ashen parrot
#

wow that would be SOOOO cumbersome

#

if I have to open my mouth, it's not an automation

forest edge
#

what do you mean?

#

about the nest

static schooner
#

It wants to learn your habits and adjust accordingly and I always wanted more control

forest edge
#

but the point is you just use it till one day you don't have to

ashen parrot
#

the best ones are integrated into day to day actions. Open door, light comes on. Then what do you need? you notice after 10min of entering you need to open the window for some reason? integrate that. Point is, you can be your own AI for the most part

#

averaging out your habits

forest edge
#

i put one at my moms and just taught her how to adjust for winter/summer etc and eventually it just started doing the same changes she would have made on it's own using outside and inside current temps as reference

static schooner
#

Like I said, it's a change in mindset, and it probably just works for moms

forest edge
#

you mean you kept going over to it even when you didn't need to? I guess that's the part i'm confused about in your statement

static schooner
#

I obsess about whether it'll misinterpret my one-time change and feel more comfortable setting a schedule

forest edge
#

here in the midwest it really gets a lot of incoming data. when one hour can be drastically different in temps outside and then the next hour.. i am shocked it even works

ashen parrot
#

I totally get that with youtube videos to the point where I just don't click triggering terms

#

if you click one time on a video that tries to debunk something, you'll get a years worth of recommendations for the exact topic you hated

forest edge
#

I also like it cause my mom prefers to boil and when I know i will be heading over there I can remotely lower the temps below the surface of the sun

static schooner
#

I do like the sensor temp/occupancy detection and home/away mode change of my Ecobees

#

So maybe I'll get more comfortable with more learning in the future

forest edge
#

i never found much "saving" in lower the temps etc while away back when I did use to work so I stopped messing with anything like that

ashen parrot
#

so you just leave your heat ing on at all times?

forest edge
#

heating? even dumb thermostats these days auto swap between heat and ac dependent on the temp desired

#

I just found I used more energy getting the house back up to comfortable temps when coming home than the system does to maintain those temps throughout the day

ashen parrot
#

yes that is why I asked

#

because also there is increased comfort at very little extra cost if you just leave it

#

I tried it the other way and the discomfort of having to sit through the temperature change every time is very frustrating, not worth the small savings

dusky plank
#

I just check outside/inside temps and also the flow temperature to determine from there what to do for my floor heating

ashen parrot
#

flow temp?

dusky plank
#

the water temperature flowing through the heating system

ashen parrot
#

oh

last cedar
#

My shunt was throwing out 30C ish water, earlier

#

For normal radiators, it is cozy in here

forest edge
#

surprised radiators are still a thing

finite atlas
#

we still have mostly radiators

#

our house is pre ww2 tho

last cedar
#

Retro fitting under floor heating isn't always so easy

clear ferry

you should see my parents heated veranda windows

#

fuck those things get hot

ashen parrot
#

wow, roasting a baby, there's a picture for ya

last cedar
#

My house is from 1943/1944, and I like those old style radiators

last cedar
clear ferry
#

One of my childhood friends had a microwave that could fit a fooking toddler

#

jesus that was huge

clear ferry
#

this wasn't industrial, just from the 80s

#

I bet TV signals were broken for neighbours in a 4km radius when they cooked something in it

#

You can say I jest, but my MIL microwave from the 90s, whenever we were there with my eldest the baby monitor would cut out if you used it, and we weren't in the same room

ashen parrot
#

oh so thats where the roasted baby metaphor came from

last cedar
forest edge
#

I would imagine insulation would be your enemy not your friend

last cedar
forest edge
#

spends a lot of money in insulation but has to leave the door open to vent out the heat

last cedar
#

Oh no, I have thermostatic valves, so it can't get too hot

#

They stop the flow when it gets too warm, saves a bunch of energy, and have a 500L tank for more efficient burning of pellets

clear ferry
#

I've never seen a house with water heating in norway, just apartment buildings

forest edge
#

why no wood burning broiler?

last cedar
forest edge
#

then what "energy" are you saving?

last cedar
#

Tank is kept between 60C and 80C, the less wwater going through the radiators means water is warmer when it gets back to the tank, so it saves heating the water more than is needed

forest edge
#

oh

#

you made it sound like electric bill saving lol

last cedar
#

Water returns at higher temperature

#

Well, it would be saving electric if I used electric to heat the water

finite atlas
last cedar
#

Plan is to try and integrate an air water heat pump, to use solar energy

ashen parrot
#

I made a pellet stove once

#

it recycled the smoke, feeding it back into the chamber

#

so that it burned twice with very little emissions

finite atlas
last cedar
finite atlas
#

i have a upper and lower water temp sensor in the 300L tank

last cedar
#

That is pretty nice tbh!

