I find my Bose QC35s too clinical, but I still use them when I travel because airports etc

languid junco
#

I was brainwashed, the first theatre I ever worked in was kitted to the 9s with sennheiser

#

except for the bose FOH kit, which I hated.

clever mortar
#

I've got QC25's that are great general purpose ones - just wish they used USB C power

clear ferry
#

In the office I usually use my MDR-XB950 or my MDR-XB70AP

#

I had the QC25 before I forgot them in some DC ๐Ÿคฃ

#

And never found them again

languid junco
#

I used to religiously buy the Sennheiser HD202 headphones

ick. I couldn't. I would definitely look like a dweeb

clear ferry

I've never tried anything koss but they have a good reputation

I know the ones

#

Ive seen em

languid junco
#

crapple has a good reputation but lacks where it counts, so i don't always believe hype

clear ferry
#

Remember everyone had them when I grew up, but atleast one person broke a pair every day

#

Things might have changed in 20+ years, but the design is the same atleast

languid junco
#

were they cheap or just expensive tat?

clear ferry
#

Think they were like $150 ish

#

and I think at some point they had a lifetime warranty, so you could replace them at a store if the broke

#

eeeeh

#

$15

#

not 150 ๐Ÿคฃ

languid junco
#

the ones I ran were $50NZ each. I went through a pair every three months, so it usually worked out

clear ferry
#

I haven't broken a pair of headphones in..... 14 years I think

#

And I throw them around the DC

and the fall off racks and shit

languid junco

clear ferry

Datacenter

languid junco
#

ah. so you get to play with the clouds all day ๐Ÿ˜›

clear ferry
#

Clouds are overrated

languid junco
#

I'm the guy standing next to a user going "hmm, your screen isn't working? is it plugged in? Nope? There's the problem"

clear ferry
#

I prefer proper IT ๐Ÿ˜‰

#

I'm the guy who fixes servers where the guy who installed it is either retired or dead, or where the partner has given up after troubleshooting for four years

languid junco
#

yeah. my little server cupboard in the hallway has a piece of white tape with "The cloud" written on it in sharpie

#

I run a gen 8 microserver as my file box, and a 5 year old shuttle runs my VMs

clear ferry
#

I used to run a C3000 blade enclosure + BL460c G7 with 192GB RAM and 24 cores as my main setup, plus a few itanium boxes and some older Intel servers, those are now retired and I just run most stuff on a Dell R510 with 12 cores and 64GB RAM with freenas and jails, and I have a little mini-itx machine I built that hosts my docker enviroment and sandbox \ jumpstation enviroment

languid junco
#

my friends go "why don't you use dropbox/onedrive/google drive/etc" and I go "A drive fails, $100. maybe once in a blue moon. That's my maintenance cost. the internet and power are cheap. I have 16tb of storage here.

clear ferry
#

And I run a pair of HPE Flexfabric 5900AF in my core with 40Gbit crosslinks, and some Aruba 2530 as distribution switches ๐Ÿคฃ

languid junco
#

not all of it is redundant, and redundancy is my backup. LOL

clear ferry
#

The R510 has 4x10TB + 4x4TB + 4x2TB + 480GB SSD, I need to replace the 2TBs with 10TBs at some point

languid junco
#

I'm running windows server because I have the licenses through uni, and I'm lazy as fuck.

#

pardon my french

clear ferry
#

Used to run everything in ESXi, moved over to SUSE and Freenas, because I have two racks of ESXi at work I can play with anyway

#

and I need some quiet in my studio ๐Ÿคฃ

languid junco
#

I'm looking at moving to freenas but it's a learning curve and I'm not fully sure of it yet

#

I do like the idea of moving my storage drives to iscsi and not having a drive bigger than 128gb on any machine including my gaming rig

hushed basalt
#

Operating systems are nothing more than things to host containers on to me :D

#

Bare metal too. :d

#

I would probably put my storage on containers if I could be bothered. But I'll leave it on my Synology for now

clear ferry
#

I understand FreeBSD jails more than I do docker containers so far atleast

languid junco
#

i can't iscsi from windows server, so I'm seriously considering moving my storage around to get on to freenas

clear ferry
#

sure you can ?

