Gone
But never forgotten in the modsโ secret stash
Don't tell big solar panel, they will use the 2nd sun to sell more solar panels
My panel is outside, bring on the second sun
So I was talking with the parents about solar... Realized we have enough land to just do a ground install. Gonna skip the roof entirely I think. May as well when the option's there, right?
if the house or trees don't block the view, sure
No trees, house does to the west of where we're thinking, but that shouldn't be a huge issue. Need to verify that obviously.
It's a five acre plot, so it's not packed that tight.
Front yard would be the best spot, but then you have a bunch of solar panels in the front yard.
Either way, too broke to do it right now.
I'd always do ground if you can. Roofs are a compromise on size, drilling holes in the roof and a pain in the ass if you need a new roof
You can always start small. 1 or 2 panels
It's been raining here pretty much all day. Right now ts just drizzling. But I have a freaking tree in fire in my front yard.
Trees aren't supposed to smoke
Humans aren't as well and many do it anyway.
Volunteer fire department just showed up, but it was already out. They looked all over and no smoke
weird, last night my HA stopped talking to my Lutron Main Repeater. Went through hell trying to get it to work again, downgrades, rollbacks, reboots, all that. Eventually said screw it, removed the integration, added it back again, and presto, everything works again just flawlessly
not support, just a frustrating anecdote
https://www.phoronix.com/news/Intel-Linux-USB4STREAM
This is neat
This is indeed neat
so it gets worse ๐ my RadioRA2 repeater has decided that it wanted to break
keeps going into safe mode, wont hold a program
probably gonna have to move up to Ra3
Not sure if I should post this problem and subsequently convoluted idea I need feedback on here or in #the-workshop
tldr its trying to determine where traffic patterns are for where to put a display in a hallway
I'm part of a makerspace that is located in a basement with a storefront visible to those who wander into the basement to see what's there. There's three other businesses in the basement alongside us so we're not the only storefront.
Our main entrance is sort of buried a little bit behind some support pillars, but we have a second entrance (because we're two suites merged) that contains a large window facing the hallway right near the stairwell that enters the basement.
We have a (small) display outside our unit next to our main entrance, that's sort of buried behind the support pillars but frankly what i want to get is the number of people who peer in the window and subsequently go over to see the small display.
I want to determine what parts of the hallway are worthwhile locations to enhance the design in our windows and where we should have information. The large windows and main entrance are physically very close, but they aren't very visible from each other.
My theory for this was to set up two cameras pointed at the windows and connect them to frigate or some other consumer, record any instance of movement in two specific zones, and analyze that information to determine if the secondary windows should have a full display, or something else entirely
There's no support here. And if you are not sure where to ask then use #find-a-channel
Check out shademap.app
is not a home assistant idea. I don't plan to use ha for this
didn't post it in any other channels
So you're on the wrong Discord server then.
gotcha. will ask elsewhere! thank you!
30c isn't that hot (assuming outside)
I mean its also high humidity sooo
its not straya hot but for us its rather hot
The rooms on the 2nd floor have a similar temperature here. Living room downstairs is still around 23
I mean my appartment is still habitable, last year it became completely inhabitable and it was so bad I slept on the balcony lol
I'm currently building a docker container proxy overlay.
It will essentially be a viewer for another page that you can manipulate with css & add Javascript elements to from the docker-compose. So if you have a dashboard at 10.11.12.13:141516 you could set it so that when you view this container at 10.11.12.13:8765 it shows 10.11.12.13:141516 with a clock in the corner or if you use a service to chat with 6 other people you could put labels with their names & local TZ under each person, etc.
I'm designing it so that you can pass your own CSS or JS, similar to how a browser extension does it, but I want to build a dozen or so pre-set tools that can be easily applied, like clock, date, an image/animated GIF (NOT Peanut butter), a PIP frame of another website, but I'm struggling to think of some more simple tools that users may want to overlay onto a dashboard.
I thought this might be a place where people may have some ideas.
Any things you think would be a good addition?
No this is where we have a sip of cool water
#the-workshop is for diy stuff but what you are asking for is much more involved in software development than it is in relationships to homeassistant
So this may be best suited for a discord guild that focuses on such
or on the forum
I'm curious what OS you're using that allows for ports higher than 65535
TV hackers
lol, I'm not asking for help building it, I'm just asking "around that water cooler" if anyone has something they'd like to see there. A non technical ask for the common man in a group where people are more likely to be interested

