I remember when I came bck from my trip to Italy I was super grateful for soda fountains and refills ๐
That's what happens when you go to tourist traps, you get scammed
Aka most inner city Italian areas
NL is okay as long as you don't go to amsterdam
You don't even allow tourist marihuana cafรฉs anymore
No need to go to Amsterdam
I do like Schiphol though
Gotta buy stroopwaffles when flying international
these are comign to cali
The US, war on drugs, but commercialising marihuana, more on news at nine
That started with nonsense from Nixon and everyone's afraid to fix it
California also trying to lead on that
Nixon had some weird ideas about what 'the kids' were doing
yea 100mg is a joke, although you can find some places taht have protabs taht usually ahve 250-300mg per box
i will say though that you no longer get duds due to the new regulations so tahts a big positive
They write something like 250 on the packages but you donโt know if its per gummy or the whole thing. it was so much I couldnโt get the oily stuff from my teeth, so I reckon it was per gummy
thats the other nice thing about legalization its all documented and tested properly
many people think weed is legal in NL, it's not
--atx
I just noticed that I over contributed to my HSA last year and to pull the excess out I have to print out a form and fax it to the plan administrator. Welcome to 2023, folks
Luckily, we're moving away from these Neanderthals to some other provider
and the form is literally: name, account #, company, phone number, and a checkbox to refund the excess
it's quite possibly the dumbest thing I've had to do
they already have all the information in the header from my account, of course
they coulda even provided a pre-filled version, but not even that
We have two multifunction printer/scanner things on my floor and I was concerned that I didn't see "fax" as an option in the first one. Luckily, the second one saved the day
im from the 90's, I have never seen a fax machine in my life
I'm from...before that...but there aren't many dedicated fax machines anymore. It's basically an app on a printer
"print" is also an app ๐
I remember fax, had to do it in 2007 because my company is American, first time since 2003 I did it and haven't done it since, America, the least technologically advanced country strikes again
you missed the "--atx"
Yes, you enabled the ATX flag, you need to do --noatx
To be fair, we know that Bank of America / Merrill are terrible lol
It felt like the 90s
this is Optum, which handles the HSA for both my previous and current employer
What a strange concept HSA is, I've never heard of this before, had to Google
it's basically Yet Another Pretax Investment Account for me. max it out and move on
Yeah, I wouldn't need one of those since everything is covered already, as long as I pay the maximum fee of $200 a year in consultation and medication that is
Sounds similar to what kids can do to save up to a house here, just for future medical stuff
doesn't have to be medical stuff. It becomes general retirement funds
Interesting
We have three ways to save retirement
One part comes from state as long as we earn money state puts a fixed amount from taxes to retirement
One part comes from employer, they do up to 7% of your salary (on top of your salary) to retirement
One part is what we want to invest ourselves, which is voluntary and not capped
All three go into a government account that is locked away until you retire
that's not too dissimilar from the US, in that "locked away" means you pay a 10% penalty to withdraw
Oh no penalties, you just can't take money from it until you are 62 or medically retired
my point is that we can, it just costs a penalty
the second one, at least
the first one starts at retirement (or 62.5, I think) and the third is a free-for-all
I am absolutely in love with this thing!
Das ist ein prusa ja
I sold my prusa, and I regret it
Getting a not shit 3D printer let me enjoy 3D printing again
I gave up on using my Ender 3 for anything more than basic shapes
I love my ender 3
Took some tweaking but I knew that
My new printer is about 10x as fast and gives better quality prints than my Ender 3 does. The convenience that that speed gives is so nice.
The printer itself was $699, but I got a combo that came with a filament switcher for $950.
I have about $600 in my Ender 3 right now, mostly because I got mine for $300 right after they launched and have since replaced most of it.
I have dual z axis motors on mine, replaced the mobo and screen, replaced the psu, replaced the bed, replaced a motor that was missing steps, converted it to direct drive, replaced the springs holding the bed with stiffer ones, added an esp3d to it for network control, redid all the wiring, replaced all the fans, replaced the hotend
I'm down to just the frame and a couple motors of the original ender 3 left
That's a lot
I added a webcam, octoprint, led bar, glass bed and auto leveler
Oh yea, I added an auto leveler probe, too. I have a webcam for mine too but I use it for other things too so didn't think about it.
And I have a greenhouse enclosure for it with an RGBWW LED strip ran around the inside on a Zigbee module
I have an HA automation that turns the lights on and off with the ping status of the esp3d module I put on it
The RGBWW lights were overkill but I had like 5 feet left over from another project
Mine is addressable so I can do some cool effects based on the state of the printer
Also added a power meter plug
And an automation that sends a push notification to my phone with a button that can then turn everything off
I just got my first strand of argb leds, I set them up with WLED. I'm making some light-up numbers to put on the front of my house.
i love how goofy the flow chart for one of my automations looks
Is that Pachinko?
Apollo 6500 G10+ ?
omgomgomg is that OLCF-6 2-4EF ?
Yes
Having fun with their wacky power connectors?
Was the only thing I remember about that machine when we talked to HPE about them. Took one look at those sockets and just thought "dafuq is this?"
Is this SLI?
No wait, this is way too big to be a SLI connector
What is it
Four A100/H100 class GPUs on Nvidia's "Redstone" carrier, in an HPE chassis.
Judging by it being the 4-GPU and not the 8-GPU, the XL645d motherboard, so there are two complete systems (2 CPU / 4 GPU each) in that chassis
https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/data-center/hgx/
https://buy.hpe.com/nz/en/compute/apollo-systems/apollo-6500-system/apollo-6500-system/hpe-apollo-6500-gen10-plus-system/p/1013092236
Looked at these a few years ago at work. We ended up needing GPUs that could handle a mixed compute/render workload (so the A40 rather than A100) but they do look fun
That's awesome
Fairly good way to use approximately 1kW per rack unit
Think they calculated it at 6.2kW each when we were looking
The fax is probably one of the most secure ways to transmit data/information these days. Call me crazy but I wish it would come back.
And waste paper every time you try to send something, no thanks
On a machine with moving parts that will likely break often๐
It's less secure than the internet
Since it travels over said internet o.0
Hey, its Prime Day and I need window and door sensors, having 0 so far^^ Was waiting for the Aquara P2 to get cheaper, because, well... Matter and new generation...
But does it make a difference? The old ones are even smaller...
And just the old ones are cheaper today: 13 โฌ vs. 33 โฌ... Thats a big deal for a whole house... Any experience on these both? ^^
But you can't piss people off by taping a loop of completely black paper and sending it as a fax
Email is too boring
this is why we cant have nice things
I built some of those recently - just have to sort out the wiring etc and mount them now, using a Dig Quad to make it all work.
HA logo predictions
They have 6x3000w PSUs per 2 nodes
Those must be the small ones ๐คฃ
That's what they said
are they newer?
Yes
ok new life goal then
Life goal will always shift
I got a Kia EV6 rental today, it was more comfy than I expected
dont even have a car
I have two currently
I had four at one point
Audi A8L
VW Golf 3
VW Golf 4
VW Tiguan
Now I have Volvo XC90 and Nissan Leaf
If I were to replace the XC90 the two real alternatives would be EX90 and Hongqi E-HS9
I've had a fiat panda and peugeot 205 ๐คฃ
That looks like what happens when a wagon and a suv have a very ugly baby
Alos why the heck do you want a 7 seat car
And very roomy
You have like 1 kid
Try having kids
nah, it was in faithful family service for many years
Don't need the baby carriage anymore, but still need room for two child seats and maybe one extra passenger
And 7 seater will be handy when the eldest starts school and you end up going places with multiple kids
I plan to manage in a sedan lol
Boot is large enough for multiple bags
Or more kids
The boot of the A8L could fit at least 7 dead hookers without dismemberment
It was enormous

