Interesting in the last podcast that the triggering is slower on Conbee than the hue bridge, moving to zigbee2mqtt is definitely more reliable and faster than the hue bridge
@queen mirage you actually notice a speed difference? I've only ever used the bridge but I can't imagine it being much faster
Either way, I prefer using the bridge anyway so that my lighting system isn't down when home assistant is
It is probably faster because I get the Xiaomi ones in a mesh with the ZigBee bulbs, while before it was Xiaomi hub for the sensors, hue hub for tradfri and hue bulbs
O I C
I C U
Just found it interesting that Conbee appeared to be a step backwards
I have only used zha and zigbee2mqtt
Plus native hubs
I need to look more at calendar integrations
I don't use it for automating
But I need to start try prioritize getting my smart greenhouse up and running
No killing is going to take place on my part. 🙂
Thanks for the shout out! The card picker is all Zacks fantastic work, though.
Hi! How can I download Home Assistant Podcast episodes in AntennaPod (Android 5.0.1)? I am getting the following error:
IO Error: java.security.CertPathValidatorException: Trust anchor for certification path not found.
Android 5? What is this? 2014?
@queen mirage I was somewhat open to getting into a bad community, but you took it up to 11.
@alvarezp#7184 most application developers stopped supporting 5 within the last few years, it is not a wild guess that there will be problems running a 6 year old operating system
jea.. sorry - I instantly think on https://metro.co.uk/2018/01/10/what-is-the-snowflake-generation-7218112/
Listening to the 107 podcast. A lock that is not in HA? 😱😱😱😱😂
Crazy cat @flat ivy
Haha I know!
I thought I knew you @flat ivy ! 😂
Hi! How can I download Home Assistant Podcast episodes in AntennaPod (Android 5.0.1)? I am getting the following error:
@alvarezp#7184 hmm there might be a way to include newer encryption algorithms for HTTPS to it but I honestly have no idea
Lovely show guys, great job. Quentin was a great guest. Please let him know not to join his Hue bulbs to his Conbee. Or have him join us in #zigbee-archived first
Please let him know not to join his Hue bulbs to his Conbee
Why? Is that a ZHA thing?
It's a Hue thing. They are ZLL native, a subset of the Zigbee spec.
When joined to ZHA or deconz or zigbee2mqtt the Hue stuff switches to ZHA mode (Zigbee Home Automation)
They perform very poorly in this mode and degrade the entire network, especially in larger networks
They will silently drop messages due to their limited buffer space
@desert briar that's very strange.
I have all of my hue gear paired with deconz, and haven't got any issues like that.
I can see that the Hue bridge would be needed for things like Hue Syncing with music/TV, but I don't use those features
Wow, that's good to hear. AFAIK, deconz does everything the same at the protocol level. How large is your network?
Looking through the Hubitat / Smart Things documentation there is a lot of definitive information on the Hue issues....
... and as far as Hue Syncing / Entertainment.. there is a fairly new add-on that implements the protocol and it works with any sort of lights
oh wow that's cool!
My network is a mix of Xiaomi, Hue and Lightify with about 30-40 bulbs I think
Yeah, looks very cool. Have not played with it yet. They want to get to the point where they are injecting direct zigbee packets to Hue bulbs at full speed so it's directly comparable to the real thing
@desert briar i haven't noticed any issues like what you describe and I have a similar setup to @blazing prawn the network is responsive and stable haven't lost lights even once
In general I haven't seen many people have issues with bigger hue networks. Is there a bigger thread about this somewhere you can share?
I have a close to 80 device ZigBee network, but only 7 or so hue bulbs
@sour pebble Does deconz talk ZLL to Hue?
That's the only scenario that makes sense to me. As SmartThings, Hubitat and the other HA zigbee solutions all only implement ZHA
@desert briar could be, Zigbee 3.0 (Z30), Zigbee Home Automation (ZHA) and Zigbee Light Link (ZLL) lights
Ooh, that could explain it then. And that's a significant feature advantage if that is the case
@desert briar what do you actually mean when you say five home assistant instances?
as in... why is more than one HA instance necessary, and at a very very high level, how are multiple HA instances set up and do they work together?
@eager pelican I'm personally running three, and I know @flat ivy has at least two
@eager pelican splitting up your fault domain is a big reason probably, one runs zwave, one runs zigbee, one runs just automations etc
makes sense with bigger installations where you have limited performance (rpi) or where you want multiple fault domains, but I would never go that route tbh
I assume something like MQTT is used where the different instances need to communicate?
there is the mqtt-statestream
Yep, MQTT is probably the best.
I've created a custom app-daemon app which pushes entities from one HASS instance over MQTT discovery. This way, I don't need to configure each sensor on all the hass nodes. As long as hass is setup to import MQTT entities, each node gets the device and can control it via the "owner" node
I use the home assistant remote plugin @queen mirage
Same here. https://github.com/lukas-hetzenecker/home-assistant-remote Works well @tepid vapor
A small comment about the Hue Bridge. It only supports ~50 devices so it is not that cumbersome to move all devices from it
Hey @blazing prawn @flat ivy , im not sure who manages hasspodcast.io but it seems to be missing the little tab icon when i view it
should have mentioned it while i was in the call today
ah yeah the favicon! Thanks @violet scaffold I'll add one in
No problem, it just sticks out a little when its open in my list of tabs
Haha so it’s good? Jk jk we’ll get it fixed 🙂
Thanks guys for another great podcast for HA 0.107. Normally I listen to it in the car when going to work, but due to WFH I had not listened it yet. Today I was working in the garden doing some heavy work and time flied when listening to the podcast 😄 Also cool to hear that Quentin is using the BMW Connected Drive integration. We have made a PR so you can send messages and POIs to your car as well, hopefully that will be in HA 0.109.
