Thus don’t use docker as it will be a black box for you till you understand how it all works

sand mesa
#

No I understand. Using doctor is not running setup.exe lol.

#

I understand docker basics, building a container by composing it. GitHub repos, Port forwarding, etc. but yeah I’m also no expert. So I will probably start with hass.io. I have a 3b+ and 2GB Pi 4. So I guess I’ll do 3B+ now and use the 4 to play other ways like you describe.

all your posted playlists almost make me want to get a spotify account. almost

clear ferry
#

People don't have Spotify?

#

😛

#

It is the only proper streaming service imo, tried Google music but it was shite, and I steer clear of Crapple

wet pilot
#

i prefer radio style to be honest

#

never had a desire to build playlists

clear ferry
#

And I used subsonic since 2004 until I got Spotify, but still use subsonic for my obscure prog rock

#

But... Spotify is radio style, when you are done with an album it will play similar artists in a radio format

#

I have a single playlist I use to just store new stuff in so I remember to check out the artist later

wet pilot
#

i find that the AI definitions of "similar" tend to stray too far away from the source

clear ferry
#

The wife has issues with that as well, but I think it is because she doesn't vary her taste enough

#

My daily mixes are usually always something new and interesting

orchid rose
#

if only di.fm still allowed direct links 😢

#

RIP my HA radio interface where I could select the di.fm channel and automate stuff. I just don't listen enough to justify paying their monthly fee which I think still gives the direct links...

wet pilot
#

i actually got it working as a POC

#

i do have the paid account though

#

you download the p3c or whatever it is and open it in a text editor. It'll give you the link you need

orchid rose
#

afaik with paid account it still works the same way as it used to with the free one as well

#

but for the free one you need to use the site or the app unfortunately

clear ferry
#

Long live Spotify

#

Also a five account family setup costs the same as a single account almost

wet pilot
#

ah, they locked out the "local player" access

orchid rose
#

yeah 😦

#

I have Spotify so I can tell my google home to play some stuff from time to time but without paying that doesn't work very well either (can't properly choose songs or artists)

clear ferry
#

I gladly pay that monthly fee for a service that works, only thing I pay for is Spotify and Netflix really

#

And Nabu Casa 😛

orchid rose
#

I'll gladly pay if I find it useful but I just don't use these services enough

wet pilot
#

di/rockradio are my typical work soundtracks and not hearing the ads helps

#

the monthly sub is a bit pricey, but then it comes with those two plus more

clear ferry
#

I probably listen to 12-15 hours of Spotify weekly on average, weeks with a lot of office time it is closer to 50 hours I would say

orchid rose
#

for me it's like 30 minutes or so a week on average so you can see why I don't find the same value in it 😉

#

I used di.fm for almost 20 years, but without the "local player" access that died out as well

clear ferry
#

What do you do? Have a social life and actually talk to your colleges? ThonkEyes

orchid rose
#

that plus my own collection of music. And podcasts for actual listening.

clear ferry
#

Lots of podcasts in Spotify too, I only listen to three there though

#

Reminds me, I should try to pull in the other podcasts I listen to in subsonic

scenic radish
#

i like google music because it comes with youtube premium (no ads on youtube videos)

#

wait i have that backward. my youtube premium subscription includes google play music all access

#

and i'm grandfathered in at $10/month instead of $12

clear ferry
#

YouTube premium is overpriced imo

#

Compared to what you get

#

I considered it for the baby to have offline videos in the car

light trout
#

By itself I agree, but you get google music as well
or at least you used to get that

clear ferry
#

Is there anything in Google music that isn't on Spotify? 🤷

light trout
#

I doubt it

scenic radish
#

it comes with youtube music and google play music

clear ferry
#

At one point there were five or six music streaming services in Norway and they all were fragmented

light trout
#

But lets say you don't have spotify, then it's not that bad

scenic radish
#

depending on country

#

yeah, if you already have another streaming service it doesn't make sense to get youtube premium, but i got it because i didn't have a streaming service

clear ferry
#

But YouTube premium doesn't have a five members account like Spotify has maybe?

#

Didn't see it when I checked prices last

light trout
#

3 I think, + 29NOK ea over that, or something

clear ferry
#

Yeah, to move my account to a family account and include the wife and a seperate account for guests only cost me a single Spotify account price, plus 10NOK or whatever, and I can still give my daughter an account without paying anything extra, and I could cancel the wife's subscription 🤷

bronze rock
#

Is there a way to find out where I've defined a specific bash alias? I made one, but I cannot find it to modify it, 🙁 Where are the common areas other than ~/.bashrc (running Raspbian Buster)

#

@clear ferry I love Youtube premium because it helps me keep offline music on my device for when I travel, which is nice 🙂 And no ads for kids (or anyone) on Youtube, so I worry less about showing the little ones educational vids since they won't randomly have some ED video in there or something else ridiculous.

