lol
Hm... I guess I need a new one
@scenic radish what's your review on Chromebook would it be any good or too locked down to Google?
I have one, quite happy with it
It has access to any app on the play store, right?
@clever mortar I'm just considering it a bit, as an alternative to my MacBook, as well everthing are more or less through the browser these days
Perfect for college students. But they'd rather spend $2500 on a Macbook
If everything you do can be done primarily through a browser, then it's a great device
@delicate pollen i like mine. i have the HP Chromebook 15
The new MacBook 16" with an i9 looks good, wonder if we get them at work
i have a stupid cheap samsung that's ok but i wasn't expecting much for ~$200
@scenic radish oki, will check it out
i'm in the google/android ecosystem already too so it makes sense
i think the intel m# cpus should be the minimum if you want a decent device
I have a 8core2.5ghz laptop with 48gb ram and 2x ssds, I pick my Chromebook most days
and all the recent chromebooks have a linux VM built in now
no need to mess with crostini
is that what replaced cruton?
@scenic radish π well I'm in the Apple ... but have recently started to use my Google account instead, and I must admit, I'm very happy ... so could also consider with the next phone
My laptop was $2500, my Chromebook $180
@wet pilot i'm not sure... i know it is a debian 9 VM
@scenic radish VM built - could you explain a bit more?
But so much nicer to work on in day to day business
it has a linux terminal that you can enable, and you can install debian packages
The Apple vs Google debate is far more complicated than most people will admit. You're always giving up something
@scenic radish okiii π well I knew that it was somewhat a linux, but that it would be possible to use it, I didn't
TANSTAAFL - if it's free, they're making money somewhere else
i like "If its free, you're the product"
Looks suspiciously at Home Assistant
fuck
I'm your product senpai
eh, open source is generally the exception
I know, just joking π
I have a dream that one day most things will be required to be open source
McCartherism increases
that is probably the dirty hippie in me talking π
realistically it would save major corporations boatloads of money. That's why so many of them are investing in open source platforms now
Don't have to pay anyoneDon't have to keep people on payroll, and out pops a product you can use as you wish
though corpos need to allow their teams to contribute back to upstream
which can get weird in some cases
I think it gets weird due to licensing laws being so complicated. Those could be simplified
Just need the intern to push all their corporations forks to origin
do it
I'm sure corporate developers never put secrets in source right, right
heh
Open source also forces good practices for secrets. The benefits are endless π
secrets: !include secrets.yaml
Root account aws keys are the best to put on github
@hushed basalt Lucky those are catched by GitHub nowadays π
@junior forge where there's an idiot proof system there's an idiot who will prove you wrong
I tried to proof the idiot wrong
failed
@hushed basalt But I agree, it ain't hard...
β€οΈ open source
I love open source with good documentation and tutorials
The amount of times I've had to read source to figure out how something works π
Euro timezones are the worse
America is better because its 12-15 hours behind me
But 8 hours difference is a killer
heh but everyone can agree that IST is the worst
Omfg.... @wet pilot and @unreal orbit in the same screen. I know this is stupid, but I confuse you two.....might be the icons....seeing both of you on the same screen....may have solved it for me.....as you were
O.o
But I'm still purple π
You're both impossibly good looking?
Itβs not a rational thing....it is just a thing.
Really really ridiculously good looking
Apparently dudes like you
The files are in the computer!
That hansels so hot right now
Whiskerz, did you figure out your girlfriends iOS problems ?
O_o
Looks a bit different back then aye
I'm not entirely sure who that is
Vampire from true blood and also the recent tarzan
If Iβm not mistaken
Also the son of stellan skarsgΓ₯rd who is in the MCU films
#funfacts
I know Stellan from Chernobyl and Mamma Mia!
Yes that much beloved masterpiece mamma Mia!!
Who can go past the wonderful singing of Pierce Brosnan
currently installing debian on a free partition of my old windows laptop
why am i doing this at 22:40 on a work night? who knows
lol DOIT
now i need to figure out how to configure it to shut down below a certain battery level during a power outage...
once debian is installed that is
@scenic radish does work night make a difference?
I haven't distinguished between work night and weekend my entire life

so you said you like your chromebook too?

lol
the only thing that was holding me back from buying one was the lack of a numeric keypad
then HP came thru with the Chromebook 15
I have an 11" one
Last time I actively used a numpad was... 1999
For those excel induced orgasms
lmao
i do enjoy that i can use the chromebook recovery tool to flash any image to usb sticks, sd cards, etc
Aye
I can use it for 99% of my daily work too
Handy on business flights with its size and battery life too
yeah the battery life on mine is unreal
hp claims 13 hours. honestly wouldn't be surprised if that were the case
I get 11ish on mine with normal use
welp the screen went black on my laptop but i'm still seeing disk activity
i don't remember seeing the installer say anything
oh nvm
the display timed out lol
not sure why it just displays a black screen instead of turning the backlight off though...

