Lets just anyone intelligent to just up and leave
I think they do
When I was in Amsterdam I met a guy in the airport
Said he left Straya 25 years ago and never went back
I would strongly consider doing it if I were employable
I have a job that I doubt I could match elsewhere
What are your skillz
Discording 9-5
What is your job?
I do web dev work but like....im no expert and any real web dev will interview better than me
like I know I can work on that shit but theres been a lot going on
leaving would simplify things though, catch 22
You can't work as a full-time eye of the beholder player?
I could probably get a job in most European countries within a month, or the us branch within a week, but meh, Norwat
I don't speak European
And norwegians, whan there is other norwegians near
And what makes you think I speak English
They're just in the EU because too scared to be invaded again
What sort of development do you do Whiskerz
I'd go full language immersion if i visited another country again
@light trout what do you mean, I even speak Swedish with other Norwegians nearby
Learn how to say "I'm trying to learn your language, please forgive my attempts but don't talk english to me"
@boreal pewter we aren't in the EU
He might have meant the French
Common behaviour @clear ferry
Mostly just front end stuff and half of what I do uses products designed so 'anyone' can do web dev
so my practical experience is patchy
Do you know react
nope
One day
Oop was playing some metro
I have no idea, I dont think about it much cause my job is stable and its fine. Who knows if I would move either way
I dont really dream of work
@hushed basalt - I moved from USA to Finland 20 years ago because I wanted to have kids and raise them in a violence-free society
How was it podz
pretty much went as expected
a few school shootings in 20 years, but nothing like the bi-weekly happenings in the USA
hehe, I doubt finnish is in the top ten list but yes it is very alien to an english speaker
not true - estonian is very close to finnish
i've never studied estonian but I can somewhat parse it when reading
True, but it isn't really a seperate language imo, it is like saying Swedish and Norwegian is different, I would rather say variations ๐
Semantics though
the main thing that causes problems for ango-germanic speakers with finnish is that it is an agglutinative language
All the different Kasus is what gets me
Other than that it is quite easy to read at times
meaning that instead of using prepositions, there are postpositions added on to the end of words and there are 17 cases so an infinite number of postpositions can be added on to any word
with english, your mind can parse in binary mode. with finnish, it requires bayesian parsing mode.
What do you guys use for alerts / notifications on your phone?
I integrated my garbage schedule and am attempting to send some kind of push notifications based on a state of an entity
I use Pushbullet. But this is probably a #330944238910963714 question
What's Norwegian like,
For english speakers
Norwetian I should say
Plus I'd have to deal with your snow storms
It's in the same language family as English (Germanic languages)
Dutch is the single ugliest language I've heard
it's like German, but spoken with weird throat noises scattered in every few syllables
gaelic has entered the chat
at least gaelic sounds exotic ๐
Like, French or Welsh
They're different but they sound the same as English, fundamentally,
Dutch was just like
I've had many collegues who have come from different countries
They all say the same
Norwegian is very easy
And forgiving
๐ค
But... No Amazon prime
How will i buy moderately priced goods with 5 day "free" delivery
We don't, we overpay and wait too long
We don't even have Amazon non prime
But now they have started shipping some stuff here
That will probably ends now, when they have to compute taxes before the sale
Amazon is an interesting beast
A seller pays the storage fees, packing and shipping fees,
And then amazon charges a user the shipping fees as well
Unless they pay amazon for "free shipping"
Why doesn't Amazon deliver to Norway? You are in ETA, right?
We have some strange import rules, which most foreign companies don't want to comply with
So you could buy like $1050 of stuff from US without paying US state tax, imports or gst fees
Now it's like 70 cents to the usd. And there's GST and fees
Our limit for that was $35, now it's $0 :/
So $500 usd becomes $850 aud very quickly
I thought you couldn't add any of that stuff in the ETA but I guess it's just EU then
Yeah ours is $0
Maybe Norwat just needs to become an island state :D
Like north korea
@light trout 0 from 1st of april
Oh.. nice ๐คท
And it is vague what products really
I read two different government documents
And I still don't understand if random goods from AliExpress are affected
The sellers have to collect the tax here
So if you buy something from amazon.com, amazon charges you the taxes
Unless it's over $1000 aud value, then it's just.. expensive
Can easily be a good 20-25% on top
Mostly anything to Norway of value will be minimum 25 on top
Lovely
I'm sure your local retailers and distributors have loopholes to minimize the tax
Or eliminate it
Plus their volume and trade discounts
It's likely they pay $35 for something they sell to you for $100.
the VAT in Norway is 25% so there's not much you can do to go around that other than to sell from outside of the trade area and hope the customs don't tax it
I've never heard of Norway, do you mean Norwat?
