Ymmv but I just don't really find the UI that useful. Definitely not useful enough to spend that kind of money on a static display on the wall as cool as it looks

round crystal

I'm assuming he uses a zigbee proxy?

round crystal

he did that, he just calls the HA APIs

I watched the video. What I mean is that most of the stuff you want should already be automated. Like he has

Might not be actually. Either way as cool as it looks it's not something I would miss

Alright I have two wired cameras that are connected to the network via powerline ethernet, and I want to move away from that, but since running Ethernet sadly isn't a practical option, the only solution I can think of feels so stupid but I might just do it anyway lol... Unifi Device Bridge > Unifi Flex Mini switch (to be able to have the cameras on the correct VLAN since it's not possible with the UDB) > unmanaged PoE switch (that I already have) > cameras

#

That feels so janky it almost makes me want to just stick with powerline ethernet

#

One advantage with my proposed solution is that I could put all of it on a UPS

grizzled gull
#

Not a Unifi guy, but why not just use a cheap wifi extender with an ethernet out and then a POE switch?

#

Or is that basically what you're proposing?

grizzled gull
#

For my setup I just have a different SSID on a different vlan and do it that way, but again not a Unifi guy

minor bobcat
scenic radish
stuck mortar
stuck mortar
grizzled gull
#

most extenders you can hide the SSID

stuck mortar
#

One is a gateway for my solar inverter, other is for the tv

#

IMO an AP bridge would be better than an extender. No reason to have extra interference blasting out

scenic radish
#

Yeah, I'm looking at an extender now that appears to have the ability to disable its own SSIDs

solar zealot
#

Idk why you would want to switch from a fairly unreliable connection to a totally unreliable connection

#

Especially for security gear

grizzled gull
scenic radish
#

Would a good 5 GHz connection not be as reliable if not more than powerline ethernet? Plus I could put these cameras on a UPS if I moved away from powerline ethernet which would be nice since my other cameras and network equipment are on UPSes

solar zealot
#

Absolutely not

grizzled gull
#

a 2.4 imo would be more reliable then 5ghz, but power line trumps both

scenic radish
#

I realize wi-fi wasn't exactly designed with constant video streaming (without buffering) in mind though

grizzled gull
#

meh cameras use such little bandwidith I don't think thats the issue

scenic radish
grizzled gull
#

bigger issue with wifi is if someone really wanted in, they could just overload the frequencies

scenic radish
#

tru

grizzled gull
#

We have some traffic stuff that kills my wireless android auto, its really wierd, and android auto is just a wifi connection

solar zealot
#

high tech solutions such as the brrrrrrrrrr machine and other access points do this well enough unintentional

scenic radish
#

yeah I guess I'll just stick with powerline ethernet although it's a bummer that they can't be on a UPS then

solar zealot
#

Why not, if it's the same circuit that should work

scenic radish
#

powerline ethernet does tickle my brain for some reason too, so there's that

static schooner
#

You should get that looked at

solar zealot
#

Tho I guess if you'd have that setup you could also run eth

scenic radish
#

or even some power strips for that matter

solar zealot
#

No but you could just inject it after the ups

scenic radish
#

wat

solar zealot
#

Wire it so that both sides run behind the ups

#

The output should be fairly alright compared to what's usually going on on your local grid

grizzled gull
#

I dunno about energizing an entire branch

scenic radish
#

I'm thinking I might not be totally clear

#

the adapters are in separate rooms

high remnant
grizzled gull
#

via UPS that sounds a little sketch

solar zealot
#

if it's just dedicated to the cameras that should be fine, but as I said requires you to be wired for it

scenic radish
#

I legitimately have no idea what you're suggesting lol

grizzled gull
#

Better off running network cable... if you don't want to, hire a low voltage guy to do it

solar zealot
#

that would be the easier option in some cases yes

grizzled gull
#

run the cable along baseboards, corners of walls if you don't want to drill

scenic radish
#

the two rooms are separated by two bathrooms

grizzled gull
#

thats it?

scenic radish
#

no access below or above

grizzled gull
#

Run it along the ceiling and get a jacket that matches your ceiling color

solar zealot
#

wires come in various lengths and so do drills and people on Facebook marketplace SCWhehehehehe

#

Right through the tub, the landlords special

grizzled gull
#

they even make network cables that go inbetween windows

#

flat cables that do POE

scenic radish
solar zealot
#

Can you run it above the ceiling?