ssh_dispatch_run_fatal: Connection to 10.32.12.1 port 22: error in libcrypto
thanks
really helpful
I think you need to check in libcrypto
Nah, everybody knows that means it's time to power cycle the house country
Cryptography is magic, anyway. It's unknowable.
I've now penetrated libcrypto, I found nothing, but there was a lot of moaning and screaming
But it says the error is there
If I try to ssh normally I get Unable to negotiate with 10.32.10.1 port 22: no matching host key type found. Their offer: ssh-rsa,ssh-dssbut as soon as I add -o HostKeyAlgorithm=+ssh-rsa it just goes with error in libcrypto
and nothing fun appears in -vvvv
Then maybe its not ssh after all responding

This is #the-water-cooler but not #boomersticker

hello why cant I use custom emoji

I want that emoji.

So, if you see this
RHEL9 and newer do stricter crypto policies
need to do update-crypto-policies --set DEFAULT:SHA1 if you want to connect to anything that isn't brand spanking new
I was so happy to use the PM10, PM2.5, O3 and NO2 attributes from the WAQI sensor - just to realize they are AQI indexes too and not ยตg/mยณ.
Got these rc snubbers to wire in parallel with fans I'm controlling via smart switches, how do I determine the polarity here? Which wire needs to be wired with line and which wire needs to be wired with neutral?
found out elsewhere, polarity does not matter with these
does polarity even matter with these?
There is no support in this channel. Try #diy-archived but if you have to ask you should hire an electrician.
okay i asked here because it wasn't directly related to HA
In that case you shouldn't be asking on this server.
ok
Most people anywhere are going to be reluctant to answer simple and easy to research questions like that when the result of a failed install can be fire or death.
To phrase it differently, if you have to ask about that you're already in over your head. Go find a professional.
that's one of the most condescending answers i've ever gotten to what seems like a basic question lol
i've been searching in regards to the polarity of these rc snubbers but i can't find any kind of datasheet or anything
which is why i figured i might as well post somewhere where it's likely someone else has used similar devices in a similar way to see
I don't really care if you find me condescending. What you're doing is dangerous with the level of expertise you are demonstrating.
i haven't demonstrated any level of expertise. i've asked a question. you're acting as if i posted a picture of myself sticking live and neutral in the same wago wondering why the breaker trips when i turn it on
what exactly about adding this in parallel is so much more dangerous than other diy projects i've done fine and without issue like shelly and smart switch installations
No, I'm acting like you're holding the live and neutral wires and asking which one to put into which side of the outlet. Because that's essentially what you're doing.
would you care to explain what exactly is so hazardous and deadly about what i'm asking or are you just gonna keep being a condescending asshole
Your basic questions indicate a general lack of awareness or familiarity with voltages and configurations that can easily kill you or a loved one.
If someone popped on here asking how to jack their car up to drop a transmission I'd respond in the same manner. Go find a professional.
would you care to explain anything about what specifically is so dangerous? you just keep saying "i think the question you're asking is stupid therefore you're stupid and it's not worth giving you any time, despite the fact that i'll spend my time further elaborating on how stupid i think you are"
Go shove a fork in an outlet if you want to see what's dangerous.
someone needs to get better at using Cunningham's Law ๐
i'll take that as a no, then
You're not doing yourself any favors by continuing
ok
if it's such a basic question you could have easily just gave an answer and a warning, but you chose to be a condescending asshole instead
I did give a warning, I warned you against messing with high voltages when you have no idea what you're doing and can't find an answer to such a simple question for yourself. You're a giant red flag, man.
I just don't want you to end up as a statistic.
oh right, you're being an asshole because you care about me
no, you're being an asshole because you want to be
i'm not gonna sit here and list off the diy projects i've already done safely just so you can feel better about answering the question
if you want to answer it, go ahead. if you don't, don't.
there's no need to be an asshole about it
Do you hear that? That's the sound of everything I've said going over your head.
you've said nothing but "i think you're stupid and i'm not telling you any more"
Yup. Maybe you should think about that for a bit.
maybe you should just stop being such a condescending asshole for no reason
it's not hard dude
You're asking how to do dangerous things but in such an amateur manner that people are afraid to help you.
i'm making sure i know what i'm doing before i attempt to do it
is that really such a bad thing?
good lord dude
You're asking a really stupid question
if it's so fucking stupid just answer it
You're asking a really stupid question that anyone with even the most basic familiarity with A/C power should know the answer to.
Which makes me wonder what else you don't know, like safety requirements
Which, coupled with your attitude of 'I know how to do it, I'm great' leads me to be concerned you're going to kill someone
i'm not saying "i know how to do it" i'm asking a fucking question so i can figure out how to do it
you fucking prick
As I said, you're a giant red flag.
You have to be entirely unfamiliar with one of the most critical and dangerous properties of A/C power to not already know the answer to your question.
if you don't wanna answer my question just don't
like i said before, there's no reason to be a condescending asshole about it
if you're so concerned about my safety, explain what exactly it is you think i'm gonna do wrong
but its fun. And mods get mad if we try to convince people to put live wire were the sun never shines D:
Not understand A/C polarity?
but you're not actually concerned about my safety
you just wanna be an asshole for the sake of it
You're refusing to listen to what I'm saying because you think it's a blow to your ego.
Get over yourself.
you're refusing to what i'm saying
i'm not asking questions because i think i'm some hot shot who can't do anything wrong
i'm asking questions because i want to make sure i know what i'm doing before i do it
if i was the person you're trying to imply that i am i would have already gone and tried it and gottem myself killed already
Just for fun I checked how long it would take me to find the answer to your question on Google, it took a single three word search and reading a paragraph from the first link. If you can't do that bare minimum level of effort then stay away from mains voltage, you're clearly incompetent.
are you going to do anything other than be a condescending asshole tonight
Yea, I'm going to be a safety advisor and try to get some thick-skulled idiot to not burn his house down.
Go hire a professional if you can't figure it out.
Let's stop this here
