@scenic radish what's your review on Chromebook would it be any good or too locked down to Google?

@clever mortar I'm just considering it a bit, as an alternative to my MacBook, as well everthing are more or less through the browser these days

@delicate pollen i like mine. i have the HP Chromebook 15

@scenic radish πŸ˜„ well I'm in the Apple ... but have recently started to use my Google account instead, and I must admit, I'm very happy ... so could also consider with the next phone

How many of you have home alarms?

#

that are actually in daily use

hushed basalt
#

I'm thinking of setting it to arm/disarm automatically depending on the status of our phones

clever mortar
#

Convenient, as long as you don't also have a smart lock linked to that phone

#

Otherwise having your phone == full access to the house

hushed basalt
#

Nah :D

#

Although for 99.999% of people their keys also mean full access to their house

#

And they can get taken just as easily as phones

#

If not more easily

#

I'll probably set up an NFC reader for my front door when I have a house,

#

But most day to day ingress/egress would be through the garage

#

The way I think I'd have it.

  • open the interior garage door, the lights turn on
  • interior door swings close automatically, electronic strike locks on close
  • press a button by the door, opens the garage door
  • hop in car, drive through the open garage door
  • safety beam sensors on garage door get broken, door is programmed to close 5 seconds after being clear
  • drive away, door shuts automatically
  • phone disappears on unifi AP, alarm armed
#

And basically the same in reverse

#

Open garage door with standard GDO in car, drive in, door closes automatically, HA detects Bluetooth of car, unlocks interior door

orchid rose
#

Lots of steps where the logic might fail if there's something different you need to do

hushed basalt
#

How so

orchid rose
#

Well the most obvious issues would be phone running out of battery or car BT not connecting etc. But also something stuff like someone walking out of the garage causing the door to automatically close etc

hushed basalt
#

Phone runs out of battery, the google TTS would tell me the alarm is being armed status pending

#

And I could disarm it with a tablet or computer

#

If the bluetooth doesn't pickup I just have to unlock the interior door another way

#

Walking out without keys and getting locked out is something that can happen to anyone, anywhere.

orchid rose
#

My HA stuff is pretty limited, but in general the biggest issues I've had, have been stuff turning off at wrong times so I usually try to avoid any needlessly complicated automations that turn off stuff

#

if a light turns on when you don't need it, is not a huge issue, but it turning off can be πŸ™‚

hushed basalt
#

It's really just 4 or 5 very simple separate automations

#

But by their powers combined, they become CAPTAIN PLANET

#

And to be honest the only critical one is the garage door closing automatically

#

And that's handled internally by the garage door opener itself. Plus i have sensors to alert me it's left open for too long

scenic radish
#

personally, i don't want anything related to my doors locking/unlocking or garage opening/closing (IF I HAD ONE) to be automated, i want manual control for those things

hushed basalt
#

The chance of HA falsely reporting closed is much lower than the chance of me driving away and leaving it open

scenic radish
#

but you do you, boo 😘

hushed basalt
#

The opening is manual

#

And the automatic unlocking is an interior door so lower risk

scenic radish
#

ah gotcha. you said

And basically the same in reverse

The benefit of twist ties is they are insulated

I imagine the sleeve also make sure of the connectivity

clear ferry

@scenic radish well, if you don't do it you get eaten by a polar bear

scenic radish
#

ah

clear ferry
#

And they go, we told you so

scenic radish
#

that would be worse than being eaten by the bear

clear ferry
#

Also, you aren't allowed to die or be born on Svalbard

scenic radish
#

that doesn't sound right, but i don't know enough about svalbard to dispute it

unreal orbit

@scenic radish good call on that Fossil watch. I think I'm gonna get one soon πŸ‘

scenic radish
#

@clever mortar you were right... notifications only from 13 select apps...

Tinkerer is away for 6m 11s with a message :point_right: There isn't a way things should be. There's just what happens, and what we do.

scenic radish
#

thankfully those issues can be fixed with a software upd8

unreal orbit
#

Yeah none of those are deal-breaking for me. Gmail uses HTML5 notification, I wonder if anything using HTML5 would work

scenic radish
#

and fossil has a good return policy if you don't like it

#

they include a pre-paid return label in the box

unreal orbit
#

As long as I get text/call notifications that's all I really care about

#

I want to see if it's worth pulling out my phone when it goes off

scenic radish
#

assuming your texting app is supported...