that fucking emoji lol
oof
lol sick burn

Welp it doesn't look like I can boot into windows anymore despite using the unused partition lmao
Oh well
Speaking of boot issues. My Ubuntu machine wonβt boot if I take out the graphics card! π€£
Put it back in and she boots
But do you have any other graphics adapter in the machine ?
Not sure what you mean. Itβs a nvidia card I put it for testing nonsense stuff
The card is toast so I canβt keep it in
Any onboard graphics?
Modern machines usually won't boot without any primary video output
Yes the motherboard has onboard. It booted fine before I put the card in. I think itβs nvidia drivers issue
Google said it might be
@clear ferry actually i think ancient ones too from what i recall
I remember I could run machines without graphics cards in the late 90s but damn if it was possible to bypass keyboard on some of them
"no keyboard found, press F1 to boot"
I think you're mistaken but who knows.
@clear ferry ah thanks lol

@scenic radish L2GRUB
Lilo 4 lyfe
@tough igloo check your bios settings too
You might need to enable onboard vga etc
@wet pilot wut
Grub. L2 it
@wet pilot grub him by the boot loader?
Go back to your box
lol
That red blinking light isn't good
Some coloured tape can fix that, or a soldering iron to change which LED gets lit up
Worst shit I saw was what supermicro does
Red blinking HDD led means hot spare
Like wtf
Freezing rain, good times
Good luck dodging the idiots still in summer tyres...
As low as that... I'm actually impressed
Should I count the Slovenian trucks also you say?
I was just passed by a car with decals showing ads for Eaton xcomfort
Thanks to wireless technology, the switches can be easily glued to the desired location. As a result, the installations can be modified or upgraded at any time.
π€

I remember Eaton from way back when they were just power folks
(at least that's all I ever saw of them)
Based on my experience of that, not sure I'd trust any HA stuff they did π
Thanks @hushed basalt Iβll give it a go tonight
When the smoke clears!
Itβs Ubuntu server so there is no desktop. I put the card in to test ha stream because reasons
I donβt remember π
Anyhoo Iβll try all the things and see where I end up
It's possible your bios automatically flipped to pcie graphics when you installed the card
π€·
Summer tyres...
Such a foreign concept
I'm not sure you can buy studded tyres here. Just getting winter (or even all-season) tyres can be a struggle.
"all-season" tyres... that's cute
I had a car with those things once... couldn't get out of my driveway half of the year because it was sloping towards the house.
Thankfully our weather isn't that extreme
We're more likely to get stuck in hot tar
Here, it's more important just to have good tyres with decent thead for the inevitable rain all year around.
Scottish weather options in spring/summer/autumn:
Has just been raining. Is currently raining. Will rain shortly.
Best tires I've found are offered by a garage down near my parents where he'll happily state he prefers good tires which won't have neighbors coming back to him complaining, I forget the brand though.
This is getting so.. "tyred"
Roll on the weekend
So lets preorder Cyberpunk
Thats everyone's choice π
hey guys!
Wanted some advice
With the upcoming BlackFriday deals, I'm curious what would be better
I currently have around 5 Echo Dots around my house, a Hive heating and Ring doorbell.
The Nest Hello is clearly the better doorbell, and i wouldn;t mind a Nest Thermstat. Whats your recomendations
This is since I'm in the HA ecosystem too
You can't hook up new Nest devices to HA
Also, this is strictly a #330944238910963714 question π
I've just spun up my own solution with a Xiaomi smart button as a doorbell, my RTSP camera as a door camera, all my google homes and sonos' and webos and telegram as doorbell notifications with sounds on most, and picture on telegram
Thief
I invented the xiaomi button as a doorbell
I am the first and only person in the world to do that
Your invoice for the license is in the mail
Can't send it electronically since there's no internet in Australia