#

Probably not

scenic radish
solar zealot
#

ah

grizzled gull
#

Is it your residence? not a rental?

scenic radish
#

rental, so that's also more holes than I'd like to fix after

grizzled gull
#

You'd be surprised how easy cables disappear once you get used to them

solar zealot
#

The alternative could be fiber but that would loose any benefit of poe. That stuff hides in paint

scenic radish
#

I've even thought about getting plenum-rated cable and running it through the ductwork 🤣

#

I've run through pretty much every scenario for wiring and I haven't been terribly pleased with any of the ideas

#

and I have a decent amount of experience running cabling

#

I should also mention that these particular cameras are rather insignificant as far as the security setup goes

#

thankfully I've been able to properly wire the ones that matter the most

#

meh, now I don't know what to do 🤣 if they were more significant, I would probably make the effort to wire them and hide the cable as best as possible

#

I might see how stable the feeds are with a wi-fi extender acting as a wired bridge compared to powerline ethernet

scenic radish
#

Gonna do it, fite me irl

static schooner
#

I think you should add a cell connection in there. Maybe satellite

scenic radish
#

Damn, good call

#

fine, I'll just stick with powerline TT_chiyo_cry

hoary canyon
#

I learned about a trick that involves just pulling off the baseboard trim and running it in the wall behind the baseboard trim, then tacking the trim back up

#

Basically you cut the holes in the drywall behind the baseboard where it covers it and then tack the baseboard trim back up

stuck mortar
hoary canyon
#

Considered MoCA Adapters also if you have coax?

static schooner
#

I added crown molding in a room to hide speaker wire 🙂

scenic radish
scenic radish
#

I really have exhausted all practical options

hoary canyon
#

I mean you can probably just take more baseboard off in the rooms behind it and run it around to the other room, definitely a bit of work but better than patching drywall

scenic radish
#

Nope, there are two bathrooms between

#

So it would need to go up the wall, across the ceilings, and back down the wall

#

And it would probably look like garbage coming out of the wall and up to the ceiling since the cable would of course need to come out of the wall below the header

hoary canyon
#

The best idea I have is trying to figure out a path to use the trim method. From what i've seen all it involves is prying it off gently, then reapplying small nails to tack it again. Put some caulk over the small holes in the trim, and above and you're done

#

That's assuming the baseboard trim is white...

scenic radish
#

Yep, but that suffers from the same issue with coming out of the wall and going up to the ceiling

hoary canyon
#

Is this an outdoor or indoor cam

scenic radish
#

One indoor, one outdoor

#

I am still kind of tempted to explore running plenum-rated cable in the return ducts, but that would be extremely challenging even with the balloon method

#

but if I managed to get that to work, in the destination room, I could run the cable in the wall from the return duct down to the baseboard and then run it along the baseboards to the target location

#

I'm also surprised to see so much support for powerline Ethernet. I thought it was pretty frowned upon generally

hollow glacier
scenic radish
#

It does create a ton of RF noise apparently too which makes sense given how it works

static schooner
#

Just replace the power lines with Ethernet and run your power over Ethernet

#

They won't mind 120v 60Hz AC, right?

hollow glacier
#

Isn’t that just PoE++++

dawn badge
#

Powerline adaptors can fuck right off.
For a short term emergency fix I sort of understand why people might use them but for long term usage I don.t get it... They can cause issues and can easily be disrupted by other noisy appliances. The entire way they work is by creating noise and disrupting mains power therefore I think they should be illegal on the grounds that they actively and purposefully disrupt grid power.

#

Also my dock crashed.

