Bhyve is quite shitty though
I have an old Linksys router, from before they got bought by Cisco, does that count?
wrt54gl ftw
๐๏ธ
I'll raise you my 3com wireless router with 11Mbit
I have a set of 10Mbit powerline adapters
Time to crack out my 56K serial modem
But what about my 9600 baud one?
lol
can you run two powerline systems in the same house?
interesting question
I still need to try that out
if you have multiple local providers (most residential do not)
I have a fastish Netgear now, will my old 10Mbps TP Links screw it up?
still need to try that one out
Different frequencies probably
openwrt ftw
Pfsense or bust
more than one antenna = looks FAST
Then add access points as needed
I really want a reason to go pfsense, but this older Linksys with OpenWRT Just Works
๐คข
yeah, but it works ๐คทโโ๏ธ

way overkill?
R710 just for pfsense? I hope not
lol
the wifi is uhh limited, but on cable you probably wouldn't see a difference between this and your R710
hell, it's got more wifi than your r710!
I don't like running the router in a VM, and I'm on the fence about HA -- when that box goes down, NOTHING works anymore
r710 pushes 300mbps
I'd rather have a few SBCs
not like power, like me messing with it at 4am
what do you mean
this reminds me I should backup my HA VM
good idea
I will screw up that machine one night and next day I'll have no internet, no home automation, no music, etc
better keep them separate
๐ ๐
I'm running one router, one NUC, and one NAS
at least when I screw up the NUC I can google for a solution
while listening to music ๐
1 router, 2 wireless aps for now.... one server and soon a pi4 cluster
I have a dedicated 5Ghz network for IoT on its own band
one AP here, with a separate 2.4GHz IoT network (on VLAN 107)
cheap ESP boards don't do 5GHz
not happy with coverage though, looking to switch to a mix of 433MHz and Zigbee
I do that as well
IoT on 5Ghz channel 36 at vtf 80
also on 2.4 channel 6. regular network is a vtf 160 on DFS 100 (goes into channel 128)
aka im hitting about 1.2 Gbit on wireless
bring on the 8k streaming
i may have issues
will do this
interesting
Apropos the swedish street discussed the other day
Most streets cities have a few streets with this kind of decoration in December.
And pretty much every house has lights and stars in the windows
Really helps with the dark
Do people in Sweden do this for specifically religious reasons or is it just a seasonal thing to do?
(on average, obviously there's probably a bit of both)
It's related to the Advent, and the stars represent the star over Betlehem. So traditionally, the lights are all turned off after christmas day.
But I'd say mostly people just do it because it's what you do. And it looks nice.
Also, today is Lucia day, so that's when those girls go around and sing and offer sweet bread with saffron.
It's always interesting to me to see the similarities and differences for celebrating the same thing in different countries
Some kind of mish-mash of pagan rituals and a made up story of an Italian saint...
๐คฃ mish-mashing traditions is the true Christmas spirit
I'm a big fan of decorations this time of year, regardless of religious preference. It's just a boost to my mood to look at what people come up with. I wish more people in my neighborhood did
wow, shipping is a shitshow this year
Luckily there are entire neighborhoods that get together to do lights that we can easily drive to see
ecobee never gave me the tracking or told me it was shipped and fedex called was like um... we tried to deliver 3 times
another day spent going to have to drive off and pick it up.... might as well just picked up at a microcenter
as long as I can keep my dual homekit/home assistant configuration
check if your electricity company provide rebate
they do not
The decorations of my hometown
On one hand the flaw sucks. On the other, ain't nobody gonna hack your door
Can someone find a news story about someone actually hacking a door lock with intent to steal shit?
fuck hacking... easer to just go through a window
That's my point
I want to know if anyone has actually gone through the effort or if this is all just people panicking for no reason
plus, if you have a smart door... you better have a camera pointed at it
Also, don't connect it to your voice assistant sitting on the table by the window.
For those that haven't seen it

Here's how I'd hack a smart lock: kick the damn door in
Whichever TV executive decided to release all 10 season 4 episodes of The Expanse at once, I โค๏ธ U. I was expecting to have to download half of it in shitty quality over a 9Mb/s satellite link when away next year.

Hello, please do you have a tip to get tasmota switches state afte hass restart? Someone uses retain function and I also found an automation: what do you reccomend?