i'm not hiring a professional to tell me which way a device goes when wiring it across the live and neutral just before the load. all i'm trying to figure out is if there even is a right way
and you're being such an asshole about it for no reason
You can deny it all you want but there is a reason.
yeah, the reason is that you just want to be an asshole on the internet. it's how you pass your time. you can't stand the fact that someone is trying to plan out what they're going to do before they do it so you wanna just be an asshole to pass the time
Guys drop it
If you had put as much effort into finding the answer as you've put into arguing with me you'd have it by now.
Personal insults aren't needed
are you gonna keep playing this game of "i know more than you, you're such an idiot" or are you actually going to give any bit of helpful information
I am giving you helpful advice. Stay away from things that can kill you when you don't know what you're doing.
i turn off the breaker for any circuit i work on and use a voltage tester to ensure that any wire i interact with isn't hot before interacting with it. i'm not gonna get killed. are you gonna keep being an asshole now?
I was never being an asshole. I was expressing safety concerns that your tantrum has done nothing to alleviate.
You only think I'm an asshole because I'm telling you no.
i think you're an asshole because you've done nothing but be an asshole
I recommend you both stop before the mods get involved
I can live with you thinking I'm an asshole. Can you live with 120v across your chest?
@static schooner after much practice....
I'd be terrified of what is unknowingly a live circuit in your house when you're demonstrating this level of comprehension over A/C polarity.
shit while i'm at it i might as well go into my breaker box and stick screwdrivers into both live phases for 240v through my chest while i'm at it
I assume the music is you, live?
since that's how much of an idiot you think i am
That's basically how Frank Grimes died
After 1300 times I can be a little joyful, can't I?
oh right, you don't have that music for local festivities o.0
do you want me to post a picture of the voltage detector i use before messing with wires to make you happy? do you want me to post a video of me turning off the breaker to the relevant inductive load that i bought the RC snubber for before you'll give any kind of meaningful information?
No, you're off the mark of where the concerns actually are and really should go get a professional.
My main concern is you don't know how grounding works.
if i'm so off the mark, and you're so concerned, why don't you give any actual safety advice
you think i'm not aware that if i touch a single live wire that my body could complete a circuit between live and ground and i could die?
Because if you understood A/C grounding and polarity you probably wouldn't be asking these questions to begin with. These are not topics that should be taught in a couple messages over Discord, you need to go put actual effort into learning this.
๐ถ๐ค obโn hintan beag ๐๏ธ๐ผ๐ช๐บ
Or, if you don't want to go learn what you're doing, hire a professional.
.
I don't think you recognize the danger or potential situations where it's possible to create non-obvious configurations where that happens.
i understand that in a/c polarity isn't strictly positive and negative and that the live wire is both positive and negative at a frequency of 60ish hz
At first sight, it was clear that would end poorly ๐
i understand that i'm not an electrical engineer either
Making good latte art is like knowing how to install a snubber...
i understand that there are things i don't know
and that's why i'm asking
to find out
Yea, but you also need to understand how polarity works in reference to chassis grounding and making sure you're not accidentally energizing chassis, you need to understand wire nuts/wagos and how to connect it all properly, you need to make sure you're not mixing metals, you need to make sure wires are the correct gauges.
It's not just 'tab a into slot b' and done
wire nuts ๐คข
Yea wire nuts are stupid
Not pink ones
But there's a whole system to using them right and if you don't follow it you're creating a dangerous situation
just make sure to crimp end pieces onto your solid core wires ๐
pls no crimping of solid core wires
Wife sent that to me. She cracks up at my craze over coffee ๐
i can assure you that
- i am not energizing chassis. when i am done there are no exposed conductors (with the exception of the bare ground wires) anyways
- i don't use wire nuts, i use wagos.
- the wire in my walls is 12 guage, even for 15 amp circuits. i'm not sure why, maybe the installers just didn't wanna bother keeping track of 12/14 guage for the 15/20 amp circuits in the house. the only circuits i've worked on or will work on are 15 amp, so i have solid core 14 guage wire that i use when i need it
yea, why would you go crazy over something so aweful?
I'm not even sure what the base drink was. Some Americano thing?
No idea
If it was supposed to be espresso, it was a pretty poor example ๐
they might not have used their best brew for a joke video ๐ค
A metal chassis will be wired directly to one of the A/C lines. "no exposed conductors" has nothing to do with anything. That cap does not look like 12awg wire, but you might be using a different gauge than me.
Topped with some hot water ๐คฃ
Sorry, but this just further reinforces that you don't know how to safely do the work you're asking about.
Was that fat free milk?
That's an Americano, which is a good thing for some folks, just not me. It's actually in vogue now
Meant to say cold water.
i can live with some random person on the internet not thinking i can do something safely. the fact of the matter is i've never done anything without ensuring that it was safe before hand and all i've done tonight is try to start the process of ensuring something that i want to do is safe beforehand
are you sure they didn't top it with the tears of a barista?
If you want to be safe beforehand you need to get more of an education than asking questions on Discord will provide, or just go hire a professional.
Salt does cut bitterness
i'll get educated by people who aren't condescending assholes
I'm really not the problem here.
keep telling yourself that
Red wine vinegar too
I think I went too far with prime day crap today.
oh god, if you say that... Did you buy a couple of cars?
More like a couple of private jets
Quad flies everywhere
New jet per week
Never have to clean them
Lmao not that crazy. But little too many cameras, turmeric capsules.....
just one or two REDs
Used to drool over Reds. Those days are long gone now.
I assume they are incredibly inpracticle unless you have dedicated people operating them ๐ค
Wasn't a big chunk of RED's model just taking existing technologies and putting proprietary connectors on them then charging 10x the price?
I remember seeing people bitch about their proprietary storage
Hmm not really. Same same. Only skillful person required would be the focus puller.
๐คท I barely understand phone camera operations. So I'm not going to pretend
RED helped drones a lot in early days. The perfect form factor to complement early days of brushless gimbals
What, you don't want to pay 10ร the price for an mSATA SSD in a fancy aluminium case?
