its ok. as i said you all just like to overinflate things.. you probably like seeing negative numbers more often

Quite funny that from 2022 I can find news articles both about how american airlines struggle with 5g tech and fears of disruptions while in the eu they were getting ready to allow 5g cells in the planes to enable full 5g and wifi connectivity while in the air. ๐Ÿ˜„

forest edge

mythbusters already tackled that. older cell phones most certianly did have an impact on airplane instruments (even some chinese newer phones) but not most modren cell phones

exactly where does the temperature change from being non-ambient to ambient? And do you use K in that twilight zone between C and F?

I had a great idea of how to convince Americans that Farenheit is nonsense, but converting them to a similar system of humidity.
You wanna claim that ยฐF has got better precision in the range where people live and that's why it's better?
Well 30-80% humidity is also the "human" range, so those are your new 0-100 range and everything is scaled appropriately.
Guess what? It's -14% humidity today, and in summer Tuesday it's gonna be 108%.
Enjoy. It's mandatory.

forest edge
#

mixing temp and humidity.. sounds like a foreigner concept

#

I rather like that humidity from 30-50% is the ideal range.. it makes sense. wouldn't change that

forest edge
stuck anchor
# unborn merlin "Metric, but with extra dumb steps."

they had to do something to standardize. the units of measurement had been so different from country to country, as well as changed over time. like the norwegian version of a cubit (alen) that has varied between 47.4 and 63.26 cm. then it was defined as a metric based unit of 60cm in 1875, and still redefined as 24 inches/60.96cm in 1959. which is an even more roundabout way of defining it on metric standard, as that would be based on the metric based inch. ๐Ÿ˜„

forest edge
#

why metric is dumb.. everyone has their own version.. only one imperial. people should switch for more uniformity

stuck anchor
#

i'll have 3 barleycorns of that pudding.

primal laurel
#

There's multiple versions of metric? TIL

stuck anchor
#

only one metric. or - there have been some very slight changes. mostly in the definition, but not changing the units. like a metre has been redefined from one reference ruler to a number of wavelengths of the light from a particular transition of krypton to a fraction of the speed of light.

forest edge
#

I will say I would have hated switching to meteric when I was younger

#

doing anything with building using metric is a pain

stuck anchor
#

imperial units are so practical. the yard is officially defined as 0.9144 metres. very handy in calculations.

primal laurel
forest edge
#

bad enough I have to have one set of imperial wrenches and one set of metric lol

primal laurel
#

sonoma is like the american stereotype. Very funny to see

forest edge
stuck anchor
#

a colleague of mine studied engineering in the us. he said everyone in his class thought he was so smart, since he was always fastest with the calculations. his secret weapon was to convert all inputs to metric and use formulas without umpteen extra steps to compensate for incompatible units. then convert back to imperial afterwards

Even scientific Americans agree metric is better

stuck anchor
#

and all the regulations you have to conform to are in metric units

forest edge
#

one thing many of you non americans don't realize is we have to use just as much metric as imperial in a whole lot of things

abstract verge
#

We do about 100 conversions a day on site

#

In metric they take half a second, Imperial objectively takes longer

We also build houses instead of cardboard boxes...

you don't understand both sides so you just defend your own

primal laurel

there are no sides to this

forest edge
#

we had to straddle the line using both since birth

#

metric is fine for some areas, imperial trumps it in others

it really is as simple as that

primal laurel

there is an answer. But changing it now would be too much work for you

forest edge

Imperial is like "the king woke up with his cock on the left side, today one mile is 1257 of his feet!"

abstract verge
forest edge
#

just because some units were internationalized dosen't make one system based off the other lol

abstract verge
#

Unless you can prove me wrong

forest edge

read what i said above

abstract verge
#

Read what I said

#

It is based off metric

forest edge
#

imperial is not based off metric

#

and you think i'm ignorant?

abstract verge
#

From: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foot_(unit)
"Since an international agreement in 1959, the foot is defined as equal to exactly 0.3048 meters"

The foot (standard symbol: ft) is a unit of length in the British imperial and United States customary systems of measurement. The prime symbol, โ€ฒ, is commonly used to represent the foot. In both customary and imperial units, one foot comprises 12 inches, and one yard comprises three feet. Since an international agreement in 1959, the foot is d...

#

The literal DEFINITION of imperial

#

Is

#

metric

forest edge
#

yes there was a internatial measurement established

#

how does that make one based off the other?

abstract verge
forest edge
#

in what world are you living in

abstract verge
#

An inch used to be based on three grains of barley

#

Now it is based on metric

#

Please read man...

clear ferry

there is a reason why NASA uses metric, just saying

abstract verge

So unless you're arguing a system of measurement the population of ONE country decided to use is somehow "international", imperial is definitely based on metric

#

You know one of the most powerful things a man can learn is to admit he's wrong ๐Ÿ˜ƒ just saying

forest edge

now it's time to crack on silly scottish skirts...

loud pike
#

To be fair, silly scottish skirts are British, not Scottish.

