MO is giving us the ability to challenge where the fed government broadband expansion funding goes and this is what it says for my barn

#

so jumping on this

#

I want FTTB fiber to the barn

clear ferry
#

Lol how can they call that broadband

#

Fcc definition of broadband is apparently 25/3

forest edge
#

its marked as underserved which means it's not broadband

#

they call area/addresses as either served, underserved, unserved and the latter two only qualify for the funding

clear ferry
#

Apparently we have no definition for broadband, but the report says 96.7% of all houses have access to minimum 100Mbit

#

And 95.1% of all houses have access to minimum 1000Mbit

forest edge
#

they will do the same eventually but it be through wireless means for rural areas like my barn most likely

clear ferry
#

Apparently our national average speed in 2023 was 300Mbit

#

Up from 268Mbit in 2022

#

A can't even get less than 300/300 from my current provider

#

And since they are ripping all copper out of the ground DSL isn't much of an option anyway, and DOCSIS only lives for apartment buildings in city areas

prisma briar
#

I've had access to 1Gb+ speeds since 2017 so I imagine probably the majority of Americans do now

forest edge
#

just how many diffrent providers does norway have?

Yeah, I've had gigabit access since 2015, swedes have since 2005 I believe

clear ferry

forest edge

those are mostly sub companies under a larger isp?

prisma briar

We don't have sub companies

forest edge

we do

#

I wouldn't even know our count

prisma briar

Do they all run their own wires or are the wires leased?

clear ferry

Wires are mostly from the two legacy providers, that had monopoly, but they are obliged by law to share their lines to anyone who wants to provide a service in an area they cover

Oh interesting, Norway is way different than us in the regard. We only have three ISPs

prisma briar

clear ferry

orchid rose

Why aren't they just bought up by the bigger players?

clear ferry

Some are

#

But usually they still own the lines, and then let the bigger player use them to deliver a central service

Because that's the shitty bit to do

prisma briar

prisma briar

#

primal laurel
#

Don't understand how they can get your phone number

prisma briar
#

It doesn't look like it is anymore but voter registration info here used to be public

forest edge
#

under certain circumstances like during an election year campaigns can get ahold of mailing lists etc

prisma briar
#

I remember looking up my voter registration info once and getting it with just my name

forest edge
#

I have to provide name, address

prisma briar
#

I was able to look it up now again but it needed my DOB and zip code too

#

If someone has that they probably have my phone number

forest edge
#

and dob, that too

#

but all that information is available in chunks by area for campaign reasons

#

I only ever put my landline number down for anything tho.. which is why spam on my cell is so rare

and with my home phone coming through spectrum that line gets filtered automatically by spectrum

prisma briar

Anyone know if Samsung has any built-in alternative to Airplay I could emulate for phones to cast to?

Closest I can think of is a chromecast but I don't have anything HDMI where I want this running

clear ferry
#

Wait what, you want to cast from a Samsung? To what? Or to a Samsung from what?

prisma briar
#

From a samsung phone to a receiver

#

BubbleUPNP will do it but I wanted something that'd work on friends' phones without installing apps

#

That'll just cast to an airplay receiver, of which there are emulators I can run

#

And Bluetooth wouldn't reach across my house I don't think

glacial knot
#

You'd have to setup some Miracast Receiver

But the protocol is open mostly in name
It's apparently so complex and full of edge cases, that there's really only Samsung and Google implementations.

At least not reasonable bluetooth support

gleaming crater
#

That's why I went snapcast

#

I can spin up multiple client services for each audio device

#

And it has all the settings for delay per device

prisma briar
#

I can throw more pis at it, my source is pcm getting dumped out over udp multicast

#

But apparently all I have left are non-wireless Zeros

Snapcast was still TCP unicast last I saw

prisma briar
gleaming crater
prisma briar
#

Scream is about as basic as it gets. I was going to set up something to tie them into HA, probably a python mqtt thing to allow setting the volume and starting/stopping scream

gleaming crater
#

Lol there is already a full snapcast integration for HA, I have my nodes fade up/down with the lights automatically

#

It's pretty easy to change source on a device with a service call, I bump my bedroom player between music and a networked sleep machine feed

prisma briar
#

I have a windows vm set up running amazon music dumping it out with scream

gleaming crater
#

How well does it stay in sync between nodes?

