gleaming crater
#

I've been to houston before and had to uber 5 minutes away to a restaurant because there was literally no walkable path out of my hotel

primal laurel
#

yeah I've seen the videos, just a different world

#

for me it would be unliveable but if you're used to relying on a car for everything you do for all your life...

gleaming crater
#

At least my town is rather walkable/bikeable

dire spear
#

walking is for the weak

#

oh, wait, no, got that backwards

iron granite
#

Weak the for is walking?

dire spear
#

my area is very bike friendly, and it makes some people angry. we added bike lanes to one street and people just park in them out of spite.

#

they are finally this year making barriers

ocean oar
#

Our city is busy fucking up the streets installing bike lanes (which I normally support), while we're in the middle of a crisis where 40% of our water supply is leaking

#

They really need to get their priorities in order, on that one. Do the bike lane if you have to dig up the road anyway, otherwise just fix the damn pipes

dire spear
#

O_o

#

you are surrounde by water. why does it matter if its leaking/

#

😛

gleaming crater
dire spear
#

ha

gleaming crater
#

I live on a street that got closed to thru traffic as part of the walkable city inititive

#

So they put these big temporary signs at the ends of the road saying as much

#

A couple people on this block apparently declared war on them and kept destroying or defacing the signs

#

Like allI can imagine is their tiny t-rex arms struggling to steer their oversized pickup around the barrier and getting mad every time

#

I don't see how having a quiet, residential neighborhood with very little thru traffic isn't a benefit to my property values

sudden forge
#

The weather isn't very bike friendly round here at the moment

#

Part of my commute home

#

Had to detour another route

#

Was clear on Saturday, just mucky. Back in Jan though, bring your swimsuit

gleaming crater
#

Around here we'd build foot bridges over that

#

But that maybe looks less regular

sudden forge
#

More of the area I commute through

#

This is the 3rd flood of 2024

sudden forge
#

Only got little 20" wheels on my bike

gleaming crater
#

I still want to buy an electric, my town is all hills

sudden forge
#

I built an electric

gleaming crater
#

But I'm so tall it's gotta be entirely custom build

#

Nobody makes a bike for me except maybe the danes lol

sudden forge
#

Mine isn't anything fancy

#

Just took an existing bike I had and slapped a motor on it

#

But I don't tend to get much use out of it, my area is pretty flat and it didn't take too much to build the stamina to just ride around unassisted

gleaming crater
#

My current bike doesn't have disc brakes and that's basically unworkable with the hills around me and an electirc

sudden forge
#

Eh, you'd be surprised what little difference the brakes make on an electric, and depending on the exact setup you go for, regen braking can be possible

gleaming crater
#

I live on a gigantic hill lol

#

Basically this whole town is hills tho

sudden forge
#

Riding style factors in heavily. If you're building a higher power ebike to fly around at 30mph all the time, brakes are then gonna be a big factor

#

But if it's just a motor to assist you a bit at speeds a cyclist can naturally achieve, it's surprising how little brake you need

#

Good set of pads on V's can be fine

gleaming crater
#

I've had every cyclist in seattle tell me you can't ride around here without disc brakes on an electric

sudden forge
#

Hills bigger problem than the motor

ocean oar
#

Our city is basically 100% hills.
My partner rides one of these https://www.niu.com/en/n-series/ which seems to cope pretty well with it.
Actually costs less than a lot of e-bikes, but has the same "light" licensing/registration requirements as a 50cc petrol scooter.

NIU delivers the best electric vehicle in the two-wheel class powered by a Bosch Electric Motor and Panasonic Lithium Battery.

#

Sometimes I can't figure out what the companies that make bikes are smoking when it comes to those pricetags

sudden forge
gleaming crater
#

Trying to stop a heavy bike (and a heavy me) on a steep grade with rubber eraser rim brakes doesn't sound fun

#

I'm 2m tall lol

sudden forge
#

But the motor and battery? My motor and it's gearbox is 3.6Kg, technically adds less weight to the bike than that as that's 3.6kg counting it's chain ring and the bike would have had a chain ring regardless

#

I weighed the battery on its own
3.5Kg

#

So in total I've only put 7kg on the bike over its non electrified form

gleaming crater
#

What size motor tho

#

Everyone around here tends to go to the legal limit or over because of how steep the hillls are lol

sudden forge
#

It's a 500W motor, but the only difference between the 250, 500 and 750W models of that system is firmware and motor windings. They all weigh the same

