yeah I've seen the videos, just a different world
for me it would be unliveable but if you're used to relying on a car for everything you do for all your life...
At least my town is rather walkable/bikeable
Weak the for is walking?
my area is very bike friendly, and it makes some people angry. we added bike lanes to one street and people just park in them out of spite.
they are finally this year making barriers
Our city is busy fucking up the streets installing bike lanes (which I normally support), while we're in the middle of a crisis where 40% of our water supply is leaking
They really need to get their priorities in order, on that one. Do the bike lane if you have to dig up the road anyway, otherwise just fix the damn pipes
People are spiteful assholes who hate change, it's a wonder we got this far as a species
ha
I live on a street that got closed to thru traffic as part of the walkable city inititive
So they put these big temporary signs at the ends of the road saying as much
A couple people on this block apparently declared war on them and kept destroying or defacing the signs
Like allI can imagine is their tiny t-rex arms struggling to steer their oversized pickup around the barrier and getting mad every time
I don't see how having a quiet, residential neighborhood with very little thru traffic isn't a benefit to my property values
The weather isn't very bike friendly round here at the moment
Part of my commute home
Had to detour another route
Was clear on Saturday, just mucky. Back in Jan though, bring your swimsuit
I still want to buy an electric, my town is all hills
I built an electric
But I'm so tall it's gotta be entirely custom build
Nobody makes a bike for me except maybe the danes lol
Mine isn't anything fancy
Just took an existing bike I had and slapped a motor on it
But I don't tend to get much use out of it, my area is pretty flat and it didn't take too much to build the stamina to just ride around unassisted
My current bike doesn't have disc brakes and that's basically unworkable with the hills around me and an electirc
Eh, you'd be surprised what little difference the brakes make on an electric, and depending on the exact setup you go for, regen braking can be possible
Riding style factors in heavily. If you're building a higher power ebike to fly around at 30mph all the time, brakes are then gonna be a big factor
But if it's just a motor to assist you a bit at speeds a cyclist can naturally achieve, it's surprising how little brake you need
Good set of pads on V's can be fine
I've had every cyclist in seattle tell me you can't ride around here without disc brakes on an electric
Hills bigger problem than the motor
Our city is basically 100% hills.
My partner rides one of these https://www.niu.com/en/n-series/ which seems to cope pretty well with it.
Actually costs less than a lot of e-bikes, but has the same "light" licensing/registration requirements as a 50cc petrol scooter.
Sometimes I can't figure out what the companies that make bikes are smoking when it comes to those pricetags
Yeah I wouldn't lend any credence to that.
So, an ebike itself doesn't inherently need any more braking effort, the motor wouldn't be running while you're braking, it's just a regular bike at that point.
But the very real difference is the added weight of the motor and battery, so it is a heavier bike
Trying to stop a heavy bike (and a heavy me) on a steep grade with rubber eraser rim brakes doesn't sound fun
I'm 2m tall lol
But the motor and battery? My motor and it's gearbox is 3.6Kg, technically adds less weight to the bike than that as that's 3.6kg counting it's chain ring and the bike would have had a chain ring regardless
I weighed the battery on its own
3.5Kg
So in total I've only put 7kg on the bike over its non electrified form
What size motor tho
Everyone around here tends to go to the legal limit or over because of how steep the hillls are lol
It's a 500W motor, but the only difference between the 250, 500 and 750W models of that system is firmware and motor windings. They all weigh the same
Specifically there's a 36V and a 48V winding
Interesting
And then theres 250 and 500W firmwares for the 36V, and 500 and 750W firmwares for the 48
They pretty much just software current limit the things
yeah I hear people talking about firmware unlocks for bikes
You can push even higher wattages through it with custom firmwares but it can't cope thermally, even the unit I have gets a bit melty at 750W if pushed hard all day
Apparently a bbshd which is a fairly popular motor that'll do 750W all day (or higher) is about 5-6kg
Plus battery
But basically you're looking at adding 5-10kg to a bike unless you're going for bonkers setups
A popular brand around here is rad bikes and they seem way overbuilt lol
So weight wise. Brakes aren't as big a deal as you'd think. What luggage you're carrying could sometimes hit that difference
And rim brakes on hills, okay they're on full carbon race frames and tightly controlled diets etc, but you seen the tour de France?
Those guys will go flying down the Alps putting their brakes through far more work than a Seattle commuter on rim brakes
Those bikes aren't even in the same universe tho lol
Good pads and a little maintenance go a damn long way still
A lot of people when they think rim brakes are thinking oh no, plastic armed V brakes that are super bendy etc
But a lot can actually exceed the braking force of hydro disks
It's not like comparing disc to drum brakes lol
I do love my hydraulic discs on my ebike, mostly because of the lowered maintenance, things need bleeding once and that's it
But the rim brakes on my other bikes haven't been a problem
<@&330946878646517761> dog vomit in aisle 4
Lol thanks for cleaning up that eyesore
I was going to electrify this bike
but honestly, been doing alright enough on improving my fitness anyway, that I am kinda just appreciating that thing as it is
Converting it to an ebike would make a bigger difference to its weight than most bikes, it just doesnt weigh anything in first place
Things all of 10.5kg
and fits in my car which my ebike doesnt very easily
Reason #203 why you don't use cloud connected cameras lol
Wait this happened again? I was just talking about this the other day with someone
their RCA seemed weird:
The incident was caused by a third-party caching client library that was recently integrated into our system. This client library received unprecedented load conditions caused by devices coming back online all at once. As a result of increased demand, it mixed up device ID and user ID mapping and connected some data to incorrect accounts.
I guess it was some kind of race condition?
or hash collision?
the intern who "wrote the code" found the code off tumblr instead of stackoverflow
my first edge cache?
Stupid idea for the day: Put a ring of argb leds under the inside lip of a toilet bowl and a ring of microphones along with it and make it track the noise and light up where you pee
Some bar might buy something like that as an attraction
Or like runway lighting for the night
'line up and piss here', helps keep floors clean!
I had my slack picture set to him for like a year until someone thought that was actually me
how much do clothes cost in the matrix?
