My download speeds on torrent is capped by drive speeds

hoary canyon
#

Will be nice to have everyone actually using my WiFi 7 APs 🤣

stuck mortar
#

My zwave works fine as long as we don’t bring up the door sensor that decided it didn’t want to rejoin the network after I changed the battery yesterday

hoary canyon
#

Zwave is my favorite protocol personally

#

Been the most reliable for me.. well besides Lutron but that’s more a closed ecosystem

unborn merlin
#

except where its the more expensive option for any sensor and.. still closed source and things behave weird with it at times.. etc.. 😐

hoary canyon
#

sensors I prefer zigbee though

ocean oar
#

Did you look at the size of it through? 😄
I mean it's good news for that putting 40 amps through it isn't going to melt it, but damn

unborn merlin
#

big relays are large.

#

and also the wiring for it

hoary canyon
#

Honeywell/Jasco has some new switches on sale for $25 a unit that are functionally identical to the Zooz switches which is nice

#

Scene control and everything

stuck mortar
#

Can’t remember the source, but I remember seeing a smart relay unit for high current outdoors (like pool pumps) and it’s a chunky boi

unborn merlin
#

my preference for switches goes to shelly stuff

#

either a shelly switch or just putting a shelly behind said switch

#

because... control is mine

hoary canyon
#

I like to do dimming or fan speed control from the switches so that’s out for me mostly. Not to mention I hate non standard light switch buttons

#

I like the zwave ones because they look mostly like normal paddle switches

#

But have all the extra functionality also

unborn merlin
#

i mean you can put the extra features in too...

#

could do it with 3d printer too with more than 1 button if I wanted to.. but y'know.. mains stuff.. insurances.. probably no like and etc.

hoary canyon
#

Like why can’t it just function like a regular paddle haha

#

Confuses the hell out of guests

#

These touch dimmer designs interest me but no HA compatibility is a bummer and they’re WiFi :/

I will be a lutron caseta user till the day i die

my only complaint about Caseta is when you turn it off it just dimms slowly till its off which is just annoyoing bu t

yeah, most sensible dimmer things let you... and get this

unborn merlin
#

also here's an adapter for one..

#

look at the pins.

#

they're sheathed when it could be visible/poked

#

so you functionally cannot have that get shorted or etc.

at least on properly made plugs.

thats because basic reading/thinking skills are in fact independent from phones.

hoary canyon

I feel like if schools actually incorporated modern day technology into lessons we’d have a lot better success rates

umbral cliff

AI might be the push for it

#

Teach them that it can be like spell check, but shouldn't be a replacement

How do yall name your entities, including their IDs? I usually do the room name and then the device and then the entity. HA does like what Apple Home does and removes the device name if it’s the prefix of an entity (Laundry Room Water Detector Sensor -> Sensor, if the parent device is Laundry Room Water Detector).

But this is starting to make really long entity names, which seems annoying to work with. Wondering if I should only use the device name itself as a prefix (Water Detector, which is in the Laundry Room area), and then do the entity ID like binary_sensor.laundry_room.water_detector_sensor

#

That way I’ll know which entity I’m looking at elsewhere in the UI but the display name won’t be so long…

Yeah I am

I don't know of a good guide, but I do remember that it's easier to install Windows first and then Ubuntu

Windows expects to be the only OS, so having one already installed makes things difficult

I've been searching this discord quite a bit and found lots of people who have already-existing motorized blinds that they want to automate with Home Assistant.

But I'm in the unique position where none of my blinds are automated and I'd like them to be, but I'd really want to choose the easiest to automate product on the market. Does anyone have blind suggestions if I'm coming from a blank slate?