prisma briar
#

I tried logitech media server on it but I kept getting pops in the audio when I had three or more destinations synced

gleaming crater
#

That's because LMS is a single-threaded perl app lol

#

I've yet to find a better last mile over snapcast so far, it just works

prisma briar
#

But it's multicast so the same packet is going to all the destinations at the same time

gleaming crater
#

You get to configure a server buffer with snapcast and configure each client +/- however many ms you want from server for playback

prisma briar
#

The scream receiver has options for configuring the buffer

#

It was 50ms by default

#

Which I assume means all clients are within 50ms of eachother at worst

gleaming crater
#

I think that's time from packet to playback?

prisma briar
#

It keeps 50ms of audio buffer for dejittering

#

But the packets are all multicast udp so the only delay should be wireless retransmissions at worst

#

And if audio is missed scream just drops it, it doesn't try to play every frame

gleaming crater
#

Yeah snapcast skips frames that arrive after play time

#

I'm running 64ms with tcp unicast too

#

and like 10 nodes lol

prisma briar
#

I think I'm going to end up with 6 when I'm done

#

My shower, bedroom, livingroom, office, backyard, and garage

gleaming crater
#

As long as you can get them all in sync, my zones overlap enough I can't tolerate mismatched playback

prisma briar
#

I think I can get it working. I might be stuck with pulse for doing latency adjustments though.

#

One of my stereos was adding like .5s

#

I really hate dealing with pulse's security and per-user daemons though, makes making a systemd service to run an audio app way too tricky.

primal laurel

Numerology (known before the 20th century as arithmancy) is the belief in an occult, divine or mystical relationship between a number and one or more coinciding events. It is also the study of the numerical value, via an alphanumeric system, of the letters in words and names. When numerology is applied to a person's name, it is a form of onomancy. It is often associated with astrology and other divinatory arts.[2]

I think you should have given some examples or a definition of what you would consider an IoT device. Or even better, let someone pick a few device types and answer specific questions about those. For example the question 'How do your IoT devices work and how do you use them in your daily life?', I have no idea how to answer that. I have dozens of devices, and how I use them depends on what its function is. And then 'What data do your devices collect?', do you mean usage data? Or sensor data? Do you want me to list all data sources from all devices I have? 'How would you feel if someone else knew about this data?', well that depends entirely on which data we're talking about. Would I care about someone knowing what temperature my attic is? Probably not a lot. But camera images? Probably would care a lot more

prisma briar
#

Yea, no offense but this survey seems to have been written by somebody largely unfamiliar with IoT, especially Home Assistant.

#

The questions make sense when you're asking about a single device, like a thermostat or camera, but 'IoT' can be literally any device humans have ever made that's been computerized and made remotely controllable.

#

How do your IoT devices work

I think this one is either going to get you 'I don't know' or 'That's too long to explain in a text field, go read the docs'

Anyone know a good place to ask ffmpeg questions/is good at ffmpeg?

I'm streaming two PCM streams from pipes, mixing them, and sending them back out another pipe. When one of the pipes is silent I'm having to pad it with dummy frames, or ffmpeg blocks waiting on it. To my understanding aresample should add dummy frames of just silence, but it's not for me.

My ffmpeg command is
['ffmpeg',
'-use_wallclock_as_timestamps', 'true', '-f', 's24le', '-ac', '2', '-ar', '48000', '-i', '/tmp/ffmpeg-fifo-1',
'-use_wallclock_as_timestamps', 'true', '-f', 's24le', '-ac', '2', '-ar', '48000', '-i', '/tmp/ffmpeg-fifo-2',

#

I could probably concoct something, but would have to think about it

#

I had to do something similar for video, when I was combining two variable frame rate videos together and needed them in wall clock sync

prisma briar
#

These are raw pcm streams from two different computers I'm taking in over udp with python and putting into a pipe for ffmpeg

#

Whenever one gets 12 packets ahead of the other I repeat the last packet the lagging interface got 12 times to catch it back up

#

For reasons I'm unsure of the packet I replay has to be replayed a multiple of 3 times, even though each packet holds 24 stereo frames

#

Hacky test code https://pastebin.com/3GKssrNi

This listens on UDP for 48KHz 24bit stereo PCM frames being sent at it with a currently ignored 5 byte header, filters them into pipes based on source IP, mixes them with ffmpeg, then slaps on a hard-coded header and forwards the mixed stream onto a receiver.

