you should not be doing this.

TÜV approved

little steeple
#

Is this a GPT?

unborn merlin
#

no, I just know more than you do and wouldnt be asking these questions at all.

blazing parcel
#

well here is the question, do you have the proper tools and safety protections? do you have a current detector, multimeter and protected tools?

unborn merlin
#

😉

#

the fact that you can't even answer whether a junction box you want to tap is hot or not

little steeple
#

What

unborn merlin
#

means you lack the knowledge at a fundamental level to be touching mains.

little steeple
#

Thats not what I said

hoary canyon
#

do the landlord special and just shove some caulk there smart (/s)

unborn merlin
#

what you just said?

little steeple
#

Well lemme grab a multimeter and find out

blazing parcel
little steeple
#

Thats not what Im asking you guys

unborn merlin
#

and yet; it feeds back into the question you did ask.

#

and is that junction GFCI protected? again; sort of important questions.

little steeple
unborn merlin
#

you don't know if its live or not

#

and you're already making presumptions of safety?

little steeple
#

Because I havent grabbed a multimeter yet?

unborn merlin
#

hint: a question that should've already been answered/never asked to begin with when dealing with mains electricity especially in a wet location.

little steeple
#

Okay nevermind then

#

Im not getting into Linux forum discussions

blazing parcel
#

just be safe

little steeple
#

I just didnt do it in the bathroom yet

unborn merlin
#

Its not a linux forum discussion its a

"This is why there are laws around people who don't know what they're doing touching mains."

#

... uhhuh.

little steeple
#

And well, Idk if cable channel will stick in wet rooms

unborn merlin
#

thats why you're not sure if the junctions good or not..

blazing parcel
little steeple
unborn merlin
#

and you're the reason we have comically strict laws around these things. 🙃

little steeple
iron granite
#

And now we all calm down a bit.

blazing parcel
#

also one thing to keep in mind is wherever you expose those wires when you are done go through and heavily scritinize the work and make sure EVERYTHING IS SEALED. just dont want any arcing. when done just do a bunch of passes with your multimeter for continuity around the spots that might be the weakest

#

i knows its obvious, but i saying it juist to make sure it was said. make sure to not let the wires go into the natrual path of the water in any drainage situation

unborn merlin
#

asking very basic and obvious electrical questions.

no actually the real problem is sticking things to tiles!

little steeple
#

And junction box is like a few cm to the side of it

#

Im more worried about moisture or freak accident where shower head explodes, idk

blazing parcel
little steeple
#

If I touch a live wire it's not fault of the HASS discord, no? 😄

#

Stop feeling accountable for me ffs

iron granite
#

If the belt winder is not sufficiently IP rated, the cabling has some wesk spot and that area gets wet, accidents can happen.
Best case a short, worst case injuries or death.

This is the first and only time I have ever gone on a landlords side.

iron granite

And condensation as well.

little steeple
#

Im sure it downconverts it internally

dusty mica
#

yes internally in your shower..

little steeple
#

Well this is the belt winder in question

#

I didnt find any schematics but Im preettty sure it will have a 5V rail for the smarts

dusty mica

noticed, it sits next to the cracked tile

little steeple
#

Cracked tile is obligatory ok, it makes it go faster

blazing parcel

There is nothing more infuriating than a program with a memory leak...

unborn merlin

anyone else wants to bet that.. its not rated for a shower at all?

little steeple

Oooh wait a second

unborn merlin

because my bet is that if it was rated for wet locations it would be DC/battery

dusty mica

I mean you wanna know something really funny

omg

unborn merlin

i'm sure the landlord definitely won't notice the unrated device ontop of the cracked tile thats going to be hilariously expensive when that lease is broken eventually

dusty mica

smarthome fan electrocuted while taking shower

little steeple

unborn merlin

Did thing anyways.

dusty mica
#

yeah..

little steeple
#

But yeah Im not a fan of no PE

dusty mica
#

gonna take a shower now.

little steeple
#

How tf did previous owner seal up the fan I wonder

unborn merlin
#

Hint: bathroom fans are rated for being in the bathroom

iron granite
#

IP20, no PE, close to running water,...

little steeple
little steeple
#

Bcuz you can see here

unborn merlin
#

how did the previous owner buy a device that is usually installed in bathrooms!?

little steeple
#

Fan is running off 230VAC

little steeple
#

Im guessing the junction box is for the fan most likely

dusty mica
#

guessing always is a good thing to do when altering live wires

little steeple
#

Nah you dont guess

dusty mica
#

make finger wet before you feel

little steeple
#

You short it out to find which circuit breaker its connected to

little steeple
iron granite
unborn merlin
#

if only we knew how products rated to be ventilation fans for bathrooms were rated for their uses.

little steeple
#

So, do I replace the internal downconverter with something that takes in DC directly?