right, but here is will immediately scroll off the screen because some people shitpost here. A post on the forum will give you a dedicated place
Obviously using non-real numbers, asking about a concept so the actual port doesn't matter
I know lol, I was just being pedantic
the best kind of correct
pedanterect
But if I post there I need to come back & people will still be answering after I've already gotten the project done & forgotten. I was looking for a couple "whoever's in the room" potential ideas nothing more, I'll be implementing it in a couple hours at most
there's no other place and your request is already off the screen ๐คท
in any case, maybe somebody will make a (useful) comment
I asked in active chat on a couple tech threads, the idea for animated GIFs came from one of them
hi i am the shitposter
When somebody tells you what they are, believe them
I do believe Morgan Freeman
I don't even own a home I am not sure why I am in a discord for home automation.
some people automate their boats
I can automate my cardboard box
Raccoons can automate their dumpsters
but can you automate the automations?
Yes.
Yes.
there ya go, tearing a hole in the spacetime continuum again
Yes.
Ooo, There is a good trek debate... Was Picard right to not use it?
yes
We need to build one of these to threaten AI with
More Clint Eastwood, less Jean Luc Picard
Afternoon, anyone want to see some harddrive abuse?
I'm so happy I have cameras
Don't mind the shovels, haven't gotten around to them yet ๐
Part of me is hoping they let me keep the drive and I'll just run it through a whole bunch of tests and then they can send me another one too lol
cant reliably request a linked clean (vacuum runs then mop, i dont own a combo) from HA so ive got to replicate it myself UGH
those "cycle" things are template helpers from the rest980 integration
otherwise i wouldnt have enough info to know when it stops cause recharging i Think is considered the same as docking? idk
ignore the silly roomba names
Our cats shed too much hair apparently, I had to add extra steps into my cleaning automation just to force the damn thing to go back to the dock and empty itself more often than it thinks it needs to
finally upgraded my cameras from wifi wyze v3s to some amcrest PoE cameras. seem much more stable. im not sure how to get the camera sensors to show up as entities that i can use in node red flows, my old flows are from when you ran frigate HACS integration, now im running it as an add on App
i was thinking of trying the LPR functionality now that i have higher res cameras
this is probably the least abuse this package has seen during its trip
Still....
Oh I know
I can see that abuse
grifting amazon is always a +1
i have a video of USPS yeeting a package out of their car several feet. i sent it to the local supervisor and he called me and apologized, said he would address it w/ the carrier. carrier did it again next delivery.
I'm ok wiht 99% of the packages I have being thrown, very very rarely do I order fragile things
But hard drives are an exception
The best part is he took a picture from where he threw it from..
I wouldn't have even looked at Frigate except for that
i like how he turned around and snapped that pic at the end
He could have just walked up the sidewalk 15 feet to the right
no extra drive :/
but took money on the drive and the sorry we screwed up fee to add 6 more TB
now I'm second guessing spending 10 dollars more and gettign 10 TB more, but then I have to do more then just swap out 1 drive, I'd ahve to swap parity
6 more TB lol. My largest drive in my house is a 1 TB ssd
lol
You are going to spend more.
given that refurb enterprise drives carry a longer warranty then new consumer drives, having dual parity and a small amount of disks makes me willing to gamble a bit
I bought that drive les than a year ago for 250 euro's
Supporting the industry's best response times for an 26TB a nearline drive, the MDD 3.5 HDD enables the fastest data transfers thanks to our comprehensive advanced caching technology.Meet your storage workload requirements in the most efficient and cost-effective data center footprint available o...
agreed
22 tb is 499 though then I could just leave my partiy drives alone, but hmmm
I'm not doing nefarius things though ๐ Wife does a lot of photography and videos.... she's a fricken packrat
its "Art"
I've been buying refurb drives for my dual redundant RAID array for a while. I've only had one go bad and I've saved a bunch of money
I had a 12tb drive drop from the array, but I think I have a fault cable as there zero realocated sectors or UDMA errors
or my HBA got to warm...
Guess I'll find out shortly after running it through a preclear
200 dollar schucked WD, believe its a white label red drive
5 years powered on hours, probably 6 months of spin time though
Drive failures have gone way down in the last decade or so
I just don't worry about it anymore
yes they have, I have a bunch of 4tb WD reds that I retired only because I didn't want to pay the electricty costs to run them
I used to keep a spare or two handy at all times. That's just a waste now
i lost a bunch of pictures to a drive failure a few years back. that was a bummer. conveniently we had made printed photo album books regularly during that phase so we had a lot of the good ones at least in a physical format.
I don't have a NAS or anything, but I had a cheap SSD that I was using for local backups go read-only the other day
First time I've had that happen
this was like, ~2008 - 2014 era, and the drive was from around then as well. I did not learn my lesson and i still dont back anything up outside of uploading stuff to google photos
a $500+ refurb noname brand drive? shipped from amazon? what could go wrong!
https://serverpartdeals.com/ why not from here
Most mine are actually, MDD is just house brand impf Go Harddrives
Not like they do anything other then wipe them and test them
Speak for yourself. I have a 22TB on my coffee table I need to install. I am below 10TB on the server
I bought it pre price jump too
love when its so obvious it represents temp internally as .5C and its converted poorly to fahrenheit ๐ญ
Reminder google got worse today
Wait what
google elected to set even more money on fire per search now for some reason
You may ask how we at the Change Bank, make money? Itโs simple, volume.
It is a lot easier to lie when you aren't forced to show receipts
counterpoint: absolutely nobody on the entire planet can fully define "make its search engine fully artificial intelligence" to any degree
but it sounds scary
and has the word "AI" in it
You know those sites at the top of results that is useless and wrong but have good SEO? Well they are now the "new truth"...
Why do you need to be linked to various sites with source material when the AI will just give you the "truth".
source please
That is how I understood the announcement. Although I could be glass half empty. Will have to wait until it rolls out to be sure.
my thought is that "going fully AI" is so poorly defined that it can mean literally anything
I mean, we can guess, right
is the search box an LLM chat now?
is there more machine learning in PageRank?
did they hook it up to the torment nexus?
but like
meh
gone are the days where you'd type "butterflies" into a google search and be presented with "Kevin's butterfly website"
so who gives a shit really ๐
So from what I can see, currently the search box has a button to go to "AI mode" and then it is a LLM chat.
It looks like it is not currently default. But I am not sure if its fully rolled out etc...
haha, here's my favourite part of this whole thing: I opened my browser, right, new tab, type some shit, look at the results page
problem is
I switched to Kagi a year ago
but in my head I'm searching on Google because Google has poisoned my mind
we're so fucked
To web search is "to google" it has become the verb.
yeah but to the point where my lizard brain kinda just assumed "they control the entire experience of searching" even though I'm paying to not have them do that
hilarious
maaaann. it sucks how there really aren't good automatic blind solutions
I successfully got home assistant on radxa e20c
What a hassle!
Burn armbian onto an sdcard
Sd card into device
Install ch340 driver on windows laptop
Connect usb a to c cable between e20c debug port and laptop
Open tabby, serial connection to the correct COM (check device manager to find out which port) then use baud rate of 1500000
Terminal access then wget a webtool waxgourd dongle tool, install using dpkg
Access its webui then burn HAOS community version for rk3528pi onto the emmc
Shutdown and take sd card out
Connect ethetnet cable to e20c
Done
Just in case a rando stumbles onto the server looking for how to do this bte
If you want to leave some kind of how-to, you should do that in #1284960456880029707 - here nobody will find it.
It's also just a fraction of performance but a gain in efficiency
Can anyone help? Looking to automate this. When the threaded rod gets really hot I want it to turn off the device, maybe a temperature sensor and a smart plug?
Modify a switchbot to hold pliers
This is very triggering... I might have to walk this one off...
interested as well, following
but recepticals outside of the US would NEVER ALLOW ANYTHING BAD TO HAPPEN
If it was US then there would be no photo as the building would have been lost...
for visibility
thanks for the stranger, kind gold

