I don't much care for rgb's on my PC but my current one is a microcenter prebuilt that has rgb in the fans and cooler. I use it just to display colors associated to cpu temp thresholds. it's not bad to see at a glance but something I could still do without

stuck mortar
#

I built a beefy work computer in the dark days and had no choice other than RGB for the amount of ram I needed (paired kit because I’d had too many problems with trying to use random packs). If I turned off the rgb in windows, booting into Linux caused massive glitches in the color 🫠

This video shows a beautiful "staircase" being "restoration" to its former glory. Watch as the old "hardwood stairs" are brought back to life. The work is a great example of "hardwood flooring" and attention to detail.

Hey all little bit confused as to where to post a problem. If you could direct me that would be great. Or if there's anyone that can help me out personally I would be forever grateful.
I'm having an issue where my voice assistant will not turn on certain lights because it can't " find them" as an entity. Even though I can clearly see it is an entity and it's entity ID is exactly what I'm calling it. I have changed the name from cabinet lights to counter lights but I insured. I updated the ID.
Is there anyone that can help me out? It's becoming a little frustrating. I forgot to mention that they are enabled and they are exposed to my voice assistant.

I just want to say a massive thank you to @midnight verge for their constant effort on the Alexa Devices integration over the past several months.
Amazon have made constant changes to their API which has made the integration fail on average once a month. Simone has rolled with the punches and dropped updates as quickly as they can be deployed. Last month he even went so far as to push a patch to HACS to get people back up and running while waiting for the next milestone release.
This is the effort that open source projects are built on and this integration makes an enormous impact on my life as well as many other users. (He also graciously puts up with the stream of “same here” comments on GitHub!)
Thank you Simone!

A pi 5 is $85 on sale, normally $100. You can get an i5-6500T Mini PC for around $50-70 shipped and ready to go. You can get an i5-8500T Mini PC for around $100 shipped- both have almost double the performance of a Pi and aren't restricted to ARM compatible software.

The Pi may draw slightly less power but many of the mini PCs max out at around 35 watts with much lower idle usage

I had to open up my laptop because I heard something tiny rattling around inside (a clip for the bottom cover broke off as I suspected). While I was in there I realized I pulled the WiFi 6 wireless card from the new server I just bought (to put in a Coral), so I replaced my laptop's WiFi 5 card with the one from the server and now I'm happy lol

I don’t know that I pay much attention to the frequency, so I’ll check tomorrow when in my office. But at home I had issues when logged into my work’s Citrix desktop with major lag at times. I was using an anker USB-C to hdmi. Home was the only place that saw this issue. At work I have an even bigger monitor and it was fine when connected to my Citrix desktop, with the monitor connected over hdmi from a Caldigit thunderbolt 3 dock. Solve at home by moving to a ugreen thunderbolt 4 dock.

I'm sure you guys got a good Linux distro for doing touchscreen HA
suggestions?

unborn merlin
#

having GPIO; and having simple access to that GPIO does not mean its going to work as you think

#

also. probaly not GPIO

#

and even if it was.. good luck with random hardware without documentation! 😄

rich ruin

and also that

#

this was a medical device so totally possible it's gpio

#

docs aren't common though, think I found some years ago, when I looked again recently I found shit

#

even if it doesn't work, as long as the touchscreen does on linux, and wifi I'm happy

#

even if wifi doesn't work I'm considering doing POE for it anyway

#

but yeah no I didn't think I was just gonna boot this up and use it like a pi without a bunch of effort lol

medical gear

#

although seriously I dunno wtf this would've interfaced with or controlled

#

not really a convenient way to access any of these from the chassis tbh

#

there were like 2mm thick plates that had to be removed to even get inside the thing

#

each of those holes had like 2mm thick block off plates
bent the shit out of them just trying to get them out even haha
and wasn't just support for mounting or anything they were meant to come out for cables and stuff just insane how thick they and their tabs were

#

so much random stuff on this board
big power headers
sata ports
serial for days
bunch of random jumpers
cables that barely look better than jumper cables for lcd stuff
headers and more headers

#

tpm port (v1)

#

oh shit
I think this thing might have a built in charger too
it has a internal dc port, which looks like it'd be used for a battery

#

there's a port just labelled pwm

#

it even has an x1 pcie slot wth
I don't even understand how you'd even use half of this in this chassis
although I suppose this board must've been used in other stuff haha

#

great and those screws are too small lmao

#

but yeah was really hoping there was something easy/standard that's used for a quick kiosk mode install for ha?
any time I've done this before I've just done my own based off deb

unborn merlin
#

most kiosk stuff I'm aware of tends to use things like android for fullykiosk or etc

i'm sure theres a linux one but I'm not aware of it.

unborn merlin

rich ruin

why does it look like there's an input switcher
there is an hdmi and vga port
but I assumed just output
will have to investigate

#

and yeah that feature is odd
especially on a medical device
maybe there's another use for it
never seen that on a consumer device lol

#

almost as sketchy as IME

#

was almost gonna netboot this thing but if the ssd works then eh

#

vertical viewing angle suuuuuucks
surprsied that part isn't good considering where it's from

#

hmm front buttons seem to be all sw not fw
which sucks dunno if they'll ever work without specific drivers for windows7 embedded

#

actuall all viewing angles suck dang
maybe better if I can get the brightness up but who knows if that'll ever happen

unborn merlin
#

is it worth all this effort?

