if you want proper tools you are talking dewalt, makita, milwaukee...

Also known as Milwaukee's cheaper cousin. Made by the same manufacturer.

#

The oldest Ryobi OnePlus tool in my possession is a leaf blower. But I also now own a string trimmer/edger, a polesaw, a circular saw, a drill, flashlight, and a 1/2" drive impact wrench. Along with 6 batteries and 4 chargers.

You can still use HomeKit for the voice

#

(I do)

stuck anchor
#

i don't really use the voice stuff in ha. i do use google assistant and have some devices exposed there, but i have never become a great fan of voice commands

still kiln
#

Fair lemme rephrase my question then

still kiln
weak musk
#

I only use HomeKit for voice. Everything is controlled inside of HA

weak musk
#

We literally only use a VA to trigger our bedtime automation.

#

The rest happens seamlessly without user interaction

#

Oh that’s the other thing. We have in wall speakers for music throughout the house + WiiM amps that we can control with HomeKit. We don’t use smart speakers.

#

Fully agree

still kiln
#

Metal is fun, but yeah def not for just playing around the house

#

While gaming it's a huge W tho

#

as for dashboards, is there a recommended device?

#

I was planning to juse use Ipads all around the house but that feels wasteful

#

I assume OLED is bad for dashboards?

#

So you're anti voice and anti dashboard

#

pro automations?

clear ferry
#

I have used dashboard of HA for probably 2 months total as my kitchen mounted wall screen, other than that I never see the HA dashboard, although recently I've started making the automations in the UI, but that is after 7 years of using HA

#

I prefer notifications via telegram, only thing I used the dashboard for was calendar and trash pickup really, but trash pickup has moved to notifications

#

So now I just need to wall mount a tablet for calendars

#

Swipe gone? I still have years of telegram history from ha

still kiln
#

Telegram like the messaging app?

clear ferry
#

Yes

dawn badge
#

I have some stuff logged to slack

still kiln
#

So you're sending messages via telegram to your phone and using that for notifications?

clear ferry
#

Yes

#

They can even be interactive if you want

#

And you can query your HA instance

random agate
#

I'm still stubbornly using Pushover for notifications. I'm actually not sure why I am, other than that I've used it in HA since day 1 because I used it at work for years before for production alerts and I was used to the sounds it made 🙂

#

I push Mrs Daern's notifications out via the app, so TBH there's not much reason for me to not do the same for myself too. Interactive notifications would be be useful too (I don't believe this is possible on Pushover, but I've not really looked into it much).

I just like ubiquiti for my setup cause they have a large following so if anything goes wrong they have a huge discord server and if not, their support is actually pretty solid. Plus ur right, part of the appeal of ubiquiti is how easy it is to understand, the quality of their products I can't really speak on but I haven't heard too many bad things about them?

For a home router appliance, I'd also consider a generic N100 / N305 box with OpnSense on it, assuming you are comfortable with the setup. Been impressed with the performance, stability and general usability of it, even compared to something like Mikrotik. Obviously a slightly higher entry point from a complexity point of view, but it's nothing too hard in reality. Good for the wallet too 🙂

I've been running *sense for 21 years now

Switched from pf to opn in 2018 because of pfsense questionable state

OpnSense lives nicely with Proxmox too, if virtualisation is your thing. Even a relatively modest box can become quite a capable home router / server without too much complexity involved. Good support community around OpnSense too, which helps.

# still kiln Disregarding cost, why is it better than something from ubiquiti? I wish I had t...

Cheaper (you can't disregard that!), will never be obsoleted (OPNsense will keep going, or some other fork will take over in its place), no significantly limits on functionality - it just works. And, even with relatively modest performing hardware, it's fast. My old N5105 (pretty archaic hardware now) could easily saturate 2.5Gb internet while barely tickling the CPUs. The current N305 hardware is really overpowered, but I run other stuff on it too, so that's ok. Each to their own, TBH, and if you're not confident with your networking / IT skills, perhaps a more standardised product will suit better, but OPNSense is a pretty good option for a software firewall appliance.

#

@warm helm IME, most iSeries machines IPL at least once per week anyway (effectively a reboot), so they're usually quite reliable at reboots. green uses about 1W

dawn badge

dawn badge

there was a thing a couple of months ago i think. sec

#

no idea how well it worked but someone got the ui loaded

shut magnet
#

yeah wiiu has better (although old) support for a browser , sadly the switchs native limited browser was only designed for wifi logins hotels etc... we enable the connection to this via our DNS but we have had to incorporate several polyfills to cater for this and still its limited..

#

pain in the ass tbh

dawn badge
#

you could homebrew an native app that uses the HA API if you wanted maybe? i dont know anything about dev for them

#

depends how deep you want to go

shut magnet
#

i/ our team could do the hard yards from a console perspective.. like i say im new to HA and have really only got as far as collating all my devices with no automations etc... its a brilliant system so far.. really getting excited by the possibilites

#

not sure what im thinking about really just like i say curious whats out there and what may be possible.