#

i'm not sure how ominous this really is though

unreal orbit
#

notifications per app is just.... strange. Why would they not tie directly into Android notifications?

scenic radish
#

exactly, who knows

wet pilot
#

might not have access?

scenic radish
#

i'm under the impression that pebble (and other smartwatches) just intercept the text from notifications and format it for the watch

#

notification access is a permission on android

wet pilot
#

right, but google has been locking that one down quite a bit lately

scenic radish
#

Maybe...I mean, you can set it yourself if the app wants it

unreal orbit
#

It shouldn't be a permission issue.

scenic radish
#

yup

#

i'm still gonna buy one and return it if i don't like it

clear mirage
#

So I've been wondering... what would be the easiest way to get a particular sports teams score into HA as sensor?

scenic radish
clever mortar
#

That's.... annoying about the Fossil, but, I'll wait and see how it goes

#

I don't mind the lack of apps though, I barely use anything other than weather and media controls

scenic radish
#

same, don't care about the apps at all

#

notifications are the deal breaker for me if they don't make it more general

#

like... if i can't see telegram and abode notifications then no go

clever mortar
#

Telegram, WhatsApp, Hangouts, Calendar, GMail... and a bunch of travel related apps

#

insert airline here

scenic radish
#

insert 99% of the apps i use here

#

what about my reddit notifications?! 😭

and discord!!

Has anyone had much success using a surface pro 3 as a tablet interface.. any good software for wake on motion for front camera? or other good stuff. All i got now is chrome browser in fullscren

slim rampartBOT

dynoError That role no longer exists.

hushed basalt

@white radish you could put ubuntu on it

#

It might make it easier to automate some stuff

#

In theory

white radish

hmm i saw someone else on reddit did that. but not sure how i coudl take advantage

i see i have options to turn the screen on and off. that seems like what i want. not just to see if can get the front camera involved to trigger it

My router does not appear to like when I try to set a static IP address on my laptop with Debian server. I had to let it assign my laptop the bullshit IP address that I don't want and do a DHCP reservation

hushed basalt
#

Debian is crap with dhcp for some reason

scenic radish
#

But if I try to set a static IP on the laptop, my router at some point stops seeing my laptop on the network even though I can Home Assistant in my browser using the static IP

#

And can ping the router from the laptop

hushed basalt
#

I'm sure some "enthusiastic" person on the linuc discord will have a reason why it's superior

#

Even though have my dns namespace stuff doesn't work on ubuntu, and works on everything else

#

So i have to use workarounds that make everything less good

scenic radish
#

Any clue why that might be happening? It honestly seems like my router

hushed basalt
#

What is the problem

scenic radish
#

I've let my router assign it a bullshit IP and all seems well

#

Look above a bit

hushed basalt
#

My guess it's the assigned gateway in the dhcp lease

#

When you say your router stops seeing it on the network

#

What exactly do you mean

scenic radish
#

I go to the page where I can see all connected devices and it doesn't appear anymore

#

But accessing at the static IP I assign on the laptop works

hushed basalt
#

Connected devices usually only shows devices assigned by dhcp

scenic radish
#

Except my port forwarding rule stops working so bye bye remote access

hushed basalt
#

Can you just use dhcp with static lease anyways

scenic radish
#

I go to port forwarding rules and I see the rule but with "unavailable" next to the device name

hushed basalt
#

What router are you using

scenic radish
#

Google WiFi lol

#

Never had this issue before

#

I moved my home assistant setup from my pi to an old laptop

hushed basalt
#

Can you assign your port forward by strictly typing in an ip

#

Rather than selecting a device

scenic radish
#

I just want it to be 192.168.87.2 but I have to let my router assign 192.168.87.40 😒

#

For some stupid reason, no

hushed basalt
#

It's probably some google thing

#

"devices" would only be devices allocated a dhcp lease too

scenic radish
#

.40 is the start of the DHCP pool

hushed basalt
#

Can you just change the dhcp lease assignment

#

I can do it on tomato

scenic radish
#

I've tried but for some reason after restarting networking, bringing enp5s0 back up, and even rebooting the host it never picks up the new IP

#

It stays on .40 or it gets FUBAR again

#

I've power cycled my router like 10 fucking times in the last 2 hours too lol

hushed basalt
#

I'm wondering if I'm just fucking up my /etc/network/interfaces file or something

hushed basalt
#

You could get a thin client pfsense box

#

Use the google as an AP only

scenic radish
#

But I'm following the official Debian guide on setting a static IP

#

But then no mesh

hushed basalt
#

Can't it mesh without being a gateway?

#

That sounds dumb

scenic radish
#

It can't be in bridge mode

#

Which is what I'm assuming you're saying by using it as an access point only

#

Yep, it's all happy now that I let it assign an IP. Who fucking knows lol

#

Thanks for listening to my rant

hushed basalt
#

All good
