volvo actually released a comparison of the xc40 (i think) in electric and fossil versions. they did not break even until you had driver 50000km without changing battery pack. and that was on scandinavian power (94% renewable). for average european power it went up to 100000km. and for world average about 150000km. which you just won't do without changing the battery pack.

There is actually one really big problem with it. People get an annoying sense of invulnerability from things like this.
Here in NZ we have a massive problem with dramatically under-prepared (clothing, equipment, food, etc) people (often, but not exclusively, tourists) wandering off into the bush and triggering large scale search and rescue operations.
Despite a campaign for, and easy availability of rental locator beacons, people are going to think their phone is "enough". Not realising the major attribute of the PLB is it's supposed to be attached to your pack's chest straps, and designed to be able to be activated one-handed while you're hanging upside down from a tree with 1.5 broken arms, and have a battery that's guaranteed to last long enough for you to be found.

I know this is an issue that affects a small percentage of the population, but it's quite literally a matter of life and death.

Honestly - as always - half the challenge is people. The search-and-rescue people try to hammer it into people that they'd rather people set off the beacon and it takes three people and one helicopter an hour to find them for something that turns out to be nothing, than a week-long manual search involving 50 people trekking through the bush, helicopters with FLIR, etc, etc.

It's quite refreshing in this day and age, you used to see the occasional post on reddit from someone who've fallen down a cliff and had that "am I injured enough to bother people with this?" conundrum, always gets an amazingly positive response for just pulling the rip cord

we have epirb aboard. and now there is also experimental ais tracking via satellite.
ais is really meant for short range boat-to-boat signalling so boats with ais receivers can see position, speed and heading for boats with ais transmitters. ais transmitters used to be quite expensive, but now there is no reason to get just a receiver. they communicate over vhf frequencies.
there has grown up quite a network of land based ais receivers in order to offer tracking services on the internet. of course those only work along the coast. but now you may also get tracked by satellite services. so no more staying hidden even at high sea if you also want to be seen and avoided by other traffic near you. sigh.

i once set up my own ais tracking station just to see if it was doable. old laptop running linux, a cheap chinese hackable dvb usb stick and a big vhf antenna to replace the tiny little dvb antenna. worked like a charm. i could easily feed it into opencpn to get nearby boats displayed on the map

Google can address and change any setting on the tuya lights, but is a bit dumb a lot of the time. Alexa can change Most settings but can't change the color temperature because it doesn't know what that means. Home assistant can change the brightness And That's It.

Mind you this is for RGB lights.

How about instead of needing specialized HDMI-hooked LED strips for backlighting your TV with that extended color effect, you just have a local hook that tells HA what the screen is doing in simplified ways and sends that to an LED strip of choice?

Might not work for TVs, but it might be a way to extend the usefulness of wifi strips for monitor support on PCs and the like.

Though in theory you could also hook it to broadcasted things too...

I've never seen a multimode SFP that didn't have a maximum transmit power equal to its receiver overload power. You could plug most of them into each other with a 0.3 metre fibre and they'd work

It's just about only a problem with >=40km transceivers