SEND IT VIA BOOOOSHFIAAAHS

No fires here
It turns out that the continent is bigger than one coast
When you Northerners talk about the world as if the Northern hemisphere is the entire universe, and Australians get miffed
π
That's how us westerners feel when Easterners talk about their side as The Australia
I don't want the throne
I DON WANN ITH
so i guess i shouldn't be surprised by this, but debian runs much faster than windows 10 does on my laptop from 2011
to give a good example of the difference in disk intensity
I had a 12" ultraportable a few years ago, with a 4200RPM drive
booting Windows took 12 minutes
booting linux took 25 seconds
Well, that's a bit unfair. Windows has a mountain of crap that it starts which Linux doesn't bother with π
Any OS without a GUI is faster than windows
debian desktop
TBH, Linux with GUI is still faster than Windows in my experience
Oh you installed it wrong
@clear ferry that's pretty nuts lol
deez nuts
@boreal pewter eh, i'm moving from a pi so i doubt i'll notice a difference
GOT EEEEEEM
shit, I've done a lot of changes in HA the last month
I should probably update my github
Huh? If it has a GUI it is not a server. So what did you move from the Pi?
i can still install home assistant on it lol
It's considered dirty to run HA on a Desktop
i know what i've done.
So your prefer it the wrong way? π
yup
but nah i'm testing everything out right now before i actually move my install to it
so there's still time for me to install debian server π
Going to copy over my question from #diy-archived
I have a shelly 1 with stock firmware (this may be a sign that i need to change that) that works great... when its connected to wifi. It has now disconnected from wifi 2 times this week after working for about 5wks without issue.
I see some forum posts that it may be due to my router changing channels on it... "esp-open-rtos issue". Last time I just turned off power and re-set up the wifi... but i don't want to keep doing this. Any suggestions? If I do upgrade - is tasmota my best bet?
@orchid rose mentioned it may be due number of wifi connections I have as I've recently added 4 new connection
Has anybody seen any good home automation deals coming up for black friday?
There will be thousands
i'm hoping the fossil collider goes on sale
after trying four smartwatches and returning them, i'm hoping the collider finally replaces my pebble
~crosspost @vapid mirage π
@vapid mirage Please DO NOT cross post. Read the channel description, post it and wait for folks to respond.
I think DrZzs Discord has a deals channel, some of the others may too
That watch looks awesome @scenic radish
Random tagging fail there
woops
Discord isn't like IRC, you don't have to tag people on every response. Keep in mind that every time you tag somebody, they get a notification ping. That can very quickly become annoying and people may block you.
The person right before you was talking about it and I got confused... no need to bring hassbot into it.
@tepid coyote yeah i think it's cool. can't wait to try it out
i doubt it'll go on sale since it's brand new but i'd hate myself if i bought it right away and it went on sale a few weeks later
I tried out the gen4 but the battery life was a killer for me. I like that this one says 2+weeks
that's interesting!
yeah, the e-ink display is the primary reason for that
Ahh so that's why you want to replace your pebble w/ it.
exactly
i like the readability of e-ink in all scenarios (with a backlight for low-light conditions)
and i specifically like round smartwatches
but not with a flat tire
Yeah the fossil ones look the best imo
I can't believe more companies haven't jumped on e-ink for watches. It's so obviously the best choice currently
i know
nobody wants to plugin their watch every night...
Yes!!! This
well technically pebble used low-power transflective LCDs but... similar concept
still better battery life
Interesting. Whatever gets the battery life to a reasonable level
exactly
i do have to charge my pebble time round each night because the battery is 4 years old...
but at least it takes like 30 minutes lol
@unreal orbit apple watch users do, twice a day π
oof
Using a Garmin Fenix. The battery meter measures remaining battery in days π
I get 33 days here

it's ok, discord's back bois
It was never gone, just hiding
maybe we scared it
with our knowledge
i'll take my broadlink rm mini, thx
but that title... π
just picked up my new xiaomi tv box from the postal office
another one for my xiaomi collection
I need a creative solution to a generic automation problem....
I have an automation that brightens my master bath lights to 5% if I get up in the middle of the nighht to pee
Better there?
Yeah, home assistant related things are off topic here
Check the channel topics π
Got it. Thanks.
Pieeee
is there a channel/server where I can speak to graphic designers?
On this server, this would be the place to ask
This is unlikely to be a good place to reach lots of graphic designers though
Hullo Y'all
hey people, is anyone here good with ubuntu ?
with vlans
Thank you Google, very cool
<test>
You will die in ( {death_datetime} - datetime.now() )
This was from a save the date my fiancee got. Legit want to do this, but with YAML
oh js
trigger:
- platform: time
at: '15:00:00'
on: '12-12-2020'
action:
- service: wedding.marry
data:
people:
- Matt
- Andy
Yes, I know on doesn't exist for that
That code is useless as a save the date. If I ran it I wouldn't remember that it was their wedding until I got a random alert saying "We Do!" and I would think my browser was possessed. π
Does anyone have any iBeacon experience?
Only crispy for me
Ibacon π₯
I have an error sending pictures on Telegram. The error says "Too many requests. Try again in 32 seconds.". Tried a few times but still wont work. Anybody knows how to fix this?
Did you wait 32 seconds first :D
@hushed basalt yeah. Even tried it after like a few minutes. Still wont send
@clear ferry i was trying to send one picture too
Are you using a vpn
No issues here both personally in telegram and with automations in HA
Heyyyy
Where is the best place to discuss what options there is and what you use in terms of thermostats, doorbells, speakers etc
here or #330944238910963714 probably
Anyone here a Tado user?
unless you want a specific standard like #zigbee-archived or #zwave-archived
For doorbell some of us just use a Xiaomi button and for speakers I've just set up Chromecast devices around the flat.
@hushed basalt nope. Also tried both wifi and mobile data
@clear ferry hmmm thats weird. Will try again later or ask a friend to try.
Why is this Unifi stuff so difficult
i saw the new ada thing and wondered if you couldnt intercept a google home or alexa and change the replies and go thru ada instead?
Yep, I think I've experienced what you're talking about
a good idea how I can populate iptables with a lot of ip's?
using xargs and as far as I can tell this will take forever π
Actually I use a for loop ```
for i in $(cat blocked.list_full)
do
cat $i.zone | xargs -i /sbin/iptables -A countrydroplist -i ens192 -s {} -j DROP ;
done
π€·
20 minuts for 23 countrys π
Yeah I just managed to disable natting
Now I try Port forwarding...
And then I need to find out how to use DNS names here
port forward is easy ... i dont know about dns names
SO first try port forwarding failed π
Zzzzzzz unifi
pfff atxblyat

