the mtr-1 has the one that can count objects

real frigate
#

Ah! Yeah! You’re right. It’s late. I blame that. 🤣

#

But, I still like the msr better. I have them tucked into places to do some neat detections.

forest edge
#

70+ tho... no display other than a single rgb led... s difficult to press pay

real frigate
#

I didn’t go with the co2 because of the price increase. There are some good reasons for it, sure, but for my cases, I really wanted presence and my fans are on year round.

forest edge
#

I plan to use it here in this room where the door is closed.. need to see if i'm killing myself over time while gaming lol

#

and since it can do temp/humidity and has the buzer for notifications.. those were bonuses

real frigate
#

Hahaha spoiler alert… you are. You’re welcome. 🤣

forest edge
#

the presence detection is actually the one thing I could do without lol

real frigate
#

But, for that case, I’d get the air-1 instead.

forest edge
#

thats even more expensive

#

hard pass

#

i don't care about dust in the air so much

#

not like i an escape and a device telling me it's there is is counter productive

real frigate
#

True, but compared to some of the others, it’s not too bad. But, a msr-2 with the co2 would be a good choice as well.

#

Sonoma, just fyi, even Apollo says the temp sensor isn’t accurate because of the heat coming off the board.

forest edge

I went through and priced out all the parts that make the thing.. the price for it is in line but still 70 bucks.. makes my duct tape heart skip a beat

#

I went ahead and bought it

Um so something stupid might have just happened

I got an electrician to wire in smart switches, specifically relays. My intention with them was to use them in their decoupled mode. Whoever they are two way switches, and one of the switches has been "deactivated" and it houses the relay. This was because the other switch had too little space for a relay. Will I still be able to use decoupled mode for smart switches or am I doomed?

forest edge
static schooner
#

So much for dinner...

forest edge
finite blaze
#

2 way, there are two light switches in separate locations controlling the same light

forest edge
#

yea thats called three way switches lol

#

you can still use a relay to control a light or whatever using 3 way switches but the relay has to be housed in the box where the switches connect to the light. basically you would wire the 2 three way switches normally but the switch with the relay would connect into the relay as well as the light

finite blaze
forest edge
#

why?

finite blaze
#

it being called three way and not two way... it is triggering

forest edge
#

well there is no such thing as a two way switch or fourway for that matter

finite blaze
forest edge
#

well there is a fourway

forest edge
finite blaze
#

so if i use decoupled mode if i press the buttons it wont change the state of the actual bulb?

forest edge
#

what are you using? a shelly?

finite blaze
#

yes

forest edge
#

yes, in detached mode the switches just act a sensor or whatever for the shelly, they do not directly control the relay

#

mechanically control the relay I should say

finite blaze
#

phew okay

#

thank you very much

forest edge
#

assuming the junction box the electrician put the relay in has a hot line and it's not just using the power coming from the second (or first in line switch) then the relay should always have power

#

heh someone put a diagram together for the correct wiring of a shelly with three way switches

ocean oar
#

I just wired a shelly into the 2-way switch circuit for the lights down the stairs from the street to our house

#

This is what I did:

#

(it's stylised, but in a form that shows the colour of each wire, and the colour of the outer insulation, and combined with some labels applied to the cables themselves, should help future me)

forest edge
#

wtf kind of rats nest am i looking at lol

ocean oar
#

You think it's bad now, you should see the state when I found it

#

Enjoy, what an electrician in 1991 thought was acceptable:

forest edge
#

non american wiring confuses me sometimes

#

that dosen't even appear to be in a junction box

ocean oar
#

It isn't, but that's just because of the style of the house

#

The walls are solid timber, and the "box" is cut out with a CNC router (and the holes up/down through each board similarly CNC drilled)

#

If you have a timber framing / plasterboard cavity wall house it looks pretty similar, but we use plastic junction boxes not metal

#

Our wiring is red phase / black neutral / green earth, except for that 2-way circuit for which I have installed the appropriate modern red/white/blue with yellow insulation

forest edge
#

kind of agree with everyone else about the new change from service calls to actions not being a very good change

so many things use the reference actions as is

I have 1 4 way switch in this house for my basement lights which can be controlled by 3 separate locations. while I could find a rocker style switch, the brand and model of my other switches are diffrent so this one switch while at a distance looks the same, up close you can see it dosen't match my other ones lol

winged obsidian

My headache was of course it was what I found in the box where I wanted to add the smart switch. Fortunately only one in the house.

#

Yeah, at least I’ve got mine all to white now. That’s a little easier to match than assorted shades of beige.

On the note of shitty wiring a lot of older houses have single pole switches and you CAN make those smart with something like this https://sonoff.tech/product/diy-smart-switches/minir4/

As long as there is an uninterrupted return path to neutral it will just sip power to power itself. No neutral required

SONOFF smallest WiFi smart switch ever, fits in various boxes, even the smallest European standard ones. Added 'Detach Relay' mode, which means the states of external switches and relay are separated, so operating the external switch button won't affect the relay state.

