crazy fast and efficient

#

But if you ask it to 'i'd like to listen to 'no soy de aqui no soy de alla de facundo cabra'' it goes to hell πŸ˜…

#

As soon as two languages are used in the sentence it goes off, which is terrible for my musical tastes πŸ˜›

dawn badge
#

I am in the UK so it doesnt ever hear anything except english... Unless I am messing with it whilst speaking other languages... Very badly...

thorny heron
#

Fair πŸ˜› For that use it's very decent! And took for me less than 1.5gb of vram i believe

#

I listen to music in my three languages, so yeah, it got scrapped in like 2 days πŸ˜…

dawn badge
thorny heron
#

I was not aware of that.

dawn badge
thorny heron
#

I guess it used a smaller quant/param count than the Whisper i've setup.

#

Cause it was not as accurate

dawn badge

The latest version of parakeet (v3) is multilingual but this is not (at least currently) using it.

thorny heron
#

Michael... don't make me start a sunday project πŸ˜›

dawn badge
#

You might be able to select the v3 model in the config but it doesn't use it by default anyway πŸ˜›

I already had to massively update 10 of my ESP32S3 BOXES config file for ESPHOMe 3 days ago. I need to rest lmao

Hehe. Craft-agents with Codex took care of most of it

#

I also added VAD at the same time, turns out i was not using it

#

i also had to switch to LVGL... 🀣 It was doing this otherwise with the new display mode

unborn merlin

ah yes.

Slop generated slop

Uh...

I'mma disengeage from this weird path the discussion is going forward πŸ™‚

(ai techbros have a similar problem with the answer of "no")

Okay...

Are you insinuating that I have issues with the concept of consent?

unborn merlin

nope but perfectly happy to use the slop built off it. πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

Okay. Yeah, have a good one!

Btw, your phone was made by some person who is economically coherced into working in a factory ❀️

thorny heron
warm helm
#

I got into it with someone that was upset that a social media person was using AI for subtitles "taking the job" of them because they wrote subtitles for work. Like yes that sucks that AI is going to take all subtitle writers jobs but also this is a case where that social media person was never ever going to hire someone to write the subtitles. The net benefit of more subtitles is a good thing for those hard of hearing vs being left out even if a few people do lose their jobs to AI.

thorny heron
#

Ideally we would have UBI if we are to stay under capitalism. but that's a different topic.

We can't stop the progress cause some folks might lose their jobs.

I'm very sad for gaslamps engineers, but electricity was the way to go

warm helm
#

There are good arguments for being Anti-AI like most of these companies firing their entire staffs for "AI" is cover for wallstreet. They over hired as the economy contracts because of bad policy and they are saying they can down size to inflate their stock price when it really should be falling. The power and environment impacts. The fact that jr devs are not going to gain experience to become better and the vibe coded nonsense will leave giant security holes that no one will have the knowledge to properly fix them.

but blanket hate is a little silly.

thorny heron
#

That's not being Anti-AI tho... That's being anti capitalism.

unborn merlin
#

definitely! /s

thorny heron
#

AI is only 'bad' when it takes jobs. Eliminate the concept of jobs and AI is suddenly good

unborn merlin

to fire the poors.

#

and make infinite money.

thorny heron
#

Well, nationalize it.

unborn merlin

that is literally the point

unborn merlin

oh yes..t ech that just makes shit up constantly

#

there's the poor arguments again.

thorny heron

Comrade, you went the 'rape' route. So don't talk about falacious arguments

unborn merlin

I'm just not a sockpuppet for the rich mostly I guess.

I'm just using stable diffusion to make a character for my box and i'm being called a 'slop peddler who can't take no for an answer'

Same for your computer, phone, food, clothing then

unborn merlin

ah yes, the fox news arguments; the favorite of the slop peddlers.

its weird how the facist admin really loves the slop generators too.

thorny heron

There is no ethical consumption under capitalism.
So unless you live in the woods, you do not have a moral high ground

And now i'm being called as fascists?

dawn badge

Why the fuck a gas furnace needs connection to the manufacturer?