lol
also installed debian server last night... apparently my ethernet interface isn't eth0
Nope it isn't in Debian already since Wheezy or so
enp3s0
yup
Get out of 2013 @scenic radish
you're so last decade
so abode's latest security system is finally homekit compatible... but for those of us on the first and second gen gateway (i have the first), homekit compatibility will still be coming...

guess i can't complain because the unofficial API used in the abode integration is working well, but i'd still prefer local control with homekit controller
(and i'll leave it at that because technically that last message breaks the rules here)
@scenic radish how happy are you in general with Abode?
very happy, it's been reliable. the app sucks but i hardly use it anyway
nice.... looking for some sensors and home alarm thingies.. just difficult to choose which brand to go with π
i like that there's no monthly fee to self-monitor
@scenic radish e.g. the netatmo camera looks nicer, but still not sure about the entire ecosystem of netatmo though
@scenic radish for integrations... does it have a local API or do you still need to go over the cloud to access the data?
sorry π
np π
you're good. yeah the abode cameras are not good from what i've heard
it's a cloud API
...but that's #330944238910963714 talk π
well.. i saw you talking about abode here.. did not want to drag you to another channel π
all good. abode talk is ok, but once it applies to home assistant (integrations) we'd have to move

...or atx will get A N G E R Y

oh oh... that scares me more than the dog π
that one is friggin hilarious

"Dad, there's a monster under my bed!"
"Oh? What does it want?"
"Wait, I'll ask..."
"Well?"
"It's afraid of the Roomba."
"Really?"
"Yeah. I'll build a Lego wall for it to hide behind."
"Tomorrow."
"But dad!"
"Tomorrow. I'll turn the Roomba off for tonight."
"It says thanks...