finite atlas
#

the lower water gets used for in-home heating aswell, the upper only for sinks and showers

forest edge
#

wood, water, oil no thanks

last cedar
#

As it is now, there is a 3kW immersion heater, but we only use it for tap water, too expensive to heat house unless something is broken

forest edge
#

I do have an oil space heater i use in the garage sometimes, but heats via electric

ashen parrot
#

yeah but all those solar panels come from china ^^

last cedar
forest edge
#

do you use those thermo powered fans to scoot air around the house @last cedar ?

#

I see those in mobile off grid vids all the time sitting ontop the pellet stove

last cedar
#

The pellet machine is in its own room in the cellar

forest edge
#

radiators don't push outwards tho

last cedar
#

If it was a stove I would defo have fans

finite atlas
last cedar
forest edge
#

ah

last cedar
#

I realised quickly that the air quality here was crap, condensation inside a couple windows

#

And that was before I had put in good windows, once the house was more air tight it would have been a disaster

finite atlas
#

you'll certainly need one of those air exchanger thingies

last cedar
#

Now we have a LOT better climate

finite atlas
last cedar
#

But an air water would use less energy per kW of heat

finite atlas
#

if you have a fresh water system, stay under 70°c
if you got an actual storage tank, you can yeet it up to 90°c

last cedar
#

I am thinking of increasing it from 80C to be honest, make longer burns, less frequently

#

I think the burner has a cut out at 88C, 85 should be good

finite atlas
#

you dont need to push >60 every day, its enough to do it once every couple of days or even every week

#

does your tank have a port to be cleaned? then all you gotta do is clean it every couple of years and you can heat it up to 90

last cedar
#

Someone is at home every day, at some point, so the water is never still very long, so that is a good idea

last cedar
finite atlas
#

we've never done that in >10 years, we only replaced the old steel tank with stainless steel recently, as the old one was leaking already

last cedar
#

The one I have now wasn't new when it was installed

#

I believe it is all copper

#

But I need to confirm

finite atlas
#

copper tank? interesting

last cedar
#

It is the right colour on the outside to be copper, at least

finite atlas
#

:D

last cedar
#

And I believe it was mentioned

#

There is a giant coil for solar water heating too, currently unused

finite atlas
#

We do it all ourself, but granted, it does look and act like it

last cedar
#

That is where I was thinking about an air water

ashen parrot

so there is -some- heat exchange between them.

ashen parrot
#

no, I meant on top of that

#

cos the outtake is already hot and the intake is cool presumably this time of year

#

so the outtake gets to impart a bit of the heat it has to the intake just by juxtaposition

ashen parrot

sorry my bad, what I meant was, a script that makes a button out of the whole ordeal and slaps it on the thumbnail

#

I don't know if people noticed this but the main way that google services are set up is so that they keep you there as long as possible

#

it has nothing to do with what you like, dislike, do or not do

#

the "not interested" button barely works

#

even if you click I dont like the video aftrwards, it still doesn't care

#

it's a psyop basically so you feel heard

#

which is why it lets you comment stuff then shadowbanning your comment without letting you know. The reason for it matters little, my point is just that it won't let you know so that you stop. It keeps you going

i dont know, but the google algorithms fail hard with me

harsh heath
#

@forest edge The 24W USB-Hub didn't solve it. I thought to myself, maybe there was already too much juice: so I added 5m cable and 2 unpowered 2.0 HUBs between the zigbee-stick and Pi400.

It now works, after 11 hours of pain

#

So the SSD made the Pi deliver to much power to the USB ports, which effected the zigbee stick

#

Using a powered hub was counter-effective

clear ferry
#

Who'd ever guess it this would be the situation, one more complication!

forest edge
#

and wtf stick are you using? 5m cable and 2 usb hubs to make it work? stay away from aliexpress

ashen parrot

I stay away from aliexpress on principle :p

umbral cliff

AliExpress is fine for cheap ZigBee stuff

harsh heath
dusky plank
#

Wait 24h and see if the conbee still works

harsh heath
#

It has been working for the last 4 hours, fingers crossed

forest edge
#

@harsh heath sounds like you got some kind of other issues going on. you said you had the stick already on a 1m cable off the side. that should have worked just fine.. not this 5m and 2 hubs janky thing your talking about now. you should still use the powered hub for the ssd regardless

#

glad my tubz zigbee coordinator isn't that finicky

harsh heath
# forest edge <@730773310903943169> sounds like you got some kind of other issues going on. yo...

hardware is 1 year old, used always the original power adapter, was never shut down abruptly. I am certain weakening the signal had been the solution, 1m cable was not enough.