They can see that I dont use the gas burner because using a space heater is literally cheaper

ocean oar
#

I rolled the dice on Mitsubishi's built-in WiFi. Their cloud service is hilariously shit (the heat pump only checks in once per minute, so that's as often as it would allow mode/temperature changes), but it has a completely insecure (zero authentication) local control protocol called "EchoNet Lite" (apparently big in Japan?) which works a treat.
IoT subnet is nice and isolated anyway, so I just use that.

unborn merlin

Nope?

they're much newer.. I prefer to get stuff from battery hookup since they're like

they ship something? I get it literally next day due to them being a state away from me

Would all have to be Alibaba sourced mmmm

unborn merlin

nor will there ever be anytime soon*

πŸ˜›

and if there is.

it'll be 10x the price

little steeple

Idk Id wanna see Na-ion work out

#

It's promising

#

No need for mining Lithium is a big environment plus

#

Also we don't fucking have Lithium in Europe, which is why Germany underwent this huge deal with Chile for their lithium mines

unborn merlin
#

I just have a realistic expectation of where the manufacturing will likely occur.

little steeple
#

Oh yeah that'll be outsourced to cheapest possible place

#

Actually well

#

I think it will take place alongside Li-ion manufacturing, so existing factories

unborn merlin
little steeple
#

Entire idea with Na-ion anyhow is for them to be so fucking cheap you dont care about how many you need anymore, and for that to take place is like mmmmm nah thatll take a while

unborn merlin
#

I mean there's batteries.. but for stationary uses there's also what I think china does a lot too which is uhhh..

#

kinetic batteries?

#

spinny death weight buried underground and spun up for siphoning off power as needed and etc

little steeple
#

I mean stationary batteries, the large ones, in the past were always redox acid batteries

Flywheel batteries offer high roundtrip efficiency, typically ranging from 85% to 95%.

#

We can’t stop it the cat id already out of the bag

#

It’s not an if it’s a when and with how fast Claude and other ai models are getting better we are so fucked it’s not even funny

#

The best you can do is embrace and find a way to fit into the new world not resist against something you have zero agency over

#

That’s not to say that specifically vibing is the answer I’m just memeing as far as that goes

#

You can use ai to teach you not just do it for you

atomic delta
#

Honestly, I just don't agree with you. I respect your position, I understand it, but I disagree with it.

hollow glacier
#

I don’t think anything else makes pragmatic sense

#

The people who run this world don’t give a shit about the general population and are showing us that daily

atomic delta
#

To be fair, AI as it affects you and AI as it affects me are two very different things. I'm politically active in a desert where they want to build what can only be described as a metric shitton of datacenters utilizing resources the area simply doesn't have to spare. It's an existential threat here. Whether someone makes a deep fake video of Obama doesn't matter to me so much as the direct cost of increscent greed. But it does give me a bit of a foul taste in my mouth when interacting with the technology, for obvious reasons.

warm helm
hollow glacier
#

I’m obviously not pro ai datacenter buildout and especially not with how they poison the environment. You’re mistaking my realism with me agreeing with ai taking over. My argument is we can’t stop it and need to embrace or become the person that fills in the cracks of society and it won’t be pretty work

atomic delta
#

No, not at all. I'm just saying the hard costs are hurting me first, and it's affecting my view some.

#

I have expertise AI can't replicate though, so I'm not too worried about falling through the cracks.

#

Basically within my own niche I'm the guy they turn to and say "everything else has failed, traditional solutions won't work, we're out of options, what have you got?"

hollow glacier
#

Eventually ai will learn that or they’ll create new tools that don’t need that type of expertise

atomic delta
#

Good luck.

hollow glacier
#

And or your kind will only be needed in very small numbers

atomic delta
#

Oh, that much is very much true. But in my niche, I'm currently the only one.