#

If the streams quit sending ffmpeg just hangs so I kill it in that case and reopen it when I detect data again, heh. That also means I always have at least one source to sync the rest to.

Newer ones too aren't bricked from updates
Or at least can have automatic updates turned off

forest edge
#

you can't even drive a hybrid when the battery goes bad

#

no part of ev or the like sounds reliable lol

umbral cliff
forest edge
#

but hybrid as well?

#

that dosen't even make sense

umbral cliff
#

Probably depends on how the hybrid operates. If it charges the battery using the engine (and so is electric drive completely) then could make sense

#

If its just dual power, then its stupid I do agree

glacial knot
#

EVs have better reliability than ICE, since it's just way less moving parts in the engines
Modern car software setups are a different thing, but lower class EVs don't encumber themselves with as much either

forest edge
#

well when $$ is involved the definition of reliability somewhat changes

#

I have less invested in my truck at least in terms of repairs/maintenance over the last 20 years than most ev's first battry change cost lol

#

ev costs haven't really gone down either in regardless to replacement etc

#

purchase prices may have but thats it

glacial knot
#

If you want to compare running costs, you have to make an actual calculation of running costs that take fuel vs. electricity price per kilometer and driven distance into account ๐Ÿคท

forest edge
#

even those old leaf batteries still go for around 16k

#

there is no doubt in fuel saving an ev will be cheaper.. but the question really boils down to are you actually saving in the end? if everything that either needs to be replaced or fixed on an ev is so much more expensive than a gas car those savings in fuel cost dry up quick

glacial knot
#

Do the maths on cars you care about ๐Ÿคท

#

But if you try to compare repair cost of an ICE against battery replacement of EV you aren't doing it either

forest edge
#

there is a lot of variables at play

#

if I ever bought an ev it wouldn't be till someone has had one from a company I plan to buy from for at least half the time I have owned a gas vehicle and still say it was a worthy investment

#

car makes an awfully big paperweight

primal laurel
#

You're going to be driving EV one way or another, it's just a matter of time

forest edge
#

not necessarily ev's are not getting the good rap they had hoped

#

hell i think some of our car manfactures are even dropping thier ev lines

#

heh not just ours.. it seems

#

i'll probably be dead long before anyone is forced to drive an ev

glacial knot
forest edge
#

you just jinxed yourself

forest edge
primal laurel
#

There's nothing there about dropping EV lines

forest edge
#

i mean scaling back..

primal laurel
#

And yeah every new technology goes through hypecycles, nothing new

#

Idk why last year was so good

forest edge
#

way to be optimistic

glacial knot
#

I wonder if you'll ever be able to make a statement that you can support on the first try ๐Ÿ˜‚

forest edge
#

I would ask why you are always so angry but we already know the answer

glacial knot
#

Where do you see someone be angry?

forest edge
#

same place you get the notion where a statement that starts with "i think" is somehow meant to be solid fact lol

glacial knot
#

so yourself?

forest edge
#

case in point

primal laurel
forest edge
#

I have no doubts that at some point we will move off fossils fuels. but transitioning to full on ev is a long ways away still imo

#

when you see emergency vehicles switch over to full ev then you can be hopeful

primal laurel
#

We're much closer than you think

#

The US will take longer ofcourse because of your strong lobbyists and oil addiction

umbral cliff
umbral cliff
forest edge
#

there are already police ev's etc

#

but only a few

#

like 2 in a fleet etc

primal laurel
#

All the buses here are already electric

forest edge
#

yea we seen plenty of those on fire

primal laurel
#

None of them caught fire

forest edge
#

none of yours or no ev buses?

primal laurel
#

None of the ones that drive here

forest edge
#

well there are plenty around the world that has. so I guess the clock is ticking lol

primal laurel
#

gasoline vehicles are much more likely to catch fire so we're good

forest edge
#

you would hope so comparing something with a flammable liquid vs not but the fact that ev is not 0 chance says more in itself lol

primal laurel
#

what does that say?

forest edge
#

well since ev cars 50/50 catch fire when completely unattended and not involved in an accident while gas cars really only ever catch fire in an accident

#

i'll stick with gas

#

don't want to die in my sleep because my ev decided to burn up in the garage lol

primal laurel
#

wtf

forest edge
#

you thought they only caught fire during an accident?

primal laurel
#

you just keep saying the most random things without backing it up. Makes discussion pretty pointless

#

so im out

forest edge
#

do you people ever watch the news?

