Oh, they want me to change plans to a shittier plan that costs more and has less perks for this deal too
Screw that
Have a โฌ500 nothing phone 2. It's pretty great for the price
waiting for nothing to rug pull once again
I like my phone. ยฏ_(ใ)_/ยฏ
damn. had to cancel that order.. seems even using it through USB I am still stuck setting it up through PPP in opensense so that device wouldn't change anything for me
Do you run opnsense bare metal?
yes
sounds like you should complain on the forums
its a freebsd thing i think
someone needs to pay for it
Rug pull?
its the same guys from op no?
lol when looking up if opnsense had added any ability to use something other than PPP with my 4g card I run across my own post helping others set it up by PPP
No different company but same founder
usually thats where issues come from
From what?
Honestly don't have a clue what you're talking about ๐
mostly just about it becoming scummy and low quality over time
starting with the opx stuff gotten worse. beta testing software youd not receive on your device, various hw issues and software that never gotten fixed
no idea who they found to pay for their 12th gen rebrand
its pretty sad because it started pretty nice
even early OP phones had questionable QA. But their price made up for it. But once they started charging the same as others ๐คท
what you dont want your camera to be unusable after recording two minutes?
its just 970 bucks!
Nothing phone is not one plus though
its pretty much the same concept agin
No it's not
they even re did the invite thing for initial orders

This is what happens when you put your airport on a narrow-ass strip of land directly exposed to wind from the southern ocean
Wellington Airport at it's best... gusty northwesters up to 60knots were the best show in town on Friday January 13th 2012. Note: The AirNZ 73 retunred to AKL and how stable are those A320s!
50mph winds is just a regular day at torontos airport. ive seen some good sideways landings especially with smaller planes
You can make it more interesting when you put mountains around the airport
You mean like most Norwegian airports

@clear ferry going to call BS on these videos, clearly can't be any boeing planes
There are no bits falling off or missing in any videos
Don't worry, it's just the Instagram real_working_plane filter
Maybe it got worse and the parts already fail to fall off

Nice
@solar zealot @iron granite you are both probably right ๐
Oh no that means we will get murdered
MO is giving us the ability to challenge where the fed government broadband expansion funding goes and this is what it says for my barn
so jumping on this
I want FTTB fiber to the barn
its marked as underserved which means it's not broadband
they call area/addresses as either served, underserved, unserved and the latter two only qualify for the funding
Apparently we have no definition for broadband, but the report says 96.7% of all houses have access to minimum 100Mbit
And 95.1% of all houses have access to minimum 1000Mbit
they will do the same eventually but it be through wireless means for rural areas like my barn most likely
Apparently our national average speed in 2023 was 300Mbit
Up from 268Mbit in 2022
A can't even get less than 300/300 from my current provider
And since they are ripping all copper out of the ground DSL isn't much of an option anyway, and DOCSIS only lives for apartment buildings in city areas
I've had access to 1Gb+ speeds since 2017 so I imagine probably the majority of Americans do now
just how many diffrent providers does norway have?
Yeah, I've had gigabit access since 2015, swedes have since 2005 I believe
15-20 or so for broadband
Depending if you count mobile broadband too
those are mostly sub companies under a larger isp?
I'd consider my cell connection broadband where I live.
Do they all run their own wires or are the wires leased?
Wires are mostly from the two legacy providers, that had monopoly, but they are obliged by law to share their lines to anyone who wants to provide a service in an area they cover
Oh interesting, Norway is way different than us in the regard. We only have three ISPs
and I think it's the same ones for mobile as well
and cable TV
Cell phones are t-mobile, at&t, and verizon
If I count the regional ones I'm probably up to 50-70 @orchid rose a lot of power companies offer FTTH in their area
Why aren't they just bought up by the bigger players?
Some are
But usually they still own the lines, and then let the bigger player use them to deliver a central service
Because that's the shitty bit to do
I've heard of the top 7 and a couple of the rest
Oh, there's also u.s. mobile for cell service but they only serve like two states
Nevermind, they finally got bought up too
k
<@&330946878646517761> thanks ๐

