people abuse it

umbral cliff

They really don't

forest edge
#

they really do

umbral cliff

The rule of thumb is nothing over 3 hours, and not many times in a single week unless you provide proof. Not hard and fast rules for it

forest edge
#

those systems were put in long ago for a reason

#

3 hours?

umbral cliff
clear ferry
#

The abuse level is so low, and we have had the system for 5 decades

umbral cliff
forest edge
#

when people here go to the doctor they generally either take the whole day or several hours

clear ferry
#

Capitalism wants to squash workers though

umbral cliff
#

You don't need several hours for a doctor, 30 minute appointment and 20 minutes commute at most

forest edge
#

short visits generally are done on a extended lunch break

umbral cliff
#

Fuck wasting my lunch break on that

If I need a doctor i go when I feel like it, noone cares as long as I do my job

umbral cliff
clear ferry
#

I've used 8 days of sick leave in 15 years, damn I'm abusing the system

umbral cliff
forest edge
#

if someone has an established condition then there are things put in place to address that. but a 16 year taking sick days every friday of the month is a little suspicious

Workers rights are good for an employee. But doesn't stop an employer from letting an employee go if they're not doing their job

I'd like to point out that nearly every other country actually looks after workers and is much more productive than the US.

forest edge
keen bridge

Maybe, maybe not. But coughing and sneezing over them is not going to make them well. Let alone projectile vomiting.

clear ferry
keen bridge
#

And the number of mistakes you make that then have to be corrected is ridiculous.

forest edge
#

but that wasn't always the case

clear ferry
#

Probably the main reason we don't have Amazon in Norway, we have worker rights

keen bridge
#

Workers are also better off monetarily. Not being bankrupted by a simple visit to the doctor or the hospital is ace.

forest edge
#

isn't ikea the same thing?

lol

#

I truely hope something blows up here to maybe put things back on track

#

but i fear it will get worse before it gets any better

keen bridge
#

I broke my ankle in 3 places and fractured my wrist a few years ago. I was off work for 6 weeks, then 2 more at 50%, and then back. I think I paid €10 or something for all of my hospital visits.

#

And I got full pay the whole time.

forest edge
#

at work?

#

if you get injured at work workman's comp pays for it all, including your leave

#

if you fall off your apt balcony before going to work then you are sol

keen bridge

Nope. I broke my ankle on holiday.

clear ferry
#

One of my colleagues lost his drivers licence for 6 months for speeding, at the time we were 90% at customer sites, no worries, just ride with colleagues for 6 months

glacial knot
#

breaking the ankle at work is preferable. Gets the employer's insurance on the hook for a bunch of fun

forest edge
#

older american's believe in work ethic. I can't speak for states like california or anything but here people loved thier jobs, efficiency and quality and pride all mattered very much. as tech grew though manual labor shrinked and somewhere in there people got lazy imo

keen bridge
#

There's work ethic and "I have to work even though I really shouldn't be working". The first is fine, the second is not.

#

Perfection

forest edge
#

a cough never stopped someone from wanting to work, but these days a sniffle makes someone want to call out the whole week

#

what i hate is the reality that fewer people want to get into manual intensive type jobs. there are less people wanting to be plumbers or carpenters or even mechanics then there are people retiring from those positions

#

soon you'll have to buy a new car just because there won't be anyone around to fix anything that breaks.. well unless the whole world dives deep into robotics lol

glacial knot
#

pay me within 50% of what I'm paid for ass on chair and I'll do carpentry and general wood working tomorrow
I like both, but one gets me well off as average guy, the other only at the far top in the field

keen bridge
#

Having to deal directly with the entitled public who won't accept "the part for that will take a week to get and a day to fix", or who don't show up when they should, or who complain about the bill. I can't imagine why people don't want to work a physically draining job with that as the cherry on top πŸ˜‚

forest edge
#

how does having the oil changed in your car equal to a months pay? that sound peachy to anyone?

clear ferry

Pretty sure there are wood workers who make more then me

Or labour people overall

forest edge

not sure

clear ferry

After all they tried to charge me $5000 for service on my A8L

forest edge

For the airline industry they're stuck using Amadeus or sabre for booking systems. They're ancient and held together with duct tape. Whenever shit hits the fan, it's usually because of one of those systems failing
There are no drop in replacements and no one wants to spend the money (especially with many airlines using the same systems it makes bookings, changes, etc far easier to manage)

I've bought two devices recently with upside-down USB A ports. What's up with that?