I had ordered a m70q gen 2 mini pc with an 11400T for some low power docker containers and VM's such as home assistant and had already printed a rack mount holder.

tidal bronze
#

I need to start doing that one of these days.

static schooner
#

it's important for me to know when my cats use the catbox:

tidal bronze
#

I see that you have in-wall returns

static schooner
#

lawn dude today:

tidal bronze
#

I disble all frigate notifications 3 days of the week.

static schooner
tidal bronze
#

So in-wall ducting/drywall box as well then.

static schooner
#

yes

#

for the return

#

That's immediately below my upstairs furnace/air handler. Downstairs, it goes up a wall cavity, across a ceiling cavity, and down another wall cavity

tidal bronze
#

Almost the same.

static schooner
#

I'm not a fan of the "wall/ceiling cavity" returns. I spent about a year diagnosing a really bad smell from my downstairs HVAC and it turned out that it was sucking sewer gas out of a cracked drain pipe from one of my upstairs bathrooms. Good that I eventually found the cracked pipe (as water was streaming out from the tub above), but it just pulls air from anywhere it can, rather than a straight, isolated shot from the return

#

it was quite vexxing and was driving me nuts for a really long time

#

it would come and go without notice

tidal bronze
#

That's a trip.

static schooner
#

it was really making me depressed because I couldn't figure out where the smell was coming from and couldn't find any contractor who could figure it out

tidal bronze
#

He was 2 minutes early. Came before notifications turned off lol.

tidal bronze
static schooner
#

the problem

#

exactly

#

nobody else has to live with the problem

#

I learned that in spades

tidal bronze
#

So this was exposed or near return cavity?

static schooner
#

it was exposed to the ceiling cavity where the return is routed

tidal bronze
#

Ah. Yep that would drive anyone bonkers

static schooner
#

and the crack was on the wall side, so I couldn't see it even from the hole that I cut in ceiling below it

tidal bronze
#

Wowza

static schooner
#

but I could see the water streaming out when I turned on the tub faucet above

#

I cut so many holes in my walls and ceilings and I have so many pictures of the innards of all those cavities

#

I also had a bunch of mouse activity up there that I cleaned up, but that wasn't the actual problem

tidal bronze
#

So not a single contractor ran a humidity test?

static schooner
#

I didn't ask and nobody recommended it

#

doubt it would have helped

#

I don't use that bathroom or the tub

tidal bronze
#

Ah.

static schooner
#

There was no damage from the crack because I never use that tub

#

I looked all the way down to the slab

tidal bronze
#

Glad you found it. Persistence always pays off in these situations

static schooner
#

over a year. A more zoomed-out pic:

tidal bronze
#

Damn you have textured paint too. Color marching must've been fun

static schooner
#

that's my hack. I should really get a real plumber out to fix it the right way

#

I haven't done anything aside from replacing the drywall at this point

#

I need to get somebody in to patch and paint all the holes I made

#

I counted like 25 holes I cut

tidal bronze
#

You were at it. Lol.

#

That's the way to go.

static schooner
#

like a dog with a bone

tidal bronze
#

I prefer textured to flat but oh boy not a chance of color matching. Year ago I had to repaint half of downstairs.

static schooner
tidal bronze
#

Nice.

static schooner
#

I used a small phillips head screwdriver to dig out a small hole and stuck the boroscope in there

#

all over the place

tidal bronze
#

Now you can offer this as a service 😆

static schooner
#

yeah, I'm done with that shit

#

I do recommend keeping a boroscope around for any such things, like fishing cables and such

#

they're quite magical and helpful

tidal bronze
#

I do have one. Makes 2 story cable runs a snap.

static schooner
#

I liked the second one that has two cameras, one on the end and one on the side, and you can do split-screen

tidal bronze
#

That's cool.

#

Must get one of those.

static schooner
#

don't have to bend the cable if you just want to stick it in and look around

#

I ended up breaking my first one, I think because I kept bending it around

tidal bronze
#

I usually check for plumbing before using auger bits.

static schooner
#

Yep, I do that for plumbing and electrical. I use a phillips head screwdriver to poke a hole in a way that won't puncture anything, then look around with the boroscope

#

then I tape the boroscope cable to a fiberglass fish rod and thread it down

tidal bronze
#

Nice.

#

Best in the industry for running cable.

Im breaking down my homelab (too much expenses vs what I get out of it), so will go light with just a consumer wifi router with control, and manily 1G network. NAS computer might be sold or changed to a regular NAS.

Instead of testing a million routers. Is it any suggestions for routers that might have the following.

