So I think you can make a resillient smart home, but you need to think about what technologies you use and how you apply them

and what your own behavior is

So yes, keeping automations small and simple goes a long way, illuminance sensor + blinds, if the value goes above x close them

And if I then compare that to my parents. I was recently at my parents and they had a guest over, and my mom even warned him like, oh the lights will turn off briefly. Some lights turned off. She turned them on with the app. 5 minutes later. Everything turns off. She turns them on again

All because she had something set up in the hue app

Yeah. Thing is, though, the Synology DS1515+ NAS is quite an unreliable NAS, they often fail. No data loss, but the NAS itself just randomly stops working because the CPU is sensitive or something like that. I really don't feel like migratig from one NAS to another when the (inevitable) DS1515+ death (v2.0) happens (could be months, could be years)... Hence why I'm strongly considering going DIY straight away, and doing it right the first time round.

I have a massive Fractal 7 XL gaming PC, I purposly bought it because it can host lots of HDDs (12!). The plan is to add my NAS to the case, alongside the gaming portion. There's more than enough room, I just need to find a small-ish PCB (Intel N100? Suggestions welcome!) capable of handling (up-to) 12 HDDs. Yeah, going from a single-bay NAS to a multi-bay NAS is a pain in the arse. I have 5 10 TB HDDs full of data, unfortunately, I can't just slap my HDDs in the NAS and go. No, they need to be erased before use... My best bet is to buy ANOTHER 10 TB HDD and store 1 10 TB worth of data on the NEW HDD, put my old HDD in my NAS, initiaize it, then move my data to the NAS. Repeat 5 times. It's literally cheaper to get a N100 board, and go from there... It's fucking stupid.

you can get expensive ones that support faster speeds and do things like have onboard caching of writes and a battery so it eats up what your writing quickly but if you have a power failure before its phyically written to the disks then it holds it until the drives come back up.

On multiple occasions the automation kicked off because her iPhone has some kind of iCloud vpn/privacy thing and so the location shifts around (at least as far as the geolocation in HAOS is concerned) and so we're sitting at the kitchen atble an hour after shes home having dinner and the system announces "Kim has entered the home zone! Openeing garage door!" 🤦‍

The first time it happened I looked at her and said "Who are you and what have you done with my wife?!?" after the 4th or 5th time, its not so funny ¯_(ツ)_/¯

I solved the issue on my android cell by using bluetooth.. essentially unless my bluetooth is connected to the car, then an entry/exity from home zone is not valid as I only drive in/out of those zones. but her iphone wont let me know the staus of her bluetooth connection like the android does 😦

essentially plex makes u make an account so it can then connect you back to your plex server from remote locations. you are still going point-to-point from your player to your plex instance.. it just avoids having to setup a vpn to access your plex server remotely

so on your phone or laptop you go phone->plex.tv then plex.tv->back to your phone (with location of your plex server) then phone->your plex server

@warm helm I have a similar situation- lots of family members that are older.. the thing I hate is when the plex offerings somehow get restored (pinned) to the main page and my server gets unpinned. its happened a couple times. what i say to people using plex is: install jellyfin alongside it and point it at the same library. give it a go and see what you think. if something isnt working can drop back to plex. if you want yourself liking it then you can make a decision down the line. trying jellyfin doesnt mean you cant use plex

it can also help to do a bit of sound treatment in the room. cover reflective hard reverberant surfaces with something soft like rugs and curtains and pillows and such

that said, a working mic, with no extra "stuff" with decent proximity to the sound source is fine.

if you're wanting budget, quest works fine.. if you don't want to pay Meta and aren't in North America, the Pico 4 is on par with a Quest 3. Both headsets are standalone, so you have to use an app and either good wifi or a cable to stream from your PC for PCVR games. Index is more expensive and uses lighthouses for tracking, but is basically just an extra monitor (meaning no streaming/connection problems, or worries of battery level, etc.), and has the best controllers on the market.