#

Not saying it's all perfect, not saying I want that to be my solution, but it does mean I'm unlikely to end up "caulking the seams" as it were.

hollow glacier
#

I think we’re right on the precipice of really dark times and people who can use ai to get results will be the last to feel the worst of the pain

atomic delta
#

I do think we're on the edge of dark times. What gets us through, we'll see.

atomic delta
#

Honestly what I'm most concerned about right now isn't AI related. Not directly anyway. It's this fucking idiotic push Meta has done for OS-level age authentication via ID tracking.

hollow glacier
#

I’m saying we’re already walking the plank but ai will allow (some of) us to not fall in (yet)

atomic delta
#

By the way, if you didn't hear, the dark money was traced back to Meta on that. Who'd have guessed.

hollow glacier
#

They’re gonna vote in whatever they want without the general population being okay with it

atomic delta
#

They want to lock down OSes to approved boxes only, then Google floated a proposal for how the Internet can function only supplying data to computers verified as trusted. I take issue with that, to say the least.

#

(please don't ask me to find the source on that, the Google proposal is older and I'm lazy)

hey people! i have a question. i got a spare, 8gb ram, rpi4b lying around and it makes me sad. It used to run HA but then i bought a mini pc and moved it to that.

SO

what cool things could i make, ideally that integrate with HA but not necessarily, with the little beast? I don't really want to have to buy anything else hardware wise, its just the computer + case + power cable that i have (plus sd card but yk) and i think itd be fun to make it do something cool. Any ideas?

-# edit: itd be even better if its something that like needs the pi specifically / a separate computer at least cause otherwise it feels silly having two devices plugged in when i could just do it on the more powerful machine ._.

Huh. Just looked a little into solar and now I'm more intrigued.

#

Mind you, I'm 100% in the "would already have solar if I didn't have to pay so much for it" boat.

But it looks like it's relatively simple to set up a small-scale system and scale up as finances allow, which changes the entire game.

unborn merlin

ah yes, someone vibe coding something that has to do with using a heater.

So basically I pay a bit more per panel, but the micro inverters apparently generally have better longevity than string inverters, so I make that cost up over time, and as a bonus I get per-panel diagnostics and can literally expand one panel at a time.

Would you have any issues with shading (big trees that block a section of the roof at a time, or anything like that?). Apparently another thing microinverters are good for, stops one under-performing panel affecting the entire string

Why would I go for a system I have to set up all at once when I can't justify that cost at this time anyway, only to have to make a larger mess, probably pay an electrician instead of doing it DIY, and lose long-term advantages in the process anyway?

I don't know if that would hold up to earthquake code here.

unborn merlin
#

I mean.. yes?

atomic delta
#

I assumed yes

unborn merlin
#

building DIY packs as long as you have BMS's that speak the inverter's langauge is fairly easy

#

that pack I pulled open recently is to convert a smaller hybrid inverter to replace an old server backlup power supply

#

because it didnt like them

#

so.. mfr makes two different battery lines it seems.. one for individual protected batteries for drop in stuff

#

and other is one that works with the inverter.

#

we already have 4x of this kind.. so I'm just stripping out the batteries and re-wiring them with a compatible BMS from aliexpress.. 🀣

which from what I can tell

#

... is the same BMS that this inverter uses for their "Professional" line that is compatible

#

the panel punchouts on their rack batteries match the bms exactly

Never messed with battery DIY much. It was always the taboo. But in this case it makes sense, and LiFePO4 keeps it relatively safe, compared to the chemistries I was looking at previously.

dawn badge

RAM tech is going through a bit of a thing at the moment. the traditional memory form factor just adds too much latency for what people are demanding of systems.

solar zealot
#

The timing makes no sense for availability being low and people not having that disposable money

#

Because all that old stuff goes into ewaste

dawn badge
#

Memory interface change has just become absolutely necessary. with factories retooling and stuff anyway it probably makes it a good time to make changes.

solar zealot
#

You can't even properly upgrade it to anything because it only has a single slot if I see this right in imagery

#

quite disappointing

dawn badge
#

Yeah, Two slots would have been nice but they take quite a lot of board space and I don't know enough about the specifics of the memory bus to examine the practicality of 2.

solar zealot
#

Currently that leaves people with the choice of buying what they need now for a fairly huge upcharge

#

Or to pay twice later

dawn badge
#

Assuming lpcamm2 becomes the new widespread standard then reselling/reusing old stuff on upgrade is gunna be a thing quick enough.

