Mine is wired to the output

#

So it's literally just power cycling it

#

I was gonna use a cloud integration to check if the button was pressed

#

But that method of yours sounds more stable

prisma briar
#

The zbmini just rectifies the power to DC and steps it down to like 3V to run it, I found the units themselves work fine off of 12V DC if you want 12V on the output line. I have mine on a 12v power supply and when load out turns on from the doorbell being pressed it flips a contactor that rings my doorbell chime.

dawn moth
#

Smart

prisma briar
#

It also gives me an HA notification I can automate off of

dawn moth
#

Mine is powered via a transformer pushing 24v AC

prisma briar
#

My doorbell is 24V AC but when the solenoid fires it shorts it and drops voltage down to near 0v which was causing the zbmini's to hang, hence the 12v power supply and contactor

dawn moth
#

Makes sense

#

I haven't noticed that with mine

gleaming crater
#

Or have it built in

dawn moth
#

I'm just using the regular chime that wyze provides

prisma briar
#

I have a stupid doorbell just wired to S1/S2 on a zbmini

dawn moth
#

Ah

prisma briar
#

I have a camera out there that does two way audio too so I don't need a doorbell camera

gleaming crater
#

I ended up branching my transformer and firing it with an esp8266 when I get doorbell events

prisma briar
#

I basically just use a zbmini instead of an esp to fire mine.

dawn moth
#

I feel like there's a way to implement that for me but

gleaming crater
#

I programmed in multiple chime patterns into mine with esphome so I could have a virtual front and back door ring

dawn moth
#

Could just go get that community made integration 🤭

prisma briar
#

I would call the cops if someone started knocking on my back door

#

And wonder how they got over a 15' fence

#

My house is on a hill and right behind my backyard fence is basically a 10 ft vertical drop, lol.

gleaming crater
#

My wife runs a salon with an entrance on the side of the house from the front door

#

I had to put a doorbell out there for her lol

prisma briar
#

At least HA/smart homes make adding doorbells really easy

gleaming crater
#

Ish

#

Talking 2 way is a special kind of hell

#

The number of people that go down that whole road and then get mad they need working ssl lol

prisma briar
#

Just stick a polycom intercom on your door and make the doorbell call it and your cell phone

#

One of these things

gleaming crater
#

Somewhere there is a mountain of those in a landfill

prisma briar
#

I had an elaborate plan to do something like that when I moved in then I realized nobody ever comes to my door except to deliver things

#

I had everything set up except buying the actual polycom too

#

I still maintain an asterisk server to call out if an alarm gets triggered

dawn moth
#

I found this

#

What's your fellas thoughts

prisma briar
#

The first thing that comes to mind is if you reuse a neutral wire as a high voltage traveler you need to tape the ends of it red to reidentify it as a hot wire.

dawn moth
#

I thought it was gonna be a passive traveler?

#

This was with the switches

#

Couldn't I take the one neutral and move it to the switch upstairs, and then to the switch downstairs to complete the circuit

#

Since atm there's only one travel wire

prisma briar
#

I don't have a clear enough idea of your wiring to offer anything helpful.

gleaming crater
#

Yeah stick to raccoons plz

#

lol

static schooner
#

Raccoon support is terrible

forest edge
#

@tidal bronze this your place?

tidal bronze

Lol no. Didn't turn on a single light this time.

prisma briar

Hidden feature of American dryers: Pop the exhaust vent out of the wall and run it empty for an hour, easy 5kw space heater.

solar zealot
#

i still cant wrap my mind around this

#

hm yes, this produces an enormous amount of heat... lets... vent it to the outside

primal laurel
#

I don't even own a dryer

prisma briar
#

ikr

solar zealot
#

also americans: lets cool this air from the outside down so we can heat it up with a dryer

gleaming crater
prisma briar
#

I've been trying to come up with a cheap solution to capture the heat from my dryer while still venting the moisture

solar zealot
#

by buying a more efficient dryer

prisma briar
#

A DIY condensor or something

gleaming crater
#

Heat pump dryer?

prisma briar
#

cheap

#

My dryer is in my garage so it's not like capturing the heat off of it is going to do me a ton of good

#

Not worth buying a new appliance for

solar zealot
#

with the magic of heat pumps

prisma briar
#

Didn't we go over how heat pump dryers don't work in cold rooms yesterday?