As appealing as that sounds...
just set it to auto and let godogle take the wheel
I quite liked what BlackMagic was doing back in the day around that; the camera just had a slot that fit a 2.5" SATA SSD, and they sold a nice 19" rackmount reader that hooked up by thunderbolt and fit four SSDs to offload them
but does it have a fancy apple logo?
I've noticed myself using the pro mode more often on my phone's camera, the normal photo mode tries to balance everything to around an indoor lit brightness and it makes it inaccurately represent anything in a darker environment, almost like an anti-HDR.
Bring it a stop down in auto mode
My camera shows an ev slider, but between that and the temperature control I can generally fix it quickly.
I know the exposure has something to do with stops but I don't know the exact relationship
I could probably download a more advanced app for it but the Samsung camera app has been fine so far. I have an S21 UItra.
As long as you play safe and don't put anyone else in danger, go have fun. There's no right or wrong way to DIY. ๐
๐ won't do anything until i know it's safe! luckily i was able to get a much quicker answer from someone who wasn't a condescending asshole so i can start planning how i'm gonna actually get it wired in parallel. depending on how the fan is wired, i'll probably just use two 3 connector wagos
electricity is fun
during the first month at my job I asked my manager to come to the lab, so I can bridge a fuse and blame him if it goes wrong ๐
You should still read up on how grounding works if you haven't, it's good info to have.
I left a phantom flex with the drone about quarter mile out off Santa Monica pier once. Had to get some helpful divers to collect the pieces. So there's that ๐คฃ
Must be a decent size drone to carry that
Yes a heavy lifter. They don't like pyro right underneath them. Who knew.
did you shoot it with some fireworks, or was the heat of them going off enough to throw it off? ๐ค
Fly through pyro sequence, IMU didn't like the vibration.
Lol return to office
Disgusting
Some people like the office
Freaks
I love they call it "return to office trend" when it is generally a forced return in many parts
"decree" is the word they're looking for
it's a trend within CEOs ๐คท
Like HPE, "we would like to see you return to the office 2-3 days a week to work closer with colleagues" aka "we CEOs own property, and it is plummeting in the US because noone is using the offices, please we will lose millions"
I just don't want to have a industrial robot in my home o.0
The one that I find the most amusing is the number of companies that "consult" with their staff around a hybrid schedule, then just ignore them and do what they were going to do all along
I saw the California offices were mostly worthless now, and owners were panicking because they might have to convert offices to housing, oh no
At some point they just need to drop the pretense that anything anyone says is going to change their need to justify their office leases
Oh no, how will we survive if people have modestly-priced places to live. Mayhem! Cats and dogs sleeping together!
My wife's contract says 50% hybrid, she is currently doing maybe 1 day a week in office
I never signed out hybrid contract because it was utter bullshit, so my office is in the actual office, I've been there 4 times this year
I'm not even sure what mine says o.0
Kids these days!
my payroll says I've been in the office 3 times this year
we don't store that data for longer than 30 days D:
can't be forced to reveal data you don't have ๐
well they have to differentiate between home office and office days
Why though?
taxes and they pay my internet and electricity per day
that sounds annoying
why?
i find it pretty entertaining
they keep sending me laptops they have to pay for every day and I don't even use
Office is nice, doing a few days there means I get to talk to people
Plus my supervisor has to listen to what flexible working I want, have 1 day a week but may look at 2 days a week at some point
I talk to people all day, don't need to go to the office for that
I do my real work wfh
Office is talking shit with everyone lol
What? that sounds like some process that needs improving
Very ungerman
But yeah Iโm a fan of flexible working, even though company push is to have more flexible working arrangements lol
Even required under our contract that everyone must get a day a week and your manager canโt shut it down
they want a work life balance and flexibility
but you said annoying, now it has to improve? what?
Yes? What what?
Like, annoying processes should be improved to not be annoying
Or needlessly wasteful on top
what is annoying about that for me? why should it improve? thats a win-win for me
Wasting money is a win for you? ๐ค
far from annoying
we are owned by banks which are also our only clients
thats not my wasted money
Yesterday's GPU install was โฌ1.2M btw, I'm waiting for a new one that is โฌ430M and another project that is โฌ12M
There is a lot of AI going on
Kinda glad our work doesn't lend itself to heavy GPU use, means we're not really finding ourselves in strong competition for hardware.
Installing a shitload of CPU compute though
There is quite long lead times now
I rolled out 120 new CPU compute nodes last year for the same cluster I upgraded yesterday
They are doing quite a mixed load
Total is about 500 nodes now, and 16 of those are GPU
Some big mem nodes
What's big memory in your world?
Ah yes, which puts you on the "beaucoup dollars" tier of memory pricing.
The pricing on 128GB DDR5 is... problematic
Well, you should see the 256 and 512 modules then
I got a hint of the 256s, then stopped asking
I installed 64 256 dimms in two systems just after Christmas
That was fun
Replaced the CPUs from gold to platinum too
I'm hoping 96GB DIMMs actually materialise, 24ร 96G (2.25T) would probably be good for what we're doing
Epyc Genoa's 1DPC limitation hasn't really come to bite us (yet). Sapphire Rapids Xeons seem to lose a lot of speed in 2DPC mode though (4400MT/s)
I did a NDA meeting with the EMEA president of AMD, and I'm really optimistic to AMD for the first time in 12 years
AMD definitely seem to like us ๐ I might well have been the first person (who didn't work for either AMD or a server manufactuer) to test a Genoa-X CPU on something that wasn't made by Supermicro.
Unsolicited care packages of CPUs for the win!
Optimistic for server area or all of the industry
If anyone wanted to combine heating and cooling in a single climate entity, i have a working version now
For AMD products going forward, both GPU and CPU
Nice!
I'm actually upgrading my laptop with an AMD board when it arrives
Seems to be a huge performance boost over Intel
Yeah, I don't care about consumer though ๐
I'm only looking at 64 core upwards and MI300x stuff
Yeah I care about consumer
Because it's a) only thing I can afford
B) why would I want enterprise
a) applies to both purchase price, and power consumption
Eh power consumption isn't a concern
Power is relatively cheap, at least for Australia
Our dual 9684X / 1.5TB systems use 1.45kW each running flat out. No GPUs, only a single SSD
The old Superdome systems were also quite power hungry
with 16 cell boards and 192 PCI-X slots

