yeah, city here is suuuper anal unless you pay them off :x
Most places in the US have code enforcement for free-standing buildings
seriously please go look up before flapping your lips
Because they don't want some outdated 'Whatever, it's good enough' attitude to kill people
your motorboating is leavbing us all wet here
garden sheds under a certain size (lawn mower type) noone cares. but anything rated for human occupancy needs to be strictly to code
Could you be any more old
you must be why he needed that 3ft high foundation
Building codes are not a new thing
for a 2x2 space
my shed is 12x12
close enough
actually the steel one is 10x16
I don't know why you think the size matters
It's a free-standing permanent structure
permanent being quite key
A billboard has code regulations and it's practically 2D
You can find a code book at your local library if you want to learn more about how to not be irresponsible when building something, Sonoma
Otherwise this all boils down to "Stubborn old man refuses to see the value in code"
you've already shown you have absolutly no idea wtf you are talking about
Pot calling the kettle black there
more of "man shouts at clouds because they willfully misiterpret discussion
lol i was just about to write something about trolling
ahnyways...
Honestly I wish he'd go away, every time he tries to contribute to a conversation it's the stupidest stuff ever
but no, i am not trolling this round
this worries me
I suspect his house is going to be a superfund site when he dies
he's canadian, for all we know his code enforcment will require him to wrap his outhouse with a condom so it's irrelevant what american codes are in his case
What a stupid string of words
the video of the shed foundation is pretty universal throughout the US with some exceptions
Our sheds were on cinderblock foundations
dosen't matter
"pretty universal" except where it's not
sheds in the US are not exactly strictly enforced
"doesn't matter" yea it does
nope
We had our shed inspected
Inspections are literally designed to weed people with your attitude out, Sonoma
Because of all the stupid structures it's led to
The law for accessories is under 15m2 you need no permit or inspection if it has no plumbing and is not meant for occupancy. BUT, it does still need to be built to code for liability.
inb4 "inspections are stupid waaah just do it"
look up sheds.. when you purchase a prebuilt it comes with thefooting that is designed to sit directly ontop of bare ground. only some city codes come into play about requiring gravel or block or concrete in some locations
its universal
in the us
also not relevant to ANYTHING we are talking about
If you look up a prebuilt shed it's going to expect you to pour a slab or have a foundation
at least it seems...better not bring out the mosquittos though!!
incorrect
you keep showing just how little you know about this lol
I can't find a single shed listed that's just 4x4's on dirt for the foundation
what did i say
A bunch of noise
most prebuiots come with that "foundation" attached on the bottom, they call them skids
can you block people in discord?
Yep. BTW did you notice an uptick last year. Never had mosquitos ever, but had a few bites last year. Strange
I'm looking at them now, they all want a slab poured or a foundation.
what do you mean by "they"?
jfc
show me what you are looking at
weve had such weird spring cycles thats the last few years all the skeeters are dying off
yea massive uptick...we have a new invasive species thats super hard to get rid of. Their eggs can stay dormant and dry for up to a year and can hatch in wet soil....its those ankle biters and are hard to see
Just stop, man.
everytime there is rain walk around the perimeter of teh house and tip over and puddles of water, the water is what allows them to hatch
like i said
Like I said, you're a stubborn out of touch old man.
you're*
my shed plans call for a slab on grade with footing, or a stem wall on footing.
see
Yep gotta empty all the fountains
Sonoma, every time you pop in and try telling people how it actually is because of some half-baked experience you had 40 years ago all you get is everyone telling you you're wrong and to not do it that way. A normal person would have got the hint by now.
we were talking about US code
lol everyone
Yes, literally everyone you pull this shit on I've ever seen has called you out for having no idea what you're rambling about.
You do this quite regularly
k, i am blocking him please stop engaging so i dont have to block you to. ๐
I cannot help that you got caught flapping your lips on a subject you know nothing about and then felt backed into a corner
just what senstive kids do
Pot calling kettle black again
wrong on that one
anyhow. i want to build the shed from my video in someones yard as a demo. i need to find someone near me who wants a shed now. haha
You're wrong on everything
one thing my generation isn't is sensitive lol
i have no room left in my yard for another structure
Which is why you're still continuing and trying to claim you won an internet argument?
which one is that?
why they say each generation is getting dumber.. kids pop out thinking they know everything and refuse to listen to anyone who may know something that cannot be googled
you have a very odd obsession with 'this generation'
i do
its getting kind of weird
Social decline is a geriatric myth
I want to see it self destruct
And we don't, hence building codes
lol he just cannot let it go
And not putting lead in everything
You're still going too, genius.
so, what does everyone think of pineapple on pizza?
Should be against code
see, now we cant be friends
fish on pizza?
pineapple pizza is the greatest canadian invention. just ahead of insulin
Anchovies are alright but I hate how the smell of a fresh can lingers
my brother put shriimp on pizza. i had to disown him
bbq chicken pizza
i made a stuffed crust bacon pizza the other week
oh no.. insect breached your bubble?
i'll mail ya some bot flies to let loose and multiply
Bugs, something I can't stand.
good thing you don't live on earth then huh
Must not run Windows then
Run windows?
Yea, the thing that came after DOS?
oh no, freedom units
Hmm.. interesting take
now I have to convert everything to normal units
haha
yeah canada is metric "officially" but people still cling to the past
the best is when we start to MIX units
or measure distances in hours
haha
(i think some americans do that too)
Depends on the city. Dense cities time makes more sense than for more rural areas, imo
yeah fair
I dont get why you would measure something in cups though. Every cup is different. Okay someone came up with a measurement cup but still, makes no sense
why is that hard to understand?
the principle in the 1800s was it was a "relative" system.