@clever mortar shopping for audio equipment cost to damn much https://outlawaudio.com/products/7220.html need a gofund me ๐คฃ
Tinkerer is away for 35s with a message :point_right: Away
no doubt
You are just too picky @dull chasm
Just buy noname stuff that says it does 3000w RMS
๐
ya ok
๐
i found two others that are in a better price range 950 or 650 us dollar
still outlaws and not too much of diff
That is more reasonably priced at least, depending on the specs
very close
if i buy the 7000 i will surely have to make sure i am home ....damn thing wieghs 90 Lbs
The highest end stuff is usually just for showoff and the difference if even noticeable is so negligible that it is as we say in Norway, just for co** extension

Had a friend buy some Abrahamsen mono blocks a few years back, think he paid $800 each, then he sent them in for an upgrade that cost $600 each, I really couldn't tell any difference
$3K... ๐ฑ
i take it in 1k icrements tink ...i am not picky
That's ... about as bad as a friend of mine, who's a self professed audiophile
He owns a bunch of speakers, switches, cables, and so on
All so he can see how different setups sound with different music
yea ...my latest upgrade the biggest difference i hear is in music with good dynamics ....like singer/songwriters stuff from the 70's .....stuff with acoustic guitars piano and etc
one song that blew me away with yamaha 3080 and the Kliscph 8000's oddly was sweetleaf by Black Sabbath ...buddy brought over his turntable and WOW
We don't have electricity down here so we have to train emus to dance on tin roofs for music
@dull chasm you should try out Nils lofgren - acoustic on there
I need to upgrade my roof to oxygen aligned copper silver lined though
After I buy some carbon embedded bubble free concrete isolators for my house ;)
@clear ferry yea i dont pay for any subscriptions music but i was tempted to try out Tidal HIFI
You can get it on CD and vinyl ๐
i will be getting a turntable but thats prolly mid next year
Watch it or I'll come down there with a copy! ๐ฟ
I have spoken

Such a tiny part of the spectrum http://www.normankoren.com/Color_add_subtract_450.jpg
Hi. Very new to the whole concept of home automation. Can someone point me to a good, general primer/overview of the topic? I've seen $200+ starter kits, $10 bulbs, etc. I've seen things that need hubs and others that don't. I'm looking for something that'll provide an overview so I can understand what I'm looking at so I can ask a reasonable question. The HA FAQ tells me how to trouble shoot stuff with my HA install, but I haven't installed it yet. The documentation tells me how to install & program, but I don't have anything to test against. The Integrations page tells me how this works with wink & Zigbee, etc. but I don't even know if I need those or if they're optional and why I'd want them.
i.e. I'm a rank beginner and don't even know what the terms mean.
I've got plenty of experience as a programmer and PT hardware guy, so I'm sure I can figure it out, I just don't know where to start.
Well, you've found the Home Assistant Discord, so the assumption is that you're wanting to run Home Assistant ๐
i second that motion
https://www.home-assistant.io/docs/glossary/ can explain some of it
I'd Google other terms you're unsure of, and if in doubt... ask (though maybe not here - see the channel topic)
That does seem to be the way to go, but I haven't a clue if I need a hub, if HA takes the place of a hub, if I can find all hub-less hardware...
Home Assistant is the "hub"
Thanks @clever mortar - that'll be a great start.
Well, really it's the brains
See, you know what you're talking about and you're already disagreeing with yourself! That's why I'm confused! ๐
Hub is a term that lots of people use to refer to an all in one box
Home Assistant doesn't have all the hardware you need built in
It's "only" software after all ๐
However... you can plug in USB sticks, and what have you, and make it a "hub"
roger that. For example, for $3.50, this looks to be a great bulb to play with and do some testing. https://www.amazon.com/BA19-08027OMF-12CE26-1C100-Connected-Equivalent-White-Dimmable/dp/B01701DL7A/ref=sxbs_sxwds-deals?keywords=smart%2Bbulb&pd_rd_i=B01701DKVM&pd_rd_r=0348cd91-f71a-4479-967d-646a79f733ab&pd_rd_w=Cshy0&pd_rd_wg=4iGVs&pf_rd_p=0d9ff078-075d-4295-b9e1-6a735b26fa6f&pf_rd_r=GBH7C57RFX5SKKM4NSX6&qid=1576295372&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&th=1
The package notes connecting it to you wink app to register it. I don't have a clue if I have to have that app on my phone or if HA will detect it.
I'll go read the glossary to see if I can start asking some intelligent questions.
We're getting into #330944238910963714 territory, but ... that likely wouldn't work with HA ๐
Works with Alexa means it works with ... Alexa
Ah - see, that's good info to know!
99% of the time that means it's a cloud based service
No worries
Works with Alexa or Works with Google Assistant are generally the red-flags to avoid when looking for something that HA will control?
no not at all .....i have wemos and a bunch of other stuff that works with ha ...you just gotta check if it intergrated
#zigbee-archived and #zwave-archived are safe, for everything else see the links in #330944238910963714
hogwash
Yes, you can integrate your hog wash if you want, that's what #diy-archived is for

