It is very alien to most

Only language it is related to is Hungarian

midnight adder

not true - estonian is very close to finnish

i've never studied estonian but I can somewhat parse it when reading

clear ferry

True, but it isn't really a seperate language imo, it is like saying Swedish and Norwegian is different, I would rather say variations ๐Ÿ˜›

#

Semantics though

midnight adder
#

the main thing that causes problems for ango-germanic speakers with finnish is that it is an agglutinative language

clear ferry
#

All the different Kasus is what gets me

#

Other than that it is quite easy to read at times

midnight adder
#

meaning that instead of using prepositions, there are postpositions added on to the end of words and there are 17 cases so an infinite number of postpositions can be added on to any word

with english, your mind can parse in binary mode. with finnish, it requires bayesian parsing mode.

#

But... No Amazon prime

#

How will i buy moderately priced goods with 5 day "free" delivery

light trout
#

We don't, we overpay and wait too long

clear ferry
#

We don't even have Amazon non prime

#

But now they have started shipping some stuff here

light trout
#

That will probably ends now, when they have to compute taxes before the sale

hushed basalt
#

Amazon is an interesting beast

#

A seller pays the storage fees, packing and shipping fees,

#

And then amazon charges a user the shipping fees as well

#

Unless they pay amazon for "free shipping"

orchid rose
#

Why doesn't Amazon deliver to Norway? You are in ETA, right?

hushed basalt
#

I miss like 5 years ago

#

Usd was worth 0.90 aud

#

No gst/imports under $1000

light trout
#

We have some strange import rules, which most foreign companies don't want to comply with

hushed basalt
#

So you could buy like $1050 of stuff from US without paying US state tax, imports or gst fees

#

Now it's like 70 cents to the usd. And there's GST and fees

light trout
#

Our limit for that was $35, now it's $0 :/

hushed basalt
#

So $500 usd becomes $850 aud very quickly

orchid rose
#

I thought you couldn't add any of that stuff in the ETA but I guess it's just EU then

hushed basalt
#

Yeah ours is $0

Maybe Norwat just needs to become an island state :D

And it is vague what products really

#

I read two different government documents

#

And I still don't understand if random goods from AliExpress are affected

hushed basalt
#

The sellers have to collect the tax here

#

So if you buy something from amazon.com, amazon charges you the taxes

#

Unless it's over $1000 aud value, then it's just.. expensive

#

Can easily be a good 20-25% on top

clear ferry
#

Mostly anything to Norway of value will be minimum 25 on top

hushed basalt
#

Lovely

#

I'm sure your local retailers and distributors have loopholes to minimize the tax

#

Or eliminate it

#

Plus their volume and trade discounts

#

It's likely they pay $35 for something they sell to you for $100.

orchid rose

the VAT in Norway is 25% so there's not much you can do to go around that other than to sell from outside of the trade area and hope the customs don't tax it

valid halo
#

Happy 1920 everyone!

static plinth
#

So guess what, I found out that my utility has a really easy alternate rate structure that I can gain with my home assistant install

#

I think it'll help me achieve a 35% reduction in my electric bill without really changing any obvious thing up as far as my habits go

valid halo
#

35% O_O

#

๐Ÿ‘€

#

๐Ÿ˜ฎ

static plinth
#

Yeah that's like an extra $40 a month in my pocket

valid halo
#

๐Ÿ‘

#

That's a nice New Year Suprise

static plinth
#

So for 10% of the month my rate increases 400%

proper swift
#

how does homeassistant change your rate structure?

static plinth
#

And for 90% it goes down 50%

#

I have a Z-Wave energy meter in my electric service panel

#

As well as a 40 amp controller on the electric water heater

proper swift
#

oh, homeasssitant "hacks" your rate structure. ๐Ÿ™‚

static plinth
#

Plus I smart plug on my refrigerator and dehumidifier which runs all the time

#

The peak. Is only 3 hours so I can turn off my fridge and fill the insides with some thermal Mass if I need to

#

So I force all the heavy appliances and my thermostat to throttle down for 3 hours a day during the week and avoid that high rate

proper swift
#

the holy grail for me has always been to see if I could take all the devices off auto, and have automation control on/off so no two large loads caused a peak.