#

Specifically there's a 36V and a 48V winding

gleaming crater
#

Interesting

sudden forge
#

And then theres 250 and 500W firmwares for the 36V, and 500 and 750W firmwares for the 48

#

They pretty much just software current limit the things

gleaming crater
#

yeah I hear people talking about firmware unlocks for bikes

sudden forge
#

You can push even higher wattages through it with custom firmwares but it can't cope thermally, even the unit I have gets a bit melty at 750W if pushed hard all day

#

Apparently a bbshd which is a fairly popular motor that'll do 750W all day (or higher) is about 5-6kg

#

Plus battery

#

But basically you're looking at adding 5-10kg to a bike unless you're going for bonkers setups

gleaming crater
#

A popular brand around here is rad bikes and they seem way overbuilt lol

sudden forge
#

So weight wise. Brakes aren't as big a deal as you'd think. What luggage you're carrying could sometimes hit that difference

#

And rim brakes on hills, okay they're on full carbon race frames and tightly controlled diets etc, but you seen the tour de France?

#

Those guys will go flying down the Alps putting their brakes through far more work than a Seattle commuter on rim brakes

gleaming crater
#

Those bikes aren't even in the same universe tho lol

sudden forge
#

Good pads and a little maintenance go a damn long way still

#

A lot of people when they think rim brakes are thinking oh no, plastic armed V brakes that are super bendy etc

#

But a lot can actually exceed the braking force of hydro disks

gleaming crater
#

It's not like comparing disc to drum brakes lol

sudden forge
#

I do love my hydraulic discs on my ebike, mostly because of the lowered maintenance, things need bleeding once and that's it

#

But the rim brakes on my other bikes haven't been a problem

#

<@&330946878646517761> dog vomit in aisle 4

gleaming crater
#

Lol thanks for cleaning up that eyesore

sudden forge
#

but honestly, been doing alright enough on improving my fitness anyway, that I am kinda just appreciating that thing as it is

#

Converting it to an ebike would make a bigger difference to its weight than most bikes, it just doesnt weigh anything in first place

#

Things all of 10.5kg

#

and fits in my car which my ebike doesnt very easily

Wait this happened again? I was just talking about this the other day with someone

static schooner
#

their RCA seemed weird:

The incident was caused by a third-party caching client library that was recently integrated into our system. This client library received unprecedented load conditions caused by devices coming back online all at once. As a result of increased demand, it mixed up device ID and user ID mapping and connected some data to incorrect accounts.

#

I guess it was some kind of race condition?

or hash collision?

dire spear
#

ooh, tenants?

that makes more sens

prisma briar

And one of them has a bunch of fishtanks in an enclosed but uninsulated part of the house that rely on resistive heat

dire spear

prisma briar

And refuses to listen to me when I ask for things like insulation wrapped around the tanks and covers for the tops

are you allowed?

prisma briar

I'm renting them out to friends I've lived with for about 6 years now, once I got hard numbers that showed how much he was costing just himself he agreed to pay it.

dire spear
#

anyhow. how is the vue system. thats one of the ones i was looking at cause it was somewhat cheap.

prisma briar
#

The thing that I didn't get was the complete refusal to install insulation on the tanks, I already had bubblewrap foam insulation on hand I offered to just give him

dire spear
#

but then you cant see the fishies?

prisma briar
#

I was suggesting wrap the sides and bottoms not visible

dire spear
#

why not insulate the room. line it with some foam

prisma briar
#

It's a really janky outdoor area I'd rather just tear down and return to outdoors myself

dire spear
#

ahhh

#

so yer wastig money heating the outside

prisma briar
#

Some previous homeowner ran joists literally between my house and the next door house and put a corrugated plastic roof on it

dire spear
#

ha

prisma briar
#

Yea, and I won't let him bring the fishtanks inside because at the last place we rented together he didn't take care of things like drying the floor off after he dumped 60 gallons of water, I had to find out by stepping on it then put fans on it myself.

dire spear
#

if i do the foam encasing and a heat pump and the small solar kit, the power company should end up paying me. and the loan is about $120 a month for 10 years interest free. win win win.

prisma briar
#

I wish I could have got a rebate for my heat pump

#

But, no, I had to have it professionally installed for the rebate

dire spear
#

right now my average electric bill is about $130us

#

cause i got a hole in the roof and resistive heat

#

ha

prisma briar
#

My share of the power bill once the fishtanks were removed is $73

dire spear
#

not worth it to me on a little house

dire spear
#

fancy fish

prisma briar
#

yea, that's why I was getting pissed at him about the usage

#

I was paying like $60/mo for those tanks out of my own pocket

dire spear
#

my neighbour has the same house as me but with good insulation and their bill is more like 70usd a month