  1. A good UI where you can actually set all the settings people like us would expect. (not type you can change the network range, and add a dns, but more like client control, mac reverse, control over the wifi bands etc.

  2. Can be wifi 7, or leasat wifi6

  3. Should (not required) have at elsat 1-2 2,5G ports

forest edge
#

asus routers have a lot of those options including the ability to set up vlans etc. You can also run alternative firmware on many routers like dd-wrt and freshtomato, opnwrt etc and those will give complete access to every detail the router itself can handle.

#

weren't you the one that wanted to run like super raid with a billion drives and when I made a comment about that, you were like so what? lol

late gate
#

Yeah, I was also thinking Asus. . Yeah an dI am the one who did super over the top raid, but I figured, most what I do its plex, and I dont need to run a 3-400W beast to play a video clip. Plus the WAF went down the drain, so I accepted throwing out the rack, and just go for a decent good router and not much fuzz

#

So what would you do guys. Have every server on like separate thin clients. Or have one powerful machine?

  • HA
  • NAS
  • Opensense (Router)
solar zealot
#

depends

#

generally having a dedicated installation for ha is good because you can reboot everything else without your hom eautomations being down for a while

#

you could also just throw everything on a big one, which may be more (cost) and maintenance efficient

#

personally i would buy dedicated hardware for things like a router and run everything else virtualized on one machine

clever mortar
#

Yeah, router should be separate

#

NAS too unless your NAS can run VMs

solar zealot
#

truenas virtualized ftw

snow flint
#

Allrighttt, this gives me stuff to think about.

#

What do you guys think about energy consumption wich shud be more efficient? Big server + router or lots of smaller servers

#

Myself i think the first is less powerconsumption but not like much less than the later

clever mortar
#

Depends a lot on the servers you buy

solar zealot
#

it highly depends on your selection of hardware

#

you can build very capable systems with mobile chips (n100/ ryzen G) that use very little energy

#

or you can buy server stuff which uses as much as aircons when idle

#

lots of smaller servers have theoretically lots of overhead, as you will be powering a lot of stuff multiple times that isnt really needed

camera looks t be kind of high up so a person getting closer to the camera should never be that size lol

That bounding box is about 3 people tall, yes

forest edge
#

that little wooden part at the bottom of that fence threw me off lol

ocean oar
#

The fence is about 1.5m tall, the retaining wall it's above is about 1.2m

forest edge
#

my brain assumed that was a normal sized wooden fence without even taking the metal parts into account on top lol

#

so i was picturing the camera being on the 2nd floor or something

ocean oar

Nah, just fisheye doorbell

I immediately thought that's definitely a monster

great i orderd 4 new zigbee smart plugs. i needed one but you know. home assistant.

#

one hour later.. I have 0 spare zigbee smart plugs

ocean oar
#

That is often how it goes

forest edge
#

I haven't really found much use for them other than to extend the network

#

as opposed to something that just takes up a plug I guess they are better cause you atleast get the plug socket back but still

ocean oar
#

I've got a few sets of dumb lights (permanently-installed festoon lights on the deck railings, that sort of things), and other mostly decorative lights that I use smart plugs for.
Plus one (so far) hard-wired Shelly relay that turns the 2-way light switch circuit for the path lights into 2-way + smart control

Our local tech store has what looks like the retail version of the aquara hnt on shelf

#

What a time to be alive

Additionally they have terrible connectivity inside

Yeah, good development. Not at SAN yet, though

Yep

I think I read that they only had 500k folks sign up for the pilot since it opened, much lower than their cap of 1.5M

Uh, most of them?

We have the latest one, which iirc don’t have a number with it anymore.

But my husband installed Burnout Paradise Remastered and holy shit that’s a fun game, totally forgot.

It’s nice not having a Serious Racing Game™️.

I think the implementation is pretty good. Nothing visible until a verification device requests the ID via tap or scan.

static schooner
#

Yeah, I think that's the value if you don't even need to hand anything over

#

Supposed to be the same if you get pulled over

tidal bronze
#

Indeed. But I don't think the wallet version supports age verification

static schooner
#

Weird. That's one of the mDL features

#

Meh, I just grew a white beard

tidal bronze
#

Yes. I have encountered that hiccup at POS

#

Some need the ID scan to continue. POS rollout will take time

static schooner
#

I'm suspicious that all millions of cops and dive bars will support it anytime soon

tidal bronze
#

Interesting

static schooner
#

That's key. Otherwise nobody would use it

tidal bronze
#

So no go for POS IR scanners

static schooner
#

I thought it also offered a QR code

tidal bronze
#

I think QR is used to initiate the handshake

I was at the DMV yesterday and needed to email them a form, the lady tried taking my phone out of my hand to type her email address in. She got huffy when I pulled back and told her to read it to me.