A full configuration took 23h to boot
Better hope you don't miss pressing the delete key for the bios and have to reboot it again ๐คฃ
I spent a lot longer than I wanted today staring at slow-ass option ROM screens, so I might be a bit salty about slow-booting systems
thankfully there is no BIOS on the superdome
if you want to miss the bios key, running a BL660 G6 with 1TB ram takes 45 minutes to display the post screen, because Intel wanted to test the memory before starting post
great fun troubleshooting memory issues
We've got some Oracle ZFS systems that are like that. 96ร 16GB DIMMs, 40+ minute boot time
They were at least kind enough to put a supercapacitor on each memory riser so when you pull it out you still get an error LED next to the individual socket
I did find the IBM boxes with memory trace leds quite interesting, but not really a great value as it just adds to something that can break
They actually only stopped putting the Sun logo on them (both the servers, and their branded racks) a year or so ago. Just says Oracle now
Surprised it took that long
Oh, I thought it was longer since
The boxes I saw last in 2012 or did have Oracle logos
thankfully I haven't seen any irl since, a few remote though
Yeah, others are seeing the same thing
Some of my servers are working, some partly working, and others are just borked
I need to watch that episode again
may be a specific server issue, as I'm not seeing any outage here in sunny socal
What series is this
maybe Malcolm in the Middle?
nvm
the instructions at https://www.reddit.com/r/uBlockOrigin/ worked for me.
I just pay for YouTube Premium, don't want my kids to see ads and I watch so much YouTube instructional videos it would be very annoying
Especially since I can't install blockers everywhere
Offline is also nice
Considering the usual argument is that a lot of people are paying for Spotify, but YTP gets you a "good enough" music service as well as ad-free youtube for the same price.
In fact looking at it, seems like spotify actually costs more here in NZ; single user membership is $17 vs $16 for YTP
yeah, I don't use YT music, just video
Also family membership of Spotify costs as much as 1.5 accounts
and you get 5 accounts
YT premium family is also the price of 1.5 or so users with 5 users
Its why I convinced my parents to pay for my Spotify years ago
And then my partner also links off it too now lol
yeah, we do one for each of the kids, one for me and the wife and one for the house
so stuff we all use don't mix up algorithms
I should move to a family YouTube membership for my partner and I
Currently mine is the one on the tvs and they deal with ads when they use their phone
YT Music has a really bad app
I have a branded YT account because I refused to remake it with my real name back when Google+ came out, I have to sign out of that YT account and sign into my real name YT account to use YouTube Music. Then if I want any of my YT history I'd have to sign back out and into my branded account. Between that and YT pausing if you start playing somewhere else if you have premium makes premium an all around worse experience than free YT, imo.
I do love spotify, because it moves with me, my laptop runs spotify, the kitchen speakers run spotify, my phone runs spotify and my car runs spotify natively
so whenever I start the car it resumes where I paused before
I hate the spotify mobile app on android, it doesn't resume playing if the internet connection is missing (which is the case in my apartment complex's carpark, about 50% of the time I have coverage)
But even though the music is fully downloaded offline, it'll only play if I skip the current song for some reason
Also does the same on planes too
Instructions? I just clicked the X and kept watching without ads...
Interesting timing on YouTube discussion, I signed up with my VPN set to Ukraine today for about 4USD a month for a family plan. Dunno how long it will last (Indian one lasted two years) but Iโm with @clear ferry - donโt want my kids watching their crappy ads
Funny enough, when you watch kids stuff the ads come more often
like, if my daughter is watching something that is 5 minutes there is 5 ads, if I watch something that is 1h there is two ads
without premium
I'm still yet to see any adblocking stuff
I always seem to get changes to Google products rolled out to me dead last
That's phase 1, phase 2 gives you 3 videos, phase 3 blocks you entirely
I got adguard running now but it doesn't seem to block yt ads
YT premium has zero value for me other than blocking ads so f that
I mean, YT premium is nice to watch videos in de background
I can do that already?
via what
my pc
Not on your phone you canโt. I can change to another app and still listen to it in the background.
No problems here with adguard and ublock. Never seen issues maybe Iโm in the next wave.
But also on ios no ads or anything
Havin DNS over TLS seems to help imo
there are alternative YT apps on android which can do it as well. But I don't use YT on my phone. In fact I try to keep my phone usage to the bare minimum
yeah the first people were hit months ago, NL got hit this week. Probably depends on your location
I use "sTube" on all of my nvidia shields, It works pretty well.
vinegar for ios
blocks ads, loads native video player, lets you chose resolution, lets you run in PiP
its not even an app, its a safari extension
so you can keep on using their mobile website. i hate the app
stopthemadness + adguard home
vinegar has been causing issuesd with embeded videos for me
anyone experience with the lightest self hosting method for web pages right now? (no wordpress or anything crap like that), but super light and fast web hosting)
lighttpd and static files