solar zealot
#

i mean, how cold is cold

prisma briar
#

Or was that someone else I was talking to

solar zealot
#

probably not me

prisma briar
#

I keep my garage set to 7C

solar zealot
#

thats one way of not having to iron cloths ;D

#

that could get more difficult

#

the measurements above are ~21c

prisma briar
#

From what I was reading they just don't get hot enough to be effective at low temperatures

solar zealot
#

7+c might work just fine for larger ones, but no idea about how those small ones would handle

#

id guess it still would work, in the end the dryers are rated for 1.2ish kw

prisma briar
#

Mine's rated for 5.6kw, lol.

solar zealot
#

which should be enough heat for what volume they have

#

the non heatpump one we had before did around 2kw

prisma briar
#

They make smaller ones I could have got. Mine is 7.4ft^3/ .2m^3

solar zealot
#

6 is just madness. probably this is a special setting after "extra dry" "desert dry" and "surface of the sun"

prisma briar
#

I can get mine to do lower power too, it's got a few different eco modes and load sensors

#

I could just adjust the temperature of it too, I do for some blankets I have that high heat would destroy.

solar zealot
#

If your garage is usually this cold, why not vent it directly into it

prisma briar
#

Too much moisture

#

I tried that, literally had water running down the walls

solar zealot
#

Oh I see, it doesn't pull out the water hm

#

That's no bueno then

prisma briar
#

I was thinking I may be able to do something like get 20m of exhaust hose and coil it up and blow a fan over it to condense it in one spot and keep it from going everywhere

#

But then I have a bunch of water I need to do something with

prisma briar
#

I was thinking a drain pump meant for an indoor air conditioner head

#

idk. This seems like a lot of work to recover waste energy from an appliance that runs for maybe 8h a week.

#

lol, not even 8h

#

Hmm. If I exhaust it through a barrel of water the water should cool the air on the way out and remove all it's moisture, then the barrel would radiate it off over time.

#

But then I'm keeping a barrel of water in my garage

primal laurel
#

Including heating my parents house is doing about 160kWh per week, I'm on natural gas

prisma briar
#

I've done 160kWh in the last two days

#

lol

#

Currently at 210kWh between yesterday and so far today

#

But 2/3 of that is stupid fishtanks

#

I just had to put a bunch more heaters out there because the fishtanks were still getting too cold so I'm burning 8kw right now to heat those stupid things

#

My friend finally agreed to fix the insulation problem with them so hopefully we won't have to keep doing this going forward

static schooner
#

Sous vide

prisma briar
# static schooner Sous vide

I wish. He's got 2k of heaters in the tanks, I just rotated my 5kw garage space heater to blow out there, and he's got a propane space heater running out there too.

#

I really wish he would have listened to me and taken care of this insulation problem months ago, not now that it's -23c out

tidal bronze
#

Heated seat as well?

static schooner
#

Yep

tidal bronze
#

Nice.

tidal bronze
#

I am going to throw this damn govee corner lights. What a pain to convert to WLED

forest edge
tidal bronze
#

Got a bunch on BF to add to ledfx. This ain't working.

#

Backto aliexpress and do my own DIY solution

gleaming crater
#

Govee is some peak chinesium brand

prisma briar
#

an esp32 + argb strip of leds + power supply is cheap and easy.

gleaming crater
#

LedFx has some really slick led matrix effects now too

prisma briar
#

And a broom stick and weight to hold it up to make one of those corner lights are also cheap

tidal bronze
#

Been running ledfx forever. I use WLED for ledfx.

gleaming crater
#

I submitted a PR to add LIFX support but I need to do some refactoring first

prisma briar
#

Hmm, I kind of like the idea of these corner lights actually. I might try making something like this myself.

tidal bronze
#

The corner lights would make some badass VU meters, at least that was the plan. Now back to frames from China and DIY

prisma briar
#

If I DIY one I'll probably just get a black iron pipe and stick an LED strip to one side of it.

gleaming crater
#

Yeah they have a 2d VU meter if you get a matrix array

prisma briar
#

oshit

#

I should put rgb strips on the back of my tower speakers

tidal bronze
#

No need to make stuff anymore. Waste of time.

prisma briar
#

Yea, I couldn't make it that cheap

#

I could beat $80 but not $15

tidal bronze
#

Govee comes with 24V RGB+CCT, 4 led segments. What a shit show. Wish I knew.

