And even if we did drop 120VAC into that cabinet, we'd then need an additional plenum-rated UPS in there along with the switch

Right now, the switch is powered by PoE from a run that goes all the way back to a PoE injector in the server closet, which is backed by the server rack's UPS

The Cisco SG250-10p works perfectly in this application, as it can be powered by PoE and then power additional PoE devices (in this case, a WAP and two security cameras are powered by the PoE powered switch)

The only issue with it is it's a 1gbps switch (fully managed L3 switch, but still, only 1gbps)

It's possible to use a wider range of switches in this application by powering a non-PoE powered PoE switch with an external PoE splitter, butttttt they don't seem to make 90w PoE++ splitters.

I can't even find 60w PoE++ splitters

I don't know exactly where to ask, so I'll ask here. I have about 20-30 GU10 lights, all on the same circuit (so I can't drive them separately). However, I would like to be able to drive them separately, with minimum latency - so that at least some simple animations would be possible. I was thinking of WiFi lights, but I'm afraid of the latency. I'm thinking about getting some zigbee lights and trying that out, what would you recommend?

(I have a few E27 wifi tuya lights reflashed to openbk, the latency is just not good enough)

i dont think you will get reasonable performance for what you like out of most wireless (wifi) solutions

for the hue zigbee lights i have here, I could not really say they will do good

by default they wont even move their state sync within a group but it works if they act as tv/pc ambient light

I have sections of the house running recessed DDP, and outdoor garden lights that works with chromecast audio > ledfx . Animations galore. But regular wifi, zigbee or zw is not for that.

yeah, i have esphome w/ wled on 20 12V 5W lights driven by a esp8266, a PWM driver and some mosfets. i understand that it isn't possible to get that speed on a wireless connection, but running any sort of wire is too expensive now (too much things to destroy in the way). i guess i'll abandon this idea for now, but thank you for your answers!

Well, just burned my hand on a Raspberry Pi case...

HomeAssistant partially locked up while trying to update, and apparently got caught in some kind of loop that kicked the CPU temperature up past 72c

The Pi in question is in a metal Flirc case, so the SoC is touching the case and using it as a heatsink. The case temperature was probably about 70c as well

I was not expecting it to be that hot when I went to unplug it (WebUI was too unresponsive to issue a reboot command)

If you're already running virtual machines on VMWare, it's a massive pain to port your VMs over to Proxmox in a functional state. Moving from Hyper-V to Proxmox is even harder.

I think the biggest issue is the virtual hardware Proxmox supports really doesn't map cleanly to other hypervisors. One of the biggest roadblocks to getting VMs moved around was the fact that Proxmox likes to emulate a SATA controller with SATA disks, while most other hypervisors emulate a SCSI controller with SCSI disks

That alone meant manually fixing every single VM I ported to get it to boot with a completely different disk controller than it was expecting

That actually caused its own problems. Different incompatible SCSI controller = OS thinks it's loading the right driver, but hangs during boot anyway

The basic process wound up being "manually convert the virtual hard disk to a format Proxmox understands, switch the disk controller to IDE and the network adapter to emulated Intel E1000, and then hope it boots so you can log in and fix the OS so it'll boot on better virtual hardware"

That's kinda my point. If you use proxmox you'll find you can't switch away from it easily due to there being basically zero utilities to handle porting virtual machines out of Proxmox

Unless you count VMWare's P2V utility, but that just treats every VM as a physical box. That'll rescue VMs from Proxmox.

The sheer lack of industry support at every level keeps my away from Proxmox. If Veeam ever starts supporting it I'll consider it.

Currently, there's no support for hypervisor-level backups of Proxmox in Veeam, vRanger, ShadowProtect, or Datto.. which are basically all of the big-name enterprise backup solutions you'd use with vSphere, HyperV, Citrix, RHV, oVirt, etc.

Proxmox has its own internal backup utility, but it can only restore to Proxmox hosts.

That sucks, because it means you need to build a Proxmox host if you ever need to recover data from those backups until those backups finally age-out