No idea who that was.
Yea, seemed pretty random.
Can't think of anybody I've pissed off who would swear at me in Croatian.
Croatoan
Ah, misread it. Translate says Croatian
wtf just saw my phone blocked a spam sms.. first time I ever saw that
Mine even blocks legitimate sms sometimes
then again 99% of sms I get is just confirmation codes or mfa
Mine blocks political texts and those stupid fake package delivery notices
The notices I get aren't real, they say I have a package held at the warehouse then link to some sketchy URL shortener
At one point I was getting like 10 of those a day
i'm glad I don't normally get spam lol
And I get the political crap just because I'm registered to vote with my cell phone
Not an issue when we don't get package apps to begin with
Ah, we can use phone for identification when we vote
But not vote with it
I can't vote with my phone, I just meant the phone number I have on my registration card is my cell phone number so political spammers can get it.
I can use my phone as ID though, never tried for voting
They mail everyone ballots here and we mail them back
Don't understand how they can get your phone number
It doesn't look like it is anymore but voter registration info here used to be public
under certain circumstances like during an election year campaigns can get ahold of mailing lists etc
I remember looking up my voter registration info once and getting it with just my name
I have to provide name, address
I was able to look it up now again but it needed my DOB and zip code too
If someone has that they probably have my phone number
and dob, that too
but all that information is available in chunks by area for campaign reasons
I only ever put my landline number down for anything tho.. which is why spam on my cell is so rare
and with my home phone coming through spectrum that line gets filtered automatically by spectrum
Heh, just realized I'm tracking the partial eclipse on my hue motion sensor.
Messaging voters by their personal phone number breaks a few privacy laws here
Politicans made political campaigns exempt from things like do not call lists here
Not just a few, probably all of them
Here we can opt out for any advertising or sales by law and it's a national register
I did that like 20 years ago
so many law agencies, so little law
what a weak eclipse for my area lol
Didn't get that strong here either
they predicted 89% for us but sure didn't seem that way
Nothing comes anywhere near me through at least 2100
I saw the full eclipse in 2017, it went right over my grandparents' house.
The partial eclipse is shit compared to it
god forbid you cali's lose the sunlight during the daytime amirite? lol
I mostly just said that to stir shit with someone who isn't here
We have a reputation to uphold
really need to add in European in there otherwise it's just misinformation
Seriously cutting into my tanning
two tonned?
Maybe a little overweight, but not that bad.
Landed in Vancouver shortly before that one. Got some photos with nice crescent-shaped shadows from light shining through a tree, but not close enough for a noticeable change in brightness
Has anyone had their Google Assistant suddenly switch voices?
Like to a different regional accent, or swapped genders, or?
Swapped genders. I can't even remember what I had set it on, but the other day it started talking in different voice
Haven't had that one, but I do occasionally get something that is "British/South African mash-up" rather than the usual not-quite-Australian
That's weird, I've never had that issue
The friend you shouldn't worry about?
lol @ not quite Australian. Sums up a lazy approach to a NZ accent
The problem is I think it listens in Australian too
Well it is the better accent of the two
I was trying to send my account manager from Dell a txt while driving last night, it made one of the more amazing mistakes.
Like I get it when it's a homophone, like when I confused the shit out of one of my teammates when I said "draft" and it wrote "draught".
But the problem was I couldn't hear that it had it wrong when I asked it to send "have you got 10 minutes to talk about renderwall" (I work in VFX, so that's our pretty much standard industry name for our compute farm), and it sent a message reading "have you got 10 minutes to talk about Brenda Wall"

mmmm stroopwaffel
Just remember "cunt" is a term of affection, it's not as dirty of a word as in the rest of the English-speaking world
does it make you feel all warm and gooey inside when you hear it? lol