My tablespoons hold more than a tablespoon too
1 cup is a cup. regardless of what size that cup is
also I have a personal vendetta against the imperial system because it made electrical engineering more difficult
later on it became an actyal standardised measurement. 1 cup is 246ml or so
The imperial system makes a lot more sense when you realize it was meant to be accessible and practical for a laymen to use and the measurements try to be based around to the real-life scenarios where they're used.
nw we gave gram scales in the kitchen, pyrex graded dishes, its now better to go back to weights
And these days the imperial system standards are all based on the metric system standards which are based on universal constants
imperial outlived its usefulness in the 60s probably.
for general use
but we all still cling to it
Yea, nowdays metric is the clear winner, but I can see how long ago needing to know something was around a foot was more important than needing to know it's exactly 30.48x the arbitrary distance 1cm is, though.
yeah

@tidal bronze https://i.imgflip.com/4ikbcr.jpg
That was pretty funny, and accurate
I was today years old I discovered that
and
were added to show people what they should press
O_o
I am starting to like LD2450. Time to mass deploy.
they're supposed to make it easier, but it doesn't always work
is also good for threatening a ban
not really. on dark background it's not exactly easy to make out least of all a very unimpressive hammer icon
i guess if you were a nail
I guess you never heard of the dnepropetrovsk maniacs.
prior to recent events the only thing i knew about Ukraine was they like to make things out of coffee grounds
I make coffee out of them
they make all sorts of stuff like glasses frames
a useful tool
I have something for you to google too. Kopi luwak.
i cant remember the last time i used a hammer on an actual nail. ๐
while nail guns are nice, they do certainly make one lazy
I never used one but I'd probably be scared of them.
what would one be nailing that requires a gun
scared of a nail gun?
don't be jealous
maybe i'll shoot you a tshirt to make ya feel better
not a raccon but i wont say no to a shot shirt
Conrcete fasteners sometimes use literal 22ga shells. Fire them into the slab.
do they come in a bundle with the kitchen gun
kitchen gun?
oh god
you just linked a commercial from the bbc
hahaha
the irony
an iron of some sort yes
bbc makes satire video.. americans go "hey, where can i buy that?
althoguh in fairness, the uk is... .uh... not doing alright right now either
no but they have knife and tea licenses i heard
well. yes...
and they cant park where they park
So how is Canada doing?
canda is "so far" alright, but i think theres a big crash coming.
You can get .22lr blanks at Home Depot
Crash? Really?
economic
don't ask,, they having racial equality issues right now
we'll see
its hard to predict even if you are a so called expert
2008 did very little to us for example
barely a blip
it will be the next mess yet another generation will need to clean up
pretty much
Bad maple syrup harvest this year?
and those generation will pop out of the womb with the be all solutions no doubt
it wouldnt be all that bad if the weather were any cool around here
ha. i wonder if the upset winters do anything to maple syrup production
but without
Running out of 'sorrys'
haha
I just instinctively read that in a Canadian accent
So yep a blip
sorry ya lost your house eh? heres some kraft dinner
are you nuts?
2T is tiny
You guys are on par with Brazil
lol
(but they have nice weather)
and syrup
and cartel issues, its brazil
Wait where are we talking about?
um. same as brazil, but with with 1/6 the population
canada in relative terms is very rich
You manage your forest better too
If Canada is America's hat, the population is just the visible hairline
my friend is from brazil. she is never excited to go home
I wouldn't mind a vacation down there but I don't think I'd want to live there
Awesome beef, not so awesome humidity.
I like living in a place that has seasons.
i hate humidity. toronto is relatively humid in summer and near 40C sometimes. yuk
I like living in a dry high altitude place with seasons.
that would be ok. i used to live in northern BC. dry ish, relatively stable weather (-35 winter, plus 35 summer, but not eratic so you could get used to it)
bike trails in the back yard
ski hill accross the street
hehe
I'm about 5 miles from the mountain Stargate took place in
(in-universe, real-world it was in Vancouver)
stargate? the tv show? that was made in toronto haha
i had a lot of friends on that show
SG1 at least was in Vancouver
I'll take LA weather over anything and if need anything out of the norm then there's drive-thru weather. ๐
amanda tapping
this was the show. they probably filmed multiple places. but production was at alliance atlantis here
Managed to put a brad nail in a finger once. Thankfully no permanent damage
never hold what your nailing into from the bottom
It's not about it being a gun. I also don't like table saws but have no problems with a hand circular saw. I can't really explain.
im fine with table saws, hate circular saws. although my track saw im not scared of
I have a SawStop for a reason
Though I thought you were saying the other way around
Also get the right clamps and wire brads bend to the side so adjust accordingly
yea i've had a few shoot out from the side
If you're using a nail gun I'd do my best to avoid having anything you care about downrange
still beats using a hammer on the super tiny ones
fingers
i only have a framing nailer. electric. is a little scary
i use screws for almost everyting thats is allowed though
I didn't realize it was possible to stan screws until I got GRK to mount custom cabinets
mdf trim is so crap. cheap looks nice, but so easy to damage
ha, yeah, they make some geuninely creative things
I'm getting ready to rip my kitchen cabinets out and replace them
Need to level the floor too
Going to be fun, never done that before
Also patch I'm sure a million mouse holes that are there now
i tried to level my floor, and then had to rip it all out. theres 2 broken joists, the spans and spacings are bad, and you cant get under the house to do anything. so all i did was put 1" of plywood down and new hardwood :/
hanging cabinets are easy with a few tricks
well engineered wood
I was considering self-leveling concrete
Nice screws are nice to have though
That's exactly my fear. Losing an eye like that.