#

Everything memory related is just going to be expensive for a while. There is not much that can be done.

#

I was hoping for some kind up update on the 12 though. I am considering getting one as my "shit i need to do something not at my desk" machine. Its not super common that I need it but my current laptop i use for this is very much ageing.

So the story goes anyway, it's needing 2 slots that stopped the strix halo platform having lpcamm2. It uses 256-bit RAM and they're 128 each, so 2 is a requirement (where on other platforms one module is covering "2 channels"). But timings/stability intervened, apparently. Guess it was just a bit early in the piece
Clearly it's being worked on though, Nvidia's latest rack-scale AI things are using 8 of them per CPU. I think AMD have something similar in the works.

#

I would note the upcoming thing I'm most excited for is Zen6 Epyc with 16x MR-DIMM @ 12800MT/s. Something like 1.6TB/s of memory bandwidth per socket.

I did get a frostbite plate and I haven't had an issue since. Just need to get one for the X2d

unborn merlin

yeah i murdered one of my plates by being a bit too hasty.

#

using that solution.. and flexing the plate while hot

equals.. the adhesive holding the PEI sheet down giving it up. πŸ’”

tfw the adhesive solution is stronger than the bed adhesion

If you run a CNC, you already know… things can go sideways fast.

I had one of those as a baby raccoon

except that one has ** a little bit more** energy.

static schooner

I guess I like that it's safer than a regular spinning top, but how do you get it going?

#

some sort of electric base that you stick it in to engage with the top part?

woot woot, got chatlog and token streaming working!!!

exotic yoke
#

today_i_will hmm should i configure my already very stressed out raspberry pi to act as a wifi-ethernet bridge for an ip camera i have no idea what to do with

#

cause i am NOT running ethernet all the way to where that is

stuck mortar
exotic yoke
#

funny enough, its cpu is fine, its the wifi/bt/usb stuff that is stressed out, cause its operating LVA and a bluetooth proxy over wifi

stuck mortar

A while back I was behind a car that had the outer tread come off a tire and keep going at 60 mph. Had to balance staying away from the spinny death and the idiot that kept driving on the damn rim for a few miles

scenic radish
#

might as well just use powerline ethernet or if you have a Unifi setup, the Unifi Device Bridge

exotic yoke
#

my mom upgraded her house's cameras, and so i just have 6 of these very nice ip cameras sitting around. cant sell them, hikvision is banned from selling cameras in the US. so i dont even know what to do with them

exotic yoke
exotic yoke
#

powerline ethernet would expose my traffic to every mf in this apartment wheeze

#

well i mean my unit does have its own breaker box but i dont think that isolates it

scenic radish
#

there's usually a way to encrypt the communication between the adapters

exotic yoke
#

there's a damn coax cable right where i would want this ethernet but its just coax and nothing else

scenic radish
#

MoCA adapter

stuck mortar
blazing parcel
#

this is a solved problem because everyone else looked at their houses from the 70s and 80s with coaxial and went.... id rather just reuse it XD

static schooner

yeah, that's better than powerline ethernet by a mile

exotic yoke

like i cant run anything there

blazing parcel

its a solid solution imo

what do you want the camera for?

exotic yoke

idk

#

i like knowing when people enter my apt ig cause the uni people do that sometimes

blazing parcel

i cant say much, i have three cameras pointed at my desk for connecting into frigate and being a workbench assistant XD

exotic yoke

but also like i have an existing camera its just shit
and i have these nice ones

blazing parcel
#

sometimes just because its fun XD

exotic yoke
#

im tempted to plug in the ip camera just to point at this old temperature sensor i have cause wtf else am i supposed to do with it

blazing parcel
#

use a pi pico or esp with a dht22

unborn merlin
exotic yoke
#

LIKE I COULD RUN A ETHERNET CABLE ALL THE WAY ACROSS THE APARTMENT, IT'D JUST BE THE WORST THING EVER

unborn merlin
#

no the worst thing ever is having people entering your apartment without your permission/notice..