I just wanna give my kudos to the developers behind the wonderful features added to the last version and the integration with Almond! My congratulations and thank you for your hard work!!!
Hey Guys, next spring we will move to our own house (after doning a little bit of renovating). I'd like to know what you would do if you can start over with homeautomation from scratch. Is this the right channel for that?
#general-archived would be better, since Home Assistant is kinda off-topic here π
THX, moving over
kinda
π€¨
if you cant figure out how to fucking turn your laptop on dont call me about your stupid email not working
am isp tech
ok so
hey, the settings-button menue is missing after the update to v102. is this a known issue?
MY POWER IS OUT BUY MY INTERNET SHOULD BE WORKING CUS ITS WIRESLESS - customers
@rough zephyr #330944238910963714
this is a random chat channel, wont get much help here
π
@cedar glacier may i apply for a job?
would love answering those questions.
like: Did you double check the wlan cable sir? π
i did a customer service ... that's hell on earth
lying lying and again lying to the customer just for the company's profit π
i did support for a while. no real lying though
still wanted out and am a dev now π
we get paid well
we're a high-end ISP famous for it's customer service, winning award after award
aka we're not a US isp
depends of the customer service purpose i think
dont have any upsell targets or whatever
actually most of the time im downgrading people and getting them better deals while fixing their wifi lmao
no comission either, so we just do what's best for the customer without incentives to break that
lol
the only issue is, a lot of our customers are companies that think we're a business ISP
they're like, 'you cant fix this cut underground fiber within an hour?!!!??! what do i pay you for'
@cedar glacier you might able to help me with an mqtt issue? π
you pay us for 95% uptime
Hell, our national provider can't fix fibre in a week...
i always reply with well you had 456 days of uptime before that, and we're unable to offer you a 1-hour SLA. there's other providers that do that, but that will cost you x10 more lmao
@lilac basalt nah havent got mine to work yet. we got a major outage at work here so im too busy to try now
hell our provider even doesn't know that i can use fiber without their box π
High availability (HA) is a characteristic of a system, which aims to ensure an agreed level of operational performance, usually uptime, for a higher than normal period.
Modernization has resulted in an increased reliance on these systems. For example, hospitals and data cen...
we allow people to use their own hardware, hell i've configured cisco switches for customers before
all under the best effort motto
@cedar glacier as i am not that familiar with fiber .. what hardware do i need?
Γ¬f we dont officially support it, we'll try our best with our knowledge and our google to try and make it work, but dont come running to us pointing fingers if it dont work
lmao
modem i mean
well, our customers mostly use the provided router. technically they still have to use our modem. which is just a converter from fiber to ethernet
those idiots wanna install their anti privacy box in my house .. i said NO they said it's not possible even to use dsl without their box ... but it is ..i am running my own modem with my own router
anything with an ethernet port that can establish a PPPOE connection will work on our fiber
which provider?
i am located in france π
i need a splitter or converter right.. this one has an eenthernet connection for my router?
can't tell you due to my privacy (lotsa people on reddit who dont like me) but it's a dutch one anyway haha
reddit stinks π
this is what we have at our customers houses
well, something similair
fiber goes in, ethernet comes out
no modem needed?
att has something similar for me
or is it included in this wonderbox?
this is the modem, technically
but i need to insert my provider credencials in my router like with dsl right?
should this work with asuswrt merlin?
i want to avoid using their box.. like this i want they attach the fiber to my house with this box and i want to connect those to my router
yeah, that could work depending on the ISP. some ISP's use proprietary shit / wont tell you the PPPoE creds
@clever mortar last week i had a call with a cut fiber line that was fixed within literally 30 minutes lmfao
netherlands rocks!
submitted the ticket, they had someone closeby, ezpz. was a very very lucky event, most of the time it takes 1-3 days
always asking me if I could sniff them
ok.. then i will ask them if they will provide the creds while installing the fiber π
what provider is it?
orange france
but i'll google how to sniff the creds π
can i buy the fiber converter somewhere?
no, that 99% sure wont work for your line and is actually not allowed to be installed by the end user
reason being, if you fuck the fiber up, you're out thousands of euros
you could always ask them if their router does bridgemode
then i sick to DSL π
give them a call and ask about bridgemode
they don't know a shit
those are undereducated idiots reading their answers from a script
i'll go into a "shop" to ask
but i already know the answer : a technician will come around .. break your front of the house and install the proper box.
someone on a forum said they used a router with an SFP connection to use their own router
I can just plug the SFP on my router and roll up raoul. I just do not know if Orange will not come to see me wondering why there is equipment with the wrong mac address on their network.
Bonjour !
is it the livebox you'll be getting?
cus that doesnt have bridge
@lilac basalt ^
I have come across an ISP who would only accept certain mac addresses! Their engineer got very pissed off when I pointed out on a semi public forum that it's possible to fake the mac on a lot of devices π
DSL ? Are you guys calling in from 2008?
arent that almost all devices capible?
Large parts of the UK are still limited to DSL
@clear ferry On DSL here. Still amazed I can get 100/20 on a cable installed in the 40s π
FTTC is still "bleeding edge", and don't get me started on the FTTP "rollout"
@clear ferry Large parts of the world aren't Scandinavia.
I can upgrade to Fibre, but would have to change ISPs. Current ISP is my old employer and I'm still on "Mate's Rates" for the DSL π
Old phone lines are amazing, really. There was actually a time when people could easily set up a complete galvanic connection to the other side of the world, and did so daily.
Handily, I'm on a "Business Connection", and there's no other business on that exchange, so my contention ratio is 1:1 π
It's insane!
If that's a Home Assistant thing... try #general-archived
Yeah, I was only half ironic though, I haven't seen anyone roll out DSL here in years though
That's an #551844176556457984 thingy
@clear ferry In order to make figures look good, the main infra provider in Ireland managed to get Dual Channel ISDN classed as Broadband a while back.
Lets them do those nice coverage maps which look good in reports.
When I lived in Ireland we could only get wireless broadband π€’
Not sure if it's still the case today.
My last ADSL subscription was great. I was almost alone on the trunk.
I still have a 56k serial modem around here somewhere.
Don't think I have anything with a serial port to plug it into....
so random question... what are typical soft drink sizes outside the US? let's say you go to the store and grab a bottle of pop (single serving), what's a typical size?
in the US it's 20 oz (~600 mL)
330 ml for cans, 500 ml for bottles
@clear ferry Still have some USB to Serial around, but any more modern network kit I've used has a usb port for console access.
@strange vapor does the usb in the device present itself as a serial adapter
Our cans/bottles are typically 330ml/600mL
Cans are like $1.60 and bottles are like $4-4.50 lol
@hushed basalt Yup, usually something along the lines of /dev/ttyUSBX
@hushed basalt Some of them present as a net adapter as well. Easier to transfer firmware over scp :)
@scenic radish my father the cocacolic loves going to the us, for those ridiculous large bottles of coke
A 0.5l bottle here is $2.60 I think
oh the 2 liters? lol
No, the 0.6+ ones, I think I saw 0.68 in new Jersey
ah gotcha. yeah 0.6L is common
Gotta pay for that refrigeration β
Yeah where the thermostat is set to like 12 degrees
Why would you waste empty calories on soft drinks (not pop @scenic radish, you must be from the Windy City) when you can drink πΊ
Good point, there's always diet pop I suppose π
And yeah, just outside Chicago city limits actually
Sounds cold
how 'bout dem blackhawks? π
Still mad about Coach Q getting fired
last year?
Yup lol
No one but Chicago residents calls it pop π€£
its a north US thing mostly
I have family in Chicago. Love downtown Chicago. Pop hurts my brain
always been soda to me
I guess I am from the south. Not really but thatβs where I went to HS. We always called it by its name. Coke, sprite, Pepsi.
Well we do that too, pop is just the general term
yeah, south tends to say "Coke" for everything for some reason
I think it is the Midwest twang in pop that always made the hair on the back of my neck stand up
i'm a MIL brat so its "soda"
I was gonna say...general term....you mean coke?
I've always found that interesting
The next upgrade of HAss needs to figure out a way we can all trade places for a day. I have seen many parts of the world.....still on my bucket list though is Australia, Italy, France, Germany......probably others.
Straya is overrated