#

Bad for ledfx

gleaming crater
#

Yeah it makes chunky effects

#

LIFX has 6 led zones and basically a centered blade power was the only decent effect

tidal bronze
#

I think I drive about 1200 leds on ledfx throughout lower level. Best thing ever.

umbral cliff
gleaming crater
#

Yeah they just added animated gif to the beat support

tidal bronze
#

That's the only way I can have any kind of color in the house. Wife is cool with all my craziness but colors without music, hell no LMAO

gleaming crater
#

My lights are normally just for color temp

#

The lights to the beat are just parties mostly lol

tidal bronze
#

Same here. The entire backyard, all palm trees are VU meteres Lol

#

Running spectrum on all trees

prisma briar
#

Every once in a while I'll set all my indoor lights to some random color but I hardly ever actually use the color feature of my color bulbs

#

I change color temp all the time though

DDP made things so much easier

I had fun with my kitchen counters, I had 3 blade power+ configured to hi/mid/low for a spread out vu meter

I think early 2000s it became mandatory to have them for the whole house here, but our place is early 90s

solar zealot
#

Never a bad investment to post add such gear

prisma briar
#

If I was reading it right

#

Which is why the ones that go in your main breaker box aren't in stock anywhere anymore

solar zealot
#

do houses come with multiple panels standard over there?

prisma briar
#

Not normally, but GFCI breakers are also not the standard here.

#

We implement GFCI in our outlets, all subsequent outlets chained off of a GFCI one are protected by that one

solar zealot
#

I see, because you mentioned sub panels as main installation point

#

Which got me a bit confused

prisma briar
#

Yea, if you want a GFCI breaker and don't have a subpanel you have to have a subpanel installed too now

solar zealot
#

Oh

#

That's horrific

prisma briar
#

I have zero understanding of the reason behind that change

#

But I saw people talking about it and from what I could tell it was a thing

solar zealot
#

Might force people not just to wire it in but to wire it in properly

#

But that doesn't make a lot of sense

prisma briar
#

I wanted to put my dryer on a GFCI breaker but I couldn't find any that fit my main panel because they were all discontinued a couple years ago

solar zealot
#

Big panel does not want people to know

prisma briar
#

Which led me down that rabbit hole

last cedar
#

Or doesn't!

solar zealot
#

Din rails but the faces aren't standard

#

Looking at shelly

glacial knot
#

They should just standardize on smiley for face

solar zealot
#

If they could agree on a charset

last cedar
#

I have so far just put standard Schneider stuff in mine, it all fits nicely

solar zealot
#

Cutting out a round hole on a square box

#

It also isn't exactly 2 units wide

ocean oar
#

Also what is this screws on the side nonsense?

solar zealot
#

That's where you plug in the wires

#

And screw them on

ocean oar
#

More, aren't they meant to be on the accessible side of the device? So you take the faceplate off the board and can see all the fasteners

solar zealot
#

Yes but this would make it unnecessarily wide

#

Could get more difficult when trying to post install it somewhere

ocean oar
#

I mean it doesn't have to. Plenty of devices have "tiers" of contacts like this:

prisma briar
#

This is a double pull breaker here

static schooner
#

Is that really the same thing? The point of that one is to cover both sides of the split phase

#

I don't know what the wedding cake thing accomplishes

prisma briar
#

Pissing off whoever comes to do wiring next?

#

We also have the half width ones that add two circuits to one slot

#

For some reason all of my breakers are double-pull breakers like the first I linked, even ones that I'm 99% sure are just two separate 120v circuits

static schooner
#

I was looking at my breaker box to see how I can install my IotaWatt and it's friggin' packed

#

no circuits left, lots of small breakers

#

small panel, outside my garage

prisma briar
#

My breaker box looks like hell after installing my Vue

#

Can't see the breaker box through all the clamp wires

static schooner
#

I'm going to have to punch a whole into the back to get power to the IotaWatt, or to pull the clamp wires through

#

it's quite a rat's nest

glacial knot
#

Is your breaker box not in a fire resistant box? 🤔

prisma briar
#

I spliced into two existing circuits (it wants to monitor each phase) with a wire nut to power my Vue

static schooner
#

This is the bottom of the box and I think I can punch through that bigger punchout to the right:

#

the one on the left is what my solar installer made, but I don't think it's big enough to push more wires through

prisma briar
#

That's what mine looks like with the Vue in it

tidal bronze
#

+1 for Vue

static schooner
#

see, I look at that picture and think "look at all the space you have!"

tidal bronze
#

I was about to say lol

gleaming crater
#

Did yall kill your main power when you installed that?

prisma briar
#

No

tidal bronze
#

I gotta rip all the Tesla CT's out. What a load of BS that is.

prisma briar
#

I killed the two breakers I spliced into for power connections and that was it

gleaming crater
#

The guy that did my hot tub wired up the whole line and breaker without shutting off the mains lol

prisma briar
#

Only time I've killed the main breaker is when replacing a sub-breaker

tidal bronze
#

Why would you turn off the breakers?