Keep up the good work Phil and Rowan 👍
Thanks @craggy notch!
cant wait to listen to the new podcast.... another drive down the road tomorrow so I will tune in then
i didnt even know about dark sky until it was purchased, I feel like I'm missing out
I'm so far behind on Podcasts it's not even funny!!!
No commuting which is the usual time I listen to Podcasts
its never too late @tepid vapor that just means that when you start commuting again, you have that many more to listen to!
Damn it @blazing prawn , why did you have to bring up presence detection on my episode, ive gone and jynxed myself. After mentioning my nmap scanner working perfectly it has now failed in the 107 to 108 update
Appears to be a shared issue
https://github.com/home-assistant/core/issues/33281
Haha sorry @violet scaffold
lol! oops
i miss yall
I'm doing a little publicity thing on twitter for a company that gives a 30 day free trial of their energy modeling software. If anyone cared to retweet, that would be sweet. https://twitter.com/solardiscord/status/1252427973560430592
this software does economic modeling equivalent to adequate financial modeling for professional use. Like what a proper engineering economics class would teach. What is really interesting about it is that it could be used to model the cost-effectiveness of Home Assistant for commercial application. I think a 3-4 year payback could be acheived by decent HA implementers.
Which would complement, but also outperform, the solar battery industry... which is a better industry than the solar industry.
Also pulling together a really weird linkedIn group https://www.linkedin.com/groups/13849270/
Home Assistant should have a virtual graveyard of all the reputable smart home platforms that have gone before
Abode is really nice but its best quality is that it integrates with HomeAssistant
Hey @eager pelican
So does that software run inside someones house, or in the cloud?
well its cloud but not in a way that would intrude in any way our imaginations would run
more like "dont do this on google sheets"
ive done it on google sheets. It's slow but possible.
but say you have an energy meter
and tell your electronics not to draw more than 10kW of power
so they turn on and off as not to
and you are in Georgia and you buy electricity from Georgia Power and have their real time value of electricity rate structure
Georgia State, not the country
ETB will do good enough financial modeling to get you a loan
Literally financial modeling that looks exactly like my college homework in engineering economics got schwifty with my optimization professor Bruun, who last departed to Denmark?
If you have 15-30 minute utility data, its worth the free trial.
It helps you figure out how much you can hack a variable rate bill.
haha thanks @urban pasture
Finally catching up with the podcasts, zigbee2mqtt supports Osram and Even firmware upgrades for it now
Yeah, zigbee2mqtt is moving fast
And koenkk is really responsive
I have a 80ish device network, and had performance issues, he implemented a fix in less then a day
They are working of Philips hue firmware upgrades too, but Philips releases them obfuscated, so figuring out how to grab them still
Ah right
Great to hear performance is on the agenda. Unfortunately it was too big of an issue for me, so I moved over to Deconz and won't look back
I've upgraded 20ish of my tradfri bulbs with it already
Still have my CC2531's on my desk collecting dust
But good to know I can use them to upgrade the firmware of devices soon if needed
Cc1352 here, ready for sub GHz ZigBee
Just finished my latest card which is HA Podcast
scraping https://hasspodcast.io/feed/podcast for the 5 latest podcasts urls and their titles, which is displayed in a entity card.
Service call then on double click to then play the podcast on my google home mini, works a treat!
Also I love Quentins enthusiasm, he should join us on discord
@queen mirage They just added Hue to zigbee2mqtt for firmware updates too
and I just PR'ed adding Sengled firmware updates for them too
Oh nice
Yeah, really excited to see more firmware files be disseminated
lack of fw updates was a pain point there -- having to keep old proprietary hub around and unpair / re-pair would be a total pain
@hot dock FYI https://github.com/iantrich/podcast-card
Noob here - would y'all recommend starting at the beginning of the podcast or listening to a particular episode or two first?
@hot dock nice one! Would love to see it in action if you have it hosted somewhere
@mighty parrot i started at the beginning, I had a lot of driving at work at the time, like 6 hours each way, so got a lot of podcasts done
@obtuse mesa hey! i seen your integration which got me started with all this, however it looked like gpodder was out of date (think January was the last one on there)
Otherwise would have stuck to that!
@blazing prawn I'm running it on my RPI, is there a way of posting images on here ? (new to discord 😄 )
Please use imgur or other image sharing web sites, and share the link here.
@mighty parrot depends! The episodes are structured with updates of that release first (newer ones are more relevant) and then a guest after talking about something cool they did or some usecases, or a developer; we also have a couple of spotlight eps where we talk about specific topics in depth
@flat ivy Ooo spotlight episodes sound exactly like what I am looking for! Is there a list of them somewhere?
@mighty parrot I'd start with the latest episode but absolutely step back and listen to all the other episodes. The inspiration, creativity and ideas you can get from each episode is wonderful. @flat ivy and @blazing prawn do a wonderful job at producing the podcast!
Producing? Are you sure they aren't just AI generating relevant content @sonic hamlet ?
Took me a while to realize it was you @flat ivy on the yamlgate podcast, your mic seemed different from previous podcasts
Lol good catch 😛 that’s because it was
Usually I use a Blue Yeti, but I used my headphones for the last 2
Btw, I hate hearing my own voice, so I avoid listening to recordings of myself if I record trainings
Haha I hate it as well
or narcissist
those aren't mutually exclusive!
Hey guys. Re: the transitions in scenes. They were removed because it didn't make sense the way they worked before. Scenes should store the state, but not the way to get there.
That became even more important once you were able to programmatically create scenes.
Say you spill your drink, so you push the panic button which stores the current light state and then turns all the lights to max. Then when you've cleaned up and push the return button, some lights return to the previous setting immediately, and some transition there over 5 minutes, because that's how you had set it up before - hours ago. Makes for a terrible user experience.
The feature was "readded" as soon as someone realized that it would make sense to have a transition option for the call_scene service. That way, the transition is not stored with the scene, but a function of how to get to the scene. So it's not the same feature being added back, it's a similar feature being implemented.