i also choose this guys wife
ban ban ban ban
Instead of a slow-blow fuse, you could try the audiovisual auto-alert style
Mine looks like about 350A
There you go, just need to find the closest NATO-equivalent
16amp also has a smell alert
A delicious smell
That cow won't be laughing for long
so , i heard something about HA adding RF support? does this mean I can automate stuff that uses rf remotes like my fan?
Yes
sweet! what do i need to send an rf signal? is there usb antenna like for zigbee
Check out #1284966353798697001 with the recommendation tag
I hope itll hold, im only using it for a dozen lightbulbs, door sensor and like random nick nacks
I'm going to drop this here because I can't find a better place for it. I got my CNC machine connected to HA via MQTT and made a dashboard for it. (It's like the opposite of 3D Printing, but doesn't fit that topic category.) The spindle live grid updates in real time with the x,y coordinates. Automations will come later. Its almost 1 am and I gotta work in the morning. Figured people here could appreciate it.
#1284960456880029707 would be the channel to present own projects.
I was thinking that would be for people promoting their businesses.
Can also be showing projects, short how-to's or the like.
Hello community! One month ago I got the keys to my new home, completely renovated last year and just recently done moving over all of my stuff, making the home truly feel mine.
I also decided to dive into the rabbit hole of home automation. The house has LED spots /everywhere/ and I wanted to transform the biggest room on the first floor into a really cool and modern media room, with tons of RGB lights everywhere.
So, first thing I did was order a bunch of RGBWW Zigbee spots to replace the ones in that room, a SMLight Zigbee coordinator, and a Raspberry Pi for my HA server. Everything arrived over the course of a few days and yesterday I finally got everything to work. I can control my lights from HA now. I just need to still create a couple of scenes for it.
I also have window shutters that work with an RF remote, so I bought a Broadlink univeral remote to learn various signals so I can now also control my shutters from HA. Perfect for while I am at work and it is unexpectingly sunny out, I can just close them remotely so it doesn't get too hot inside.
Congratulations on the new home!
Thank you! After everything started to work yesterday, I got so excited to continue with more stuff.

ok, for the chill bit: I can see that my small balcony solar produces more power than my AC uses :D
@last cedar how long have you had your own emoji?
Setup the ha-mcp and start vibe coding automations and dashboards and never look back
Quite a while, I have had it on my door entry system for about 2 years ๐
I thought it was a cat then got sad
Needs more UniFi silver
Heya guys - any of you using the Aqara G410 doorbell?? Wondering if it works just fine with HA? I don't really care much about the recording stuff in regards to HA, but I would like to do an automation if the button is pressed. No sounds should be played, but I want all my smart lights throughout the house to blink for a couple of seconds instead. ๐
#1284966353798697001 might know more.
Ah thought that was for more "real support" hehe - I*ll move it there thanks
<@&330946878646517761> probably
lets see how this goes.
ive already got an automation that sends the kids notifications on their tablets then shuts off the kids wifi when tasks are assigned to them. then when they complete them, my wife and i get notifications with confirm/deny to re-enable their wifi
I've been playing too much rct2 and they don't have any vertical lift hills in the game
Would be nice for some compact designs though
Maybe better on the upside than the downside?
probably. just take a nap
the only question is, would the rollercoaster work better in podman or docker
They failed to set the container restart options correctly.
I love rollercoaster games where you can fling innocent civilians into the abyss
Don't forget about letting them walk into the abyss too
true...
or make a rollercoaster ride that's like 600G because you've gone from world height to the very bottom of the game's intended limits
okay discord
A proper park value bomb
Or the coasters that end up talking years to finish because they're running so slowly
And queues holding hundreds of guests so they can't leave the park
If your Rollercoaster Tycoon can't give me the physical manifestation of internal decapitation, you've already failed
Looking at you, RollerCoaster Tycoon World
Wait I thought the series stopped at 2 ๐
if only
Also openrct2
The kingpin of running rct2 in 2026
It gives a lot of qol improvements and increased limits for a ton of things
I just wish Planet Coaster supported multiplayer functionality
Like guest counts, ride counts, sprites now go up to like 65k instead of 10k
Or was it more
Lol
That game would've been absolute bomb if I could build a rollercoaster haven with my crazy friends lmfao
I once got stuck on a Superman coaster right at the end waiting for the next group to get on so we could offboard. We were horizontal, face down
Atlanta, GA in the summer, so yes also very hot
it's been a long, long time since I've been to Six Flags there
Feet were supported, chest was supported, belt from chest through the legs was unfortunately also โsupportingโ
Good ab workout
I had a season pass for a while in college
When I was 12-13, my mom find the best babysitter; One 'Six Flags, La ronde' pass for each of me and my brother.
We must've gone 3-4 times a week during the whole summer!
Best 150$CAD she spent back then i bet
I got a fast pass with my cousin one time, and the park was surprisingly empty for whatever reason. We were allowed to go straight from the Batman exit back to the empty queue. Did that four times in a row. The latter two were not great ideas
It's hard for me to believe that a cat would put up with any part of this: https://www.threads.com/@jaysaitou/post/DY6jkyODXUS?xmt=AQG0EUrfpmVSrP1Omu_aijGdKvZAFkkCEueo8_GEAGQwxDpE8KFije1PwNk9slB6teZ-lyFc&slof=1
Unless they were given a heavy dose of gabapentin beforehand
The water, the soap, the hair dryer ๐คท
Therefore, I must conclude that cat is high on something
unbothered. moisturized. happy. in his lane. focused. completely flourishing.
lmao what a spot on reference too
Is he the Moo Deng of the new year?
I think he ate Moo Deng
Man, the Content Description buries the lede:
Content Description: a baby hippo is laying on the ground with its mouth wide open
If it were real there would be rioting all over the world
Witness: Harambe
No
I hope this doesn't count as a support question...
|| why does a bananipi and a raspberrypi taste the same? Shouldn't they taste different? ||
asking the forbidden questions
Just noticed a bug on the https://analytics.home-assistant.io/ page
I can't even tell how those should be labeled. The others seem almost random
Yeah that too. If you click the colored label blocks in the last column it hides/shows the related graph line. mousing over the related graph gives the version. The more recent blocks order bottom to top by version with newer lower. That relationship goes sideways at some point for older versions. Time for whoever maintains that page to take look
Another non support question, if I get a car with HA integration, can I park it next to my lawnmower and have it piggy bag onto the car somehow?
Only if you have a ramp for the lawnmower to drive up onto the car with, lawnmower can't jump very well and you don't want to discourage it from being with it's car friend
I am looking for pot lights with halo accent lighting that also supports direct independent control so I can use a dual channel zigbee/thread module to control... but every affordable option I've seen so far have integrated controls that force you to use the modes they support. does anyone have ideas?
Probably, in the correct channel
I searched but the thread channels are way too hard to find stuff
plus I think this is pretty niche
You are welcome to open your own question in there
where? #1284966353798697001 ?
Yep that seems good