solar zealot
#

You could deploy a wireless wire if it doesn't need poe

static schooner
#

I did that for a POTS phone line when I lived in on-campus housing. Around door frames and such

exotic yoke
#

it doesnt need poe, it just doesnt have wifi, its just an ethernet port

blazing parcel
#

well so you can throw together an esp32 with esphome with a dht22 and get humidty and temp from your house in a readout instead of trying to read a video feed over ip of a thermometer

#

the abstraction is painful

exotic yoke
#

really i need to just buy a fucking door sensor

#

im just gonna do that

static schooner
#

that was back when I shared space with dinosaurs

exotic yoke
#

cause the camera i have works but its motion detection is complete garbage

blazing parcel
#

i was more saying its a bad solution as you can solve it more reliably for $5

unborn merlin
#

thats why we offload that to frigate.

exotic yoke
#

my idea is very stupid

#

i just

#

wtf else do i do with these cameras

blazing parcel
#

like thei ssue with the camera is you have no way to use that data for anything

solar zealot

But if you solve it for cheap you don't spend money on it :'c that's half the fun

exotic yoke

i legally cannot sell them

literally nobody would care

ebay will not let me

i tried

unborn merlin

ebay has repeatedly gotten in trouble for selling fucking drug materials and etc.

#

you just sell it as a generic ip camera

#

don't even state the brand; and nobody will caare.

blazing parcel
exotic yoke
#

oh i agree the camera is stupid

#

but its free

unborn merlin
#

anyone who is gonna use chinese IP cameras sensibly will throw them on a VLAN anyways

#

and then.. its irrelevant if they're backdoored or not

blazing parcel
# exotic yoke but its free

is it? i dont think you are thining of the mental cost and the amount of work you have to do to instead offset the fact you spent nothing. in effort and work you will def spend more

exotic yoke
#

i wasnt even planning on doing image recognition

blazing parcel
#

well if the only thing you want to do is not have to get up, go for it honestly lol

#

but if you want to use it anywhere else for data or tracking its a bad solution

exotic yoke
#

mostly wanted to check on my bedrooms temp remotely

blazing parcel
#

still say a dht22 would be way better just because then you get actual data out of it, but thats because im a data w*o$e

unborn merlin
#

then use a sensor that actually makes sense for it.

exotic yoke
#

yeah i mean i should get one of those pre-packaged wifi/smart thermostat things

unborn merlin
#

shelly. go buy a shelly thing. πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

blazing parcel
#

fair, if it gets the data and is in a format you are okay with go for it. i just have fun building stuff from scratch

though the esp solution allows for easy expansion over the gpio if you later want to add even more snesors

you just by the sensors and wire em up

and if im buying shit, i might as well take the easy route

blazing parcel

its all about scope and preference tbh

#

i personally get more value to me out of doing it myself, but thats because my preferences are different

#

both are valid solutions

#

i just get so much dopamine out of doing it myself XD

exotic yoke
#

lol i get that

static schooner
#

do you have to pay extra for equipment that comes with dopamine?

exotic yoke
#

i mean so much of my HA stuff has been extremely diy, but moreso on the software end

blazing parcel
unborn merlin
#

... I'm getting the feeling that DIY stuff is gonna suffer in the future from a lack of "I asked the AI to do it for me" ability to work in physical reality.

blazing parcel

it just comes in the package, its crazy

blazing parcel

always something you can add or improve in your HA pipeline lol

scenic radish

I just made a very surprising discovery. The ThirdReality multisensor nightlight thing fits in our electrical outlet on our back patio lol