static plinth
#

I've been doing that on this off grid house in order to get the house to operate within the parameters of the system and I've been thinking about how to monetize it and it's just a surprise that my own power company I can get a real good pay back on

#

But it Fox with the rest of the Z-Wave Network cuz it's so much data so there's that

proper swift
#

the problem I have is the AC.. i'd have to keep adjusting it up and down on the multiple units to let each one run.. thats a pretty complex setup

static plinth
#

usually the time of rate structure is around where I live or design simply to increase your electric bill and not to decrease it so it's a pleasant surprise

#

Well if you have a Z-Wave thermostat

#

Then you just program it to run the temperature up, it's just for 3 hours and you can super drive it right before

proper swift
#

oh, yeah.. the times here are hideous. no Ihave a controllable one.. I just mean I'd have to basically write a thermostat backend that measured the house at different points and used it to control all 3

static plinth
#

But yeah in general I'd say you have to go around the air conditioning loads rather than try and synchronize them

proper swift
#

yeah well, thats pointless because it's 99% of the problem

static plinth
#

these relays are current sensing so you actually can prevent them from turning on if another one is running and so you just have to have them get in line at that point, a condition on the automation

proper swift
#

essentially, each AC unit is like.. 4k watts. I have 3. if they sync, its $$.

static plinth
#

Yup. Real hard on batteries too

proper swift
#

I think I can do it eventually.. it's just hard.

#

for my problem, the refrigerator is just noise. ๐Ÿ™‚

static plinth
#

Yeah I'm going to see how it goes coasting the air condition for 3 hours a day straight

#

Total savings could be as much as 50%, minus the fixed fees

#

the higher-end air conditioner units nowadays really don't like it when you kill their power supply either they be but you and send out all kinds of alerts

clear ferry
#

I need to smarten up my old heat pump

#

That'll save me some money per year

#

Probably the biggest energy thief in the house

static plinth
#

Here's my question for you gargle do you think you could go three hours without using your mini splits at all, if you're running them full blast for the hour prior

clear ferry
#

Can't go too long without the heat pump here in winter atleast, especially when it is -30c outside PedoBearD

proper swift
#

so I have detailed measurements during the summer. The heat rises FAST

#

What I used to do was over-run them leading up to the rate change, and then coast. I could make it a few hours in, and then it got bad. and it got bad right when we got home, so it was kinda non-ideal

#

I mean, is it livable, sure. But my wife would be unhappy, and so would I really.. so.. I need a better way.

#

I live in Phoenix

#

When it's 115 out, you have to actively fight that. What is actually terrifying is watching the voltage on the mains drop to near brownout as the heat rises.....

static plinth
#

Sounds like both of you are on opposite extremes. In Phoenix it regularly gets up to a hundred and sixty F on the roof

#

Rather than killing the AC you could set it to a much higher temperature and that would buy you some extra time

hidden cradle
#

so who wants to set up HA for me while I take a nap?

raven ember
#

Murf, are you familiar with Tuya Convert?

wheat canyon
#

do I just have to unplug that cap and wire it into the the same connector type?

#

hmm I've heard the name but never read up on it much, @raven ember

tidal bronze
#

As for aqara, do use a few of them with conbee and deconz, just another gateway. You can take the zigbee to mqtt route as well.

#

@raven ember seen any 6" downlight with gimbal that supports tuya ?

wheat canyon
#

so if I do the zigbee to mqtt I could just skip buying their hub? okay. Those sensors seem good but I wasn't sure. Finding things on aliexpress I always feel like I'm buying something in the back of an alley

tidal bronze
#

Yes you can skip their hub

wheat canyon
#

is Tuya for the light setup?

tidal bronze
raven ember
#

Ali-Express ~= AlleyExpress

wheat canyon
#

exactly haha

tidal bronze
#

actually 6" RGBCW downlight with gimbal

raven ember
#

So Murf, nutshell: Out of the box you rely on the Tuya cloud service to control those lights. Someone has documented how to trick them to load a 3rd party software like Tasmota or EspHome and let you control them on your local network with no cloud.