Or some chain that ends in pandoc
running traefik now as reverse proxy. I guess thats good enough for web hosting
some say cloudflare pages, but I guess its still best to self host
another one bit the dust today. but again a 1.2 board

big unifi deployment ๐
It always annoyed me how the UBB is nearly 2ร the price of the basically-identical GBE.
Like it has proper 802.3 PoE and UniFi controller support, but otherwise you're paying $499 for the pretty much the same thing you can have a pair of for $258.
Yuck unifi
The USW-Flex is a pretty cool thing (1-in-4-out PoE is a rarity, especally with its bt-in/at-out power figures), but I'm definitely over their APs and switches in general.
The thing that would - if not fix, then at least strongly help - the not-quite-enterprise design would be adding some form of MLAG to the higher-end switches, and LACP to the routers.
You can't at the moment design a truly fault-tolerant network, because the only resiliency you have is spanning-tree.
Because it's a controller-based system, abstracting away the complexity of MLAG and making two switches look and act like one should be an absolute cake-walk too.
Yea but for remote management I figured all in UniFi would be nice
I even added the dust caps to upset atx
Oh don't get me wrong, I still think you made the right choice there. It's just a really tough call to spend that much more for it
I walked past a McLaren in the garage when I went to survey the place lol
He wants Wi-Fi 6e and a guest house with solid internet so we went a lil crazy
unifi is alright. their AP points are doing well, but the routers are way too limited. looks pretty though.
APs are fine, but I got referred to as "elitist" (and, somehow, a "cisco shill", now sure how they made that connection) by telling people to avoid the MediaTek ones and only buy the Qualcomm
Now that - nearly 5 years later - they finally implemented per-VLAN PPSK with a single SSID, you can actually do some cool stuff too
Meanwhile I'm over here avoiding Ubiquiti like the plague, buying used HPE Aruba WAPs off eBay
Ubiquiti just seems like prosumer nonsense. They still don't offer redundant management controllers, which is always the ask that nukes Ubiquiti from the running in enterprise deployments.
And redundant controllers would have been real nice when 1st gen cloudkeys were burning up left and right... I hear the 2nd gen ones are better, but still.
The early Gen 2s were still flawed. They have an internal LiPo battery which tended to go spicy pillow after only ~18 months
I think the later ones don't have the battery at all (I guess they fixed the issue with the MongoDB corruption on unclean shutdown?)