#

$12 is a bit steep, I admit, but, so far I'm loving it

clear ferry
#

@bronze rock offline Ive had with Spotify for 10 years already, but I hardly ever use it since I have free data 🤷

bronze rock
#

I was previously paying $6/mo for Pandora, but I couldn't choose what I wanted...

Gotcha. I simply don't have data access sometimes when travelling so its nice to still be able to listen to music in those environs.

scenic radish
#

we're not telling you spotify is bad atx...lol

clear ferry
#

Pandora, I don't think we ever had that over here

scenic radish
#

just that it's nice that youtube premium also has google music included

clear ferry
#

I see it mentioned in a lot of American car forums

wet pilot
#

pandora is fine

scenic radish
#

can anyone actually tell the difference between 320 kbps and lossless?

clear ferry

#

I can't

#

But if I can listen to it on a dirty turntable instead of MP3 I do that

#

Because then I have to lift my fat ass to change sides 😛

scenic radish
#

lmao

bronze rock
#

I like pandora, for finding music, but while they seemed to pioneer a lot of the discovery tech, it seems Google has caught up a ton. It's exceedingly good at choosing playlists for me based off of songs that match exactly what I want to hear

scenic radish
bronze rock
#

ehhh, I can tell the difference between 128kbps and 192kbps mp3s, at least, encoded 10+yrs ago, I dunno if they've changed the algorithms to be better by now or not

#

greatly depends on what you're using to listen to it as well

#

I keep picking the 320kbps mp3 on that test lol

#

FYI looking at the waveforms themselves between WAV and 320mbps mp3 there is VERY little difference that you can even see, so it makes sense that it's difficult to hear the differences (imo)

scenic radish
#

i can't tell unless there are cymbals or something else with very high frequencies

#

i can immediately tell with anything below 128 though

#

it shocks me that some people can't even do that

#

Love this track

clear ferry
#

Only thing I watch on YouTube is kids shows anyway 😂

#

And then I only have to watch a single ad

#

Once per day

scenic radish
#

ah so the entire thing is a waste of time then 😉

For those who want to fix their MyQ Cover and don't want to wait for the next update to fix it. The updates been made on github. You can just download the HA repo as a zip folder (https://github.com/home-assistant/home-assistant), then extract homeassistant/components/myq from it. Once you've done that, in custom components on your HA system make a myq directory and add all the contents of your extracted folder into it. Then restart and it should work. I had to rename the cover entity as it created it with a name of "cover_2". Just keep in mind you'll probably want to pull the custom component out once the next update releases with this fix.

Only a 3+2 seater in the main living room

scenic radish
#

@clear mirage thanks. yeah, bit of a bummer, but i use a different TV in a different for gaming which is most of my media consumption

wet pilot
#

my living room is pretty lousy for setup too

clear ferry
#

My house is lousy

scenic radish
#

the only air return for the entire condo is also in that room and it's a little noisy because it's right by the blower motor...so i have an automation that turns the volume up on the TV when it turns on and turns it back down when it turns off lol

wet pilot
#

lol

clear ferry
#

The living room is like 16 meters long and 4 meters wide

wet pilot
#

one of the 3 returns is in the living room. Decently far from the blower though

clear ferry
#

My useless living room

scenic radish
#

legit less than 1 foot (.3 m) of ductwork between the grille and the blower

clear ferry
scenic radish
#

that's an odd size for sure

light trout
#

How many times have you bumped your head in that speaker?

clear ferry
#

Never

#

I'm not 2 meters 😛

#

Or wait

#

I'm two meters wide

scenic radish
#

tall man

#

oh wait

#

wide man

clear ferry
#

Oooof that couch

#

I want it

scenic radish
#

if it makes you feel better @clear ferry, my living room is 15' x 13' (4.5 m x 4 m)

#

so at least yours is much bigger

#

😉

clear mirage
#

@scenic radish your welcome. my setup is that i have to have the tv in the corner and i have sliding patio doors to one side

clear ferry
#

My house is stupid overall 😛

scenic radish
#

@clear mirage ah i've gotcha. i'm glad the door to my balcony is on the side and is a regular slab door. i hate sliding doors

unreal orbit
#

I'm a big fan of the Milwaukee M12 line. My tools are either those or Makita 18V

wet pilot
#

i ended up going dewalt

scenic radish
#

yeah they're great. feels weird having contractor-grade tools when i'm just a homeowner but oh well lol

#

that's also why i went 12 volt and not 18

clear ferry
#

I have Bosch at home, but I've used a lot of Makita at work, love em

wet pilot
#

mmm Bosch

unreal orbit
#

Realistically brand doesn't really matter for home stuff. We're not using them enough to really see the drawbacks

scenic radish
#

true. i just wanted to not have to replace them for a long time

clear mirage
wet pilot
#

that was my thought too

unreal orbit
#

Are they Fuel?

scenic radish
#

is that the gen 2?

