But yeah when my starter was going, hitting it with a wrench would temporarily make it work. It didn't make a clicking sound though. In fact it made no noise at all

#

Hi. I need some advice=)
I want to replace my regular thermostat (just a cheap one that has a schedule with temperatures).
And I want to have a separate heat controller in each room.
And of course I want to connect it to my HA.
And I can't decide. There are to many options out there.
Option 1) Take any zwave thermostat. And controllers like the one from Fibaro. And connect all of this to HA.
Option 2) Instead of a thermostat to use some other actor connected on the 2 wires from the heater.
Option 3) A full system like the Honeywell evohome and connect HA to it's cloud (I've seen there is a component already)

Option 1 and 2 will probably be cheaper (but must not). But I will have to deal a lot with implementing it.

Has anybody already did something like this and can share the experience? Thx in advance.

#

There is option 4 (to build the controllers with Wemos d1 mini or NodeMCU). This would save money, but I don't have enough free time to go this way=)

slow acorn
#

@hushed basalt @sacred carbon fun fact, Twilio doesn't support receiving SMS short code messages. I tried this first, but got nowhere, thus the solution I have now.

sacred carbon
#

I call it directly through node-red. direct api call

#

Add the node-red-node-twilio to node-red

#

done. (tm)(copyright)(1987)

slow acorn
#

yeah, but for package notifications, it doesn't work. 😛

sacred carbon
#

It should, just build out the logic from your sensor.

slow acorn
#

lol

sacred carbon
#

er. trigger whatever you are using.

slow acorn
#

let me explain real fast

#

SMS messages from USPS come from 28777 This is an SMS Short Code, and while they work going to a proper SIM card, they don't work going to Twilio. https://support.twilio.com/hc/en-us/articles/223181668-Can-Twilio-numbers-receive-SMS-from-a-short-code-

sacred carbon
#

you capture that sms coming in now right?

#

in to HA?

#

(at least I think I saw you did)

slow acorn
sacred carbon
#

have HA take that. (sensor, trigger) pass it off to node-red to twilio

slow acorn
#

a Mobile Broadband datastick (USB Modem)

#

I'm passing it from the raw data on the stick to AWS Lambda via POSTing to an AWS API Gateway endpoint. Sensor data persistence is handled via a DynamoDB table. A Custom package component queries the API Gateway via a GET endpoint. This calls another lambda that returns the non-delivered packages and count in an HA state object that can be inserted into the Sensor's state 😄

ruby finch
#

Oh hey @clever mortar It might actually have been your blog that gave me that idea 🙃

slow acorn
#

So it looks and feels like calling a real remote API, just that you control the data end to end.

sacred carbon
#

if you are doing all that api call stuff, you can can do it real easy in node-red.

slow acorn
#

It also certainly beats the email script that everyone and their brother has tweaked to hell and back which will break once the HTML markup changes in those emails

sacred carbon
#

or create an endpoint in node-red that receives that api data, and update ha with it...

slow acorn
#

I mean, I could. Or I can just use my AWS free tier for all these services and never cost a dime

#

well, outside the cost of the cellular SMS

sacred carbon
#

you can run a node-red instance in AWS.

#

make your own api layer.

slow acorn
#

sure. EC2, yeah?

#

That will cost me money. I already have multiple EC2 instances lol

sacred carbon
#

I sumbled upon node-red and omg man, powerful powerful stuff esp when you want to interact with outside service/api's

#

run it on another pi then lol

#

it runs on a shoe string

slow acorn
#

API Gateway's free tier more than covers the request counts on a month. lambda requires a VERY long runtime, a lot of RAM, or a ton of calls, to make it cost anything more than $0.01

sacred carbon
#

so how you getting it off the stick currently? just a shell script?

slow acorn
#

and you get 5 reads and 5 writes a second on a dynamodb table for free

sacred carbon
#

probably can hook up the dynamodb up to the node-red as well.

slow acorn
#

yeah, atm it's a script. This modem's AT command support is... lacking.

#

but, if you find a modem that does support AT antics via USB Serial.... gammu-smsd's RunOnReceive is the way to go

sacred carbon
#

so easy way, create a http listener in node red, have that script just call that listener, kick off the work flow in node-red

slow acorn
#

To be fair... I work for AWS lol so obviously I'm going to use that

#

All the code for this will be on GitHub, so anyone is free to fork, PR, etc

sacred carbon
#

leverage that power g

#

problem with aws it doesn't natively chat with other services. give node red a glance. I think you would enjoy it.

slow acorn
#

but I don't NEED it to chat with other services

sacred carbon
#

for this little application, it would be perfect.
script -> node-red's flow which can trigger lots of stuff.