I know about the jokes with turning things over twice before they fit and all, but IT'S SO INCREDIBLY WRONG

And the SSH auth we use at work needs it plugged in

But I ended up hitting some roadblocks that meant I was going to have a convoluted solution with some self-compiled libraries to get the Yubikey to work with Termux.

And just didn't ever bother submitting it for approval

it's seperate but yea

rapid plinth

There's an annual registration but it's based purely on the class of vehicle and whether it's a hybrid/EV

#

because I guess Prius owners don't buy enough gas to pay their fair share of taxes for the road

#

so their registration is $150USD more than for, say, a diesel truck weighing twice as much

umbral cliff

They're going to change the rego system to be emission standards in the future eventually. So only EV will be free, followed by hybrids costing some, then ICE going up from there

forest edge

wouldn't they have to tax them more to deal with the offset of the extra damage they cause to the roads?

#

stuff dosen't get cheaper.. just always more expensive

No because the lesser impact to the environment is worth it

glacial knot
#

because it's not curl πŸ˜‚ And wow, that default alias is ridiculous

dusky plank
glacial knot
#

default aliasing a well known command onto a lacking builtin is just stupid

polar dagger
#

even if there is a problem you can use linux curl in wsl

#

bla bla bla bad windows

glacial knot
#

you can even use curl on windows

dusky plank
#

I never said otherwise

forest edge
#

i can click that faster than you can type it

#

and i'm slow

#

people keep thinking cli is easier, faster but what it really means is those people haven't figured out how to ui yet lol

umbral cliff
#

I run one single command to update all my docker containers across all my servers. It takes me about 5 seconds to type it

#

Then let it run

forest edge
#

and what if you want to leave some containers out?

umbral cliff
#

update-docker (tab at update-) and then enter

glacial knot
#

don't worry about poeople that seriously try to say that UI is faster than composible cli

polar dagger
#

in unraid ui its also just a click

umbral cliff
forest edge
umbral cliff
#

Nah I just only update when I need to

#

Otherwise its a docker pull for what I need

#

I should make a script let me select lol

forest edge
#

or just use ui and presto

polar dagger
#

hrhr

forest edge

forest edge
#

#

polar dagger
#

thats a bigger thing that needs a bigger ui. i just speak for my homeserver with several dockers. my point was: it is easier with a ui than cli

forest edge
#

lol

dusky plank
#

You all nasty

glacial knot
finite atlas
forest edge
shrewd veldt
#

πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ

glacial knot
#

yea, GUI is better for discoverability

forest edge
#

it's better for almost everything

glacial knot
#

I'm personally a big fan of applications that have both. And can export the graphical clicky config into a cmdline for scripting

forest edge
#

just checked out that marlin web firmware builder.. so neat what people can do

glacial knot
#

with google cloud it's:
console(web-ui) to discover and figure out things
gcloud (cmdline) to document and script things

glacial knot
umbral cliff
umbral cliff
forest edge
#

wait to load? just how bad is your local network?

umbral cliff
#

Its slower than opening a terminal

#

Thats instant

forest edge
#

you can not only do just that, but you can add other functions as well so you could have 1 page that does it all