#

Cuz fuck 230VAC running in the shower obv, but well, what are the alternatives

unborn merlin
#

going back in time and smacking oneself really hard for not listening to the IP rating of the device prior to cracking the tile?

iron granite
#

Using the right tools for the right places.

little steeple
#

I dont think there are electric, let alone smart, belt winders that are rated IP4X or IP5X even

iron granite
#

Then you cannot use an electric belt winder there. Or need an alternative like a motor for the roller shutters.

#

Which replaces the belt mechanism.

little steeple
#

That one would be a pain up the ass too, but I guess an option

#

Nah cuz Im thinking tiny motor inside the belt winder is prob DC

unborn merlin
little steeple
#

If I fry the device, but theres only like idk, 24VDC coming into there, nothing "bad" will happen

static schooner
#

Automation isn't always the answer. My garbage disposal in the sink is the only manual switch in my house for a reason

little steeple
#

So it might be cheaper to replace the PSU inside the belt winder

unborn merlin
#

I have never seen such a sunk cost fallacy in progress.

this is hilarious.

weak musk

dusty mica
#

1

dusty mica
#

gemini seems to know...:

Technically, you only need one—provided it's the right kind of "rack."

If we are talking about the word itself, you just need to add two letters ("o" and "o") to the end of one rack. However, if you are looking for a more "punny" breakdown of how many racks it takes to build a raccoon, here is the math:

The Raccoon Composition
1 Rack: For the base infrastructure.

  • 2 "O"s: These represent the dark circles around the eyes (the mask).

= 1 Raccoon.

On a more serious note, if you are asking because you’re worried about your server room attracting actual wildlife, standard data center best practices usually recommend keeping the number of raccoons at exactly zero. They are notorious for cable management "adjustments" that usually involve their teeth.

Are you planning to expand your current setup, or just looking for an excuse to get a trash panda mascot for the lab?

Goodness me what’s going on with 2026.4.x. I’m having to reboot several times a day to fix runaway memory leaks. There’s no rhyme or reason to what’s causing them.

Ok.

unborn merlin
#

gotta love the tariff fuckery.
tfw its cheaper to just sendcutsend it.. 🙃 probably..

umbral cliff
unborn merlin
#

they're also not offering anything else except DHL. 🙃

#

gotta clamp them cells..

last cedar
#

Last time UPS came they propped the delivery against my door so it all fell over when I opened it

#

Fucking wankers

#

And last time Schenker came with a pallet they just dumped it in the middle of my drive, 150kg of batteries

last cedar
unborn merlin
last cedar
#

But I think I know which one you specifically are thinking of 🤣

last cedar
#

My latest "first world problem" I have a pallet of 36 solar panels stuck 30km away and they want to arrange delivery

#

And I will probably have to take time off work to accept it

#

But I have paid 200 euro delivery (from futher than 30km in total)

#

So I pay 2 days wages to deliever it, but must be in when they can be bothered to come by with it

#

Not, omg you paid a lot of money to get this to you, when would work for you

unborn merlin
#

gon get the 4x plates probably.. next month to do the battery sammich

last cedar
#

I might be entitled, I don't know, but you can't just come by with a 2 meter by 1.2 meter pallet that weighs over a ton without somw flexibility IMO

unborn merlin
#

then my DC-UPS should be done..

#

or.. I could just..

last cedar
#

DC UPS? Tell me more

unborn merlin
#

.. use 3d prints instead

#

using DC UPS instead of regular UPS to skip the AC Double conversion shit

last cedar
#

Details!

unborn merlin
#

24VDC UPS, DC-ATX supply for my new server.. and etc

last cedar
#

Aha!

#

I have been wondering how to approach this when I get my solar setup actually

#

I was thinking if running a seperate inverter off the 48V bus to the server rack

unborn merlin
#

well I got one of these for my small server..

last cedar
#

Say a pheonix victron model, but it wouldn't be fantastically efficient

unborn merlin
#

i'm aiming to have as few power bricks as possible

#

gonna just have a big 20a 24v rail to tap stuff off

last cedar
#

This makes a lot of sense

unborn merlin
#

then buck converters to step down most things

#

... still working on powering my unifi fiber gateway tho off it

#

will need a boost converter for that.. and its a weird voltage

last cedar
#

I have a proper atx machine and some elitedesks and such

#

Are you going with all dc powered stuff with bricks and then deleting the bricks?