wheat canyon
#

agh, okay I see.

raven ember
#

How you want to do it is up to you. Most people prefer as much local control as possible

wheat canyon
#

yeah for sure that, I just like home-assistant for the fact I can centralize controls. my Nest thermostat for that reason might be on the way out after I migrated and now can't get it back on hass

raven ember
#

You may want to just get one and fiddle with it, see if you can make it behave in a way you're happy. Otherwise, Amazon returns are awesome

wheat canyon
#

okay sounds like a good idea. doing all of my 6 inch lights that i got too bright of white and did not return in time might not be worth with the price per light too I guess. I'm not that obsessed with color light parties to need to replace.

raven ember
#

Quad apparently likes to party. I'm going with white dome trims for my 6" cans and color tuneable BR30 bulbs

#

Are your "too bright" lights wifi dimable?

wheat canyon
#

my stupid flat roof house from the 70s has no space between the ceilings. Only way I could get recessed were these slim ones. but they are dimmable it still is just, awful. haha feels like im at an office building with how white they are.

raven ember
#

Ah, they're too bright of white Kelvin-wise

wheat canyon
#

yep 5k are the ones I really hate.

#

some are 4k that im not super thrilled but are better.

tidal bronze
#

@raven ember ๐Ÿ™‚ Not all the time but, easy to have them ready when the need arises. BTW flashed 2 x LOHAS BR30 last night as well. I think I am done for now.

wheat canyon
#

A few of the 6" ones hate the inovelli zwave switches for some reason too and blink a little when dimmed.

raven ember
#

Yeah, I wouldn't be happy without at least color-tunable bulbs (2700K-6500K)

wheat canyon
#

yeah for sure just sucks for example those 4" ones. a 4 pack I would need is the same price for 1 of the RGBW ones

steel urchin
#

haven't seen you guys since last decade o/

raven ember
#

Quad, did you see the update to Tasmota 8.x?

#

"Change Smoother Fade using 100Hz instead of 20Hz animation"

tidal bronze
#

Oh no. Not yet. Fade is not great as it is compared to z-wave. Did you try it out?

raven ember
#

No, I'm getting my test BR30 out now

tidal bronze
#

Right on.

#

2 x BR30 getting installed tomorrow, so I will wait for your results ๐Ÿ™‚

raven ember
#

I think most of the reason Fade isn't as good on some of these is that LIFX and Philips use a hardware PWM... and these are software PWM

#

So here's hoping

wheat canyon
#

do you guys order some of the lights you do the tasmota stuff with from alixp too? or amazon

tidal bronze

Yep. You can see the ramp stepping/notch when close to the bulbs. I hate that

Z-Wave: Up to 232 devices. The controller counts toward the total number of devices on the network; in other words, up to 231 devices could be connected with a single SmartThings Hub.
ZigBee: ZigBee networks do not have a concrete limit on the number of devices. Some users may have hundreds of devices, or more, on a single network. However, larger networks will require wireless repeaters to ensure connectivity and optimal signal range and strength.

forest edge
#

I remember someone saying zigbee was some small number like 20ish

steel urchin
#

we don't have many neighbors yet, 5 houses down someone came over and asked me to turn it down during my testing

scenic radish
#

some people here have like 50+ zigbee devices on their networks

forest edge
#

maybe but maybe they have to have those on seperate mesh

scenic radish
#

maybe whoever said that was talking about smartthings which has a 32 device limit

forest edge
#

oh i dunnop, just remember someone talking about it

scenic radish
#

oh nvm

#

i misread that

forest edge
#

either way not buying a zigbee stick to use ikea lol

scenic radish
#

well whoever told you is a liar

#

i mean, it opens up the possibility to use other devices too

forest edge
#

whats the averag polling rate?

