late gate
#

maybe not, so might be overkill yeah

clear ferry
#

Even i only use 10G between my storage and lab nodes

#

Everything else is 1G

#

Albeit , i have 8 NICs on my router, 8 on my lab and 6 on my production node

mellow parcel
#

sounds about right

late gate
#

well that was my plan to with high speed between storage and lab, though on drives in storage its limited how much you can upload in speed

mellow parcel
#

nics galore

late gate
#

I guess my storage gives maximum 30MB/s on the drives over network

clear ferry
#

I can easily push 4Gbit on rust

#

With 80+VMs

mellow parcel
#

slow storage eh

glacial knot
#

that's also 80+ instances of spinning rust though

late gate
#

I think I will go with the mikrotik with 12 10g slots for now, and use the unifi for the rest. The unifi router is gone, so its just the unifi switch left (24 ports)

clear ferry
#

Well, it's a 20 drive draid1

#

Write isn't great

#

Reads are fine

mellow parcel
#

yesh

clear ferry
#

I have 16 spare 2TB SSDs though

glacial knot
#

I'll take 4

#

I need a second vdev soon either way

late gate
#

@clear ferry do you think its possible to push 10gbit out of the ali router if I plug a 10g m2 to rj adapter in it?

clear ferry
#

I'm getting 24 more soon probably

mellow parcel
#

i need more ssd's

#

as do most of us

clear ferry
late gate
#

I just have one NVME that takes the things that need fast things like databases

mellow parcel
#

slowly moving to nvme

late gate
#

I guess we wont get 10G internet soon. At least I have 2.5 ports in the one I bought. I bet they will push a version with sfp soon

mellow parcel
#

most of my stuff dosn't have it though

late gate
#

On the lab I working on setting up I use a TB nvme for proxmox and core files, and a ZFS pool on some 2TB SSD drives on each node

#

Only thing it didnt seem like it was possible to install proxmox on a NVME with ZFS during install as it want to drives

mellow parcel
#

m710q hitting 9w on idle; wonder if I can scrape it down a few more

#

with frigate running on 4 cameras

late gate
#

I might throw one more node into the cluster that got a 11-13th gen cpu cause of plex and 4K transcoding. older cpu cant do proper HDR

mellow parcel
#

13th gen is nice and fast

finite atlas
#

6th gen is still plenty good for me

mellow parcel
#

for ha yeah 6th gen is plenty

finite atlas
#

proxmox

glacial knot

finite atlas
#

late gate
#

6th gen cant do proper transcoding

finite atlas
#

why

late gate
#

I hear 12th gen is better than 13th gen on transcoding

glacial knot
#

my clients can do transcoding just fine ๐Ÿคท

late gate
#

@finite atlas cant use quicksync for HDR in 4K. It came on 7th

mellow parcel
#

sounds like a plex issue

#

not a ha issue

forest edge
#

it's not the transcoding it's the file formats each gen does. earlier architecture didn't support encoding on some formats

glacial knot
finite atlas
#

more than the playback 24 fps

#

ยฏ_(ใƒ„)_/ยฏ

late gate
#

but missing encoding for the best quality, so you loose a lot quality

#

not saying it wont work

#

but just less quality

finite atlas
#

not really loosing much quality

late gate
#

that I wont argue

finite atlas
#

native and transcoded look very similar

mellow parcel
#

if not needing the gpu though 6th gen is good

late gate
#

all my clusters are four 6gen I7 and they will do fine for everything else at least

mellow parcel
#

and beat raspi pi's by miles

late gate
#

true

mellow parcel
clear ferry
#

I have still to use GPU transcode after 12 years of plex

mellow parcel
#

upgrade your hardware your playing on?

clear ferry
#

I've been running apple tv for the last 7 years probably, with a stint of Roku

forest edge
late gate
#

apple tv is not the best for direct stream though, unless you use infuse player

#

shield is good at direct

clear ferry
#

I seldom transcode anything on the atv

#

It supports virtually anything

forest edge
#

can't watch some things HDR on my older tv cause it gets too dark. thankfully the plex transcoding lightens it up lol

#

is it concidered good to use a sudo admin user in LXC or should root be used? I kinda want to use admin and bind the id to the same id as my server for easier nfs rights

#

Also any tips on how to get the hostnames in proxmox to register in opnsense? I have registred lan.domain.tld as dns search domain in opnsense, and proxmox, but I cant ping say ansible.lan.domain.tld and get local ip. Should not unbound be able to resolve that by itself?

clear ferry
#

Yuck lxc

#

Have you told opnsense to register dhcp leases in DNS?