I've started listening from the beginning and even though some of the older stuff is obsolete, it's still making the gears turn on what's possible. Thanks for doing an awesome job!A question I have is I have a few different reasons why I'd like HA to be accessible from the outside internet and I keep hearing there's something that you can use to check if it's unsecure or not. What is the name of it? I can't catch it in the podcast. I think I've done everything to secure it but I want to make sure.
if you've forwarded the traffic with https and a valid SSL certificate, and you have 2FA enabled you are good enough for most
Ok, no 2FA yet. I have Let's Encrypt with DuckDNS going now so that gives me the https and SSL
Then do 2FA
Thanks @sick mango that does indeed make sense! Also, thanks for the idea of a "panic" button. I like it
@long cypress don't forget that a Nabu Casa subscription gets you Home Assistant Cloud, which covers all the SSL certificates and forwarding for you, and much more secure than forwarding a port via your router
It's so much easier with this podcast ©®™
I drove a whole 10k today. I filled up the car a month ago, and the fuel gauge still hasn't moved from the top!
Does anyone know if someone compiled the failed cloud services to a hall-of-shame list?
haven't seen one like that, would be a good idea. like the google graveyard
started listening to the podcast awesome content. I've already got a ton of ideas for my gmc motorhome (502 ci engine and a dual 10 core 20 thread xeon server along with many other fun things)
(and a decent size 3D printer which is set up to print while driving
oh and i ordered 100 esp32s that have a lipo controller built in im down to about 90 gonna try to use them for most of my RV sensors
How do you find your print quality when printing while driving?
i have it on 3 different types of foam that takes care of any vibration
and the gmc is a full airbag system its known as the smoothest motorhome ever released
its kinda like a well handling boat haha
lol never heard of the google graveyard
https://killedbygoogle.com/
Fu - hangouts is my #1 chat program
I wonder how may projects they have spawned that people don't even remember come from google/alphabet. Like Sketchup.
oh man sketchup is amazing
is the guy from episode 66 here??
id love to talk about the home asistant tiny home stuff!
@latent dune do you mean Mat? From the latest episode?
Don't think he is on Discord, but if you send us an email to feedback@hasspodcast I can forward it on to him to put you in touch
ok cool
im doing my an " RV Assistant"
using my layout of my 77 GMC and also making a 3d printing farm
oooh very nice!
yeah im probably running a vm on my server where my propane tank used to be haha
LOL
also i love the podcast!
Thanks! We love making it
im part of the makerz and sometimes the mini pc show on the podnutz network
i love anything tech and making haha
Oh very nice! Well if you ever want to come on and get grilled by us let me know 😉
id love that! once im a little further with home assistant hahaha
for sure
@latent dune if you haven't already, you might want to listen to the tiny home episode; i know its not the same as a motor home..but its kinda close? i guess? https://hasspodcast.io/sp004/ have a listen if you haven't yet
oh perfect!
ill listen i just started listening to the show haha
thats perfect thank you!
about 5 mins in but would you guys want to jump on a call? this is a very interesting project
this is the rv im building
i have a t420 server, 39 100ah lithium phospate battteries, (900ah at 12v) an FT5 3d printer
and also i have almost 100 esp32s, and a try screen desk along as well as a bunch of pis that can be used
most things im doing will be 99% custom such as switchs 3d printed panels and stuff like that
That looks awesome @latent dune
i love this RV the best one ever manufactured in my oppinion
yeah my grandparents had one so i jumped on the chance to get one
its from 77 but has a 2013 8.1 L fuel injected engine haha
Quite a few guests from Oceania lately, where are my European guests
Listen to today’s! Fellow Canadian 😄
Goddamnit!! Stop releasing Podcasts while I'm still not caught up!!

Really dug the 0.109 episode. The whole CNC thing was really interesting. I love hearing the unique use cases you guys find. I wish I still had my HA aquarium still up, lol.
Sounds like you need to put the aquarium back up @night knoll
I sometimes think if I ever get to own my own home, I would end up doing things like buying an aquarium just so I could have something else integrated into Home Assistant
Finally after two years the whole reason I installed HA is complete , I wanted to create this for my daughter before she was born, and voila, HA controlled lamp with wled + ws2812 and hoping to get it to work with a lightning API to display lightning in real time
awesome!
@queen mirage that looks really slick
Video doesn't do it justice though
And the effects of wled were made for this design
i never saw pink lighting thou
Here are how the wallmotes are being put to use in the boomer retirement lakehouse: https://imgur.com/a/Wb9HfXY
The customers were so kind as to spring for the Aeotec wallmotes. Programming them has been... well... a good learning experience!
@eager pelican I have one of these in a cupboard somewhere I haven't linked up yet. How did you connect it to HASS?
you have to modify the zwcfg
then you have to use automations based on zwave scenes which are not HA scenes
Ah right I use Vera so won't have that nonsense 😛
and no sliding
i need to look into vera
i wonder what it would be like on the vera
so you do what you can in vera first and then pull into HA and take it from there?
@eager pelican there's a pretty good integration with Vera. All my Z-wave devices are added in there as a hub, and come through to Home Assistant. All logic and automations sits with Home Assistant. I believe things like button presses will come through as home assistant "events" which can then be actioned on. Although haven't tested that yet
does the new zwave integration support the 'motes yet?
i dont know. on the old integration, everything is based on a zwave.scene_activated event being fired at a button press
@eager pelican any example of how to modify the zwcfg?
its in the device specific instructions of the official docs
command class 91
easiest to use terminal add-on to ha stop core and then modify in the file editor, then restart core.
I gotta say the dimming features added to HA in .106? make the wallmote much more accessible
just added a 40A Zwave heavy duty aeotec switch to a client's hot tub. they now have a smart hot tub (better energy management to fit their solar/battery
If you ever need a replacement host, I definitely belive you should bring back James Petersen. Your group dynamic was awesome!
