I just noticed that I over contributed to my HSA last year and to pull the excess out I have to print out a form and fax it to the plan administrator. Welcome to 2023, folks

#

Luckily, we're moving away from these Neanderthals to some other provider

#

and the form is literally: name, account #, company, phone number, and a checkbox to refund the excess

#

it's quite possibly the dumbest thing I've had to do

#

they already have all the information in the header from my account, of course

#

they coulda even provided a pre-filled version, but not even that

static schooner
#

We have two multifunction printer/scanner things on my floor and I was concerned that I didn't see "fax" as an option in the first one. Luckily, the second one saved the day

primal laurel
#

im from the 90's, I have never seen a fax machine in my life

static schooner

this is Optum, which handles the HSA for both my previous and current employer

clear ferry
#

What a strange concept HSA is, I've never heard of this before, had to Google

static schooner
#

it's basically Yet Another Pretax Investment Account for me. max it out and move on

clear ferry
#

Yeah, I wouldn't need one of those since everything is covered already, as long as I pay the maximum fee of $200 a year in consultation and medication that is

#

Sounds similar to what kids can do to save up to a house here, just for future medical stuff

static schooner
#

doesn't have to be medical stuff. It becomes general retirement funds

clear ferry
#

Interesting

static schooner
#

more free money from my company

#

I can invest it while it sits there

clear ferry
#

We have three ways to save retirement
One part comes from state as long as we earn money state puts a fixed amount from taxes to retirement

One part comes from employer, they do up to 7% of your salary (on top of your salary) to retirement

One part is what we want to invest ourselves, which is voluntary and not capped

All three go into a government account that is locked away until you retire

static schooner
#

that's not too dissimilar from the US, in that "locked away" means you pay a 10% penalty to withdraw

clear ferry
#

Oh no penalties, you just can't take money from it until you are 62 or medically retired

static schooner
#

my point is that we can, it just costs a penalty

clear ferry
#

Yeah, we can't, and if you don't have any heirs it is inherited by state

static schooner
#

the second one, at least

#

the first one starts at retirement (or 62.5, I think) and the third is a free-for-all

Getting a not shit 3D printer let me enjoy 3D printing again

#

I gave up on using my Ender 3 for anything more than basic shapes

primal laurel
#

Took some tweaking but I knew that

prisma briar
#

My new printer is about 10x as fast and gives better quality prints than my Ender 3 does. The convenience that that speed gives is so nice.

primal laurel
#

But what did it cost๐Ÿ˜‚

#

I got my ender 3 for โ‚ฌ130, hard to beat

prisma briar
#

The printer itself was $699, but I got a combo that came with a filament switcher for $950.

I have about $600 in my Ender 3 right now, mostly because I got mine for $300 right after they launched and have since replaced most of it.

#

I have dual z axis motors on mine, replaced the mobo and screen, replaced the psu, replaced the bed, replaced a motor that was missing steps, converted it to direct drive, replaced the springs holding the bed with stiffer ones, added an esp3d to it for network control, redid all the wiring, replaced all the fans, replaced the hotend

#

I'm down to just the frame and a couple motors of the original ender 3 left

primal laurel
#

That's a lot

prisma briar
#

I got mine in late 2018

#

Might have been early 2019, can't remember for sure

primal laurel
#

I added a webcam, octoprint, led bar, glass bed and auto leveler

prisma briar
#

Oh yea, I added an auto leveler probe, too. I have a webcam for mine too but I use it for other things too so didn't think about it.

#

And I have a greenhouse enclosure for it with an RGBWW LED strip ran around the inside on a Zigbee module

#

I have an HA automation that turns the lights on and off with the ping status of the esp3d module I put on it

#

The RGBWW lights were overkill but I had like 5 feet left over from another project

primal laurel
#

Mine is addressable so I can do some cool effects based on the state of the printer

#

Also added a power meter plug

#

And an automation that sends a push notification to my phone with a button that can then turn everything off

prisma briar
#

I just got my first strand of argb leds, I set them up with WLED. I'm making some light-up numbers to put on the front of my house.