late gate
#

yeah, but I use static ip in proxmox

#

lxc is not too bad for simple things that you dont need a full overlay. easier to pass and share gpu

finite atlas
#

lxc is great

late gate
#

I want to try to run docker on lxc to utilize the zfs benefits on docker

#

seem like its working well for other people

finite atlas
#

thats how i do it aswell, works very well indeed

late gate
#

do you have to run it privileged? I had issues with nfs in unprivileged

finite atlas
#

i dont run nfs

#

just docker in lxc

late gate
#

I like to mount nfs to be able to reuse profiles, tools, centralised configuration and such (like docker compose I never store locally, just mount)

Is there truly no option to get a gaming laptop that doesn't suck with a optical drive directly from a manufacturer?

forest edge

I think some of the alienware laptops still have bluray drives

forest edge

I don't even see sd card slots on gaming laptops any more

finite atlas
regal trench

finite atlas
regal trench

Directly from a mfr?

finite atlas

mfr?

regal trench
#

Manufacturer

finite atlas
forest edge
#

why isn't an external drive an option?

finite atlas
#

dongles are no fun to be carried around

forest edge
#

why would you want to carry around all the weight needed to house an internal one

#

always seemed to me in the past the pc outlasted the drive so I could totally see the shift from them removing them internally

regal trench
#

There are a number of reasons but one of them yes. Is dongles

#

Dongles is just one of the reasons

#

That's a big one though

forest edge
#

you can 3d print a casing for the external to mount on the bottom of the laptop with a super short usb cable then it wouldn't be so much a dongle lol

finite atlas

finite atlas
#

alright, you do you

regal trench
#

Cloud is no good for same reasons

finite atlas
#

but i'd trust a good m.2 over a cd any day

forest edge
#

yea general cd's are shit for long term

#

they degrade and the data becomes corrupted

regal trench
#

Newer optical media lasts far longer than a standard disc

forest edge
#

they do make longer lasting ones but really good ole fashion tape drives would last longer but aside from that, data on disk last a whole lot longer, espeically disc that are not always running

regal trench
#

See mdrive disks (optical) and similar

forest edge
#

do you really need centuries?

i'm not questioning the reasoning behind it, but what is of such importance to you, that you care that much?

forest edge

home videos

regal trench

#

Then there is a entire sub category that goes along with that I won't get into

#

you just need a buisness laptop

#

hell you can buy any turd with an older i7 and it would do what you need to do in the form of media burning

well proxmox is hitting the disk in an extreme level since I cluster it

Question 1: true or false

Leaves are not actually moved by the wind, but fear of meeting the thing that creates the driving force of wind causes them to move, due to an inbuilt self protection mechanism called gerbilisation.

clear ferry
#

I'll say, flue

prisma briar
late gate
#

yeah I agree, so will probably split up the filesystem to its own volume

#

the OS fs I mean

clear ferry
#

Zfs is great for os level with three way mirrors

prisma briar
#

There's some conditions where it wants you to poke at the FS before mounting that can be triggered by unexpected power losses that will pause a boot I don't like. Makes it a pita to get into systems without IPMI

clear ferry
#

But I do prefer lvm

prisma briar
#

Yea, xfs or ext4 on lvm will boot way more reliably.

clear ferry

#

true, if you have enterprise drives

is LVM snapshotting COW?

why would cephfs kill your drives?

all the i/o from the syncing

static schooner
#

Can't argue with the original Latin

static schooner
#

some of the differences are so small and weird. "different to" just sounds wrong compared to "different from"

forest edge
#

depends on sentence

static schooner
#

cherrypicked:

What is the difference between โ€œdifferent fromโ€ and โ€œdifferent toโ€ in British English? American English uses only โ€œdifferent from.โ€

โ€œDifferent fromโ€ is traditionally the preferred form. However, โ€œdifferent toโ€ (used most commonly in the UK) โ€œdifferent fromโ€ (used everywhere) and even the atrocious sounding โ€œdifferent thanโ€ (used most frequently in American English) all mean the same thing and - hereโ€™s the shocker - all three forms are accepted as correct by the Oxford Living Dictionary.

#

what good are dictionaries if they don't settle arguments? Pick a side, man

forest edge
#

one of the perks of being an american.. I don't think we are so picky about it as long as it makes sense in the surrounding sentence

#

we certainly go outside the box with our grammar and usage

static schooner
#

English is littered with intruder-alerts ๐Ÿ™‚

#

Ha, caught you - not a native speaker!

forest edge
#

even before the interwebs every part of this country spoke a little differently

#

pop vs soda, bag vs sack etc

#

ever hear a NY'er say water?

#

I swear to god it sounds like they are saying wata

static schooner
#

"buggy" vs. "cart" shiver...

forest edge
#

all these differences kind of shattered any standard as long as it makes human understandable sense

static schooner

at least we all agree that "color" is spelled "color"

Pressure sensors

glacial knot
#

I considered that. One under every leg, and then use that as make shift personal scale ๐Ÿ˜‚

#

what sensors do you use?

