Holy hell, using a fast cloud LLM provider is really a day and night difference to the default OpenAI integration.
Tested groq (not grok), which is advertising itself as low latency provider with gtp-oss-120b vs OpenAI mit gpt-4.1-mini

OpenAI takes about 8-9 seconds to answer "What temperature will be tomorrow between 1 and 2 pm?"
Groq takes less than 1.5 seconds.

Both used the same tool calls (Weather LLM script by Fes) to get the result.

This is the difference that will make your family allow you to replace Alexa or not. 😛

for me the issue with linux is power management, my laptop would drain battery even while plugged in and running various power mgmt tools

shut crescent
#

That is my worry with DCS, my controllers cost half what my house did. I really spent alot on them

hoary canyon
#

Not to mention I like to mod games occasionally and game mods don't really work well on Linux

shut crescent

My Adobe Premier and Affter effects hates Linux. but I am so sick of Windows

I have a MacBook Air M1 for anything that needs a different OS

shut crescent
thick dragon
#

(Also free)

hoary canyon
#

delayed updates as part of that so generally more stable

#

For a HA server, I do not recommend Windows. Use something like Proxmox IMO

shut crescent
#

funny you say that becuase I am learning Davinci just to get closer to dropping windows

thick dragon
#

Be aware that BlackMagic only officially support Rocky Linux and you might have to do some fiddling to get it to work on anything else.

shut crescent
#

no, I will use a HAOS clean system, no windows. Like a lot of people I have been buying smart bulbs, cameras, for a few years, and have 5 different brands. its hard to keep a single point of control

hoary canyon
#

Would probably need over 50 apps to control everything in totality

shut crescent
#

I was hopping I could take a decent mini computer wipe it, and then a clean install of HAOS, but most of what i read says bad move

hoary canyon
#

That’s fine? I’d recommend going the Proxmox route if you plan to expand your self hosted “arsenal” ever though.

#

Can just install HAOS inside a VM on Proxmox

iron granite
shut crescent
#

thx Blue, that is why im here is to learn before i leap

hoary canyon
#

We were all there at some point.. no worries

shut crescent
#

yea but I have one setting on the shelf

hoary canyon
#

Pretty sure what he means is that just HA OS on a typical Mini PC will leave lots of spare resources in a lot of cases

#

If you use something like Proxmox, you can install various other operating systems and also install “LXC”s for lighter weight software

#

Better to take advantage of your hardware

shut crescent
#

even though it's a new OS to me, the mini PC I understand

#

I will look at Proxmox, i've heard the name but need to learn

hoary canyon
#

just copy and paste the script into the console of Proxmox and you can install various services seamlessly

shut crescent
#

cool, agian thx guys

dusty mica
#

do not use the proxmox post install script though, tempting, but not good for HAOS. The HAOS installer script is good!

#

@shut crescent

hoary canyon
#

I've had no issues with it personally. Does HA have a installer script for Proxmox now?

dusty mica
hoary canyon
#

ah yeah i've used that one before. Also used the post install script and had no issues though..

#

This was probably about 1-2 years ago now though so maybe it's unstable or something now?

dusty mica
#

i was told that the post install script does more harm then good

hoary canyon
#

Never heard that myself, it corrects the proxmox sources to the free ones.. otherwise you won't get updates without paying. Also removes the subscription nag

dusty mica
hoary canyon
#

Interesting, never had that happen myself

#

You can skip over the nag part I believe though

dusty mica

me neither, but Impact knows his stuff

Oh hey, I literally did a ton of research on these fun devices a few weeks ago, trying to find something for offsite backups at my local hacker space. I think they're neat machines, but they barely beat a more modern Raspberry Pi. Depending on your use case, that might be good enough, and you get some extra ports and an Intel CPU.

For a starter Home Lab setup, f you can scrape together ~$100, I would really recommend picking up a used Lenovo ThinkCentre. Specifically one that has a spare PCIe slot. You're going to get a lot more bang for your buck out of them. Or a Dell OptiPlex Micro. Anything 6th or 7th gen or newer would last you for a couple of years, which gives you a good amount of time to learn and figure out what your next machine chould be like.