Anyone know if Samsung has any built-in alternative to Airplay I could emulate for phones to cast to?
Closest I can think of is a chromecast but I don't have anything HDMI where I want this running
Wait what, you want to cast from a Samsung? To what? Or to a Samsung from what?
From a samsung phone to a receiver
BubbleUPNP will do it but I wanted something that'd work on friends' phones without installing apps
That'll just cast to an airplay receiver, of which there are emulators I can run
And Bluetooth wouldn't reach across my house I don't think
You'd have to setup some Miracast Receiver
But the protocol is open mostly in name
It's apparently so complex and full of edge cases, that there's really only Samsung and Google implementations.
Maybe LG? Though they might just use Google's
Hm, maybe it's usable now? https://github.com/albfan/miraclecast
I should try at some point
Steel toes and shins. Easy
It is decently easy with Chromecast
I've used Miracast a bunch. Never tried it to a chromecast, I have a few miracast dongles and my TVs all have it
I had a miracast receiver working on an RPi once but it wasn't great.
Does anyone know of any local / dockerized apps that can index all your local files based on content and make it searchable?
Might as well use my GPU for some fun
As in, read documents etc
Not just file names
Blah, this stupid pi zero can't even output to two audio sinks at once without stuttering
I never saw any actual casting irl other than airplay, chrome thingies always just played streams by themselves but never have I seen a android user casual cast its home screen on a tv
You can cast your screen and audio to chromecasts with the google home app but they have their own protocol that's imo kind of crap. Miracast is better but afaik chromecasts don't do that.
The chromecast one was pretty low bitrate in my experience
I use paperless, primarily as index/ingress of any paperwork I scan
Photoprism is neat
I really like Immich.
Mostly because it makes it easy to import and index local libraries without having to move the files.
I setup photoprism when I started syncing the library to the PC, So it's my ingress and I like that it just consumes an input folder^^
I wanted to use paperless for all the mail you get, but then I realized I get like three pieces per year that I want to saveโฆ max
So I never bothered
Yeah. I already have 14 years of photos sortedโฆ
I'm using Photoprism with an existing setup, none of those were moved
Given that too is decades of photos I'd have been rather annoyed ๐
I also use it for all the PDF receipts, invoices, etc - auto-consuming from my email
Pretty sure I got both of those recommendations from you^^
I need to configure the mail consumption
But when I last looked into it, it was slightly silly with how it marked them done
On the email side, or the Paperless side?
With Paperless all incoming stuff gets tagged so I can review them - it's pretty normal for it to mess up the "correspondent" on complex stuff
I at least think it was paperless
Wanted to use IMAP "read" and couldn't do some less invasive tracking
Anyone known with Dimo? Or anyone driving a car with an app to unlock doors etc?
an app for car doors?
Not only for car doors lol
I drive a Volkswagen and it shows me the status of my battery, if doors are locked etc.
But Dimo uses the API of the volkswagen app to put all the data in one place and it also gives options to lower insurance etc
But it can also use any of the other manufacturers , its pretty cool and you get paid in tokens for data
Well better get a cut from what manufacturers already sell ๐
More like getting consent for peanuts
If there is no integration or addon for it, stuff gonna be difficult
What do you mean?
It's either you managing to do it with scripts / rest sensors or building an integration/ addon yourself
From recent history, certain manufacturers dislike non official app usage so stuff can break for the worse
nah. They are tricking you into selling more data
Lime Temu
LPT: replace twitter.com by twittpr.com or fxtwitter.com and you get better embedding in discord
Twitter still not dead?
nope
Unfortunate
Is the car actually white?
yea
That would irritate me if the app didn't match the car ๐คฃ
I have previously, had a Kia Ceed hybrid as a works car
Now I have a very environmentally friendly 2.5 liter Volvo, only ๐

wow spacebar acting up today i see
holy crap it just did not want to work
Man, I keep having to fend off the urge to purchase something like a Lenovo Thinclient that I could mount on my network rack and use to run my Ubiquiti controller and Pi-hole
why not a pi?
Friends don't let friends use pis
All the Pi's I have are probably about 10 years old. Except for my HA Yellow
model b could probably handle pi-hole
I'll have to see if I can find what models I have. I know I had/have an OG somewhere
a 3b or 3b+ would handle both easily enough
I was using one of them before to run my ZWave and Zigbee servers in my last house and it had serious issues.
Constantly disconnecting
in fact I think there are scripts out there for setting up both ubiquiti and pi-hole in one click on a rpi
I do have an old laptop I might flash linux on and use. The one I'm currently using for my ubiquiti controller has a dead battery so if the power cuts it immediately turns off, and it's so borked that it doesn't seem to reboot properly so I have to go manually do it every time which is a pain.
you still on that bs?
You still think it's on hardware? ๐ฎ

i just had my first 5v wall wart go bad
Breaking Bad?
all this pi talk reminded me i should update my model b acting a print server.. can certianly see that speed difference lol
I tried setting up a Pi Zero to stream to a bluetooth speaker and out of HDMI at the same time, it'll do either or but can't handle both sinks at once.
Also Logitech Media Server was disappointing.
I have multi out audio PIs, but Snapcast is my last mile, they have run a target per audio device
Tho trying to run BT on a pi zero can be a pain because the wifi and bt are fighting
I was just running out of CPU. Pulse and pipewire both eat a ton (relatively) when doing combined sinks.
Were you trying to play to both at the same time in sync?
Also isn't alsa less overhead for that kinda thing?
I don't know how to split one stream to two devices with alsa, never tried.
But I don't believe alsa has any bluetooth support
At least not reasonable bluetooth support
That's why I went snapcast
I can spin up multiple client services for each audio device
And it has all the settings for delay per device
I can throw more pis at it, my source is pcm getting dumped out over udp multicast
But apparently all I have left are non-wireless Zeros
You can do the same thing in snapcast land with this https://github.com/stijnvdb88/Snap.Net
A cross-platform control client and player for https://github.com/badaix/snapcast - stijnvdb88/Snap.Net
Scream is about as basic as it gets. I was going to set up something to tie them into HA, probably a python mqtt thing to allow setting the volume and starting/stopping scream
Lol there is already a full snapcast integration for HA, I have my nodes fade up/down with the lights automatically
It's pretty easy to change source on a device with a service call, I bump my bedroom player between music and a networked sleep machine feed
I have a windows vm set up running amazon music dumping it out with scream
How well does it stay in sync between nodes?
I tried logitech media server on it but I kept getting pops in the audio when I had three or more destinations synced
That's because LMS is a single-threaded perl app lol
I've yet to find a better last mile over snapcast so far, it just works
Alright so far but I only have two on it now. The Windows and Linux clients don't sync up due to different buffer sizes.
But it's multicast so the same packet is going to all the destinations at the same time
You get to configure a server buffer with snapcast and configure each client +/- however many ms you want from server for playback
The scream receiver has options for configuring the buffer
It was 50ms by default
Which I assume means all clients are within 50ms of eachother at worst
I think that's time from packet to playback?
It keeps 50ms of audio buffer for dejittering
But the packets are all multicast udp so the only delay should be wireless retransmissions at worst
And if audio is missed scream just drops it, it doesn't try to play every frame
Yeah snapcast skips frames that arrive after play time
I'm running 64ms with tcp unicast too
and like 10 nodes lol
I think I'm going to end up with 6 when I'm done
My shower, bedroom, livingroom, office, backyard, and garage
As long as you can get them all in sync, my zones overlap enough I can't tolerate mismatched playback
I think I can get it working. I might be stuck with pulse for doing latency adjustments though.
One of my stereos was adding like .5s
I really hate dealing with pulse's security and per-user daemons though, makes making a systemd service to run an audio app way too tricky.
I can't wait for pipewire to be more widespread
I used to run the pulse server on a different box than I did my main computing on. It was a weird setup
Thatโs the other reason I prefer alsa, itโs not mad you want to run a service
I messed with mpd/mopidy but they are kinda meh

