Never done that

#

We closed a bunch of our offices ww during covid and just made everyone default to WFH, makes no sense to have X offices in every country

#

We only have one left in Norway

#

Saved a lot of money in real estate, and more happy workers

prisma briar
#

The location I was at was set up more as a call center for our support team than an administrative office, I moved up from that position to where I'm at now so I ended up at the office that nobody else on my team was really in.

#

It didn't really have enough space/offices to have full teams outside of the support team

#

We're phasing out our buildings too, everyone who doesn't manage physical infrastructure is WFH now

#

Seems to be a common trend

clear ferry
#

Makes sense

#

Forcing people into the office seems to be happening a lot in the US

#

Based on Reddit threads

#

Norway as a whole has embraced WFH in all sectors

prisma briar
#

Only people with something to bitch about make Reddit threads like that, nobody makes/upvotes the 'Woo, we're all WFH now' threads.

#

Makes issues look larger than they are.

#

My dad had been WFH for 15 years before he retired last year.

clear ferry
#

We've had WFH for sure, but it is now the default with at least 50% for all sectors

#

People won't accept a job without it

prisma briar
#

I don't think we're anywhere near that, but it's enough that people are starting to question what all the empty buildings are going to do going forward.

clear ferry
#

Even military does WFH now

clear ferry
prisma briar
#

I could only see myself taking a non-WFH position if it was really interesting

clear ferry
#

I get like 3-4 job offers a month the last 12 month, i state my top demand is at least 90% WFH

#

And that isn't the demand they have an issue fulfilling

night zodiac
#

They never like the clause about M&Ms

prisma briar
#

late gate
#

WFH is the best. I love being in software development as it’s easy to work from home and its a screaming need for developers pushing salaries high

finite atlas
#

@prisma briar have you tried that yet?

prisma briar
#

No, just finished up with work

#

Can try now though

#

Showing 200W between two monitors, two lamps, 10Gb switch, and server before

#

Basically the same after setting that

finite atlas
#

both?

prisma briar
#

Just the governor right now, trying the other one

#

Yea, no change after either

finite atlas
#

):

#

it cut down my power draw significantly
cpu governor went from 32W to 15W
added 5 HDD's and went from 15W to 25W
powertop made it go down to 22W
upgrading the kernel from 5.15 to 6.1 made it go up to 25W again ):

prisma briar
#

~120w for the server is still way better than three servers on at ~120w

#

so I'm still way down, lol

finite atlas
#

upgrading to something newer certainly wont hurt the powerdraw aswell and could bring long term savings

prisma briar
#

All I need is a CPU to throw together an x570 build that'd do it, I bet that'd be lower draw

finite atlas
#

In the country with one of the highest power prices, germany with 55c per kWh, 100W less power draw would save 482€ a year.

prisma briar
#

jfc, $0.55/kWh is absurd. My rate is like $0.09/kWh.

#

I'm in one of the cheaper areas of the US

finite atlas
#

welcome to germany

prisma briar
#

Honestly I was more worried about the SSD wear that my Ceph setup was causing than the power draw. I was going to start having SSDs drop soon and I didn't want to pay to replace them.

#

And Ceph's performance without SSD caching is not great

finite atlas
#

go for zfs

prisma briar
#

I was only using Ceph because it was nice to have a learning environment for it

#

I manage it at work

finite atlas
#

oh yeah, then it sure makes sense

prisma briar
#

But Ceph adds a lot of additional wear on drives and I was burning my own hardware when I had perfectly fine dev labs at work I could use.

finite atlas
#

just dont use ssd caching at home

prisma briar
#

Then performance takes a hard hit, to the point of unusability

finite atlas
#

zfs luckily has persistent l2arc cache

prisma briar
#

I didn't have enough OSDs to distribute the load enough. I went for small numbers of large disks.

#

So without SSDs caching it was really really slow

#

Even with SSD caching it wasn't exactly a top performer. There's a pretty steep performance penalty for that level of flexibility.

finite atlas
#

ram "ssd" caching?

prisma briar
#

The general rule of thumb I see is expect the drive performance to lower by one class, NVMe in a Ceph cluster will perform like an SSD to the clients, an SSD setup will perform like HDDs, an HDD only setup will perform like ass.

finite atlas
#

HDD will perform like a cheapo thumb drive

prisma briar
#

Ceph's cache will pull active PGs off of the spinner and put them on SSDs until they get stale and pushed back to the lower tier storage

#

I also had the journals/WALs for the OSDs stored on SSDs which meant that I needed one SSD per physical spinning drive to not lower redundancy

finite atlas
#

Can Ceph performe in a el cheapo torrent style of way?
Everyone has their own little pc and drive at home, sharing and caring cat images with each other.

prisma briar
#

I had all of my SSDs partitioned with 100GB for OSD journaling and the rest as part of an SSD pool, then I configured my main pool to use the SSD pool as a caching tier

#

Ceph is closer to a filesystem layer than a file sharing service

#

You could stack an object server and web server on top of it and use it to store cat pictures, or create a volume and mount it on a host, or use something like CephFS to make a shared filesystem mounted on multiple hosts

finite atlas
#

poopoo

#

I had hoped, that it would allow me to create a distributed across multiple friends home connection file server, to collectively save cat memes.

prisma briar
#

You can do things like site to site replication with Ceph where one instance will mirror another over the internet, but I don't think it'd work well over a residential connection and I've only ever done it in primary->secondary syncing configurations, never multi-primary. You could also just add them to the same Ceph instance but performance would be beyond abysmal.

finite atlas
#

I would have liked a Raid5 like file server. Everyone has their own drive at home, contributing to redundancy, download speed and storage capability all to each other.

prisma briar
#

There was some experimental system that tried to be like that years ago, I can't remember what it was called.

#

It never took off
