A question for regular users here-
I havs used Home Assistant for 4 years or so now and have a fairly extensive setup including haos servers at 3 sites (home/work/parents). Since I also "roll my own" devices, I do a lot of posting/reading on esphome's discord server. I also come by here and.. I just don't get as "drawn in" here if that makes sense. I post rarely here and also dont spend as much time reading folks questions to see if I could possibly help.. I was musing a bit as to why that is. Im thinking it kinda feels like the "threaded" approach used in the esphome server tends to keep me reading whereas the individual .. uhm.. forums? chats? (Not sure what its called) method used here just seems more "opaque" to me.. any suggestions on how you folks typically visit here and methods you use to participats/contribute most effectively..? πŸ€”

forest edge
#

to long to read, sorry

#

if I wanted to settle into a novel I wouldn't have come to OT

static schooner
#

hard to see how threads are different from posts in that regard

ember heart
ember heart
static schooner
#

I don't contribute much on the ESPHome server. I just see a lot of messages asking people to follow the rules and not post logs and such in the main channel and to create threads

#

in other words, they want people to create threads, and we expect people to create posts here. 🀷

#

they have much less traffic overall

ember heart
#

Yeah.. really ought yo have a bot for that.. that said tho, i tend to go through almost all the threads.. do you go through all the.. posts? What is it called they use here?

static schooner
#

I read the titles and see how many replies they have

ember heart
#

I guess it could be the larger user base here.. as u said, they do have less traffic..

static schooner
#

that's usually enough to decide if it's worth going further

#

I know nothing about Ring devices and there are already 6 replies. Moving on...

ember heart
#

Heh all i know about ring is i unistalled all mine and replaced with non cloud/subscription devices lol

#

I guess i see your approach.. i should try it out. Thx πŸ™‚

warm helm
#

I am over here looking at solar generators and panels right now

ember heart
#

static schooner
#

you should just reply

I have nowhere to put a rack in the house that wouldn't deafen everyone here.

ember heart
#

I had my first unraid server in the master closet in a fractal r6 case.. with the door shut it wasnt loud but it raised the temperature in the closet a LOT. I had to move it somewhere cooler

gusty belfry
#

I have louvered closet doors and zip tied 140mm fans to them and powered them via USB. Stays cool and the R7 is happy enough. all the drives stay below 45c

#

The entire system with networking is around 220w

ember heart
#

Heh.. mine grew a smidge since then.. three 24 bay nas cases.. two threadrippers, one old intel dual zeon, and about 1/2 a petabyte of spinning rust 😬 πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ 🀦

#

Unraid jbod is addictive.. u can just keep on plugging in drives! πŸ˜ƒ

gusty belfry

That's one benefit of TrueNAS. You gotta NEED more storage, not just want it.

ember heart
#

And in the server closet, no one can hear the fans scream! 🀣

I have a while before I need more, which is good because drive prices are going insane.

I can about double my movie library before I need to worry.

I think you'll get this with any AI model really, but giving it a strict protocol/criteria to follow upfront helps, but maybe even temporarily swapping to different models if you notice it is hallucinating. I was getting a lot of hallucinations today but swapped to another LLM and got what I needed fairly quickly. DuckDuckGo runs/proxies a few LLM's so you can swap between a few on their site until you get the desired results.

# forest edge the tuxedo twins was really not bad

If you don't look too hard. It's one of those things that really bugs me, and I know I'm not the only person.
Like the colour fringing on projectors, once it has been seen it cannot be unseen.
In that case, it was the top and bottom incisor teeth merging with each other, and the bottom jaw moving at an angle relative to the top.
TBH though almost the worst part is how out of sync the audio and the video are, the laughing animation preceding the sound by almost a second in places is almost as "literally unwatchable" as the AI images themselves.

forest edge
#

well it's not going to be perfect not for as cheap as it is to make lol but the only time I judge the appearance of AI is when someone tries to use to it make like a movie or something or to intentionally try and fool people in a negative way. but for pure creativity I don't mind it one bit. you can write short stories all day long on paper but actually putting graphics that are better than 2d or some horrible attempt at some photoshop slide show to those short stories make them all the better

I'm flashing the extras as routers.

They're really good low profile routers. I have four thirdreality night light routers arriving today too, but not everywhere I want a router can handle one of those.

forest edge
#

right and anything less than perfect square would be shorter lol

#

well unless your house is super narrow

atomic delta
#

IIRC garage isn't included in the square footage, and I'm also reaching to the end of that. And it's more of a rectangle, with me in the front corner.