#

I was thinking of piping 48V to the rack and then running it off that, locally, some stuff will run on 19, some needs 48, some needs AC at the moment

unborn merlin
#

no i'm using some phoenix contact industrial stuff

last cedar
#

I am looking forward to some pictures when it is all done 😄

#

I believe supermicro has a 48V DC PSU for my 846 box, but I bet I couldn't afford one lol

unborn merlin
#

different picture doing a preliminary fit

#

the bigger brick in green and silver is the PSU and the smaller is the DC UPS

#

because industry stuff.. is small when its just DC 😛

#

that was doing different stacks tho.. now they're mostly wrapped up into stacks of 6 with kapton and etc

#

for now tho I pass the fuck out.. then think more tomororw.. leaning towards just maybe 3d printing with some metal rods or alu channel pressed into things to provide more rigidity... I don't intend to be running these that hard anyways

#

considering my UPS is only rated for 20a output..

#

and I am running.. 8S6P..

#

... yeah I don't think these cells are gonna be trying very hard

#

I probably could've gotten nicer if I could handle stud welding (too expensive) or laser welding (also too expensive) to access other batteries..

last cedar
#

Very interesting project

#

The cells do need some compression though right, to stop swelling?

unborn merlin
#

so I've heard from research

#

a few are already marginally puffed, but its more or less fine I think they've reshaped slightly after I compressed them and then wrapped em with tape.. 🤣

#

I could also.. probably.. just.. do two plates?

unborn merlin
#

make 3d prints on the bottom for spacing and use the bottom of this stupid metal case as the plate for the other side

#

since I can install rivnuts into either.

last cedar
#

Should be fine

unborn merlin
#

its LFP not Lion so yeah 😛

last cedar
#

I have seen people use wood for it

#

Lion should only be messed with at someone elses house 🤣

unborn merlin
#

#

had to help someone get off a fire hazard phone

last cedar
#

At someone elses house

unborn merlin
#

it had to be plugged in while I worked on it

#

got to like 15-20% battery

#

after finished I took it out into the driveway and stabbed it to let the angry lithium out so it could be safely trashed.

last cedar
#

Spicy pillows

unborn merlin
#

for now tho. sleep.

#

maybe one day I'll be nuts with these.. 🤣

#

Fully charged - 3.65v
Fully Discharged - 2.5v
Max Continuous Charge - Up to 120a
Max Pulse Discharge - 400a
Short Circuit Protection - 5400a

#

but seeing as I wanted more density.. 20ah cells for 5$/ea on tax return I got 48x of em. xD

last cedar
#

"Note: you will have to wrap these cells with shrink wrap or many people use the green barley paper for insulation. The cells are naked and the outer shell of the battery is all negative so you cannot put these in series touching each other. You need some sort of insulation between the cells to ensure they do not touch."

#

LOL

#

Doesn't sound at all dangerous haha

unborn merlin
#

so at..

#

500w of load (lets be sane here I would be turning stuff off and going low power)

#

my pack will last.. about 5.47hrs

last cedar
#

Info like that is why I got an off the shelf known good battery 😄

unborn merlin

This is an insane deal! Just $33/kWh with an outdoor enclosure. These batteries come with a full metal enclosure which measures 30" tall, 56" wide, and 28" deep. They are made with 189x CATL 3.2v 173ah Lifepo4 cells. These can be painted on, but most are either green or blue.  These will ship on a pallet and the weight

🤣

(They're from some hilariously failed EV-truck startup.)

Someone's losing their job, and probably their entire career... Just up the road from me an Amtrak passenger train clipped the back of a flatbed (not a semi truck, just a short flatbed truck) Totally preventable. Too many people still expect a slow freight train at this crossing, since for 20 years there hasn't been an Amtrak running through here, until about 7 or months ago.

Amtrak hits that crossing at 72mph. Freight trains are maybe going 40mph

This little area near me is particularly crazy because there's a traffic light just to the right of the tracks and a couple of cars can fit after the gate arm and before the light. You have to decide well ahead whether you can fit or not, and you can't back up if you don't 🙂

#

It's a busy intersection with a lot of traffic. Fortunately, they seem to time the traffic light with the train and it lets the intersection empty before the gate arms come down

#

But sometimes people end up stopped on the tracks with nowhere to go

scenic radish
#

This just looks like hell in general lol

Indeed. There are also four different lanes you can be in and you need to be in the correct one to prepare for quick turns right after the intersection. I hate driving through there

that sounds like one of the idler things that rides in the rail is no longer running properly square.

what happens when bearings aren't replaced in a timely manner.

Like what you don't just have it keep building like how its meant to
Then get forced to take a holiday if you build up too much

peak slate
#

PTO builds up for a set amount and afterwards is dropped, sometimes they'll drop on year end of you haven't used it, sometimes it's just a set amount that it's not allowed to accumulate over

#

But yeah like everyone said, why aren't you taking vacations