I need to figure out how much it'll weigh
thats what i did but i need 2" and the weight then caused the floor to sag and then it all cracked and tiles lifted and brok
was referring to alignment and leveling. but yes using the right screws is wise
Yea, the slope in my kitchen is probably 4" deep at the worst
the rest is actully retty good
It goes down from one wall to another wall that's shifted
What's fun is shimming the entire island you're installing because after 60 years your house isn't quite level anymore
tiny hosue kitchen im getting quoted now.
Nothing in my house is level
"almost" ikea able, but a couple custom bits
Hanging shelves sucks because some of the walls do stupid shit like tilt inwards
well i can promise you it likely wasn't level to begin with lol
eek
Not a lot, a few degrees at worst, barely enough for things to start rolling
all interior wall in my house are now steel except the one centre load bearing 2x3 wall
I've cooked on tilted camp stoves so I was not going to deal with that every day on our cooktop
hehe
Most stoves I've owned have had adjustable feet for leveling
screw them in/out to adjust the height
what a nice kitchen design
Cooktop is mounted direct to the counter, it's not a full oven/stove
my front house wall is 1.5" out bottom to top. they put fake stone on the front, and garden beds, and it just trapped water and the sill plate rotted to nothing
how much is such house
the tiny house?
yes
countertops are not as easy
I've repaired a spot like that
It's stilted off the footer now
the target is 100k cdn. plus devilvber, site work, permits, etc
how much space would that be apr
luckily in mine theres a cast in ledge on the foundations, so the joists didnt fall. only made nice doors for rat houses. ha. i put in a new plate and wire mesh
apr?
approximately
ooh. the math for MY yard model suite, with a basement is 150k all in.
cdn
keep in ming i have to dig 7 ft of rock for th ebasement. so thats a good bit of money
I love excavator rentals
there are gov grants and programs, so the goal is that your mortgage on 150k plus taxes and the basics is LESS than the $985 maximum rent to meet the grant rules
305 inside, 390 outside
that seems pretty reasonable
nice
hopoe to have them for sale end of year ish. we'll see how that all goes. lots of logistics in temrs of being able to join the 3 modules on tise
do they get put into a special location or something, because the property size isnt standard either
laws here allow you to put one in the back yard of a main house, provided all buildings cover less than 40% of the land.
you arent (yet) allowed to put on on land alone
the contracting internet has been fruitful the last few days...
there are only so many Darwin awards to be given out...
hehe
It's weird that someone looks at this and says yep that how we gonna roll with it
yeah. right down to the vinyl wood grain on the shower doors
this was planned and deliberate
in all seriousness though, i think its mis captioned. i think it is actually a wheelchair elevator.
How would that work
this type of thing
obviously there needs to be some form of ramp with it
Interesting thing
im just guessing. it may ell be a shower too
ha
but i dont want to beleive anyopne is that stupid
success
Looks like the typical airbnb cabin lol
oh man. ive been seeing a lot of "units" where the shower and toilet are just in the bedroom. no walls. How is that a thing!
I mean i sleep in my kitchen
Bathe in your sink?
Walls are for the bourgeois now apparently lol
seems so
one big room, thats some expensive talk!
if i have triplets ima gonna do bunk beds like that
It's a Farbman
People were comparing this setup to a prison cell. https://seattle.curbed.com/2016/12/8/13885228/u-district-micro-apartment-toilet-tiny-prison-cell
Yes. Seattle.
is there a kitchen?
you're lookin' at it!
The unit is actually inside a congregate living building so youโll share the kitchen and living room space with other tenants.
1k here at least gets you a tiny basement bachelor. not nice, but not ... that
my brother had a place that had a shared bathroom. weird. (was from the 1800s or early 1900s in montreal)
I think it's a little bigger than my dorm room in college, for 2 people
ha
But no bathroom or plumbing, that was down the hall
HWhat?
?
Now I've seen everything ๐
What? It's the classic Montana 10 tax dodge
what am i missing?
States with higher vehicle registration fees will often have people running around with Montana 10-year plates because they don't levy fees after 10 years (most states don't do that until 25-30 years)
O_o
that plate says 2024 no?
here you just get a new insurance sticker every year. you can keep the actual plates forever
well, maybe not forever
til they design a new one
ha
That and you almost never see a MT plate here. MT plate on Tesla. Oh boy. ๐คฃ
ahh
Too funny. Everyone wants to take a peek at the driver.
how far from montana are you. ive seen montana plates in toronto
ive seen most us state plates here are some point
1200 miles to Los Angeles.
ahh
It's not the distance. It's the city. Lol
Lmao.
i dont think i know any montana people
minisota yes
kansas
i lived in LA for 1 year
rode my bike from my place in burbank through hollywood, got to dogers stadium and no longer felt comfortable. turned back
ha
I don't think any place, anywhere in the world is unsafe. As long as you know what you are doing.
yeah. im not afraid of any place in toronto but i get "told" all these no go horrible crime ridden youll get murdered areas... one was my moms aparment block.
ha
(which is perfectly nice)
I travel a lot. I don't believe in any of these "no go places" There is no such thing, as long as you do what the locals do.
my brother went to Lima. he wanted to visit an old church. touristy place. so he walked from the hotel..... through gang land... the lady at the church was like "ok, how are you alive? ill call taxi"
he also went on a bus that almost fell off a cliff
they have some sketch mountain roads
i never go anywhere. i hate travelling
They don't live in Montana. They're dodging taxes
It's the best thing ever, I travel for food.