Plus the company of that product refuses to list it for sale to your country outside of those distirbutors
๐
Also, damn, abode throwing shade at ring lmao
Ooph 25%
I guess you don't need to spend $500/month on health insurance that doesn't provide much though
And maternity leave
Do you have toll roads though?
The whole data, privacy and analytics abuse from all these IoT devices is like a, well duh moment
I should just mute my google homes though. They're getting more useless I swear
I don't know about Norway but most nordic countries don't have tolls. The bridge between Sweden and Denmark does, so it's possible that some tunnels in Norway would but I doubt it
No tolls in my state
But the rest of australia has them
It's all very... Capitalist
And on fire
en fuego
Why use public funds to build a tunnel for a couple of billion, when you can collectively spend a couple billion every year to have someone else do it for you :D
We have that everywhere, too many of them @hushed basalt
Too many tunnels? :โฌ
Tolls
Same
In Norway?
Yup
Ew
We get private companies to build bridges, let them collect tolls for like 50 years, then transfers into public ownership
I thought Norway was supposed to be smarter about privatisation :D
We build public assets, then sell them for a year or two worth of revenue
Then pay three times as much in 5 years
Hey, we decided to copy that great idea here too ๐
This will get political very quickly though haha
But is it political if all the parties suck :D
More class warfare than politics
Sold the TV network to some French company and kept the law that requires us to keep paying for it for safety reasons. Even when everyone has a 4G connection anyway
I spend $2500 a year on toll roads, 95% covered by work
Now this is weird
Trying to call a us number
But it won't go through
Amazon support international should be +12069220880
I blocked your number

Unblock it plz
Lmao

my wife is already asking if it can learn a different map for upstairs
and I told her we'd have to get a second one and she said "we'll have to think about that"
it just finally completed a cycle of my downstairs
Flolevac app, if you want quick map cordinates
Happy 1920 everyone!
So guess what, I found out that my utility has a really easy alternate rate structure that I can gain with my home assistant install
I think it'll help me achieve a 35% reduction in my electric bill without really changing any obvious thing up as far as my habits go
Yeah that's like an extra $40 a month in my pocket
So for 10% of the month my rate increases 400%
how does homeassistant change your rate structure?
And for 90% it goes down 50%
I have a Z-Wave energy meter in my electric service panel
As well as a 40 amp controller on the electric water heater
oh, homeasssitant "hacks" your rate structure. ๐
Plus I smart plug on my refrigerator and dehumidifier which runs all the time
The peak. Is only 3 hours so I can turn off my fridge and fill the insides with some thermal Mass if I need to
So I force all the heavy appliances and my thermostat to throttle down for 3 hours a day during the week and avoid that high rate
the holy grail for me has always been to see if I could take all the devices off auto, and have automation control on/off so no two large loads caused a peak.
I've been doing that on this off grid house in order to get the house to operate within the parameters of the system and I've been thinking about how to monetize it and it's just a surprise that my own power company I can get a real good pay back on
But it Fox with the rest of the Z-Wave Network cuz it's so much data so there's that
the problem I have is the AC.. i'd have to keep adjusting it up and down on the multiple units to let each one run.. thats a pretty complex setup
usually the time of rate structure is around where I live or design simply to increase your electric bill and not to decrease it so it's a pleasant surprise
Well if you have a Z-Wave thermostat
Then you just program it to run the temperature up, it's just for 3 hours and you can super drive it right before
oh, yeah.. the times here are hideous. no Ihave a controllable one.. I just mean I'd have to basically write a thermostat backend that measured the house at different points and used it to control all 3
But yeah in general I'd say you have to go around the air conditioning loads rather than try and synchronize them
yeah well, thats pointless because it's 99% of the problem
these relays are current sensing so you actually can prevent them from turning on if another one is running and so you just have to have them get in line at that point, a condition on the automation
essentially, each AC unit is like.. 4k watts. I have 3. if they sync, its $$.
Yup. Real hard on batteries too
I think I can do it eventually.. it's just hard.
for my problem, the refrigerator is just noise. ๐
Yeah I'm going to see how it goes coasting the air condition for 3 hours a day straight
Total savings could be as much as 50%, minus the fixed fees
the higher-end air conditioner units nowadays really don't like it when you kill their power supply either they be but you and send out all kinds of alerts
I need to smarten up my old heat pump
That'll save me some money per year
Probably the biggest energy thief in the house
Here's my question for you gargle do you think you could go three hours without using your mini splits at all, if you're running them full blast for the hour prior
Can't go too long without the heat pump here in winter atleast, especially when it is -30c outside
so I have detailed measurements during the summer. The heat rises FAST
What I used to do was over-run them leading up to the rate change, and then coast. I could make it a few hours in, and then it got bad. and it got bad right when we got home, so it was kinda non-ideal
I mean, is it livable, sure. But my wife would be unhappy, and so would I really.. so.. I need a better way.