my tea and crumpets too
Most computers are good crumpet warmers
ahhh
anything that works with something that's listed on the integrations page will work with HA.
@clever mortar *cat warmers
That too ๐
Is it fair to ask for the cheapest bulb known to work with HA, just to get my toes wet & try it out? Something that's got a reasonably good chance of working OOB... Everything listed on Amazon seems to have its fair share of naysayers - it's hard to tell if they're incompetent or if it's an actual issue. :/
#330944238910963714 might know ๐
okey dokey. Trying not to weigh down the "official" channel with noob questions that weren't appropriate. There were lots of warning messages when I joined... ๐

I'm not sure what they are like in NZ. But I've found them great for Australia. Free shipping is boss
I know it's not best buy. And reshippers are a right pain

I'd like a 12TB SLC ssd
No u
To be honest spinning disk raids can still demolish ssds for high sustained throughput at medium/high capacities
lol a SLC ssd that large would be huge and stupid expensive XD
Ecks dee
@hushed basalt no one will beat that price. Its CRAZY like 8tb are $202 USD so a 14TB for $209 no one is close.
@wet pilot i never said I want to pay for it ;)
SSD?
PLC?
Unsure of the tech, I'll check the notes ๐
i'm kinda surprised businesses are accepting the risk that comes with the XLC > single
Doesn't state the tech
i think that's they only way they can get that high these days
The redundancy when you have more than one disk is sufficient enough
We never (rarely) have multiple drive failures
except for the sneaky one that can pop with raid5
Only support raid6 with those drive sizes really
true
You can run lower, at your own risk
but that's true for any raid
Anything over 2TB we say raid6
0 is fastest but be prepared to pay
Had a customer do raid0 on 240 drives
ouch
Was fun until the first drive failed
learn the hard way?
I'll install it myself, don't need that consultant that costs 1/400 of the system
Yeah, biggest HDD we have is 12TB, that came out this year, biggest SSD is 16 that came out atleast a year ago
And with the 32 to be released soon HDDs are almost dead
Only archiving uses HDDs really
@clear ferry RAID0 on 240 drives?!?! What now?
Customer knows best when he installs the system himself ๐คท
https://www.backblaze.com/blog/backblaze-hard-drive-stats-q3-2019/ On average 1.73% fail a year, and the lowest is 0.46% You're more or less guaranteed a failure within a year

Then the EU normies will be catching up
Speaking of other regions, I have only seen two Asian users, the Dutch guy living in Thailand (haven't seen him in a long time) and the Chinese guy who speaks via Google translate to no avail
Where are the Japanese and Indian automators
Nani?
Too much of a language gap maybe? Not that native Asians can't speak English well but I know it is a hard language to learn if it's not your first
English is easy
Mandarin, not so much
Thai is horrible
Might be easier for musicians though
I feel like I stop myself from doing home automation things through 'wire anxiety' like "How will I run this wire so it's not super clunky" or "How will I explain to mother that I need to drill a hole in the wall if I want to discreetly run a security camera" It's mildly annoying

any tips for learning python? i'm gonna start with the docs (
) at https://docs.python.org/3/tutorial/appetite.html but not sure if there's other stuff i should do
i've been using jinja2 a lot so i'm familiar with some things such as operators at least
Shadow @light trout for two weeks
done