#

the foam will be a big step even above their house. so im hoping it cuts is way way down

prisma briar
dire spear
#

solar panals will generate 8000-10000kwh a year (so they claim)

sudden forge
#

I am paying a fortune in leccy here, but thats just the rates being high unfortunately

dire spear
prisma briar
#

My rate is about $0.13usd/kwh

dire spear
#

crazy expensive

sudden forge
#

compared to UK

#

thats basically free

dire spear
#

its 8 cents cdn off peak here

prisma briar
#

Some of the people on here have power rates closer to like $0.30-$0.50/kwh

dire spear
#

yeah im teasing. our electricity price is "fake". set by the gov

#

the rest is in taxes on the rich

#

my friend in denmark has power up to 1 euro /kwh

sudden forge
#

51.810 pence per kWh for my first 2 units, then 28.77p per kWh for each unit after that.
Basically 65 cents US for first 2 then 36 cents after that

prisma briar
dire spear
#

thats why canada can be a bit slow adopting renewabile stuff. cause the big waterfall makes nice cheap power.

dire spear
gleaming crater
sudden forge
#

part of the problem in UK is that the price for electricity is paid assuming it was generated purely from gas, even if it wasnt

prisma briar
sudden forge
#

If its a damn windy day and those turbines are spinning good and energy is dirt cheap? Doesnt matter, I still pay as if the provider was using gas

gleaming crater
#

Terrible

dire spear
prisma briar
#

My house used to have ducted A/C too but it had all leaked out before I bought the house and it was going to be stupidly expensive to replace that system

dire spear
#

wind is hard to harness here, cause its either not enough to be useful, or gusting 130kph and breaking everything.

sudden forge
#

I have recently halved my gas bill for heating though

dire spear
#

we have tried some pilot projects

sudden forge
#

UK has a fair bit of reliable wind

#

and quite regularly in the off peak hours has issues with there being more wind generation than grid load

#

Which you'd think would be ideal for giving me cheap leccy during those hours, but of course not -.-

dire spear
#

we have a 2mw turbine in a park downtown. i think at the time it was the largest in north america. they ran it for maybe 20 years as a trial.

#

1mwh average for that turbine.

#

hm

prisma briar
sudden forge
#

Unfortunately adding to my woes, I have a rooftop facing the wrong direction for solar, and am in a rental anyway

dire spear
#

cant really have a personal turbine i dont think here. cheap (ish) solar will be more useful to me.

dire spear
sudden forge
#

And here, the efficiency diff between heat pumps and gas boiler+radiators as we use here, kinda equals out on cost to run

#

So fitting a heat pump, not ever going to have a return on investment

dire spear
#

gas. thats so 80s

gleaming crater
#

When the market price is effed heat pumps don’t always work out

sudden forge
#

mains gas is much much cheaper per unit than electricity is

#

to a ratio that roughly equals the efficiency gain of the heatpump

dire spear
sudden forge
#

the 2 basically cancel out to "yeah you pay the same either way"

#

and thats completely excluding the costs of installing one

gleaming crater
#

At least you get aircon with a heat pump

dire spear
#

see its gone the opposite here. gas gdoubled in price and electricity is more or less fixed

sudden forge
#

running the radiators on them

#

so no, dont get AC on them

gleaming crater
#

Eww lol

dire spear
#

whats the point of that?

#

haha

sudden forge
#

Easier retrofit in a home already using a boiler

#

and if you have a hot water tank (common here, though I dont have one), then they can also provide your hot water

dire spear
#

meh

gleaming crater
#

Give me central forced air before a radiator please lol

dire spear
#

just the idea of radiators and a boiler is offensive to me

#

haha

sudden forge
#

In my lifetime, I havent been in a single domestic setting with forced air

#

we just do not do that here

gleaming crater
#

It’s pretty much bog standard here

dire spear
#

not even in scottland where its colder/

sudden forge
#

No, even many nordic countries use radiators

dire spear
#

force air is the norm here.

gleaming crater
#

Plus isn't it more efficient than radiant heat?

dire spear
#

big furnace with 500,000btu.