A year back I had experienced similar thing with my mouse's 2.4ghz receiver. Tried multiple things, powered usb hubs, more sheltered cables, 3.0 cable...
Solution was to weaken the signal by using a long 2.0 cable.

#

Some stuff don't like to have a fast and powerful connection

forest edge
#

regardless you were going to have power issues serving a ssd and a zigbeee stick using usb power off the pi

harsh heath
#

yeah another powered hub never hurts. I'll use it elsewhere when I switch away from the Pi for HA

I mean I see a deployment instruction from the command line but it kinda feels like it's for linux? idk

the general consensus is that if you are deploying on windows you're doing it wrong

WSL at a minimum. VirtualBox is better but still bad

ashen parrot

I have my Ha running in a virtual box

wouldn't wanna add more stuff to said box, overencumbering

it is much better served running on a server

if you want to run other things with it, you're better with docker

but thats not my use case

I mean did you even click the link?

it need both does it

wet pilot

doesn't look like they provide non-docker install instructions

if you dig around you might be able to find the dockerfile and recreate it locally but i wouldn't recommend it as then you wouldn't be on a supported path by them

I think that's the critical piece that's missing. Transparency. ML as it is today is inherently opaque, we're building this "dumb" neural network and treating it like a black box, kinda because we have to. But that's no excuse to throw up our hands and walk away. I think what will finally sell it for tinkers and enthusiasts is systems (probably hobby-time FOSS software) that focuses on letting you manually manage the training process: adjusting priorities, curating training data (i.e. "I had a party this weekend, ignore these dates and/or use them for a different model"), even revision control

#

You miss out so much

ashen parrot

I don't

because Im not running Linux. This is what I remember from back in the day :p

#

I needed Fruity Loops to run, and couldn't audio was choppy, had no asio drivers

not to mention games

#

which just couldn't be done back then

#

but with windows, it just worked

dusky plank
#

Dll hell

forest edge
#

lol you are not missing shit with linux. you want to run a server type scenario, some flavor of linux all the way but as a daily web surfing, game playing, video watching driver... windows all the way

clear ferry
#

No issues doing audio production in linux @ashen parrot best regards musician

ashen parrot
#

maybe not now

#

but 12 years ago sure

#

anyway there's no point in arguing something couldn't be done

#

usually you can do anything if you can and have the know how

#

and I was no expert

#

but as I said, no drivers

#

used the same settings as in windows, but the latency was horrendous

#

which was a bummer for me because I needed it for live

glacial knot
#

There also no advantage to browsing or videos on windows
The only bastion it got is games

forest edge
#

one stop shop you say

ashen parrot
#

and the latency was the exact reason I went for Linux cos I had heard that it handled it better than Windows

glacial knot
#

Nah, driver landsacpe used to be worse

#

But MS is annoying more and more larger shops, so it's worth investing into Linux a bit more

And the generally more mature subsystems help writing them as hobbyists

finite atlas

linux desktop has gotten much more mature the recent years, but still lacks behind years in some aspects compared to winbloat

forest edge
#

ubuntu sure did try

ashen parrot

I think it's like that with all industry. I mean there's no point in selling stuff unless you got the edge right? once the dust settles, everything eventually becomes open source

no drivers

clear ferry
#

don't buy shitty hardware you see 😄

ashen parrot
#

lol

#

that does make sense if you don't think about it

clear ferry
#

also, most high end stuff is midi controlled anyway, so no drivers needed

ashen parrot
#

lol you dont need drivers for midi?