Got these rc snubbers to wire in parallel with fans I'm controlling via smart switches, how do I determine the polarity here? Which wire needs to be wired with line and which wire needs to be wired with neutral?

golden wing

that's one of the most condescending answers i've ever gotten to what seems like a basic question lol

#

i've been searching in regards to the polarity of these rc snubbers but i can't find any kind of datasheet or anything

which is why i figured i might as well post somewhere where it's likely someone else has used similar devices in a similar way to see

prisma briar
#

I don't really care if you find me condescending. What you're doing is dangerous with the level of expertise you are demonstrating.

golden wing
#

i haven't demonstrated any level of expertise. i've asked a question. you're acting as if i posted a picture of myself sticking live and neutral in the same wago wondering why the breaker trips when i turn it on

#

what exactly about adding this in parallel is so much more dangerous than other diy projects i've done fine and without issue like shelly and smart switch installations

prisma briar
#

No, I'm acting like you're holding the live and neutral wires and asking which one to put into which side of the outlet. Because that's essentially what you're doing.

golden wing
#

would you care to explain what exactly is so hazardous and deadly about what i'm asking or are you just gonna keep being a condescending asshole

prisma briar
#

Your basic questions indicate a general lack of awareness or familiarity with voltages and configurations that can easily kill you or a loved one.

If someone popped on here asking how to jack their car up to drop a transmission I'd respond in the same manner. Go find a professional.

golden wing

No, you're off the mark of where the concerns actually are and really should go get a professional.

#

My main concern is you don't know how grounding works.

golden wing

if i'm so off the mark, and you're so concerned, why don't you give any actual safety advice

#

you think i'm not aware that if i touch a single live wire that my body could complete a circuit between live and ground and i could die?

prisma briar

i can assure you that

  1. i am not energizing chassis. when i am done there are no exposed conductors (with the exception of the bare ground wires) anyways
  2. i don't use wire nuts, i use wagos.
  3. the wire in my walls is 12 guage, even for 15 amp circuits. i'm not sure why, maybe the installers just didn't wanna bother keeping track of 12/14 guage for the 15/20 amp circuits in the house. the only circuits i've worked on or will work on are 15 amp, so i have solid core 14 guage wire that i use when i need it

Freaks

#

I love they call it "return to office trend" when it is generally a forced return in many parts

ocean oar
#

"decree" is the word they're looking for

glacial knot
clear ferry
#

Like HPE, "we would like to see you return to the office 2-3 days a week to work closer with colleagues" aka "we CEOs own property, and it is plummeting in the US because noone is using the offices, please we will lose millions"

glacial knot
ocean oar
#

The one that I find the most amusing is the number of companies that "consult" with their staff around a hybrid schedule, then just ignore them and do what they were going to do all along

clear ferry
#

I saw the California offices were mostly worthless now, and owners were panicking because they might have to convert offices to housing, oh no

ocean oar
#

At some point they just need to drop the pretense that anything anyone says is going to change their need to justify their office leases

ocean oar
#

Oh no, how will we survive if people have modestly-priced places to live. Mayhem! Cats and dogs sleeping together!

clear ferry
#

My wife's contract says 50% hybrid, she is currently doing maybe 1 day a week in office

#

I never signed out hybrid contract because it was utter bullshit, so my office is in the actual office, I've been there 4 times this year

Office is nice, doing a few days there means I get to talk to people
Plus my supervisor has to listen to what flexible working I want, have 1 day a week but may look at 2 days a week at some point

There is quite long lead times now

I rolled out 120 new CPU compute nodes last year for the same cluster I upgraded yesterday

They are doing quite a mixed load

Total is about 500 nodes now, and 16 of those are GPU

Some big mem nodes

3TB

ocean oar

Ah yes, which puts you on the "beaucoup dollars" tier of memory pricing.
The pricing on 128GB DDR5 is... problematic

clear ferry
#

Well, you should see the 256 and 512 modules then

ocean oar
#

I got a hint of the 256s, then stopped asking

clear ferry
#

I installed 64 256 dimms in two systems just after Christmas

#

That was fun

#

Replaced the CPUs from gold to platinum too

ocean oar

I'm hoping 96GB DIMMs actually materialise, 24ร— 96G (2.25T) would probably be good for what we're doing

clear ferry

I just pay for YouTube Premium, don't want my kids to see ads and I watch so much YouTube instructional videos it would be very annoying

Especially since I can't install blockers everywhere

#

Offline is also nice

ocean oar
#

Considering the usual argument is that a lot of people are paying for Spotify, but YTP gets you a "good enough" music service as well as ad-free youtube for the same price.