sudden forge
#

both pretty much same

dire spear
#

yeah. provided you arent losing heat they are the same

gleaming crater
#

With forced air you get to keep heating the same air warmer and warmer

sudden forge
#

but this is it, this is all that warms my study

dire spear
#

force air in theory will be more uniform

sudden forge
#

with radiator you keep warming the same air warmer and warmer

dire spear
#

no ventilation though

gleaming crater
#

I'd argue the same reason a convection oven is better than a radiant one...

sudden forge
#

Except these things are mostly convective 😛

dire spear
#

i have resistive heaters for the moment. til i get the new system

prisma briar
dire spear
#

my house originally had a wood stove in the middle.

sudden forge
#

they raise an updraft through their central core

#

And essentially cycle the air through the room slowly

dire spear
#

then in the 60s they installed baseboard radiators and a boiler. horrible.

sudden forge
#

baseboard radiators are pretty shitty

dire spear
#

very shitty

prisma briar
#

Had those at my first apartment after I moved out of my parents house, they were terrible.

sudden forge
#

these more modern ones though, work pretty well

dire spear
#

yeah its common in some older appartments here

sudden forge
#

This one is a dual core, you can get triple core units these days too

dire spear
#

you can also just run pex in the floor.

prisma briar
#

That apartment had electric as a flat fee so I just ran space heaters everywhere

sudden forge
#

the only issue they have with heat pumps is that heat pumps tend to have a lower working temperature for the fluid

dire spear
#

nice warm floor

#

but in all cases, use way more power than a heat pump

#

unless the boiler is a heat pump of course

#

we dont really have those here

sudden forge
#

And so a radiator thats area was sized up based on 80c fluid, but running on 60c fluid, becomes inadequate

gleaming crater
#

Around here I use my furnace as much to filter the air when there are forest fires in the summer

#

Can't always open a window to cool down either

sudden forge
#

That said many newer heat pumps are now able to run the system at 80c

Heatpump water heaters never made a ton of sense to me. They don't really get your water super hot and they dump cold air out you need to deal with.

sudden forge
#

THeyre splits

dire spear
sudden forge
prisma briar
dire spear
#

ive seen the ones you are talking about

#

real stupid

#

ha

sudden forge
#

Pretty much, the systems we run have the hot side indoors replacing where the boiler went, and the cold side outdoors

prisma briar
#

Yea, the one I saw in person dumped into the room

#

Was basically a window A/C slapped on a water tank

sudden forge
#

I have seen the free standing hot water cylinders with heat pumps, but thats not what we use here

dire spear
#

the main issue with electric heat is capacity. like an instant water heater needs 120amps. thats not easy to do. gas flow is (virtulally) unlimited in comparison. so 200k+ btu is easy

sudden forge
#

Hence why we dont have the instant water heater

#

Hot side of the heat pumps we use here can heat a water tank

dire spear
prisma briar
#

You can get a normal tank electric heater that only draws like 2kw

sudden forge
#

Work does have a few of the instant ones though

#

spicy

dire spear
#

that was gas though

#

fancy new german kit they put in the house before i bought it... and then i ripped it out and sold it for $2500 haha

#

thats was 96k btu. (26kw?) nice and adequate, but not when gas prices skyrocket

sudden forge
#

i've got an ESPHome setup now running per room thermostats with my radiators though

dire spear
#

i have an ecobee

#

which is actually doing quite well

sudden forge
#

discovered the valve heads for underfloor heating manifolds fit british radiators

sudden forge
dire spear
#

oh so each rad can be a zone?

sudden forge
#

yup

dire spear
#

my system had a tyco controller with 4 pump controllers. then grunfos pumps

sudden forge
#

the sonoff r2 down there is reflashed with esphome, provides a thermostat entity to home assistant and a single binary sensor, and imports temperature from the zigbee room temp sensor I have in here already

#

self manages its relay output, the binary sensor simply indicates in HA whether the radiator is on

dire spear
#

i want to hack my electric fireplace to respond to the thermostat.

sudden forge
#

then a Shelly 1 also reflashed on the boiler monitors all the binary sensors for each controller I have setup and enables the boiler accordingly

#

the only room that is any different is the lounge, it doesnt have a valve interface on it

#

Manual taps on it still, refitting it with a valve is on the todo list

#

its still got an esp32 presenting a thermostat card and managing a heat demand for that room though

prisma briar
dire spear
#

ha

#

eyah

#

in this case all it really is is a blower heater with 2 750w elements. (and some lights)

sudden forge
#

yeah I have an electric heater I refitted with zigbee at one point

dire spear
#

it is just for backup if the heat pump fails at -30c

sudden forge
#

yup, mines on a home assistant generic thermostat and set for a much lower temp than the radiator in that zone is