#

even for shit that isn't remotely related if you wanted

glacial knot
#

hey, my .zshrc takes around 100ms on the corpa vm

dusky plank
#

prime example would be a OS upgrade

glacial knot
#

most of that is a request to our auth server to check if I need to renew tickets

forest edge
#

click one button to update your servers and another to see atx dancing with a thong gif

dusky plank
#

want to click the settings menus in windows or just stubmit 2 commands? (or heck, 1)

glacial knot
#

on modern windows you just reboot and it's integrated o.0

dusky plank
#

haven't touched that garbage in 10 years

forest edge
#

win11 was gross, but it's growing on me now

glacial knot
#

my current example would be photoprism import. Sure, it could be a feature in photoprism
But with composible cli, I can just do an inotifywait -r $importdir -e close_exec ; photoprism import
With gui I'd have to check if something changed and then find the import button in another UI

#

oh, and the composibility allows me to wrap the command in a while true (my real command is inotifywait -mr | while read file)

polar dagger
#

some kind of masochistic to use cli for all easy shit you can do^^

glacial knot
#

I use what's convenient to me. Which is 80% cli. I could write more GUIs for the stupid stuff I do. But ssh composes well πŸ™‚

dusky plank
#

i want photoprism to use my coral 🀬

glacial knot
#

I think there's some WIP PR around?

dusky plank

none working afaik

glacial knot
#

which reminds me, I wanted to see if I can get my hands on a coral

forest edge
umbral cliff
#

I dual boot windows and popOS. Windows terminal is a PITA, but windows supports scaling far better than linux. Overall linux is my go to now, but windows there if I need it

forest edge
#

something that started out around 60 bucks is now like 160

#

is mint not popular anymore?

umbral cliff
#

I know one person who runs it

#

So probably not as much

forest edge
#

thats the problem with linux

#

no unity

#

I have a friend who changes OS's like it's shoes

umbral cliff

#

oh wait

umbral cliff
forest edge
#

as well as headaches and lack of support and the list goes on and on and on lol

umbral cliff
#

I don't have any lack of support

umbral cliff
#

Only issue is just programs being weird with scaling, which windows had until around 2018 I think?

clear ferry
#

I just don't scale anything tbh

forest edge
#

scaling? no idea wtf you are actually refering to

clear ferry
#

Except terminal on 4k resolution

glacial knot
#

do you actually enable scaling on them, or just font size?

umbral cliff
clear ferry
#

Just font size tbh

#

Yeah, i hate the windows scaling by default

#

Always set it to 100

forest edge
umbral cliff
#

Yes because 100% is too small

umbral cliff
forest edge
#

I can honestly say since my time on windows (since 3.1) i cannot recall one time that being an issue

clear ferry
#

I have very good eyesight to be considered half blind

#

I enjoy triple 4k monitors

forest edge
#

but as far as i know scaling has always been in the settings

umbral cliff
forest edge
#

was on a 2k monitor for a few weeks

#

but yea, mostly 1080

#

for gaming

umbral cliff
#

Yeah 1080p doesn't need scaling

clear ferry
#

1080 today is 320x240 of old

forest edge
#

I mean yea.. but no

umbral cliff
clear ferry
#

640x480?

umbral cliff
#

Since 1440p is a decent enough standard, with 4k being a bit too much

umbral cliff
clear ferry
#

I wish I had 3x8k tbh

forest edge
#

with monitor advancement 1080 is still the primo

#

for gaming

#

maybe not for watching movies

umbral cliff
#

1440p is the best in my opinion. Works great for a working display + gaming + youtube

glacial knot
#

eh, 4k on laptops is mostly fluff, but it's nice on 30"+ displays

forest edge
forest edge
#

never ran the ufo test?

umbral cliff
#

Yeah, no blurring on my display

#

High res doesn't mean blurring

forest edge
#

what type of panel?

glacial knot
#

forced scaling for legacy GUI can force blurryness because it's done on pixels

umbral cliff
glacial knot
#

you know, because GUI doesn't compose and hacks are horrible πŸ˜‚

clear ferry
#

I hate whenever I come to a dock with a 1080 monitor

glacial knot
#

X11 does support scaling, the way it's plumbed through Xwayland is a bit dumb though

umbral cliff
#

Its blurry for discord on linux for me. Because its running on x11 and doesn't support anything but 100 ro 200

#

*or

glacial knot
#

win32 applications that didn't get updated get that treatment on windows. It looks like ass

forest edge
#

pretty sure it's the panel

glacial knot
#

for some time that was even the old settings windows of windows itself πŸ˜‚

forest edge
#

even those high priced odessys blur

clear ferry
#

何

forest edge
#

some people can't see it though

#

I can

umbral cliff
# forest edge what type of panel?