I never tried mpd, if I had a local library I'd be more interested in these solutions but it's been a decade since I ripped a CD at this point.
Heh, closest to a reel to reel I've used is a cassette.
there will likely be at least some new cars that have a cd player in it for the next 30+ years simply because there hasn't been another media invented and one that will likely ever replace usb and require a special player
Yea, the format wars are dead. I think we might see one more bluray edition but I imagine it'll be unchallenged.
Another thing us millennials killed
Heh, likewise. I pretty much had to re-learn how to rip CDs, because likewise I think about 2006 would have been the last time I did it. My partner signed up for something and they mailed a CD. Like who does that?
Even had to go out, and buy the most twenty-dollar-est USB DVD drive that my local computer store had, because no computer we own still had an optical drive
I have far more CD drives than actual CDs at this point
Mostly because of old video game systems
And because I never had a large collection of CDs, I just knew somebody who worked at a radio station and went and ripped a bunch of discs there.
Alsa just gets mad when you want to run more than one source per sink
apt remove --purge pulseaudio

No i mean apt

Numerology (known before the 20th century as arithmancy) is the belief in an occult, divine or mystical relationship between a number and one or more coinciding events. It is also the study of the numerical value, via an alphanumeric system, of the letters in words and names. When numerology is applied to a person's name, it is a form of onomancy. It is often associated with astrology and other divinatory arts.[2]

vinyls never really went away. CDs though...

even newer songs have been released on vinyl for a long while

Some people also like the physical act of playing records. Yes it's vastly inconvenient having to get up every 20 minutes to change/flip the damn thing, but it's a ritual more than anything
I also like to annoy the purists by pointing out to them that my turntable is connected into a Sonos Connect, so the very first thing it encounters is an analogue to digital converter
But hey, I can have it playing in every room of the house
Nothing wrong with enjoying that and I probably would too. I just dislike the bs that it's somehow higher quality
@orchid rose since you like pasta. ๐
I kinda hate it
So you don't like to walkabout every 30 minutes?
Honestly, once an ~hour to change a CD I wouldn't remotely care. But I have a number of vinyl albums that only have 3 songs (13-16 minutes) per side
Having to get up THREE TIMES to listen to one album in its entirety does get a little tedious
I hear you. I mainly play 12" remixes. So it's every 5 minutes lol

I'm just confused about the shipping process. Fastship says it was delivered yesterday, but it never left Thailand.
Also FastShip says they delivered it to FastShip.
I'm wondering if there was a mistake or this is just poor wording/mistranslation. Is this what your experience was like?
Right. I find it hard to believe that they could ship it from Thailand to the US in 25 hours

Damn, HACS is getting so much attention from core developers these past weeks. I wonder what's going on ๐
is it? where?
Just saw a lot of GitHub activity: Franck, Erik, Martin, Paulus...
There were some non-threadsafe operations in some popular integrations, which might lead to crashes since the recent performance increases in HA.

So it was a nice move, that some core devs gave some advice to fix those issues.
Some other activity might also be unrelated to that ๐
Hi All,
I hope you're well. I'm from the University of Portsmouth, here in the UK.
I am currently writing my university dissertation on 'Users Attitudes and Perceptions Towards IoT Privacy' and with this I am collecting primary research in the form of a questionnaire. I would greatly appreciate anyone's participation.
https://forms.gle/tx9W1FNWCKhPvyNf7 (10 mins) approved by @lone dagger via email
Please let me know if you have any follow up questions/concerns. ๐
This study is concerned with userโs attitudes and perceptions towards the Internet of Things (IoT) sector and specifically, the privacy aspect and data collection of smart home devices.
Please feel free to read through the Participation Information Sheet for more details and contact either myself or my supervisor for any queries.