But then, technically a cucumber is
I dont understand the logic - it it tastes good, it is a fruit ๐
isnt a tamato a fruit also
LOL
something about the seeds ... if they are in the core
@clever mortar that's not true - Anything that has a seed is fruit...it doesn;t matter if they grow above or below ground ๐
๐
tomatoes, the snotty fruit
really...????
Fricc
shit whats this
feels the comedy
tamato isn't really an anytihng, tomaco on the other hand actually is..
Tomato is a berry, which is a fruit and cucumber is also a fruit, but the deal is, in botany the fruit is really just the seed bearing part, where as the vegetable is pretty much everything else.
Both tomatoes and cucumbers bear the seeds inside them, and so they are fruits, they both evolve from the flower, like an appel or a pear does. And that's pretty much all there is to it.
Given that we are talking a lot about tomatos in here the channel should be called #tomato-chat
You're right, we should instead be talking about ๐
lol
๐ฅ ๐ฐ ?
aren't most "vegetables" really something else entirely... frutis, legumes, tubers...
You run this wierd cross over problem between Botany and Culinary
And where do the monkeys fit?
probably in dromedary, depending on if you're playing SimCity or not.
And has anybody asked the Librarian what he thinks?
(just don't call him a monkey, ok?)
I'm guessing that's a reference I don't understand. ๐

I'm a D&D nut job, so I've had a lot of people recommend that series (err... world?)
Its not so much a series right?
Well, there are series in it, but yeah - connected world ish
and a point and click adventure game if I recall.
Didn't ever come across that one
Platforms: PlayStation, DOS, MS-DOS, Sega Saturn, Macintosh operating systems
...that has to be the oddest collection of platforms I've seen.
Dates it nicely too
I'm pretty sure that PlayStation was still in Windows time frame though

I want to start discussion about what docker images do you guys use for HomeBridge, MQTT and other components.... I used daxingplay homebridge, worked great... and also tried oznu for HomeBridge... extremely easy to setup
whatelse you guys run on docker? InfluxDB, Grafana...?
homebridge is on my list, but I hadn't gotten to setting it up, so I'm eager to hear what others are using ๐
I'm running eclipse-mosquitto for the mqtt component and retrohunter/apcupsd-cgi for the apcups component
@last plaza everything ๐
@feral blaze that's great... I know @austere musk runs everything on docker... he is the one that gor me into it
@dusty pasture are you running eclipse-mosquitto on docker?
i recently setup apcupsd on my ubuntu as well
I'm trying to get my Media downloading stuff working in Docker
@last plaza Dasher - https://hub.docker.com/r/clemenstyp/dasher-docker/ Home Assistant MQTT - eclipse-mosquitto:latest HomeBridge - oznu/homebridge:latest
I was just thinking the SAME thing by the way "Asking what others are running" - I'm looking to find a good piece of software that can allow me to do airplay to my firestick or roku..
@last plaza yep, I am
@trim cliff airconnect is what the airsonos hassio addon is using
I think that does chromecast and sonos at least for airplaying too
Any piece of hardware that you must connect to via wi-fi in order to set it up should die in a fire. </rant>
@midnight adder What happened
@dusty pasture ++ for the beard
@dusty pasture also, your homepage link on github is broken ๐
@pure vine Oh I was just in a mood. Setting up new Wemo Mini's and of course they work like crap.
I just very much dislike the "Connect to the devices Wi-Fi. Now have it update itself with your actual wi-fi". Never seems to go well. I miss the log in, configure, reboot crap.
@midnight adder that's why I use the ardunio ide with these devices
I haven't looked into that yet. this was supposed to be any easy christmas gift i say I wanted...
Osram Lightify app is guilty of sucking at this as well
Relying on 2 wireless devices to talk eachother through connecting to a network just seems... foolhardy.
Have I set up a router of wireless before? Yes, I have. But that was a choice I made due to lazyness and if I ran into trouble I could always hard wire into the bastard.
*off of wireless
The IKEA stuff is good the gateway is Ethernet connected
@pure vine how does the bulb/remote updating work for IKEA's stuff? It's certainly going online to get those updates.
what updates?
firmware updates
when I set up mine, I noticed updates propagate
you can track them from the app if you have a hub
well yes
it would need to hit the internet for a firmware update..
it's very fast after it's set up though. doesn't hit any external server to interact with lights
yeah, that's true
I just didn't know how the firmware update works, if it's done via the gateway pushing to the bulbs, or if the bulbs are dialing out individually
the gateway makes more sense, but then do gateway-less bulbs just never get updates?
oh, I don't know about that
no worries, just idle thoughts about it
@void solar I think the gateway does it and pushes it out
interesting
I still don't like the idea of using isopropyl alcohol as a window cleaner, my mom is insisting on it
it is great during winter time ๐
Yeah donโt place cameras up in the dark...
having issues with an alexa skill to read a sensor status. i keep getting "This intent is not yet"
i'm using the cloud. nothing has changed with the documentation for alexa has it?
@proud plaza That reminds me i need to hang my luftaten out my window, where did you put yours
i have power in the shed so from there ๐
I was going to put it there, but i want to collect data from the frount of my house

anyone willing to help me with a docker issue? /usr/bin/python: can't open file './sshreachme.py privkey':

@worn trellis what docker image are you trying to run?
is that custom python file that you are trying to run inside the docker environment?
@last plaza it's just a python script to create a tunnel and maintain the connection
what hardware are you running?
rpi2 hassio
ok... if you can access the command line, or via ssh, you can create a systemd service that runs that python code in the background as a daemon
I have access to command line.. didn't know I had access to systemd with the hass.io / resinOS stuff
I am not a docker expert, but I have run python code in the background before... it is very easy and straight forward
ok... you can also use pm2 if you can't access systemd
have you done this with the resinOS hassio stuff? I don't see a way
he's not going to understand where you're coming from...we need more skalavala's using hassio ๐
oh the places it could go!
I figured he was off base a little.. I still think that a docker is the way to do this.
on a normal install, yes, i'd run it from the OS as a daemon
excellent!
@worn trellis need to write a dockerfile to build your own image with your app in it
I have moved on to testing this to see if it will work any way.. I've created a reverse ssh tunnel.. On the hass side, i've got it directing to 127.0.0.1:8123 to serve hass.. it returns 'failed' when I access it from the public endpoint. anyone have an idea?
oh wow. now that I've actually read about meltdown and spectre...what does anything mean anymore
what is real?
someone shared it in the #330944238910963714 channel https://spectreattack.com/
oh no. http://meltdownattack.com was scarier ๐
@last plaza are you familiar with caddy and caddyfiles?
@trail crag no, I do not... is that something new as well?
ah well
@feral blaze 100%
we run vmware at work - looks like for the same problem https://www.vmware.com/security/advisories/VMSA-2018-0002.html