I appreciate the macro lens on my phone when I'm scanning QR codes on boards at work

ocean oar

We have a fookin' expensive barcode scanner for that. It's designed for warehouse use where you might need to read something that's several levels of pallet racking off the ground, so it can read a 1D barcode the size of a postage stamp from about 6 metres away 😄

Mine is tied into an app on the phone, but annoyingly it doesn't switch automatically into macro mode or have a button to do it. Instead, I need to move my hand in front of the lens for the phone to decide to switch to it

If you have a Bond device you're using to control the RF, I've noticed it randomly seems to send signals to the fan lights... so I ripped out all the RF fans of this house and went with Innovelli Zigbee fan controllers instead. A hassle, but made automation a lot easier too... since with RF repeaters, you don't really know whether the device is on or off, and if the fan light is expecting a "toggle" signal it's hard to reliably ensure it's off.

weak musk
#

Bond was a horrible experience

#

innovelli is flawless

vivid wraith
eternal zinc
#

My only complaint with my Innovelli switches is that I didn't buy more of them LOL.

I had already installed Zooz Z-wave switches for my dimmer switches in the house, so now they're mismatched. I'm not going to spend Innovelli prices just to swap them back but I can't praise them enough.

vivid wraith
#

maybe I start with the fan in my guest bedroom and try to figure it out

weak musk
eternal zinc
#

It's really straightforward if you've ever wired a fan before. Are you thinking fan controller + canopy?

#

(so you don't have to replace the fans)

eternal zinc
#

The Innovelli canopy is the smallest one I've seen before, FWIW, so it's not too bad.

#

Just make sure to bind the wall switch to the canopy before you put the canopy cover back on.

vivid wraith
#

I need two switches, one for light and one for fan?

Do the innovelli wall switches work wired or only via zigbee or whatever?

#

Why are my ceilings so tall 😭

eternal zinc
#

If they are remote controlled fans, you only need one switch and a canopy controller. If they are regular chain fans, you can do two switches or a switch and canopy controller.

#

So you need 2 pieces of hardware either way.

#

Innovelli does Matter, Zigbee, or Z-wave, but the Matter ones don't have as much functionality yet. They have a quiz you can take if you wanna go that route that tells you what hardware to buy.

vivid wraith
#

My fans are remote controlled and I have one switch that turns it on and off, but I have another switch that does nothing so I suspect it used to be a fan switch

#

So it might be wired for it

eternal zinc
#

Yep, probably wired for it... but unfortunately, if the fan is a remote-controlled fan, you can't really use both switches.

#

That'll tell you what to buy based on your setup.

vivid wraith
#

Ah I was hoping maybe the wire would be there and wiring it into the canopy would let me have a fan wall switch

eternal zinc
#

Looks like they discontinued their Red series (Z-wave) so it's Zigbee or Matter now.

eternal zinc

The most important thing is to ensure your fan is not a DC fan. If it is, your automation options become very limited.

Then why are you mucking with Mesolithic cameras at 4 am? Priorities man/sir

Spinny camera that looks like it's from Doctor Who? Get me 10

I'm probably gonna be heading to bed here in a minute anyway

Dalek cam can wait until you wake up

#

Pretty sure they’re bioengineered for that

tawdry yacht
#

I know nothing about them

#

It's difficult for me to fall asleep either way, so me staying up doesn't really make a difference if I can't sleep either way

Wait is that the correct name for it

I don't listen to my GP

Yeah insomnia

I've gotten sidetracked listening to Disturbed now aswell

I am in the same timezone. I have diagnosed sleep conditions though so i guess i have an official excuse 😛

tawdry yacht
#

I'm diagnosed with Insomnia, does that give me an excuse?

#

It's not really a incurable disorder, I just can't sleep hah

#

Guessing on how long it's taking you to type that message, I'm assuming I should shut my mouth

dawn badge
#

I have a "Non-24-hour sleep–wake disorder" so whilst i do sleep the timing of it changes constantly.

tawdry yacht
#

I guess that's kind of the case with me? I just also can't sleep

#

I've not got something like that diagnosed though, so I won't make claims

dawn badge
#

I likely started out as just "Delayed sleep phase disorder" but that progressed to non-24 over time.

tawdry yacht
#

Can I explain how my sleep "pattern" works?

dawn badge
#

the issue with diagnosis is you have to deal with a branch of medicine called neurophysiology which has a lot of quackery in it.

Lets say I'm starting off going to bed at 10pm one night and waking up at 8am, next day It'll be 1am and 11am instead, so on and so forth until I end up back at 10pm to 8am

#

But this is mixed in with the fact I find it difficult to fall asleep so I end up being all over the place with when I actually go to bed

#

Which is why I'm primarily WFH because I am never gonna make it into an office on-time

There’s usually no reason to it

23 skidoo (sometimes 23 skiddoo) is an American slang phrase generally referring to leaving quickly, being forced to leave quickly by someone else, or taking advantage of a propitious opportunity to leave. Popularized during the early 20th century, the exact origin of the phrase is uncertain.