prisma briar
#

Yea, even then I could have not killed the power when putting in the sub breaker

gleaming crater
#

Something about “this will hurt the whole time you are dying” level of current in that box

tidal bronze
#

lol

prisma briar
#

Well you can't turn off the top two lugs anyways

#

So just don't touch anything stupid

tidal bronze
#

Touch but verify

prisma briar
#

Yea, I'm pretty judicious with my test probes when doing electrical work

tidal bronze
#

Finally!!! This took sometime. 😆

gleaming crater

Nice

tidal bronze
#

6 more to go

gleaming crater
#

Do you use the LedFx integration? I had to find a fork that actually worked

tidal bronze
#

That went south sometime ago. Not anymore. Call scenes depending on if LEDFX CCA is playing

gleaming crater
tidal bronze
#

Chrome Cast Audio is in certain groups. Depending on which areas I am playing, invoke scenes accordingly.

gleaming crater
#

The parent branch maintainer went mia on that integration

tidal bronze
#

Yes. Thanks let me check it out. I use rest.

gleaming crater
#

Yeah this lets you control basically everything

tidal bronze
#

Same as before I guess. I didn't use the old one that much as well. Ledfx scenes are CCA groups/devices dependent.

#

I wish they improve scene editing on ledfx sometime soon.

gleaming crater
#

They did find some bugs recently related to it

tidal bronze
#

Adding devices to existing scenes.....lmao

gleaming crater
#

It’s easier to activate a scene and then create a new one from that state lol

tidal bronze
#

That's what I do.

gleaming crater
#

They code a terrifying amount of that app with help from ChatGPT

#

None of the regular devs for it are even programmers for a living lol

tidal bronze
#

For me what a perfect app. Simply love it.

gleaming crater
#

If you have wled it rocks

tidal bronze
#

New ones supports audio delay. I wish there is a way to adjust device delay. Used to work just fine with E1.31

gleaming crater
#

I am feeding mine with Snapcast, I can set a delay on that device and it gives data to LedFx earlier

tidal bronze
#

CCA + ledfx does the same but that's not enough for me. Backyard edges need more delay so need some way of adjusting device delay

gleaming crater
#

Just run another instance of LedFx lol

tidal bronze
#

Been thinking about that. Split audio and use ledfx USB Audio delay.

gleaming crater
#

Or just shove the code into gpt4 and ask it to code that feature, they’ll accept the PR lol

primal laurel

have you seen the domoticz codebase? Try there, they will accept anything lol

The meme you've provided is known as the "It's Free Real Estate" meme. It features a man with a smug expression, whispering to the camera, which comes from a sketch from "Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job!" The phrase "It's Free Real Estate" is superimposed at the bottom. The humor in this meme comes from its use as a reaction image to situations where something is being offered at no cost or with little to no catch, suggesting that it's an opportunity not to be missed. The phrase has been widely adopted on the internet to humorously convey that something is being presented as a "steal," or a great deal. The smug expression of the man adds to the comedic effect, implying a secretive or inside-joke quality to the opportunity at hand.

Anything sold in Australia has to be fully sealed in plastic and only opened by scissors. Which can be a pain

I keep thinking that I'll be able to push them through, but it just doesn't work

gleaming crater
#

That's cuz name brands don't like getting sued, it's only sketchy when its the noname cheap crap

Yeah the new kind seems to be heat-sealed shut around the circumference of the battery, and then glued onto the cardboard backing

#

So you have to rip it off, then trim around the edge to free the battery

I don't use a lot of them, just some Tile trackers and my car alarm remote. Remember them being an arse to get into though

gleaming crater

Yeah the brands here are all that way in stores

I'm also surprised they've not done anything to mandate child-proof packaging for dishwasher detergent packs.

forest edge

static schooner
#

Only a bidet

#

Priorities

tidal bronze
#

TVs and Speakers only. Everything else is on racks in the garage.

forest edge
#

sounds nuts

#

not much of a home if you don't fill it with stuff

tidal bronze
#

Oh no. Wife's into minimalist look. I kinda like it too. When shit happens in the background it's even better

tidal bronze
#

Yes exactly that lol.

forest edge
#

fuck that lol

#

if your not tripping over shit, your not living

tidal bronze
#

The damn echo in the house sometimes gets to me.

forest edge
#

i bet

#

fart and people across the house hear it

tidal bronze
#

Now the bar is too crowded. Gotta redeisgn that shit.

forest edge
#

no people allowed either.. too much clutter

#

gotta face time to hang with friends

static schooner
#

seems like maybe you're a spy and may need to leave the country at a moment's notice

tidal bronze
#

That's what friends say.

static schooner
#

or make it look like you've already left

tidal bronze
#

Friends always ask about pictures..... LMAO

forest edge
#

tidal bronze
#

Sorry, it is what it is. lol

forest edge
#

serial killers in movies are often very neat and live in empty homes..