I live in Phoenix
When it's 115 out, you have to actively fight that. What is actually terrifying is watching the voltage on the mains drop to near brownout as the heat rises.....
Sounds like both of you are on opposite extremes. In Phoenix it regularly gets up to a hundred and sixty F on the roof
Rather than killing the AC you could set it to a much higher temperature and that would buy you some extra time
so who wants to set up HA for me while I take a nap?
@scenic radish โ๏ธ
Lmao
is there a good channel on this discord or any other good active ones to ask about product recommendations? I want to replace some lights I installed with some that are RGB but match the same connectors.
Here or other is usually good for hitting lots of users with hardware non ha specific questions
And for pinching people ๐ค
okay ๐ i got two questions then. Anyone familiar with the Aqara sensors from aliexpress and with homeassistant zigbee / mqtt setup do I need the gateway still? https://bit.ly/2SISdcV
Smarter Shopping, Better Living! Aliexpress.com
my light one was if any good rgb versions of lights like these, https://amzn.to/2F889xt, small ceiling space and already have these installed I just got way too bright of white on 8 of my 6" and 4 of my 4".
For your 6": https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07F2BP9PK
Same page for your 4" too
perfect thanks guys.
Murf, are you familiar with Tuya Convert?
do I just have to unplug that cap and wire it into the the same connector type?
hmm I've heard the name but never read up on it much, @raven ember
As for aqara, do use a few of them with conbee and deconz, just another gateway. You can take the zigbee to mqtt route as well.
@raven ember seen any 6" downlight with gimbal that supports tuya ?
so if I do the zigbee to mqtt I could just skip buying their hub? okay. Those sensors seem good but I wasn't sure. Finding things on aliexpress I always feel like I'm buying something in the back of an alley
Yes you can skip their hub
is Tuya for the light setup?
Ali-Express ~= AlleyExpress
exactly haha
actually 6" RGBCW downlight with gimbal
So Murf, nutshell: Out of the box you rely on the Tuya cloud service to control those lights. Someone has documented how to trick them to load a 3rd party software like Tasmota or EspHome and let you control them on your local network with no cloud.
agh, okay I see.
How you want to do it is up to you. Most people prefer as much local control as possible
yeah for sure that, I just like home-assistant for the fact I can centralize controls. my Nest thermostat for that reason might be on the way out after I migrated and now can't get it back on hass
You may want to just get one and fiddle with it, see if you can make it behave in a way you're happy. Otherwise, Amazon returns are awesome
okay sounds like a good idea. doing all of my 6 inch lights that i got too bright of white and did not return in time might not be worth with the price per light too I guess. I'm not that obsessed with color light parties to need to replace.
Quad apparently likes to party. I'm going with white dome trims for my 6" cans and color tuneable BR30 bulbs
Are your "too bright" lights wifi dimable?
my stupid flat roof house from the 70s has no space between the ceilings. Only way I could get recessed were these slim ones. but they are dimmable it still is just, awful. haha feels like im at an office building with how white they are.
Ah, they're too bright of white Kelvin-wise
yep 5k are the ones I really hate.
some are 4k that im not super thrilled but are better.
@raven ember ๐ Not all the time but, easy to have them ready when the need arises. BTW flashed 2 x LOHAS BR30 last night as well. I think I am done for now.
A few of the 6" ones hate the inovelli zwave switches for some reason too and blink a little when dimmed.
Yeah, I wouldn't be happy without at least color-tunable bulbs (2700K-6500K)
yeah for sure just sucks for example those 4" ones. a 4 pack I would need is the same price for 1 of the RGBW ones
haven't seen you guys since last decade o/
Quad, did you see the update to Tasmota 8.x?
"Change Smoother Fade using 100Hz instead of 20Hz animation"
Oh no. Not yet. Fade is not great as it is compared to z-wave. Did you try it out?
No, I'm getting my test BR30 out now
Right on.
2 x BR30 getting installed tomorrow, so I will wait for your results ๐
I think most of the reason Fade isn't as good on some of these is that LIFX and Philips use a hardware PWM... and these are software PWM
So here's hoping
do you guys order some of the lights you do the tasmota stuff with from alixp too? or amazon
Yep. You can see the ramp stepping/notch when close to the bulbs. I hate that
Amazon here
I wanted to maybe order some for lights behind tv's monitors maybe some cabinet ones if there are some strips that would be simple enough for a noob to start learning.