should authentik have a radius or ldap server behind it? got a bit confused of the flow, or does it replace ldap/radius fully?
I have never worked with the auth apps before and thought its time

I have a CR0078 barcode scanner cradle (from the Zebra company)
It can be used in a vertical mount orientation, but that requires moving the hook.
https://i.skystuff.cc/01xasQ1rRKfB.png
On the slim chance anybody here knows how, could you guide me in the right direction on how to do this? (Or point me somewhere else that might know?)
I've already tried pushing up on it, but putting a significant amount of force on it did nothing, and I don't want to break it
I manged to figure it out, you have to disassemble it and push up on some tabs that are on the bottom
https://www.zebra.com/content/dam/zebra_new_ia/en-us/manuals/barcode-scanners/ds6878-product-reference-guide-a-en-us.pdf

Oh. Too late ๐

and reverse the hook so that it is in position to secure the digital scanner in place. (See Figure 1-3 on page 1-4
for the location of the convertible mount hook.)
Yeah, but getting the mount hook to move was a real pain

Hmm so I've set up a wireguard site2site vpn with opnsense on both ends, I can ping any device on the other network from the opnsense firewall itself, but from a device on the network I can only go as far as the wireguard IPs, not the other subnet
Have firewall rules in place for the WG interface (subnet a can access any), and nothing in firewall live logs either
Any clues?
probably a missing return route on the other site? ๐ค
or are both VPN hosts the respective primary routers?
Maybe some static routes missing
could of course also be a routing issue on the side you ping from
Have you tried to tcpdump on the VPN hosts and see how far the pings go?
They are yes
Have rules from the WG subnet to anything, and source IP to anything
Both sides can't ping more than that WG subnet
And LAN has access to anything back anyway
No but thats smart
Okay so it seems like if its subnet a, pings will be seen on the device on subnet b, but the returns aren't getting through
And pings sent from subnet b, won't be seen on subnet a
So its something in my subnet a firewall rules then....
do you need to enable related in some firewall? ๐ค
I've done everything the same for the two
Same rules, etc
Just changed the IPs to match the opposite
subnet b is missing a route
Do you know where I can find where they should be listed in opnsense?
ideally you want wg to make these
Nope seems to be a route actually
Seems it was created
I need to sleep now, willing to try anything when I wake in the morning
This is giving me a headache, it should work
you can define routes in system - routes
I've set 2 routes there but only because I use these sites as gateways for certain subnets
so yeah, wireguard should definitely make these upon connection
Yeah and I checked there are routes defined for the other subnets
So in reality it should work
remove these. if you don't tell wgthat you make these manually they will get into conflict
or tell wireguard to not make them
I didn't make them. Wg made them
no it didn't
the ones wireguard makes don't show up there
There is a section that they do show
they get created dynamically
Not the main states
Regardless I didn't add anything. It has other stuff too (can't remember exactly where)
Given they match the side that's working I'm not concerned. I think it's some firewall rule
firewall rules don't create routes ?
No. I'm saying I don't think it's routes causing it
there's this if you manually specify them
Again, I haven't manually specified anything route related
I'm just thinking it has to be some firewall rule issue
Hello together,
currently I have some shelly 1pm to monitor socket consumption.
My problem is, that for each room, all sockets are connected in series.
So the first socket will show the power of all other sockets. Only the last in the series will show the actual usage.
Any idea to have a sensor for each shelly which displays the actual consumption?
there is no way your sockets are in series
Each is connected to each other.
Sorry, parallell
But they are wired, that for example if the first shelly is turned off, all other are off too.
I guess its not wired correctly then?
Normally they should be independent I guess?
A friend installed it.
I guess he installed the shelly to the socket and the second socket is connected to the socket itself instead of the shelly, so when the shelly is off, the next socket remains off as well.
there should be a T-junction, one going to the shelly and the other end going to the next socket
is it truely a T junction when wagos look more like an m?
from a topology/graph perspective, they are the same thing lol
TTT there. wago.
XXXXXXXX
Outlets are generally wired in series with the rest of the outlets on that circuit/in that room, it's the most efficient way to wire it.
You can also do stuff like have one GFCI outlet provide GFCI/RCD protection to an entire room like that.
idk about the rest of the world but US outlets will have a set of terminals (and sometimes those awful insert holes) for each plug on the outlet that are linked together with a breakaway tab, one set of terminals is generally used for a link to the breaker box and the other is used for a link to the next outlet on the circuit.
Or you can break the breakaway tab away and feed each socket independently, like if you want to switch one outlet with a wall switch but not the other.
I think you mean cascaded? We have groups which are parellel, each on their own fuse. Then the loads on each group (sockets) are cascaded. (I'm in EUW)
Well, okay. The current isn't actually flowing in series across the devices plugged in.
right, what you described is "parallel", not "series"
It's more of a daisy-chained parallel. I'm not familiar with 'cascaded'
Yea, I was thinking series as in each one daisy chains, not series as in the electrical term.
yes, sorry, I am an EE so the words may main something different to me lol
But it does flow through each receptacle's terminals.
Pretty sure Timo meant series as in daisy chained, not series as in electrically in series.
Yes, daisy chained is fine
but you need a T junction otherwise you interrupt the flow to other sockets
Yea, it sounds like that's what he's missing. I'd be worried about overloading whatever he's using to control the circuit with running multiple outlets off of it, idk what the shelly is but there's a lot of 10A or less modules out there.
multicast snubbers are the real danger
Here's a quick description of what @prisma briar was talking about: https://inspectapedia.com/electric/Electrical-Outlet-Wiring-Series-vs-Parallel.php. Basically, instead of T connections it's possible to wire US outlets so that there's no pigtail connected to the device. Instead, a small part of the device itself becomes part of the entire circuit. It's as horrible as it sounds. Technically allowed by NEC, but local enforcement may prohibit and it's a bad practice everywhere. It's done by lazy electricians and sometimes when the box is small and there's not enough room for nut/wago.
Pretty sure that's very, very common in the US
Every house I've ever lived in has been wired like that
all my outlets were wired that way
I've heard it called series outlet wiring, I never made the connection to that being conflated with a circuit in series until now.
Yikes, none of mine were like that when I moved in. They sure as heck aren't now. I've no idea what would be the "proper" name for it.
(FWIW, built in 1983, I moved in 1997).
Everywhere I've lived was built in the 70s
lol, could be worse. My father's house was built in '71 or '72, during that very short time aluminum wiring was legal.
any normal outlet that you buy anywhere has two connections per terminal, so they get used ๐
My parents house had aluminum wiring. Led to a small electrical fire when I was a kid then we got it all replaced.
It had aluminum wiring on copper screws everywhere
Actually they didn't get it all replaced, they covered some of the connections in a dielectric grease intended to prevent corrosion instead
Yeah, I've got a tube of that stuff too. You can also get special wire nuts that have a bunch of the grease pre-squeezed into it.
His neighbor implemented a much more effective solution, but for other reasons he already had to remove all the drywall and replace the main panel...
We ended up having our main panel replaced too, it was all wildly out of code. It was 70s wiring and DIY stuff my dad tacked on
For perspective I had a conversation with him about why you can't use ground as neutral even though it technically works maybe a year ago
So him adding on an auxiliary panel was not a good idea
Fortunately my dad was comfortable with everything except electrical, and my degree is EE. Also he's a PhD in metallurgy, so acutely aware of corrosion issues. Lots of fun on airplanes talking about microcracks.
So you have something against these? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bootleg_ground
My extent of power is replacing light switches and ceiling fans along with replacing power cords and wiring some relays in. I also wired my A/C in when I did it.
Heh, yea, I like proper grounding. I don't want some of my ground to have potential compared to other ground because it was used as a neutral line either.