#

is this channel your ONLY source of facts?

primal laurel
#

im in research lol

glacial knot
#

Nah, this channel is our source for your imagination ๐Ÿ™‚

glacial knot
forest edge

forest edge

research how to google

primal laurel

the news =\= statistics

forest edge

hopeless

primal laurel
#

it's a big world, shit always happens. Doesnt say much, its about statistics

sudden forge
#

I just love that before the blaze was even extinguished, social media lit up about EV fire hazards in the Luton airport carpark fire

#

Transpires the vehicle that "caused" the blaze was non electrified

#

And bonus, wasn't in a collision

#

Albeit, it was running at the time rather than going boom while unattended and stationary

primal laurel
sudden forge
#

BMW have had a recall on gasoline fires that could be triggered without the engine being running though

sudden forge
#

The BMW one just required electricals to be on

#

Likewise plenty of gasoline fires over the years from dodgy fuel lines

#

See ford, Hyundai and Honda recalls

forest edge
#

non accident related ice fires here are so rare that I don't even remember the last time i've read about one.. here as in my local area.. not the country

glacial knot
# primal laurel ?

what do you think you are saying by saying you are in research? That you are removed from reality?

forest edge
sudden forge
#

10% ethanol is basically highest you can get here and a lot is only 5, does a lot to hold it at bay

#

The ford fire is on an e85 rated line too

#

Metal

forest edge
#

ethanol eats through the rubber they use for the fuel lines.. not implying that is the reason for the fires.. just making a joke about it lol

sudden forge
#

Ford's is a metallic line that cracks due to thermal cycling

forest edge
#

you can chalk most ice fires up to negligent car care.. non accident related ones

#

thats kind of diffrent than ev fires

sudden forge
#

All the brands I mentioned above had major recalls over somewhat spontaneous ignition events outside of typical maintenance or collision

#

I've had the misfortune of being in a vehicle fire outside of collision

#

I live by a major trunk route through England too, again, once a year or so, you get vehicle fire, no collision

#

It's not that rare

forest edge
#

that sucks.. but again.. that is something that was a design flaw or human direct cause. hard to compare that to ev fires

#

i guess inventing the lithium battery is a human cause lol

sudden forge
#

Most EVs default to not charging to 100% which does significantly reduce the risk

#

And many are switching chemistry entirely to LFP which is darn stable

#

Also just had first power cut in 6 months here yay \o/ it lasted all of 5 seconds

#

A few EVs are even doing the short range model as being LFP and the upgraded range model as being NCM. Which is then kinda amusing as the lfp models usually default to using 100% of the pack, the ncm doesn't. And the usable range on default settings ends up being pretty similar, though of course you have that option of juicing up the ncm further

forest edge
#

batteries have always had some con or another that has been hazardous to our health in one form or many. I don't see that ever changing so even if they lower the risk of spontaneous fires it will just be replaced with something else

#

though I guess they now have made a earth friendly liquid to combat lithium batteries

glacial knot
forest edge
#

bet that crap will cost a crap ton for fire fighters to keep on stock

sudden forge
#

its something folk wont like, and Ive already alluded to

#

RANGE

#

fixed loads of the issues of traditional lithium ion or lithium polymer cells. Greener to produce, more stable, harder wearing, less flammable, wider temperature range, and in some cases more power dense

#

But less energy dense, quite a bit less

forest edge
#

whats the range diffrence?