#

Pretty sure it's over 100' wide though. Not sure on exact dimensions, though I could pull out the blueprints if I cared enough (I don't).

forest edge
#

if your cordinator is one of these smlites with an external decent antenna it's reach even through walls should be pretty decent. mine reach 100+ feet through 2 interior walls and solid outter concrete wall

#

for example

atomic delta
#

Yeah, it's one of the SLZB-07s. Bear in mind though that AC power runs are more disrupting to signal than walls.

#

Just tends to get rolled together because those are usually in the walls.

#

I did just yank out all but one of my tuya routers though, they were all garbage. All but that one anyway. I have no idea why that one was different, but it was a different model entirely. Had a button, registers a motion sensor that doesn't exist in HA.

forest edge
#

my point is you shouldn't need anymore than 1 router to extend your reach

#

if we were talking about the smart plugs as routers then yea, i could see needing more but you are not.. you are using monsters lol

#

@subtle pulsar does the hacs for flair that you made need phone home support to function with a flair server?

#

After setup.

atomic delta
# forest edge if we were talking about the smart plugs as routers then yea, i could see needin...

Bear in mind that the end node needs to be able to communicate back as well. Coordinators flashed as routers are good for long-range extensions from the coordinator itself, but the devices able to be reached by it are in a shorter range because they may have shitty broadcast strength. And the place where I'm struggling to reach the most is loaded up with eWeLink bulbs (which I do NOT recommend). May just buy more ThirdReality replacements and swap them all out, they're terrible.

forest edge
#

if your issue is wifi interference then switch the bulbs to zigbee lol

atomic delta
#

The bulbs are zigbee

forest edge
#

then why did you mention them?

atomic delta
#

Because I'm talking about getting a zigbee signal across the house?

forest edge
#

are they themselves not act as routers?

atomic delta
#

Haaaaaaaaaaa

#

eWeLink bulbs are basically rebranded Tuya. But like... wifi Tuya quality.

forest edge
#

I have some tuya zigbee.. i have no issues

#

it's the only tuya that can be ok lol

atomic delta
#

Tuya zigbee is good, BUT:

  • You may have to pair them half a dozen times before they start working reliably
  • Everything requires quirks baked in, so anything new has a waiting period
  • (Standalone) routers are useless
forest edge
#

I didn't have any of those issues

#

so not sure what you bought lol

#

are those the devices you are trying to "reach" with these routers?

atomic delta
#

The second you did, you just didn't notice it. It's baked into ZHA/Z2M. Tuya breaks spec impressively.

#

Third you probably didn't buy, because they're generally a dumb idea anyway.

atomic delta
#

The first is mostly an issue with the temp+humidity sensors in my experience. They just stop reporting within a few minutes of pairing, so you re-pair, or reconfigure... half a dozen times.

#

And then they're reliable as shit once they start working at all

forest edge
#

the only issue device I have is a zigbee ikea motion sensor. sometimes it works, sometimes it's delayed, sometimes it don't work. it's located in the middle of a mesh that works perfectrly so I know it's the device and not my mesh

#

that may be what you are experincing as well

#

in my case, no amount of routers at any range would solve the problem lol

atomic delta
#

So yeah, don't buy those. Bad idea.

#

I'm probably going to rip them all out and throw them all away.

forest edge
#

return 2 of your slzb's and keep just the one extra and get better bulbs lol

atomic delta
#

I only have three total. One coordinator, one openthread border router, and one zigbee router.

#

I'm decently content with that trio.

forest edge
#

perfect. return the one you have issues with and presto

atomic delta
#

That's the openthread border router, which now refuses to reflash, but it works fine as a border router apparently, so... fuck it?

forest edge
#

seems silly to buy one of those just to run something other than the factory firmware to me

atomic delta
#

Eh, I mostly wanted to replace the one I migrated to, because the migration was keeping HA from recognizing it properly to offer firmware updates.

#

It wasn't a big issue.

#

But again, they're $30 each, they're not exactly breaking the bank. It's not like the $65 or so PoE-enabled ones.

#

Besides, people keep pestering me to consider thread, maybe now I have a reason to.

forest edge
#

gluten for punishment huh

atomic delta
#

Though now I guess I have to figure out wtf matter is and if I have to care.

forest edge
#

meh matter isn't anything to be excited about

atomic delta
#

Still, I need to know if a "matter over thread" device is going to be supported by what I have.

#

Which... looks like yes?

forest edge
#

according to @fathom sparrow matter over thread is the bee's knee's

atomic delta
#

From what I can tell, if I just use thread devices I'm golden, if I use matter devices I'm golden once I install the matter addon. Now I just have to find something worth caring about that isn't available as zigbee/zwave. Or wifi, I suppose.

#

Looked into the rfid cat doors today. Just about laughed myself out of the room at what I found. That sector needs a real competitor, because my choices are "wifi enabled and overpriced with an oversized proprietary collar that uses overpriced proprietary batteries" or "RFID and cheap with no device connectivity and glaring flaws".