languid junco
#

< too lazy to figure it out

clear ferry
#

iSCSI has been supported on Windows server since 2008 atleast

hushed basalt
#

Try something simple, like Ceph :D

#

Don't use ceph

clear ferry
#

Scality > Ceph ๐Ÿ˜‰

languid junco
#

I've got my old microserver as a test bed running freenas. though I wish I'd just sat on the new server and learned freenas on that

hushed basalt
#

For professional development reasons, I think datacentre level storage management is going away for a lot of people

languid junco
#

yeah because the cloud means that's just SEP to them now

hushed basalt
#

I think a lot of professional enterprises will be using storage as a service more and more

languid junco
#

"Someone Else's Problem"

hushed basalt
#

I mean, who runs their own power station

#

Or treats their own water

clever mortar
#

Anybody with sufficient solar and storage ๐Ÿ˜‰

hushed basalt
#

Off grid systems aren't feasible for most :p

#

They only really make sense if you have a huge installation cost to get grid connected, like farmers or remote

languid junco
#

^ I live in NZ and used to frequently go to great barrier island (not to be confused with the reef in australia) they still don't have mains power there.

hushed basalt
#

But businesses would still be outsourcing the responsibility

#

Chad from HR isn't going down and fixing generator windings etc

languid junco
#

businesses on great barrier are a tin shed with the words "Fish bait" written on them in brushed paint

hushed basalt
#

True

languid junco
#

the only commercial space I know of there is the airport

hushed basalt
#

I think we're getting off track :D

#

My point is, knowing about low level infrastructure won't be that value imo if you're not working for a provider like aws, gcp, etc

#

More and more and more stuff is being moved to the big 3 at an accelerated pace

languid junco
#

yeah

#

I work for a construction company, the only places that still have in house servers are comms challenged sites like rarotonga, pago pago, etc.

#

and we're clouding the infrastructure with meraki, so that's going away too

hushed basalt
#

Yeah edge stuff basically

#

I live like 4000km away from the nearest big 3

#

I know about the need for on prem for latency reasons if nothing else :D

languid junco
#

I've got gigabit fiber to the premises in my house. I only run these servers to keep myself amused, and because I've amassed too much data to warrant throwing it all on the cloud. the storage would be too expensive

#

some people hoard physical objects, I hoard data.

#

lol

hushed basalt
#

Yeah I'm building a 3 node bare metal.k8s homelab

#

I get it

#

But I have no illusions that playing with real "servers" is a rare and valuable skill anymore

#

The kubernetes skills are super valuable though

#

Gigabit ;(

languid junco
#

I used to think 9mbps down was good

hushed basalt
#

I get 4mbps at work down

#

Adsl ๐Ÿคข

languid junco
#

yeah. I didn't say ADSL2+ where 24mbps down was good (uplink was still shite but that's another story)

hushed basalt
#

If I was pulling 4K content i would feel constrained a bit

#

For 1080p stuff it comes in 10 times faster than I could watch it

languid junco
#

I have unifi here at home, if I do a speedtest it'll be the AP that bottlenecks on my laptop

hushed basalt
#

Yeah if I don't stick to 5ghz my 2.4ghz will bottle neck

#

Can't even reliably watch 1080p Netflix

clear ferry
#

I do 500\500 at home and usually get 40-120 on cellular

languid junco
#

we get technicolor rebranded crap here for vendor provided router

#

I use a second hand HG659 because my grandfather still wants his telephone line, but it's off in a walled garden off my USG, just for the phone line and nothing else

#

the technicolor thing would lock up every two hours even after I'd deprovisioned it to just be an ATA

languid junco

I'm jealous of the guys who have vendors that provide fritzbox as their vpr

hushed basalt

Distraction of the month at the time anyways

#

We have netcomm stuff all over our nbn

#

Cough nbn chairman owns NetComm cough cough

languid junco
#

netcomm is aight. I use one of their m2m gateways when I travel

#

because where I go, getting any internet I need to leave it with a battery up on a hill somewhere, and point two yagis at eachother from a distance to connect

hushed basalt
#

I read about a Telstra tech who worked in Darwin

languid junco

too many valleys and not enough customers to bother putting a cell tower in that area.

hushed basalt
#

Then took 6 months off to work in Antarctica

#

Bit of a climate shock

languid junco
#

satellite is no fun.

#

we had a site in kiribati that was satellite

#

and I had to remote control machines with dameware over that.

#

those were late late nights

move the mouse. wait. four to six seconds later you'd see if the remote cursor was moving towards what you were aiming for.

hushed basalt
#

hushed basalt

Ssh over mosh works well for that sort of stuff

I joked that IPoAC would have been faster at one point

hushed basalt

languid junco
#

hushed basalt
#

Ha

#

But yeah mosh is your friend

#

But I know all that telco stuff is legacy

languid junco
#

luckily the worst site now is rarotonga and we now use connectwise control which is 10x more resilient than dameware

hushed basalt
#

Is this end user support?

languid junco
#

yup

hushed basalt
#

Dear god

#

Just send them new machines

#

For any issue at all

languid junco
#

the bean counters wouldn't have liked that.