To any of the VMWare guys here, If my ESXi host is on ESXi-6.5.0-20171204001-standard then I should be "safe" from the various CPU bugs, right?
ESXi-6.5.0-20171204001-standard being the version after the one where they fixed, I'm pretty sure that's a yes?
@toxic violet If you have update manager, you can just look at the patches installed. You need to make sure the 6.5 patch is on there.
No worries. I can't tell how the patches are named. It looks like you have 12/04 and the patch you need is 12/10.
Bleh, I konw that I need to do it, but cba to restart everything right now. Also just realized that I will need to update family stuff, meh...
Being the only one who "knows computers" in the whole familiy can really be a curse
Fedora had a nice write up on the fix https://fedoramagazine.org/kpti-new-kernel-feature-mitigate-meltdown/
Meltdown and Spectre present 3 different ways of attacking data protection measures on CPUs enabling attackers to read data they shouldn't be able to. Unfort...
Meh. Not the first time the have been claims the sky is falling
Looks like AMD chips are not afected.
They are to some of it, as are all others since about 1995
i believe AMD and most ARM processors are impacted by spectre while Meltdown is intel only
pretty much any chip made in the past 10 years is more than likely susceptible to either of these attacks....its ok though they will patch just to find another horrible 10 year old bug that is even worse...seems to be the case since the CIA tools leak happened
spectre is funny...following best security practices makes you more vulnerable. uhhhhmm...ok
anyone uses telstick here?
I have Bose Lifestyle speakers, currently they only work with Bose receiver... any ideas on hooking them up to other receivers like Yamaha, Onkyo, DENON?
trade in the bose...... no highs no lows must be bose
i like my bose noise canceling, because noise canceling, and my bose travel speakers because small, other than that, bose is meh
I liked bose long time ago, but not anymore... I spent may be 3grand on those 15 years back...
Now the 901 and 701 and 6.2 from the 80's where awesome
the speakers are great, subwoofer is a bit bulky, but I heard the speakers are not compatible with other receivers, as the bose receiver does the cross-over that other receivers can't
no way
@last plaza yamaha aventage
that works with bose speakers? @tidal bronze
my onkyo can set crossovers for each channell
yeah, my denon can as well
You will destroy the Sabre using bose speakers but yes will work
@last plaza sell the bose, buy new speakers ๐
it's bose, you'll find someone to buy them
I don't get much if I sell them now @feral blaze
You will be fine
its like lifestyle 2500 series or something.. 17 years old - works great though
There's no limit to where you can go with these things
Lifestyle Series 12 http://www.myboserepair.com/lifestyle pages/LS 12.htm
I run 1 x rx-a3070 and a rx-a1000
You will be happy with both denon and yamaha Hass components
@tidal bronze I think you smoking somthing Onkyo is much better
denon works, but ha mediaplayer functionality is a bit limited in general
I have onkyo and love it
from a remote point of view, anyway
Remote point yamaha all the way
if you are going to be upgrading your home theater definitely look into a Dolby Atmos setup ๐
also, marantz = denon, now
highly recommend it for any audiophile
The lower end onkyo's are meh.... but the top end Rz and Integra are the shit
Whatever you can't do with component you can do with the python
so most new marantz AVRs will work with the denon component
@shy comet already run 11.2
@shy comet i might, JUST because my X2000 doesn't do HDR :/
๐
Marantz used to be fanatasic... but havent they went downhill
@dull chasm have you used an aventage?
no
Lol
currently i have 5.1.2
11 plus 2 subs
@feral blaze dolby atmos with hdr is where its at
i'm on 5.0, but the fronts have MORE than enough bass anyway
we just rewatched harry potter in 4k....looked so good!
sound was amazing too as it was DTS:X
yeah, i don't care about 4k as much, but HDR is the shizzle
a LOT of 4k content isn't HDR
Hdr is just color space
of course, you can't find a lot of HDR content in 1080p...
but i'd take 1080p HDR over 4k SDR
4k SDR is not real 4k to me
Try graded 8k on 4k TV now that's mind numbing
you cant have 4k without the HDR
most 4k content atm isn't actually HDR, so you can
most streaming content isnt
but look at all the UHD's
every movie has HDR
only some documentaries don't
on netflix, HDR content is limited
hdr on netflix is screwy
anyway
@last plaza if you want yamaha at dealer price let me know
I just got a DENON last summer.. no more new receivers - hopefully
which one?
let me check...
my X2000 is great, except it not doing anything beyond 4k30hz
I love how we are talking about new receivers wehn HDMI 2.1 receivers are about to hit the market
man, i just wish for AVR's without amps
@feral blaze I have Denon AVRโX4300H
so you can upgrade them separate
Samsung had a unique idea to try to combat it with their special hub that attaches to their TV's but people don't get it that tech doesn't work that way lol
upgrading HDMI 2.0 to HDMI2.1 does you no good if your display can't handle dynamic HDR or higher framerates
in the end, HDMI and especially HDCP is a MESS
a reciever would benefit more from that
all of it is
ARC is a mess too
I hope they fix it with eARC
ARC is such a screwy implementation
I am testing a 100% arc HD Base T right now. Looks promising
they shouldve ahve allowed manufacturers to do their own thing with it and HDMI cec
shouldve forced a standard
I still have the old ONKYO receiver... the HDMI audio doesnt work for some reason... video comes out ok
Do return on optical
@last plaza wow so teh HDMI port burned out?
@tidal bronze my optical cable is my backup cable LOL....I rely on ARC for my TV's builtin CC but sometimes it doesnt work so I had to create an automation script that sets teh receiver accordingly once its on
ARC is nice since it lets your receiver switcch between sources when it needs to....just only works like 60% of the time lol
The arc is a tricky thing. My closet it about 150 ft from the media room
@shy comet possibly... it had a bug that if you have the HDMI connected, and you do a firmware upgrade, it burns the HDMI card out...and it did
sounds like a warranty case
I had to replace HDMI ports on it by shipping it to the nearest dealer location, they took a month to replace the HDMI ports, but never the same
holy crap!!
@last plaza so what's your ultimate goal?
yea onkyos have been known to be troublesome with HDMI....i must be lucky with my TX-NR646
I think my ARC issue is more related to my Sony TV than the receiver
no, arc just sucks ๐
it sucks with my samsung, it sucks with my buddies panasonic, it sucks with my dads philips...
i only get 2.0 out of ARC from almost anything
my ultimate goal would be to connect my Bose speakers to the DENON receiver... ๐ @tidal bronze
i mean, it works.. just only stereo
@last plaza so you should be all set
@tidal bronze yup I have....my issue is that ARC sometimes works and I can tell when I power on my TV/Receiver....sometimes it will tell me that it found my receiver and other times it didnt
it feels more like a handshake issue than anything
@tidal bronze how?
You have powered speakers?
Sorry I am not a bose person but anything is possible
Give me the model numbers
Use your zone 2 out
Assign the output you want to zone 2
the bose speakers are not powered speakers
yes - they are cube speakers...
So you have auxiliary in?
the speakers don't have aux-in..
How are you driving them now?
the speakers are just small cube speakers with two wires sticking out... black and red
they are powered via Bose receiver...
The subwoofer is also bose, it is powered too
So bose receiver has aux in
yes, bose receiver has aux-in.... yes!
I can't change bose receiver mode using HA
bose is not integrated with MY HA... bose doesn't support harmony hub - they are very proprietary
I tried connecting speakers directly to the ONKY receiver, it wouldn't work... they need the Bose Receiver to send amplified audio to them... all the chanel crossover happens in the Bose receiver, and sent to subwoofer, and speakers are connected to subwoofer...
weird design from Bose.... they don't use open protocols
Well you can change speaker setup but your sub will not work since your AVR is not driving the sub
Best is to use the bose unit and get aux in
Leave all intact
You can get a refurbished harmony for nuts on ebay
or get a neeo
I can connect a Raspberry Pi to Bose aux in, and I should be able to play the music ๐ @tidal bronze
I will try that this weekend... already got a huge list of things to do... we need a day between Saturday and Sunday ๐
Yes you can do pi with a dac
whats the DAC for in this case?
Regular audio output on the Raspberry Pi is really bad you can get a hifiberry DAC
They sell clones on eBay for half the price as well
I am not an audiophile... I don't think I will be able to tell the difference ๐
Of course you will it's night and day
let me try this weekend
@feral blaze what soundcard drivers do you use for your RPi?
audio drivers
i don't
Fire up Pi music box
i don't like pi's much, myself, especially for audio
I use Pulse Audio - they are good..
All the drivers you want are built in
I use my DENON and Bose for most of my audio at home, sometimes I play using RPi whole house snapcast system, they work great too
uhu
You should really try it DAC with one of your raspberry pies
is there a link for the DAC?
i got a sonos atm to play with
it's not the best audio, but it isn't for any place i really care about the quality, either
Driving right now I will send you a link soon
ok... cool!
oh, cool... thank you! @tidal bronze