#

The Plaid(Which people wrongly refer to as a Great Kilt) goes WAY back and has ties to the Romans, but the modern pleated skirt-adjacent "kilt" was invented by a british foundry owner whose irish workers kept refusing to wear pants and catching themselves on fire with their oversized plaids.

#

So since they wouldn't wear pants, he made them skirts, basically.

#

(Also yes, Plaid is the Object(it means Blanket, and yeah, it's about as big as a giant blanket, you basically roll yourself into it and hope), Tartan is the Pattern(Of which the "Family tartan" was Also invented by a British person, a Major serving in Africa), and all of the modern kilt nonsense associated with both are Victorian inventions.

Also so was the hIghland games.

#

All of which is to say, we have the Victorian british to thank for all the scotsmen and irishmen who indecently expose themselves while wearing a dress in the wind. XD

#

Also speaking of family colors, the "family crest" in heraldry was ALSO a victorian invention. Charges prior were All individual.

abstract verge
#

Especially because it led to me being able to control my blinds without getting up

loud pike
#

hehe... My favorite dumb unintended consequences bit from history is a physics professor in the late 1800s doing an experiment that led to Youtube.

loud pike
#

(Alfred Meyer. Figured out that playing low frequencies completely masked higher frequencies. Not just made them inaudible, made them go away entirely. Decades later some german dudes with money figured out this would be a good way to take a waveform in digital audio and make it a smaller file by cutting out the parts of the waveform that would never be audible anyway. Creates MP3 compression, but systems are way too slow to decode it in real time. Systems get faster and suddenly the MP3 comes back to the forefront.

Suddenly people are downloading more files of a larger size than a picture, pushing demand for faster internet. People start distributing their own music challenging the record label model, and someone figures out you can make an MP3 file stream. Shoutcast is born using the P2P model downloading had been using...

#

Demand for streaming Radio from different cities also takes off using the same technology. Then Shoutcast starts experimenting with video, all while shoutcast broadcasters take the pirate radio model from before to publish rants and otherwise. MP3 compression means entire shows can be downloaded off sites, and the PC's role changes from business and occasional games machine to a multimedia platform.

#

And then someone opens a video dating site trying to capitalize on the online dating craze, and goes to 4chan asking them to make profiles. 4chan responds by flooding the site with cat videos.

#

You may know that site by its name. Youtube.

#

Youtube's entire success comes from the individual creator revolution brought on by Shoutcast, which draws its success from pirate radio and the technology Fraunhofer perfected, which draws the entirety of its modeling and technological inspiration from Alfred Meyer, just a professor with free time and funding.

#

(I hesitate to call it the New Media Revolution, because there are some who get really silly about when that actually started, including pointing to Salvador Dali)

#

(Also that same principle of auditory masking is why No, your vinyls don't sound better than MP3s. Unless you're downloading the lowest bitrates possible.)

#

I didn't know that, I love how all successful things have a weird story

dusty gale
#

So uh, guys... Quick question since all the support forums are now post-based, and I do not think this one merits a separate post...

Was the multiprotocol support removed from HA/HAOS GUI recently? Went to re-do my HA setup, starting from scratch with manual backup piece imports, and the only options I'm getting are to configure either Zigbee or Thread, not the usual "reconfigure multiprotocol"... Can't seem to spot anything in the release notes about it either.

Welcome to the dumpster fire of IoT security! Today I'm taking a look at the Sipeed NanoKVM, a solution for remote control of a computer over a network. It does a lot of things you'd expect from a device in this class, something like a PiKVM or JetKVM, except it does all of it with no regard to data security best practices. Come along on this ad...

โ–ถ Play video

Last week I did a security review of the Sipeed NanoKVM, and the comments section asked me to take a second look at the JetKVM. So, having already evaluated its functionality in a previous video, come along as I look more in depth at their security practices.

Unfortunately, most soil moisture sensors used in our Arduino, ESP8266, or ESP32 projects destroy themselves after a short while. We need a better solution.
Today we will test different sensors, and I will show you, how they work and why most sensors from China destroy themselves. And of course, we will find a solution to the problem.

#

Usually after a weekend I've got at least a few dozen tickets to look at. Most of them aren't for me; we have a shared queue with all the L1/2 IT support folks for our Area. I can usually start planning out my work week: who needs in-person visits, start scheduling Teams calls with people, see if anyone wants to see about ordering computers and schedule time with them to go over options and/or fill out spreadsheets + send instructions to them for how to actually place the order, figure out if I need to get into various systems to make changes to our public-facing stuff, and so on. You know...Typical "generalist IT stuff."