Just like Delaware
oooh, i get it now
register out of state
thats not allowed here, i think you can have out of provicnce plates to 6 months
Same here
one thing i noticed in LA was a lot of nic cars, bmw, porsche, etc that were smashed up. like smashed fenders. but they just drove them like that, never fixed em
someone told me is was cause they didnt report the accidents for insurance
dunno
It's like 90 days most places here but it's not enforced very well.
Never noticed that, then again I don't drive much.
Most of the time in my airport ride sleeping lol
lol
pre 911. cant do any of that anymore haha
I average about 150 flights a year. I am a master at sleeping
eeeeew
heck im not sure my cousin does that and he flies an a320
haha
hmm. seems 1000h a year is a limit or something. canada be big, so thats 3-5 hours a flight
BTW Toronto got some kickass food.
does it? ha. it has pizza hut. burger king.
nah, thgeres a few nice spots
but i mostly cook my own food
so i dont go to a lot of restaurants
150 flights a year? One every two days?
Two every five days.
5 every 2 day
hello everyone i am trying to flash my sonof zigbee pro with tasmota or something else , which allows me to connect zigbee devices and make those devices visible in Home Assistant (using MQTT) . is there someone who successfully achieved this ? please go to #zigbee-archived ๐ ๐

time to go back to horse and buggy https://youtu.be/t9DNBxpvxs0?si=3BCknyCsfCU1d_AH
Auto repair costs have been rising for years, but recently they've spiked. Experts say it's likely a mix of factors including heavier, faster and more complex vehicles, riskier driving behavior, new technology, and labor and supply shortages. Repair shop owners say they canโt find enough technicians despite paying six-figure salaries. As technol...
I was actually thinking about this the other day...i wonder if you get a horse, if all those climate activist would complain about the Co2 levels of a horse vs. a car ๐
It was very insightful though. Thanks for sharing.
people only need a donkey. Those sports horses need too much food
there will always be someone to complain about everything
If you got a horse the neighbors would probably complain about the shit it leaves all over the road lol
That was a real problem in cities in the horse and buggy days
just invest in a bun bag
@tidal bronze well you all complained about a water shortage then turned around and complain about having it. https://apnews.com/article/california-storms-atmospheric-river-pineapple-express-18997dd8bac897c4115d0f453d0bc058
Isn't that basically the crux of environmental change? You get more weather extremes instead of calmer and more predictable cycles
thats what happens when you get more than 50% of annual rain fall in a single storm lol
we aint built for rain lol
Arid landscapes are terrible at absorbing large volumes of water regardless
Dried out dirt is significantly slower at absorbing water than moist dirt so in areas that are really dry the water tends to pool on the surface and flow around
Its basically the same as an oxidation layer on metal
And the same reason why good coffee brewing starts with a "bloom" before pouring the rest of the water
If history is any judge, do not bet against the Dutch on staying dry
Genius engineering
Gekoloniseerd
kokosnoten zijn geen specerijen
Letting the lights turn on before the morning alarm is not good for the WAF, I think it's time to re-do my bed occupancy sensor lol
now that's a sexy AR/VR headset
Who actually sleeps with one of those instead of just buying blackout curtains?
People who have a husband who have an automation to turn on the lights before the alarm goes
Lol touchรฉ
I put more failsafe in the automation that burned me lol for now
But it might be time to dig out my old sensor that had load cells under each bed leg and redesign it to be more stable lol
You can measure breathing rate with mmwave and detect if you're sleeping or not
lmao
People in hotels or on planes
Planes I get but I've yet to stay in a hotel without good curtains
I've yet to stay in a hotel with curtains on the level of my blinds at home
What hotel groups?
Lmao last weekend I was in Brussels at the same hostel we were 5 years ago
The stickers of our study association were still on the roof
wtf is this? you uploading home videos of your gross food now?
took me a while to figure out there are several red and black umbrellas in that picture
is it raining in there?
No they're trying to be โจ Fancy โจ
i am living on the edge
started a nine hour print without checking the settings
With things like they are in 2024, we need all the entertaintment we can get
What printer?
I do that on my Bambu all the time
I don't even check the default settings unless I need some specific property out of the end product
It may combust at random
I really need to get my Ender 3 back up
The spool holder is a rotating jewelry display with a hub glued on
I tried a long print once and when I woke up I found meters upon meters of spaghetti on my kitchen floor. I haven't had the courage to try those since. It even wrapped a ton of filament around the nozzle which I didn't even notice which caused all the subsequent prints fail as well ๐ฆ
The non-AMS spool holder sucks and kept tangling up my TPU so right now my spool holder is a screwdriver wedged between a screw hole and a wall
Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't
The filament is not the best but as good as I managed to afford
I'll send a pic if it later
Kept flipping the TPU off the spool on retracts then wrapping tight around the spool holder
Bambus can technically do TPU, that's about all I can say for their competency with it.
i dont think you want it. its a bit dirty and gross now.