Just a general bit of feedback, I think the questions are too open ended. They are very hard to answer. But perhaps that was on purpose
Hi Stefan, thank you for your message. The questionnaire follows an existing study and was intentionally designed like this to compare the previous dataset.
However, I would be very open to specifics as I can include this in the conclusions I draw on the questionnaires design.
I think you should have given some examples or a definition of what you would consider an IoT device. Or even better, let someone pick a few device types and answer specific questions about those. For example the question 'How do your IoT devices work and how do you use them in your daily life?', I have no idea how to answer that. I have dozens of devices, and how I use them depends on what its function is. And then 'What data do your devices collect?', do you mean usage data? Or sensor data? Do you want me to list all data sources from all devices I have? 'How would you feel if someone else knew about this data?', well that depends entirely on which data we're talking about. Would I care about someone knowing what temperature my attic is? Probably not a lot. But camera images? Probably would care a lot more
Yea, no offense but this survey seems to have been written by somebody largely unfamiliar with IoT, especially Home Assistant.
The questions make sense when you're asking about a single device, like a thermostat or camera, but 'IoT' can be literally any device humans have ever made that's been computerized and made remotely controllable.
How do your IoT devices work
I think this one is either going to get you 'I don't know' or 'That's too long to explain in a text field, go read the docs'
Or "how deep of an explanation would you like about the functioning of class A vs class C LoRa devices" ๐คช

Hm it looks like that Shelly plugs dislike measuring dishwashers
plugs? as in the plug in a wall socket?
I LOVE it
Yes
this one of those portable dishwashers?
Dislike how?
It stopped measuring
Or well, it dropped off the wifi
Theoretically it should be completely in spec operations with no switching at all
Have you tried lifting it up again?
Well my non raccoon body doesn't fit where the plug is
At least it didn't set on fire, that also seems like a popular outcome for their sockets iirc
Lol hehe
Very frustrating tbh, this is the dark side of home automation
I might need to put in the em mini thing, but I kinda don't want to crawl in garbage bin space

I think I am going to end up with one or two of those 6 channel esp boards and using cts
We redid the electric so everything that I would want to know the usage of (or automate things based on what it is doing) has its own fuse
But I would like a socket for the cooker hood, to put the ventillation system into overpressure mode
Or a shelly mini type thing
I may need to pick up a couple plugs and sockets and make my own measurement ones with the em mini stuff
Don't need the switching at all
some shelly plugs have real bad wifi rx/tx
had to replace 2 of them in specific locations, the replacements worked fine and the bad ones also did fine in other places
sounds more like a fluke situation.. sometimes lemons are created
Any that are known to be good?
I guess it doesn't even have to be wifi
Just one hint of what the culprit could be
could be something in the path of the signal too. ran into some weird objects that made great wifi blockers that was just sitting on a self a few times
apparently today it will be my o key
would love to know the reason behind this keyboard
It sometimes happens that you lose signal strength due to reflections at specific locations in a room. For example I have this location in the attic under a sloped roof which basically has no WiFi but the rest of the room does fine
Oh lmao I know what happend
Please, tell me more
Iโd love to learn how wifi works
We had a short and tried to figure out where, likely trying to power the circuit multiple times did reset the plugs
Weird that it didn't happen to all of them just two
would have been nice if ha would have told me they be offline of over a week
using the hook or mqtt?
the official integration
ah
it always annoys me with "couldnt update" 79813 times a day so i end up just ignoring whatever it says
well this time it wouldnt have been wrong
I had switched to just using mqtt awhile back when the integration was still somewhat new and having issues.. never went back
it still has a couple issues
mostly keeping track of energy consumption
well that may be more caused by the plug reporting it wrong but still that could be fixed
most of my shellys are the pucks. only have 1 plug in the barn. so far it seems to work fine
i can honestly say i love the ESPhome add-on ๐ i installed a Emporia Vue2 loaded with ESPhome, and HA picked it right up! the only hard part was working inside my workshop power panel, but i got it done and everything works perfectly ๐