Being a three-day weekend, I expected about thirty tickets to look at.

if the company finds you that important, your peers and juniors do, too. so, your behaviors are contagious.

i'll step down from the soapbox :)

That moment when someone took Kevin McLeod's "muppets on parade" but made it One Winged Angel...

#

The internet is broken.

#

Check that. meatball parade, not muppets. That's a different one. XD

#

Check that again, the other song I was thinking of was muppets paradise. But no, meatball parade. Brain no worky at the moment.

I mean who hasn't sniffed the new electronics though?

Love the smell of that citrus-based PCB cleaner

loud pike
loud pike

There's a very specific smell that capacitor electrolyte has. Same with burnt motors, and cooked transformers.

simple gazelle
#

I've heard people who do old consoles speaking of a fishy smell from leaky old caps, but I guess that's going to vary by era?

loud pike
#

Yup. Aluminum electrolyte caps have a sort of acidic.. fuzzy? smell? I dunno, it's hard to explain, I know it when I smell it though

#

And yeah, motor burn has a distinct copper burn smell. Once you know what that smell is, you can spot it REAL quick

#

On an unrelated note... recommended game...

A few years ago one of our UPSs at work cooked its batteries. Walked in the back door (right next to the main power room for the datacentre) at ~07:30 on a Monday morning, overpowering stink of sulphur.

ocean oar
#

One of the stinky things humans are seemingly most attuned to (chlorine, sulphur, ammonia)

loud pike
#

Battery blow Sucks. And human noses are surprisingly sensitive XD

ocean oar
#

Nothing quite like seeing AGM batteries that have BOILED their electrolyte out, and it's condensing on the battery shelves and dripping onto the floor

#

Or, nearly 6 hours after cutting the battery breakers, watching the UPS service people breaking batteries that have melted to each other apart with a crowbar, and that are still >80ยฐC

#

I would hazard a guess that we were hours (at most) away from a rather large electrical fire

(actually i'm waiting for the snow to actually STOP)

loud pike

I hear that gas powered sticks never run out of gas.

static schooner
#

Eventually your gas powered snowblower may warm the climate enough to make it unnecessary. Might be a while though

shell basalt
#

well its that or try the gas powered leaf blower

#

which does seem silly for ~4" of snow

#

its still f'in snowing

once I get done with this meeting, I'll re-sweep the path for cats, but they haven't been back since this morning

Or an ice skating rink

just depends on how you look at it

shell basalt

so, sweeping the cat feeding and shelter area again.. yes, this could've been easily maintained with multiple (every 2-3 hours) passes with a leaf blower

@loud pike I'm watching Shoyan right now. I love you for pointing him out and him for how he builds houses

@shell basalt see any of your cats yet?

shell basalt

no ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

apart from the missed one early this morning, there's been no sign of them, even the paw prints have been snowed back over

shell basalt
#

i'm going to clean off their spots again here in a bit since the snow is slowing down

forest edge
#

i'm sure they are bunkered down. someone may have trapped them in thier garage or something

shell basalt
#

i'll deal with clearing the driveway and sidewalks tomorrow

#

yeah I still believe they have some other and probably better shelter somewhere

#

this isn't the first storm they've survived .. when it's 40 on Sunday, I full on expect to see Stoopid flopped on his back soaking up some sun as usual

forest edge
#

none the less. if you do happen to see them before nightfall I would (in your shoes) try and lock them up somewhere before temps really drop

#

but yes, cats that are use to the outside tend to have thier places for weather like this

shell basalt
#

i've tried, Stoopid is far too smart, and Tux flips out to the point where he'll hurt himself

#

I was going to try and improve their environment, but some spineless wonders decided to fire me back in November and I'm trying to recover financially from that

#

like I was planning on running power outside, setting up some heated shelters (with webcams to monetize them - get them to earn their keep), heated water and food bowls

forest edge
#

heated pads for outdoors are around 40 bucks. you can use almost anything as a shelter because you really only need to partially block the wind. most outdoor cats won't go into a shelter unless it has two exits

#

I had some old plastic containers with lids that I cut holes into one year for an outdoor cat. stuck the heated pad in there and he loved it

#

some people use hay to build a shelter, some person on FB was offering up those mylar or whatever cat houses

dosen't have to have a heating pad. just use straw

shell basalt

the little shits have shelters

#

there's 4 of those, and they use 'em when they're around

forest edge
#

oh you made it sound like they inadequate

shell basalt
#

well clearly they are today since they're unused

forest edge
#

lol not necessarily. they just might prefer a fancier hotel for the night

shell basalt
#

I want to make them better ones when I can.. something kind of dual-chambered so that they can get in and out but still blocks the wind