There's another good quote from that movie but I think the mods here would disapprove
watch?v=mmPYHT2cbRE
Bonus points if you can vary the intensity in real time to help you aim for the centre?
I was thinking make the whole bowl slowly get brighter like you've got iridescent pee that's building up in the bowl
That also works
It would be eaiser to do that with a kinect mounted over the toilet lol
Bad business model. If you can walk straight and get there, bad bartender.
What? The rgb toilet bowl with built-in audio surveillance isn't going to sell?
Might work if it made a phone call or two.
This is why phones need aux jacks, a public bluetooth toilet would take too long to pair to.
Now you're onto something. Perhaps like chat roulette, randomly connects you to another person who's also using the toilet.
Hangs up automatically when you flush
Have a camera aiming up at the person's face, project the face of the person they're connected to into the water in the bowl
Welp need a different sensor for waterless stuff. Lol
You trying to pull a Wyze here?
Heh, maybe you need to spray a fine mist into the toilet then you could make their image 3D by projecting it into the mist
We could sell the face photos to the police for tracking too
the police gets alerted automatically if too much alcohol is being detected and you arrived by car
Must have a solution for folks addicted to bushes like @forest edge as well.
Non starter
comes with 1CCF/mo of flushage, additional blocks are $10/block
wiithout subscription it will play ads at full volume
Maybe my proven sitting or standing sensor will be helpful here.
The same exact ads that are played on gas stations
i cant believe americans are getting served ads at the gas station
They all have a button on them to mute them at least
And I've seen a non-zero number of them smashed
Yea, there's nothing else worthwhile on those screens
Well, sometimes they'll show weather forecasts instead
I don't mind that
we tend to not have displays on them at all
Yea, the entire thing seems wasteful
just the usual volume and price meters
They should do chat roulette on the gas station pump screens
Pumping your gas, it connects you with some random person somewhere on earth also pumping gas
i dont think thats the usual content of that site
pumping something
didnt they even shut it down
omegle shut down
Omegle was a dumb site
Not that Chat Roulette isn't equally dumb
I just think the idea of screens/cameras around that connect you to random people doing the same thing as you is funny
there should be an linkedin version of that
where it connects random teams meetings together
Isn't that called Wyze?
i dont think they sell the new business opportunities™️ of tomorrow™️
@forest edge finishing up some Dungeness crab shebang style and was thinking of you. 😆
#!/bin/crab
that looks like a vegan crab
Brussels crab
is that one of those 10k ovens? lol
added the Stargate animations to Alexa. 😁
It's a shame that you have to have Amazon Prime to get the Stargate to work
it's one thing to be able to dial the DHD, and another to get the splashy bits to activate
BMBB Alexa is still best Alexa: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aW5TvT1mo9k
Amazon now sales an Alexa compatible Billy Bass!: https://amzn.to/2Du0Ij1
Video of the inside: https://youtu.be/PMuuaAlk1hs?t=51s
Updated with a python script to detect the audio output stream and trigger mouth movement. Albert Armea showed me his script and his blog post about a AlexaPi Christmas Tree he made.

speaking of which I have seen some pretty creative diy methods to try and simulate that effect. most are complete crap but people do try lol
I'm imagining curtains and some sort of pneumatic cannon
I think it at least needed a projection screen behind it rather than fancy drapes 🙂
the stargate by itself is still pretty neat. don't think i would ever put one in my home but just to show it off is neat. https://youtu.be/NaNYQcxR4TE?si=9zVctEYM2usG_DIv
Here is where we are of the new SG1 - Milky Way gate ! https://youtu.be/iKagU7PD2ME
Official contact : sg11emg@gmail.com
After 10 years of work, we are really close to the end of this project. Here is the SGA version which has been displayed for this event only on the 9th and 10th of May 2019. We're really proud of this work ! The London team ...
It had a distinct my spouse let me move all the furniture out the room and erect this monstrosity, but that's as far as they'd go vibe
follow up to the one i posted above, i just couldn't justify the space and it would take up. i wouldn't mind the hours put into it but the space over time.. https://youtu.be/8niRFF-aKAM?si=gdwLvO2jGW9cN0no
I have moved the gate to the back patio and got the dhd online. 😁 plus finished 2 of the current animations.
This might be contentious, but I was not at all a fan of the SGA Stargate. It's too... electronic, or somehing.
Both the SG1 and the SGU ones with their physical movement I like, but the just lighting version seems wrong somehow.
none of them really came close to the original but they had do something to keep it fresh
So what's your preferred method to grill crabs?
with some type of heat source
enjoy your constipation from eating too much crab
What's that?
you probably counter balance it with that other crap that induces diarrhea lol
Frigate audio detection is next level.
i briefly looked at that. no idea how you even set that up
was thinking of maybe doing that one of of my mothers back patio cameras but not for dog barks
Easy setup. Going to test on smoke alarms soon.
Add to configuration and good to go.
I know the guy who bought the iris from the earth gate at auction
Said it cost him a few thousand dollars
was it made of foam?
I wouldn't be terribly surprised if these fan-built models are better than the on-screen ones 🙂
Not sure, I never saw it in person.
I knew him online in an IRC channel I was active in for like 15 years. We watched through most of Stargate in there.
anyone know of a good rotary dial product (with or without a screen) like an M5stack Dial?
yeah same thing, a bit too expensive and I am not really into the hue eco system, more or a raw ESPHome DIY sort of guy 😉
What the hell are bag people
They clearly must be put into the microwave
Its just #zigbee-archived
Whew. Close one 🟨🟩⬛⬛⬛ ⬛⬛⬛⬛⬛ ⬛⬛⬛⬛⬛ ⬛🟩🟩🟩🟩 ⬛🟩🟩🟩🟩 🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩
Quordle is where it's at
Put your skills to the test and solve thirty-two Wordles at once! You have 37 guesses to solve all 32 words. A new Duotrigordle available each day to solve.
I hate word games because I’m a terrible speller, guessing words from letter clues is like…. uhhhh… yeah…. lol
Paying attention to individual letters feels like trying to work with bitwise operators lol
I'm thinking ultrasonic mist screen and a projector?
