They really don't
they really do
The rule of thumb is nothing over 3 hours, and not many times in a single week unless you provide proof. Not hard and fast rules for it
This system was put in place 5 years ago and found to boost morale
The abuse level is so low, and we have had the system for 5 decades
Covers most medical appointments
when people here go to the doctor they generally either take the whole day or several hours
Capitalism wants to squash workers though
You don't need several hours for a doctor, 30 minute appointment and 20 minutes commute at most
short visits generally are done on a extended lunch break
Fuck wasting my lunch break on that
exactly, but since employers don't require a dr's note it's he said she said
Americans think the workers are always out to exploit what they're given
I'm amazed you have a difference. Only makes sense when there's a limit D:
If I need a doctor i go when I feel like it, noone cares as long as I do my job
not just american's
I personally don't care about sick leave, never use it (probably will end up using it as carers leave instead) but for people who get sick often the slow acrewal sucks
I've used 8 days of sick leave in 15 years, damn I'm abusing the system
Previous project was like that. This project the management clock watch half the time
if someone has an established condition then there are things put in place to address that. but a 16 year taking sick days every friday of the month is a little suspicious
acrew? π implies a set limit
I know someone who's used all their sick leave this year just because they're constantly sick
jobs don't prevent people from going to the dr
sick days are paid days, nothing stops a person from taking a non paid day
Yeah there's a base amount you earn each year acrewing. As mentioned is fine if you don't use it often. Not fine otherwise
They certainly are a barrier given both of them only operate during business hours usually
Having the ability to still get paid whilst going is great. Given employees health is directly related to how well they can work
Imagine, getting paid to go to the doctor's
well there is a flip side to that coin
And to take days off work
imagine an employee who dosen't ever work cause they are always sick
They are extending our wellness Fridays to be one Friday per month now instead of every other month
I would hate being a supervisor/manager during these times
Then that would show in their performance review. And if they can't keep up with job requirements the employer should see if they can help. Otherwise let them go
the crap i see on youtube scares the hell out of me on how people think anymore
Because you have to be inclusive and nice to people? And not just say "oh sorry you didn't get this done, therefore I won't pay you"
that comes apparent pretty quickly, usually before one eats up all thier sick days
nice and bending over and offering lube is two diffrent things
Nice!
We don't have that, but when I turned up to work and was just brain dead my boss told me to take the day off and not worry about it which was more or less the same thing.
Workers rights are good for an employee. But doesn't stop an employer from letting an employee go if they're not doing their job
Imagine not having to kill yourself trying to work and infecting all your colleagues because you're so ill
that's a joke right? have you not seen the shit that goes on out there for the past few years?
I'd like to point out that nearly every other country actually looks after workers and is much more productive than the US.
the sad reality there is, you already infected all your fellow coworkers before you even knew you were sick
Maybe, maybe not. But coughing and sneezing over them is not going to make them well. Let alone projectile vomiting.
Yeah we just do that on top of everything else
And the number of mistakes you make that then have to be corrected is ridiculous.
these days, yes I agree more productive than us.. what ever happened over the past decade or so really shifted everything
but that wasn't always the case
Probably the main reason we don't have Amazon in Norway, we have worker rights
Workers are also better off monetarily. Not being bankrupted by a simple visit to the doctor or the hospital is ace.
isn't ikea the same thing?
lol
I truely hope something blows up here to maybe put things back on track
but i fear it will get worse before it gets any better
I broke my ankle in 3 places and fractured my wrist a few years ago. I was off work for 6 weeks, then 2 more at 50%, and then back. I think I paid β¬10 or something for all of my hospital visits.
And I got full pay the whole time.
at work?
if you get injured at work workman's comp pays for it all, including your leave
if you fall off your apt balcony before going to work then you are sol
Nope. I broke my ankle on holiday.
One of my colleagues lost his drivers licence for 6 months for speeding, at the time we were 90% at customer sites, no worries, just ride with colleagues for 6 months
breaking the ankle at work is preferable. Gets the employer's insurance on the hook for a bunch of fun
older american's believe in work ethic. I can't speak for states like california or anything but here people loved thier jobs, efficiency and quality and pride all mattered very much. as tech grew though manual labor shrinked and somewhere in there people got lazy imo
There's work ethic and "I have to work even though I really shouldn't be working". The first is fine, the second is not.
damnit, I was waiting for a command to finish and I failed to start it π¦
Digital edging
I like it
luckily it's just the corpa laptop doing corpa tasks π
the "reasons" for that "I really shouldn't be working" is the issue.
I try to work from home when sick, and go lie down when I feel like it π€·
Exactly
where "sick" is a cold with a headache
anything worse, and I get more days at 10% performance out of trying to force work
a cough never stopped someone from wanting to work, but these days a sniffle makes someone want to call out the whole week
what i hate is the reality that fewer people want to get into manual intensive type jobs. there are less people wanting to be plumbers or carpenters or even mechanics then there are people retiring from those positions
soon you'll have to buy a new car just because there won't be anyone around to fix anything that breaks.. well unless the whole world dives deep into robotics lol
pay me within 50% of what I'm paid for ass on chair and I'll do carpentry and general wood working tomorrow
I like both, but one gets me well off as average guy, the other only at the far top in the field
Having to deal directly with the entitled public who won't accept "the part for that will take a week to get and a day to fix", or who don't show up when they should, or who complain about the bill. I can't imagine why people don't want to work a physically draining job with that as the cherry on top π
not possible because if that were the case, noone could ever afford you
how does having the oil changed in your car equal to a months pay? that sound peachy to anyone?