#

and is basically only there if the gas packs up somehow

dire spear
#

my condo heat pump failed only once in the heat, never in cold (before dying after 16 years)

#

i have no idea what the power use was though, i didnt pay for power.

sudden forge
#

small home, 3 breakers only

#

been pretty easy to throw a shelly 3EM at that problem now

#

its not been active for long, and turns out I dont use my oven much

dire spear
#

ha

#

i use my oven and cook top at minimum probably 1kwh a day.

#

90% of my power is heat though. in the months i dont need heat or ac, i use like 6 or 8 kwh a day total

#

so when i get solar, i will be earning up to maybe 40kwh a day back

#

which will then offset winter when the solar doesnt do much

tidal bronze
sudden forge
#

boiler has only been on for a grand total of 30 minutes today

#

electric front, used 3.64 units

dire spear
#

i use up to 100kwh a day for heat. although its not very cold today

sudden forge
#

and I have checked, the metering on the shelly and on my energy provider at the end of a 5kWh consumed day were within 2 or 3Wh of each other

dire spear
#

nice

dire spear
sudden forge
#

I was previously thinking about doing the old monitor the LED on the meter trick

#

But where's the fun in that

#

I only had three breakers and the Shelly went on sale on black Friday

dire spear
#

vs sept

sudden forge
#

Took awhile to get around to fitting it though

#

That resistive heat is just nasty

dire spear
#

yes

#

but also, its really cold and i have giant holes

#

in the ceiling letting air out

sudden forge
#

I was basically running pure resistive heat for 2 weeks over winter when one of my radiators sprung a leak and drained the system for me

#

But I was just isolating self to 2 rooms

dire spear
#

im right in the efficiency zone for the heat pump for the last month. my bill would be 40-50% of what it is this month. (save $150)

#

but in comparison. if i foam the roof, the bill will probably be 15% of that it is this month

#

soo, foam first. heat pump later

sudden forge
#

Yeah, good insulation goes a darn long way

dire spear
#

and air sealing

sudden forge
#

My cat got extra snuggly

#

Harvesting the warmth off of me

dire spear
#

ha

sudden forge
#

I couldnt complain, she was a good hot water bottle

#

But it is just me in this house so it was pretty viable to keep something set up and the weather wasn't too harsh either

prisma briar
#

I put a 5000w heater in my garage to keep my garage above freezing, I got a large one to handle that if the garage door is left open. It can keep the room at 24C on the coldest days if the door is closed, though. That's really damn expensive, lol.

#

Like 70kwh that one day to the heater

dire spear
#

ha

#

yeah i have a 5kw heater when i bought the house and it had a hole in the floor and my power bill was $521

sudden forge
#

I have a great solution to heat my garage

#

Can't heat what doesn't exist 😉

dire spear
#

and it was still freezing

#

then i sprayfoamed the utility room and the bill was 300

prisma briar
#

My garage is almost fully insulated, there's about a 6' section of wall that's not. I put insulation on the door too

#

But the concrete slab at the bottom isn't and that never heats up

dire spear
#

ah nice

prisma briar
#

I considered dense foam with plywood on it to insulate the floor in the garage

#

I might still do that eventually

#

dense foam->plywood->vinyl fake wood flooring

dire spear
#

i did 1/2" foam, 1/4" ply, then kitchen tile.

sudden forge
#

Any garage I get will probably remain a concrete slab

dire spear
#

it did help

sudden forge
#

Wanna work on cars and bikes and such in one

prisma briar
#

If I did that and insulated that last wall my garage would basically be a habitable room

dire spear
#

its put a wood floor in my garage

prisma briar
#

Would need to replace some drywall and paint

sudden forge
#

And eh, it'd have to be hardy enough to take a car being jacked up on it

#

Without me going oh no I scratched the floor

dire spear
#

2x6 nail laminated timber cross ways. cheaper and nicer than a slab

sudden forge
#

Speaking of, I still need to try and make a new tool to adjust my coilovers

#

Theyre pretty seized, and just as it felt like it was gonna start moving, the spanner that came with them bent

dire spear
#

use a wrench instead

sudden forge
#

It's not just a nice hex head

#

It's a lock ring around the shock body

dire spear
#

spanners are not a real thing. they are called wrenches.