.... probably not.

rich ruin
#

lol definitely not

#

just messing aroud for fun

#

tbh finding an old tablet and trying to make it boot would probably be infinitely better
smaller
thinner
better resolution
bricked it when trying to root it last try though
like it just died, doesn't even do shit now which is odd
dunno might have another tho
super old though (tab s1 and s2) so dunno if HA app would work
or what browser version might

#

my gfs old laptop is also touch screen but that thing is a weird amd apu and it's evil
though linux might be okay on it
but I'd have to like
rip it apart and build a custom enclosure to make it a wallmount affair lol

#

these serial ports do rs232, rs422 and rs485 apparently though

#

oh just com1 does

#

weird

#

has a CIR controller

#

I can't even get my gf to open the app to do shit though
bout to swap the thermostat onto ha
having something on the wall would probably help

unborn merlin
#

I mean.

ideally.. you should never have to touch the thermostat

rich ruin
#

lol exactly

#

that too

#

we have radiant heat
and a dumb t-stat
that is super far from any of the radiators
and is basically broken
sucks bad

#

after this, unless I specifically want warmer or colder for some reason, it should just stay at the temp I set even in summer will turn on the smart plug for the ac

#

ugh deb is taking forever to copy to this usb

unborn merlin
#

I mean.

at least ones with remote sensors

#

i have the pcbs made already

rich ruin
#

yeah I'm not that far

unborn merlin
#

well, its more of a controller that goes on the air handler and controls that side and etc.. but remote sensors make it work

#

I just have to..

... get off my ass and fucking finish soldering the beta boards

#

🙃

rich ruin
#

got the power figured out (solenoid uses 24vac to turn on, and, somehow there's a 3rd return wire in the wall behind the tstat even though it was always dumb, so yay)
got a solid state relay on the way
got esp32
got some sensors

#

although my pm2.5 I'm worried either it didn't come with a cable or I lost it

#

and the pin pitch is small

unborn merlin
#

that board is..

rich ruin
#

looks nice

#

then I'll put it all on some perf board and test
if I like it maybe I'll make a board

unborn merlin
#

8x ssr, 4x optocoupler inputs for 24VAC signals; leds.. i2c; onewire.. etc

rich ruin
#

or maybe I'll just use yours lmao

unborn merlin
#

canbus for future thoughts

#

since I madea this for a guys house stuff

#

and he wants smart vents.. so.. canbus smartvents probably

rich ruin
#

I just need 24vac power
24vac switched

#

and some IO for sensors

unborn merlin
#

that's the fun part!

#

i tried using a shelly that said it can handle 24VAC

#

...

It was actually 28VAC coming out of the traansformer

#

so it blew up some of the diodes on the shelly

#

because of course.

rich ruin
#

I got one of these for 2.5

#

oh shit yeah mine is like 28vac or so

#

but my module says it can do upto 30v

unborn merlin
#

my first v1 boards were... dubious becuase my dumb ass used the wrong power circuit (an LDO) instead of a proper buck circuit

rich ruin
#

eh that's how you learn

unborn merlin
#

oh yeah.. also 4 button inputs too

#

that could be repurposed.

rich ruin
#

nice

unborn merlin
#

by cutting traces/or removing the pullup resistors

rich ruin
#

yeah I gotta find the cable for that sensor if I got one looks like they do come with them kinda pissed the bag I had it in had a hole lol

#

oh the pic I showed isn't even the same, similar but bigger one with diff pins

unborn merlin

i do regret my choice of connectors tho

super-generic chinese relays.. I don't really trust around mains tbh

especially s most of those when used for their actual higher voltages really do require a heatsink for proper usage at any reasonable wattage.

#

and it's all heat wrapped and on a pigtail connector

#

though it says this
UPDATE 10 Jun 2023: As of Debian 12 (Bookworm), firmware is included in the normal Debian installer images. USERS NO LONGER NEED TO LOOK FOR SPECIAL VERSIONS HERE. online lmao

wth then why is it whining

not that it seems to be documented very well other than implying new isos should have it

shrug lets try the net install iso