Pizza rat. Never forget
mmm pizza
I wonder if home depot carries MC cable that's just the ground conductor inside
I need like a 10/0 mc cable, lol
they sell bare ground wire. normally ground wire is bare when separate
I considered that but I can't guarantee nothing will disturb it if it's bare
I have enough flex conduit for it but that sounds like such a waste
https://www.homedepot.com/p/Southwire-100-ft-4-1-AC-Stranded-Bare-Armored-Ground-Cable-55160223/311042849
Apparently yes?
Southwire Duraclad Bare Armored Ground Cable is suitable for use as a grounding electrode conductor for Residential Service Systems. Southwire Duraclad Bare Armored Ground Cable is constructed with a bare soft-drawn copper. A galvanized steel interlocking armor is applied over the bare conductor. Southwire Duraclad Bare Armored Ground Cable meet...
Not really, I'm just retrofitting a ground to a receptacle that was wired before ground was required.
overkill
There's 6awg too
It's only a 30A circuit, I believe all I'd need is 10awg for the ground
If I'm reading nec 250.122 right
My dryer was on 8/3 aluminum with no ground conductor
this will also need 10/3 burried line
ah, we dont really do aluminium here except mains
its legal, but noone really uses it
I only have aluminum for the dryer and the oven
copper is so expensive right now though
Yea, that's why I was considering just using a bare wire
I have a strand of bare 8awg
what about digikey. maybe they sell bare wire.
If I go bare I'm just going to use this wire I have on hand
ah
I'm not going to use a single 8awg conductor for anything else
I might run it bare along the ceiling then drop it through a box into like a 5' run of flex
for ac90 tek90 i have a commercial place. home depot has very little of that here
This is yet another place the US desperately needs to convert to metric
ha
Wires measured mmยฒ are so much easier to think about
are they?
Coming into it completely blind yea
but once you've used awg a bit it's not hard
mm^2 means something on it's own, it's the area of the cross section
awg means nothing without a reference
for code, its a bit like a 2x4, which is not 2 or 4 inches. but you KNOW what its for and where its allowed
anyhow
the 2x4s in my house are 1.625x3.625
2x4 (8/4) is the rough sawn dimension. they are then dried, and shaped to a final size after drying. but over time they went from 1.75, to 1.625 to 1.5 final dimensions. partly to save wood and partly thats what testing showed was adequate structure.
anyhow. some houses here have literal tree trunks for floors
ha
commercial "nail laminated timber" is another cool toronto thing. where they took 2x4s or 2x6s on edge and nailed them all together.
My floor joists are on metal stilts, the joists and everything above are wood
Metal stilts are on concrete pads
jacks or actual structural permanent posts?
Originally jacks then a previous owner had foundation work done and they put a few posts in
theres not a ton of metal in houses here (older ones). almost entirely wood and brick in this area
ah, so not original spec
Yea, the house was settling weird. There's about 5" slope between one corner of my house and the other
my floor could use some jacks
ignoring the subfloor problem in the kitchen
i have one more room to refloor, and its the worst one. withthe broken joists. i may cut a big hole and try to jack it up. but i also dont want to then distrupt everythign else
break all the drywall
Heh, I cut out about a 5' strip of drywall so I could relocate the outlet for my dryer and uncovered two split studs in it
doh
Had to cut them out and put in replacement pieces of 2x4 and some steel plates to hold them in place
Well, I didn't have to, pretty sure they weren't load bearing
I think someone just screwed too big of screws into them
I kind of wish I could've met the previous owner of this house
Some of the solutions he found to problems were, uh, creative
they butchered my poor house so bad.
When I moved in there were shelves in the garage framed with angle iron, with old hollow-core doors for the shelves themselves that were covered in the original shag carpet the house came with
There's also an outdoor patio area that they built a roof on by running joists between my house and the neighbor's house.
idfk how I'm going to clean that mess up
idfk how it got built in the first place
There's zero chance it's up to any code
ha
if i was rich and my land valuable (well more valuable) id just rip it all down and build new
but aint no body for time for that
ha
I found one of the guys I'm leasing a room to is regularly pulling 20A off of a 15A receptacle down a 30' extension cord, which is super. I'm going to run some 10/3 to a 4 gang block outlets out there evenly split between two 120v 30A circuits.
that partly why i want the tiny house though. so i can live in it if i need to rip aparty the main house. take all the joists out etc
There's a 30A circuit running out to a subpanel there but the only thing wired on it is a single 15A outlet
idk why
odd
Shhhh..... let me upgrade frigate to 13.1 in peace.
my house had remnants of knob and tube everywhere
My house was made in the 70s so nothing like that
The worst I have to deal with is aluminum
electrical panel got moved to a completely illegal location
Which basically meant I needed to buy a new screwdriver
weirdos
ha
all copper in this house, including every pipe. 3" copepr stack
gonna reuses that for something one day ha
oh? anything new thats cool?
My sewers are pvc but all my incoming pipes are copper
Super fast.