#

And I fixed it by killing it

#

Seriously tho, I wondered why my transitions were so rough before

#

it's because I had no transition time

#

A little slowness smooths out brightness steps massively

ocean oar
#

Maybe I need to try coding the same "step" feature for colour temperature

round crystal
#

Yes please

ocean oar
#

Had to do that in a template.

round crystal
#

I'd love that as a termplate / script / whatever

ocean oar
#

I like my lights to get more yellow as they dim

round crystal
#

👀

#

I just made an automation to set all my lights to the same colour temperature

#

Saved me so much hassle.

#

Now I can turn it into a scene

atomic delta
#

I just have a bunch of random scenes for different colors. Like anti-migraine green.

round crystal
#

Im still figuring out what to automate tbh

#

I just had an idea for one, a reminder to charge my mac

#

I forget to all the time and pull a dead MBP out of my backpack often because I'm so used to not having to charge.

ocean oar
#

My greatest one by far was a sensor on the garage door + the Shelly relay on the path lighting to automatically turn the lights on if the door is opened after sunset

round crystal
#

neat

#

I'd do that but probably with hue's outdoor lights

#

these

#

I love the design. hate the price.

#

tbf I can't complain, I have about 30+ hue devices.

#

at this rate, I'll be the first HA user to cross the 1k hue device mark

ocean oar
#

Our house came with hard-wired 230V lighting up the side of the path. I just added the Shelly and called it a day

round crystal
#

why 230v?

#

that seems very overkill for lights

ocean oar
#

Because I live in a country with proper electricity

#

Or do you mean why not 24V?

#

Probably because at least some of them were installed in 1990 when the house was built. Half are bulkhead lights screwed onto concrete walls

round crystal
#

We're 120v iirc

#

Yep

#

@ocean oar I just learned about /r/poutinecrimes

#

This is gold

#

Also this poutine is a hate crime

ocean oar
#

Tbh I'm not sold on the concept. The crispy potatoes should be kept separate from any and all sauces until right before the moment of consumption

#

Mixing them together just makes both things worse

#

Exact same ingredients served separately, amazing

round crystal
#

I'm really not using HA to it's fullest potential

#

The issue is the automations I want to do, I can't because I'm in a condo

#

One feature I wish HA had is geofencing

#

Like the ability to draw a rectangle around the area I want to trigger by

atomic delta
#

Pretty sure it does, but circular. I don't use that though.

round crystal
#

what do you use?

scenic radish
ocean oar
#

I genuinely like fries with gravy. And fries and cheese (but preferably some kind of gooey cheese sauce). Just need to keep them segregated until they're mere seconds from my mouth so I get crispy + gooey in every bite.

It's awesome what you can do with a cheap, small, and network-connected system like that, but encrypted ATSC3.0 is coming to eat it some day. Or maybe not, depending on the backlash

static schooner

first proper HA automation
my weird fan has this thing where it has speeds 0-8, and then the max speed is a separate preset called turbo

#

alright 2nd useful automation, been meaning to add this for WEEKS
my humidifier's auto mode is really passive and cant keep the humidity to the target even though it definitely is capable
so i use HA to control the fan speed instead, and i copied the logic of my old dumb Dreo humidifier, which is

eg if the humidity is set to target 50% (and grace window is set to 3%)
humidity 50+%: fan speed 0
humidity 49%: fan speed 33%
humidity 48%: fan speed 66%
humidity 0-47%: fan speed 100%

so a lot more aggressive, with still a little wiggle room

#

there's a helper toggle so i can turn it back to its builtin auto mode, and i can adjust the size of the grace window if i want it more or less aggressive

Okay this is a cool addition to Frigate and is something I've been wanting for a while: https://docs.frigate.video/configuration/custom_classification/state_classification

State classification allows you to train a custom MobileNetV2 classification model on a fixed region of your camera frame(s) to determine a current state. The model can be configured to run on a schedule and/or when motion is detected in that region. Classification results are available through the frigate//classification/ MQTT topic and in Home...

also dream of just having straight power and just control signals back in a big box ina basement..

