Hi everyone!

I’m Tianzhi He, an Assistant Professor at UT San Antonio. Our team is currently working on a research project proposal focused on safety, security, and privacy challenges in the Home Assistant ecosystem, and we are looking to connect with community members who may be interested in collaborating.

I’d love to hear from:

  • Deep developers or maintainers
  • Experienced power users
  • Newer users who are actively learning and deploying Home Assistant

All perspectives are valuable: technical, user-facing, or ecosystem-level.

If you’re interested, feel free to reach out to me directly at tianzhi.he@utsa.edu.

I’ve also shared more background and details of this project on the Home Assistant Community Forum here:

Thanks, and I really appreciate the community’s time and openness!

vivid berry
#

Any recommendations for a hardwired relay for RPi Home Assistant? Trying to control a 12V alarm horn.

solar zealot
#

Any relay should work that's rated for the appropriate current

vivid berry
#

I just don't know how Home Assistant will recognize it.

#

Does it have some native recognition of the ports on the RPi?

solar zealot
#

It won't recognize it at all

#

You need an integration that can detect your hardware

vivid berry
#

Do you know of any specifics I can look at? Relays are a bit new for me (other than using the Zooz Multirelay).

solar zealot
#

You may want to prefer also buying an esp32 and use esphome to run the horn

#

They have their own discord with a more extensive diy section. Id also just buy what I see on Amazon ^^

vivid berry
#

Would I use Home ASsistant at all if I use esphome?

solar zealot
#

Yes esphome easily integrates into homeassistant

forest edge
dawn badge
#

it really depends on what exactly your circuit layout / load / etc... is

vivid berry
#

It's just a pair of 12V horn speakers. I have a Meanwell 12V power supply. Just need the relay to interupt the common line.

forest edge
#

shelly 1 can do that

dawn badge
vivid berry
#

Cool.

#

And shelly 1 has an integration with Home Assistant?

solar zealot
#

Yes

dawn badge
#

yeah shelly works out the box

vivid berry
#

What about it's reliability as WiFi?

#

Is there perhaps a better option that is hard-wired for more reliability?

forest edge
#

shelly 1 is hardwired

vivid berry
#

The horns are for my home security system so I'm hoping to have virtually no downtime or interruption.

#

Oh.

#

It says WiFi-operated on their website. Might be lookinga the wrong version.

forest edge
#

infact if you get the gen 4 you can use wifi or zigbee or blutooth

solar zealot
#

You will need a wifi network to have it work through wifi

#

Wether or not that's reliable depends on your environment and a couple other things

dawn badge
#

the Shelly Pro 1 has an ethernet port but its a din rail mount device

forest edge
#

shelly's are not cheap tuya crap. it will be reliable

vivid berry
dawn badge
#

but i think you have to power the pro with mains

forest edge
#

heck I still have some gen 1's in service

vivid berry
#

I have a Zigbee network, so if these are reliable via Zigbee, I can just do that.

solar zealot
forest edge
vivid berry
#

Got it.

forest edge
#

or even zwave now I guess

vivid berry
#

I would prefer not to use Zwave anymore.

#

I only have my relays on it.

forest edge
#

tho the zwave models are a seperate and inclusivbe thing. not even sure the zwave ones have wifi

vivid berry
#

Meanwhile my Zigbee network is really built out with switches, sensors, etc.

dawn badge
vivid berry
#

Great, I'll get those.

#

Oh, and Matter haha. I have a good Matter network too.

solar zealot
#

no gen 4 plugs yet besides the us variant :'c

vivid berry
#

Well, do you guys have an opinion on what protocol would be best? WiFi, Zigbee, or Matter?

forest edge
#

it all works

solar zealot
#

pretty much

forest edge
#

matter is pretty much just wifi anyways unless you use the horrid thread

vivid berry
#

Can you use Matter without thread?

forest edge
#

yes

solar zealot
#

matter over thread of Zigbee devices but not compatible with Zigbee xD

dawn badge
#

the matter on shelly deices is over wifi

vivid berry
#

How do I use Matter over WiFi?

forest edge
#

they might be able to do thread too. not sure not looked

vivid berry
#

I'd probably prefer to switch to that since my Thread router is my stupid Google Home unit.

dawn badge
forest edge
#

I would just use wifi or zigbee and skip matter imo

dawn badge
#

essentuaally matter-over-thread and matter-over-wifi are 2 differnt things

vivid berry
#

Well, I bought like 25 Inovelli switches, all Matter 😛

forest edge
vivid berry
#

So I'm a bit committed to it in that sense.

dawn badge
vivid berry
#

Thread

#

They've been working great.

dawn badge
#

saying just "matter" is like saying "liquid fuel" sure something might be liquid fuel but it might not work in your engine 😛

forest edge
#

shelly is just matter over wifi.. guess they have no plans to support thread even tho the hardware can support it

dawn badge
vivid berry
#

I don't plan to expand my Matter network too much more. I have Inovelli switches, my three window shades, and a few smart plugs on it.

forest edge
#

I dunno.. they don't seem keen to support the addon over zigbee so they don't always listen to customers

dawn badge
#

this whole issue with matter is probably why it will fail.