master carpenters.. maybe
not sure
After all they tried to charge me $5000 for service on my A8L
talking about people who make inlays etc by hand, not with a machine
there certainly are. But they will be in a higher percentile in their field
and while I'm good at what I do, I know that depression and general anxiety issues will make it very hard to move into top percentiles
I could double my income probably, but I don't want to work more and have to deal with people
do you know the feeling when you can't find the stupid terminal some task runs in? I shouldn't use the IDE integrated one to run VMs π
The kids got a board game for Christmas that has a section where you have to whisper. Genius!
... except when they finish that section they compensate...
sounds like a nice game to me
uh yes! which one?
Antibabypilleschpiel
Thats my favorite game. I'm going for the highscore in February.
@clear ferry I canceled the Octavia today
Sick of waiting and lack of info. Going to be a lot of fallout though haha
do it
Will probably be better quality than the VW bits
Even in PLA
I'll print it in 0.30 and it will still hold better then a tesla
More than likely
Going to be so pissed though, it has gone 2 years over lease already and like 60k km haha
Not my problem though thankfully
anyone have a recommendation for a lightweight linux distro to turn a raspberry pi into an HA kiosk?
i have a pi zero and a touchscreen that i wanna tape the pi behind but the pi obviously lacks a lot of power and i feel raspbian may be too heavy
true
So the new DJI Mini 3 is apparently out. How have we reached a timeline where vertical video is not only acceptable, but the main selling point for a new camera system. I hate it.
Just like you! β€οΈ

I wonder if there's a VR HA interface
So I could walk through my house in VR and turn on/off lights or something
Why would you want that? π€
For the time being, the floor plan card might serve as a 2d stand in
if i walk into your house and see you with that, i'll be amused but will then absolutely bully you for it
imo, a smart home has to be so smart you forget you smartyfied it
There are some VR implementations of real world in unreal engine iirc. Maybe you can integrate HA into it
lights just turn on/off where they're needed, blinds open-close based on time of day / what you're doing, ventilation adjusts based on CO2 and/or TVOC etc
Too ez
hah, if that was easy smart homes would be the norm π
it's easy-ish for me, as I live on my own
but even then, something like presence detection is already difficult
most fool-proof way currently imo is facial-detection or other "human detection" camera based stuff
but that's.... not cheap
microwave sensors are also interesting
Great for detecting if you are coming towards or away from it, and keeping you warm if something goes wrong. What is there not to like?
Were you thinking the blinds would close if you were running around naked at home?
Lol, that's an option
was thinking more like, if you start playing a movie on the TV and the sun-angle is XYZ, close the blinds
I have a shower button which plays music in the bathroom, but it also closes some curtains/blinds to avoid letting people see in π
alpine linux is as much lightweight as you can reasonably get
weird, i have the same one but instead it opens all the curtains / blinds.
my neighbors haven't talked to me in months!
three double-shot espressos in an hour wasn't my greatest idea
β¨Tiktokβ¨
We do that using humidity. When enough humidity is there lights dim (since we shower at night), and blind closes
Handy
we shower at night? That's news to me
morning showers all the way, or I'd have the wildest bed hair xD
By we I mean my partner and I lol
But yeah it's great. Get into bed all clean
Means more sleep too before work the next day
Sounds great π
I'd have to re-wash my hair in the morning if I didn't want it working as a sun-dial π
Luckily all mine needs is a quick comb and I'm done π (advantage of being a guy with short hair lol)
I have very colourful hair, washing it daily is a recipe for sadness. But washing my hair daily is a recipe for not greatness anyway. And waiting for the humidity to rise takes a bit too long for things to kick in for me. But I should look at it as a backup.
I have mine set so if there's high humidity it turns on the exhaust fan and doesn't automatically power the lights down after a few minutes.
Novelty and amusement? lol
I was considering some actually useful ideas like having my setup automatically lower my room temperature or turn on a fan when I'm playing VR and thought of that.
Hmm, I wonder if I could get wind speed out of VR games and make it control a fan
I want to try one of those treadmills
I don't think I'd want to own one but it'd be fun to try.
I know a guy with one of those. He... never put it together.
Anyone have any opinions on the catalogue for higher tier Ps Plus vs Amazon Luna+ ?
Ask him if I can have it
Have to scope out potential doormat stealing locations
you've come to provide food and filament you say?
I should buy joking hazard to have on my desk just to make small stories during meetings
I dunno, you seem rather touchy anymore. not sure that type of humor wouldn't just offend you lol
I'm pretty sure it's a thing for racing games. I've seen people install fan ducts to their rigs so I assume that's what it's for
Anytime people try to blame IT, IT usually have plenty of proof for "yeah, so we tried to upgrade you and you refused to give us the money for it"
I have quite a few customers still running COBOL stuff
Which is hilarious, since they have to call 85 year old people to fix it when it breaks
Hehe, I considered learning COBOL
I'm not surprised Rose-My
It's the sort of thing I'd do
But I already have job security, and I like being able to say "get someone else" π
Just like me who is the only one who does 15 products in country, i have enough job security currently, dont need to learn a dead language
γγγγ
Damn, someone sat a box on my AC remote control yesterday and now it's really cold in here.