#

relays do all the work where they have space..

plain pendant
#

Yeah I thought about that if you ran a house full of hue Lights

unborn merlin
#

hue is.. i just swapped them out for govee matter recently

#

i had like.. the original hue color bulbs

#

they're all cracked on the ceramic.. still work but shiit. 😄

plain pendant
#

I only use them in lamps and mostly the whites

unborn merlin
#

oh I see how it is. /s

plain pendant

But the idea of only z wave remotes and a lighting panel fascinates me

#

You should do it and make a YouTube channel

#

I'll smash the like button

unborn merlin
#

i used to too; but damn its annoying how every zwave thing is more expensive..

plain pendant
#

Yeah but my antenna is in the basement and everything is direct back to it, no mesh fuckery even on the second floor. Works flawless so far

#

I have the paper towel holder and leviton Z-Wave 800 lr switches.

My mesh is mostly fine, even to two detached buildings. One switch decides to misbehave randomly

plain pendant
#

Hey what the f living room sconce switch

#

Now I'm going to have to Google how to fix that

#

Lol The switches are side by side and they're kind of right on top of the antenna

plain pendant
#

But I'm new here

stuck mortar

Mostly zooz switches. Others work fine including another one in the same switch box. RF trickery from metal in the way I’m sure

Ooph metal boxes

So small

stuck mortar

Not metal box. Metal mesh for stucco, metal wrapped door nearby, metal flashing, metal sliding door screen, 4-gang box filled with lots of wires… and just generally going through lots of walls

Can anyone recommend a 95mm2 cable crimp tool, also needs different heads, going to need 35mm2.

Available in the EU!

Doesn't have to integrate with home assiatant, or come with a free raccoon, but I will not complain of it fullfills either of those.

Many thanks!

Also, I ordered a couple small busbars, they are rated to 625A 🤣

last cedar
tidal bronze
#

only 625A?

last cedar
#

Yeah, didn't want to make it too easy for the current to flow

#

Got a rack with space for 6 batteries, 100Ah each, so theoretically you can pull 720A for 2 seconds from the batteries, but the main cables will be fused to 250A

#

Inverters are rated at 210A

#

The 600A busbar is just because I wanted something meaty to bolt the lugs into, ended up going for a 10mm thick 25mm bar

#

The 30x8 was considerably more expensive and less mm2

#

I probably should also say it is a 48V system, not a high voltage one

tidal bronze
#

So you building your own UPS?

last cedar
#

Yes

#

For the whole house

tidal bronze
#

That's a tall undertaking but awesome!

last cedar
#

Nah, I am quite short, actually

tidal bronze
#

I explored the idea but then went with NG Generator

#

For my consumption battereies didn't make sense

last cedar
#

We have reasonably expensive gas here, only in bottles

#

Can't really get large deliveries

last cedar
tidal bronze
#

NG is the cheapest here, I never even look at a bill.

#

Summer just my AC units are about 11 ~ 13 KW constant. Can't stack enough BATS to make it work 🙂

stuck mortar
#

I didn’t know bats could produce electricity

tidal bronze
#

They do, if you push them they even invent bio-viruses

#

Is it an electrolytic cell situation, or more of a wind turbine thing?

#

Phonovoltaic perhaps

plain pendant
#

The entire thing is stored in a Rubbermaid shed in his backyard

#

In a lot of cases, instead of disconnects he used like large circuit breakers he found from around the building we work in

last cedar
#

I am wanting to do a slightly more insurance friendly version of that 😄

Victron 3 phase setup with rack mounted batteries

plain pendant
#

I'll be honest with you. His is done really well and it's not going to burn down but man does. It really hurt my soul

last cedar
#

But yeah, lumps of copper for busbar 🤣

plain pendant
#

And even if it does, it's just a shed in the backyard

#

He monitors everything remotely and switches off the main breaker for eversource and only turns it back on as needed

#

But he's also making a mini Cooper all-wheel drive so

#

It's like if I just gave into every intrusive thought I ever had, it would be this guy's life

#

He has solar panels that change angles through an app

#

He really needs a YouTube channel

so I will have 1 day of battery for the entire house, or 2 days if I double them

tidal bronze

You mean 15KWh?

last cedar

also, I have a server I need to turn off, that pulls around 3kWh

#

Yes, kWh

3kwh??? wooops @last cedar

I believe it uses around 120W, plus what the UPS is using

dusty mica

same for me more or less

I just haven't got round to turning it off yet...