#

a side note from a more realistic perspective what would be the goto for a tablet like wall mount experience using HA

#

just any old generic tablet ? or do you guys recommend something more ?

#

oh , im open to options what do you suggest

#

you lost m,e real quick there

#

im referring to a UI for the general viewing of my dashboard and simple switching of device by my family etc...

dawn badge
#

for a dashboard tablet then a cheap android tablet and run fully kiosk on it works well.
but as others say, unless you really need to show information then its not what you want.
having automations to automagic stuff and normal switches that trigger stuff is ususally better

shut magnet
#

yeah i want both , i want the automations , but also manual overides and simple things spotify stuff , life360 info etc.. i get i can just automate stuff but having the visual interface appeals to me

#

fwiw im an electrician and have it all sonoffed anyways .. lol

i use wall mounted (not in electrical boxes, just mounted on the wall) zigbee switches for lights for manual override. looks familiar and anyone can use them instinctively. but they are seldom used since lights come and go automagically.

shut magnet
#

yeah automation is one thing but for that to be the only time you need lights on etc isnt alwys the requirement.. you cannot cater for all scenarios and having overrides is thing for our house at least

#

well i have them in the ceiling behind the lights .. no switches / blanked them off..

#

all done currenly via alexa

#

i could yeah , just gotten used no not needing them

I was somewhat surprised, one of the local cinemas that used to have that problem (less the picture, but definitely turning up the volume to the point of clipping) seemed to have fixed it.

Hi everyone. I am rather new to HA and very new to this plaza.

#

I would like pull data recorded by homeassistant and for processing, statistics, printed reports. So, I guess, I would like to build on either the history integration or the recorder integration. However, I don't know if I should create a custom integration or an add-on, and in turn I don't know in which channel to ask. So, i thought, maybe the water cooler crowed would point me in the right direction. 🙂

solar zealot
#

If this is about building your addon or integration #developers is the place

#developers is read-only.
You can go to id:customize and select "I want to contribute dev skills to Home Assistant". That gives you the Developer role and access to the support channels for devs.

from influxdb you can easily pull data into grafana, also available as an add-on

random agate
#

A quick, slightly vague question - there is a broken core integration with a well-tested fix, but sadly the only person with permissions to merge the update hasn't responded and thus the fix missed today's patch release. What's the correct process to get someone else to step in and merge it?

Huh. I dunno. My home Internet is currently out, so I can't remote access my home assistant at the moment to see how my weather radio is listed, I just know it is, because I use it in a morning automation. Didn't realise how easy it would be to get GPT/Gemini/etc to recognise number plates (license plates) from a camera snapshot. I just told it to briefly describe what it sees and then take it's best guess at the number plate and tell me how confident it is. This is with no lights on so quite dark and it got 6/7 characters with "medium" confidence. With my outdoor light on it got all 7 letters and assigned itself high confidence

With a bit of tinkering and good light I think it could be a pretty reliable number plate logger

That example was with Gemini but GPT works pretty well too, haven't really experimented to see which was best because I realised GPT doesn't have a proper free tier (unless I've missed something) so I switched to Gemini

they made this entire video, only to realize at the end that PCB substrate is basically a thermal insulator

The cooling of the Apollo 8000 was always pretty cool to me, direct copper plates that connect when the server is inserted into the rack

#

We are doing some interesting stuff these days with closed loop inside the server, which has copper contacts that exchange with external water through another closed loop

That isn't the exhaust, since there is no fans

#

It's the water outlet from the server

#

Or to be fair, there are fans, but they are only there for the nvme and io cards usually

Memory, CPUs, GPUs and other interesting stuff has DLC

we have seen instances where servers with low cpu temps and variable fan speeds getting higher sfp failure rates. probably because the lowered fan speed means the servers across the isle can blast them. we don't see the same on low temp servers where fan speed is set to max, so we are now setting all servers to full blast to check the theory. it will take some time to get data of course.

so if water cooling leads to less fan activity you may want to use ducts to create a bubble around sfp's to protect them from their neighbors across the street

I really haven't seen SFP failure in NICs since around 2008 with the first gen 10g stuff

They probably expected it not to work great tbf, they're more in the business of making content than doing cooling R&D

They also ice-water-cooled a MacBook Air, and clearly they didn't expect that to be practical https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MlOPPuNv4Ec

way back in the eighties some bbc model b's had a problem with the psu overheating. for those affected the easy fix was to keep a bottle of water in the fridge and set it on the computer for extended periods of work. earliest water cooling i know about

Educational as well not educational exclusively. I'd interpret that as "some educational videos, some fun videos, try to incorporate elements of each into the other" rather than every video having to be educational

And there is some educational value in there - you may already know that a PCB is an insualtor, but for a lot of people that would've been new information

I think you're just not accounting for the fact you're probably overqualified for the level the channel is pitched at - it's aimed at average joe, not people who are wiring their house into a smart home and probably have a good understanding of tech stuff already
