I got an electrician to wire in smart switches, specifically relays. My intention with them was to use them in their decoupled mode. Whoever they are two way switches, and one of the switches has been "deactivated" and it houses the relay. This was because the other switch had too little space for a relay. Will I still be able to use decoupled mode for smart switches or am I doomed?

you can still use a relay to control a light or whatever using 3 way switches but the relay has to be housed in the box where the switches connect to the light. basically you would wire the 2 three way switches normally but the switch with the relay would connect into the relay as well as the light

It isn't, but that's just because of the style of the house

The walls are solid timber, and the "box" is cut out with a CNC router (and the holes up/down through each board similarly CNC drilled)

If you have a timber framing / plasterboard cavity wall house it looks pretty similar, but we use plastic junction boxes not metal

Our wiring is red phase / black neutral / green earth, except for that 2-way circuit for which I have installed the appropriate modern red/white/blue with yellow insulation

There is such thing as a four way. They’re used when there are three or more switches controlling the light. The circuit winds up being power-> 3-way -> 4-way -> 3-way -> fixture. You can use a smart relay in the final position.

Issue isn't whether it'll work through something. Brick sticking out from outlet means furniture can't be pushed to the wall, even if the device itself is mounted elsewhere. I've got a sensor now (Aqara FP2) on the wall mounted, but the power block creates a whole separate problem.

generally having a dedicated installation for ha is good because you can reboot everything else without your hom eautomations being down for a while

you could also just throw everything on a big one, which may be more (cost) and maintenance efficient

personally i would buy dedicated hardware for things like a router and run everything else virtualized on one machine

Depends a lot on the servers you buy

it highly depends on your selection of hardware

you can build very capable systems with mobile chips (n100/ ryzen G) that use very little energy

or you can buy server stuff which uses as much as aircons when idle

lots of smaller servers have theoretically lots of overhead, as you will be powering a lot of stuff multiple times that isnt really needed