#

I currently just use the contact sensor for my bedroom door. Which works reliable enough as measure of me (trying to) sleep

dusky plank
#

Sf15 are the most common afaik

#

I donโ€˜t have them installed but it is planned

glacial knot
#

those would be under the mattress, not between the bed itself and the floor, right?

orchid rose
#

I'm using load cells like these. I use just one under the mattress with the weight spread around with a piece of wood on top of it

#

You can probably do some fancy stuff like weighing your SO with a more complicated system ๐Ÿ˜›

forest edge
#

no box spring under mattress?

orchid rose
#

Yes but it still works

#

It only has to read if there's something on the bed or not

forest edge
#

the added wood is what has me confused

#

wouldn't placing it under the support for the bed that touches the floor work?

orchid rose
#

It would but these are 50kg max so I would overwhelm them

#

also my vacuum would eat them

forest edge
#

ah

#

that be some vacuum to be able to suck it out from under the weight of the bed lol

orchid rose
#

I'm afraid it would rip the wires off

glacial knot
#

part of the reason I never looked into actually putting load cells under the bed
the roomba would mess with it

orchid rose
#

It works fine under the mattress but you need to spread the load out so it doesn't turn on the lights in the middle of the night when you switch sides. That was pain ๐Ÿ˜‚

glacial knot
#

I'll probably just keep it on the door for now

orchid rose
#

That probably works fine too

forest edge
#

wonder if one of those flat thermal sensors would work better

glacial knot
#

what I really need is a slightly better metric of whether I'm getting up. Proably motion sensor in my living room
So it doesn't start up everything if I just get up to take a piss at 3am

forest edge
#

although I guess it would take time for body heat to heat up the mattress lol

orchid rose
#

If your schedule is fairly regular you can just use the time of day as a condition

glacial knot
#

nah, my schedule is pretty fucked

#

I have time of day as condition when it thinks I'm going to sleep. I think anything from 8pm to 6am ๐Ÿค”
But I sometimes do get up at 3 or 4 am, and sometimes just go to the toilet and back

#

it's not too bad though. Just turns on some lights and music
And there's another automation that makes sure that the music isn't too loud between 10pm and 6am

#

Maybe I should have it in relation to how long I slept ๐Ÿค” I rarely sleep less than 5 hours.
I should try to collect some stats over a month

orchid rose
#

I have a input_boolean that switches on "bed occupied" if I go to sleep anywhere between 22-05 or something like that. Then automations that use that boolean as a condition to turn on "night lights" during night if I'm already in bed. If I get off the bed after 6AM it turns on the lights to some other scene

#

It does fail sometimes and if it's cold outside and I have the window open, the resistance of the cells changes enough so that it thinks the bed is occupied. WIP ๐Ÿ™‚

glacial knot
#

I actually already ahve that data
I incresed default retention in the recorder to 30d D:

orchid rose
#

I should try that just for fun

glacial knot
#

anyways, looking at that it's regular-ish, but not regular

orchid rose
#

Think about the boolean switch approach. If you only go to bed once a day it should help

glacial knot
#

the going to bed works^^ it's whether I'm actually getting up that's iffy

orchid rose
#

Right, that does complicate things

#

Maybe with some sort of minimum sleep time you can make it work

glacial knot
#

I'll probably try that. Minimum of 5h sleep
though with a variant that if I go to bed after 1am and get up within 45min, I'm probably actually getting up

#

because then I probably ain't sleeping well that night either way...

orchid rose
#

I still haven't gotten myself a mmwave sensor. Those might prove useful in something like this

clear ferry
#

I have one, haven't had time to play with it

#

I actually sleep more after getting kids

orchid rose
#

They have like distance modifiers etc afaik

clear ferry
#

Before kids I slept 5-6h per night, now I sleep 7-8

glacial knot
#

one that actually gives an idea in a 2D plane would be interesting
because I could put that up on the ceiling in the main connector and use the information to figure out if I'm just going to the bathroom, or somewhere else

but its a bit my fault as so much is in 4K

#

I should setup two instances of sonarr and radarr so it download in HD and 4K

forest edge
#

aside from the like quadro gpu's I am pretty sure all nvidia cards cap the amount of streams at one time

#

newer cards like the 3k series may be more than 3 but everything below that is 3 and less

#

you might be doing more cpu transcoding then you think lol

late gate
#

yeah that might, and its on the nas now (synology), on the machine I was thinking its a I9 10k cpu, and will get the intel gpu for the initial transcoding. the nvidia I want to use as a regular computer with light gaming (like I did with unraid)

#

so when the cpu is used on the nas its extremely slow

clear ferry

#

I will try. I can do it over the remote desktop thing, but it was deadly slow to start the image