Anyone know a good place to ask ffmpeg questions/is good at ffmpeg?
I'm streaming two PCM streams from pipes, mixing them, and sending them back out another pipe. When one of the pipes is silent I'm having to pad it with dummy frames, or ffmpeg blocks waiting on it. To my understanding aresample should add dummy frames of just silence, but it's not for me.
My ffmpeg command is
['ffmpeg',
'-use_wallclock_as_timestamps', 'true', '-f', 's24le', '-ac', '2', '-ar', '48000', '-i', '/tmp/ffmpeg-fifo-1',
'-use_wallclock_as_timestamps', 'true', '-f', 's24le', '-ac', '2', '-ar', '48000', '-i', '/tmp/ffmpeg-fifo-2',
'-filter_complex', '[0]aresample=async=1[a0],[1]aresample=async=1[a1],[a0][a1]amix', '-y',
'-f', 's24le', '-ac', '2', '-ar', '48000', '/tmp/ffmpeg-fifo-in']
I could probably concoct something, but would have to think about it
I had to do something similar for video, when I was combining two variable frame rate videos together and needed them in wall clock sync
These are raw pcm streams from two different computers I'm taking in over udp with python and putting into a pipe for ffmpeg
Whenever one gets 12 packets ahead of the other I repeat the last packet the lagging interface got 12 times to catch it back up
For reasons I'm unsure of the packet I replay has to be replayed a multiple of 3 times, even though each packet holds 24 stereo frames
Hacky test code https://pastebin.com/3GKssrNi
This listens on UDP for 48KHz 24bit stereo PCM frames being sent at it with a currently ignored 5 byte header, filters them into pipes based on source IP, mixes them with ffmpeg, then slaps on a hard-coded header and forwards the mixed stream onto a receiver.
Specifically it's a multi-source mixer for Scream https://github.com/duncanthrax/scream
If the streams quit sending ffmpeg just hangs so I kill it in that case and reopen it when I detect data again, heh. That also means I always have at least one source to sync the rest to.
the ev buyer remorse is getting kind of funny now that more and more people are in the battery replacement phase

Isn't that the same principle Tesla did? Sure feels like it if you sit in a model 3
I don't really agree with that. I think it was just one's vision of what the future automobile would be like.. not like a cell phone inspired anything