@viscid palm absolutely agree. We had a great time with him
@blazing prawn thanks for reporting that CT bug on beta. That was a bit embarrassing. I had my groups disabled on dev environment and tests didn't catch it 🤷♂️
@sour pebble thanks for fixing it so quickly! 👏
Hey, as I said; it was an embarassing bug
But in general I don't like bugs, they tend to break stuff 🤷♂️
Love the podcast! Glad you guys covered Wemo's (terrible) decision to force cloud control. I suspect there is going to be a lot of plug replacements required in my future.
What’s the name of the sound bite you use for the cloud strikes again? It’s like a super powered sad trombone
Thanks @supple dragon
I personally don't own Wemo devices (but love Belkin's powerboards). But this just really annoyed me because of how they just treated their camera devices.
@woven iron 🤣 its called "Slap Stick Duck". It wasn't really the vibe I originally wanted, but I think it works quite well now. Reminds me of those classic silent movies of people doing stupid things, which fits quite nicely with what we cover.
Yeah I bought my Wemo plugs waay back in 2012 when they first launched. They’ve been working well since then and I don’t understand why after 8+ years Belkin felt the need to remove local control.
And to your point, by switching to cloud control only, why would anyone trust Belkin not to eventually kill the Wemo plugs if it shuts off their cloud services, after it’s exactly what happened to their cameras
exactly
Guess I’ll just have to hold on for at long as I can haha. At least the price of smart plugs has come way down from 2012 where I think I paid $60+ CAD for each
I've made 100% sure any cameras I've bought have semi decent on-vif support. Makes life easier!
I am creating a separate application from home assistant that runs on a raspberry pi - I want it to be accessible over the net, but will be selling to people that do not know DNS settings ect. Home Assistant's approach to the "cloud" with an account would be great - how hard would it be to re-create that idea?
@shrewd chasm My favorite dev response: depends. 😆 Home Assistant Cloud isn't trivial because it wraps multiple things – user authentication, remote access, remote endpoints, etc. – into a single concept. If all you're wanting to do is remote access, you might consider something like localtunnel (https://github.com/localtunnel/server) or ngrok (http://ngrok.com/).
Thanks for the latest podcast. I have to say I really enjoyed listening to someone so young doing so much and learning.
Ref 111 podcast, long live yaml Phil ;-) I don't use default config and I specify all the needed values in yaml
Also I want Nathan's morning routine, but my wife would kill me
as an American, the only part of the podcast that throws me off is 'Zed'
hahaha I try to make a point to say "Zed" 😉
If I ever interview JayZ I will be sure to call him Jay Zed
Only right!
I work with a US company, and the little language differences are always fun! On one of the first video conference meetings I was on, years ago, someone on the US side asked where a teammate was. I caused a bit of consternation when I said he was "Gone out for a fag"...
As a European non-native English speaker I’m always confused between spelling checkers that push for words like “organization” vs “organisation”
@pale frigate That just because the US folk can't spell and thought z is cooler than s 😄
Okay, so one of the podcast there was talk of buttons. I am interested in trying one but can't remember brand or make. Can someone help me out?
Xiaomi Aqara @merry kiln
I have a smart things button. Anyone know a way i can use it to pause an amazon alexa ?
@wheat crown might be able to use a Zigbee gateway (like Smartthings) and the Alexa Media Player custom component available in Hacs.
Push Button -> Smart Things -> Home Assistant -> Alexa Media Player Component -> Alexa
Hi
@blazing prawn thanks i will take a look at this option. seems like it should work.
Hey @blazing prawn I listened to the podcast for the first time yesterday and liked it. Just wanted to say that when your guest was talking about light switches being turned off i was screaming in my head "just use tape on the switch!" and i was so glad it got mentioned as a solution. Low-tech solutions are sometimes the best solutions.
I am still trying to get my alexa media player working the way i want. Anyone know how to pause resume music playback? It's in the media player card but need to control it on it's own.
never mind i found it. media_player.media_play media_player.media_pause
@uneven relic absolutely agree! I am currently looking at automating some drawer lights, so when a drawer opens a light comes on.
I could easily do this and integrate it with HASS and make it RGBW etc. But now I'm thinking about it, I just need something that turns on when opened, and there's heaps of out-of-the-box options for it. Sure I won't be able to make it voice controlled, but at least it will just work
@blazing prawn now there's an April Fools episode idea for next year, "High Tech, low Spec" and no Hass all episode
I found I was quite amused a couple of days ago when I got some dimmers from Ikea, 2 button. I spent an hour or so setting it up with Node Red so "On" and "Off" toggles the hallways lights, long press "on" (up) toggles upstairs lights and long press down "off" toggled the downstairs lights.
I stuck it to the bookshelf at the top of the stairs (we have many floors) and told the kids. My youngest went mad for it, thought it was the best thing since sliced bread. While I was watching him playing with it i turned around and just caught sight of the "dumb" light switch panel, with 1 for upstairs, 1 for the hallway and 1 for downstairs....
Reinventing the wheel.
haha totally! When I wanted to put some smart switches in for light overrides, my wife said "so we've taped over the switches and put in smart lights just for us to need to put another switch in again?!"
So that was a no. Just gave me more reason to ensure that Home Assistant never goes offline and the automations are always on point
Hi. Does anybody know in which episode „Automation by HA vs. Node Red“ was discussed last time? As the next release will be about HA automation this topic might be interesting again
In the latest episode, Adrian mentions holding something up to the cam for the viewers. Is there now a video version of the podcast?
@strong ridge not yet. We use webcams on our calls so we can see each other, but its still audio only
@blazing prawn BOOOOOOO!!! BOOOOOOO! Lol
is there a reason for not doing video
@ripe violet right now the platform we use to record the Podcast doesn't support recording the video stream. An alternative would be to do a live stream/broadcast, but then we might lose the quality of the Podcast in terms of editing and call quality.