Add long as they have some kind of way to do mods versioning
Because that's the thing I don't like in c:s
Yeah I wish you could load a save and it would pull all the old mods used and their version
Because so many of my old saves are broken from new mods with cs
I bought a couple hAP ax3. Still way less than what I paid for the Netgear crap
those actually look nice
haven't seen that model before
I should try to get the region head of Aruba to send me some Aruba 615 and Aruba 6400s, would be a nice upgrade
Gotta love connections. Sadly the only ones I have are Microsoft
That as well
But also, a lot of mods are linked to certain DLC
I can't even launch my game now because God knows why
Dis very me!
My #2 is 'see what has exploded overnight that I need to deal with as soon as I get out from under the warm, comfy covers'
yep
Often coupled with 'be disappointed with the lack of progress on some hot issue that has now become my problem'
things never change do they
My standard call when I arrive at work and am at my desk is: "Damage report!" ๐
iPhone comes out of "sleep" mode, Slack has 37 messages for me
At least with a laptop, it was far less convenient and less likely to start the business day in bed
Hey! Did Zack Freedman make a Home Assistant video?
Javascript! lol
Well, that was relatively on point. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8y2LjkndbCM

I guess this is something I have to watch lol
It's fun watching him discover stuff I've been using for years.
I started out the video asking "why is he doing all this from scratch when there are premade boards/devices, and plenty of open-source firmware (Tasmota, ESPHome, WLED) that would do the job quicker and easier?"
And very quickly realized it was purely because he had no idea any of that existed until waaay too late. lol

it's #the-water-cooler we get real weird with it
anyone here have RGBCCT installed?
the more i read and watch the more im leaning in this direction
thoughts and experiences?
for context this is for under kitchen cabinets
Is home automation really that niche that even the nerds don't know about it?
If you watch the video, he says he was actively avoiding home automation for a very long time, because IoT was an immature dumpster fire not all that long ago.
Now it's a mature dumpster fire ๐
I mostly use the CCT part and I find it useful to a point where I probably wouldn't get just RGBW
I mean I love his videos but to me 3d printing and home automation perfectly overlap in their geeky dumpsterfierdness
what is your setup strip and controller?
Wled for the most part with some older milights mixed in
I have older milight controllers for those kinds of strips, but I wouldn't recommend them at this point since they don't return their status. So while they work fine they can be a pain. Do you have anything specific in mind that you want to know?
#hardware-archived or #zigbee-archived might be better depending on what you have in mind
my goal at this point is to have an RGB but also have a CW and WW in the mix
and id prefer my voltage to be 12v
but im not married to 12v
12V you'll mostly find strips that are single color rather than addressable for every led. Sounds like that's fine for you though
Get 12V rgbcct strip and any wifi or ZigBee controller for it and you should be golden. If you need addressable, then wled and #diy-archived
not married to 12v. i just find high amp power supplies to be more expensive and 5v comes will pitfalls

anybody have that working yet?