Murf, my tunable BR30's are courtesy of Walmart. Oddly, the only place I can find them.
crazy
These are the ones flashed yesterday https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07TMY394G
are strips easy to connect in a similar way to do some behind tv's
ive been avoiding the phillips hue stuff
WLED for strips https://github.com/Aircoookie/WLED
https://amzn.to/36dO196 like these? is there a wireless power option so you can do it with a battery or something?
https://www.home-assistant.io/integrations/miflora/ - do I just get a bluetooth dongle for my server so I could add these to hass?
yay fixed my pi. I think the wlan adapter had it. threw a $5 USB one in and it just magically works now.
I'm going to flash these and put them in my living room, six cans there: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07RZKV7FQ
The only place I care to have RGB lighting
@wheat canyon Place to ask about Home Assistant is ... #330944238910963714 ๐
๐
I think I just ordered enough hardware to last awhile. back to screwing up my lovelace dashboards again now. ๐ I really need to learn how to have two versions running of my home assistant to break one and the push once I get it working... still not quite there ha.
Test instance ๐
Was that the one that ssh bit the dust on @proper swift ?
I run a Pi with a test instance for testing/destruction
Virtual Machine?
@steel urchin yep. It was the wifi adapter (builtin).
i was going to suggest nic failure, but i know nothing about Pi, just ๐ฅง
such a weird error/failure mode.. but.. yeah. $5 dongle and it's happy now
it's currently rsyncing the 6GB of pictures it took for the timelapse up to the server..
it's amazing how cheap wifi and BT dongles are these days
except USB wifi adapters that can be put into monitor mode
@tidal bronze The new Fade on the Tasmota 8.1.0 is really amazing. It's almost as good as a hardware PWM now
rule #1. If the problem makes zero sense, it's because hardware failed. ๐
Thanks for the update. Going to update now. @raven ember
Do you have any trouble mixing white with 4 channel bulb's
Color 255,0,0,0 in console works like a charm but HA white slider acts up when sliding.
i remember back in my highschool days doing tech bench support stuff at a retail store, and literally spent a full day on a system that would randomly just shut off.. replaced every single part in it... except the cdrom. Disconnected, and boom, everything went fine... hadn't seen it before, or since. Must of had some internal short
about 5 seconds from install appdaemon and saying seeya jinja lol
Jinja
Rookie mistake nfgCodex :D
Always try a check with nothing in it except a stick of ram, cpu and PSU :D
not a rookie mistake if you need to boot off optical media
as i said, it was random... so POSTs were always fine
Optical media was always the worst
I think i didn't even have my ODD plugged in for years
Just sitting in the chassis
Yeah I dont even have an ODD anymore
holy shit why is that so big
Thoughts on an idiot setting up Alexa integration manually?
Can somebody tell me if there is an adding or plugin to safe the current state of the light?
#330944238910963714 , but thatโs what the new scene creator is for: https://www.home-assistant.io/docs/scene/editor/
@tidal bronze newest WLED release is REALLY unstable
disconnects from wifi after a while
Anyone have an idea why I couldn't get a simple light to turn on with service: light.turn_on and only type: turn_on would work?
I donโt understand what โtype: turn_onโ means, but this a question for #330944238910963714
Yup, your right @static schooner
anyone have a dedupe image tool they prefer?
anyone run into any issues with update 0.103.5. I am just asking before diving in.
@silent canyon #330944238910963714
Hey Happy New Year. thanks
Happy new year!
forty years later i'm at a resting point on my overly complex sensor lol
and what is this sensor
๐คจ
I just bought 3 x Symphonific dials from Ikea
Here's to hoping they make good light switches
why 3? what if they don't work?
ikea has a 365-day return policy lol
funny story about that btw. i bought a $600 dining set from ikea, used it for 9 months, realized i didn't actually like it, and i returned it and got all my money back
so basically i rented a dining set for the cost of the dinner that i paid for for my friend who has a pickup truck
they just repackage it up and sell it to next Tediore in line..
they put it in the as-is section
to sell to the next Tediore in line
but not buying thier smarthome stuff cause it need hubs ....๐คข
not if you have a zigbee stick
laughs in ZHA
you need to have zigbee to begin with otherwise to buy the stick is extra $$
I couldn't even read a motion sensor with it in HA
well, right, but you can use products from multiple brands with a zigbee stick
ZigBee is way better than esp etc
didn't someone say your limited on the amount of devvices you can have using zigbee?
wasn't it like 12 or something lol
woo hoo got my livingroom setup
@forest edge i believe there is a limit to number of devices on one network but it's certainly not 12
actually, there is no limit for zigbee
for z-wave it's 232 devices
@steel urchin what does that consist of? everything turning off and on a second while dusty roams around attacking people's feet?
https://support.smartthings.com/hc/en-us/articles/208672926-Z-Wave-and-ZigBee-FAQ
How many devices can be on a Z-Wave or ZigBee network?