Plus video can be a pita
Makes sense
ive got a question about floorplan what channel is best to ask it in?
oops i thought i was in the lounge haha
You are not far of @latent dune 😄 . But #general-archived is probably the best place
haha thanks
Hi guys. Great podcast. I love listening to it. You mentioned in episode 70 (0.113) about a UI, but I didn't catch it. Can you share if you remember? Thanks.. keep it up!
Was that the Soft UI? https://community.home-assistant.io/t/lovelace-soft-ui-simple-and-clean-lovelace-configuration/159357 I believe...
Also, https://hasspodcast.io/
Well, looks like Soft UI was ep. 68
Yes.. thank you!!
Is it podcast day?
@sick mango Just saw a link to the latest episode on Reddit!
We were a bit delayed this week because of the birthday, and timezones (my sleep is more important 😜 )
Following the size of the release I bet the podcast is four hours long. Am I right @blazing prawn?😂
@sour pebble very close!
great episode, guys! what an exciting week for HASS its been
Thanks @quaint linden it certainly has been
Really enjoyed this week’s podcast, especially the GPS tracker. I did something similar a few years ago after my motorcycle was stolen. I bought two SIM card trackers but pay-go SIM cards here in the US all have a monthly fee or cost and expiration date so there aren’t any that are actually pay-as-you-go. At least I couldn’t find any. I did find a workaround, though, and wrote an instructable for it, including a power supply out of retired laptop batteries and a switching unit to keep it from draining the bike’s battery. https://bit.ly/js-bikefinder
I heard about a low bps LTE for devices a while ago that was supposedly significantly cheaper. Did that ever see the light of day? LTE-M or something?
https://www.hologram.io/ is one i am familiar with which is relatively inexpensive
Is the podcast on anything but YouTube? When I close the app it pauses the podcast
@sour ermine we're on all the podcast players. If you can't find us somewhere let me know and I can take a look.
Ok cool thanks. Sounds interesting ill listen in today
who is listening to the latest podcast now? 🙂
i don't see any current :/
the latest is the one from 07/10/2020 (74) no?
perfect for a easy, relaxed Saturday morning
Oooh! Podcast!
Lol ”scriptomation”. I never thought that’d make it into the release notes.
You really nailed the point of it, btw. Sharing!
Doubt it matters, but in case it does, the podcast page shows the old "ctrl+P" shortcuts for quick bar. The new shortcuts are e and c:
(It's hard to retrain folks on shortcuts so trying to keep messaging consistent)
Haven't listened yet, but can't wait to today!
they also talk about the old ones in the podcast, not the new ones
Right. If they could just go ahead and re-record that'd be great
Whaaaaat! They changed the shortcut keys 😦
But they were perfect for me. Who wants to print their Home Assistant dashboard everyday?
Thanks for the heads up @unreal oar
The problem is actually the opposite!
People accidentally getting print dialog any time window loses focus
(Also lots of browser + os incompatibilities)
right that makes sense I guess. Such a shame
But I suspect we'll need to add shortcut customizability options as more shortcuts get added over time
Mostly because accessibility is hard
yeah that's right
(I liked cmnd+p too as it's 2nd nature by now. But I've quickly grown to prefer e and c. No modifier keys)
Anyway. Thanks for all your work on the podcast!!! I've only been able to listen to the first half so far
Thanks @unreal oar
Hey @blazing prawn , you said that you've talked about HA and web scraping on previous shows, do you have any idea which ones you have chatted about it on? Cheers
Hey @plain turtle
There were quite a few for a while there. The ADR that kicked it off was for release 0.98, which was episode 55 https://hasspodcast.io/ha055/
Every release after that for a while there had a whole bunch of integrations that were scrapped because they relied on webscraping
Thanks, just interested on the discussion! Ill give it a listen. Couldn't find any information with a quick google
no problem.
To be honest I don't think we dedicated much on the discussion, but I'm sure Rohan and I would have discussed it briefly at least and the reasoning behind it
There's a section dedicated in the release notes for that release here: https://www.home-assistant.io/blog/2019/08/28/release-98/ which probably links back to the Github requests for all the integrations that have been affected by it
Cool, yeah thought that was the reasoning.
Phil, really interested in the Zigbee Smart Meter tracking - have you got further details on the connection process?
(also melb based here)
Hey @quaint linden
Its a Rainforest Eagle. Need to find out which Distributor your power comes from. I am SE Melbourne, so UE is my distributor.
I then signed up for UE's data portal. Needed my meter serial number and NMI, which is found on your power bill. From there, I told UE the Rainforest Mac Address and pairing key, and then UE sent a request to my meter to go into pairing mode. 8 hours later it connected and is sending data over MQTT into HASS.
https://rainforestautomation.com/state-of-victoria-residents/
thanks @blazing prawn
it was funny you hadn't heard of water softening too... Melbourne is one of the few places that has great water processing - and by extension, no need for any water softening, like in the rest of the world (or other parts of Aust)
I get the podcast through rss. Will the podcast be in the .m4a/AAC format from now on or was that accidental?
@blazing prawn Podcast idea -- MajorNelson, Larry Hryb, the director of programming for Xbox live and @carmine inlet talking about the new integration -- is majornelson really running Home Assistant? https://www.reddit.com/r/homeassistant/comments/jju5et/0117_quick_bar_compact_header_a_yaml_editor_xbox/gagousx/
@desert briar - This wasn't really an official collaboration per se...
Amazing never the less! well done -- I see he commented on your video too, very cool!
He did? Where 👀
Ah, that wasn't my video 😛
I'm not on reddit, because hunterjm was already taken and I'm stubborn.
A long shot, but would be great exposure for HA if he wanted to be on the pod for a bit
I assume he just watches reddit for all xbox content perhaps then and doesn't have HA, but would be interesting either way
Tell him he needs a local api while you're at it
Slowly but surely there is a plot to migrate my employer’s high end rack mount battery over to HA and use Discord as our tech support
Rainforest Eagle is great but the aeotec energy meter has treated me all right. Energy monitoring is a zwave hog though.