f'real though
i was digging through the google wifi integration code (sorry, i know off-topic) and i got an idea of what's going on. google wifi has a REST api and i could see how the code digs through that
Most I do now, and in the next weeks are ts anyway ๐
That is correct, it has an API, that is not usefull at all, mostly just trash
or any tips or just sass ๐
yeah i loaded /api/v1/status in my browser and it has very little info lol
I learned some basic python by programming rockets with it. KRPC lets you use real life programming languages to fly Kerbal Space Program rocekts
it's fun!
๐
that's pretty kewl
Mhm.
@scenic radish but have you authenticated and used that token in the rest request ๐
For getting into rest I recommend postman, great software
Oh I remember Post Man
Maybe I misunderstand. Thanks for the tip about postman tho
that was so useful
as I bashed my head against a wall trying to understand how to scream SOAP at a Wemo Outlet
I am not a fan of XML or SOAP from that experience
I used to use SOAPUI for SOAP request untill recently when I move that to Postman as well
in the end I got it working and so I could use Voice Attack on my PC to turn my outlet on and off
I really need to use Voice Attack More. Got it for Elite Dangerous and i could use it for SO MANY GAMES
but I just dont
?rank other
That role no longer exists.
we had to get rid of @hassy, it was too sloppy
@scenic radish corey schafer on youtube for python
That's a good starting point
Also automate the boring stuff is good apparently
Yeah I started automate the boring stuff, I'll have to finish that one. Thanks for the tip on corey, I'll take a look
What's your end goal in mind too
Well the ultimate goal would be to help with development of topic forbidden, but I know that could be a lofty goal. Maybe just make a custom component or something lol
Yeah some automate the boring stuff projects would be a good starting point
Is any one aware of a T8 4ft wifi bulb?
I've spent a considerable amount of time searching and I'm convinced they don't exist
@hidden laurel i doubt it
Putting in a smart switch is going to be your best bet
Or changing the fixture
๐
There's these with ZigBee
I'd check if they have full switch off capacity, instead of just dimming
ty
ยฏ_(ใ)_/ยฏ
Looks like โฌ35 a piece
I'm not worried about the price I just want them to be connected like the rest of my lights
and I'm not really trying to change the fixture
I just need some mqtt stuff to connect them too if I go with them
I talked with @cgtobi, if itโs fine to post ads like this one here and itโs allowed. I also talked with @Koenkk about placing using the firmware and heโs fine with it too. You may ask yourself the following questions: Do I need this? If you are not into flashing dev...
so i started with the python.org docs and because of that i finally understand for loops
i was overthinking it i think
I thought every one who used hass was a programmer at some point in their life considering how much you have to go through to set it up
There's a spectrum
ok i got ha in docker going, have the zwave stick added.... soon i'll add all the switches!
i feel nervous leaving my shitty iq panel setup
like, i've been so anxious to leave it up to this point
@hushed basalt are we on the ha spectrum?
I might be entitled to government benefits
Or medication
Now that is very Norwegian
what does that say @clear ferry
and now i want waffles
oh god now i'm avoiding the internet
that does NOT make anything better ๐คฃ๐คฃ๐คฃ
nope, not googling