Going to make an automation to force that off if it gets turned on
Take the batteries out of the remote? π
An automation would cover all means of controlling it
It's already connected to HA, I just need to add an automation to turn it off when cold gets turned on.
Reminds me of when I needed to write a cronjob to run NTP every 5 seconds
When running Debian on a quad socket Pentium 3
wouldn't a high time skew influence cron?
It worked
The clock did like 5 minutes per one minute
So basically it would trigger Cron even more often tbh

amazing. Should have done 25 minutes just so it races against kerberos
For the airline industry they're stuck using Amadeus or sabre for booking systems. They're ancient and held together with duct tape. Whenever shit hits the fan, it's usually because of one of those systems failing
There are no drop in replacements and no one wants to spend the money (especially with many airlines using the same systems it makes bookings, changes, etc far easier to manage)
and they still don't do it well π¦
Yup. It's both astounding and totally expected π€ͺ
Best part is your passport details get stored in your Amadeus booking record (unsure about sabre) which is not encrypted and is protected just by your last name and booking reference
As what happened right here: https://mango.pdf.zone/finding-former-australian-prime-minister-tony-abbotts-passport-number-on-instagram
(great read btw)
I've bought two devices recently with upside-down USB A ports. What's up with that?
I know about the jokes with turning things over twice before they fit and all, but IT'S SO INCREDIBLY WRONG
You know those pictures of faces with the eyes and mouth upside down? It's like that.
Also makes my yubikey impossible to use, obviously.
USB C Yubikey solves that, with a USB A to C adapter
Yeah, because that sounds like something I'd want hanging from my keychain.
Just switch to a USB C Yubikey then... and wait 5 years for all the rest of the kit to be upgraded
I've got a USB-C Yubikey, it's really touchy and disconnects from my thinkpad with the slightest vibration.. I ended up going back to my USB-A one.
I bought two. One mysteriously just stopped working. My much older USB A one has never let me down...
I've got two A's from work and a C and an A that are mine that I got with their CloudFlare promo a couple months ago.
The C one won't fit in my phone unless I take my case off and is unreliable on my laptop so I basically don't use that one
The NFC version is nice, if expensive
That's the one I've got. I'd say that's the only one that's actually useable with an iphone.
I got the C one because I had plans of setting up a secure environment with Knox on my phone and submitting it to work to get approved so I'd only need my phone with me while on call
And the SSH auth we use at work needs it plugged in
But I ended up hitting some roadblocks that meant I was going to have a convoluted solution with some self-compiled libraries to get the Yubikey to work with Termux.
And just didn't ever bother submitting it for approval
I've got the USB C + NFC yubikey, has suffered abuse on my keychain and is still my primary yubikey. Works fine for my phone, laptop, ipad, nfc stuff, etc
How does the cloudflare promo work, I went into the zero trust dashboard yesterday and clicked the link but I haven't received a link yet
From what I heard it can take quite a while. Apparently they got quite the backlog due to unexpectedly large interest.
I thought it would be an automated process given its cloudlfare lol
Yea, that was what I did. They e-mailed me a link and I ordered 6 of them, two for myself and some for friends/family. I think they lowered the number you can order though, it was 10 when I did it.
I signed up like the first day it started, we'd been tracking it in Slack at work beforehand.
I think it took a few hours for me to get the e-mail with the link to buy them
Given the time of year I've chosen to request it, I probably will need to wait lol
Took a couple of days for mine to show up - you prompted me to check π
Last mail I got said delivery January
is there a way to connect a r pi 2 with a screen to my main home assistant server to act as a control panel
home assistant is headless. the only UI access is through browser which in that regard you can access from anything that has a browser
dosen't need to be directly connected to the server, just connected to the network
Is there such a thing as a security camera that screws into a light socket?
I'm proud I just got this to work. Had like 20 separate automations for each button type. Now it's all in one per scene controller. Learned templates
209 lines for my living room scene controller automation
then you learned you could do all of that with just 4 lines of code
Do you not have events for "button 1 single press" or similar? I'll grant all my buttons are #zigbee-archived and I use Z2M so I get to cheat with an action sensor to listen to, but the templates seem... extreme
I have 12 different key buttons on my scene controller set, 5 buttons can do 1-4 clicks and even hold
This scene controller is zwave
There was no way to do that like my zigbee buttons. It's a device and doesn't have any entities for the buttons
Only values
If I do condition, there's nothing related to the type of trigger for the scene controller. And I didn't want to make 30 trigger IDs so I just got the data manually with 1 trigger per button
Fun. Did you look to see if there's a blueprint? https://community.home-assistant.io/c/blueprints-exchange/
I did but there wasn't one for mine
This is what I'm using: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09B6S4TSL
I think I found one, https://community.home-assistant.io/t/zen32-scene-controller-z-wave-js/292610
Just got one of these installed and couldnβt find a blueprint on the exchange. Hopefully this saves someone a little time. EDIT: Replaced with updates/improvements @blhoward2 made blueprint: name: ZEN32 (Z-Wave JS) description: Create automations for the Zooz ZEN32 switch using the Z-Wave JS integration. domain: automation input: ...
