Fair, but I'm very much a "computers should be neither seen nor heard" kinda person.
The more it can blend into the background the better, if that means that you just have to have a small loop/kink in the fibre to increase sensitivity (without overly increasing visibility), I count that as a win

I just did something a little bit ugly.
I have 5 ecobee thermostats.
once every few months, one will randomly just drop off the network and I have automations that need to see them.
so... I setup a ping routine in home assistant and if any of them are lost for 10 minutes, a Shelly wifi relay I installed in the furnace controller box toggles the 24v C-wire and resets them all. and it notifies my phone.

benefit of running HAOS as a vm is snapshots, I make a vm snapshot for each update, when something is wrong, 5min and am back running. I run HAOS on my mac mini with vmware Fusion (free for personal use). Installation is easy and what said, beside backups, I can make snapshots of the whole vm including all apps.

I woke up to find my entire Zigbee network offline. I've tried power cycling my Pi, restoring backups (first the most recent, then one from a few days earlier) - no improvement. Just had a Kickstarter for some HA devices wrap up. I -think- I can replace all my remaining Tuya devices once those arrive. Basically just climate sensors and a couple buttons.

as a filthy casual, I think Synology was a great way to get comfortable with setting up and maintaining a NAS. If I started today, I would probaby vibe-rig something a lot simpler, given how you can just yeet containers at a NAS to get what you want. I also don't love how Synology seemed to just roll out 50 "Whatever Station" barebones apps for shit like video, photos, drive and show zero interest in maintaining them.

All this said, I genuinely don't know of any other actor in the "approachable NAS" segment I would trust significantly more. Netgear? Ugreen? They just feel like the same shit to me.

The Ugreen / Minisforum / whatever types are at least selling you a fairly standard PC that you can put whatever OS on.
Costs a little more, but you get a good-enough piece of hardware that has most of the things you need, in a nice small chassis

Way back when (about 15 years ago) someone asked me to do a standard Debian install on a Netgear of some description, I had to crack the case open and use a recycled rear panel USB socket to add a flash drive inside it to boot off, then install over serial (which was exposed as a 3x1 0.1" header on the rear panel)

I thought this might be a good group to ask. I’m in the USA and I’m looking for a home phone type device. My feeling is that these days a cellular connection is actually more reliable than VoIP (open to opinions here). I want it to be very simple, like a single screen with buttons for different people to call. The idea is that this device allows small children or older adults experiencing cognitive decline to easily access emergency services and some list of pre programmed people. Some kind of cellular phone device with the simple screen and a charging cradle would be ideal. Also looking for advice on service providers that are cheaper than a normal phone line with a data plan.