I just had all my iron ripped out and replaced with PVC last September
thats so descriptive
I had the iron pipe break under my house and didn't notice until I started smelling it, that was fun.
and steel framing. its not bad. just wish the structure was good
Thankfully I got insurance to cover cleanup for it
Well the DB to local makes a big difference. I just pulled the latest and upgraded the HACS. Let's see how goes. I am running 2 x TPU so it's always been fast to detect but the events are supers fast now.
my neighbour had a tree grow throigh their iron sewer
ah your running it as an addon
My parents had a tree grow through their sewer but the damaged part was all outdoors, shallow, and a shorter run than mine so it was comparatively cheap for them
what do you mean by local?
this was outside, but it flooded their basement
only house with a basement herte
ha
Mine cost me about 8k for the sewer and 6k for the cleanup that insurance covered all but $1000 of
noone wanted to dig the rock except them
@forest edge the cards etc HACS Frigate 5.1
also you need a sump to have a full basement here. cause the sewer is too high up
I feel I at least know enough about electrical to figure out what I need to do to safely/correctly accomplish something but I have no idea what I'm doing with plumbing, lol. I rerouted two pipes like 4' and the soldering looks like a toddler did it in a hurry.
plumbing is "easy" but to actually make anything fit in walls can be near impossible
Though that was also my first attempt at soldering so at least it doesn't leak
soldering, yeah, no. i use pex. much easier and cheaper now
I didn't bother. I was going to cut the pipes through the wall then I hit a section where it was 5 studs all mashed up to each other where two walls intersected and just gave up and routed it through the back corner of a closet.
Try and let me know.
oh nice they finally improved the export for recordings
I am running 22 cams
with only two tpu's?
Yep
The way the studs were laid out were going to make soldering a pipe joint there impossible, I would have been needing to make a connection in the middle of that block of studs
you prob don't get a lot of motion though right?
bleh. haha
may have to be a beefy card to support 22 cams lol
assuming the same card is doing all the decoding etc as well
All outdoor motion is on Frigate so I rely on it very much.
I don't care about people, just dog detection.
I've been able to get rid of most of my motion masks after moving to Frigate 0.13
the export and the min presence adjustment both sounds pretty nice. aside from that I don't see much new in terms of what I use
A coral can do like 100 detections a second and seems to do 4 or 5 every time it detects motion. You can configure a different stream for the displayed feed and the feed used for motion detection so you can set a slower framerate for detection too
surprised it took this long for the jetson nano to get supported
I think the 4 or 5 is dependant on detection feed resolution
how so?
tips ? Tricks?
that + a tuned Frigate+ model have significantly reduced any false negatives/positives
motion only matters if it results in an object detection
I used to go crazy with masks, but it was a cat and mouse game
you create that model yourself?
Took me some time but it's dialed in now on my setup. I almost never get a false detection.
no, I meticulously tagged almost 2000 images and used Frigate+ to generate a new model
wtf.. I didn't think he had added any of that stuff yet
I used to get false positives in a specfic area with chairs and landscape lighting and I haven't gotten one in a while
I also used to get false positives as the sun filtered through my pergola, but that was during certain times of the year. can't say if that's completely gone yet
I only have one camera that gives me false positives.. shadows + grill. ironic how many posts I've seen about grills being detected as something else lol
the latest base model includes all the false positive tags
Darn it. I shouldn't have opened a bottle of wine at 10AM. Too much to handle now LMAO
so hopefully that's helping
wtf.. AM.. dude.. atleast wait till PM ya drunk
Was celebrating.
next phase of my hosue work... ha. structure is all done, most of the drywall. kitchen installed. just mostly needs all the finish work
colonoscopy cleared with no scares?
That and closed on another 4-plex
4plex.. your realitor?
why you closing 4 plexes. we need to open them ๐
You know.....:-)
i should have known.. only those types do the shit you do lol
That hurts
Biggest thing that's helped my cameras is IR floodlights for nighttime.
I swear whatever motion detection Ubiquiti have included freaks out at its own sensor noise.
Nice bright picture, far fewer spurious alerts. Go figure
That's not a bad idea at all. But too much work.
$50 on Amazon, 30 minutes running cable
30 minutes is the problem ๐
Fair enough
Also despite the terrible name, this actually seems to be a decent product: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BWXGCJYK
I would do that in heartbeat if I was worried about humans
This looks too nice to live in ๐คฃ
This is the difference it makes. UniFi doorbell (non-pro), in-built IR LEDs vs floodlight on
Outstanding!
I can ask all my raccoon friends to stay away, if you can sort some custom raccoon emojis on the server...
So you won't have to worry about them
aren't you worried that the distortion will make raccoons look fatter than they really are?
I have a problem with the 6 strong family that takes over my driveway.
Only at the edges of the frame
I see no problem with that ๐คฃ
hard to tell if they're ready for harvesting
I do. Come home after dinner and I am idling until they decide to move. Not OK!!!!!
Ooof
I would enjoy watching them, but I know they are poor pets and too aggressive for their own good
But so cute
They are cute. So I don't mind. The 2 young ones got attitude
I think you need to provide som pictures tbh @tidal bronze
racoons are funny here. they attack your suff, and you run out to chase them and they look at you like "what?"
Next time for sure.
I was tagged in this earlier..
aw
Your car is bigger than them
You don't need to wait
lol
if it's not a speaker it isn't worth it amirite
mostly theres just rats here. and squirrels.
Lol, perfect time to get bitten, not good
Yes, sir!
yeah i leave them alone
I've spooked racoons walking out my front door a couple times
Not wanting to stir the pot with the IR light, I went for a colour night vision set of cameras, been more than happy with them (dahua full color 2).