#

nobody can market it correctly because there's no simple way of explaining that there are 2 different things called the same thing.

forest edge
#

honestly not sure why there even is two variants

dawn badge
#

@vivid berry btw be sure to get the "shelly 1" not the "shelly 1 mini" the mini doesn't support powering by DC

ocean oar
#

(but it will still work if you have an AC power source, because it is still a dry contact relay)

#

(but also, just buy the full-size one)

vivid berry
#

Yeah, I'd prefer this anyway since it's double the amperage.

#

I could use one of these to control my entire landscape lighting transformer.

dawn badge
vivid berry
#

And this is a single relay per device?

#

Yeah, 1-channel. Got it.

dawn badge
ocean oar
#

The 2-channel isn't a dry contact, so it's fine if you need a 120/230V output, but not if you want to switch 12V

vivid berry
#

I don't see a 2-channel version.

#

But yeah, I need to switch 12V so doesn't matter.

#

12V for one, 24V for another line.

#

I built my own low voltage light transformer and one of the power supplies is running 24V so I can size down the wiring on a particularly long run.

forest edge
#

besides over thread they could pull some weird stuff to in regards to requiring a certian hub etc like how aqara did

dawn badge
forest edge
#

true. found that out first hand lol

#

altho that same limits could be applies to either

#

they could just f00k you straight up over thread and not include that info with no alternative means of getting it

ocean oar
dawn badge
forest edge
#

lets just face it. they messed up matter and best to never mention it again

dawn badge
forest edge
#

what does tp sell that uses matter?

#

oh the plugs etc

#

I keep forgetting kasa is tp

dawn badge
forest edge
#

thread has been in echo crap for awhile

#

thread by itself has always been that red headed step child

dawn badge
#

for matter to be saved it needs to overhaul its certification.

#

if companies pull this bullshit then they get their certification pulled.

forest edge
#

I don't get the issue with just using one protocol universally. it would actually make things cheaper for companies in the long run

dawn badge
#

Ikea at the latest in terrible marketing. they slap "matter" everywhere but to know that its thread you have to delve deep into the user manual
so people that are used to matter being a wifi thing because of some random smartplug think its all good then they ask how to put in wifi details.

then the reverse on some companies wifi devices. "why is matter asking for wifi creds?, the whole point is that its not wifi"
makes me slam my head into the desk

forest edge
#

lets go back to the days of 433Mhz with the occasional oddball 315Mhz

ocean oar
#

At least the signal went through walls properly 😛

forest edge
#

it does

#

I have yet to ever have an issue and I got tons of weather and buttons running on it

vivid berry
#

Is a device either Matter over Thread or Matter over WiFi? Or can some do both?

forest edge
#

not sure I have seen a device support both yet but technically the hardware is there on esp devices

vivid berry
#

So my Inovellis that are Thread won't do WiFi?

#

Now I feel like I should've gotten all Zigbee for my Inovellis.

#

Expensive mistake if Matter ends up being an issue.

forest edge
#

have you looked them up? they may support just wifi

dawn badge
vivid berry
#

I only see Thread when I look them up.

#

I won't worry for now. They've been bullet proof so far.

#

More reliable than some of my Zigbee devices tbh.

dawn badge
#

then probably thread only then

vivid berry
#

But I don't know if that's because Inovelli is very high quality or because Matter/Thread is a good protocol.

dawn badge
forest edge
#

I think here if you were to deck out your house with wifi smart stuff you can actually asks for more but if you were to do anything other protocol even if you included the hub etc you would either have to take a loss or remove those devices before closeout lol

vivid berry
#

Yeah lol

#

I never plan to leave this place though.

#

And if I did, I'd rip out all my Inovellis and swap them with dumb switches.

hmm. the ALPSTUGA CO₂ sensor seems to track fairly well (I've got an NDIR sensor to compare), but it's completely uncalibrated from the factory and appears to assume that the concentration when you first turn it on is ~390ppm… it adjusts over time if it sees lower concentrations later :/

sinful plinth
vivid wraith
#

Not sure how long I’d need to leave them there 🤔

mortal walrus
#

the only thing they say in the instructions is that "it may take up to 12 hours for an accurate CO₂ level reading" but it's been more than 12h for me and it's still reading about 350ppm lower than my NDIR sensor.

#

if you leave it outside… probably as long as you wait long enough for the temperature and humidity sensors to stabilize (iirc this type of CO₂ sensor needs to know accurate temperature and humidity for compensation in its calculations) it would be good enough. No idea about how well the sensor will work long term without occasionally having some fresh air for auto-calibration tho.

#

(but that's also true of many NDIR sensors too, the default is usually to auto-calibrate assuming the lowest CO₂ seen over the past week or so is ambient outdoor levels)

This is the "water-cooler" channel for Home assistant. Why shouldn't I ask a basic question here? Using a voice assistant in home assistant, I tell it to "set an alarm for 7:00 AM." My Ai linked assistant say's, "Got it. Setting an alarm for 7:00AM." Then immediately says, "I'm sorry, but I can't set alarms at the moment. If there's another smart home task I can assist with, let me know." for a voice assistant, this seems like such a basic task. Just wondering why it's not integrated within Home assistant?