I've tested 4 together before and actually lost a decent overhead combining the four on a basic multi-threaded test app, this was quite a while ago though
lol
yeah no kidding
10 rpi's, chargers, cables, 2 8-port switches.... I assume he spent upwards of $600+ on that setup
I could buy another R710 and run it for at least 6+ months for under the cost of that and still have 100x the computing power, when I see those I always laugh as they're honestly terrible compared to other things, they just look cooler imo, that's about it
i actually just watched his follow up video, he talked about how having 10 rpi's is helpful because he does software dev and can have a bunch of linux environments and test them out. So for his use case that's something I suppose
suppose it can be better than virtualized environments in some scenarios
Eh, It's all about space too, I have a whole extra room, some people are in college and barely have a desk so something like that would be perfect I'd assume
and noisy... R710's will make you go crazy
yeah, I mentioned in my Slack work it's basically bragging rights ๐
"I have a server farm at home, and it fits in a shoebox"
Yeah literally why I did mine
It's all bragging rights to people who aren't very familair they think it's a super computer box sized ๐
Hi, what's the cheapest & decent chromecast speaker ? (~50-60$) I was thinking about a rpi combined to a bluetooth speaker. Is there a better solution ?
do you already have a rpi?
@Kalen Yes, I have 2 unused. But after some research it seems that using a pi as a chromecast audio is not the best idea. I want to cast music with my smartphone and integrate it to HA
For plug and play, a chrome audio and any speakers, most apps already support the chromes, and they're actually not bad on audio quality
Thanks, I am going to search for a chromecast audio then
@trim cliff that's .60.1 not .61 ๐ญ
yeah whats that about ?
is there a good discord chat for raspberry pi/dietpi talk?
I need to get better at git

@clever mortar back to the fruit: cashews are a seed that grow on the outside of the cashew apple which are a categorized as a "false fruit" or "pseudocarp"
๐
@trail crag and apparently their shells are poisonous which is why you never find them shell on
@last cradle no, the shells are not poisonous but they can cause skin irritation
Theย shellย of the cashew nut contains oil compounds which may causeย contact dermatitisย similar in severity to that of poison ivy
that's it?? just irritation?? good lord. another case of the American government protecting us from our own stupidity, much like Kinder Eggs and Lawn Darts
@last cradle well, its more to do with shops not wanting to be sued for someone hands inflating like a balloon
Its also easier to sell them in nut form
if the government would just allow "survival of the fittest" to just run it's natural course, we would be much better off, but then there would be no one left willing to vote for either dominant party
@last cradle nah, it has nothing to do with the government, its all in risk reduction and shelf space
lol
You wouldn't want someone sueing you over a nut
They also need to roast them to get rid if the irritat
I feel smarter now.
Men get sued for child support everyday, all because of a nut. Well 2, but same thing
And you are correct. I do not want get sued over any kind of nut

