Is there any way to get some helpful advice regarding the issues im having with Home Assistant??? I have posted a question on Facebook, GitHub, the HA online forum and there doesn’t seem to be anyone who can help? In fact I’ve had only 2 responses.
I’ve wasted hours trying different things and it’s doing my head in.

It’s a simple floorplan dashboard that just won’t work?!

Someone help please!

Merry Xmas Jorg!
I’ve posted on so many different channels, and I’ve had no more than a few unhelpful replies.
I wouldn’t call it crossposting, I would call it the full on carpet bombing approach, in the hope I will find someone online who knows how to use the software and who might be kind enough to help me out.
And your reply is less than helpful!

# patent geyser Merry Xmas Jorg! I’ve posted on so many different channels, and I’ve had no more...

It is unfortunate you find my reply unhelpful. However...
Posting the same in several channels (especially in one stating NO SUPPORT) is considered crossposting and against the server rules. As Wombat said, support is given by volunteers and the more niche a question is, the less people might be able to help.
There is no timely guarantee for answers.
If your impatience prevents you from following the server rules though, we will enforce it.

It's fascinating how Home Assistant tends to make the interface increasingly user-friendly, and how many questions could be resolved with a little learning and independent reading. HA is a victim of its own success: an interface that can be sophisticated but is adapted for the user who doesn't want to bother with complexities. When you buy Ikea furniture, it goes without saying that you should at least follow the assembly instructions, otherwise you might be missing an important feature. Otherwise, you'd be better off staying in a closed ecosystem like Google, HKit, etc.

marble elk
#

i have lots of fun knob and tube here

#

and no grounding at a lot of outlets

last cedar
#

We redid the whole house when I moved in

dawn badge
#

a lot of the regs were written around the WW2 era when we were building/rebuilding a lot but copper was in shortage because it was needed for military use (mostly planes). so a bunch of stuff is designed to minimise copper usage.

last cedar
#

Oven was so bad, I pulled fuses when I wasn't using it, socket was held on with tape

dawn badge
#

then things sort of stuck around.

last cedar
marble elk
#

im slowly redoing mine, turning off and disconnecting the old circuts and running that on-wall stuff since theres brick like right on the other side of that plaster. though indoor walls im hoping to do inwall stuff but we'll see if i can easily get wire down from the attic without tearing the whole wall apart

last cedar
#

I think you can run RCBOs now though right?

last cedar
dawn badge
#

iron too

#

RCBO's are getting more common here but only pretty recently in residential tbh.

marble elk
# last cedar Sounds like you have a good plan there!

yahh, just got the base part of that plan ready, there was a chimney that is no longer used(natural gas central heat, eventually maybe will swap for heat pump but) that goes the whole way from the attic to the basement where the power comes in. recently dug out the dirt that they literally threw in there and ran some plastic drainage tubing through it as a conduit. so i now have a actual good way to get power and data cables up there without needing everything to be UV rated and go through 3-4 layers of brick lol

dawn badge
# last cedar About time TBH

our regs are changing very rapidly at the moment. we had a while where there was a huge resistance to any change. but most of the people resisting have retired/died now so we can get more up to date. i imagine in the next 2/3 years we will be very up to date. that is also about the time where they want to be activly rolling out updating residential to 3-phase i think.

last cedar
#

About time (moving to 3 phase!)

#

but easy to say as someone who has 3 phase already

dawn badge
#

yeah it makes sense for a number of reasons but its mostly for future proofing and for the demand of people having ev chargers/heat pumps/battery storage/solar export etc...

#

few people are loosing their minds over some of the plans though (which are not even yet complete)

#

they are going to wire 3-phase to the property boundary and put the meter in a cabinet there. instead of into the property and wherever the person currently has the meter. old single phase in will be hooked to one of the phasees and the old meter bypassed. then you are on your own. if you want to make use of the 3p then you gotta wire it yourself on "your side" of the meter

#

just standard resistance to change

#

another funny thing people are loosing their minds about is that battery storage (and some other things) in loft/attic/roof-space has been banned (for good reason). but its very recent and there's a lot of "but my neighbour got theirs in the loft and it was done less than a year ago. i want it there. then its explained to them why having half a ton of batteries suspended above bedrooms is a bad idea.

last cedar
#

Probably people resisting are also flat earthers...