#

some users though. it's a wonder I'm not going grey

#

particularly the ones that go "Can you fix the internet, it's going slow."

#

oh and the clincher on the raro site? The main exchange is across the road from the office

#

and when we were first mobilizing to there, they had a major fire in that exchange. it took out comms on the entire island for like a month and a bit

#

and there's no carrier competition. it's bluesky or no connection.

hushed basalt
#

You could try lasers

#

Just shoot lasers of internet at them

languid junco

I thought laser was how fibre worked. iono. I'm not an infra guy.

clever mortar

Yeah, but not in the GW range ๐Ÿ˜›

languid junco

I did my CCNA. I was going to be an infra guy. right as i completed CCNA4 they changed the exam and I'd have had to completely redo the modules to do the exam. I didn't bother.

clear ferry

I should do a CCNA at some point, lots of projects demand them

#

now I'm just "that guy that knows networks"

#

๐Ÿคฃ

languid junco
#

my crowning achievement is a wireless mesh network that scaled a 2500 acre farm

#

and then we gave up on it, so now the equipment is all goneski.

ok, so i don't know if this should be in homeassistant or not, since im in early brainstorm mode, but i have an idea.
i'm in the process of finishing my basement to take a rasp pi and mount it on the wall with a 7-10" screen. I'd like this to control my lights, link it to music, and maybe some other features. Would i need some smart switches in all my boxes for the app to connect to? do the Lutron dimmer switches work well?

@hushed basalt and I'm assuming it's touchlink compatible if I get the right hardware?

hushed basalt
#

Best bet is to buy a preflashed stick with antenna off the homeassistant forums

#

If you search cc2531 antenna homeassistant you'll find it

#

Then all you need to do is install zigbee2mqtt on anything with a usb and network port. Can be the same device as your homeassistant, or a raspberry pi by itself

#

And add a mqtt server as well

#

I think hass.io can do a lot of this point and click

scenic radish
#

Or just get an off-the-shelf radio and use ZHA...

#

Or Conbee and use deconz

#

Let's not forget that those are viable options too

chilly nymph
#

Taking home assistant out of the equation for a moment (because I'm trying to figure out what keeps crashing it), which of these solutions can I use without home assistant?

boreal pewter
#

Basically it's not allowed to say these words here ๐Ÿ™Š

scenic radish
#

@chilly nymph the Hue platform is rock solid

chilly nymph
#

@boreal pewter I'm going to use it again and in fact have it running. But I just want to get something working in the short term

#

I just sent this in a PM to @scenic radish but see below

#

My issue right now is time commitment. I'm selling myself short when I say I'm just a finance guy, as I've contributed to Foss before. But the reality is I work 60 hours a week right now in finance and am in the middle of a move. My short term goal is to set up zigbee lights with remotes of some sort, hoping to spend minimal time on initial setup.

My new place does not have light switches. The bedrooms have "pull strings" to turn on the lights. I don't own, so I can't do any wiring.

scenic radish
#

You can use the Hue bridge and its hardware by itself and then integrate it into HA later if you want

boreal pewter
#

It's still not allowed to talk about home assistant HERE ๐Ÿคท

scenic radish
#

Get some Hue dimmers and bulbs, connect them to the bridge, and you're good to go

chilly nymph
#

Oh. Yeah, I'm trying to do this without home assistant at the moment @boreal pewter

#

So.... That's why I thought that this was the best place to talk about it? It was a non home assistant hardware question that I asked

scenic radish
#

All config can be done in the official Hue app

#

It is

#

You're good

boreal pewter
#

Ah that kind of stuff

#

I don't like Hue for the price

scenic radish
#

You're not just buying hardware, you're buying support for the hardware and future software updates

#

It's a solid system. Generally regarded as one of the best

chilly nymph
#

I was given the bridge and given a smartthings hub. I also have a wink hub but I'm trying to transition off that

scenic radish
#

If you want a setup that requires minimal fuss, Hue is the way to go

chilly nymph
#

I also want something that supports touchlink because a lot of the remotes out there are touchlink. It seems like they both do

scenic radish
#

The app could be better but it's improved at least

#

The bridge does support touchlink, but I'm not familiar with what third party hardware works with it. You'd have to research that

chilly nymph
#

I'm ok with using something like zigbee2mqtt or another USB stick if I can use it/set it up on a standalone basis until I get HA stable