Z-Wave: Up to 232 devices. The controller counts toward the total number of devices on the network; in other words, up to 231 devices could be connected with a single SmartThings Hub.
ZigBee: ZigBee networks do not have a concrete limit on the number of devices. Some users may have hundreds of devices, or more, on a single network. However, larger networks will require wireless repeaters to ensure connectivity and optimal signal range and strength.
I remember someone saying zigbee was some small number like 20ish
we don't have many neighbors yet, 5 houses down someone came over and asked me to turn it down during my testing
some people here have like 50+ zigbee devices on their networks
maybe but maybe they have to have those on seperate mesh
maybe whoever said that was talking about smartthings which has a 32 device limit
oh i dunnop, just remember someone talking about it
either way not buying a zigbee stick to use ikea lol
well whoever told you is a liar
i mean, it opens up the possibility to use other devices too
I wonder if it's adjustable
All the devices push I believe
Unless they have actions, like a motion sensor
Then they just push on action
ah right, nvm
Other than some low level background telemetry is my guess
can you adjust the rate on ones that would report crap like temps ect?
they're still probably polled though if they haven't pushed anything in a while probably not for sleepy devices, nvm
that would also probably depend on device
thats what i like about wifi and mqtt, i can adjust those
i need to go to bed lol
Zigbee2mqtt is mqtt
yea but if the device pushes your still at the mercy of the zigbee
nuh uh
doesn't it get interference when your neighbor pops popcorn your motion sensor goes off?
just being silly
because this https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ZigBee#ZigBee_Alliance
maybe this will stabilize with the whole google announcement, but compatibility and the awkward licensing has put a bad taste in a lot of people's mouths
0.5 inch
That sounds familiar

Since I have 65 paid vacation days this year I though i would be nice to my manager and take today and tomorrow off
did they plan this huge party?
you you said you'd be nice to take the two days off, didn't know if the heads up prompted party planning lol
No, then it looks to HR like I'm being responsible and starting the new year by taking days off to get rid of my excess paid days ๐
Not forced, but asked nicely, we get 27 every year, the remainder roll over to next year
Hence 65

Actually my wife did a study about the accuracy of the statement
Come to think of it
For her bachelor's i believe
on Kansas being flat?
lol
Which imo should be a subject on all primary and secondary schools in developed countries
Think they are starting to implement it in secondary schools here now
we view it as more of an expression than a misinformation
I think generally the governments of the world donโt want their citizens questioning the news
If enough people believe it it would be misinformation ๐

So... Does anyone know of any branch circuit electrical monitors that can tie into HA stuff?
Power meters, or something else?
Yes
Well, then you'd want to be asking in #330944238910963714 anyway, but there are #zwave-archived options at the very least
As in, whole home ones that you can install in your circuit breaker
Oh I didn't mean specific to home assistant. I meant HA as in home automation
Yes, and still the wrong channel ๐
Oh, well, still, this is the Home Assistant discord ๐

The drool bucket is half empty. I'm doing pretty good ๐
Not bad design on the pairing button under the cover - keeps little snot nosed brats from screwing with your systems
I'm always hard on myself, because I'm a dolt
also adhd people when something doesn't work immediately, they start rapidly pressing buttons and cycling through all combinations of buttons, etc
Sounds like most of my customers have ADHD
Looks like it when I check the logs atleast
they try to show you something on their monitor and they scroll 2cm in a browser, then flip tabs 20 times before you had time to read the first thing they were trying to show you then they start alt-tabbing to cycle through all their applications, go back to tab 1 and scroll 2cm more then flip away immediately
I love the most non panic friendly feature in an enterprise product ever
Clippy?
The HP EVA storage had arrow button on the front to do enter and escape, so only four buttons, up down and enter ESC, but if you get into the erase entire array feature the esc and enter keys change place because you are supposed to think, but then you have to confirm afterwards which means they change places again, so, if you get into the menu, and press what you think is escape then panic and press what you now though was escape again you wipe up to 240 drives
Like the machine room with the big red button on one side of the doors for exit and a big red button a bit higher up on the other side for emergency shutdown
Picture of said controllers
All of the Hitachi storage products have an emergency power button, that if pressed break for safety
If you press it by accident everything stops and you have to order a new button
Love that too
Haha yeah, it's only supposed to be used if a fire happens or something or water
But come on
Atleast it is behind acrylic that has to be moved
I work with products that make it easy to justify enterprise cost, that is for sure ๐
@last dirge I am running 0.9.0-b1, no issues
D1 mini ?
no response on the API or HTTP
yes, d1 mini
if the lights are on it'll stay connected forever
Last year I stopped using wemos for led. Only run nodemcu now.
why?
the nodemcus I ordered were some shit version where they're exactly as wide as a breadboard
Had multiple issues and didn't want to deal with it.