Sometimes when you have a great idea for a Halloween decoration the only thing to do is to make it yourself. That's what Jonathan Lenhardt of San Antonio, Texas, has been up to – for more than a couple of years. But when you're looking to re-imagine the fog machine so that it better displays digital decorations and other special effects, there'...
You could probably do something fancy with the laminar flow that's trapping the fog in a sheet to create the whirlpool effect
use mustard gas and invite the neighbors to take a trip to another world
Aren't all axolotls basically in permanent juvenile gene expression and never metamorphize into an adult normally?
I've heard of breeders stressing them out bad enough to force it
that thing is straight out of Pokemon
or some b-grade animatronic TV show from Nickelodeon from the 80s
I can also imagine that that's the video just before it eats your face off
they all look like someone drew a face on a thumb with a sharpie
Buy em fast, they go quick
inject with iodine will cause them to grow up i think
I'm pretty sure it drastically shortens their lifespan too
A healthy aquarium is very much not a kid activity lol
ha
My dog is a weirdo, she likes to use hard surfaces as a pillow
Looks like it swallowed Christmas lights
A Shiba RGB-Inu
Actually I'm going to be building a smart ultrasonic outdoor horn with frigate bark detection to make the neighbor's chihuahua shut the eff up
One of my colleagues has his cats in HA. They've got bluetooth trackers on their collars, so he can follow them around the house.
Or even my own dogs if they go on a bork frenzy lol
"Does your dog bite?" - "No, he swallows in one piece."
Lol my son built a computer with rgb everything, and then realized he can’t sleep with it on in the room
He’s like my next build will be blacked out
Or unplugging the RGB header, if used
Not very practical
This kid got ram with RGB in it lol, I'm sure there is some software setting to shut it off.... maybe
He just shuts the computer down at night lol
I wouldn't place a bet with cheap RGB components
heh, nice. My power estimate from my vue was $333.51, my actual bill was $329.34
it's all just basic ws2812 stuff with PC's. I have my fans controlled by ESP home with the standard header
Without rgb I would be nothing
Looks great to display some ledfx ocean bass
It's a crab thing 😆
this must be something i am too poor to know
That seems like a lot of power.
i spend the day looking into government programs to put 5" of foam on my roof and solar panels.
Yup, and now I can track the huge chunk of it that's not my usage and charge the responsible parties accordingly.
Yea, I lease two rooms out
And one of them has a bunch of fishtanks in an enclosed but uninsulated part of the house that rely on resistive heat
eep
And refuses to listen to me when I ask for things like insulation wrapped around the tanks and covers for the tops
So instead I'm going to charge him for all the usage on that circuit
are you allowed?
I'm renting them out to friends I've lived with for about 6 years now, once I got hard numbers that showed how much he was costing just himself he agreed to pay it.
anyhow. how is the vue system. thats one of the ones i was looking at cause it was somewhat cheap.
azhh ok
The thing that I didn't get was the complete refusal to install insulation on the tanks, I already had bubblewrap foam insulation on hand I offered to just give him
but then you cant see the fishies?
I was suggesting wrap the sides and bottoms not visible
why not insulate the room. line it with some foam
It's a really janky outdoor area I'd rather just tear down and return to outdoors myself
Some previous homeowner ran joists literally between my house and the next door house and put a corrugated plastic roof on it
ha
Yea, and I won't let him bring the fishtanks inside because at the last place we rented together he didn't take care of things like drying the floor off after he dumped 60 gallons of water, I had to find out by stepping on it then put fans on it myself.
if i do the foam encasing and a heat pump and the small solar kit, the power company should end up paying me. and the loan is about $120 a month for 10 years interest free. win win win.
I wish I could have got a rebate for my heat pump
But, no, I had to have it professionally installed for the rebate
right now my average electric bill is about $130us
cause i got a hole in the roof and resistive heat
ha
My share of the power bill once the fishtanks were removed is $73
ah yeah. no rebate on the pump here unless its pro. but then its still 15k vs 3
not worth it to me on a little house
holy crap haha
fancy fish
yea, that's why I was getting pissed at him about the usage
I was paying like $60/mo for those tanks out of my own pocket
my neighbour has the same house as me but with good insulation and their bill is more like 70usd a month
the foam will be a big step even above their house. so im hoping it cuts is way way down
I paid about $3200 for my unit. I got a fourth minisplit head for $1000 but never actually installed it since it wasn't actually going to increase the capacity of my existing system at all. I'm probably going to get another heat pump to power that one instead of hooking it to my existing system, I just need the outdoor unit and found some for about $500.
solar panals will generate 8000-10000kwh a year (so they claim)
I am paying a fortune in leccy here, but thats just the rates being high unfortunately
mine will be 24k btu ducted. 2200cdn, plus some tools, pump, , vacuum, and then making dusting
My rate is about $0.13usd/kwh
its 8 cents cdn off peak here
Lol, you're going to piss a lot of people off saying that's expensive.
Some of the people on here have power rates closer to like $0.30-$0.50/kwh
yeah im teasing. our electricity price is "fake". set by the gov
the rest is in taxes on the rich
my friend in denmark has power up to 1 euro /kwh
51.810 pence per kWh for my first 2 units, then 28.77p per kWh for each unit after that.
Basically 65 cents US for first 2 then 36 cents after that
My current system is a 36k btu system I've got three 12k heads on. I can hook another head to it but all it'd get me is more flexibility from room to room. I have another 18k head just sitting here so I was probably going to get another 18k compressor.
thats why canada can be a bit slow adopting renewabile stuff. cause the big waterfall makes nice cheap power.
i want to try ducting for a more even distribution
Ouch, I pay at most 13 cents a kWh
part of the problem in UK is that the price for electricity is paid assuming it was generated purely from gas, even if it wasnt
I have a ducted furnace and can turn on just the blower fan in it for airflow
If its a damn windy day and those turbines are spinning good and energy is dirt cheap? Doesnt matter, I still pay as if the provider was using gas
Terrible
if its windy here all the turbines are shut down
My house used to have ducted A/C too but it had all leaked out before I bought the house and it was going to be stupidly expensive to replace that system
wind is hard to harness here, cause its either not enough to be useful, or gusting 130kph and breaking everything.