@last cradle I had kinda gone to sleep after that link about the cahew nuts
I get super triggered when people don't turn on their tail lights while driving in the dark.
Thank goodness for DRLs becoming mandatory in Europe
Actually seen a few cheap cars that solved the DRL requirement by just having the lights come on all round when the engine was running
@midnight adder do you mean fog lights, https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/8/80/RearFogLightMercedes.png the bright one. the rear lights on my car always come one when the frount ones are on
Rear fogs shouldn't ever come on automatically, ever
If they do, your car has faulty electrics ๐คฃ
Yeah, back fogs only come on when the frount fogs come on
Hmm, tail lights are linked to the frount one in the uk and probably the whole EU
But, DRL (daytime running lights) often mean people think they have lights on
Some low quality implementations seem to light the dash as well as the DRLs, so there's less visible clue that the lights aren't really on
@clever mortar hmm, why dont they do what the buses do, IIRC all the first buses have their tail lights on during the day
I'm fine with more lights by default, it makes things easier to see overall
I just wish people wouldn't slap the brightest bulb they can find in, and then screw up the alignment of it
All the lights
I want to get my dad to put some osrams leds in the car the next time the bulb goes
LEDs and HIDs are great
My current car has HIDs and I was amazed at the difference they made over the stock lights in the previous car
Dayum ๐ฎ
Thats bright
Yeah, proper light alignment makes the difference
I've heard of these a lot lately, they look pretty nice
Yeah, I've got a VAG range TDI myself and it's a great car
Previous generation Audi A4 estate, but it doesn't drive like a 10 year old car
None actually
My first car, I have photos of, but each time less and less photos
Ouch
Nope, I've had this from a couple of years old, and touch wood nothing major has needed doing
Yeah. I did some work on my first car, but it was all mechanical (and I had no money). These days it's all electronics and I can afford to pay somebody ๐
It's relatively do-able from what I've seen
There's been a few car TV shows that have touched on it, usually showing what others have done, or rebuilding abandoned projects
๐
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DYcZUSwLz-8 - that's the episode I was thinking of

Nah, it was pulse audio

My current laptop does, But i havent installed the nvidia drivers so its all running on the intergrated graphics
@midnight adder just about to mess arround with it
Next we'll convert you to the (other) dark side that is BSD ๐
That has limited nvidia support
Yeah ive had that too
Gnome, atleast on fedroa uses the integrated for most things and there is a menu option to use the dedecated
Ive done that with Discord as it runs so terribly
@midnight adder is it a optimus laptop?
@midnight adder Im just going to look at the flickering
@midnight adder Actualy, there is a good guide here if you decide to go with fedora http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Bumblebee#Installation_.28NVIDIA_Proprietary.29
Actually, if you want it always to use the nvidia GPU it doesnt seem to be that bad
My test is MPV as it is what i used to have the issue with
anyone here run openvpn access server and / or openvpn client on linux?
๐ yes - both
@clever mortar I got my AS set up and I can connect successfully with my android phone, but on linux after it connects, I can't hit anything - external sites or internal services
any thoughts?
For internal sites, it's normally that your VPN server isn't the default gateway, and other systems don't know how to reach the IP range you're using
It could be the same for the router, not knowing how to route the packets. Check that it's NATing the VPN traffic, or is in bridge mode rather than tunnel mode
Honestly I'm mostly concerned about external access anyway, I just want to be able to route my traffic through my home network
Would that be client-side or server-side?
On Linux too, check that there's new routes pushed and accepted on the client
sudo netstat -rn
My AS server I can't hit right now ('cos it's on the work network, and I'm not at work right now), but the settings will show whether it's bridged or tunnel
settings in the web UI?
Yeah, for AS
You should be able to confirm that by running tcpdump/wireshark on something on the network, and trying to connect over the VPN
hmm
so I just spun up a centos VM and it connects just fine in it
so its gotta be something on my workstation
how do i check the routes
hm, looks like netstat is out of date
I've never been on a box that doesn't have it
arch linux ๐
sudo ip route probably
it doesn't come with anything
Which is a good default, but a PITA for us old timers
I mean, come on, I was using vi before this vim stuff came along (even if only just)
lol
ok
Here are routes before starting openvpn:
default via 172.16.40.1 dev enp0s31f6 src 172.16.40.37 metric 202
default via 192.168.55.1 dev wlp4s0 src 192.168.52.70 metric 303
172.16.40.0/24 dev enp0s31f6 proto kernel scope link src 172.16.40.37 metric 202
172.18.0.0/24 dev docker0 proto kernel scope link src 172.18.0.1
192.168.52.0/22 dev wlp4s0 proto kernel scope link src 192.168.52.70 metric 303
192.168.52.0/22 dev wlp4s0 proto kernel scope link src 192.168.53.30 metric 600
192.168.52.0/22 dev wlp4s0 proto kernel scope link src 192.168.52.70 metric 600
192.168.56.0/24 dev vboxnet0 proto kernel scope link src 192.168.56.101 metric 207
And after:
0.0.0.0/1 via 172.27.232.1 dev tun0
default via 172.16.40.1 dev enp0s31f6 src 172.16.40.37 metric 202
default via 192.168.55.1 dev wlp4s0 src 192.168.52.70 metric 303
128.0.0.0/1 via 172.27.232.1 dev tun0
172.16.40.0/24 dev enp0s31f6 proto kernel scope link src 172.16.40.37 metric 202
172.18.0.0/24 dev docker0 proto kernel scope link src 172.18.0.1
172.27.232.0/23 dev tun0 proto kernel scope link src 172.27.232.21
174.109.39.209 via 172.16.40.1 dev enp0s31f6
192.168.52.0/22 dev wlp4s0 proto kernel scope link src 192.168.52.70 metric 303
192.168.52.0/22 dev wlp4s0 proto kernel scope link src 192.168.53.30 metric 600
192.168.52.0/22 dev wlp4s0 proto kernel scope link src 192.168.52.70 metric 600
192.168.56.0/24 dev vboxnet0 proto kernel scope link src 192.168.56.101 metric 207
So it looks like it's adding them?
well i am running a VM and docker
I wonder if those extra defaults are part of the problem
I've never tried to VPN from a machine running docker and VMs
ok
turned off wifi, vm, and docker:
default via 172.16.40.1 dev enp0s31f6 src 172.16.40.37 metric 202
172.16.40.0/24 dev enp0s31f6 proto kernel scope link src 172.16.40.37 metric 202
172.18.0.0/24 dev docker0 proto kernel scope link src 172.18.0.1 linkdown
Still no. Routes after:
0.0.0.0/1 via 172.27.232.1 dev tun0
default via 172.16.40.1 dev enp0s31f6 src 172.16.40.37 metric 202
128.0.0.0/1 via 172.27.232.1 dev tun0
172.16.40.0/24 dev enp0s31f6 proto kernel scope link src 172.16.40.37 metric 202
172.18.0.0/24 dev docker0 proto kernel scope link src 172.18.0.1 linkdown
172.27.232.0/23 dev tun0 proto kernel scope link src 172.27.232.22
174.109.39.209 via 172.16.40.1 dev enp0s31f6
0.0.0.0/1 via 172.27.232.1 dev tun0
128.0.0.0/1 via 172.27.232.1 dev tun0
wait, why is that docker one still there
Those 2 are the ones I'd expect
That should over-ride the default routes, becuase they're more specific
hmm
So, tcpdump time again I think
On that machine to see if the packets are going out over tun0
And on the far end to see if they're arriving with the expected IP address
i'm not seeing anything client-side in tcpdump
The likely possibilities are:
- The packets never go out on the VPN
- They go out, but they're arriving with the 172.27.232.x address
- You've got 172.27.232.x addresses elsewhere in the route
You'll need to do tcpdump -i tun0 - is that what you did?
ah, no
Sorry, I spend too much time with it, forget to tell people the important stuff
What does ip addr show provide for tun0?
No worries, I'm just sanity checking stuff
If you can't ping the gateway (172.27.232.1) then something is badly broken
Or, possibly, client isolation is turned on
I've not currently got access to one with that enabled
would that be enabled server-side?
again, if it helps determine anything, the OpenVPN connect app on my android works just fine
Yeah, it is
and it worked in my centos VM
not installed
I wonder if I'm missing something - AS wouldn't work until I enabled iptables as a service
which it wasn't by default with arch
(i did enable it client-side as well just in case)
so I wonder if i'm missing something running client side or something....
Client side should be pretty lightweight
I mean, I've got a Pi3 that I just installed the client on, pointed it at the config, and done
There shouldn't be any more required
Don't see any obvious issues
No worries. I'll have another look through tomorrow when I'm more awake, just in case I'm missing anything
cool, i appreciate it!
Does anyone rember when firefox was going to add the custom element support
that will make the HASS frount end more useable
anyone have any suggestions for a good Docker print server?
So I have a few network printers and based on IP, it's always a pain in the ass setting up all the laptops in the house to print to them. so I was hoping for a network print server that I can point all the laptops too which can spool and then print to the printers.
Might be more work than it's worth but I'm looking for more dockers to use. ๐
CUPS seems perfect actually.
CUPS tends to be installed by defult, i dont know how well it works in docker
ok.. next question : anyone running unifi docker image? I'm looking to see someone's compose file.