Neolibs can be progressive too
should go to kiwi land instead?
Point me at a progressive neolib
genuinely curious how that works
oh I missed your next line lol
got me
Well... now we know what our privacy is worth
So Tesla unveiled just about the ugliest truck I've ever seen lmao
Lol
Simones Truckla looks way better.
I'm thinking of setting it to arm/disarm automatically depending on the status of our phones
Convenient, as long as you don't also have a smart lock linked to that phone
Otherwise having your phone == full access to the house
Nah :D
Although for 99.999% of people their keys also mean full access to their house
And they can get taken just as easily as phones
If not more easily
I'll probably set up an NFC reader for my front door when I have a house,
But most day to day ingress/egress would be through the garage
The way I think I'd have it.
- open the interior garage door, the lights turn on
- interior door swings close automatically, electronic strike locks on close
- press a button by the door, opens the garage door
- hop in car, drive through the open garage door
- safety beam sensors on garage door get broken, door is programmed to close 5 seconds after being clear
- drive away, door shuts automatically
- phone disappears on unifi AP, alarm armed
And basically the same in reverse
Open garage door with standard GDO in car, drive in, door closes automatically, HA detects Bluetooth of car, unlocks interior door
Lots of steps where the logic might fail if there's something different you need to do
How so
Well the most obvious issues would be phone running out of battery or car BT not connecting etc. But also something stuff like someone walking out of the garage causing the door to automatically close etc
Phone runs out of battery, the google TTS would tell me the alarm is being armed status pending
And I could disarm it with a tablet or computer
If the bluetooth doesn't pickup I just have to unlock the interior door another way
Walking out without keys and getting locked out is something that can happen to anyone, anywhere.
My HA stuff is pretty limited, but in general the biggest issues I've had, have been stuff turning off at wrong times so I usually try to avoid any needlessly complicated automations that turn off stuff
if a light turns on when you don't need it, is not a huge issue, but it turning off can be π
It's really just 4 or 5 very simple separate automations
But by their powers combined, they become CAPTAIN PLANET
And to be honest the only critical one is the garage door closing automatically
And that's handled internally by the garage door opener itself. Plus i have sensors to alert me it's left open for too long
personally, i don't want anything related to my doors locking/unlocking or garage opening/closing (IF I HAD ONE) to be automated, i want manual control for those things
The chance of HA falsely reporting closed is much lower than the chance of me driving away and leaving it open
but you do you, boo π
The opening is manual
And the automatic unlocking is an interior door so lower risk
ah gotcha. you said
And basically the same in reverse
Same and I'd also keep them offline too, but I know a lot of people like the idea at least
But then I followed up
but i do like your idea
Open garage door with standard GDO in car, drive in, door closes automatically, HA detects Bluetooth of car, unlocks interior door
M for message
Sorry can't hear you
FOREVER
Too busy not reading your message
lol
is it easy to mimic a BT device btw?
oh yeah mac spoofing is a thing
but that requires someone to know the mac, and that you have a bluetooth automation to begin with
I'd say risk matrix is acceptable
yeah, tbh probably negligible risk of that
true
Targeted sophisticated attacks just don't happen domestically

I think my HA setup is 1000 times safer than some ADT panel with the default master code