I have recently halved my gas bill for heating though
we have tried some pilot projects
UK has a fair bit of reliable wind
and quite regularly in the off peak hours has issues with there being more wind generation than grid load
Which you'd think would be ideal for giving me cheap leccy during those hours, but of course not -.-
we have a 2mw turbine in a park downtown. i think at the time it was the largest in north america. they ran it for maybe 20 years as a trial.
1mwh average for that turbine.
hm
Personally I like the ability to control rooms individually. I generally set my gas furnace to like 19C and use the heat pumps to heat individual rooms past that, while other people keep their rooms cool.
Unfortunately adding to my woes, I have a rooftop facing the wrong direction for solar, and am in a rental anyway
cant really have a personal turbine i dont think here. cheap (ish) solar will be more useful to me.
doh. one side of my roof is southeast, so it should be good
And here, the efficiency diff between heat pumps and gas boiler+radiators as we use here, kinda equals out on cost to run
So fitting a heat pump, not ever going to have a return on investment
gas. thats so 80s
When the market price is effed heat pumps don’t always work out
mains gas is much much cheaper per unit than electricity is
to a ratio that roughly equals the efficiency gain of the heatpump
heatpump roi here is 4 years maybe. for one of the cheaper diy models
the 2 basically cancel out to "yeah you pay the same either way"
and thats completely excluding the costs of installing one
At least you get aircon with a heat pump
see its gone the opposite here. gas gdoubled in price and electricity is more or less fixed
most here are air to water
running the radiators on them
so no, dont get AC on them
Eww lol
Easier retrofit in a home already using a boiler
and if you have a hot water tank (common here, though I dont have one), then they can also provide your hot water
meh
Give me central forced air before a radiator please lol
In my lifetime, I havent been in a single domestic setting with forced air
we just do not do that here
It’s pretty much bog standard here
not even in scottland where its colder/
No, even many nordic countries use radiators
force air is the norm here.
Plus isn't it more efficient than radiant heat?
big furnace with 500,000btu.
nope
both pretty much same
yeah. provided you arent losing heat they are the same
With forced air you get to keep heating the same air warmer and warmer
but this is it, this is all that warms my study
force air in theory will be more uniform
with radiator you keep warming the same air warmer and warmer
no ventilation though
I'd argue the same reason a convection oven is better than a radiant one...
Except these things are mostly convective 😛
i have resistive heaters for the moment. til i get the new system
Yea, on the most optimal day my heat pump is on par with my furnace in price. The rest of the time it's just convenient zoned heating, or my A/C in the summer. If I didn't DIY the install it would have been unrealistic.
my house originally had a wood stove in the middle.
they raise an updraft through their central core
And essentially cycle the air through the room slowly
then in the 60s they installed baseboard radiators and a boiler. horrible.
baseboard radiators are pretty shitty
very shitty
Had those at my first apartment after I moved out of my parents house, they were terrible.
these more modern ones though, work pretty well
yeah its common in some older appartments here
This one is a dual core, you can get triple core units these days too
you can also just run pex in the floor.
That apartment had electric as a flat fee so I just ran space heaters everywhere
the only issue they have with heat pumps is that heat pumps tend to have a lower working temperature for the fluid
nice warm floor
but in all cases, use way more power than a heat pump
unless the boiler is a heat pump of course
we dont really have those here
And so a radiator thats area was sized up based on 80c fluid, but running on 60c fluid, becomes inadequate
Around here I use my furnace as much to filter the air when there are forest fires in the summer
Can't always open a window to cool down either
That said many newer heat pumps are now able to run the system at 80c
Heatpump water heaters never made a ton of sense to me. They don't really get your water super hot and they dump cold air out you need to deal with.
THeyre splits
floor heating is only 25c
Yeah and thats popular in new builds
So you're running a line to deal with taking the cold outside then
there are both
ive seen the ones you are talking about
real stupid
ha
Pretty much, the systems we run have the hot side indoors replacing where the boiler went, and the cold side outdoors
Yea, the one I saw in person dumped into the room
Was basically a window A/C slapped on a water tank
I have seen the free standing hot water cylinders with heat pumps, but thats not what we use here
the main issue with electric heat is capacity. like an instant water heater needs 120amps. thats not easy to do. gas flow is (virtulally) unlimited in comparison. so 200k+ btu is easy
Hence why we dont have the instant water heater
Hot side of the heat pumps we use here can heat a water tank
our water is too cold here for one
You can get a normal tank electric heater that only draws like 2kw
yeah my old boiler had an indirect water tank
that was gas though
fancy new german kit they put in the house before i bought it... and then i ripped it out and sold it for $2500 haha
thats was 96k btu. (26kw?) nice and adequate, but not when gas prices skyrocket
i've got an ESPHome setup now running per room thermostats with my radiators though
discovered the valve heads for underfloor heating manifolds fit british radiators
so you can see it bottom left here
oh so each rad can be a zone?
yup
my system had a tyco controller with 4 pump controllers. then grunfos pumps
the sonoff r2 down there is reflashed with esphome, provides a thermostat entity to home assistant and a single binary sensor, and imports temperature from the zigbee room temp sensor I have in here already
self manages its relay output, the binary sensor simply indicates in HA whether the radiator is on
i want to hack my electric fireplace to respond to the thermostat.
then a Shelly 1 also reflashed on the boiler monitors all the binary sensors for each controller I have setup and enables the boiler accordingly
the only room that is any different is the lounge, it doesnt have a valve interface on it
Manual taps on it still, refitting it with a valve is on the todo list
its still got an esp32 presenting a thermostat card and managing a heat demand for that room though
I have a natural gas fireplace I looked into putting an electric controller on, ended up deciding I didn't want HA to be able to start a literal fire.
ha
eyah
in this case all it really is is a blower heater with 2 750w elements. (and some lights)
yeah I have an electric heater I refitted with zigbee at one point
it is just for backup if the heat pump fails at -30c
yup, mines on a home assistant generic thermostat and set for a much lower temp than the radiator in that zone is
and is basically only there if the gas packs up somehow
my condo heat pump failed only once in the heat, never in cold (before dying after 16 years)
i have no idea what the power use was though, i didnt pay for power.
small home, 3 breakers only
been pretty easy to throw a shelly 3EM at that problem now
its not been active for long, and turns out I dont use my oven much
ha
i use my oven and cook top at minimum probably 1kwh a day.