Only using a few dim gu10s around the house and they perform very well
You need to knock
I haven't seen the fam recently. Hopefully the shit ton of Cayotes didn't get to them @last cedar
ahhh, cute raccoons chewing on romex...
romex is yummy with a bit of basil and parmesan
They stole it from the local meth head, and gave them rabies
Romex with finger juice?
this one is tingly...
Has anyone made some flow chart I can follow to decide on the method of accessing my home server remotely? I'm kind of overwhelmed with the choices + all the new terminology I'm having to learn.
This is what my setup is like if someone does want to make recommendations:
I have a Linux computer I'm treating as a dedicated server.
Each service I would want to access is its own docker container.
I bought a domain for only this with Cloudflare set up.
The only devices I'd access it from are my phone (Android), laptop (Mac OS), and Steam Deck (Linux)
Ideally, I'd like to access it using something like [thatdomain]/homeassistant, [thatdomain]/jellyfin, etc
The last point won't work for HA
the easiest way would be setting up a cf tunnel and some of their fw rules
Otherwise CF tunnels all the way
@static schooner what happened to go2rtc page?
alternatively you could port forward or utilize a self hosted vpn and some local dns hackery
or a combination of either, whatever you feel the most happy with
I don't use it, but I assume that it's still there
ok. That's probably the least important point anyway.
I'd probably only use this in cases where a 1 time setup is needed anyway
showing just the json data?
it mostly never is a one time setup
but there is fairly little youd actually need to ever touch
That sucks
I see now, not sure what's up with that
there's a 1.8.5 that some folks have been updating to for some reason
personally i run cf dns records through port forwarding against a local caddy proxy, which does the access management and reverse proxies the services id like to have accessible
such may or may not work depening on your available nat type, in some cases the cf tunnel is the only way to go but that doesnt change a whole lot necessarily
I'm just getting redirected to the home page when I try to hit my webrtc streams now
http://frigate:5000/live/webrtc/stream.html isn't working
With caddy is it possible to force a service through something like keycloak? I know in traefik you use forward auth
Oh, not sure if my internet situation would cause problems with any particular method.
There's just ethernet ports in my apartment connected to the internet. Whatever router or modem handles them isn't in my apartment.
I plugged my own router into it and set it up in router mode and connect everything to that.
personally i dont see why this wouldnt possible, it has auth forwarding as option
https://caddyserver.com/docs/caddyfile/directives/forward_auth
it likely is a bit different from how to set it up with traefik
So you don't have your own network you pay for? You just share someone else's network?
CF tunnels if you are not going to use file syncing that uploads more than 150mb like photo sync apps etc.. The universal answer would be reverse proxy (nginx proxy manager in my case) and CF
Ooh neat thanks!
Or just set up a VPN
If it's nated then only tailscale could be an option then
i got myself a small template for the basic configuration
https://github.com/Horstexplorer/Docker/blob/main/Caddy/Caddyfile
might need to extend that with the keycloak thing but so far i have no need for it
i just block external requests where they shouldnt happen
Could get a VM from some hosting company and VPN to that
I've done that before
@tidal bronzeso glad you brought up the broken frigate 13.1 update..i didn't like the go2rtc ui anyways lol
yea thanks for that
:P
I think it did stuff to my databases too so I can't revert without restoring backups
My network is isolated from other apartment's in the building. I pay for internet, but my apartment requires I buy it from them. It's just added to my rent.
Since there's no choices I could make, there isn't anywhere for me to really get info on the setup.
I've asked the front desk a few questions, but they can't answer anything beyond "how do I connect to the internet". I think some other company sets the system up, and the people who actually work here know nothing aout it
CF tunnels
Or move to a place that has real internet
Speaking of real internet I can get 8Gbps symmetric fiber here now
Ditching Comcast on Feb 24th, lol
can you send one of those gbps to me
I'm only going for the 3Gbps plan
@shy comet isn't it perfect weather for some IN-N-OUT?
$60/mo more for 8Gbps I can't really take advantage of seems kind of pointless
cant wait for them to put in fibre in <a couple years> so i could get the full 250mbps i pay for
tho in fairness the contract states its only 175
My internet is around 400mbps download/250mbps upload and has only had 1 outage in the past year. So it actually is pretty good quality.
It's just that the lack of info is annoying for cases like this
You don't need to think or worry just go with CF tunnels
I prefer my internet with its imaginary bytes
My internet with Comcast is 2400Mbps down/200Mbps up but it goes out all the time
my internet feels like 56k most of the time
My Comcast connection goes out to the point that I went and got a backup 5G connection
but does it do the cool beep boop brrrrrrp
ssssssssssssssssssssssss
i have to do that myself
sadness
canada internet is expesive and slow.
I'm hoping the fiber will be solid enough I can ditch the 5G connection too
I mean comcast is a provider this bad that we even know it from across the ocean
Is internet access still a thing?
internet on cds
When I was in college I felt that.
The internet in my dorm was around 50kbps download max. There were 500 people crammed into pretty small building, and the system was not built to handle that. (This was 2016 for reference)
aol
you wouldnt download an internet
In most areas Comcast doesn't go out 10 times a day for a minute or two every day for years on end
my current internet is 6.5mbit down cause they damaged the fibre and i call them to repair it and they never do. for like a year. this is what i get for $75 a month
sigh
I get euh
That's what I'm looking at moving to
I'm paying about 160/mo for 2400/200 from Comcast right now
price for life internet
the price is your life or the one of a loved one
1 gig here is like $400
I assume price for life is them banking on computers continuing to get faster and faster so the price keeps going down and down
Which seems likely at this point
I initially read that as "$100 a month for 3GB of network activity max" not "$100 a month for 3Gbps internet"
price for life means no how much better and how much cheaper it gets, they will still charge you the original prioce
thats better than before, but still horrible
I lived with my parents for a bit after school, who had internet through comcast, and it was really frustrating.