You mean vpro?

yeah vpro

I stole my neighbours ZigBee light a few years back

And it's 28m from my house

brazen fable

yeah i have no idea how it's reaching but it is

#

this BT dongle must have some reach

#

it does have a big ass external antenna like the sonoff zigbee stick

#

meanwhile i can't get this motion sensor to repair even though it's sitting right under the bulb im trying to pair it to

#

OH MY

#

It appears a neighbor is going all in on the bluetooth stack

lmao

#

well that's kinda scary

one click and it imported into HA

It's a temp sensor

I actually wonder why I can't see the 5ghz ssids.... did I turn those off? Lol can't remember

brazen fable
#

6ghz has been a life saver too

#

and i use 60ghz aps to pipe internet into the garage. Not cabling that shit

#

damn near full gigabit too. It's nice

last cedar
#

My idea is to have a guest one, iot and local network

#

That is nice! I am out of touch with 6 and 60Ghz...

brazen fable
#

i have guest which i turn on/off, IOT with internet, Smart wifi stuff without internet, my main, and 6ghz

#

the iot with internet is split 2.4ghz/5ghz

#

so 5 SSIDs

#

6 if guest is on

last cedar
#

Googling a little leads to be ask... wifi 6e?

brazen fable
#

yes

#

soon to be wifi 7

#

60ghz is for ptp stuff

#

https://mikrotik.com/product/wireless_wire mikrotik sells these kits too which work good

#

more affordable

last cedar
#

I have a wifi 5 ap at the moment, a couple would do all I need to atm!

brazen fable
#

i use powerline adapters too for some of my cameras lol

#

it only puts out like 10-50 mbps but that's more than enough

last cedar
#

Yeah, lots of stuff doesn't need a lot of bandwidth

brazen fable
#

i have 3 zigbee networks and 2 z wave networks

#

so yeah channel management can be annoying

#

luckily none of the high performance stuff relies on 2.4

last cedar
#

Oh heck, now I understand the need for a fariday cage ๐Ÿคฃ

brazen fable
#

indeed

#

it's only because of how limited zigbee controllers are

#

if i shove it on one it doesn't do what I want fast enough

#

with lighting effects

#

strobes etc

#

but with it split up and 3 different controllers issuing commands, its much better

#

I wonder how hard it would be to build a high performance zigbee controller with MIMO

brazen fable
#

anyone else hate the fact that they're trying to push IP/TCP connectivity through thread

#

when the explicit reason i went down the home assistant road in the first place is so my entire automation setup is not internet connected lol

last cedar
#

I mean, for a company like philips or whatever, there are lots of benefits in being able to say "we have a complete solution", so I get why they do it

#

But there shouldn't really be a need for a specific bridge or gateway, z2m is, and zigbee as a whole quite amazing in how flexible and open it is, sure it kinda sucks that it isn't a different frequency to 2.4 wifi thiugh

#

My (zigbee) network isn't meshing so well, everything seems to favor going straight to the coordinator, not that this is a bad thing really, but we have lag on the upper floor (sometimes a couple to 10 seconds) on zigbee commands going to lamps, which is annoyong, but not really thr topic for this channel

Since this is a Home Assistant server, you're unlikely to get much help with those

forest edge

that hoobs thing looks like someone just forked HA and redesigned the front end a little

I totally understand the appeal for such devices even at their outrageous price tags cause so many people just don't want to deal with coding or super complex means of making something work as they believe it should

forest edge

I don't think zigbee networks are that advanced. like wifi how it will hold onto a connection from a node even when that signal becomes shitty and there is another closer node available.

#

I love the 4th comment to that clip.. agree completely

last cedar
#

@forest edge just looking, people in the house use 2.4Ghz headsets and mice, it is probably interference from that

forest edge
#

you running a cyber cafe or something?

#

just how many headsets/mice could you possibly have going lol

#

unless your router is wearing a headset or something, I just don't think interference from such devices is that impacting.. but then I guess if you order from aliexpress like some i could see quality changing the tide

last cedar
#

There are 3 mice and 3 headsets, I have a boat load of those ble temp/ humidity sensors with displays, I have made a fairly dirty 2.4Ghz band I think ๐Ÿคฃ

#

Unsure what channel the wifi is on, as well

forest edge
#

easy way to find out.. turn that shit off and see what happens lol

last cedar

Mmm, exactly, when I think about it, it is certain times of day when it happens, but not every day, so I need to pay more attention to what is on/ off at the time

you could also log (and graph) the LQI for the links you are worried about and check whether you find a correlation of it and your hang/lag

#

you may need to have some automation running that forces devices to send something to get LQI readouts updated though

zigbee routers here are pretty much limited to just smart plugs.. rather annoying