90% of my power is heat though. in the months i dont need heat or ac, i use like 6 or 8 kwh a day total
so when i get solar, i will be earning up to maybe 40kwh a day back
which will then offset winter when the solar doesnt do much
That would be the automation of the year
boiler has only been on for a grand total of 30 minutes today
electric front, used 3.64 units
i use up to 100kwh a day for heat. although its not very cold today
and I have checked, the metering on the shelly and on my energy provider at the end of a 5kWh consumed day were within 2 or 3Wh of each other
nice
I was previously thinking about doing the old monitor the LED on the meter trick
But where's the fun in that
I only had three breakers and the Shelly went on sale on black Friday
vs sept
yes
but also, its really cold and i have giant holes
in the ceiling letting air out
I was basically running pure resistive heat for 2 weeks over winter when one of my radiators sprung a leak and drained the system for me
But I was just isolating self to 2 rooms
im right in the efficiency zone for the heat pump for the last month. my bill would be 40-50% of what it is this month. (save $150)
but in comparison. if i foam the roof, the bill will probably be 15% of that it is this month
soo, foam first. heat pump later
Yeah, good insulation goes a darn long way
and air sealing
ha
I couldnt complain, she was a good hot water bottle
But it is just me in this house so it was pretty viable to keep something set up and the weather wasn't too harsh either
I put a 5000w heater in my garage to keep my garage above freezing, I got a large one to handle that if the garage door is left open. It can keep the room at 24C on the coldest days if the door is closed, though. That's really damn expensive, lol.
Like 70kwh that one day to the heater
ha
yeah i have a 5kw heater when i bought the house and it had a hole in the floor and my power bill was $521
My garage is almost fully insulated, there's about a 6' section of wall that's not. I put insulation on the door too
But the concrete slab at the bottom isn't and that never heats up
ah nice
I considered dense foam with plywood on it to insulate the floor in the garage
I might still do that eventually
dense foam->plywood->vinyl fake wood flooring
i did 1/2" foam, 1/4" ply, then kitchen tile.
Any garage I get will probably remain a concrete slab
it did help
Wanna work on cars and bikes and such in one
If I did that and insulated that last wall my garage would basically be a habitable room
its put a wood floor in my garage
Would need to replace some drywall and paint
And eh, it'd have to be hardy enough to take a car being jacked up on it
Without me going oh no I scratched the floor
2x6 nail laminated timber cross ways. cheaper and nicer than a slab
Speaking of, I still need to try and make a new tool to adjust my coilovers
Theyre pretty seized, and just as it felt like it was gonna start moving, the spanner that came with them bent
use a wrench instead
spanners are not a real thing. they are called wrenches.
i have lots of the toothed wrenches cause they are used for CNC tooling
I'll call you a spanner if you keep disrespecting my language like that 😛
In British English it's a spanner
"language". cute that you think its a language
Unless it's a pipe wrench in which case it's a wrench
everything is a wrench here. not sure why.
unless its pins. then thats a spanner
But yeah this is basically what I have to interface with
just cnc a spanner from 4140 prehard
well, see thats your first problem
I also don't have the space and tooling to remove the shock from the car either really
So pretty limited to what I can do on an axle stand at the moment
One of the guys I lease a room to just got a small CNC, I need to figure out how to use it
Closest I've done to CNC was strapping a dremel to a 3d printer gantry
haha
It's like half a wrench
the ones i have for cnc tooling are forged. might not be big enough though
Not sure exactly what they're made of, but it's not hardened for sure
it's like 2' x 3' I think
So not the smallest
Though that design if it was too hard would probably damage the lock ring
I want to see if I can get the precision on that CNC to mill out traces on pcbs
I would so love to be able to DIY PCBs at home
mine can do that easy. but ive never tried
You ever get anywhere with the electronic shifter
I had it working on the ender 3 kinda, but it was too wobbly to get the pitch I needed for some of the qfps I was trying to work with
I did make a test board using a through hole atmel that worked though
ORANGE!!!!!!!!!
This video shows the machining of some padauk artisan cherry mx compatible keycaps. After machining they get a delrin (POM) stem bonded in.
We Have put a few of these in our etsy shop to buy here: https://everythingbutpizza.etsy.com/ca/listing/1620697500/lsor-cnc-machined-exotic-wood-keycaps
Buying out merch lets us keep making...
That reminds me, I wanted to try printing keycaps
I have a shit ton of gatreon switches and esp32s, I want to put them in boxes around to control lights
fun
I already made one I mounted under my desk but I didn't have any proper keycaps for the functions the buttons do so it's just kind of a random collection of keycaps
I was thinking either polycarbonate or PETG keycaps at 100% density
the upper works. the stem wont work well if you print it
(ive tried... a lot)
ha
Still need to fix my printer
ill bet yoy a cat keycap you cant
😛
Also would be nice if I had the space to learn to woodwork and such ya know
the issues its both strength and tolerance.
so even if pc wont break, it wont fit clean
But oh well. Even bike maintenance is an outside or middle of the lounge job
My printer does pretty damn well on tolerance
you need an interference fit +- 0.01mm.
and even if you hit it, the cross will stretch out when you install it and over a short time come loose
anyhow. not stopping you from trying. just warning you it wont work too well
SLS nylon. these dont grip or stay on at all. I did stainless printed stems too. they dont have any give at all so they dont work either.
so i wounded up cncing them from delrin
downside, time which = money. $3 a stem. ah
Hmm, if I won I get a keycap, if you won I can't make you a keycap.
hehe. oh you should try it if you want.