and by chat, I mean use others api's

slow acorn
#
    def _update(self):
        data = '{"carrier": "%s"}' %(self._carrier)

        response = requests.get('removed', data=data)

        self._state = json["data"]["state"]
        self._attributes = {ATTR_ATTRIBUTION: "Information provided by a cellular modem and AWS magic"}
        self._attributes.update(json["data"]["attributes"])

        return```
#

HA can just call my API Gateway

#

which will provide state lol

#

oh... node red is like... visual drag and drop code blocks lol

#

yeah, I'll stick to having complete control over the code I run lol

sacred carbon
#

you can get nutty with coding in node-red, it just takes care of that middle layer that no one wants to code up... but each to their own. I get it.

slow acorn
#

Amazon says I am a "Software Development Engineer"... The subsidiary I work for calls me an "SRE". I like writing my own code and having operational control over it 😄

sacred carbon
#

heeh but even software engineers use sdk's

slow acorn
#

sure. I used boto3 here lol

sacred carbon

you just want to know all the code that is running, I get that.

slow acorn

I just didn't mind connecting all the things. It's already done minus some regex for the two carriers I haven't had a shipment from since I started this.

#

switching providers is also a TON more work when it's not needed

#

but the general idea is, the code will be Apache 2.0 licensed (matching HA's licensing) so everyone will be free to do with it what they want

#

Plus, someone, somewhere will tell me how shit my code is for x, y, or z reason. Which, they are free to fix it if they are so inclined.

clear ferry

clear ferry
#

We are talking about being able to pause and start video from any part of the house and resume it wherever you go, and speakers behind walls that are fine tuned to play through the wall drapings

#

This is mostly crestron and a few other controller brands

static plinth
#

Yeah that sounds like control for to me and it's still out there. but it's like the difference between a gas and electric vehicle. the electric stuff is costly because it's new the gas stuff is costly because there's a shitload of things that need to be interconnected together for it to work.

#

*Control4

And everything was passing through crestron devices as far as I could see

static plinth
#

Sounds about twice as large, so at least four times as complicated as what I'm trying to do with knock-off brands and what not today. But for example of a 4K Matrix audio visual distribution system I would think today would cost $35,000 in hardware components to do what you're saying, before whatever is required to patch everything together

Smart TVs make alot of that stuff obsolete

But there are still nuances. Sonos doesn't support the best sound formats. Cable TV is specifically unfriendly. Unifi protect lacks an API. Abode will directly register smoke detectors but not pass through to HA.

@strange vapor I was mindficked the year I rented a car in the Republic and drove to Northern, and the rental only had kmh, and northern only has miles ThinkEyes

scenic radish
#

@strange vapor interesting, i had no idea

#

but i'm also from the US 😛

strange vapor
#

I remember when they changed the speed signed from imperial to metric here. It was done over the course of month, and it was a mindfuck.

scenic radish
#

goodness...

#

i can't even imagine

strange vapor
#

Especially if driving through a town and you had someone sticking to 30kph just in case

#

(30mph areas went to 50kph)

#

@scenic radish If you want a real good example of a traffic changeover: http://realscandinavia.com/this-day-in-history-swedish-traffic-switches-sides-september-3-1967/

You've heard of D-Day, but have you ever heard of Dagen H (Swedish for H Day)? H stands for Högertrafikomläggningen, or the Right-Hand Traffic Diversion. On Sunday, September 3, 1967, Sweden changed from driving on the left-hand side of the road to driving on the right. As ...

scenic radish
#

pulled over
"do you know how fast you were going?"
"I KNOW NOTHING"

clear mirage
#

"I know Nothing!! Nothing! I wasn't even driving!

#

a couple years ago i was going over to canada and when i crossed the border i just went int my setting and switched from imperial to metric.

scenic radish
#

i have analog gauges so i'd have to squint at the tiny km/h numbers

clear ferry
#

@strange vapor you will never best the Swedes anyway

#

They drove in the left with right hand drive cars for years

#

Then just switched at 1200 on a Monday

scenic radish
#

@strange vapor i can't even imagine switching from imperial to metric, much less switching sides of the damn road

clear ferry
#

Noob @scenic radish

#

My wife freaks out wherever we do a rental in the UK

scenic radish
#

I didn't make this choice.

clear ferry
#

But I love it 😛

scenic radish
#

Metric makes way more sense, I'd rather use that

clear ferry
#

Remember to vote metric at the next general election @scenic radish

strange vapor
#

@scenic radish I regularly switch the side of the road I drive on when I head to the US or EU Continent.

scenic radish
#

at this point i don't even know how i'd learn metric. all i know is that 1 ounce is about 30 mL

#

0 C is freezing, 10 is cool, 20 is warm, 30 is hot

clear ferry
scenic radish
#

i am aware

clear ferry
#

😂

#

I love that chart

scenic radish
#

tbh i really don't think M/D/Y is that bad

#

but imperial is ridiculous

strange vapor
#

As soon as you have to deal with Time and Date progmatically, the M/D/Y thing is a pain.