New Android phones allow you to disable lock screen when the phone is in local wifi, right?
I just want a simple way to monitor the logic levels on the zones and put that into a RPi
Yeah it's a feature
It's dumb
actually not with wi-fi networks, at least not anymore
trusted places (location), trusted devices (bluetooth)
alright, I guess that's a lot safer
I used to have Tasker doing that for me, but it required root
on-body detection, which always seemed... not the safest to me lol
but it requires an unlock first
and when you set it down, it locks again
I've disabled all those features
same
my fiancee just got a pixel 3a XL and i'm still on my OG pixel XL π’
i'm jealous lol
Switch them, she will probably not notice
i actually thought of doing that lol
she'd def notice though
"i thought my phone was plastic... and why are my screen corners not rounded anymore?"
"uh... software update."
should probably get off the OG pixel as its going out of support this year
i know... last major software update already, and last patch in december...
but i like it π
just got a text from my wife that said "if you buy me anything for christmas i want it to be a robot vacuum" π
lol
so now the question is, what kind of robot vacuums are available that are reasonable controllable and cheap
and work decently on hardwood because literally only 1 room of our house has carpet π€£
Roborock. End of discussion.
80% of my condo is carpet
not relevant to your problem though, i just need attention
We have carpet in the bedrooms, because it's nice underfoot in cold mornings, and on the stairs, because the wife prefers it there
Otherwise, solid flooring everywhere
bylaws require me to have carpet everywhere except the kitchen, bathrooms, and laundry room due to noise concerns
it's a requirement above the first floor in my condo complex
That's reasonable
yeah. i don't mind it actually. i like carpet
Our old apartment was the same way
look at mr. moneybags over here with his heated floors π
Bests is valid too
it is indeed
True
my internal parser showed no errors
Mine showed a warning
better than an error
English is a handy language, in that you can abuse it horribly, and it still makes sense
lol
This also makes learning it a PITA
Sandra and Woo is a comedy webcomic about love, food and other important stuff; featuring the girl Sandra and her pet raccoon Woo.
Last time i saw carpeted floors in Norway was my grandmother's house in 1993 I think
But it was built in 1952
So does roborock just meet the requested requirements from cgarwood or is it all around the best? I am also looking. We have a mix of carpet and hardwood and lots of obstacles.
Everyone would just recommend the Roborock. Paying more than 500 is just ridiculous and expecting anything 'good' under 300 is... dangerous. So an old S50 for just above 300 or even better the newer S6 is a pretty solid choice
There is also a well known custom firmware if it's about the china thingy.. I run it myself too
German production cough
Got this little dude in the package with my hacktoberfest t-shirt
I find it funny for some reason
I'm still waiting for my shirt
bummer
@green inlet it's just the best
@clear ferry move to freedomland and you'll get it faster π

going to the gun range after work and getting taco bell after that
maybe i really am a stereotypical american
although i'm going to the gym after that. not sure where that falls with the stereotypical american
A muricaner
Indoor range?
yeah
I haven't been in a long while. I should do that soon
so fun
i go about once a month, although it's been a few months since i went last
do you own any guns or just rent each time?
it's probably been 2 years since the last time I shot a gun
I own 3. 2 handguns and a shotgun
ah nice. i have a smith and wesson M&P 2.0 and a shield M2.0. both 9mm
Nice, my hi-point is 9mm, but it's a POS. My Colt 1911 is my main at the range
It's illegal to buy in California nowadays. I got it like a year before they changed the law
interesting
i think illinois was the last state to allow concealed carry
and i'm in cook county which has strict laws already
i think open carry is excessive
concealed carry i could understand. but yeah, there are very strict criteria that need to be met for you to use your weapon legally
Even if it is "legal" you'll still likely be financially ruined from the court and lawyer fees
yup. that's why there's self-defense insurance
All the Europeans are nervous because the Muricans are talking about guns π
lmao
ah nice, i have a broadlink