Hey, guys 👍 Firstly thanks for all the hard work on the blog, it always inspires me to do something creative with my setup. I think I've got another contender for your hall of cloud shame! I have a few UK style TP-Link HS110 energy monitoring plugs which had been giving me some odd power readings that were throwing off my automations. On checking the Kasa app, I noticed that a new firmware update to 1.1.0 so I applied it to one plug and it promptly disappeared from the HA integration, never to reappear. I posted about it here: https://community.home-assistant.io/t/tp-link-hs110-smart-plug-disappears-after-latest-firmware-update/244229
Hey @waxen quest thanks for the heads up
I also have a HS-110 on my dishwasher, so this is very disappointing if that's the case. I'm going to try block mine from accessing the internet now 😦
Hi @blazing prawn , yeah I'm using your setup for making dumb dishwashers smart, but fortunately the HS-110 that I updated is only controlling a space heater that is rarely used. AFAIK, this issue only applies to UK plugs, but I could be wrong so paranoia is the default setting for this!
yeah 100%
Question - have you all done a podcast on the pros/cons of the various install options for HA? I'm currently using Smartthings and Alexa but plan to move to HA soon. I'm through 20 episodes of the podcast and would like to make the install decision soon. I've 30 years of IT experience, have run PIs, Linux and Windows and can script and do some programming.
@loud echo what is holding you up from making a decision on installation choice?
Like supervised vs non and venv vs dockerized? They have a nifty info graphic if that helps... https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/330944238910963714/674323390550638620/unknown.png
I cracked up at the high kick ninja.
his limbs are not proportionate so he has to stand like that

@fluid sparrow thanks this will help
Oh dear, another cloud outage does a lobotomy on Google devices: https://www.theregister.com/2020/11/17/google_nest_outage/ If only there was some software that could give you local control of your IoT devices..........🤷♂️
if only! i love this trend of owning nothing, service based solutions :/
I find ridiculous that nest cameras don't allow to locally save your streams...
if only! i love this trend of owning nothing, service based solutions :/
@plucky galleon I'd say outsourcing is a fairly common consequence of specialzation
Just listening to the latest podcast where it was mentioned about wanting the ability to duplicate automations - That was introduced in 0.115 FYI ☺️
https://www.home-assistant.io/blog/2020/09/17/release-115/#automation--scripts-updates
Ability to duplicate scripts in the UI was added in 0.118 based on the automations work which I'm sure is what they were referring to (I have not yet listened)
Yep! Sean clarified what he meant after the recording, and it sure does exist 🙂
@blazing prawn Is it possible to do a special edition on Video ML? This is a super interesting area that I feel once we get it right will accelerate HA to another level.
The challenge is that we seem to have 3 different systems competing at the moment, a discussion around this would be super interesting
These are only the 3 that I know about; all are very interesting. But where do we see this going, and how will it impact HA?
would you consider doods another? https://github.com/snowzach/doods Its not live-feed based like frigate is though
@waxen quest
Probably yes, I'm thinking a big picture discussion about video ML in HA.
Also have the built-in TensorFlow component, which I talked about in Episode 47: https://hasspodcast.io/ha047/
@blazing prawn Just listened to the 118 episode. You mentioned quick bar not loading for you after reloading lovelace. Is that still an issue?
got ya. for me i went the frigate route because i wanted a realtime feed with cool boxes drawn around objects 🙂 I have a coral edgetpu for it. Both the doods and frigate devs are awesome though
All good now. Once I upgraded to the latest beta/release the quick bar started working again. So must have been an issue with the beta build I was running or a cache somewhere
Just found another one...
https://github.com/robmarkcole/HASS-Deepstack-face
So much video ML happening!!!
So many coming out now!
I'd find an overview of them all in a podcast really useful.
@lament moth "I try all the neural networks / object detection packages so you don't have to ^^"'🤞
First glance (on my phone) these appear to just be the ML layer. How/what do you use to record? Blue Iris seems to be the primary “polished” software I’ve come across.
It depends on the system. Some of them are including that capability.
I noticed that Frigate is looking to add DVR capabilities.
Current frigate has basic DVR abilities, and he's write support for the HA media browser feature
Heey youuu guuuuuuuuuys /gif
Phil how goes?
I moved to philly and I tell you, it is 100% better than Mississippi (although there are more than a few dozen fine ppl in the sip)
Good mate. Starting to get warmer down under finally
While I am no longer pursuing levll, there has never been more demand for it
Warmer? Which side of the planet are you on?
It’s warmer when I wear my coat around these parts
The other side ;)
Honestly, with global warming, I’d rather be on the cold side
I am slowly nudging my employer towards embracing HA as an energy management product
Because... you need an app for all things
As the front end as well?
Right
Which means not a front end for the client
But I think that is an asset
Manufacturers should not want front ends
Really we just need a great modbus thing
And HA might have that but I haven’t been able to clear my schedule yet to work on it
Might as in there are modbus integrations already and we do modbus communication
But I haven’t had time to implement
The furthest I’ve gone is there’s a cana kit in my desk drawer at work
And all these energy companies are still working on their own gateways in their own communication systems and their own apps but
Apps should have a very specific function and a home automation platform should have a very generic function
Yep
But also apps are not good for 5 to 10 second automation and so is home assistant
So it’s not just one good thing it’s two or more
From a manufactures perspective, any good idea you want to own so that’s the hurdle
But the owner of the company I work for is really smart and she says with respect to another company that they really just need to charge licensing fees
And if nabu casa were to charge licensing fees to provide better programming services to manufacturers that would be an interesting step forward
But more specifically I still don’t know of a better energy management platform then home assistant
Because energy management Has to be local
It’s not actually possible for it to be cloud-based
As a starting point I think will try to integrate our battery using the modbus thing, But ultimately I want them to develop a formal integration like not even a plug in my car integration because they wouldn’t be the first energy related service to have one but everyone else’s cloud-based
I love discord by the way, is there direct integration of discord within home assistant?