Oh that reminds me I need to look into hardware for the Honeywell security system in my home from 2009, it’s like vista or something? I heard several places sell stuff I can put in or replace in the panel box that will let everything read into HA

carmine cloud
# forest edge really what do you actually need it to do?

I mean, just basic Thermostating, but her house has pretty bad temperature stratification between upstairs/downstairs. Only option on her current dumb thermostat is to keep the fan on constantly.
She's home most of the time so I don't really need Weekday/Weekend schedules, but daily schedule and random fan runs would be nice. I guess a $12 Honeywell is a decent solution. lol

#

Just curious if anyone would say "aaah no I used to have one and it sucked because XYZ."

forest edge
#

yea cheap one would work just fine

#

not saying the honeywells are crap.. it's only when you get into trying to intergrat them into other things like HA would this become a more complex situation

#

at which point ender's suggestion would be the correct one

carmine cloud
#

Sure. I have some pretty complex automations with my Ecobee and Aqara sensors in every room, but neighbor doesn't need that. 🙂

forest edge
#

I think even some of the cheaper honeywell ones can use those remote sensors for temp balancing between floors

dumb question: why is there no thread2mqtt ? instead need a matter specific addon ?

forest edge
#

no point I don't think

tough obsidian
#

Well.. one less integration no ? one less container to run/maintain ?

forest edge
#

matter requires a hub/server. hub if you are using an ecosystem or matter server if you are trying to connect like directly to HA

#

hub and server are the same thing, like a cordinator for zigbee etc

tough obsidian
#

I ordered a new radio for a thread border router but I know that I'll need to setup the OpenThread Router container to use it (I don't have HAOS so its a bit more of a pain apparently).. I guess this would be comparable to the zigbee2mqtt container I currently run.

Then I guess I'll just use the matter integration (doesn't need a container) so I guess it's fine.

I don't find anything more difficult haos vs container

I was away / unknown and nothing that required someone to be home worked. I fixed it and voila! Things worked. 😂😂😂

J3455 1.5ghz quad cores

#

4-8gb ram, but that can be fixed

#

Should be fine for many things when paired with an SSD

#

Im thinking of migrating my HAOS to it, off of my proxmox cluster. So i can take that offline when im not labbing.

#

Well, i would need to find a way to host the rest

dawn badge
#

any dual ethernet?

stiff smelt
#

Proxmox cluster on the 3 nucs xD

dawn badge
#

could run a opnsense router perhaps.

stiff smelt
#

Im more a mikrotik kinda guy and already have a hacked sophos running it :p

#

I might create a proxmox cluster out of it and see if it can run my daily stuff, could save me some power since my lab is quite power hungry

#

It may not even be able to run my home assistant 0_o

#

Is there a way in HAOS to see what's taking resources?

#

oh i have that lol

#

addon_a0d7b954_nodered running 5 days 21.2

I may be using node-red

#

xD

#

21% of my cpu's goes to node-red, maybe i should optimize

#

Oh well, thats not going to work. no way these nucs can run my haos

#

I dont really know that much about node-red. I have never used it. I know the concept of it and I guess why people would like it but I just use the build in automation engine.

#

Yeah, i come from the old yaml days, never changed my habbit. Also whenever i see someone make automations in the UI it makes me uncomfortable with the amount of configuration for simple things.

#

Also its easy to create your own functions within node-red based on javascript. I use a lot of custom automations that would be very hard to recplicate in the UI

#

For example my alarm system:

ew node red ;D

stiff smelt
#

Id be lost without it xD

#

{{ states.automation | count }} = 10

#

I wonder what those are actually lol

#

Oh those are just some automations to trigger WOL and such.

#

Im really surprised how little people use node-red, its so powerful.

solar zealot
#

its also pretty poorly done

dawn badge
stiff smelt
#

Yeah but there is no way i could even replace node-red with the functionality available in the UI

solar zealot
#

the functionality is pretty much identical, it just doesnt get displayed in such a flow way

solar zealot
#

well, minus the need to work around the horendous messaging and input allocation issues with nred

stiff smelt
#

Yeah some of it, might be possible but it would be very very complicated. I'm using custom javascript functions within node-red which i think would not even be possible in HA

# stiff smelt What?

yes its one of the most poorly implemented flow based tools. the need to redeclare properties through additional nodes just for the sake of identifying them as an input, paired with the best luck sync of states makes a lot of things very verbose to say at least

#

its really not good if you want to do anything but declare process steps

Since it removed my image...

#

the only difference in thought between the ui and this is that homeassistant wants you to describe your automations as trigger-condition-output

#

and as the output is a change this is effectively another trigger and so on

stiff smelt
#

Yeah which would make the total automation a big complicated structure in the UI, or am i wrong there