#

if so i don't think so

unreal orbit
#

It's the brushless versions of their tools

clear ferry
#

That chair 🤢

scenic radish
#

i got the set about a year ago, just haven't used the impact since i got them

unreal orbit
#

I was a bit worried about 12V not being enough power for certain jobs, but even drilling out concrete to put an anchor in ended up being a non-issue for the M12 hammer drill

clear mirage
#

@scenic radish the tv is in the one corner. the previous owners left a a swivel wall mount, just havent got around to mounting it

clear ferry
#

My Bosch takes both 14.4 and 18v

clear mirage
#

@clear ferry it was a freebie when i got the couch, lamps, and end tables

scenic radish
#

@unreal orbit that's good to hear. using the impact was probably overkill for driving 1.5" screws, but i didn't want to switch bits on the drill constantly. scared the piss out of me using it for the first time because it was like SCREW FASTENED BITCH in the blink of an eye lol
@clear mirage ooh that's nice. the previous owners of my place just left a bunch of code violations and some laxatives

unreal orbit
#

The point where the impact starts impacting is usually pretty shallow, so you can hear when you need to start backing off

clear mirage
scenic radish
#

@unreal orbit let me tell you, those brackets are going nowhere lmao

unreal orbit
#

but sometimes it is a bit scary

#

haha nice

scenic radish
#

yeah i got the hang of it after the first couple tries

clear mirage
#

@scenic radish also left me that desk to. Lol. yea they also left a nest and myq garage door

scenic radish
#

ah, all the goodies

#

they did install nice appliances though. i can't complain about that

clear ferry
#

I thought my office was bad 😛

clear mirage
#

yup thats what got me started down this rabbit hole of DIY smart home

scenic radish
#

you should see my game room

#

small zigbee device boxes everywhere

#

why would i throw them out when they look so nice on the floor and on every other horizontal surface?

clear mirage
#

oh its worse now. in the corner is 3d printer. lol i have the same problem with amazon boxes

I’ve been using a V1 SmartThings hub since the Kickstarter days, but with a couple recent issues and expecting future changes will cause more problems, I’m considering switching

#

I’ve always been intrigued by home assistant so I installed HASS.io in docker on Ubuntu using an old NUC. besides absolutely hating using the terminal in Linux to manage and install applications it went fairly smooth. I even was able to add my Sonos, Tradfri gateway, and google cast devices surprisingly easy.

#

I’m looking forward to using HomeKit with my iOS devices and Apple Watch. But I’m at the point where I want to start setting up “real” home automation devices that are Zwave and zigbee but I’m concerned about the stability of the USB sticks that are typically used

#

I want to ditch my ST hub and pair devices directly to home assistant and use a 2-in-1 USB stick. Is there anything that I need to be aware of as far as zigbee support is concerned? I’ve read a few posts and some feedback is it isn’t completely baked yet

The XY problem is asking about your attempted solution rather than your actual problem. This leads to enormous amounts of wasted time and energy, both on the part of people asking for help, and on the part of those providing help.
The problem occurs when people get stuck on what they believe is the solution and are unable to step back and explain the issue in full.

mental garden
#

Exactly.

#

damn tree huggers!

wet pilot
#

but, those TT6s tend to make more power than the outgoing 8s

mental garden
#

I had a '14 Taurus SHO. It had 365hp and the GTO is 350. The GTO is 10x more fun to drive. You could really feel the turbo lag on the Taurus.

wet pilot
#

modern turbos don't feel that way typically

#

twin turbos definitely don't

mental garden
#

When I floored it, you could feel the turbo kick in at about 55mph.

wet pilot
#

it definitely kicked in way before that point

mental garden
#

I guess I should say there was a noticeable increase. Obviously they are working before that.

#

I did like the awd though.

#

I don't drive the gto in the winter.

#

The main complaint is that car is good at going fast in a straight line, but that's about it.

#

The brakes are way too small also.

wet pilot
#

that's probably fixable though

mental garden
#

yea, it is.

#

That requires a wife that is ok with spending the money on it.

#

I wanted to put a supercharger and upgrade the brakes, but she said no.

#

Apparently having kids means I don't need a stupid fast car.🙄

scenic radish
#

then... just don't ask, do

#

😉

mental garden
#

That's the plan.

#

It's my daily driver right now.

#

Hoping to get stored somewhere else eventually.

#

Then I'll just ship it off and she won't know the difference.