#

i have lots of the toothed wrenches cause they are used for CNC tooling

sudden forge
#

I'll call you a spanner if you keep disrespecting my language like that 😛

#

In British English it's a spanner

dire spear
sudden forge
#

Unless it's a pipe wrench in which case it's a wrench

dire spear
#

everything is a wrench here. not sure why.

sudden forge
dire spear
#

unless its pins. then thats a spanner

sudden forge
#

But yeah this is basically what I have to interface with

dire spear
#

just cnc a spanner from 4140 prehard

sudden forge
#

On the body of the shock itself

#

I don't have a cnc

dire spear
#

well, see thats your first problem

sudden forge
#

I also don't have the space and tooling to remove the shock from the car either really

#

So pretty limited to what I can do on an axle stand at the moment

prisma briar
#

One of the guys I lease a room to just got a small CNC, I need to figure out how to use it

dire spear
#

cnc is fun

#

small ones not usually very useful, but still fun

prisma briar
#

Closest I've done to CNC was strapping a dremel to a 3d printer gantry

dire spear
#

haha

sudden forge
#

These are the tools you get included with the shocks, garbage things

prisma briar
#

It's like half a wrench

dire spear
# sudden forge

the ones i have for cnc tooling are forged. might not be big enough though

sudden forge
#

Not sure exactly what they're made of, but it's not hardened for sure

prisma briar
#

So not the smallest

sudden forge
#

Though that design if it was too hard would probably damage the lock ring

prisma briar
#

I want to see if I can get the precision on that CNC to mill out traces on pcbs

#

I would so love to be able to DIY PCBs at home

dire spear
sudden forge
#

You ever get anywhere with the electronic shifter

prisma briar
#

I had it working on the ender 3 kinda, but it was too wobbly to get the pitch I needed for some of the qfps I was trying to work with

#

I did make a test board using a through hole atmel that worked though

dire spear
prisma briar
#

That reminds me, I wanted to try printing keycaps

#

I have a shit ton of gatreon switches and esp32s, I want to put them in boxes around to control lights

dire spear
#

fun

prisma briar
#

I already made one I mounted under my desk but I didn't have any proper keycaps for the functions the buttons do so it's just kind of a random collection of keycaps

dire spear
#

i can do custom engraved corian keycaps 😛

#

(they are super expensive sadly)

prisma briar
#

I was thinking either polycarbonate or PETG keycaps at 100% density

dire spear
dire spear
#

(ive tried... a lot)

#

ha

sudden forge
#

Still need to fix my printer

prisma briar
#

I think I could get the stem to work if I did PC

#

I'll go find a model and try one

dire spear
#

😛

sudden forge
#

Also would be nice if I had the space to learn to woodwork and such ya know

dire spear
#

the issues its both strength and tolerance.

#

so even if pc wont break, it wont fit clean

sudden forge
#

But oh well. Even bike maintenance is an outside or middle of the lounge job

prisma briar
#

My printer does pretty damn well on tolerance

dire spear
#

and even if you hit it, the cross will stretch out when you install it and over a short time come loose

#

anyhow. not stopping you from trying. just warning you it wont work too well

#

SLS nylon. these dont grip or stay on at all. I did stainless printed stems too. they dont have any give at all so they dont work either.

#

so i wounded up cncing them from delrin

#

downside, time which = money. $3 a stem. ah

prisma briar
dire spear
#

hehe. oh you should try it if you want.

prisma briar
#

Will be done in like 25 minutes

#

I'm trying PETG as a support interface for PC, never tried that before so that might not work

dire spear
#

oh. i guess i should wanr you every keycap file out there is wrong by a looong way. (profile, size, shape, offset)

prisma briar
#

lol, fair

dire spear
#

but it should still function

prisma briar
#

Worst case I'll glue the keycaps on, I have hundreds of switches in boxes.

dire spear
#

my cherry file

dire spear
prisma briar
#

I'd probably find a glue that stuck

#

These are optimally going to be mounted elbow height on walls

dire spear
#

most keycap crosses are pom (maybe not all). i had to buy special solvent primers and gluye from 3m to make it stick hehe.

