Fascinating

haven't seen those in quite a while

static schooner

Why is the sink on the floor? 🙂

clear ferry
#

I hated Georgia toilets

static schooner
#

Older houses there are still using 3.5g per flush toilets

#

Otherwise, there's nothing special about Georgia

forest edge
#

they were too tall off the floor, he had to use a kiddie step which made him feel inferior

#

course had he went to red robin and ate fries with campfire sauce he might have grown some..

forest edge

clear ferry
static schooner
#

sounds like you have concerns about a specific place. It's a big state

#

That one public restroom sucked... perhaps

clear ferry
#

Well, it was like that in all restaurants, offices and malls i visited

#

And my hotel

#

So I assumed it was a southern state thing

#

As I've never seen it up north

forest edge
#

I will say some of the public long oblong shaped toilets do suck. Not even sure how they even came up with a 5ft long toilet to begin with

I haven't seen those tall urinals in any new construction anywhere

clear ferry

The water level and the stall cracks was the most worrying though

static schooner

I lived in Atlanta for for 17 years

clear ferry

#

This is the largest cracks I've seen anywhere in northern Europe

static schooner
#

You may have identified a US vs Europe thing (of which there are many), but I don't think it says anything about US regions

#

Having lived in many of them

clear ferry
#

No idea, I never saw that water level or stall cracks in new Jersey, new York, or Washington though

#

And Georgia is the only southern state I've been to

we have established that a) Taller toilets are better b) German toilets are weird c) Toilets in Atlanta may or may not have too much water for atx's parts to remain dry d) the Coriolis effect does not, indeed, make toilets swirl in the opposite direction in teh southern hemisphere

And atx seems particularly concerned about gaps in stalls where his potentially nefarious activities may be on public display

I have a couple of bidets. They're great. Got the liking for them while travelling on a Japanese ship.

I would think they'd be even more awkward when the water is pushing the boat around

the standalone ones

forest edge
# clear ferry

Europeans are infamous for being peeping toms (not a joke) so I would understand the tight tolerances for the stalls there. Here it's not really an issue. If you saw someone peeking through that gap trying to size up your member they wouldn't make it very far before getting caught

#

that's not to say we don't have our fair share of sicko's, it's just they are smart enough to not spend all day in pubic bathrooms trying to peek through that gap

low harness

50% petroleum oil and 50% whale oil.

That seems accurate

static schooner

my softener stopped sucking up brine from the brine tank and I've realized how unpleasant the hard water is over the past few days

last cedar
#

But like, first time I was on Gotland I vowed to never drink the tap water again. I had to make sure I wasn't drinking raw sewage

#

We have a little "kalk", wondering about a water softener edit might not be a softner that is required

Should really actually measure it

I tried to lookup the water quality in my area, and they had some large print stating _if anyone tells you you need a water filter, look at this webpage, noone needs a water filter in Norway _

@clear ferry Norway has always sounded nice. I see efficiency there with things like public works (complicated bridge with intersection replaced overnight because an important railroad is involved? no problem!) and it's impressive to me.

clear ferry

We aren't that efficient, but we can be dogekek

# forest edge i shit on toilets, toilets can have many names

A good, and quantitively elderly, friend of mine told me tonight that his wife, Pat, was good at saving money. And that they spent some of Pat's savings on the septic system that they have.

I immediately replied "I'll have to remember to say 'Thanks!' to Pat the next time I visit and take a shit all over her savings."

#

@clear ferry how did you stray into working on what we now call "big iron"?

#

(which is separate from "mainframes," i think: PA-RISC is usually running Unix, like anything else, right? I mention this because I know one old dude who still programs mainframes, with mainframe methods, and what I learn from talking to him is that those methods are simply robust)

clear ferry
#

Perchance

#

I work with any Unix system from dec/Compaq/hp

#

Any most flavours of Linux

#

I don't touch mainframes thankfully

#

I'm not insane

pearl gust
#

Mainframe mentality takes Unix "everything is a file" mentality down the tiniest degree: We don't write a record to RAM, because RAM can't be trusted. So we write it out to storage (with replication), and we require confirmation that the write is done properly.

For every fucking write.

#

It's good, I think, for some things. I want my money in my bank to be held to these standards, but I cannot afford that for my own bank.

clear ferry
#

Only reason mainframe still exists is because someone doesn't bother rewriting code from 1973

#

And IBM loves it

pearl gust
#

IBM is a tiny shrivel of what they once were.

clear ferry
#

Yes, but mainframes are 80+% of their revenue

pearl gust
#

Eh? Well, then: Some things never change.

#

And I should learn some FORTRAN or COBOL.

clear ferry
#

Last customer i have with it payed $1.2m for the smallest box, and $1.2m a year in licences

#

And they have three of those

#

We offered to move them to hpux with ROI in less than 6 months, not interested

pearl gust
#

The thing they've had since 1978 still works, and they want nothing to change -- at any expense.

clear ferry
#

Only 78? That is optimistic

#

Also, who would take them skiing in the Alps twice a year?

pearl gust
#

The person I call "boss" for the past 20 years has a habit of being friendly on the golf course. I've heard stories of big kickbacks, some of them from him directly. It happens.