https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1277297/files I was going to give this one a try
Will be done in like 25 minutes
I'm trying PETG as a support interface for PC, never tried that before so that might not work
oh. i guess i should wanr you every keycap file out there is wrong by a looong way. (profile, size, shape, offset)
lol, fair
but it should still function
Worst case I'll glue the keycaps on, I have hundreds of switches in boxes.
my cherry file
glue wont stick to the stem. that might be good, it will make it snug but not completely permanent
I'd probably find a glue that stuck
These are optimally going to be mounted elbow height on walls
most keycap crosses are pom (maybe not all). i had to buy special solvent primers and gluye from 3m to make it stick hehe.
but it should stick "enough"
to make the cap stay on nice
ha
ive really begun to hate spray foam. it seems like a great idea until you need to remove it
same with PL glue
When I ran my minisplits I had to cut 4" holes in the wall and walled them off with nylon tubes, I filled the nylon tubes with sprayfoam after everything was installed.
thats not a bad use
rats looove to dig sprayfoam i found. so i hope you put a little mesh of somekind in there
ah cool
Though I think one is cracked now
mmm, i want chicken and bacon bucatini alfredo
waiter!
oh, crap, im the waiter.. and the cook
Huh, my printer takes a while to preheat to PC temps
Never really paid attention to it before
Mine just hit temp
i dont do pc, but i do nylon at 100c
256x256
Yea, I'm doing PC at 100
Well, 100 bed temp
The chamber isn't heated on my printer
260 nozzle?
I'm just doing the default settings for it
mine dont go that high hah
Mine goes to 300C
And some people have done stupid stuff like separate the thermistor from the hotend to get them to go hotter
One guy got PEEK from a Bambu but definitely voided his warranty in the process
here we just insert rat poison into the spray foam, beats a mesh cuz they eat thru that too
My dog learned she can open the sliding glass door when it's not locked and we ended up with a couple mice a couple weeks ago
I think I got them all though
I wouldn't mind her opening the door if she'd just close it when she's done but she never does
I wonder if I could actually train her for that
pretty sure thats illegal here.
rat poison?
Can't leave poison outside here
using a poison outdoors
Too many peoples dogs were getting sick
how is it outside if it's stuck into foam
I'm talking about in the hole you're foaming
well, i dont live in the wild west :p
neither do I
if theres any risk a squirrel or bird or some other animal can eat it is not allowed
we don't have squirrels, and "other animals"
you sure you don't live in the wild west ? 😛
for rats you put the poison in a little plastic house outside
haha
at least that's what we do here
Living somewhere that doesn't have any animals except rats sounds kinda sucky
indeed
well there's iguanas
ha
and hundreds of types of birds
iguanas in new jersey?
but sadly no land mammals except one very endangered species
rats?
I don't live in new jersey
you're poisioning endangered rats?
actually that's not strictly true, we have racoons but they aren't native
no, but it is a rodent called the Hutia
it's like a smaller capybara
most our animal population is marine
as is most of the country 😄
looks like a\ beaver
so we have manatee, whales, dolphins and countless fish
and fish posters?
no, I have cats... I haven't seen a rat in years... alive at least
I have dogs and they'd play with the rats if they could
Probably lead them to their food bowl and watch as they ate
I'm allergic to cats
im alergic to dog owners
I did have a dog till late last year when my 15 year old pretty girl died
the cats loved her and she loved them
I'd go outside and she'd be sleeping with 4+ cats curled around her
are you sure it wasnt an iguana?
petg as support for pc did not work
stuck together quite well
Good to know I can do PC/PETG prints though
My slicer scoffed at using pla and pc in a print
Said the temp difference between them was too great
I just found a different model I won't need supports for
Inserted and removed it around 20 times now, still fits great.
hmmmm
nice
need to add stairs to my house. i like to start with the most crazy expensive design i can think of, then work my way down to whatever i can get at home depot 😛
So..ladder made out of 2x4s
those stairs are made of 2x4s actually. floors as well. laminated.
but the glass... nope. not gonna pay for that
haha
You know what else really helps on staircases? Handrails
Stayed in an airbnb place a couple of weeks ago, felt like I was about to die every time I had to descend the stairs because there was nothing to hold onto
ha. handrail will be on the other side. i havent drawn that wall in yet
so this glass is $2000 cdn roughly. thats not as bad as i expected.
Make sure it's not just ice
its made form gummie bears
the color led is pretty slick https://youtu.be/Jb2afzA9OE8?si=fKMSbZPHe-VZUDBo
Introducing the new White Series from Inovelli. Finally, a Thread and Matter switch that works with Apple Home, Google Home, Amazon Echo, SmartThings (V3 & Station), Hubitat (C8), and Home Assistant.
If they do one in the UK/EU format I'd be interested tbh
Doesn't look like they do. Shame
Going to try a keycap with black PETG top, clear PETG sides, and 'clear black' PC for the stem.
Not sure, this is the first print I've intentionally tried to fuse them
I tried PETG as support material earlier and it stuck to the PC pretty well
If this actually works and looks good I'll probably get a clear PC and a solid black PC and use just PC
👀
I might try just PETG too but I think PC is going to hold shape better for the stem
I think the normal ones are just abs
abs can be tricky to print to dimensional accuracy
Likes to warp and shrink as it prints
I've never been satisfied with ABS, personally.
Oh interesting. So inovelli could eventually do EU versions of their switches. I'll keep tabs
Smart switch companies still do not get it sadly
We don't need the most cursed looking assembly, just give us a proper insert and a bunch of default switch faces
I have a ZigBee 2 gang unit that is aesthetically pleasing enough
But it's build quality isn't the greatest
And it isn't the most functional
They've shown some renders for a European model, just proof of concept, and they look fine. But honestly I like their US ones, just resize it to fit an EU box, done
But a smart switch I can just stick in the wall and either use it with it switching the load with traditional bulbs or decouple it entirely. Thats interesting.
Seems to have, yea.
I did the first at .08mm layer height, this one was at .2mm layer height. The .08mm one fit a lot better.
Also I think I lost detail in the icon at .2mm
Also petg was warm to the point of being soft all the way through at pc bed temps
Neat
Are you using a rough build surface?