Oh well, I learned the backend of this blueprint. Same thing just a bit more complicated
Yea, that blueprint worked right away lol
i've seen some ugly cars in my time but I glad I never knew (till now) this one existed
looks like a cross between the pope mobile and a minivan
man that took you a long time
cars exclusively sold in in other countries don't exactly come across us American's unless we go looking for them
you certainly missed plenty good cars
like what?
google CityEL or Audi A2
lol yea that kind of stuff would feature on something making fun of other countries, not in the general flow of information
the audi a2 looks "funny", but its a pretty great car besides the looks
fully aluminium, audi brand quality, very fuel efficient and a variety of durable engines
there is even one version that gets you around at 3L/100km (78 US MPG), keep in mind that car was produced in 2002
or Smart for two and Smart for four, look them up :D
1958 Fiat 600 Multipla Mirafiori is interesting aswell
fart balls
I have seen a couple, but there is a huge diffrence in taste beween the two sides of the pond
those smart cars didn't even last
without fail around here people called them roller skates
people see them as death traps
I've seen enough in the red and yellow "little tykes" paint scheme complete with B-pillar badges that I'm convinced that was either a factory option or some paint shop was offering it as a service
their chassis is pretty stiff, but its made for the european market, where the average car does not weight >2 metric tons
it got a b-pillar badge, it must be fΓ€st!
BMW C1 is nice aswell
an interesting case study in ugly cars: "ZE0" aka 1st gen Nissan Leaf is just... fugly. "ZE1" aka 2nd gen looks like a taller, two-tone hatchback Altima, very generic
i'd prefer the 1st gen over the 2nd gen, when only taking looks into consideration
Smart cars didn't sell well in Australia either. But hatchbacks are still very common. Again due to the not gigantic cars on the road
Hell state I'm in doesn't even have a registration cost for private vehicles over 2500kg
(annual registration/ road tax is based on weight of car here)
probably better than engine size in germany
Weight actually makes an impact on condition of the roads lol
But to encourage EVs rego is free for them
lol yet ev's weigh the most
i dunno. my personal property taxes went up 60 bucks this year cause my old 2006 truck gained so much in value lol
too bad many EV's i see on our roads are still giant boxes :|
Your property taxes include your vehicle?
Here property taxes are only on real estate
it's seperate but yea
There's an annual registration but it's based purely on the class of vehicle and whether it's a hybrid/EV
because I guess Prius owners don't buy enough gas to pay their fair share of taxes for the road
so their registration is $150USD more than for, say, a diesel truck weighing twice as much
Once you have enough EVs you can start taxing them the same. But reduce the tax to promote purchasing and then the cycle with start
They're going to change the rego system to be emission standards in the future eventually. So only EV will be free, followed by hybrids costing some, then ICE going up from there
wouldn't they have to tax them more to deal with the offset of the extra damage they cause to the roads?
stuff dosen't get cheaper.. just always more expensive
No because the lesser impact to the environment is worth it
Plus long before EVs they basically gave up with caring for the roads
thats not how it works lol
just increase it for ICE cars, problem solved
but many ev's arent that much heavier than normal ICE cars
yes!
not those "smart" ones heh
I prefer cleaner air. Roads are already fucked
Some in my state people put Christmas trees in potholes. Celebrating their second or third Christmas for the pothole lmao
pretty sure in the end people will be blaming ev's for ruining the earth as well
they certainly dont help the earth directly, but they worsen it less than ICE cars
just badly fill the hole yourself, so the state must fill it properly themself
he needs a cup of hot chocolate in his ICE car!
small one though, so he keeps the car :probsLUL:
They'll probably just tell you thanks for doing their job
Some fun ones. The latter one has been decorated by residents
those aren't...uhhh..potholes
looks like a section of road was removed and just not replaced
and instead had dirt piled onto it
lol yea
That's what happens if you leave a pothole to get larger and larger
aussie got a strange understanding of what a pothole is
They are genuine potholes, just left to be neglected
the potholes around here that I despise are the ones that you don't see until you're just about to drive into it, and it's just big enough to let your tire completely fall into it
rim breakers
Better shot of the top photo
my tires are pretty low profile and they give a bone jarring WHAM! when I do
looks like some kind of damage that was further demo'd but never came back to repair
State Government has paid out at least 50 claims totalling $43,000 on pothole damage for cars this year. Probably more as the article I found was old
I mean, nobody would drive through/over that on purpose, right?
They would repair it fast if they did the damage. This is pure rain destruction
people don't pay attention lol
Helps we've had a lot of la Nina rain
where the dirt come from? unless that's bubbling up from underneath
potholes around here usually indicating an actual hole, not a volcano rising up
Dirt from underneath the road/ rain run off
Or residents trying to make it more of an obvious sign
State gov is shit at repairing potholes. One nearby me had 3 repairs in 6 weeks. And it was still going bad when I was last there
They only repaired the pothole the first time when it got so large it started to damage a speed bump
I blame the kangaroos jumping around
potholes here are tricky cause liability and duty or maintenance can fall under state, county, city or private and since so many side roads especially in and around shopping centers etc are actually privately owned people don't know who to contact and generally blame the city or whatever
just had to help a lady on nextdoor find who owned the road that has a pothole around here cause she and others started spiraling down blaming the city when the city has nothing to do with it lol
We have an app here where you can report them with location info. It's actually been fairly effective
even for privately owned ones? communication between all the above generally seems to suck
after my car has nearly been swallowed, of course
no, these are all public roads
so goes to the city
you report something to one entity but then that never gets relayed to the right entity
Luckily for the state I'm in it's small enough that there are no councils or anything. Everything is one gov.