#

I'm not in sales. I just make stuff work.

forest edge
pearl gust
clear ferry
#

Well, wherever the systems break the have to call a guy in his 80s who has been retired for 20 years

#

Curious how long that can last

forest edge
#

if the system breaks

#

i mean if it's been chugging along just fine for several decades already..

pearl gust
#

But it must break.

#

Everything fails. Entropy is a thing.

forest edge
#

why bomb shelters stock spares

pearl gust
#

It may fail due to a programming error in 1943, or it may fail due to a migration error, or it may fail due to a hardware disruption.

clear ferry
#

It breaks every few years

#

As most things do

forest edge
#

the more simplified something is the longer it lasts

#

now finding replacement parts for older stuff is yea hard, more so because companies don't want things to last and they want replacement

pearl gust
#

The oldest system I take care of is a radio dispatch system that also deals with a fuckton of jail doors and intercoms. It was designed in the 70s, sold in the 80s, and updated in the 90s and 2000s. We have the latest rev, which is circa 2008.

I'm trained on it, I installed it back in 2008, and I know it as well as I can.

When it fails, I don't have anyone to fall back on. If I, myself, can't figure it out then: It's all fucked.

forest edge
#

a lot of that stuff is just simply yanking out burned pieces and replacing

#

some of of it still gets parts made. like the old ham radio parts

clear ferry
#

There is roughly 15 products in currently the only one in country that works with

pearl gust
#

These are very particular parts that fit into a backplane with two TDM buses. We have some spare parts, but nothing about it is like buying parts for a Volkswagen.

forest edge
#

@clear ferryyou are the very last person to ever complain about running old shit.. not only do you already but as much as you gloat about energy prices being cheap you have no room to complain over something using 3-5x more energy than it's modren counterpart lol

clear ferry
#

I wish we were back to $0.001 per kWh

pearl gust
forest edge
#

why?

clear ferry
#

100a12v is pretty substantial

pearl gust
#

Because it fit into a particular rack-mount PSU subchassis in that particular system (custom chassis are expensive), and allowed it to integrate with the existing system (with roots in the 1970s).

forest edge
#

no why not want to see the invoice?

pearl gust
#

With voltage monitoring and battery charging and a few other things we take for granted, but they were Hot Shit in 1970 whatever.

forest edge
#

of all the parts the psu was probably the easiest to make lol

pearl gust
#

I don't want to see that I was only paid $400 for a thing that costs $32,000.

#

I just... I don't want to see that.

forest edge
#

lol

#

well anything commercial adds a few multipliers to the sticker price

clear ferry
#

Commercial isn't expensive

#

Proprietary is

forest edge
#

half the time it's the same thing

clear ferry
#

Only in the land of the "free"

forest edge
#

you keep saying that but everything you ever worked with or had was our hand me downs

#

"Man that thing sucks!" "eh, we'll just ship it to Norway"

pearl gust
#

harsh bro

pearl gust
#

But I agree: Proprietary is expensive. COTS can be cheap. The particular system I've referred to is being slowly dismantled and replaced with a different proprietary system, though.

And at least with this replacement, unlike the original, they have not yet flown anyone in from Canada to tell us that they're ending support before we even finish installing and troubleshooting it.

pearl gust
#

(They really did send a guy to tell us it was dead before we ever finished. It was fucking terrible.)

#

Anyhoo, I've kept it alive for 14 years with no support. I'll keep it kickin' even if there are absurd invoices for power supplies.

#

(Or not! I don't care what the invoice says. I just need it to work.)

#

@clear ferry can I post memes here once I get rid of this horrible green newb label?

Please use imgur or other image sharing web sites, and share the link here.

Image posting is blocked in most channels to discourage people from sharing text as images. Sharing text as images assumes that everybody sees the world as you do, which isn't the case. Some people are colour blind, or have visual impairment that means they can't make sense of an image of text.

Zombu, glad your store survived. Sorry to hear that it happened, but happy to hear it was minimal due to HA.

how are ya man

#

yeah i was surprised the sensors fired up the vents

peak cloud
#

I am doing well. Had a crazy party last night…feeling the after effects right now lol.

dry cairn
#

as soon as the fire exploded all sensors kicked on and turned on the venting system

#

it wasnt designed for that but it worked

peak cloud
#

That’s crazy. What was the automation that saved it?

dry cairn
#

it was designed to turn the vent and hood system to full blast when temp goes over 100f to prevent employees from keeling over from heat

peak cloud
#

If it were in Texas it would have triggered 49 out of the last 50 days

dry cairn
#

oh its been going on and off here

#

its a kitchen its always hot as hell

#

but the venting system sucked the flames in and out the stack

#

which kept the flames from coming out of the steel enclosure

#

it completely demolished and melted the stainless steel hood and the steel lining in the chimney

#

so over 1200C

#

so that saved the building

#

oh shit there is tinkler

#

everyone is still here huh