So my idea is a cheap Lumin
A $6k system can be brought down to under $1k
Or under $500 parts
All the hot air blowers don’t admit you only need to smartly control a few loads, not everything.
But lumin is correct in that it needs to be mostly hardwired
But
Corporately speaking
I’d like my battery manufacturer to support nabu and get some programming help in return
Interesting
I think there is actually
It would be really interesting to learn more about what those functionalities could do from actual users of those functionalities
Into be honest I need to learn more about programming within Discord because I could do a little bit of slack but I’m at a loss with discord bots
So I’d love to listen to what users are doing with discord within home assistant and that would totally be playing into the crowd
Or is it playing Into the cloud? I can’t keep up with hipsters
Being able to discord chat directly within home assistant would be Cray Cray
Hi @blazing prawn wanted to let you know - I borrowed from your idea about more granular presence (https://philhawthorne.com/making-home-assistants-presence-detection-not-so-binary/) and built a similar state machine inside AppDaemon with Python (https://github.com/pa-wills/Home-Assistant-Config/blob/feature-presenceOccupancy/appdaemon/apps/presenceOccupancy.py). Slightly different to your implementation, but seems to work. Thank you for the idea, and love the podcast mate, keep it up.
Nice one @proper tiger!
nice! that's great @proper tiger
@flat ivy @blazing prawn just wanted to say I have been listening to your podcast since the begining and really enjoy it you guys are doing a fantastic job ....Not sure if you guys are aware of this not being in europe but I just came across this and thought it would be good to pass on to listerners ...lidl ..a supermarket chain across europe has launched its own smart home products they are zigbee, super cheap and easy to add to a Hue system and also easy to intergrate with homeassitant ...just got myself a ton of led 2 m strips £14 each ..here is a link to the UK website https://www.lidl.co.uk/en/c/smart-home/c1693/w1
I think they're rebadged tuya tbh. Interesting though that lidl have them registered / listed on the zigbee alliance website though!
It's more than what I can say about Hive.
Nice that’s awesome! @gloomy compass
@queen flume that’s not a bad thing!
@flat ivy, @blazing prawn could I suggest that links in the text for each podcast are marked up as such? This would mean players like Antennapod could open them for us. lol it'd also mean I don't have to copy and paste 😉
I'd add screenshots of what I mean if I could 😂
Hmm I believe they are linked on the main notes let me check the XML
So how to get to the main notes from the podcast player without having to copy and paste the link?
Hey @queen flume
Podcasts are a beast when it comes to things like standards. Most players will see the links and automatically link them (iTunes etc). Some require that they be in html link format.
Problem is some players don't support html and will display it all as plain text.
I'll see if I can stalk some other podcasts to see how they do it to get around it all
Thanks. If it helps "Developer Tea", "Lexicon Valley", and "Irish History Podcast" all display clickable links in one way or another in the player that I'm using.
Thanks @queen flume will check them out
Is there a HA podcast, or a podcast specific to this group?
HASS Podcast: https://hasspodcast.io/
Would be happy to discuss
IMHO the easy part is processing the images with the AI; the hard part is processing the results into a UX that you can control through HA; Motion-AI could be improved using blueprints to help abstract the automations; and the concept of a "smart camera" could be integrated as a platform, and it could be packaged with HACS. However, the objective is to produce something as simple, automated, and reliable as HA itself for a specific purpose. FWIW, the Motion-AI "solution" sends MQTT payloads of its results, e.g. annotation-performed, entity-detected, person-detected, ... which can be picked up by HA or an integration that would know how to process those payloads (including the video, annotations, etc..)
Would be nice to see the other solutions people have developed, e.g. Frigate
Will the live episode not be added as a regular podcast episode?
@long herald it sure will! Video of it will also be available on YouTube. Just waiting for it to finish its rendering 😉
Oh, good! 😄
I'm sitting here sick at home and would have liked to listen, but I'll have to be patient then 😄
haha! Well it just took 2 hours to render, and it has no sound :(
So back to start it again
one of those days 😄
nope, apparently no sound is coming out of my laptop, so that's a good sign for the recording being up very soon
Oooh! Podcast!
Has the podcast been considered doing in video form? Like the WAN show?
@plain turtle yeah we've thought about it. Right now because we're not in person recording/voice quality can take a hit if we do that (like we can hear in the latest episode).
But something we're definitely thinking about exploring in one form or another in the new year
Cool, yeah bit of a shame the last episode. I couldnt actually finish it, unfortunately the audio cutting out triggered a migrane every time I tried listening to it.
Oooh cutting out how? I guess with each of us talking over one another and someone getting dropped?
Ill have to message you Phil, Id love to come on the show to tell you about my projects
The guest, forget the name had some connection issues or something
Maybe stuttering would be a better word
Please do!
Ah yeah James did have a choppy mic, which might have been the platform too.
Dont have time right now to go into it, but long time HA user, whole home integrated. Currently designing a sailing boat overhaul, designing entire electrical system from scratch with HA intergration with everything
Sounds like something we're definitely going to enjoy diving deep into.
We probably won't be recording anything until the new year now, but feel free to either DM me or email feedback@hasspodcast.io and I can send you over some info to add you to our list
Sure ill DM you later. Yeah its definately something you could get lost in for hours :P
Fantastic work on the live podcast you guys. Super looking forward to James write up of the NFC tags for children credits!! I have a 6 and 4 year old and their school is now closed so I need all the help I can get.
I haven't had time to listen yet, but that sounds like a great idea. Similar boat here, with a 7 and 5 year old 🙂
yeah James has his home assistant install down to an art when it comes to parenting haha
Not up to date on the podcast. But may skip ahead to get to this when it's out!!!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hnTiyR746FM if you want to watch the (recorded) live episode on YT @lean oyster
Anyone else have a profile on kit.co (I think both Phil and Rohan do). Feeling bored and looking for inspiration 😉😂
Late reply but thanks a lot! 👍😁
Just found out about the existence of the podcast, very nice!