#

but it should stick "enough"

#

to make the cap stay on nice

prisma briar
#

expanding spray foam

#

/s

dire spear
#

ha

#

ive really begun to hate spray foam. it seems like a great idea until you need to remove it

#

same with PL glue

prisma briar
#

When I ran my minisplits I had to cut 4" holes in the wall and walled them off with nylon tubes, I filled the nylon tubes with sprayfoam after everything was installed.

dire spear
#

thats not a bad use

#

rats looove to dig sprayfoam i found. so i hope you put a little mesh of somekind in there

prisma briar
#

I 3D printed plastic caps for them

#

for the outside part at least

dire spear
#

ah cool

prisma briar
#

Though I think one is cracked now

dire spear
#

mmm, i want chicken and bacon bucatini alfredo

#

oh, crap, im the waiter.. and the cook

prisma briar
#

Huh, my printer takes a while to preheat to PC temps

#

Never really paid attention to it before

dire spear
#

ah yeah. mine can take an hour.

#

(400x400_

prisma briar
#

Mine just hit temp

dire spear
#

i dont do pc, but i do nylon at 100c

prisma briar
#

256x256

#

Yea, I'm doing PC at 100

#

Well, 100 bed temp

#

The chamber isn't heated on my printer

dire spear
#

260 nozzle?

prisma briar
dire spear
#

my printer goes in a foam box so it keeps the chamber nice for nylon or abs

#

280!

prisma briar
#

I'm just doing the default settings for it

dire spear
#

mine dont go that high hah

prisma briar
#

Mine goes to 300C

#

And some people have done stupid stuff like separate the thermistor from the hotend to get them to go hotter

if theres any risk a squirrel or bird or some other animal can eat it is not allowed

steel crag

we don't have squirrels, and "other animals"

you sure you don't live in the wild west ? 😛

#

for rats you put the poison in a little plastic house outside

dire spear

steel crag

at least that's what we do here

prisma briar

Living somewhere that doesn't have any animals except rats sounds kinda sucky

dire spear

steel crag

dire spear

iguanas in new jersey?

steel crag

but sadly no land mammals except one very endangered species

steel crag

I don't live in new jersey

prisma briar

you're poisioning endangered rats?

steel crag
#

actually that's not strictly true, we have racoons but they aren't native

most our animal population is marine

as is most of the country 😄

prisma briar

those stairs are made of 2x4s actually. floors as well. laminated.

You know what else really helps on staircases? Handrails

Stayed in an airbnb place a couple of weeks ago, felt like I was about to die every time I had to descend the stairs because there was nothing to hold onto

ha. handrail will be on the other side. i havent drawn that wall in yet

solar zealot
#

#

😄

#

Does the petg pc contact area fuse properly?

prisma briar
#

Not sure, this is the first print I've intentionally tried to fuse them

#

I tried PETG as support material earlier and it stuck to the PC pretty well

#

If this actually works and looks good I'll probably get a clear PC and a solid black PC and use just PC

solar zealot
#

👀

prisma briar
#

I might try just PETG too but I think PC is going to hold shape better for the stem

solar zealot
#

I think the normal ones are just abs

prisma briar
#

abs can be tricky to print to dimensional accuracy

#

Likes to warp and shrink as it prints

#

I've never been satisfied with ABS, personally.

sudden forge
#

Oh interesting. So inovelli could eventually do EU versions of their switches. I'll keep tabs

solar zealot
#

Smart switch companies still do not get it sadly

#

We don't need the most cursed looking assembly, just give us a proper insert and a bunch of default switch faces

sudden forge
#

I have a ZigBee 2 gang unit that is aesthetically pleasing enough

#

But it's build quality isn't the greatest

#

And it isn't the most functional

#

They've shown some renders for a European model, just proof of concept, and they look fine. But honestly I like their US ones, just resize it to fit an EU box, done

#

But a smart switch I can just stick in the wall and either use it with it switching the load with traditional bulbs or decouple it entirely. Thats interesting.

prisma briar
#

I did the first at .08mm layer height, this one was at .2mm layer height. The .08mm one fit a lot better.

#

Also I think I lost detail in the icon at .2mm

#

Also petg was warm to the point of being soft all the way through at pc bed temps

solar zealot

Neat

Or is that just how the black material ends up

solar zealot
#

So far I've had no issues printing petg either

#

Just have to let the bed cool down a bit to loose the print but that works for me

#

No idea why pla seems to be the wanted child when petg is nearly the same experience but the much better result

prisma briar
#

Personally I generally like the look of PLA better

#

PETG is shinier and imo tends to accentuate layer lines

That’s where fuzzy skin can be an awesome setting

prisma briar

fun, new keycap finished printing

#

🙃

gleaming crater
#

I bought an 8k resin printer just for printing keycaps

#

You can’t see any of layer lines

orchid rose
#

Oh printing your own keycaps is an interesting idea that somehow never occured to me. Now I wish I had my old Logitech keyboard with those useless G keys that I could make something like this for

solar zealot
prisma briar
#

You still would've been stuck with those shitty romer g switches, lol.

solar zealot
#

Well first is effectively the same as wet petg

prisma briar
#

This smooth keycap feels pretty good to type on.