#

It is common sense really, something a lot of people lack

#

I am putting my batteries in the garage, it has a fire door and block walls, just because of that, it is common sense again, I think

#

I believe they have to be in their own fire cell, and also not in the same room as you live or sleep in

#

it would be even better in a totally seperate building but I am not quite there yet

scenic radish
#

I want to understand why my cat likes being schmacked with a paper towel tube, but there doesn't appear to be any research on this topic

dawn badge
#

yeah for the most part outside or in external building is the standard now. you can technically still have them inside but its very limited. e.g. not in "normally inhabited rooms" the room itself has to have an exit. and there has to alternate exits for all over rooms. etc...

dawn badge
#

obviously without harming said cat.

scenic radish
#

The only difference between goofing around and science is documenting the results

dawn badge
#

science has proved time and time again that cats are difficult to work with mind.

#

WarKitteh: In my job I have to deliver frequent Information Security briefings to both technical and non-technical professionals. I noticed that as the material got more technical, I began to lose the non-technical crowd. Therefore, I started including humorous pictures of cats and made the briefings include stories about those cats. This worked...

umbral cliff
#

In Australia RCDs (or RCBOs) have been required on all circuits for over a decade now
Even lighting and oven/hotplate circuits

dawn badge
umbral cliff
#

Yeah guessed uk from the ring main talk before

dawn badge
umbral cliff
#

They’re good things to have on a circuit

#

RCBOs aren’t super common here either, but would tick the requirement
Quite possibly could be on new builds

dawn badge
#

most houses have 2 RCD's and each protects half the circuits which each have an MCB.

umbral cliff
#

Fun fact with Australian wiring, our lights must be on a separate circuit to the outlets

umbral cliff
dawn badge
#

you can use rcbos on every circuit instead but its more expensive (although less so now)

umbral cliff
#

Could probably do the same and just have one covering a set of circuits, but think it’s cheaper to just get them integrated as it’s the standard breaker I see electricians use now

dawn badge
#

yeah RCBO's are also more reliable in their bi directional version. which is good for various renewable sources / batteries / etc...

#

the price difference is not as big as it used to be and has benifits so rcbos are getting there now

#

let me see if i have a photo of my consumer unit

#

you can see how the mcb's are split and each set are protected by an RCD

#

thats probably the most common setup seen in the UK unless its been redone for renewables or otherwise rewired

#

a surge protection device is now a requirement too but wasn't when that board was installed. although we have one in a another box that was put in to handle the EV circuits separately.

#

I will also point out that this is not a great example of a uk board as its wiring neatness is appalling.

# peak slate Tar backups of what?

Well, I am running a very almost latest version || 2024.3.3 || so it has the old backup system, I just go in via the menu on the left and make and download the backup

peak slate
#

The backups also include the DB which for historical data can grow pretty big

#

And stuff from add-ons

#

I think mine is like 500+ mb

last cedar
#

I have heard that you shouldn't always run the latest version

#

so I guess somewhere around 2 years should be long enough to kill bugs

#

I might update to 2024.4.x soon

#

Actually, story time

#

so I haven't migrated to z2m v2 yet

#

and I have a new MR smlite

#

so I basically need to redo everything, swap to the MR jobbie, hopefully keep all my 68 zigbee devices

#

upgrade z2m and ha

#

the outside lights are painful to re-pair so I really want to avoid that

#

I just haven't had the time to do it, because I really want to start a new machine from scratch running deb 12 or 13

#

and also need to sort my vlans first, so stuff is properly segregated

#

last cedar
#

Also I want to setup a tablet for an overview of all the "critial" house stuff, furnace temps, water flow and return temps, ventillation system, door status etc

last cedar
dawn badge
#

backups also (if you tell them to) container addon data

last cedar
#

can't annoy the internet if you can't get to port 53!

#

that would also explain it, I don't have a single addon

dawn badge
#

my latest couple of backups.

#

gotta keep it below 5gb to use HA-Cloud as a target 🙂

last cedar
#

Stuff actually works fine, it is only my own lazyness that hasn't meant I have progressed, I have 2 VLANS working exactly as inteded right now, and then obviously just when you get comfortable with those, opnsense is going to depreciate the dhcp system and (probably in my case) go over to dnsmasq, and I have even more reading up to do about that

last cedar
dawn badge
#

i kinda wanna rebuild my network. the last time i did it i went a bit overboard with some stuff and maintaining is a bit chaotic

dawn badge
#

for example i have my recorder set to keep full data for 30 days instead of the default of 10.

last cedar
#

That would explain that! I jhave no idea how much mine is keeping