#

In fact looking at it, seems like spotify actually costs more here in NZ; single user membership is $17 vs $16 for YTP

clear ferry
#

yeah, I don't use YT music, just video

#

Also family membership of Spotify costs as much as 1.5 accounts

and you get 5 accounts

#

YT premium family is also the price of 1.5 or so users with 5 users

umbral cliff
clear ferry
#

yeah, we do one for each of the kids, one for me and the wife and one for the house

#

so stuff we all use don't mix up algorithms

umbral cliff

I should move to a family YouTube membership for my partner and I
Currently mine is the one on the tvs and they deal with ads when they use their phone

prisma briar
#

I have a branded YT account because I refused to remake it with my real name back when Google+ came out, I have to sign out of that YT account and sign into my real name YT account to use YouTube Music. Then if I want any of my YT history I'd have to sign back out and into my branded account. Between that and YT pausing if you start playing somewhere else if you have premium makes premium an all around worse experience than free YT, imo.

clear ferry

I do love spotify, because it moves with me, my laptop runs spotify, the kitchen speakers run spotify, my phone runs spotify and my car runs spotify natively

clear ferry
#

Yuck unifi

ocean oar
#

The USW-Flex is a pretty cool thing (1-in-4-out PoE is a rarity, especally with its bt-in/at-out power figures), but I'm definitely over their APs and switches in general.

#

The thing that would - if not fix, then at least strongly help - the not-quite-enterprise design would be adding some form of MLAG to the higher-end switches, and LACP to the routers.
You can't at the moment design a truly fault-tolerant network, because the only resiliency you have is spanning-tree.
Because it's a controller-based system, abstracting away the complexity of MLAG and making two switches look and act like one should be an absolute cake-walk too.

Meanwhile I'm over here avoiding Ubiquiti like the plague, buying used HPE Aruba WAPs off eBay

#

And redundant controllers would have been real nice when 1st gen cloudkeys were burning up left and right... I hear the 2nd gen ones are better, but still.

ocean oar
#

The early Gen 2s were still flawed. They have an internal LiPo battery which tended to go spicy pillow after only ~18 months

umbral cliff
#

I've done everything the same for the two

#

Same rules, etc
Just changed the IPs to match the opposite

dusky plank
#

subnet b is missing a route

umbral cliff
dusky plank
#

ideally you want wg to make these

umbral cliff
#

Nope seems to be a route actually

#

Seems it was created

#

I need to sleep now, willing to try anything when I wake in the morning

#

This is giving me a headache, it should work

dusky plank
#

you can define routes in system - routes

#

I've set 2 routes there but only because I use these sites as gateways for certain subnets

#

so yeah, wireguard should definitely make these upon connection

umbral cliff
dusky plank
#

remove these. if you don't tell wgthat you make these manually they will get into conflict

#

or tell wireguard to not make them

umbral cliff
dusky plank
#

no it didn't

umbral cliff
#

Well I didn't

#

They existed

dusky plank
#

the ones wireguard makes don't show up there

umbral cliff
#

There is a section that they do show

dusky plank
#

they get created dynamically

umbral cliff
#

Not the main states

#

Regardless I didn't add anything. It has other stuff too (can't remember exactly where)

Given they match the side that's working I'm not concerned. I think it's some firewall rule

dusky plank
#

firewall rules don't create routes ?

umbral cliff
#

No. I'm saying I don't think it's routes causing it

dusky plank
#

there's this if you manually specify them

umbral cliff
#

Again, I haven't manually specified anything route related

#

I'm just thinking it has to be some firewall rule issue

Hello together,

currently I have some shelly 1pm to monitor socket consumption.
My problem is, that for each room, all sockets are connected in series.
So the first socket will show the power of all other sockets. Only the last in the series will show the actual usage.
Any idea to have a sensor for each shelly which displays the actual consumption?

primal laurel
#

there is no way your sockets are in series

pulsar thicket
#

But they are wired, that for example if the first shelly is turned off, all other are off too.
I guess its not wired correctly then?

#

Normally they should be independent I guess?

primal laurel
#

normally one shelly channel controls one socket

#

not sure what you did

pulsar thicket
# primal laurel not sure what you did

A friend installed it.
I guess he installed the shelly to the socket and the second socket is connected to the socket itself instead of the shelly, so when the shelly is off, the next socket remains off as well.

primal laurel
#

there should be a T-junction, one going to the shelly and the other end going to the next socket

glacial knot
#

is it truely a T junction when wagos look more like an m?

primal laurel
dusky plank

prisma briar
#

You can also do stuff like have one GFCI outlet provide GFCI/RCD protection to an entire room like that.