The speed was decent. But there was a 1.5TB download limit per month shared between 5 people. And 3 of them were in constant video calls for school and work.
limit on mine was 300gb
not sure what it is now
they claim unlimited, but thats never true
its kinda fun around here, you can use whatever you want but if you use over a tb a month you will be monitored
I think with comcast it was $5 per 50gb over that 1.5TB limit. So they don't throttle your speed, just charge you extra.
The first is similar to mine
You can get unlimited internet from comcast for like $20 more a month too
But the plan with true unlimited was only $15/month more and my parents refused to upgrade to that, even when I offered to pay them the $15/month.
I'd just cause an overage every month if I didn't have unlimited
I've been doing more than 1.5TB/mo some months for like 15 years now, lol
i dont use that much. youtube, and vpn to work is the big things.
remote machine
at 60hz
no, 48hz.
close enough
hungry
ha
Get you some fish
You're probably just on coax for a 50/50 plan
nah fibre
i have yet to get a month to use more than 5tb
I've done 31.7TB in the last year; 2.6TB/mo average.
but i still pay $100 for 20gb cause Bell needs their money
what are you downloading to hit 2tb
oh.. i did once do multi tb cause i had to send an entire unreal engine game across the vpn.
(i hated that project)
haha
this does not fix the issue. at least not for me
Problem you have here in NZ is the last-mile access is pretty great - nearly 90% coverage of the country with "gigabit" GPON (usual DL/UL about 900/400Mbps), and options for 2/4/8G - but since half the stuff you want isn't hosted/cached/mirrored in-country, latency is a massive throughput killer for everything else
I didn't see anything in the release notes or issues for go2rtc
me either
Live in a place where the most under unlimited they could get you with is fair use
Or basically are you maxing your connection constantly for a month
I forgot it had a UI
what are the odds only us 4 today experince this lol
in nz the internet is transported by sheep
same for me
plus games taking 100s of GB of space breaking with the suggested fix being "reinstall the game"
NZ and Australia should merge. We've got plenty of stuff in country
there is so many space for tux and raccoons
also me feeling obligated to seed any torrent I download until the end of time
my cousin married an aussie. it was a tense wedding reception
NZ is in our constitution as a possible state lol
like the french and france
Excellent. Mainland china and Taiwan then
crazy
if my connection was constant maxed id get 2tb
i guess i can see that
constant videos, games etc
I hit like 9TB once when I had a VPS backing up to my house that bugged out and kept sending a full image over and over
i dont play games
For the last month lol
Or 2.6TB used
january was digital detox? ^^
1.7tb is detox?
Are you guys really tracking your home usage?
Comcast tracks it for me
dont need to. the bell website will track it
huh
i just look at the total values from time to time
they didnt even bother calculating a gb value
Does it really matter?
Yea, this data is useless to me outside of comparing to other people on Discord
sometimes it does
ha
because they may monitor your usage more or less heavy
My ISP has it in their app
I check it for cases like this lol
If I was on a metered plan I'd care more
its less about changing it but being aware of that
Never knew or want to know.
Fair that's you
I like comparing lol
But if I was on a metered plan hitting 3.2TB would also cost over $300 in overages
ew
I wonder if there's a point where Comcast caps overage fees and decides you've paid for unlimited internet that month
Used the app more for troubleshooting cases than for checking data
And I've done troubleshooting like 4-5 times over the last 2 years (and most of that time was when I was tinkering with the setup and forced it to resync with the new router)
Even on phones we don't use WIFI and never check that even.
Tracking, no. But I have SNMP monitoring on my router so I can just look at the total bytes.
I haven't tracked data usage on my phone in years
I only ever hit the data limit on my phone like once when I had a limit
at work we used to monitor cause we could see who was downloading stuff and not actually working
haha
Ive never hit my phones data limit in the last 5 years or so
180gb currently I never come close
We monitored our fileshares for movies and videos
5G UC is faster than wifi anyways at my place. So why bother tracking anything.
because we can ^^
why bother doing anything?
Statistics are fun
its fun
Yes sir, other than wine
whine
You get over 600mbps on 5G?
Indoors that's not bad for the UW version
The 5G modem I have from Verizon works as a 5G repeater too which is nice
superior 4g here
In the bathroom
no 5g here
That's slower than wifi for me (mainly upload, download about the same) but neat
Haven't turned on WiFi in ages
This 5G modem has a larger antenna than my phone does and can rebroadcast the 5G signal over 5GUW
Whilst I don't care about needing a mobile data extender. Just give me wifi and I'll use wifi calling (like what I have to do in the office lol)
Why pay for it then. Seems a waste
you remotely connect to shit using your phone inside your own home? lol
50 or 60 people on plex mostly from Australia and UK so gotta keep it going.
Still increased my 5G signal speed by like 2x indoors.
Which I'm not going to scoff at
Then why not use it. Seems kinda pointless
Split DNS WG is always on anyways
^ I don't really pay any attention to if my phone is on wifi or not
Ive got gigabit internet, I don't need 5G indoors. Or any phone reception indoors really
hard pass
I leave wifi on, let it connect when needed
WiFi is only for in-flight