@hidden laurel well I used to write programs on my TI calculator which uses the BASIC programming language. So I guess I sort of was lol
hehe and that same language i was playing with in 86 when i was a kid
crazy how everything is really just the same! (but not really)
i'm looking for recommendations for a TV brand that is easy to control via home assistant. something that lets me programatically change the input source would be nice.. anyone got that working?
i have a samsung that uses some annoying encrypted protocol at the mo, that no one has quite figured out
do any have decent apis exposed on the lan?
i was wondering.. my experience with smart tvs is that they mostly suck
android tv is good enough then?
tmobile just went down in the netherlands
as in
entirely down
both their fixed line (they do fiber here) and mobile services down
@glossy canyon #330944238910963714
Freaking Untangle doesn't have an mdns reflector. Gotta set up a VM with avahi reflector if I want my IOT crap on a separate network and still control them from the LAN
I tried untangle for a year
Moved back to pfsense
Shite product tbh
That said, mDNS is shite too ๐
salty today ๐
How is that not related to HA?
And look at namespace
Yeah, I just came from pfsense on an old box. I like the untangle interface better (I have enough tech to manage, I don't need to waste an hour getting my internet working again because I screwed up a port forward or something), but odds are good I'll end up on pfsense again
What language is HA written in?
ok, got it
single letter var names ๐คข
@light trout i'll look into namespace, thanks. just started reading the python docs yesterday and for loops finally clicked
where did the link go?
heh just wait until you see list comprehension loops
domains = [
x.get("sys_domain")
for x in self.snow_companies
if x["sys_id"] == company
]
single letter var names ๐คข
hard to immediately tell what you're working with
ah yeah from a review perspective it's bad, but if it's just for me ๐คทโโ๏ธ
but yeah i could see looking back at it in a year and also going ๐ค
for when you are looking at it again in 3weeks it's also bad
"man, who wrote this code? it sucks. Fuck that guy" <looking at code i wrote 2mo ago>
been there (daily)
yup
no docstring? wtf man
# pylint: disable=missing-docstring ๐
but you can limit the commenting you need by using descriptive variables
yeah, like x, b and y
foo, bar
even better
love me some foo, bar
var1
var2
i started reading the docs last night and got here: https://docs.python.org/3/tutorial/controlflow.html#more-on-defining-functions
big brain is s1 d2
but yeah, list comprehension is fun
and they never saw him again
for loops clicked and the while statement reminded me of my days with BASIC lol
usually if you need a while, your code is bad
good to know
Exception to the rule:
while human.sober:
drink_beer()
lol and wrap that with a with fridge.beers > 0
but yeah python will be my first real programming language, so we'll see how it goes
its a decent one to start with
i'm hoping to actually contribute to forbidden topic at some point
๐
but it actually would be nice to know for work too
sometimes i have to do the same thing in multiple files
@light trout if you're making fun of me for using the Hassio installer at least i'm running Raspbian + Hassio lol
and i've been making python venvs for stuff
for simple command line tools
yes
figured it'd be valuable to get comfortable with python venvs
dockerfiles are way more portable and upgradable then a venv
but i'll definitely learn how to actually use docker
Change one number, and you updated from python 3.5 to 3.8
i know about python upgrade woes with venvs
Same thing can take hours with vevns
though if your dockerfile-fu isn't great, your builds can take for freaking ever too
sure, but should still be faster
keep in mind i'm still a n00b with these things so what's simple knowledge to you guys likely isn't for me
i'll for sure spin up some new containers for stuff
instead of using venvs
bye bye /venv directory ๐ฆ
venvs have their place
while human.sober:
if fridge.beers > 0:

Better now @wet pilot ?
haha
i'm lucky if a beer lasts 15 minutes
just wanted to throw the context manager in there to throw off @scenic radish
you need better beer then Tediore
90m IPA?
When you just squeezed a two meter cabinet in the back of your Volvo, but you are a fat bastard
the steeringwheel in on the wrong side
followed @light trout 's loop too much?
if not then die
Two one meter cabinets lockable for free
Great for the chemicals in the house + baby
Timeout just got real
Hmmm that wasn't a bad idea

I can lock ludeeus in there until he fixes whatever code he broke last
Nice, my January calender is almost full already
That said, I'm two whole weeks in the US
i want to convert this bare sensor value from FAN1 | 41h | ok | 29.1 | 1400 RPM to simply 1400 RPM
jesus christ. tmobile still has a major outage in the netherlands
what happened to redundancy?
i work for a different ISP. we have double local redundancy, redundant power, uplink and hardware. we also have a seperate reduntant location in a different datacenter we can switch over to within 2 ms. ridiculous how t-mobile doesn't have any redundancy
Maybe they were hit by the new malware I've heard about today
what malware?
looks like you were ok if running a 32-bit system
Thank goodness, my windows 2000 is safe
whew

they must have known you have enough problems if you're on a system like that
I think I have to put a calorie roof on my trip to the US, so I don't come back in two seats on the plane
๐
'sup @peak cloud
Hola!
@clear ferry I see what you mean about untangle being a shite product... back to pfsense tonight
Dale3h, mr implant
@peak cloud how's it been?
Not too shabby. I finally have a fully automated home again ๐
We all break our homes constantly
That is why we have this support group
Hi my name is Eirik I'm an automationoholic
seriously... what to do... blue iris build, NodeMCU smart blinds, IR blaster remote automation, rewire all my wall switches, Mycroft server/Pis build out, etc. And I'm not even fully moved into the house yet...
probably finish moving in first lol
Soon.