!?!?
is this a LPT or a meme?
https://user-images.githubusercontent.com/19333006/40923782-ffa98f82-6815-11e8-80e2-98856bdccf39.jpg
really?
Yes if going outdoors
Appears they have gotten more flexible on it
Now it is only recommended
I see different messages though
`You must carry a gun outside the settlements. In a 2012 law the Governor of Svalbard requires anyone travelling outside the settlements to have the means to scare off a polar bear. This means carrying a firearm is mandatory, and items like flare guns are also highly recommended.
It is prohibited to use a weapon within the settlements though. Several of the shops, restaurants and other public buildings have βno firearms permitted' signs on the main doors.`
@fallow galleon using twist ties as jumper wires?
I'd say that's a LPT. They work in a pinch
I've done it
but jumper wire kits are dirt cheap, so it's only necessary if you have limited options
yea. I'm just surprised to see that on an "official" guide
@clear ferry brb, moving to svalbard
jk but really, interesting. how is that enforced?
It's not going to hurt anything. Pretty much anything metal will work. All you need is conductivity. You could also use a paper clip
Or a staple
or a correct horse battery staple: https://xkcd.com/936/
The benefit of twist ties is they are insulated
I imagine the sleeve also make sure of the connectivity
@scenic radish well, if you don't do it you get eaten by a polar bear
ah
And they go, we told you so
that would be worse than being eaten by the bear
Also, you aren't allowed to die or be born on Svalbard
that doesn't sound right, but i don't know enough about svalbard to dispute it
@scenic radish good call on that Fossil watch. I think I'm gonna get one
π
for sure! i'd read this beforehand though... https://www.reddit.com/r/pebble/comments/dz5qa4/spoiler_alert_the_fossil_hybrid_hr_is_not_a/
I was recently intrigued by the e-ink display and battery life on the new Fossil Hybrid HR and my second Pebble 2 HR has seen better days (but I...
@clever mortar you were right... notifications only from 13 select apps...
Tinkerer is away for 6m 11s with a message :point_right: There isn't a way things should be. There's just what happens, and what we do.
thankfully those issues can be fixed with a software upd8
Yeah none of those are deal-breaking for me. Gmail uses HTML5 notification, I wonder if anything using HTML5 would work
and fossil has a good return policy if you don't like it
they include a pre-paid return label in the box
As long as I get text/call notifications that's all I really care about
I want to see if it's worth pulling out my phone when it goes off
assuming your texting app is supported...
i'm not sure how ominous this really is though
notifications per app is just.... strange. Why would they not tie directly into Android notifications?
exactly, who knows
might not have access?
i'm under the impression that pebble (and other smartwatches) just intercept the text from notifications and format it for the watch
notification access is a permission on android
right, but google has been locking that one down quite a bit lately
It shouldn't be a permission issue.
So I've been wondering... what would be the easiest way to get a particular sports teams score into HA as sensor?
That's.... annoying about the Fossil, but, I'll wait and see how it goes
I don't mind the lack of apps though, I barely use anything other than weather and media controls
same, don't care about the apps at all
notifications are the deal breaker for me if they don't make it more general
like... if i can't see telegram and abode notifications then no go
Telegram, WhatsApp, Hangouts, Calendar, GMail... and a bunch of travel related apps
insert airline here
insert 99% of the apps i use here
what about my reddit notifications?! π
and discord!!

Reddit Is Fun
Has anyone had much success using a surface pro 3 as a tablet interface.. any good software for wake on motion for front camera? or other good stuff. All i got now is chrome browser in fullscren
That role no longer exists.
@white radish you could put ubuntu on it
It might make it easier to automate some stuff
In theory
hmm i saw someone else on reddit did that. but not sure how i coudl take advantage
Thereβs iotlink for Windows devices. Works pretty well @white radish https://gitlab.com/iotlink/iotlink
i see i have options to turn the screen on and off. that seems like what i want. not just to see if can get the front camera involved to trigger it
My router does not appear to like when I try to set a static IP address on my laptop with Debian server. I had to let it assign my laptop the bullshit IP address that I don't want and do a DHCP reservation
Debian is crap with dhcp for some reason
But if I try to set a static IP on the laptop, my router at some point stops seeing my laptop on the network even though I can Home Assistant in my browser using the static IP
And can ping the router from the laptop
I'm sure some "enthusiastic" person on the linuc discord will have a reason why it's superior
Even though have my dns namespace stuff doesn't work on ubuntu, and works on everything else
So i have to use workarounds that make everything less good
Any clue why that might be happening? It honestly seems like my router
What is the problem
My guess it's the assigned gateway in the dhcp lease
When you say your router stops seeing it on the network
What exactly do you mean
I go to the page where I can see all connected devices and it doesn't appear anymore
But accessing at the static IP I assign on the laptop works
Connected devices usually only shows devices assigned by dhcp
Except my port forwarding rule stops working so bye bye remote access
Can you just use dhcp with static lease anyways
I go to port forwarding rules and I see the rule but with "unavailable" next to the device name
What router are you using
Google WiFi lol
Never had this issue before
I moved my home assistant setup from my pi to an old laptop
Can you assign your port forward by strictly typing in an ip
Rather than selecting a device
I just want it to be 192.168.87.2 but I have to let my router assign 192.168.87.40 π’
For some stupid reason, no
It's probably some google thing
"devices" would only be devices allocated a dhcp lease too
.40 is the start of the DHCP pool
I've tried but for some reason after restarting networking, bringing enp5s0 back up, and even rebooting the host it never picks up the new IP
It stays on .40 or it gets FUBAR again
I've power cycled my router like 10 fucking times in the last 2 hours too lol
π€·
All good
This is why I use open source routers :D
GoOglE knOws BeSt
I'm wondering if I'm just fucking up my /etc/network/interfaces file or something
But I'm following the official Debian guide on setting a static IP
But then no mesh
It can't be in bridge mode
Which is what I'm assuming you're saying by using it as an access point only
Yep, it's all happy now that I let it assign an IP. Who fucking knows lol
Thanks for listening to my rant
All good
@hushed basalt Debian is crap with dhcp? I've been running Debian for 15+ years, and running DHCP reservations, never had issues

I love the sesame Street food truck show
Greetings.
Felicitations.

So your almighty DHCP reservations are doing nothing right now atx
I can't assign my laptop the IP I want with DHCP and it's not taken by another device
Shitty DHCP servers won't help π€·