#

static schooner
#

red rock
gleaming crater
#

I’m just the guy who runs IT, I try not to code for a living haha

#

I swear tho I’ve read just about all the science fiction worth reading at this point

young sigil
#

The Skinner by Neal Asher?

gleaming crater
#

I’ll give it a look

clever mortar
#

Asher's stuff is good

#

So is Banks

young sigil
#

Oh Man. You have a whole (Polity) Universe waiting. He is definitely up there with IMB.

gleaming crater
#

I’ve read pretty much all Ian banks

young sigil
#

I'm kinda pissed that Mr Banks died. I had to read a few of his non scifi works. They were... strange.

gleaming crater
#

The last author I really enjoyed finding was Greg Egan

#

Super hard sci-fi but fascinating stuff

#

Quarantine is a great one of his

young sigil
#

Ooh. Haven't read any of that. I'll check it out. Thanks.

gleaming crater
#

Schilds ladder is stuck in my brain too

clever mortar
#

if you want something lighter then Glynn Stewart, Evan Currie, Eric Thompson, and Joel Shepherd are worth a look

#

Oh, and Blaze Ward, as well as Terry Mixon

gleaming crater
#

I’ll have to add em to my Goodreads shelf

#

Oh for fucks sake

young sigil
#

I've just finished A. A. Attanasio's Radix Tetrad. That guy is on some good drugs.

gleaming crater
#

Damnit now how am I gonna make coffee

red rock
#

gleaming crater
#

Let’s see how quick Amazon can get one here lol

red rock
#

I mean, I have a low expectation of companies delivering glass items

young sigil
gleaming crater
#

I read his commonwealth series

clever mortar
#

Jonathan E. Hernandez's Gordian Knot series is good too. At least the first two books are, haven't started number three

young sigil
gleaming crater
#

I wish there were more bobiverse and murderbot books I haven’t read, those are a good series

#

Tho the last two for both were a little weak

clever mortar
#

Ah... you like those do you... let me dig out some other suggestions then

gleaming crater
#

Eh they’re quick

clever mortar
#

Yeah, I mix my deeper reading with light and quick

gleaming crater
#

That’s like Greg Egan, inventing life with new kinds of rules of physics, I need a light palette cleanser after

clever mortar
#

Not SciFi, but lighthearted and bounces along are most things by Orlando Sanchez

#

Michael Anderle is hit and miss, but some stuff is fun and light, though some ... yeah, let's not go there

#

Joshua Dalzelle is another I'd put on the quIcker end of the scale

gleaming crater
#

I know who to annyoy if I ever run out of books to read again lol you have a laundry list

clever mortar
#

And if you like SciFi mixed with DnD try this

gleaming crater
#

"Tolkien meets Shock and Awe" lol

clever mortar
#

Oh yeah, reading is my other hobby, and I read a lot

gleaming crater
#

I go in spurts where I'll read 5 books a week and then have to take a break to be more productive

clever mortar
#

SciFi, fantasy, horror, thriller, and most things in between

gleaming crater
#

Sometimes I'll hit a book so bad I have to just stop reading for a few days lol

#

Oh yeah Blake Crouch has some great stuff if you want scifi thriller type

#

Recursion and Upgrade were pretty good

clever mortar
#

Cool, I'll add those to my list

gleaming crater
#

He was the dude that wrote Wayward Pines that got turned into a show (book was much much better)

#

Dark Matter was prob my fav of his tho

#

Anways thanks for the recs all, I should have plenty in the backlog now haha

#

orders a new coffee pot

#

Damnit this is like the third pour over I've broken according to my amazon history... I think I have a problem

red rock
#

how did you even do that in the first place

gleaming crater
#

This time I managed to bump it with my hand reaching for something else and it fell over and hit the metal edge lip of my stove

#

Even tho this is borosilicate glass, I think with multiple years of heat cycling they don't tolerate being knocked over lol

gleaming crater
#

Lol my wife came down and saw me shopping for a coffee pot and was like "how many of these have you gone thru now already??"

#

I was like... uhh... a number?

clear ferry
#