I have a use case for an outdoor light sensor, so this just might fit the bill

unborn merlin

.... yeah but is that actually going t

#

i thought it was a PIR for a second

blazing parcel
unborn merlin
#

yeah, you're not gonna get support from me on the mass content stealing technology. πŸ˜‰

blazing parcel
#

that counts as stupid things....

unborn merlin
#

And yet.

it remains the literal core of the technology.

blazing parcel
#

well, then you should do some research into overal ML. ai is a blanket term, there are many more cases where it does make sense.

exotic yoke
#

finally bought the smart curtain things ive been wanting for ages

blazing parcel
#

it is litterally just pattern matching and prediction

hollow glacier
#

We are ai lovers in this household

exotic yoke
#

doesnt make sense in my current apartment, but my new apartment has a 13' window opening, so these will be sick

unborn merlin
blazing parcel
#

frigate is ai...

#

thats my point

unborn merlin
#

slop and ML are different things.

blazing parcel
#

i dont disagree, i disagree with your choice of blanket terms

unborn merlin
#

neither is any sort of actual intelligence.

exotic yoke
#

oh interesting i should try that

blazing parcel
#

llm and image models, sure, however the core of the technology is not theft, that is just what we have decided to use it for for some dumb reason. the exact same process and tools can also be used on properly sourced data.... like mri scans, documentation collections for enterprise systems that are obnixously expansive. There are places you can do this wihtout it being theft, that is the whole point i was trying to make. steel is not inherntly bad, but we can make some pretty dangerous and hateful things with it. you are conflating a technology with human greed

unborn merlin
#

and all this newer shit is being based more off slop and pitching slop to people rather than just using ML

#

because ML has existed for fucking ever

blazing parcel
#

did you read the first sentence i said?

unborn merlin
#

but isn't a good enough buzz word to jerk the economy off.

blazing parcel
#

the CORE of the technology is pattern recognition and prediction..... llms and image models are just an application of that (a bad one albiet)

unborn merlin
#

except llms are slop.

blazing parcel
#

yep

#

agreed

unborn merlin
#

do they give you a statistical output on what they produce is equal to what you asked? no.

blazing parcel
#

however llm !== ai

unborn merlin
#

ML is statistical and mostly predictable

blazing parcel
#

they are not the same thing

unborn merlin
#

and yet; the term AI is mostly co-opted by grifter fuckwits

blazing parcel
#

one is a subsection of the other thing

#

humans are mammels.... but not all mammels are humans

unborn merlin
#

and not all ceos are humans, yes.

#

some have replaced the emotional stuff with the grifter phenotype.

blazing parcel
#

also i want to point to the roots of the words in AI, the etymological breakdown of the word is ars/artis in latin meaning art/skill/craft referring to the human ability create or manipulate something. the other half is facere also latin meaing to make or do, it refers to the construction or production. it leitterally breaks down into a "fake, or handi craft of humans trying to imitate the thing or idea" it does not mean what is "artifical" is a 1:1 it is not actually inteligent. it is the artifical of inteligence. its "faked human made thing to emulate inteligence" it does not mean it is inteligent

#

when you are trying to argue something these semantics do matter, as this is a broad field that has many applicatyions that are not llm's and image generators

unborn merlin
#

aah yes because latin bullshit and etymological stuff matters when billions of dollars ahve gone into using a word for grift.

#

and again.

I don't consider ML models as ai or slop.

blazing parcel
#

the issue is they are ai

#

by definition

unborn merlin
#

not in the commonly used grift definition they aren't.

#

otherwise frigate would be a commercial product worth a few billion right now.

#

πŸ˜‰

blazing parcel
#

are either of us in this conversation in that category?

#

no

#

so it does matter here

#

because in this discussion we are being accurate, we are people who actually do know better

unborn merlin
#

i'm really not going to continue with your 'um acksually' here.

blazing parcel
#

then dont, but also stop sitting in here harassing anything everyone says. we are just here trying to have a discussion

unborn merlin
#

you do you; have fun. πŸ™ƒ