#

average currently is like 300 miles i think

sudden forge
#

Basically you're looking at ~75%ish

#

Theyre also slightly lower voltage per cell but thats not really a big factor here, might just cause you to run more cells in series and less in parallel

primal laurel
#

tesla has already been using LFP batteries for a long time, that chemistry is only getting better. Until something even better comes a long and then we switch to that. And so the train goes on an on

sudden forge
#

and yeah a lot of the standard range teslas are LFP

#

whereas the long range teslas are ncm still

#

pretty much everything from Byd is LFP

forest edge
#

without decent range it's just a city dweller

#

unless they somehow manage to cram in more universal chargers everywhere

sudden forge
#

GM and ford have both just made large investments towards LFP battery production, but dont yet have vehicles with it

forest edge
#

the article I posted earlier stated they are kind of shifting into hybrids

sudden forge
#

and pretty much any time you see lithium referred to in solar energy storage systems for homes, its usually lfp

#

But lets face it, in a stationary application like a home battery, does it matter if you can store less in a given volume when you can just throw more volume at it? Safety benefit more than outweighs the size penalty there

primal laurel
#

it's the blue LED all over again

sudden forge
#

Ultimately I dont think battery chemistry is gonna be 1 size fits all anyway

#

I know lots of hype exists for sodium ion, despite it having plenty of its own major disadvantages in current gen 1 cells.
But it is cheap. So maybe that'll make a nice little market segment for affordable EVs.

LFP, great mid range option but just wont have that roadtrip excellence a more traditional lithium ion cell can have.

Then lithium ion has its stability issues. But nothings gonna beat it for distance travelled

#

And then atop that, I dont think BEV is the only solution to a greener future either

#

even today in our predominantly ICE world, we have petrol, diesel and small amounts of LPG

forest edge
#

it's still 8-10 years for battery replacement

sudden forge
#

Fuel in an ICE motor isnt even 1 size fits all

forest edge
#

and that depends how you drive your car

sudden forge
#

CEO where I work has seen something like 10% degredation on his pre-production tesla roadster

#

14 years and over 100000 miles

forest edge
#

the car is a clock the second the battery for it was created.. even before the vehicle is built lol

#

thats another thing I don't like.. even if you don't drive the thing.. the clock is still ticking down

sudden forge
#

THough the gen 1 nissan leaf and a few other vehicles rip through their batteries

#

The prius hybrids did too, though at least functioned with a knackered pack

#

Basically had to truly kill the pack before it'd stop working

#

The leaf didnt have active cooling in its battery pack initially though, so they were basically just cooking the cells under load

primal laurel
#

about 10% after 300.000 km according to tesla

sudden forge
#

most today have active cooling and heating of the packs

#

Even quite a few of the plugin hybrids are active cooled/heated batteries

#

Rare that the heater is used for a huge amount, the warmth just from their internal resistance causing some heating under load is often enough to get them going in extreme cold, so while it might heat a tad if charging in extreme cold or when starting up the vehicle, it wont keep the heater on permanently

#

Case in point for EVs in cold countries. 82.4% of new cars sold in norway in 2023 were electric. Norway has some pretty harsh winters, yet theyre all on board with EVs and heat pumps

#

and thats 100% electric vehicles, hybrids are not counted

primal laurel
#

Norway has a lot of very cheap, green hydropower

forest edge
#

norwegians sanity was always in question too

sudden forge
#

it does, its more that a lot of folk claim EVs dont work in cold weather and heat pumps dont work for home heating in cold weather

#

and norway would like a word with those folk

#

but hey, while I did briefly own an EV

#

I currently drive around a modified 22 year old turbocharged petrol subaru with a manual gearbox

#

So make of that what you will

I know this is an old message (found it in search), could you elaborate a little on this? Looking into multi-room audio solutions. I originally set up mopidy and snapcast clients, but I prefer LMS because each 'client' can play its own music source as well as joining a group. I think mopidy was the 'player' and you enabled clients to stream, so I think only one source could play something at the same time, harder to play different things in different rooms.

forest edge
#

I wonder how many kids youtube is the father to

gleaming crater
gleaming crater
#

The sqeezelite clients are named after zones in my house so LMS is only really playing to one output, multiple clients on snap can 'tune' into it

fading ice
#

Ah, so 2 zones can't different sources then, is that correct?

gleaming crater
#

Here's the snippet of my snap server config

#

Fun fact tho, dryout_ms doesn't seem to actually work with squeezelite sources and snap thinks it's always 'playing' but that seems to be some kinda bug that isn't fixed with snap in general

#

I've got another automation to watch my LMS sources directly and switch snap sources on demand

gleaming crater
#

And it's a bit long but here is my automation to automatically switch sources between local and 'all' automatically https://dpaste.org/sOOZF