I had the house re-piped when I moved in, today is drywall day 1/2
so starting tomorrow the place won't look like a construction site / war zone
@flat thunder smart blinds, you say?
to shreds, you say?
Yes. Got the parts, haven't done anything with them yet. Looking at this guide: https://github.com/thehookup/Motorized_MQTT_Blinds
though a switch for local control was on my wish list, I'll check out your guide for sure!
he used the component I wrote when I realized it didn't work yet ๐
mine uses servos
smaller BOM
he mentioned in his video that the servos would whine periodically when holding position, any issues there?
I never got around to doing the up/down as I couldn't get access to a lathe to try making pulleys
yeah, make your code move the blinds and then disable the servo
tada
those servos, always complaining about everything
"I wasn't able to do what you told me to do"
i don't wanna hold this position
wah wah wah
it's uncomfortable
it makes me jittery
@flat thunder I assume since you linked that page that you've got a 3d printer
Not yet. Pretty sure I'm getting one in a week and a half though
I'm pretty new to the world of embedded / motors
I watched a video a while back
if you disbale a servo, will it hold its position?
unless whatever it's holding has enough torque to override it, yes
I use fat metal gear high torque servos
they're noisy
but they don't move, even with heavy wood blinds like mine
are you relying on an implied initial position? or do you have some way of definitively determining its position when you start it up?
Yeah, most of my blinds are 2" wood venetian
it's a servo, it only goes so far
so if you lose track of where it is, close or open and you know where it's at
Ah, so that's basically irrelevant with servos
did you ever get raise/lower working? I probably won't bother, but curious
the only way mine get "lost" is if someone overrides the servos by manually forcing a position change
I had everything but the pulley/sheave figured out
I found some 12V high torque gear motors that were strong enough to pull the weight but couldn't find a lathe so I could make the sheaves
I couldn't 3d print ones that were strong enough and the timing pulleys I got that'd fit in the blinds didn't have enough shoulder to hold the cord as it rolled up
Meh. I never raise my blinds anyways. Would be different if I had verticals at a door or something.
What did your cost per blind come out to?
and how loud are you talking? If I want to open blinds at sunrise, would the servo wake me up before the sunlight?
then my dog got its head caught in the wire and freaked out and ripped it all apart
and I haven't fixed it ๐
how heavy of a sleeper are you?
you can hear the servos in my videos
I think they're linked on those pages