#

idk about the rest of the world but US outlets will have a set of terminals (and sometimes those awful insert holes) for each plug on the outlet that are linked together with a breakaway tab, one set of terminals is generally used for a link to the breaker box and the other is used for a link to the next outlet on the circuit.

#

Or you can break the breakaway tab away and feed each socket independently, like if you want to switch one outlet with a wall switch but not the other.

primal laurel
prisma briar
#

Well, okay. The current isn't actually flowing in series across the devices plugged in.

static schooner
#

right, what you described is "parallel", not "series"

prisma briar
#

It's more of a daisy-chained parallel. I'm not familiar with 'cascaded'

prisma briar
primal laurel
#

yes, sorry, I am an EE so the words may main something different to me lol

prisma briar
#

But it does flow through each receptacle's terminals.

#

Pretty sure Timo meant series as in daisy chained, not series as in electrically in series.

primal laurel
#

Yes, daisy chained is fine

#

but you need a T junction otherwise you interrupt the flow to other sockets

prisma briar
#

Yea, it sounds like that's what he's missing. I'd be worried about overloading whatever he's using to control the circuit with running multiple outlets off of it, idk what the shelly is but there's a lot of 10A or less modules out there.

dusky plank
#

multicast snubbers are the real danger

winged obsidian
#

Here's a quick description of what @prisma briar was talking about: https://inspectapedia.com/electric/Electrical-Outlet-Wiring-Series-vs-Parallel.php. Basically, instead of T connections it's possible to wire US outlets so that there's no pigtail connected to the device. Instead, a small part of the device itself becomes part of the entire circuit. It's as horrible as it sounds. Technically allowed by NEC, but local enforcement may prohibit and it's a bad practice everywhere. It's done by lazy electricians and sometimes when the box is small and there's not enough room for nut/wago.

static schooner
#

Pretty sure that's very, very common in the US

prisma briar
#

Every house I've ever lived in has been wired like that

static schooner
#

all my outlets were wired that way

prisma briar
#

I've heard it called series outlet wiring, I never made the connection to that being conflated with a circuit in series until now.

winged obsidian
#

Yikes, none of mine were like that when I moved in. They sure as heck aren't now. I've no idea what would be the "proper" name for it.

#

(FWIW, built in 1983, I moved in 1997).

prisma briar
#

Everywhere I've lived was built in the 70s

winged obsidian
#

lol, could be worse. My father's house was built in '71 or '72, during that very short time aluminum wiring was legal.

static schooner
#

any normal outlet that you buy anywhere has two connections per terminal, so they get used ๐Ÿ™‚

prisma briar
#

My parents house had aluminum wiring. Led to a small electrical fire when I was a kid then we got it all replaced.

#

It had aluminum wiring on copper screws everywhere

#

Actually they didn't get it all replaced, they covered some of the connections in a dielectric grease intended to prevent corrosion instead

winged obsidian
#

His neighbor implemented a much more effective solution, but for other reasons he already had to remove all the drywall and replace the main panel...

prisma briar
#

We ended up having our main panel replaced too, it was all wildly out of code. It was 70s wiring and DIY stuff my dad tacked on

#

For perspective I had a conversation with him about why you can't use ground as neutral even though it technically works maybe a year ago

#

So him adding on an auxiliary panel was not a good idea

winged obsidian
#

Fortunately my dad was comfortable with everything except electrical, and my degree is EE. Also he's a PhD in metallurgy, so acutely aware of corrosion issues. Lots of fun on airplanes talking about microcracks.

prisma briar
#

My extent of power is replacing light switches and ceiling fans along with replacing power cords and wiring some relays in. I also wired my A/C in when I did it.

#

Heh, yea, I like proper grounding. I don't want some of my ground to have potential compared to other ground because it was used as a neutral line either.

I started out the video asking "why is he doing all this from scratch when there are premade boards/devices, and plenty of open-source firmware (Tasmota, ESPHome, WLED) that would do the job quicker and easier?"

And very quickly realized it was purely because he had no idea any of that existed until waaay too late. lol

12V you'll mostly find strips that are single color rather than addressable for every led. Sounds like that's fine for you though

Get 12V rgbcct strip and any wifi or ZigBee controller for it and you should be golden. If you need addressable, then wled and #diy-archived