Don't think I've really encountered any private roads (or ever thought about it apart from carparks)
Got a neat website to report potholes, too bad they're just slow
get those IT guys out there fixing potholes
I don't get why we don't institute more jailed community service type jobs
wonder if these sold out
heh the HDD in my NVR in the barn is working again
I thought for sure once it stopped it was going to be toast
Heh I think I use a lot of docker, plus a lot of ls
command line? what is this? 1978?
Insufficient vi usage
Convenience
pretty sure that sentiment is the very reason UI was created lol
A GUI is sometimes more convenient. There's plenty of things that a CLI is just easier for though
Ha! My street gets them all the time. They just come and slap in some ashphalt which lasts a few weeks at most
But to bring a docker container up, or to update its just ssh auto (auto configured as a ssh config entry) then ./dockerConUpdate
Updates everything
imagines someone clicking through 100 dialogs to get docker configured
Windows users
or you get the one back form the 90s with >100 options on one page. What was the name? super encoder? iirc. it was just a frontend to ffmpeg
bla bla bla, you can also use command line for windows x.x
Bring back the windows 10 search bar, except it's for command line instead of search
Hell, I'd take a taskbar command line on a linux gui too now that I think about it
is [Win]+R not a thing anymore?
i would prefer first open cmd or powershell and then do your stuff
I don't remember windows every having a cmdline in the taskbar or start menu. Just a search that didn't suckk like win10's
It was just an exaggerated idea
Neither cmd nor powershell have a proper version of curl, not even starting about the retardness of these utilities
I hate how windows has proper ssh, except doesn't have ssh-copy-id. I want to be lazy god damnit π
you're in 2015, aren't you?
it was always installable, but not as part of the os.. so what?
powershell is quite interesting. And curl can be installed on windows. It's not a shell builtin
ongy: curl is allready included now
Powershell
powershell
You have to use some wacky PowerShell command
bash has some basic tcp support, though I don't think it supports anything interesting
cls
cause you have to use another syntax`? please go get some whine..
because it's not curl π And wow, that default alias is ridiculous
No, lots of stuff is missing.
default aliasing a well known command onto a lacking builtin is just stupid
you can even use curl on windows
I never said otherwise
that's two clicks in ui
i can click that faster than you can type it
and i'm slow
people keep thinking cli is easier, faster but what it really means is those people haven't figured out how to ui yet lol
I run one single command to update all my docker containers across all my servers. It takes me about 5 seconds to type it
Then let it run
and what if you want to leave some containers out?
update-docker (tab at update-) and then enter
don't worry about poeople that seriously try to say that UI is faster than composible cli
in unraid ui its also just a click
I usually don't
I would dread it too
Nah I just only update when I need to
Otherwise its a docker pull for what I need
I should make a script let me select lol
or just use ui and presto
hrhr
your not that youtube guy that does 3d printer videos are you?
Don't have a UI for my docker stuff. All a headless server
no i even have no 3d printer, @forest edge π
ah
remote/headless = made for ui lol
Now I kinda want to see that happen over our mix of kubernetes clusters on real hardware, google cloud, vms in google cloud and some vms on local hardware
thats a bigger thing that needs a bigger ui. i just speak for my homeserver with several dockers. my point was: it is easier with a ui than cli
lol
You all nasty
i know
I can run a script across 3000 servers in parallel via a CLI faster than it'd take to do the same thing in a GUI on 1 server
No it doesn't need a bigger UI. It needs composibility. And unless you are using visual testing frameworks, you won't have that with guis
if you skip the part, where you'd have to google what that command is, sure
not if you say, make a button on a local page that does the same thing
π€¦ββοΈ
yea, GUI is better for discoverability
it's better for almost everything
I'm personally a big fan of applications that have both. And can export the graphical clicky config into a cmdline for scripting
just checked out that marlin web firmware builder.. so neat what people can do
Scripting is a lot of fun
with google cloud it's:
console(web-ui) to discover and figure out things
gcloud (cmdline) to document and script things
strong disagree on ffmpeg parameter guessing
So basically take a 6 character command into another webpage you have to wait to load, then press a button to start the process
Just script over ffmpeg
wait to load? just how bad is your local network?
you can not only do just that, but you can add other functions as well so you could have 1 page that does it all
even for shit that isn't remotely related if you wanted
hey, my .zshrc takes around 100ms on the corpa vm
prime example would be a OS upgrade
most of that is a request to our auth server to check if I need to renew tickets
click one button to update your servers and another to see atx dancing with a thong gif
want to click the settings menus in windows or just stubmit 2 commands? (or heck, 1)
on modern windows you just reboot and it's integrated o.0
haven't touched that garbage in 10 years
win11 was gross, but it's growing on me now
my current example would be photoprism import. Sure, it could be a feature in photoprism
But with composible cli, I can just do an inotifywait -r $importdir -e close_exec ; photoprism import
With gui I'd have to check if something changed and then find the import button in another UI
oh, and the composibility allows me to wrap the command in a while true (my real command is inotifywait -mr | while read file)
some kind of masochistic to use cli for all easy shit you can do^^
I use what's convenient to me. Which is 80% cli. I could write more GUIs for the stupid stuff I do. But ssh composes well π
i want photoprism to use my coral π€¬
I think there's some WIP PR around?
none working afaik
which reminds me, I wanted to see if I can get my hands on a coral
they been back and forth but the price increase every time
I dual boot windows and popOS. Windows terminal is a PITA, but windows supports scaling far better than linux. Overall linux is my go to now, but windows there if I need it
something that started out around 60 bucks is now like 160
is mint not popular anymore?
thats the problem with linux
no unity
I have a friend who changes OS's like it's shoes
You mean like windows 10 vs 11?