unless you want to seem clueless, yes.
That's about the same as both Google's and Apple's integration with car dashes are trying to
And similar to cars running android as OS for their infotainment systems
having goole and apple in what they call the infotament center is not the same as what xiaomi is doing
What do you think the difference is to what the article describes?
if we are comparing just tesla, tesla would be the closet in terms of how intergrated most of the car is to that system.. but every other vehicle.. no not even close
I don't know how integrated teslas are to the same computer in the sense where if one fails.. the whole car is just dead but xiamoi are that intergrated
thats why I made the every 2 year comment above
The article doesn't suggest that in the least bit
do you have anything that supports your assumption that Xiaomi merged their critical and non-critical functions on the hardware layer?
first of all it was a joke but there are videos online that showcase how your phone plays a vital role in connection to the car
one would hope the car could run without you having a phone.. but this day and age I would not be shocked if it couldn't and even the article lists the specs of car.. it sounds like a rolling phone lol
apparently you can get those in germany.. so get one and let us know
soo, you are clueless
Car inside looks like a tesla, filled with a giant touch screen
because it has a screen?
The minimalist singular touch screen to do everything
Also yes, if the tesla bricks and update the car is undrivable
its not like xiaomi hasn't tried to copy other things before
but I don't think they look the same
Oh didn't realise it has a dash screen, then thats better than the tesla lol
if anything you would say they did try and copy the tesla lol
Otherwise very very similar
yea it looks like it lol https://www.reddit.com/r/TeslaLounge/comments/112oqln/new_tesla_model_3_bricked_after_update/
teach someone to buy a fancy ev amirite
older ones.. but the future looks bleak
Newer ones too aren't bricked from updates
Or at least can have automatic updates turned off
you can't even drive a hybrid when the battery goes bad
no part of ev or the like sounds reliable lol
No surprise if the battery in an EV goes bad you can't drive it
Just like if a cars engine goes bad you can't drive it...
Probably depends on how the hybrid operates. If it charges the battery using the engine (and so is electric drive completely) then could make sense
If its just dual power, then its stupid I do agree
EVs have better reliability than ICE, since it's just way less moving parts in the engines
Modern car software setups are a different thing, but lower class EVs don't encumber themselves with as much either
well when $$ is involved the definition of reliability somewhat changes
I have less invested in my truck at least in terms of repairs/maintenance over the last 20 years than most ev's first battry change cost lol
ev costs haven't really gone down either in regardless to replacement etc
purchase prices may have but thats it
If you want to compare running costs, you have to make an actual calculation of running costs that take fuel vs. electricity price per kilometer and driven distance into account ๐คท
even those old leaf batteries still go for around 16k
there is no doubt in fuel saving an ev will be cheaper.. but the question really boils down to are you actually saving in the end? if everything that either needs to be replaced or fixed on an ev is so much more expensive than a gas car those savings in fuel cost dry up quick
Do the maths on cars you care about ๐คท
But if you try to compare repair cost of an ICE against battery replacement of EV you aren't doing it either
there is a lot of variables at play
if I ever bought an ev it wouldn't be till someone has had one from a company I plan to buy from for at least half the time I have owned a gas vehicle and still say it was a worthy investment
car makes an awfully big paperweight
You're going to be driving EV one way or another, it's just a matter of time
not necessarily ev's are not getting the good rap they had hoped
hell i think some of our car manfactures are even dropping thier ev lines
heh not just ours.. it seems
i'll probably be dead long before anyone is forced to drive an ev
Well, old people might not
you just jinxed yourself
Which ones?
There's nothing there about dropping EV lines
i mean scaling back..
And yeah every new technology goes through hypecycles, nothing new
Idk why last year was so good
way to be optimistic
I wonder if you'll ever be able to make a statement that you can support on the first try ๐
I would ask why you are always so angry but we already know the answer
Where do you see someone be angry?
same place you get the notion where a statement that starts with "i think" is somehow meant to be solid fact lol
so yourself?
case in point
Kind of have to be if you see how much research and development is being done by companies and uni's on improving EVs
I have no doubts that at some point we will move off fossils fuels. but transitioning to full on ev is a long ways away still imo
when you see emergency vehicles switch over to full ev then you can be hopeful
We're much closer than you think
The US will take longer ofcourse because of your strong lobbyists and oil addiction
Like a lot of the Chinese brands and their battery tech
https://the-riotact.com/act-fire-rescue-welcomes-first-all-electric-fire-truck/720056
Already happening
having a few is not the same as replacing all
there are already police ev's etc
but only a few
like 2 in a fleet etc
All the buses here are already electric
yea we seen plenty of those on fire
None of them caught fire
none of yours or no ev buses?
None of the ones that drive here
well there are plenty around the world that has. so I guess the clock is ticking lol
gasoline vehicles are much more likely to catch fire so we're good
you would hope so comparing something with a flammable liquid vs not but the fact that ev is not 0 chance says more in itself lol
what does that say?
well since ev cars 50/50 catch fire when completely unattended and not involved in an accident while gas cars really only ever catch fire in an accident
i'll stick with gas
don't want to die in my sleep because my ev decided to burn up in the garage lol
wtf
you thought they only caught fire during an accident?
you just keep saying the most random things without backing it up. Makes discussion pretty pointless
so im out
im in research lol
Nah, this channel is our source for your imagination ๐
What does that say?
yet you never heard of an ev catching fire in a non accident scenario?
what do you reasearch? poop?
Electrical engineering
watch the news.. you are embarrassing yourself
Though the catching on fire randomly is actually valid https://www.nfpa.org/news-blogs-and-articles/blogs/2022/11/28/evs-and-parking-structures mentiones it on the side
Shouldn't be hard to find actual incidents
research how to google
the news =\= statistics
hopeless
it's a big world, shit always happens. Doesnt say much, its about statistics
I just love that before the blaze was even extinguished, social media lit up about EV fire hazards in the Luton airport carpark fire
Transpires the vehicle that "caused" the blaze was non electrified
And bonus, wasn't in a collision
Albeit, it was running at the time rather than going boom while unattended and stationary
?
BMW have had a recall on gasoline fires that could be triggered without the engine being running though
lol the loophole
The BMW one just required electricals to be on
Likewise plenty of gasoline fires over the years from dodgy fuel lines
See ford, Hyundai and Honda recalls
non accident related ice fires here are so rare that I don't even remember the last time i've read about one.. here as in my local area.. not the country
