There are wifi OBD2 modules, but you'd probably have to make the integration yourself

clear ferry
#

Hmmmmmm I need a @light trout in a cage to make integrations for me ๐Ÿค”

unreal orbit
#

It would be cool to set one up to upload the data to an mqtt broker when you get home

clear ferry
#

I thought the WiFi OBD2 stuff was only to connect them to the phone via WiFi, as in they presented an access point for you to connect to

dark swallow
unreal orbit
#

I use that at my house. It works pretty well, not 100% though

clear ferry
#

Yeah it's the info that is most interesting, the presence detection I'm trying to implement with Bluetooth or camera I think ๐Ÿค”

unreal orbit
#

If you pull in too quickly and shut the car off it can miss the wifi connection

#

(I use mine for the front door lock btw, not garage opener)

dark swallow
#

Ah that makes sense too bad you can't hook it up to get power from the lights that stay on for like 30 seconds after turn the car off

clear ferry
#

I would like an integration for all three cars, that send the milage to ha, and correlates it with my insurance milage cap , that would be sweet

dark swallow
#

That makes sense are you in the US or canada?

unreal orbit
#

Just design your own OBD2 ๐Ÿ‘

#

Or just set it up with torque and tasker

clear ferry
#

I need a coder gimp ๐Ÿค”

unreal orbit
#

Oh I'm in California if you were asking me

dark swallow
#

I started to set it up with torque and tasker but the torque app is such a pain to use it needs a big update to make it much easier to use

clear ferry
#

Norway here ๐Ÿ˜›

unreal orbit
#

Actually that's a great idea with the lights

#

I was just about to hook it into a fuse directly

dark swallow
#

@clear ferry oh I was going to say the Automatic would be perfect because it gives you millage, location etc, but only works in the US

#

I'm pretty sure they blacklist non-us vins from working

clear ferry
#

Oof

unreal orbit
#

I used to use torque back in the day. I might give that a shot. It would be nice to automatically log gas mileage data

dark swallow
#

the real oof is it costs $100 and it used to include all the services for 3 years but now its 3 months for all the data then $5 a month

#

the only free stuff is like the obd errors and driving history

unreal orbit
#

I don't know how well it's going to work when I use android auto though...

dark swallow
#

no real time info

unreal orbit
#

Alright now I convinced myself to buy another bluetooth obd2 connector ๐Ÿคฃ

#

I paid for the torque pro app years ago, might as well get use out of it now

dark swallow
#

Same! I have it installed and have the connector in my car but I literally do nothing with until dash light comes on

#

So I am at work and I rebooted my raspberry pi, but now it won't come back online, Usually I just power cycle it manually and it comes back on. Since its storming outside I am kind of hoping for a slight brown out to power cycle the pi

clear ferry
#

I do mechanic stuff myself on all my cars, so the OBDeleven plug I have is often used ๐Ÿ˜› but some cheap China ones would be good enough for permanent installing in my cars

#

@dark swallow long live out of band management, not that shoddy raspberry pi stuff ๐Ÿ˜˜ ๐Ÿ˜‰

dark swallow
#

Lol right. I need to put a smart switch on it so I can power cycle it anytime

#

except for the fact I use most my smart plugs through HA so I caught myself in a paradox

unreal orbit
#

Just have one sonoff switch that can toggle the server on and off

dark swallow
#

@clear ferry does the OBDeleven app only work with their obd plugs or can it work with any plug?

clear ferry
#

Only their plugs

#

And only VAG autos

dark swallow
#

@unreal orbit and yeah I'm only kidding about not being able to control it without HA I can always just ask google assistant

unreal orbit
#

True. But then you have to have a cloud integration ๐Ÿ˜‰

dark swallow
#

@clear ferry dang because that system looks slick

#

and lol again not opposed to them just rather not use them when I don't have especially for automations or other devices where other people expect a direct response

#

My family will hit a physical button and if the light doesn't come on immediately they freak out and start spamming the button. which just makes it worse

unreal orbit
#

I'm opposed to them if that's the only option. I don't like the idea that it's just a matter of time before I will lose control of my devices

#

Every cloud service will end eventually.

dark swallow
#

cough nest cough

unreal orbit
#

Exactly

#

That was one that I thought for sure would be around longer

dark swallow
#

But yup! I agree, or logitech

#

i have two remote hubs working perfectly fine with HA dec/jan comes around both stop working because they auto updated with no warning

unreal orbit
#

Auto-updating platforms are the worst

dark swallow
#

then I did the logitech fix and one still auto updated a day after i did it, kept doing it for weeks until it finally started to work again!