#

I will say I picked up some tradfri remotes for $0.99 at Ikea last night and they are surprisingly responsive. I paired 2 directly to a bulb

#

Much more responsive than the lutron connected bulb remote I have, which surprised me

boreal pewter
#

Yeah I have build something Tradfri too when I got my new cupboards but I use just Zigbee and the Conbee2 as gateway

chilly nymph
#

I connected the bulb to my wink hub for the moment

#

That looks nice. Are those lights battery powered?

boreal pewter
#

No those are the Ledberg Spots as well from Ikea, 3x4 from which I use 11 there

#

4 spots were 13โ‚ฌ, I cut off the connector and put some Amazon JST Connectors on it

chilly nymph
#

Pretty clean for being wired

boreal pewter
#

And they are plug n play in the 30w driver

chilly nymph
#

I'm wondering if there is a refresh coming because the bulbs were $1.99 and the remotes were $0.99 "while supplies last"

boreal pewter
clear ferry
#

Yeah, I have built some modded IKEA tradfri for my cabinets too

#

With 5050 LEDs connected to the IKEA drivee

boreal pewter
#

I think you just need the JST connectors and then you can actually put anything on it

clear ferry
#

My jsts didn't fit

#

So I opened the box and attached some old jst connectors I had to the LEDs and reused a jst 4way that matched that by soldering it inside the tradfri driver

Anyone know of any handy device where you can have one audio out, two audio in (preferably in phono) and will always prefer one input if there's signal?

#

No shortage of simply manual switches, it's ones which will do the equivalent of ducking a signal

clear ferry
#

So, a sensing audio device

#

Should be.. makeable with some logics that react to voltage change I guess

strange vapor
#

hmm, need to figure it out. Possibly need to look at how a good old fashion side chain works on a compressor for ducking!

@strange vapor you could try doing it all digitally

A RPI with a audio HAT that has two inputs and one output if that's an option

I have been searching for Bluetooth speakers for my patios. I want two speakers that connect with a cord. Battery operated and not a rock.....I want to mount them to the roof over my patio. I'm still at a loss to what TV to get :(

#

65" oled is so nice but the price is crazy

#

That level I may as well go UST projector and get an 120" screen

#

I'll probably settle on the 65" Samsung QLED.

802.11n 2.4ghz is a bit of a joke though :/

55" it's about the same

ocean mirage

Sounded like you like the OLED but I guess prices will come down in years

hushed basalt

My current tv is a 46"Samsung LCD from 2005

#

I think I'll get the 65" QLED and turn it into a bedroom tv when we get a house

#

And get a UST projector for the main area

#

Shame the wifi is rubbish in the samsung

#

But my house would have ethernet anyways

ocean mirage
#

Yeah that sounds like a solid plan to me

#

Iโ€™ll be shopping for TVs at some stage and might end up with the same one

hushed basalt
#

The Q60 65" samsung looked quite good at the price point

#

The hisense OLEDs didn't look good even though they're cheap

The LG looked noice. If you were getting 55" I'd get the LG hands down

#

But over 55" OLED is just bad value imo

ocean mirage

Iโ€™m probably going 65 inch

Current 1080 tv is 55

#

Yea its been wild. Bunch of lessons learned on this "lets run the largest electrical load on the cheapest energy products" project. It's amazing how far the "latest and greatest dev mode" vs. the "older more stable" build philosophy goes in a high tech home. Obviously you dont want to use obsolete stuff, but if we had stuck to older technologies we'd have much less problems.

#

the only thing worst than the thermostat debacle is the husband's refusal to let the cable boxes go

#

resulting in expensive analog cable-over-ethernet splitters and infrared relay issues (whcih the husband does not like)... whereas every friggen TV is smart, with plex, and the coop is putting in fiber next year (right now they are on DSL)

#

this guy's refusal to not have cable TV for ~12 months has added like $8k cost and a worse user experience to the smart home project. the wife (who makes the money) is awesome though so its really just the husband appeasement budget

#

kind of a role reversal there

Hi Guys, first time here and first time on discord. I've just started playing around with home assistant and decided this is the route I want to go for my new house we are building this spring!

#

I've watched the rapid development that's been going on with home assistant and it's impressive! I wouldn't say money is no object on our new home, but I would rather spend a little more for quality. Like John mentioned, I don't want to go with obsolete technology, but I don't want to be the on bleeding edge and have headaches. What would you guys go with for light switches?