#

Though the biggest flaw I found is one that I don't think any of them can fix. They all unlock the door for like... 15 seconds. I want that shit to lock the instant it swings shut behind the cat, because my usecase involves another asshole cat chasing him through it.

forest edge
#

so build your own

atomic delta
#

Yeah... the thought crossed my mind. Especially since it's a sector where I could probably sell them if I wanted to.

#

Honestly, if I could set it up so anyone could go out but only he could come in, and have it log when the door swung and which way it swung, that would be perfect.

Found another smart one. It has all the hardware for it, but doesn't allow setting lock state separately per-pet. So still useless. -.-

forest edge
#

you are not going to find one that suits your exact situation of cutting off a neighbors cat in hot pursuit

#

realistically that wouldn't even be safe

#

and could lead to the neighbors cat getting hurt

atomic delta
#

Sadly, our own cat. We took in two cats from someone who couldn't care for them and one of them is... well, an asshole.

forest edge
#

people like me would just tell you to stop letting your cat go outside.. problem solved

atomic delta
#

Yeah, this is for use inside the house to restrict the asshole from a couple rooms.

#

So the one he keeps fighting with doesn't have to deal with him

forest edge
#

well in those situations it's best just to keep them seperated at all times

#

trade out access throughout the day

atomic delta
#

I live in the northern Nevada high desert. You can't let cats outside here. I had one I let out because she was smart enough to not get caught by a coyote. So an owl got her.

It feels both weird and cool to have to have done this... but my garage computer doesn't have HDMI-CEC support and I use a TV as the monitor. So, instead of simply pressing a power button or buying a USB-CEC dongle... I finally installed the macOS companion app and added the TV to HA so I can power on the TV when the computer wakes. It does make ya wonder why CEC isn't more widely supported on computers.

Guys, we need to talk.

I’ve been a developer for more than 15 years, and I’ve always made it an article of faith to give back to any community I'm part of as much as I can. Since I came here to the discord, I've tried to help support others as soon as I found my footing.

Today, I found what I believe is a bug in the UI for input booleans. I brought it up in one of the dev channels, fully prepared to help diagnose and fix it. I was told it wasn’t the right placeβ€”fair enough. However, when I argued my case, SOMEBODY took it on themselves to lock me out of all the dev channels altogether, with not even an explanation.

That’s not how healthy communities work. I don’t mind being told I’m wrong, or redirected to a better venue. But contributors shouldn’t be snubbed in this way for making their case in good faith. That comes across as elitist and bureaucratic, and it makes me question whether this is a community worth investing in.

This is not a one-time occurrence either. I've been bluntly brushed off before, if not in such a blatant manner. The reorganization of the discord server also came with regular blunt slapdowns for those who got the - frankly extremely byzantine - system wrong.

I had two PRs all but ready to submit, but after this experience, I don't think I will send them just yet. Open source is supposed to be about collaboration, not gatekeeping, and I’m not interested in donating my time and energy to a community that responds to good-faith discussion by slamming the door.

I’m posting this as a reminder: projects rise or fall on their communities. Without its community and its contributors, an open source project is nothing but a useless lump of code.

I hope these words don't fall on deaf ears. I'm fully open to re-invest myself in the community if and when I see a noticeable change, or at the very least, a meaningful discussion of viable solutions. But for now, I chose to become a silent observer and see how my points are received.

Ultimately you posted in the wrong place. #developers is for Developers (people who are actively updating code, building integrations, etc)β€” what you posted looks like a support request or a bug report, neither of which are appropriate for developer channels. If you wanted support from the community to see if anyone had a work around for the helper issue you posted it should have been posted in #1284966582375813201 if you wanted to report a bug, choose the appropriate bug submission link here: https://www.home-assistant.io/help

@forest edge thinking of you....

lone dagger

# primal laurel what?

I have just been removed from that role by duly appointed authority. Be it rightfully or not is beside the point. If I tried to reassign the role to me, what do you think how the afforementioned duly appointed authority would react? And let me reiterate: they would be fully justified by my actions.

primal laurel
lone dagger
# wraith pier I have just been removed from that role by duly appointed authority. Be it right...

The role was removed because everything you have posted in the developer's support section are not developer support questions. That isn't a space where you go to get help directly from the developers, it's where developers ask questions about the code while they are working on the project or a custom project.

You were posting support questions. Those belong in the community support section. The developers do keep an eye on that space because that's where users report issues that aren't on GitHub.

You are more than welcome to reassign yourself the role as long as you use the space as it is intended. I encourage y'all to take part in convos in #1346914401508392980 this way. Just don't use their support section for reporting issues with the product.