@peak cloud is using d1 minis I think
I only use D1 mini for lux and temp stuff.
There is only 1 bug I noticed in 0.9.0-b1, if you access segments through mobile app they get reset.
Just try with the node
jUsT tRy WiTh ThE nOdE
I'm going to flash an older version
see if that changes anything
there's a few issues on aircookie's repo that are related to wifi and they suggest using an older version
How's the signal level at the mini ?
good enough
Quad, did you reflash with Tasmota 8.1.0?
I've never used Tasmota
Also +1 for Wago wiring connectors
@tidal bronze @last dirge no disconnects here either, running 0.90b1 and wemos mini d1, been on and off for three weeks
@clear ferry are you running 12V or 5V stuff?
5v
@tidal bronze 12v or 5v?
@raven ember yes on 3 bulbs. Looking good. Going to test for about a week before flashing everything else. @last dirge Mix of 5v and 12v
on the 12V stuff are you bucking or using a separate ground-tied 5V supply?
bucking
couldn't find an iron with a bigger tip? ๐
@tidal bronze over here like https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/71XbRUBdW9L._SL1500_.jpg
Looks like the ts100
Ts100 it is.
I'm going to try changing the wifi to my other AP and see if that makes any difference
@last dirge always bigger Max temp. It's all in timing and how good are with hands ๐
but the other AP is further away and I dont' know if it can hear it
What's the RX level ? Unifi?
Can you do another test, fire half the length and see if you get the same results
dunno, not at home right now ๐
it's not unifi, some cheapo PoE WAP I added so my car could get wifi when parked in the driveway
right now it's about 25 feet from the WAP it's connected to
the other one's like 35-40 feet but it's got fewer clients
@scenic radish what's wrong with trigger?
pressing that button bypasses any conditions in the automation
so it really doesn't act as a trigger, it just runs the action just like running a script
so then it should be named Execute inline with scripts?
down side the attr is labeled last_trigger and that will make it confusing when that updates
With recent security breaches with home automation systems. What makes HA more secure to these hacks?
what security breaches?
it's only as insecure as what you connect it to
Though, if you don't expose it to the Internet, it's pretty hard to "hack"
yeah but it also can't make stuff that's not under its control more secure
No, but I'm only worried about HA itself here ๐
Cloud stuff ๐คข
Whether some cloud service gets breached, again, ... ๐คท
@last dirge ring and wyze
Clown stuff ๐คก
As I said, HA runs locally, not in the cloud
If it gets "hacked" that's because you set it up so that it could be
even if you do use HA Cloud, none of your stuff is in the cloud
Ring was useless to me since I couldn't get live video feeds, and wyze appears to be shite in regards to stability so I have neither
but yeah, if you leave it open to the world that's on you
@scenic radish change the on/off to enabled/disabled too! doooooooo iiittttt
Mine has been exposed for almost the entire 3 years, but I didn't set up admin/admin as the auth ๐
I just left those fields blank, is that bad?
you went with the more secure admin/password I assume
@forest edge no, set it as gifted/challenged for political correctness
Please, hunter2
Password123! To check all the requirements

Tediore about to be responsible for thousands of people's HA's breaking and tearing their hair out trying to fix it
I hope they consider the enable/disable while doing that. literally had to explain that to someone last night lol
enabled/disabled
Why not sugest that with a PR that changes it?
cause I want tediore to take the fall not i
I see, good call
lol
Let's blame @scenic radish for once and not me ๐
What do u guys consider as a must to be installed on home assistant?!
something that requires a button to push
Well, that's a #330944238910963714 question ๐
Software wise and not hardware
See the channel topic @midnight adder
Lounge
For chat around things that aren't Home Assistant related,
The topic is more than one word
Mine just says #Lounge
Because you're on mobile
Go to the icon on the top right, with two people
Click it
It'll show the actual topic
Or slide left from the right edge
Nevermind
For chat around things that aren't Home Assistant related,
It was just a question.
The question is fine, the channel you chose isn't ๐
uh oh I spoketh the name Jesus last night.. didn't even read it was FORBIDDEN

I hope that's sarcasm...
You can just assume that for most things in #the-water-cooler

Wut
Discord now has a mind blown emoji?!
I made my own for my other servers long ago lol
Best used sarcastically
it's 2020 ya'll ๐
hmm, seems that ikea ships their motion sensors with 74% battery level as standard
Generally inaccurate
That's how they get you
if the battery was 100% i'd be more concerned then if it was anything blow that
unless the mfr plant was across the street
lol took me a sec to find my emoji.... it was a Nuclear Facepalm.... for when you see something so bad, a normal facepalm just won't cut it...