#

if only there was a better ir remote hub like logitech has

unreal orbit
#

I've heard good things about the broadlink one, but others swear by logitech so I'm not sure which one is better

dark swallow
#

same, just the first remote my dad got has a terrible touch screen

#

also why can't they add support for using more than one hub in the same house!

orchid rose
#

my guess is that logitech has far more features, but broadlink works extremely well for my purposes. I use a Harmony 650 remote for other stuff though and love it

dark swallow
#

Yeah logitech does have plenti of features including the ability to pair it to bluetooth devices and not just rely on ir works great with my diy kodi

#

all kodi commands go through bluetooth volume still goes to avr like it should over ir

vale slate
#

@dark swallow you need to get your raspi on a UPS with an auto power cycle

dark swallow
#

@vale slate yeah I know I just don't know a which one to get

#

oh and the ups hats are constantly out of stock

clear ferry
#

I should grab a ups from a customer next time they replace one, but usually the batteries are almost dead by then

#

Could probably get some cheap replacement somewhere

proven spruce
#

aren't batteries the most expensive part in those

clear ferry
#

Depends on the model is my experience

#

I need something that can keep a blade enclosure, three blades, two core switches and two Nas boxes alive for atleast 15 minutes ๐Ÿ˜›

#

Graceful shutdown is always preferable

dark swallow
#

Lol most of my things I need graceful shutdowns on are raspberry pi's (HA, nas running omv, and kodi) so running them for 15 minutes would be so easy

#

the nas external hdds on the other hand I have no clue 2 of them are from like 2007 and probably have a lot of power draw

clear ferry
#

That is just the stuff I need on ups, I have four times that in the rack๐Ÿ˜‚

dark swallow
#

Lol I figured, I ideally I would want my pi's with poe so I can easily manage the power of all of them from one spot but i only have one B+ the others are justs B's

clear ferry
#

There is a Poe hat right? Doesn't that work with all? I thought it just converted Poe to a usb plug 56v-5v

dark swallow
#

No it only works with the B+ because there are 4 special gpio pins for direct power

#

sorry for directing the power from the ethernet to the hat and back

valid halo
#

I had a stupid moment today

#

Showed upto therapist 24 hours ahead of time

#

Node Red tried to warn me. My time checker said it was 1400 minutes in the future

dark swallow
#

lol thats great!

#

What do you mean node red tried to warn you? you mean it saw you going to your appointment and was like not today?

valid halo
#

No no

#

I was setting up a Alexa Reminder automation

#

and the "time diference" between Epoch Event and Epoch now converted to 1400 minutes. I even converted that into hours and saw 24. I just didn't put the facts together that I was looking too far into the future.

#

Hell the date was 17th not the 16th

#

I just had a brain goof

dark swallow
#

Oh I see! that makes more sense!

valid halo
#

So I show up and my therapist is like "Uh hey! ^_^; You're supposed to be here tmmrw" and I'm like ":O ... x_x"

Hi all, I have lurked around the HA project for quite some time. Now buying a house with the misses and excited to finally get to implement a system of my own. The home we are buying has a 3 zone furnace setup. I have been following the google induced drama around the Nest Thermostats and I dont subscribe to ecobee's cloud first mentality. What are other thermostats that I should be looking at? Priorities for me are ease of use in case my older inlaws are in the house, wife acceptance and of course HA integration. Appreciate any advice.

amber bramble
#

There's a few Z-Wave thermostats that look mostly like normal thermostats, or Venstar has a wifi thermostat with a fully local control API

valid halo

IIRC they make Z-wave and Zibbee Thermo....ninja'd

hallow stratus

I can't find the setting on my router for some reason

dark swallow

Is it a router from the cable company or one you bought?

hallow stratus
#

#

VM Superhub 3

dark swallow
#

Yeah I think they locked it down so you can't change the DNS Settings. You'll have to get a router and put the Superhub in modem mode

#

Or just have individual devices point to Ad Guards DNS

hallow stratus
#

Ah man, that's just great, thought it might of been something like that.

#

Is Pihole the same?

dark swallow
#

Sadly yes, pihole works the same way. I'm in the same situation but with AT&T

#

It should work if you just point individual devices to the DNS server though, doesn't work for things like smart tvs though

hallow stratus
#

Okay cool, how would I go abouts do this?

#

Any downsides, besides manually entering for every device?

#

Oh, so you are saying it has to be setup on the device itself?

dark swallow
#

Not really any downsides except having to do it to each device

#

and yes you have to do to each device and change the DNS settings

#

some allow you to set DNS settings based on the connection, like whenever connected to this wifi network use these dns servers

hallow stratus
#

Ah, I got to many devices for that. Nevermind, appreciate your help @dark swallow ๐Ÿ‘

strange vapor
#

It's really popular in Irish Trad music.

#

Have actually carried the Variax into a trad session as they wanted extra people in and it was the only guitar I had down home with me. Confused the hell out of some people when I set it to acoustic and started working away!

clear ferry
#

haha yeah, I know, I played it in concert a few times, and people go like whaaaaaat, but that is an electric guitar

#

I don't like the 12 string sound, but the 6 string jumbo is better than any of my 6 string jumbos ๐Ÿคท

strange vapor
#

Generally tend to use just the Jumbo as well, although in the case above I used the Banjo once or twice to truly freak people out ๐Ÿ˜ƒ Also find that I can pull off stuff on the Variax with it's electric guitar action which I can't pull off on a proper acoustic.

#

I generally tend to cart a keyboard to trad sessions, but you have to be there early to get space to setup. When that fails, my preference is acoustic guitar, but if there's already a few there I'll carry in an acoustic bass guitar.

clear ferry
#

I've wanted to buy an acoustic bass for some time, but I think I would rather prefer to rebuild one of my electric ones to a fretless ๐Ÿค”

#

or get a small upright like the one Tony Levin has

strange vapor

The Acoustic Bass is great, but has to be hooked into PA or have a small amp.

Even the likes of the Blackstar Bass Fly does the job handy for small sessions.