#

in what world

clear ferry
#

well you need it for the controller itself, not for the plethora of devices on the midi ring

#

and that is no issues

I mean who uses midi for the sound, lol

And yes, the EMU0404 is from 2006, and has been supported in linux since then

Mixed feelings tbh. It is a solution to Linux's biggest problem (rampant library ABI instability). A brute-force solution that sacrifices a lot to avoid a tangling with the developer attitudes underpinning the instability problems... but it does work. The sandboxing stuff is well-meaning but ultimately a cure worse than the disease because desktop apps are built around a UI design philosophy that's fundamentally incompatible with good security and people are used to it.

when you work for an american company and suddenly get $2000 extra payment for some reason

clear ferry

Well, it was multi faceted, it was 2000x5 + $10k in stock, plus a 20% pay raise

junior forge
# clear ferry https://www.lyse.no/strom/strompriser?postnummer=2165

Yeah we have a couple of suppliers that do that too in NL. But I have solar panels, which makes that really not attractive to use. We have a law that allows us to use the grid as a battery. For example, if produce 5 kWh to the grid this afternoon, I can freely pick it up from the grid again at night.
This is extremely nice (and a bit stupid), but with hourly pricing it doesn't work like that. In those cases I will get paid the (low) energy hourly price for my over capacity during the day and have to buy expensive again at night.

finite atlas
#

its horribly stupid

junior forge
#

as a matter of fact, on a yearly basis: Everything solar produced in a year will be subtracted from my total energy usage bill over the whole year. I only pay the difference (or get paid if I produced more at that point).

#

so right now... I'm actually reclaiming my energy I've produced this summer

umbral cliff
#

Huh time of use is actually really good deal, especially given I can home assistant control all heating, cooling, and dishwasher usage

#

Especially given peak is only 5 hours of the day

finite atlas
glacial knot
#

it's a huge subsidy

finite atlas
#

and who has to pay for it? everyone else who dosnt have solar panels

glacial knot
#

that's kinda how government subsidies work, yes

finite atlas
#

and the more people that get such a solar contract, the more instable the electricity network gets

dusky plank
#

We have something called „Grundversorgungsgesetz“, I could theoretically quit my current contract and still have the right to get energy at the lowest price from the state. This would be the best if you don‘t have excessive draw and can level out with solar and still get the needed Hz from the supply. Would end up paying less than 5C/kWh BUT its a legal gray area.

finite atlas
#

how would you pay 5c/kWh in germany?

dusky plank
#

in germany? I have no idea

clear ferry
#

We should get back to €0.001 soon

prisma briar
#

And how the output from solar can be decently predicted based on the weather.

#

I'm curious if adding solar to existing infrastructure has ever caused a degradation in grid reliability.

junior forge
#

@prisma briar It is not an unreasonable concern, as a matter of fact, it is reality and a pretty hard issue here.

#

The grid in some parts of our country isn't able to handle all solar power flowing in

Should I try another go on running emby instead of plex. Plex have given complete crap about their core users for years now

forest edge
#

not trying to sound like i back plex. but what's the issue?

umbral cliff
#

I think jellyfin is the new alternative flavour of the month.
But what sonoma said, what's the issue. Haven't had any issues with plex myself

forest edge
#

I always liked and preferred kodi and while you can make it do pretty much if not everything plex does, the out of box part of plex is just too convenient for anyone who dosen't want to spend hours fine tuning their setup

#

not to mention pairing with friends libraries is just seamless and works

late gate
#

@forest edge in plex a lot of things are perfect, skip intro, plays well, many sharing opinions etc, but when elementary issues get ignored for the 3 year in a row i start to wonder ifvtge home consumers media they care about. Two ex. 1. When you finish a show and cluck back. The show is not marked watched before you refresh, and alsi it happens a lit lipsync after skip firward. Thus is for the lastest shield pro, but dir me i just want a enjoyeable time

forest edge
#

never had the issue with click back and having to refresh. the audio mismatch when forwarding/rewind isn't plex. many many factors play into that

#

at the root they all do the same thing. the only differences is transcoding in plex

late gate
#

On appletv it works greeat though

dusky plank
#

Jellyfin does transcoding too, and its really good at it

forest edge
#

I think "great" falls down to the hardware crunching it

late gate
#

@dusky plank but very immature alstikk. Im glad we are getting options as plex in general doesn’t reply anymore. As now and in 2,.years later they still haven’t replied. In alao thinkingbrunnung kodi with plex or emby

Hi all! Does anyone have an example of light control, as in the integration of Adaptive Lightnings, only through the HA itself?

#

I need from 7:00 to 13:00 so that the brightness increases smoothly, and the temperature of the light also smoothly changes from warm to cold. From 13:00 to 19:00 vice versa