I have a spare
But honestly I love the choice. Happy with PopOS right now
me me
update is not the same thing as flavor
On dedicated hardware or one TPU on the dual unit? π
I have a single m2 in a pcie adapter that I don't use since I have the dual tpu on custom pcie board
True, far more choice with flavours
as well as headaches and lack of support and the list goes on and on and on lol
I don't have any lack of support
Only issue is just programs being weird with scaling, which windows had until around 2018 I think?
I just don't scale anything tbh
scaling? no idea wtf you are actually refering to
Except terminal on 4k resolution
do you actually enable scaling on them, or just font size?
Windows does it by default, on high DPI displays it has to scale to make it viewable. 150% is whats comfortable for me
Just font size tbh
Yeah, i hate the windows scaling by default
Always set it to 100
you like to make things bigger?
Yes because 100% is too small
I hate that. Windows scaling works well tbh. 150% is great
I can honestly say since my time on windows (since 3.1) i cannot recall one time that being an issue
but as far as i know scaling has always been in the settings
Do you ever use a high res display, or just 1080p display?
Yeah 1080p doesn't need scaling
1080 today is 320x240 of old
I mean yea.. but no
Give it a little bit more
640x480?
Since 1440p is a decent enough standard, with 4k being a bit too much
Yep
I wish I had 3x8k tbh
with monitor advancement 1080 is still the primo
for gaming
maybe not for watching movies
1440p is the best in my opinion. Works great for a working display + gaming + youtube
eh, 4k on laptops is mostly fluff, but it's nice on 30"+ displays
i guess eventually one would become numb to the blur lol
What blur?
never ran the ufo test?
what type of panel?
forced scaling for legacy GUI can force blurryness because it's done on pixels
2k on laptop displays is the sweet spot, more dense than 1080p, but not overly dense to be a waste like 4k
you know, because GUI doesn't compose and hacks are horrible π
Thats x11 on linux
I hate whenever I come to a dock with a 1080 monitor
wrong
X11 does support scaling, the way it's plumbed through Xwayland is a bit dumb though
Its blurry for discord on linux for me. Because its running on x11 and doesn't support anything but 100 ro 200
*or
win32 applications that didn't get updated get that treatment on windows. It looks like ass
You rarely see that though
pretty sure it's the panel
for some time that was even the old settings windows of windows itself π
even those high priced odessys blur
δ½
Can't remember. But its a nice gaming monitor. Not terribly expensive but it doesn't blur. Not as much as my old samsung 1080p monitor did anyway lol
smear/blur whatever they call.. ghosting
need to find what type fo panel.. cause i have never heard of ghhosting on a lower resolution vs higher
Maybe I just had a shitty 1080p panel
probably
I just went through all of this over black friday cause I really did like that 2k.. but the ghosting drove me nuts lol
I settled on a smaller panel running 1080 cause it's something that is still done right
i never even heard of this lol https://youtu.be/PVrm8hkNT38

disgusting
Suicidal you say
how can you treat those rpi's like that especially with what they are going for these days? lol
although that rpi1 isn't worth shit
isn't there some 3's? or are those others 2's?
i see what looks like a 4?
1s, 2s, 3, 4s

yes, HODL
me, when there is a new AQI sensor installed in the neighborhood.
i guess i should sell my 3 sitting in my desk drawer for 2+ years
I need to browse ebay for some thins with hardware watchdogs
i just saw the micro center store here which is one of the official outlets for rpi's had an rpi3 for 34 bucks
pi has some upstream issue where it will fail to reboot randomly
gets in a stuck state where the hardware nic is still blasting away but cant ssh in etc
hardware faults on rpi's is pretty rare. likely going to be a power issue or something off with your sdcard
fedora 37, I am running the latest kernel π
uname -a or it didn't happen
poe hat also has this issue across multiple known good cards

is that new enough for you?
downgrade
been an issue across a few kernels
I don't see rpi os having 6.0 so you might hit some bugs for sure
rpi os also has its own set of issues due to old ass packages
plus I am really happy with ostree
what are ass packages
but no reboot issue π
true, but I fell in love with podman
No

what is wrong with systemd and podman @clear ferry?
true but docker has been shit for a few things
Yes, and red hat of course has the solution to everything
opensuse is also good... I just like how i can basically use a container image as my os

This reminds me of someone who told me their team had a physical ball to be able to push their code and they had to pass it around and get in a queue.
That is like using a hypervisor to make a truenas vm, where the truenas vm holds all the vms
But I love (platonically) people who push the envelope
Absolutely excellent, like being at school, putting your hand up lol
The problem is you had to put your hand up before you knew what the question was π

America cannot bread π
you see the part where they talk about how euro bread is diffrent because the yeast is weaker
I never would have in a million years even think about anything like that.. bread is bread lol
The big question is... Is there a HA compatible, affordable Bread Maker / Bread Machine? Are we there yet?