Or is that just how the black material ends up
what it looks like after you sand 3d printed stuff.
Why would you sand it unless you were to apply paint
prints are in layers.. if you wanted a smoother surface you have to sand it. i'm sure he's going to do something else rather than just leave it like that
Probably
if you look at the second picture it shows the underside what the top side looked like originally after print
the grainy parts are likely from the build surface
Given the bottom looks to be standard cherry keyboard keycaps, probably wants to add a layer for a key or something

There's a bold real estate experiment underway in Tempe, Arizona. Culdesac is the nation's first rental community designed and built specifically for car-free living. Residents say it has helped them get to know their neighbors better. But the real test will be when temperatures climb this summer. CNBC Senior Real Estate Correspondent Diana Olic...
looks great, we have that here too
Love it. it's great when you work from home, and for some reason a likeminded community gets people to talk more to each other 😮
it will take a few generations for american car brain to adjust
Lol they named it culdesac
more inclined it will only take one generation before they realize it was a shit idea lol
Just stay in Texas
@tidal bronze you hear that?
It'll depend on whether the supporting businesses survive
Imagine having a car be most of your personal identity
City centers in Europe are all like this
He watches “mah Fox News” and they tell him it’s bad
what? i have only seen one thing in europe where there were no normal cars but some electric thing was used in their place
Not really.
City centers have a lot of outside traffic to support their stores
And generally have access to transportation in a preferred way by being the center of the star layout
you imagine having to dolly for several hundreds of feet every big item you own or going to buy
even tv's with how light they are come in boxes so big a single person can't just carry it lol
Speak for yourself tiny
uh huh
Large cities have large-ish pedestrian areas.
But their composition is entirely different.
While they have residential, they also have a shop landscape and general pull on customers outside the community.
IMO this will either become a rich people play project or fail because it cannot exist in an otherwise vacuum
it will fail i have no doubts there
the new fad here over the past 10 years have been apartments on top of business like grocery stores, banks etc but not restricted in a cluster next to a busy(ish) road
those seem to have held on somewhat but I have heard those buisnesses don't make nearly as much as their stand alone counterparts
What's Fox News?
Entertainment for smoothbrains
whats a smoothbrain
based on the stuff you say here, people like you lol
that dosen't really explain it
quad your smoothbrain apparently lol
I haven't watched news in ages 😆
Where will you get your manufactured outrage???
explains why I never heard of that before
Lol. Last time I guess it was 2015
dont understand what you mean?
All infrastructure (and this includes walkable shopping) in this blob is essentially only accessible to the inhabitants
While for most city centers, they are propped up by walk through traffic.
I.e. the only money in that needs to provide all amortized cost is salaries or wealth of 200 units.
not sure what kind of shops they will build, but the same principles apply as with city centres. People love shopping in pedestrian friendly areas. You can park on the outside of the area and then walk into it
at least that's what I do here...
How will you buy new furniture and tvs on a weekly basis with such a communist setup lol
that's called a Mall 😂
open air mall lol
usually buy those outside of the city😅
I was mostly sarcastic about the idea of planning your whole environment around something that happens quite infrequently
Well, they need shops for daily needs for the inhabitants
But those have 0 draw factor to first take motorized transport (public or private) then walk through some somewhat residential area, just to have less convenience in the end
Yeah they’re basically building an island experiment there
convenience compared to what?
Any large supermarket or something like a Mall
you know, the ways people currently shop
I thought everyone shopped online now lol
How is that more convenient than going to a residential walkable area?
That as well
By having infrastructure geared for it
Have you never seen a supermarket?
A parking lot with provided carts is a lot less annoying to navigate than residential areas
And if you downscale to the point where carts aren't necessary, it starts being annoying to drive (or take a train) there.
I've been doing this all my life so it doesn't compute in my brain how this could be 'inconvenient' lol
because you've never used convenient infrastructure 😂
Walkable is nice, and I do most of my grocery shopping by foot since a decade or so
But when I take the car, I don't want to drive to the edge of some area and then start walking. That's big dumb
I usually try to go cartless when shopping, even at Costco, but it can get pretty awkward just carrying an armful of stuff to my car
sounds like a great way of keeping the additional snacks out
I think we have different perspectives on what convenience is lol
Costco cartless? How heartless?
So, Mall like areas^^
Not a residential area trying to make a point
I'm more of a targeted Costco shopper
I need some lessons. That's how I leave the house.
not sure but malls tend to be in residential areas around here
I enjoy the experience of ease of movement amongst the sea of landlocked carts
Hmm, gives me something to think about
Planning to go for some eggs and wine. Let's see how it all ends.
what an odd combination
I don't question the chef
Probably some weird French thing
Yep, with good wine.
As long as you don't dump Moscato instead of pinot grigio after too much wine
I was using a rough build plate
This is one I tried on my smooth but scratched up build plate
I did not find the Bambu smooth high temp plate to be very durable.
It's got an outline of every print I've ever done on it still on it
It also absorbs hand grease like no other and unless I use gloves to take my prints off I have to wash it with soap between every print
Id kinda wish they offer a glass plate
Yea, in general I prefer the textured PEI plate because it just sticks well and comes free well but a smooth glass plate would be nice to get smooth surfaces from
That's probably one of the features I enjoy the most about the ender I have
Stuff sticks to the glass and it won't damage anything at all
Go away
Fun, Discord just drops the reply if the message you're replying to is deleted before sending
PETG will chemically bond with the glass, btw.
I put tape down on my ender 3 when I printed PETG on it
So far I've had no issues printing petg either
Just have to let the bed cool down a bit to loose the print but that works for me
No idea why pla seems to be the wanted child when petg is nearly the same experience but the much better result
Personally I generally like the look of PLA better
PETG is shinier and imo tends to accentuate layer lines
That’s where fuzzy skin can be an awesome setting
I bought an 8k resin printer just for printing keycaps
You can’t see any of layer lines
Oh printing your own keycaps is an interesting idea that somehow never occured to me. Now I wish I had my old Logitech keyboard with those useless G keys that I could make something like this for
All we need is matte, glow and faded petg to fix this
You still would've been stuck with those shitty romer g switches, lol.