I love it
@clever mortar Can you add?
Go ahead lol
don't see why not...
Tinkerer pls
YESH
This one is absolutely awesome with sound.
Well, I haven't even started any kind of HomeAssistant setup yet... but hey, at least I've made a mark already lol
Got a lot of reading ahead to learn about Home Assistant..... I have 9 echo devices, ~22 bulbs, 10 outlets, 12+ cameras, 2 motion sensors, and 4 door sensors from everyone from SmartThings, Amcrest, Cree, SmartLife, Wyze and Wemo... I even use AssistantComputerControl to put my computer to sleep when I tell Alexa goodnight lol.... HomeAssistant seems like the perfect option to tie everything together. #yeeeee
damn, that's a lot of stuff and different standards
This is why Home Assistant exists ๐
I accidentally deleted the virtual hard disk I use for my home server. I've lost my configs for Plex, Apache, Nextcloud, Homeassistant, Minecraft, Calibre, UniFi, WeeChat, and a few other servers. Most of the actual data was kept on an external storage solution but I'm going to have to spend all day rebuilding my configs...
lame
And this... this is why you take backups
Does anyone on here use software for stock control/planning at home?
and TEST your backups
I tried the grocy plugin but found it a bit clunky
Who knew a single 32GB disk image could cause so much trouble
Nah, test your restores ๐
Are TP-Link smart bulbs local or cloud?
the plugs can be controlled locally in the Kasa app so i'd imagine the bulbs are the same
Nice, thanks
not sure though
yeah i like my hue bulbs
solid local api
no way to back up the bridge settings though... i dumped all the JSON from the api though in hopes it might be useful eventually
Oh I don't use the Hue Bridge
I have a Conbee II
You can back up the Phoscon config which is nice
tp can be controlled locally. i do it
even says Local on the app when you deny interwebs access lol
you deny your tp interwebs do ya? the abuse!
does your recorder show disconnects/unavailable from time to time? if so then maybe yes is the answer lol
๐คฃ
I'm sorry, but emoji's made of small dogs toy rats ... I'm not sure they count as proper emojis.

We need a voting system for new emoji, something more advanced than plead to Tink ๐ค

if you enable developer mode on desktop you can get the link of a message and save that to pull it up later @trim solar
okay, hoping that i will find it again

think of it like a "LIVE" version of facebook

HA Lounge. Come for the company. Stay because you don't want to be the last person to reply
I asked this on the #330944238910963714, but perhaps its more appropriate in the #the-water-cooler: Can anyone point me to a good reference to learn how to set up a subnetwork to use for Home Assistant and all of my home automation devices? I just used professor google to learn a lot about what ip addresses and subnet masks are, but I still can't figure out HOW best to set up my network to create separate subnets for general use and home automation. Thanks.
The answer is ... complicated
It's also probably more an #general-archived topic
Google for iot vlan and whimper
Thanks, Tinkerer.
I could not be more stoked to be here. long time lurker, first time poster - just getting going with Raspi 3, HassOS, Aeotec z-stick and looking forward to dumping all this data stealing google and amazon crap
voice command is so damn useful though
Heck yeah
this weather is BS
same... been needing to cut some sheets of plywood for shelving and it's been gross for like 2 weeks
What's wrong with the weather? ๐
67 and some clouds ๐ Looking good. Making something similar tonight.
Yep Fusion it is
I have that same Kobalt screwdriver along with the mini version lol
Tediore I can count on one hand how many times I've gone to Users lol
You know.... I can sit here building computer systems for myself and others, replace parts, tinker with electronics, find work arounds on otherwise restricted systems, teach myself the basics of networking, even change a couple of lines of code or track down nearly-impossible information... Then I browse something as simple as the lounge area here for 5 minutes and I feel like you guys are the Rick to my Morty.... I am a total and complete pleb lol. I look at some of what you're talking about and I'm like....
I really need to learn some coding language(s)...
I am seriously interested in learning about RPI as well
I've looked into Khan Academy and others, just a matter of finding the time...
learn python that's pretty simple
Correct me if I'm wrong... Py(thon) is what's used primarily on RPi?
it's just a language it's not specific to the rpi but most things that run on an rpi are linux based thus python can be ran/used. Course with that said you can run python pretty much anything
hmmm... I will look further into this, thank you
java FTW
I thought Java was slowly being phased out, I know it's a great language
java is slightly harder to learn
mmmm javascript is up there as well
I know most ATMs run Java
but java has been around long enough to not go away any time soon
A couple of years ago when I was big on the online gaming (GTA5/FiveM ftw)....... LUA was the big thing... From what I could tell, it was very similar to basic HTML
But again, LUA I believe is more game-focused.