#

I popped my 'e' off and put it there to try it out

#

I don't like the textured plate for keys though

forest edge
#

yup sooner or later we will be back tracking because "newer" is not better

assuming newer generations don't pop out too dumb to act considering the current rate

if i do my reconstruction i will have access and they can replace the rest. they need to replace the meter anyway,. so may as well do it all at once

The utilization of gallium nitride has definitely been a step forward in electronics

electroboom is a good one too

fellow canadish

forest edge
prisma briar

electrobooms videos are all "Here look at this scary thing I made and watch me hurt myself with it"

dire spear
#

yup

#

but its cool cause he uses the accidents to teach safety

primal laurel
#

Electroboom videos were part of the curriculum in electrical engineering, not even joking

prisma briar
#

https://www.youtube.com/@ElectricianU I've found this channel to be really good for answering home wiring questions

dire spear

although one accident was apparently real

primal laurel

Also really like that channel that does bizarre chemical experiments

Forgot the name

nilered is canadian I think

yeah from ottawa

primal laurel

The one that has a series about an old chemical recipe book

when it's something that has little chance of leading you to hurt yourself or others than it's ok. as long as you don't preach it as gospel just because someone on a video said so then nno harm or fowl

prisma briar
forest edge

but most the crap I've seen on youtube videos are at most partial truths

primal laurel
prisma briar
forest edge
#

well thats because you don't know any better

dire spear
#

had to find good home automation channels, cause 90% of them are just shilling products

prisma briar
#

I never watched any videos on HA stuff

ocean oar
#

I don't bother because 98% of it is "look at this cool product that's only sold in North America"

dire spear
#

also never try to look for video/cinema gear reviews. they thing a review is opening a box and calling their free sponsored gear amazing.

prisma briar
forest edge
prisma briar
#

Mostly other channels I watch touching on automation for a bit

dire spear
#

usually i know enough about what im doing to just want a very specific solution. like how x plugs into y.

#

youtube is not great for that

prisma briar
#

Yea, when I need to control some weird device I don't google how to automate it, I look at what communication methods the device accepts control over.

dire spear
#

(for electronics)

#

for construction youtube is amazing though. "how to nail this type of connection" 39 videos pop up

#

"how to flash a window with 3m tape"

#

etc

#

surprisingly amazing

forest edge
#

now see thats where the trouble starts

prisma briar
#

It's not like all books are good either.

dire spear
#

your inspector will kick you in the head if its wrong anyway

#

but the code book is often difficult to translate into visual understanding. watching soemone DO it can go a long way

primal laurel
#

There are a lot of crap books in engineering. Crap and expensive

#

Luckily there is libgen so i can preview it hehe

dire spear
#

like my NLT flooring. "boards mst be sufficiently spiked" is what code says. that the f does that mean

forest edge
#

are there shit books? sure

dire spear
#

watch a video.. oh, it means nails this spacing penetrating at least 3 boards

prisma briar
#

Like, what? 🤣

dire spear
#

all the books are online anwya

forest edge
dire spear
#

video are either a translation, or an accessory to the written material

prisma briar
#

what does that even mean

you can get continuing education videos online that are certified by regulating bodies

forest edge
#

hell most shit that is "certified" comes via a manual or book

dire spear
#

if you rely on just one source (even the code book which can have errors) you are an idiot anyway

forest edge
primal laurel
#

I learned calculus by watching videos from professor Leonard. Highly recommend him

prisma briar
#

If you rely on just the code book you're a fool. Nobody ever became a master at anything by only picking up a code book.

forest edge
#

are there instructional videos produced for learning? sure.. but lets be real those are not generally lost in the seas of youtube

dire spear
primal laurel

3blue1brown proved there is a market for in depth high quality educational videos

prisma briar
# forest edge so you are broading outside of YT?

The accreditation programs have to be done outside of YT to get professional credit for the videos for things like license renewals but they're still just youtube videos. That electrician channel I linked earlier has a program like that.