Well first is effectively the same as wet petg
This smooth keycap feels pretty good to type on.
I popped my 'e' off and put it there to try it out
I don't like the textured plate for keys though
lol the future https://youtu.be/ngb29-cV7hY?si=9503vRKMm7-Vx-A_
Reports reveal some General Mills products may contain dangerous plastics.
#news #consumer #food
yup sooner or later we will be back tracking because "newer" is not better
assuming newer generations don't pop out too dumb to act considering the current rate
Lol, the keycap popped off the bed about 20 layers in and the nozzle picked it up and dropped it down my printer's poop chute.
lookin good
Pretty sure intelligence has gone up steadily since we quit putting lead in everything. I'd hate to have had leaded gasoline vapors poisoning me and making me stupid.
Needs a brim I guess
unfortunately it's not and they done proved that
thats what television is for
That build plate just kinda sucks. It needs glue to be reliable but that ruins the surface finish.
Don't worry, we've just swapped TEL for microplastics 👍 Business as usual
we certianly live a little longer but we are not getting smarter
my house has lead pipes and asbestos siding. no ill effects to reporgefefhghngsdfjsr ... sorry, hand tremmor
It's lupus
its never lupus
Except that one episode it was
yeah but he was a magician, so noone cared
the city replaced all the elad pipes to the front lawn, but you cant get undere my house to replace the rest
if i do my reconstruction i will have access and they can replace the rest. they need to replace the meter anyway,. so may as well do it all at once
Pretty sure my inbound water line is PVC
all new lines to the meter are copper. after the meter inside the house i have all pex
is it? or is it just drawing in people that had no attention span to begin with
it's not just that. hell people are "learning" from youtube videos instead of actually picking up a book lol
become a lawyer in 10 mins
Well it certainly made it worse
One of my friends just recently had to replace most of his interior water pipes.
There was a plastic water pipe product sold here in NZ back in the 70-80s that has a habit of just randomly exploding.

eschewing youtube as a source of gaining an understanding of something is quite out of touch, lol.
Depends what you watch. I've learned a great deal on YouTube for my master degree
yeah. in the 70s we had real bad idea. aluminium wire, plastic everything - but not good plastic
I rest my case lol
Yeah, this was definitely one for that list. Early kind of plastic water pipe, what could possibly go wrong
youtube is an amazing resource for learning.
?
I'm lucky my house is from 1991, so has what was remarkably standard for that era; PEX cold + copper hot
For sure
I learned all about the development of blue LEDs last night
mine had copper everything, including the 3" drains
He's just trying to be a troll.
The Veritasium video? That was pretty cool
hehe
As always
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3qudfg5sIt0 I watched this video on blue LEDs yesterday, lol.
Although a gallium nitride based blue LED was demonstrated in the early 70's, The silicon carbide based blue LED was the first commercially available. This video takes a quick look at them.

Forgot the name
nile red?
styropyro? nilered? explosions and fire?
more different canadish
nilered is canadian I think
yeah from ottawa
The one that has a series about an old chemical recipe book
when it's something that has little chance of leading you to hurt yourself or others than it's ok. as long as you don't preach it as gospel just because someone on a video said so then nno harm or fowl
That was styropyro
but most the crap I've seen on youtube videos are at most partial truths
Ah yeah that one
Most crap I've seen from you is a partial truth.
well thats because you don't know any better
had to find good home automation channels, cause 90% of them are just shilling products
I never watched any videos on HA stuff
I don't bother because 98% of it is "look at this cool product that's only sold in North America"
also never try to look for video/cinema gear reviews. they thing a review is opening a box and calling their free sponsored gear amazing.
Yea, the only automation-related videos I've seen were 'Look at this product' or 'Look at this hyper-specific solution I found to my problem'
odd I always see neat stuff that isn't sold in the US
well thats a different issue
Mostly other channels I watch touching on automation for a bit
usually i know enough about what im doing to just want a very specific solution. like how x plugs into y.
youtube is not great for that
Yea, when I need to control some weird device I don't google how to automate it, I look at what communication methods the device accepts control over.
(for electronics)
for construction youtube is amazing though. "how to nail this type of connection" 39 videos pop up
"how to flash a window with 3m tape"
etc
surprisingly amazing
now see thats where the trouble starts
Not sure why you think it's any different than somebody going to the library and grabbing a random book 30 years ago and doing a DIY project.
It's not like all books are good either.
your inspector will kick you in the head if its wrong anyway
but the code book is often difficult to translate into visual understanding. watching soemone DO it can go a long way
There are a lot of crap books in engineering. Crap and expensive
Luckily there is libgen so i can preview it hehe
like my NLT flooring. "boards mst be sufficiently spiked" is what code says. that the f does that mean
its way different. YT video you are taking what is being talked about or shown as correct or acceptable. books and manuals are way diffrent because they are more regulated information
are there shit books? sure
watch a video.. oh, it means nails this spacing penetrating at least 3 boards
You're lying to yourself if you think books were ever a regulated source of information
Like, what? 🤣
all the books are online anwya
in the sense they are deemed acceptable methods by code enforces etc? yes they exsist lol
video are either a translation, or an accessory to the written material
what does that even mean
you can get continuing education videos online that are certified by regulating bodies
hell most shit that is "certified" comes via a manual or book
if you rely on just one source (even the code book which can have errors) you are an idiot anyway
so you are broading outside of YT?
I learned calculus by watching videos from professor Leonard. Highly recommend him
If you rely on just the code book you're a fool. Nobody ever became a master at anything by only picking up a code book.
are there instructional videos produced for learning? sure.. but lets be real those are not generally lost in the seas of youtube
i never understood calculus well in school. i learned it better over time with online resources and just needing it in practical applications
3blue1brown proved there is a market for in depth high quality educational videos
this one of those youngins know more than elder comments? lol
The accreditation programs have to be done outside of YT to get professional credit for the videos for things like license renewals but they're still just youtube videos. That electrician channel I linked earlier has a program like that.