scenic radish
#

well yeah

#

some software i use at work expresses months as 201911 which is brilliant because as a number you can directly compare months as greater than or less than

#

same with 20191111

clear ferry
#

Yeah, we do that for firmware

#

It makes a lot of sense

strange vapor
#

At work we force ISO 8601 for every date.

scenic radish
#

although in SQL i still have to use BETWEEN with the date strings

#

because the tables don't have an ISO 8601 date field

#

not exactly a big deal but still

clear mirage
#

at work when we get prints in metric, i jsut divide by 25.4

strange vapor
#

@scenic radish We generally use ISO 8601 for input, but store as a UTC timestamp.

scenic radish
#

ah i suppose that makes sense

#

also all this typing in yaml makes me want to use the same spacing in SSMS lol

clear mirage
#

the best part is when we get prints in that are in spanish or german.

strange vapor
#

Easier as well to convert for clients, especially when we have clients spotted all over the globe.

scenic radish
#

oh UTC time you mean?

#

yeah just add/subtract the modifier (or whatever it's called) for your region

clear ferry
#

United States time coordinated

scenic radish

lol

clear ferry

Nice, it is going to rain tomorrow

#

That can get interesting LennyThink

@light trout let's go to the us

I think I just had a lucky escape with parking. Was in a rush this morning and forgot to pay on my phone while running to the train. Parking was tight enough that I was within inches of the cars either side.

#

Realised when getting on the train home I'd forgotten 😦

#

Got to the station, and it looks very much like the guy clamping went for easier targets as he was at the more open side of the station unclamping people 🙂

scenic radish
#

damn, they put a boot on your car if you don't pay for parking? we just get a ticket

strange vapor
#

Yup!

scenic radish
#

so they force you to park there illegally even longer? that makes sense lol

clever mortar
#

Here at the train station you get a please don't do that sticker at most

#

Mind you, we also don't pay 😛

scenic radish
#

slap on the wrist

#

so your station makes DHCP reservations

strange vapor
#

The company running the parking are a shower of arreholes who do everything they can to punish you if you screw up once. They force you to install an app to pay, but won't do nice things like send a notification if your parking is running out..

clever mortar
#

The concept of having to pay for parking at the train station... wouldn't survive up here 😄

scenic radish
#

@strange vapor's assigns static IPs

strange vapor
#

@clever mortar Unfortunately survives very well here, and you can guess how much of the parking fee goes into upgrading facilities :/

clever mortar
#

Yeah

#

I've a colleague who pays more for parking than I do for my train journey

#

That's... just broken

strange vapor
#

It's not quite that bad here.

#

Stations along the commuter lines are beginning to fill up fast in the morning though, which is causing knock on problem with people abandoning cars in surrounding housing estates.

#

Too expensive to live in Dublin, so the commuter towns are filling up!

clever mortar
#

Yeah, I used to live somewhere like that - if you weren't at the station by 06:30... you're not getting parked, so all the surrounding streets end up residents only (and costing the residents)

strange vapor
#

Next village over they instituted max 2 hour parking outside the train station. Took bringing in tow trucks to removing cars a couple of days before people copped on that they were serious.

#

Now there's a cottage industry with people who have a spare driveway space during the day 😄

clever mortar
#

Everybody wins 👍

strange vapor
#

To be fair, it was needed. Local businesses were screwed as no one could park there during the day.

https://community.home-assistant.io/t/twilio-str-object-has-no-attribute-body-error-message/141190 So I was searching and found someone with this same issue. I know how to "make it not throw the error" but im not confident that's the right choice (maybe twilio is sending bad webhook data?) and wanted to make some kind of "Comment" on the code in github https://github.com/home-assistant/home-assistant/blob/dev/homeassistant/components/cloud/utils.py but I have no idea how to even do that. Anyone want to hand hold me through best practices of github?

@strange vapor is PHP really that bad

A few people I know rave about laravel but who knows

All I know is Python :(

clear ferry

I dabbled in php

strange vapor

@hushed basalt It's a lot better these days, but I worked in shared hosting at the height of PHP4 and PHP5 which has forever tainted PHP in my view. Two words to strike fear: Register Globals

The biggest problem with shared hosting is that universal rule: The less someone pays for something the more they expect.

True, you can validate that statement with this discord server and our forum...

obtuse topaz

It's very hard to get parrot integration going, since there are so many parrot models each supporting different features and endpoints

Better to just use a nodemcu to simulate hardware control on the parrot, quite janky but should work

@hushed basalt my favorite one here is seeing the person send another message saying "anyone?????" five minutes after sending their original message

as though everyone who can answer the question is pinged and compelled to open discord and answer

@clear ferry very nice, but why is it off-center? 🤔

@scenic radish because the original one is like that too