micasaverde used to use LUA
I would love to have the knowledge to write some actual purpose-built programs
HTML is the #1 easiest language to learn lol
it's classified as one
hypertext markup language
like i said, poorly named
css is more of a language since it has variables and functions
Considering it is a markup language I don't see how it's poorly named.
because it's actually classified differently by computer science and basic terminology
it's not Markup. Language.
it's Markup Language
not Programming Language
it's still classified as such
no it's not
maybe not by your eyes
nobody said it was a programming language anyway
HTML is the #1 easiest language to learn lol
or anyone that does programming, or involved in computer science
it's a language none the less
I do alot of php and get made fun sometimes cause many don't see it as a language either lol
well that's just being asinine
I went on vacation to the beach with my parents and on the way down we stopped at a Barnes and Noble and they had some HTML books on clearance so I bought them and read them in the car
wrote web pages with pencil on paper
haha love it
i remember when we plastered "Made in Notepad" everywhere
anyway, now that the logical fallacies are out of the way, java is a great language to learn even if i don't care to use it myself
I made a cat on the beach one time in HTML
I don't remember no made in notepad
python is also popular
.net pays decently but i hate the platform
javascript has been on the rise the last 10ish years
embedded is great for niche stuff (atms, coke machines, etc)
python is pretty much a pretty rounded language to start learning, tend to find more uses for it in more areas than alot of the others
i say just pick a language, and build something... starting is the hard part
otherwise like brioan said i would have suggested something like javascript or something
python is just one of those you won't regret learning in the end
Is there one overall language that many others would be easily picked up afterwards, similar to it? Like how knowing Latin can eek you through French and Spanish?
I'd maybe start with python
Python is a def for me
Then get into JavaScript before too long
Learning pretty much anything will give you the tools to learning pretty much anything else
then typescript after that
Yeah
then learn nfg's fav language, html
typescript? oooo I have not yet heard of that
i Think starting with ASSEMBLY would be best
it's basically c# in javascript
if yall youngens even know what that is
It's what the OG pokemon games were written in ๐
i mentioned embedded ๐
my mom said something about her knowing Cobalt.... she's 72 lol
cobalt is all but dead now
Why even bother with assembly. Why not just write in binary
but i do have a buddy that works with it
oh damn
$$$$$$
cobalt is still used in a lot of legacy system along with fortran
Banks love their legacy
yep, he makes what I make in a year in 3 mo.... insane.. and i get paid well
Aka never changing
I suppose there could be a potential $$$ for anyone familiar with antiquated languages, as so few people would be left who know them
its the root of it all
If it aint broke don't fix it. And if it is broke just ignore it until the economy collapses
yeah, not even sure how you'd even get into cobalt these days really
They've just won the language lottery
you don't want "that" job that makes you responsible for keeping a turd breathing
getting an as400 might be near impossible
lmao @forest edge
There's a million dead languages that aren't worth jack from 50 years ago
FWIW... I still have n IBM machine in my house running Windows 3.1 lol
just why
do you live in the smithsonian?
runs better than windows now i bet
never got rid of it, just sitting there collecting dust
havent turned it on in years
lol @dull chasm
i was going to ask, is it "running" ?
I would imagine I could turn it on right now, talk about a throwback for me.... I started on that bad boy at like age 4.... 3.5" floppy, running Joust and Chopper attack in DOS
3.5"? Fancy
yeah, I know it was much larger before lol
5.25"
about the same time I was making mix tapes on my radio with the cassette
best game ever back then https://i.ytimg.com/vi/9vFhY9-HwQs/maxresdefault.jpg well aside from Zork lmao
now with windows 10 i am running accros my state because i have machines that use ticket printers and windows has this little check mark that allows windows to use most recent printer and ....a document prints on recent printer instead of default printer set
The MS-DOS version of Test Drive, played in EGA mode.
During my first game I get an immediate game over because I crash into a police car. Too bad, because I nearly passed the car in front of me and that might have gotten rid of him.
In the second game I make it to the gas ...
my dad recorded my sister's voice for the SoundBlaster 8bit as a joke and sent it to them, and they sent us serial number 3 for the very first consumer cd rom.... had to load the cd into a cartridge
they also gave us a bunch of other stuff, but that was pretty rad, i still have it
i also had dinner with John Carmack and got the first public copy of Wolfenstein 3d
serial number 1 baby!
i kinda miss the days of tinkering with DOS, writing silly gwbasic programs
building GUIs out of shoddy ascii characters
To be honest I could probably recommend javascript as a first language nowadays
Unless you want to work for a Saas founded in 2010
I've heard of Ruby but havent seen much mention about it
You can go a long long long way with javascript thougg
act like it doesn't exist