#

cause if they are slow to poll..

scenic radish
#

no clue, depends on device

#

some push updates immediately

#

others are polled

forest edge
#

I wonder if it's adjustable

hushed basalt
#

All the devices push I believe

#

Unless they have actions, like a motion sensor

#

Then they just push on action

scenic radish
#

ah right, nvm

hushed basalt
#

Other than some low level background telemetry is my guess

forest edge
#

can you adjust the rate on ones that would report crap like temps ect?

scenic radish
#

they're still probably polled though if they haven't pushed anything in a while probably not for sleepy devices, nvm

#

that would also probably depend on device

forest edge
#

thats what i like about wifi and mqtt, i can adjust those

scenic radish
#

i need to go to bed lol

hushed basalt
#

Zigbee2mqtt is mqtt

forest edge

I asked this on the #330944238910963714, but perhaps its more appropriate in the #the-water-cooler: Can anyone point me to a good reference to learn how to set up a subnetwork to use for Home Assistant and all of my home automation devices? I just used professor google to learn a lot about what ip addresses and subnet masks are, but I still can't figure out HOW best to set up my network to create separate subnets for general use and home automation. Thanks.

You know.... I can sit here building computer systems for myself and others, replace parts, tinker with electronics, find work arounds on otherwise restricted systems, teach myself the basics of networking, even change a couple of lines of code or track down nearly-impossible information... Then I browse something as simple as the lounge area here for 5 minutes and I feel like you guys are the Rick to my Morty.... I am a total and complete pleb lol. I look at some of what you're talking about and I'm like....

#

I really need to learn some coding language(s)...

#

I am seriously interested in learning about RPI as well

#

I've looked into Khan Academy and others, just a matter of finding the time...

forest edge
#

learn python that's pretty simple

proven tangle
#

Correct me if I'm wrong... Py(thon) is what's used primarily on RPi?

forest edge
#

it's just a language it's not specific to the rpi but most things that run on an rpi are linux based thus python can be ran/used. Course with that said you can run python pretty much anything

proven tangle
#

hmmm... I will look further into this, thank you

java FTW

proven tangle

I thought Java was slowly being phased out, I know it's a great language

nah

it's pretty much THE enterprise language

forest edge

java is slightly harder to learn

steel urchin
#

mmmm javascript is up there as well

but java has been around long enough to not go away any time soon

A couple of years ago when I was big on the online gaming (GTA5/FiveM ftw)....... LUA was the big thing... From what I could tell, it was very similar to basic HTML

But again, LUA I believe is more game-focused.

I would love to have the knowledge to write some actual purpose-built programs

HTML is the #1 easiest language to learn lol

it's markup

it's classified as one

hypertext markup language

like i said, poorly named

css is more of a language since it has variables and functions

forest edge

didn't use to be

#

css has sure come a long way

unreal orbit
#

Considering it is a markup language I don't see how it's poorly named.

steel urchin
#

because it's actually classified differently by computer science and basic terminology

#

it's not Markup. Language.

#

it's Markup Language

#

not Programming Language

forest edge
#

it's still classified as such

steel urchin
#

no it's not

forest edge
#

maybe not by your eyes

unreal orbit
#

nobody said it was a programming language anyway

#

HTML is the #1 easiest language to learn lol

steel urchin
#

or anyone that does programming, or involved in computer science

forest edge
#

it's a language none the less

#

I do alot of php and get made fun sometimes cause many don't see it as a language either lol

steel urchin
#

In computer text processing, a markup language is a system for annotating a document in a way that is syntactically distinguishable from the text. The idea and terminology evolved from the "marking up" of paper manuscripts (i.e., the revision instructions by editors), which i...

proven tangle

I made a cat on the beach one time in HTML

forest edge

I don't remember no made in notepad

steel urchin
#

python is also popular

#

.net pays decently but i hate the platform

#

javascript has been on the rise the last 10ish years

#

embedded is great for niche stuff (atms, coke machines, etc)

forest edge
#

python is pretty much a pretty rounded language to start learning, tend to find more uses for it in more areas than alot of the others

steel urchin
#

i say just pick a language, and build something... starting is the hard part

forest edge
#

otherwise like brioan said i would have suggested something like javascript or something

#

python is just one of those you won't regret learning in the end

proven tangle
#

Is there one overall language that many others would be easily picked up afterwards, similar to it? Like how knowing Latin can eek you through French and Spanish?

I'd maybe start with python

Python is a def for me

then learn nfg's fav language, html

typescript? oooo I have not yet heard of that
