeah, I would love to run a vps on my own but where? I found some cheap ones in Ukraine but I believe there are better ones 😄

scenic radish
#

buy a pi and install pivpn

dusky plank
#

I believe just running a vps on hetzner in germany in combination with protonvpn would be the best option for me, albeit a bit expensive

@scenic radish can I send you the ssh password and you help me setup the addon? plz 😄

forest edge

I had a friend who's uncle that had one of those expensive gas rc helicopters. was like every other sentence had something to do with how expensive it was and fragile it was lol

tidal bronze
#

yep you fix more than you fly. But that's how people should start so they respect these things. Not rely on GPS/Vision position hold. Lol

forest edge
#

lol

steel urchin
#

most drones are a joke, because they have auto stabilizing typically built into the controllers... but if you look into the racing sector (and others), they typically race without stabilization, so it's literally fully controlled by them

tidal bronze
#

yes AKA rate flying 🙂

forest edge
#

the concept of ai drone flying is neat, but then the concept of ai controlling anything is neat. the only reason I'd ever considered buying a drone was to be able to survey my farm while sitting on my ass but with the range i needed ect it just wasn't cost effective lol

#

if I had i would have tried like hell to do some some kind ai sweep lol

tidal bronze
#

Fixed wing would be the answer. We don't use multirotors for large areas. They suck at energy management. You can do about 80 acres in 40 minutes with a plane.

odd hill
#

Hey guys. What's everyone using for ZLL control? Smart Things, Hue Gateway, or something else?

Use case is Gledopo RGBCCT controller if that helps narrow down the responses.

forest edge
#

yea but your limited with a plane on what you can see, i needed to be able to look at fence lines ect

odd hill
#

Will do. 🍆

tidal bronze
#

If you take control you can fly pretty low. Loads of farms use them for precision ag

forest edge
#

they able to fly that slow?

tidal bronze
#

Not slow. Low. Lol

forest edge
#

most planes I seen are always zipping through

#

lol well even low, not sure how they see breaks in fencing lol

tidal bronze
#

Depends how skilled you are.

forest edge
#

I guess if you got akeen eye lol

#

ag i bet they only look at the crops ect

tidal bronze
#

AG uses it not for fence lines. Lol NDVI soil moisture over/under fertilization

forest edge
#

yea, see i rent out to the farmers, i could give two shits about the crop condition.. only care about the border line, pond conditions and buildings lol

tidal bronze

Then large slow rpm multi would be the answer for you. They run 40 to 70 minutes.

forest edge

I thought they ran for like 2 hours?

@boreal pewter
Say Anon. You mentioned you had theA300 DeskMini. Ever had a problem with it where attaching the backplate causes it to refuse to boot?
I did go out grabbing one of them, after I found a m.2 to 5x SATA adapter - in case I want more drives. However, it's been a complete pain to work on.

Put cooler on top - no backplate, just resting - After 10-30 tries you get it to boot, and after it's booted the first time it consistently boots - however, that first time has to be with 1 stick of RAM, after that first boot you can do another. I've reseated everything, cleared CMOS, battery out, etc.

Put backplate back on, and all progress is wiped.
Even managed to install Proxmox on it just fine, after I got it up. Backplate on - Nada.

Urgh. Think this thing is going back to the store. Oh, also, getting the CPU out requires a razorblade, pretty sure the release mechanism is borked.

brisk glen
#

@ruby mauve ever considered one of your sticks is bad or slightly out of spec for that board?

With or without RAM, the front LED doesn't even turn on, zero activity. Once the LED lights up it works fine, and memtest showed nothing (proxmox).

Sure, I have moved on to scp for firmware on switches though

#

🤢

#

But tftp is very hardy

#

And atleast it doesn't give you full admin in most implementations lmao

SSH is calling

amber bramble
#

I have to interface with a lighting control system for stage lighting... it has a telnet interface you can connect to and issue commands or query

clear ferry
#

SSH started calling 20 years ago

amber bramble
#

each command returns data in a different format and it doesn't escape things

#

so if you have a scene programmed in it with a "-" in the name all kinds of stuff breaks because "-" is the delimiter in the list of active scenes

brisk glen
#

🤢

amber bramble
#

and it tells you it's done sending data for a command with a blank line, but there's other places where it will use a blank line in the middle of the output...

brisk glen
#

Get your Chinese vendor out of here... I deal with enough of their A/V bullshit at work

#

What do you mean the serial number is not burned into the A/V switch?

#

The things I see....

forest edge
#

amber bramble
#

boreal pewter
#

@ruby mauve no had no trouble. I have the best cooler around for it, the Noctua one

#

Mh Sound like you got a package hero there

ruby mauve
#

Wasn't so much the cooling parts of it, it was mostly just the whole "backplate = no boot" part of it - Noctua or not ;)

steel urchin
#

@amber bramble I had to do some handling of similar fashioned data. It sucked, had to have a small buffer to compare, and a message TTY so messages weren't caught up in said buffer