not that heavy by sunrise. I'll check the vids
@last dirge This is what I've been working on the past couple of weeks: https://www.reddit.com/r/esp8266/comments/e8ms61/christmas_lights_powered_by_wled/
๐คฆโโ๏ธ didn't realize that breadboard photo was a video and not just a pic
@peak cloud neat
I punted on my LED strip project because I kept running into issues with losing signal to parts
I've been wanting to do year-round lights for like 9 years, and I finally buckled down and started on them.
I tried cheap DMX amps and it didn't fix the problem
Were you using WS281X LED strips?
Hmm, interesting. What microcontroller?
nodemcu
Firmware?
WLED is king. ๐
my problem is my strips aren't contiguous
It somehow balances the processing power to give priority to the timing required by the WS281X LEDs.
so I have like 8' then I've got one cabinet that's higher
so I have to break the strip, go up there, then it goes back down for another 4'
then I've got my pantry in the way so I have to run down the wall, across the basement, back up another wall, then another 8' of strips
Ahh, dang.
that last strip almost never works properly
Due to voltage drop or data timing?
how's WLED deal with control?
By control, what do you mean?
Well, it supports many control interfaces.
E1.31, MQTT, Philips Hue, Alexa, HTTP, Web UI, Home Assistant, scheduling, etc.
Wled 4 lyfe, i have three projects with it right now
And it has a native sync feature, so you can sync multiple controllers ๐
wait
The e.31 support is a great feature too for future synchro shows
multiple controllers?
I've got wemos boards coming out of my ears
I'll definitely look into that
DMX too if memory serves right
My two favorite things about WLED: 1) the insane number of effects, combined with the decoupling of colors (the effects use palettes instead of selecting colors), and 2) when you stop sending E1.31 data to it, it reverts to its previous state.
if I can say "this strip has X LEDs" and then "this controller picks up at the end of that" I'd be golden
Not entirely DMX, but it supports sACN.
Oh right
mmm dmx
I may try flashing this firmware and seeing if that makes any difference
Oh, I left out a physical button and IR receiver for the control interfaces.
@wet pilot whatchall really want
It is literally life-changing.
i have a fondness for dmx from when i did community theater
I'm working on a 4-channel WLED controller right now.
Oh, and another control interface I forgot to mention: UDP broadcast. ๐
UDP๐คข
lol
What's that, I didn't get it ๐
UDP over wifi ๐คฎ
@peak cloud in your example could you have channel 1 start an effect, then channel 2 pick up afterward?
like if you were doing a larson scanner?
the sync stuff in the docs seem to make it indicate that they'd be clones of one another
@clear ferry might run into issues with the far side
@last dirge I believe that's how the sync feature works, but I haven't used it.
You just create more universes
@peak cloud meaning it'd continue or just be a clone?
UDP has its place, and sACN/E1.31 is definitely one of those since it's such a high-rate/lightweight protocol.
I haven't tried it yet
somebody intrested to help me out with configuring my unifi setup ? (mainly vlans and firewall) i will give you an gift card
I would assume that if you have the universes setup correctly, the sync feature would continue. But I haven't any experience with it.
I've got enough crap laying around I could just try it ๐
Dooooo eeeeet
@frosty stone Sorry, I don't have any experience with UniFi, although I do hope to one day!
@last dirge If the native sync option isn't what you want, just setup E1.31 sequencing. ๐
a wemos is definitely cheaper than all of the DMX amps I tried
@peak cloud I'll try this later and report back ๐
Good luck, man. If you have any questions about any of it, feel free to PM me.
@last dirge Make sure you use a logic level shifter! Do you have any?
Can servos do full turns? Idk if there's a worm gear in there, but I have to turn the rod 13x to go from one extreme to the other
Another option is to toss a diode between 5V and 3.3V lines and send that to a sacrificial LED's 5V line.WLED has the option to skip the first LED if you end up going with this method.
@flat thunder https://youtu.be/zZGkkzMBL28
You can either modify an existing servo, or order a continuous rotation servo. ๐
so what prompted thehookup to use a stepper motor rather than a servo? Just didn't like the noise?
74AHCT125N/74HCT125N, or a PCB-based one?
steppers have the advantage of knowing where they are which servos don't, right?
I almost burned my first stepper motor by running 3x the amperage specified and didn't know it uses power in idle as well, lol
Lol, I definitely started doing that after a few projects that required too much work to "borrow" stuff from.
I just looked up the estimated voltage drop, and if you use a 24awg wire as the data wire between two sets that are even 10ft apart, the voltage drop wouldn't be enough to cause any issues: https://www.calculator.net/voltage-drop-calculator.html?material=copper&wiresize=84.22&voltage=5&phase=dc&noofconductor=1&distance=10&distanceunit=feet&eres=0.5&x=86&y=16
Smarter Shopping, Better Living! Aliexpress.com
that's the TTL converter I got
says I ordered 1 lot and there's 5 in a lot
so I've got some kicking around somewhere
I haven't used those, only the DIP-14 ones.
I'm using 18AWG on my extensions
and between the really long one I've got another 12V power supply injecting the power back in
I don't know if I've got enough LED strip to do a useful test though
guess you have to buy more then ๐
the spec sheet google turned up for a wemos d1 says it'll take 12V
is that right?
I've been using buck converters
try it, what's the worse that can happen... I've run a couple of nodemcus at 12V even though it's not recommended
Let the magic smoke be free!
Woop, concert ticket ordered for the dark side of the wall
I presume that's a pink floyd cover band?
Yeah, it's the Nordic pink Floyd experience
That or the drugs really got to them... ๐ต ๐ต all in all, he's just a-nother brick in the moon ๐ต ๐ต
I usually go every year to see Brit Floyd, but I missed them this year
all in all, you are just another failed automation in my home