what do you think you are saying by saying you are in research? That you are removed from reality?
thank the ethanol for that
10% ethanol is basically highest you can get here and a lot is only 5, does a lot to hold it at bay
The ford fire is on an e85 rated line too
Metal
ethanol eats through the rubber they use for the fuel lines.. not implying that is the reason for the fires.. just making a joke about it lol
Ford's is a metallic line that cracks due to thermal cycling
you can chalk most ice fires up to negligent car care.. non accident related ones
thats kind of diffrent than ev fires
All the brands I mentioned above had major recalls over somewhat spontaneous ignition events outside of typical maintenance or collision
I've had the misfortune of being in a vehicle fire outside of collision
I live by a major trunk route through England too, again, once a year or so, you get vehicle fire, no collision
It's not that rare
that sucks.. but again.. that is something that was a design flaw or human direct cause. hard to compare that to ev fires
i guess inventing the lithium battery is a human cause lol
Most EVs default to not charging to 100% which does significantly reduce the risk
And many are switching chemistry entirely to LFP which is darn stable
Also just had first power cut in 6 months here yay \o/ it lasted all of 5 seconds
A few EVs are even doing the short range model as being LFP and the upgraded range model as being NCM. Which is then kinda amusing as the lfp models usually default to using 100% of the pack, the ncm doesn't. And the usable range on default settings ends up being pretty similar, though of course you have that option of juicing up the ncm further
Far from it
batteries have always had some con or another that has been hazardous to our health in one form or many. I don't see that ever changing so even if they lower the risk of spontaneous fires it will just be replaced with something else
though I guess they now have made a earth friendly liquid to combat lithium batteries
yea, far removed. Sounds about right
bet that crap will cost a crap ton for fire fighters to keep on stock
oh LFP disadvantage is really well known and straight forward
its something folk wont like, and Ive already alluded to
RANGE
fixed loads of the issues of traditional lithium ion or lithium polymer cells. Greener to produce, more stable, harder wearing, less flammable, wider temperature range, and in some cases more power dense
But less energy dense, quite a bit less
Basically you're looking at ~75%ish
Theyre also slightly lower voltage per cell but thats not really a big factor here, might just cause you to run more cells in series and less in parallel
tesla has already been using LFP batteries for a long time, that chemistry is only getting better. Until something even better comes a long and then we switch to that. And so the train goes on an on
and yeah a lot of the standard range teslas are LFP
whereas the long range teslas are ncm still
pretty much everything from Byd is LFP
without decent range it's just a city dweller
unless they somehow manage to cram in more universal chargers everywhere
GM and ford have both just made large investments towards LFP battery production, but dont yet have vehicles with it
the article I posted earlier stated they are kind of shifting into hybrids
and pretty much any time you see lithium referred to in solar energy storage systems for homes, its usually lfp
But lets face it, in a stationary application like a home battery, does it matter if you can store less in a given volume when you can just throw more volume at it? Safety benefit more than outweighs the size penalty there
it's the blue LED all over again
Ultimately I dont think battery chemistry is gonna be 1 size fits all anyway
I know lots of hype exists for sodium ion, despite it having plenty of its own major disadvantages in current gen 1 cells.
But it is cheap. So maybe that'll make a nice little market segment for affordable EVs.
LFP, great mid range option but just wont have that roadtrip excellence a more traditional lithium ion cell can have.
Then lithium ion has its stability issues. But nothings gonna beat it for distance travelled
And then atop that, I dont think BEV is the only solution to a greener future either
even today in our predominantly ICE world, we have petrol, diesel and small amounts of LPG
it's still 8-10 years for battery replacement
Fuel in an ICE motor isnt even 1 size fits all
and that depends how you drive your car
CEO where I work has seen something like 10% degredation on his pre-production tesla roadster
14 years and over 100000 miles
the car is a clock the second the battery for it was created.. even before the vehicle is built lol
thats another thing I don't like.. even if you don't drive the thing.. the clock is still ticking down
THough the gen 1 nissan leaf and a few other vehicles rip through their batteries
The prius hybrids did too, though at least functioned with a knackered pack
Basically had to truly kill the pack before it'd stop working
The leaf didnt have active cooling in its battery pack initially though, so they were basically just cooking the cells under load
about 10% after 300.000 km according to tesla
most today have active cooling and heating of the packs
Even quite a few of the plugin hybrids are active cooled/heated batteries
Rare that the heater is used for a huge amount, the warmth just from their internal resistance causing some heating under load is often enough to get them going in extreme cold, so while it might heat a tad if charging in extreme cold or when starting up the vehicle, it wont keep the heater on permanently
Case in point for EVs in cold countries. 82.4% of new cars sold in norway in 2023 were electric. Norway has some pretty harsh winters, yet theyre all on board with EVs and heat pumps
and thats 100% electric vehicles, hybrids are not counted
Norway has a lot of very cheap, green hydropower
norwegians sanity was always in question too
it does, its more that a lot of folk claim EVs dont work in cold weather and heat pumps dont work for home heating in cold weather
and norway would like a word with those folk
but hey, while I did briefly own an EV
I currently drive around a modified 22 year old turbocharged petrol subaru with a manual gearbox
So make of that what you will
ironic
I know this is an old message (found it in search), could you elaborate a little on this? Looking into multi-room audio solutions. I originally set up mopidy and snapcast clients, but I prefer LMS because each 'client' can play its own music source as well as joining a group. I think mopidy was the 'player' and you enabled clients to stream, so I think only one source could play something at the same time, harder to play different things in different rooms.
I wonder how many kids youtube is the father to
I run the normal snapcast setup for the 'last mile' with a service feeding all my client nodes around the house
But then my snapcast server spawns multiple squeezelite clients to recieve audio from an LMS server
The sqeezelite clients are named after zones in my house so LMS is only really playing to one output, multiple clients on snap can 'tune' into it
Ah, so 2 zones can't different sources then, is that correct?
Here's the snippet of my snap server config
Fun fact tho, dryout_ms doesn't seem to actually work with squeezelite sources and snap thinks it's always 'playing' but that seems to be some kinda bug that isn't fixed with snap in general
I've got another automation to watch my LMS sources directly and switch snap sources on demand
2 zones can't what?
And it's a bit long but here is my automation to automatically switch sources between local and 'all' automatically https://dpaste.org/sOOZF