Can't remember. But its a nice gaming monitor. Not terribly expensive but it doesn't blur. Not as much as my old samsung 1080p monitor did anyway lol

forest edge
#

smear/blur whatever they call.. ghosting

umbral cliff
#

Yes I know what you meant

#

Better results for me on 1440p than 1080p

forest edge
#

need to find what type fo panel.. cause i have never heard of ghhosting on a lower resolution vs higher

umbral cliff
#

Maybe I just had a shitty 1080p panel

forest edge
#

probably

#

I just went through all of this over black friday cause I really did like that 2k.. but the ghosting drove me nuts lol

#

I settled on a smaller panel running 1080 cause it's something that is still done right

#

i never even heard of this lol https://youtu.be/PVrm8hkNT38

Long lead time for everything too

#

Saw an article about a guy that waited over a year for parts, still haven't gotten it

#

Tesla refuses to use spare parts from used cars too which is great

#

Even more fun in Norway, since EVs are tax free but replacement parts aren't, a lot of cars get totalled for small repairable damage

Well, yes, a lot of people buy totalled EVs

VW already got a full palette of EVs stretched over VW, Audi and Porsche

last cedar
#

It wouldn't hurt tesla to have vw reliability though

#

Going from 0% durability to 1% durability would be a huge increase

finite atlas
#

the main issue with tesla is the false promises made my musket and the assembly quality

#

while vw makes falses promises aswell, they make fewer and the assembly quality is a lot higher

#
  • vw currents ev vehicles are either shoeboxes on wheels or very pricey

The "I tried to open the door and the handle came off" problems need fixing at Tesla

last cedar
#

I hate to say it but I almost dare say that Kia/ Hyundai are the leaders in evs at the moment, seems like although they are all catching on fire, none of the other evs are immune either

#

People seem to love the ioniq 5 is it called? And the EV6

#

As long as we are getting innovation, it is all good, energy density needs to improve though, obviously

finite atlas
#

efficiency needs to improve aswell

#

which is where tesla leads

last cedar
#

Would be nice if you didn't need cobalt and copper from child labour in Africa too :/

#

Honestly I haven't compared efficiency between EVs, I should at some point

finite atlas
#

just look up real world kWh/100km consumption, there are many websites where people can keep track of their statistics publicly

Trying to get in and out of a Tesla makes me feel dumb every time

One person counts twice as well actually, because it happened in two different Teslas (in two countries no less)

"Ah yes my $100,000 car that I cannot get into because the door handles came off"

Well, these were "couldn't get out of" πŸ˜›

The doors seem unnecessarily over engineered, apparently badly

See the no stalks, so to change wiper settings you fiddle on the screen

Whilst in rain

Or this abomination where the indicators are capacitive buttons on the wheel

I had to move over and stare at the door of my Uber for a minute to figure out how to get out

#

It was a button 🀷

finite atlas

#

See I thought BMW was unnecessarily complex where if the car door is locked it takes two handle pulls to open it (one to unlock, another to open)
Then tesla goes nah fuck this

I wonder if anyone will remember that this whole kick start to EV's is because of tesla though

3d printing is such a pain.. you fiddle and get everything just right and 90% of your first layers stick just fine then all out nowhere some asshat small section is like, Nope! don't wanna stick, no reason other than to piss you off

Sounds like a draft, an improperly levelled print bed, or a dirty print bed. Or incorrect use of supports.

My Dad once told a blond joke in an office about how you can tell when a blond has been using your word processor - white out on the screen. Everyone in said office became very quiet. The manager explained she just fired someone 2 weeks prior for doing that.

We didn’t feel it was appropriate to ask if the person was blond.