I'm currently building my own esp based smart IR remote
mostly for fun, could buy it for ~20β¬, but that's boring
ir is weird
hardest part was getting a LED strong enough to be picked up across the room
what?
You wire Atx up with IR LEDs, as he walks they bounce
sounds good to me
Doormat returns are the next thing
when you find a roku remote you lost 2+ years ago in a strange unusual pocket between the couch cushions
Do you never clean your sofa? π€
I mean how do you clean pockets you never knew existed?
I take all the cushions off my sofa to swap them around and vacuum every few months
Hi can we use a 6pin type c female for programming esp?
hm? 6pin is probably power only, so you won't be able to
Oh, no. It's USB2 compatible without CC it seems
Should be possible then
#diy-archived is likely the best place to get help with that though
Don't we love the USB C spec
no
it's really cool how much we can shove over a single cable
but trying to do anything with it that's not just plug and play is....
That's my point. USBC somehow manages to make everything confusing
Like how devices are made with USB 2.0 USB c
Are you talking about the connector, or one of the many generations of communication standard π
the hundreds of USB protocol versions on the connector already exist with USB-A
(like Samsung and the z flip 4. No clue why the heck that's USB 2)
and then some funky colouring to try and signal what port does what
Could've tried to simplify it with type C though
that went down the drain somewhere between 2.0 and 3.x when they started with proprietary PD
Nah the Samsung phones use USB pd
because the port is primarily for charging and the data lines are expensive π
Just the z flip 4 just got shit as the only non USB 3 in their current lineup
I'm looking forward to even more weird scuff around docking stations with USB4, when DP is switched, not on dedicated lines
With kids i do that at least once a month
I don't have kids and I do it about once every 6 weeks. It's how I avoid buying new hair ties π
You better also get used to cleaning p-traps with three girlsβ¦β¦are p-traps used outside of the US?
They're pretty common everywhere with plumbing
siphons?
The primary purpose being to stop gasses from the sewer coming into the house
Gases, and raccoons
No worries with raccoons, my fat ass barely fits through the main pipes
Like that but with bum
Doubly hilarious because they used to get hate for using a "proprietary" connector that in reality was just the USB 3 version of micro B
(C wasn't a thing at the time)
windows 12 when?
2026
Yesterday
That was one of the first things I noticed when I saw a microUSB 3.0 port for the first time. I thought that was clever.
I'm pretty sure I only ever had one device with that connector though
I've only seen that used in external drives
yea, we had a couple USB3 external SSDs with the Micro B
It was popular for a while
Oh I remember those things. Ridiculous.

Well yes
The Tesla door quality is as good as a lada that's been in the Baltic sea for 40 years
Funny how often you see a Tesla X where one of the rear doors are a little off in the colour compared to the rest
But at the current rate Tesla will probably be bankrupt in two years anyway
Bought up by some Chinese investment fund
Quality will soar
You mean, with an obvious sign that a part got replaced and they don't have QC?
Yes
When the parts get replaced
Long lead time for everything too
Saw an article about a guy that waited over a year for parts, still haven't gotten it
Tesla refuses to use spare parts from used cars too which is great
Even more fun in Norway, since EVs are tax free but replacement parts aren't, a lot of cars get totalled for small repairable damage
so there is my chance for a free EV ?
Well, yes, a lot of people buy totalled EVs
That only have frontal damage
And reuse the batteries to make battery walls
A youtube channel I watch started with 2x batteries from teslas, they were 24V
Not the entire module, I guess 2 modules?
Would be sweet tbh
still sounds low. Stuff tends to be 40V or 50V since that's the cutoff for higher worker protection regulation
I love hating on them as much as the next guy, but people don't buy a Tesla because they care about how flexible the interior panels are or how large the gaps are between the doors
There's a good reason they are selling relatively well that other manufacturers have to catch up to
they caught up to everything that's not a deathtrap
yeah, and other brands have caught up a long time ago, and tesla is just respinning the same shitty design over and over now
if only the chinese brands were let into the US tesla would be desimated
the only feature Tesla got is that they enable more features in their autopilot
while it's unreliable as fuck and a deathtrap investigated by the feds
though afaik in the US their charger network is larger. But that's US only
The latest numbers are that norwegian counties are buying 79-91% of all new cars are EV only excluding finnmark which has 27% because they have perpetual winter
tesla is still on top, just because they have stock
That's actually a pretty decent idea.