will they run the poop over? ๐ค
~Cheaper in the UK~ nope its not
lol
@mossy surge that was cad $ in the description I think

Its a lot cheaper, there with the offer
Well, atleast dyson don't do a apple with the same pricing internationally
I thought it was the British pound symbol my bad
No. That was the British pound symbol
Or or are you talking about not that pic you posted?
I just googled it and saw it was 1000$
@trim cliff I can share mine tonight
Random question - what's the best desktop computer to buy for kids? thinking buy vs build
@clever mortar I finally got OpenVPN to work!
apparently dhcpcd was messing with the network config - I disabled it, rebooted and now it's all working fine.
@midnight adder wasn't that the one with kernel issues?
or did they fix it? ๐
If it's downloaded form their site, you should be good. They pulled it at one point, if they put it back up I'm sure its fine now
sorry, not kernel issues - BIOS issues
I was thinking along the lines of @midnight adder - get a basic one, and put an SSD in there... they already have laptops, but wanted something in their work space permanently ON, where they can print and playaround
@clever mortar I didn't have good luck with NUC when I got it last time, and returned it, and haven't had a chance to get a new one yet... if I am going to spend a grand, I might as well get a NAS
I bought a fairly cheap Intel one, but ๐คท
when I compare build vs buy it is cheaper to just buy basic one than building it
@serene mortar I do... I am liking my NAS so much, I want to expand it... everything I can run on my desktop I can run in docker on my NAS these days...
I am in love with my QNAP - they are doing amazing, great support and apps for the NAS
NAS is under-powered for, especially for Plex. I moved my Plex container to NUC
So I have a question: I have a home server I've been using for about a year now. Decent hardware for what it is. But I'm getting into home Nas with snapRAID and would like to put all my hard drives into one case. Any recommendations on cases? Preferably rack mountable but not required.
that was my thinking - if you are running docker on NUC, why not just run the same docker on NAS instead of spending $1300... is my thinking ๐ค
the new NAS has more power...
@last plaza It gets very slow once you start using image processing/camera capabilities
yeah....
SO you are running HA on your NAS now?
I stoppd using plex completely - I use twonky now... I am very happy with it... I don't expose my media outside my network anyway, twonky is lightweight, and no licensing issues
My HA is still running on my old ubuntu... I did install it on my NAS but it is stopped now

BTW...Intel is introducing 'Hades Canyon' NUC, update to Skull Canyon
I wish we have smaller racks available - where we can put small pizza box size servers in that rack
Hades Canyon? will look into it
@midnight adder that is neat!!!
that's good... that's where I check for the rack server deals too
@midnight adder so what would you suggest for someone who already has a rack and server but needs an enclosure for the HDDs?
@fading ice There are tons of server chassis on Amazon that can hold many HDDs.
would that be the best option? wasn't sure if an external enclosure for many harddrives was preferable in some cases
stop sitting on it
@median gust From the docs: "Controlling the Spotify component (pause, play, next, etc) requires a Premium account."
But if you can controll the media player, there is an posibility, but not with the component
@midnight adder I got my Optimus laptop to kind of work
I got 2 old servers - which CPU would you guy go for? http://cpuboss.com/cpus/Intel-Xeon-E5-1603-vs-Intel-Core-i7-920
@clever mortar Good call on this channel, btw. ๐
Thanks
Encryption FTW
(right up until you're doing an investigation, and discover that some muppet lost the decrypt keys...)
I've been both sides (for corporates). Encryption is great for ensuring that you don't lose data, but when some idiot member of staff may have broken the law, and the decrypt key doesn't work.... it's not fun times
Still, all my personal devices get encryption - because I'd rather have to recover from backups than lose data ๐
Yup
There I use the "new" file based option so it can reboot (and function as an alarm etc)
Clearly you just look dubious