Hello! (I don't know which channel I need to use for this)

I created a PR in the ha core repo with a really small change that adds a really good feature.
Everything is ready, but there are still 3 checks pending. (I have limited experience with GitHub checks.)

hybrid dust
#

hey all, i want to get a new router for myself since my one is just an old isp provided one, but i want to make sure the router is good for HA - are mesh routers good to get? i've seen a few deals on them lately that could be good. also does anyone have any recommendations for brands or routers in generals? i'm in aus so may not have access to all the same stuff, but if i have something to look for, i can see what i can find

forest edge
#

as long as it allows you to access the internet and other internal network devices it will be fine for HA

jagged moon
#

If you need to cover a wide area and cant do wiring between APs, do mesh. otherwise, dear god, run from mesh.

hybrid dust
#

even if it's a mesh system? i've never had a mesh system before so just wanted to make sure it'd work if i went that way - i have a bunch of shelly relays running locally but over wifi for HA reasons

jagged moon
#

honestly, I like the old fashoned approach of placing a single decent AP central to the structure

forest edge
#

being mesh has no impact in terms of it working with home assistant

#

mesh is just multiple devices working together to extend range

hybrid dust
#

i have a central point for my current router, but here in aus we can't do our own electrical work/wiring, so if i went with a single thing it'd need to use the current point

jagged moon
#

you can cover a decent radius with a single AP anymore. You'll make less noise for neighboring networks with fewer radios. mesh is inconsiderate IMO

#

really? not even low voltage?

#

you arent feeding mains to anything

hybrid dust
jagged moon
#

dude nothing networking related is done at mains

hybrid dust
#

also i should have mentioned earlier but i also have a zigbee network - not sure if that changaes things because of interference between them?

jagged moon
#

even PoE is safe no matter how bad you screw it up (ask me how I know, hehe)

tidal bronze
#

Run cable CAT5/6, mesh is not ideal. Multi AP is the best way to go.

hybrid dust
#

what are some examples of multi AP setups? i'm not hugely tech savvy when it comes to this side of things so not sure what to look for

tidal bronze
#

I am happy with UniFi. Pick your poison and build up on it.

jagged moon
#

2 rules for networking gear that apply to literally every deployment:

  • if it needs the cloud, it has an expiration date. yeet it into the sun and get something else.
  • you probably dont need the performance you think you do. stability matters. peak wifi speeds arent that important honestly
hybrid dust
#

yeah, for all our HA wifi stuff we've tried to go local where we can for exactly that reason

jagged moon
#

wifi 5 is the oldest I would consider buying. 6 is still fine. 7 is teh fancy

ocean oar
#

I will point out in reference to the second point, there can be a large disparity in speed with mesh systems depending on if you're connected to the root node, or a satellite

#

The one my partner's parents have you can get either ~900Mbps or ~130Mbps depending on where in the mesh you are

jagged moon
tidal bronze
#

Wired backhaul always.

jagged moon
#

mesh systems are good for difficult environments you dont mind making more noise in, like weird condos that have plaster and lathe walls

#

that metal mesh is horrible

#

and on the plaster and lathe buildings, at least up here, they throw metal mesh in everywhere. its a patchwork of RF horrors

#

plus some of those are so old you really dont want to cut into things to run lines since a lot of plaster used asbestos back then around here. I dont know how that is in australia

#

anyways, consider it wifi for boomers

I have a soil sensor that is doing this, do you suppose this is reflecting an actual hydrodynamic phenomenon? 🤔 It's in a potted plant and the sudden rise is me watering it

#

low is 27% peak 83%

#

Like could this be somehow like the glug glug of an upside-down water bottle? 🤔

#

in slow-motion (the horizontal from the watering to the edge is just over a day)

#

If the surrounding downward curve seemed part of one downward line, like, say, in this example, I would be writing it off as sensor error

#

Here are the last 14 days for context

#

Btw this is one of my favourite things about smart home stuff, the chance to observe quirks that you would otherwise not, and wonder about them

I reckon if you put that side by side with a temperature plot you might get your answer

That particular plant has been banished outside due to water breaching four layers of containment to reach the wood floor

Recently joined the Shelly forums to ask a question there. Their are-you-a-robot question is entertaining: they ask you the color of a particular product. Google and DuckDuckGo AI insist said object is white. Going to the product page shows that it is actually blue.

Classic AI. Setting the world on fire to give wrong answers

I imagine they're feeding the wrong answers with something like white-on-white text or something inside comments that only the AI will see.