The chinese models are gaining a lot of traction now, I would say at least every 10 EVs I see now is a hongqi, nio or byd
Since Volvo is now going full EV, VAG is stopping selling ICE engines in 2025 and the other brands are not far behind, tesla will have to distinguish themselves
and tbh they don't
we constantly have two polestar and usually one tesla in front of the office
They had them in series for 48V
We constantly have 70% EVs in the office @glacial knot
yea, the 48V module should be what's one unit in production o.0
we actually barely have parking, since Munich has working public transport
Salesforce has 80% of the garage or so. We only have 8 or 12 spots
but all of the bike cages π
we have fair amount of parking tbh, we are 100 people roughly in the NO branch, and we have probably, 60 parking spots
we got 1.7k people in the office
and the two times I parked in that garage, I saw 1 other car. Accumulated
Do you ever wonder like, if there are 1700 people, how many did something, or didn't something
Like how many not wearing underwear or something
Sorry for the random thought
At most 1699 π
and now you get to wonder if I like free range sausage, or we got pea smugglers π
Going without is far more comfortable
1.7k in the office, I need to come to DEUTCHLAND and visit you
But when you have stuff hanging around, the support would be nice
there's usually not everyone in the office
but if you want to visit, give me a ping a day or two ahead
found the pingpong table just 2 weeks ago
Who is the cat playing with
HALLO, JA, ES IST MICH, JA, ATX, JA, HALLO, ICH KOMME GLEICH
silly raccoon, cats can't play ping pong
they have built-in paddles and don't need a table, net, or opponent
Wait, if that one is playing pong
kitty paws are especially squishy
oh, need to unclog my hotend
Is the other cat playing ping?
michelle got stuck yesterday
EROTIC
OH
Nothing worse than a clogged hotend
can I stick that hot end somewhere?
but thanks to good old socialist healthcare I have two healthy kids
and not a lifetime of debt
YEAH

bio printers D:
Printing or drinking?
Drinking is probably what Sonoma would do
still printing those raccoon balls?
They are some big balls
Yes, tanuki figurines for @last cedar
Almost as big as the printers
If Tesla does crumple and eventually get consumed it'll be by one of the big automakers, one that's struggling with EVs. Honda maybe?
vw maybe
VW already got a full palette of EVs stretched over VW, Audi and Porsche
It wouldn't hurt tesla to have vw reliability though
Going from 0% durability to 1% durability would be a huge increase
the main issue with tesla is the false promises made my musket and the assembly quality
while vw makes falses promises aswell, they make fewer and the assembly quality is a lot higher
- vw currents ev vehicles are either shoeboxes on wheels or very pricey
The "I tried to open the door and the handle came off" problems need fixing at Tesla
I hate to say it but I almost dare say that Kia/ Hyundai are the leaders in evs at the moment, seems like although they are all catching on fire, none of the other evs are immune either
People seem to love the ioniq 5 is it called? And the EV6
As long as we are getting innovation, it is all good, energy density needs to improve though, obviously
Would be nice if you didn't need cobalt and copper from child labour in Africa too :/
Honestly I haven't compared efficiency between EVs, I should at some point
just look up real world kWh/100km consumption, there are many websites where people can keep track of their statistics publicly
I was shocked when I heard someone say thats an actual issue
as long as they come with door handles
Trying to get in and out of a Tesla makes me feel dumb every time
I know two people that happened two
One person counts twice as well actually, because it happened in two different Teslas (in two countries no less)
"Ah yes my $100,000 car that I cannot get into because the door handles came off"
Well, these were "couldn't get out of" π
The doors seem unnecessarily over engineered, apparently badly
#JustTeslaThings
That seems to be tesla in a nutshell though
See the no stalks, so to change wiper settings you fiddle on the screen
Whilst in rain
Or this abomination where the indicators are capacitive buttons on the wheel
I had to move over and stare at the door of my Uber for a minute to figure out how to get out
It was a button π€·
Its just a issue of willingness :p
Break the windows and you can get out. Outsmart your car, not let it outsmart you.
See I thought BMW was unnecessarily complex where if the car door is locked it takes two handle pulls to open it (one to unlock, another to open)
Then tesla goes nah fuck this
should watch that video i posted about the I7.. 3 ways to open the door from inside and out lol
Time for homemade sausage pizza
Tesla fails at the Principle of Least Surprise
I wonder if anyone will remember that this whole kick start to EV's is because of tesla though
It'll be one of those brands relegated to history
Like all of the british motoring brands
It really has. That's why I tend to hold back on Musk-bashing - it's one of several things that he's helped push forward and will have a lasting impact

3d printing is such a pain.. you fiddle and get everything just right and 90% of your first layers stick just fine then all out nowhere some asshat small section is like, Nope! don't wanna stick, no reason other than to piss you off
Sounds like a draft, an improperly levelled print bed, or a dirty print bed. Or incorrect use of supports.
I have to pop my glass plate in the fridge to get prints off right now
sounds like a lot of things.. but said small portion is never in the same spot lol
I think imperfections in the filament just happens to be strategically placed so perfectly they only come into play once each print
@last cedar damn unreliable racoon filament amirite
Like wtf lol
Yep, that's raccoon crap
Makes no sense
same damn spot same print, restarted and it stick fine
but now, i just know that 10% will end up somewhere else
@forest edge is your filament dry?
That's an awfully personal question
not old enough to get to that point. it's just random decisions to not stick in very small places
too bad @clear ferry has me on block. like to talk to him about that movie Troll and their most prized vehicles being a late 60's model chevy truck lol

Leave me out of this
This is why you don't use raccoon as filament
saw a fox on my farm cam, but I think the two racoons i saw out there the other night might be alittle big for it to tackle lol
Lol, I would think so
I think foxes like smaller stuff, not sure if they can learn to hunt fat raccoons
I know cats that hunt foxes π
There are big cats that eat like crocodiles or cayman or such, I guess anything is possible really
It obviously thinks it is a tiger lol
I think was a jaguar btw