#

😁

#

That's the way my dad usually did things. It's easier to ask for forgiveness rather than permission.😂

scenic radish
#

"well i've already spent $10,000 on these upgrades, so it would be a waste to reverse them"
"you spent $10,000 on that?!"
"...shit"

mental garden
#

She spends ~$2,500 a year on coffee from Caribou Coffee (like Starbucks). At least the shit I spend money doesn't literally get pissed away.

#

🤦

boreal pewter
#

Dudeeeeee u no eat sushi?

sullen basalt
#

You can buy an extremely nice dual-boiler espresso machine and suitable grinder for that price

#

the following year you could buy a coffee roaster to match, and all the beans you want

#

source: did exactly that.

wet pilot
#

but then, effort 😛

unreal orbit
#

Part of what you pay for is not having to deal with making the coffee every day

scenic radish

@mental garden lmao damn... I wish we still had a caribou around me

#

They got rid of all the Chicago and Chicago suburb ones

sullen basalt
#

fun fact: the busiest single caribou location is inside best buy corporate hq

mental garden
#

@scenic radish I wish they would get rid of all of the ones around me too!

unreal orbit
#

Espresso is a PITA to make at home if you're making it for more than just yourself. I like having a machine, but when people are over I end up spending ~an hour just making damn coffee

sullen basalt
#

man... you need to streamline your workflow my man!

boreal pewter
#

You could have a look for a wife

unreal orbit
#

There's not much to streamline with a single portafilter machine

sullen basalt
#

one main advantage of a dual boiler setup is that you can crank out shots and steam milk at the same time

I've been hesitating about the fire8, but read mixed stuff about lovelace compatibilty

I buy this amazing instant coffee

ill have to take a picture when I get home

O_O

though i'm not much better. I order Amazon brand coffee because its cheap and it shows up at my door every month 😛

brisk glen
#

heh, im going to be doing that at some point soon when we buy a pot

#

i kinda need a pot that works with HA 😛

wet pilot
#

lol

brisk glen
#

aka brew and keep warm control

wet pilot
#

not sure about brew, but a cheap one with an on/off switch could be slightly controlled by a smart switch

brisk glen
#

that might work as well

#

as long as it keeps it warm while on

wet pilot
#

could get a cheap one and replace the control board with an ESP

brisk glen
#

im trying to be lazy here

wet pilot
#

actually, the ones that only have an on/off switch should be fully done with a smart switch

brisk glen
#

yah

#

ill take a look at one to use with my eve switch

#

my wife is going to love it

wet pilot
#

make sure its actually a coffee pot though, don't want to get 413 errors 😄

@hushed basalt How far could Broadlink's IR work? Cos apparently it says 8m but my Broadlink which is only around 5-6m away from the device and it is not working unless i'm 2-3m away. And nothing is blocking its path. The reason it's 5-6m apart is because i have another device on the other end so right now my Broadlink is basically in the middle.

wet pilot
#

sunlight can cause issues, indirect paths

hushed basalt
#

Yeah I'd say light or other IR pollution

#

Also I have two broadlinks

rough zenith
#

@wet pilot there isn't really any sunlight entering the room.
@hushed basalt woah i didn't know IR pollution exist. Let me see what i can find on Google and to fix this issue.

#

Thank you, both of you

hushed basalt
#

Incadenscent bulbs?

rough zenith
#

CFL

#

the one with ballast

hushed basalt
#

Hmm

#

You might need two broad links

#

Basically think of the broadlink as a light bulb and the tv etc as a camera

#

But a really crappy camera that can only take 1 x 1 pixel photo

#

If the light bulb is too weak or far away,

#

And the camera isn't pointed directly at the bulb but at the wall

#

It would be hard to tell if the bulb is on or not.

#

And if there's other things around that use the same frequency as the bulb, it gets even harder

orchid rose
#

I'm looking to start with a floorplan but damn this is going to be painful if I'll add each light overlayed one over the other... I might have to think of something else 😄

rough zenith
#

I see. Thanks for the explanation. It seems like i have no choice but to get another broadlink

Somethings wrong these 2 ISP have access to the same infra and the on on the right (BT) should no longer be connected to the network provider as they where forced to spin it off, further away from BT Retail. Either BT is making a loss or there is something dodgy going on

strange vapor
#

@pure vine The underlying network is resold at the same price to all of them, it's up to the ISP how much they want to charge on top. Same system at place in Ireland.

#

For a lot of them, the under lying network is commodity, and they try to sell you a triple play to increase the profit.

@hushed basalt fun story, before we bought 3PAR they used to ship them in mahogany boxes to customer sites, then they would have them picked up at the customer site and sanded down and relaqoured before shipping it to a new customer

hushed basalt

Lol

clear ferry

It lasted for a year or so after we bought them, but was more for show

I think 3PAR shipped 100 systems per year before the purchase, now we ship that every week