That implies you have some that work
we don't need no automation ๐ธ we don't need no home control
all in all you're just a normal switch in the wall
you there in the scenes.yaml, you don't look right to me, get him up against the wall
heh
Story of my life
and that's why we have linting rules and git hooks ๐
i'm anxious waiting on the builder to come fix some things in the house so i can go cut out gang boxes and upgrade my switches!!!!!
I still gotta figure out where my phantom switches are wired
and see about hard wiring my switched outlets
which are everywhere, some on dimmers
i got lucky and most of mine are pretty clear
I got a label maker for stupid cheap, I've been labeling stuff as I figure it out
i've been switching out the painted over outlets and whenever i find the ones that are switched i flip them upside-down
ooh, that's a good idea
makes it pretty clear ๐
though, long term any outlets I'd want switched are getting replaced with a zwave switch and/or outlet
only thing i'm not super consistent with is setting which one of the 2 outlets is switched. They're using split lines on them
If you run a Debian or Ubuntu box, install mollyguard. It's on my default list and it just saved my ass again ๐
Basically, it asks you to type the hostname of the box if you attempt to reboot/powerdown/halt etc. over an ssh session
Huh. Might have to install that
Just saved me from rebooting a remote bastion box by accident. The box I was attempting to reboot killed the ssh session due to load and I had hit sudo reboot on the bastion itself without realising!
More like me
but can it prevent hangover brain from pulling the plug on your access point in the middle of a dd-wrt firmware upgrade?
because I totally didn't do that on Saturday
on the bright side, I now have a better AP running Tomato, with VLANs and like 6 SSIDs
@flat thunder Put an electric fence around the router ๐
Worth
marry a photosensor, I hear it's a turn on for them
Heh
Rgb is for plebs
If you don't have at least six different coloured diodes you're doing it wrong
My computer has CYMK
you dont know me
spaghetti
My wife would probably cut my you know whats off if I tried to install RGB lighting. And I am kinda happy that she would ๐คฃ. RGB lightning is a whole other level of rabbit hole. I kinda like clean and classy automation
HA is gonna be the ruin of me for one off jokes for parties... https://share.getcloudapp.com/kpum5kvK
Has anyone ever used lenovo tabs as cheap wall panels
@hushed basalt I am using two tab m10s one on the dock (not using alexa but could use alexa with the dock/speaker) and one on the wall - on sale for like $79 right now
10 inch screen is great, and I use the dock speaker for notifications about things like the tea being ready or the dryer turning off
1GB ram
Are you using them with lovelace
@wet pilot from the official python docs:
>>> squares = []
>>> for x in range(10):
... squares.append(x**2)
...
>>> squares
[0, 1, 4, 9, 16, 25, 36, 49, 64, 81]
should i complain about the single character variable? ๐
yeah i'm jk
when i finalize that for loop from earlier i'm gonna do for entity in states probably
state in states
makes sense
sometimes its not worth the effort though
these docs are... not n00b friendly lol
x in range() is pretty common
just gonna throw myself in the fire like i did with forbidden topic
It is a style thing, but in the same way that I write variables in camel case and column names in snake case and envs in upper snake case I write the objects being iterated over as single char var names
yeah, that breaks all the python conventions
since it's the only place it's easy to tell at a glance that that variable is a specific variable
oh boy, i'm in list comprehensions now ๐ฌ
When I iterate entities/states in Jinja I use the variable x. ๐ค
jinja doesn't have a style guide and enforcement mechanism ๐
It does when Iโm typing it! Lol
I use k/v or i depending on if it's a map or not
If you're looking for a language to learn try golang btw
it's a party
@hushed basalt yes with stock lovelace and some custom cards as well, no problems running fully kiosk
i looked at golang, disappointed they didn't want try/except flows
Is Golang the same as Go? And isnโt whatever SmartThings apps are written in, a derivative of Go?
Is groovy a golang derivative?
predates i think
I didnโt enjoy groovy at all. Glad I found Home Assistant before I got too deep into SmartThings
Go is Google's JSโฆ C# is Microsoft's Java. D is the next evolution of C++. And Rust is, wellโฆ odd.
lol
But then again, Iโm not a huge fan of C#, but loved VB (pre-.NET). ๐คฃ
Oh to be a script kiddie again.
oh gawdโฆ no wonder you like JavaScript. you're one of those typesโฆ
I am proud to be one of those types! ๐
yeahโฆ they all are. you have my deepest condolencesโฆ
Hey! At least I am open to trying new things!
Any of those are new things?
any thoughts on julia? i think its trying to take on python
oooh, there's one i haven't triedโฆ
Python is new to me as of a few years ago. And lately have been trying to learn how to design PCB boards.
PCB's are only fun, until you start trying to actually make something proper.
heh
ATM machine. PIN number. PCB board.
alright, on to dictionaries now. at this point i'm very familiar with key: value pairs
Julie looks more like it's being aimed at R or somethingโฆ?
I have never heard of Juli[ae].
Which is probably why I didn't notice it. Have a vague feeling I might have run across itโฆ But that group doesn't register very strongly on my radar.
@wet pilot multi returns is much better than try catch
and it has panic so you can still send exceptions up the stack
i saw the argument on the issue but i'm not sure if i agree
I've been writing go for around a year now
it's much much nicer doing modern enterprise work compared to java and etc
esp if you need multi threading
Why do you want a try catch block instead of just checking if an error happened anyways?
I tried to get into Goโฆ Didn't like it terribly much. But compared to Java, yeah, I can see that. But then, there's not much I wouldn't prefer over Javaโฆ
because then you're checking twice. once to raise the error and then again to see if it errored