It sure is.
I listen to podcasts at work and have a bunch auto-download and put into a playlist. This means I sometimes have no idea what's gonna play next, and I always cheer up when I hear your theme music.
Haha thanks everyone 🙂
I'm listening to the "back catalogue" of episodes - working backwards to #1. 16 left to go and enjoying each one of them.
haha that's awesome @queen flume
you will listen to us get progressively worse at hosting while we tried to work things out
version .17: "we have sensors now!"
I think there was a throw-away comment about there being more bitcoin sensors than weather sensors in one of them! 😉
I did not catch the name of the baby monitoring product mentioned on the latest podcast. Possible to drop a link?
https://owletcare.com.au/ this is the one
(I'm sure there is an international site)
This is so cool.
hey @blazing prawn did you get your aqara button working with double-press?
Unfortunately haven't had a chance to try yet 😦
no worries, I've got a few of them setup now so let me know if you need a hand with it
Ah nice one! Did you get double-press working in yours?
yeah, i have a couple of the older models that only have single and double press, plus the smartthings ones which have single, double, long and temperature
So I'm now fully caught up on listening to all the Home Assistant podcasts - entire back catalog and current all listened to. Now what do I do? 😂😭
Put your knowledge into helping users on the forums 🙂
I listened to the last episode about the umbrella object detection. I tried something similar with trying to detect a gate being open or closed a few years ago. It didn’t go well which I’m not sure why exactly but the gate was far from the camera which is possibly why. I know this was all discussed on the forums and I think it was tensorflow that I was using with custom training.
ah that's interesting @unkempt ibex
Ahhh that’s neat ~ but too bad it didn’t go well @unkempt ibex 😦
Would it be possible to include an audio version of the release parties from YT as a podcast release?
@strong ridge maybe. We don't have anything to do with those, so we'd need permission from the big wigs to do re-publish those in our feed
Listen to the Self-Hosted podcast!
Subscribed, thanks!
Ooh. That's a fantastic idea
Owlet is great — is there a planned HA integration that I missed?
Ah, looks like there is, but only for the sock, not the camera. My little one outgrew the sock shortly after she turned a year.
@blazing prawn @flat ivy I just finished listening to all of your show from the past 4+ years. THanks for the committment to the community. I picked it up in the Fall. Working from home now so my podcast time is limited. Started listening before I built my HA install and was probably 20-40 shows in before I did so in Dec. So without having 4 years of experience, I know the HA history due to the show. Really appreciate the effort.
And I have a suggestion. Is there a Discord channel where other HA podcasters/YouTubers can announce their new episodes to the community?
Thanks @loud echo! 4 years?! My gosh you're right, almost there
Not that I'm aware, might be a good use case for a Discord bot or something to combine around
Could we encourage them to post in this channel? Or would you prefer to keep it focused on the "official" podcast?
is the podcast on spotify too?
thx
Finally had time in the car to catch up on the last few episodes - dammit @blazing prawn you had me laughing and screaming YES at the radio when talking about the bin collections - my updated code is at https://community.home-assistant.io/t/bin-waste-collection/55451/325?u=kablammonick ... had considered whether it was worthwhile trying to get it into HA or HACS but I'm only good at copy-pasting and marmalading code into something that sort of works.
Also re why other regions are so complicated - check this out (from the OG bindicator twitter thread) https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DeqZJJXWAAAhS3c?format=jpg&name=medium
oh, and how to justify a ~$400 spend on 3D printer...
my gosh that calendar
need to be a rocket scientist to work out which bloody bin to put out
very nice @simple drift
So there are all the colors in place but calendar tells which one to use?
bloody hell, remind me to never move to Dundee - think I'd need a full time job to understand that bin calendar
Guys, you mentioned in the last podcast that TP-Link are pulling their beta firmware for the Kasa UK HS100 and HS110 smart plugs to restore local access. The situation is not quite as bad as you may have thought as they are no longer pushing the problem firmware 1.1.0 to these devices either, so the issue should no longer arise. I've posted about their reply to me here: https://community.home-assistant.io/t/tp-link-hs110-smart-plug-disappears-after-latest-firmware-update/244229/211?u=sota
Interesting! Will have to dive deeper into this. Fingers crossed this will restore TP Link local access for everyone
Should be good news except for people who were upgraded to 1.1.0 which removed local access, and didn't get the upgrade to the beta 1.1.1 before it was pulled. They are now effectively abandoned by TP-Link 😠
100%.
That was a retrospective “how do I justify it to myself”
And yep, in the process of modifying an exisiting wemos case off thingiverse
A lot of money lol for a big bed lol
I love my printers only fdm but I’m itching to get an sla
I have an ft5 it’s great and 4 ender3s
Podcast but no blog post 🥺
you mean the hass release blog post?
Yeah 😁
Haha we're generally a few hours before the release. I'm in Australia (aka the future) after all 😉
Yep 😁
friggin time travellers
Pretty unfair tbh
Hi. Just wondering Phil if you (or anyone else who can remember) could tell me what tool you used to figure out what was slowing down your HA? (having a similar problem) Heard it mentioned in the podcast a while ago, but can't find it. Thanks!
I used py-spy
https://github.com/benfred/py-spy
I liked it because you can profile a process (like Home Assistant) running inside a docker container
Perfect, thank you very much.
Thanks @glad pond! Appreciate you listening to us 😄
Thanks so much for the podcast guys. I’m really enjoying new split between monthly release podcast and interview too as I tend to want to listen to each when I’m in different moods. Whatever happened to that British guest you had who was going to write a kids credit system with NFC tags. Any chance of a follow up?
Also a thanks for the podcast! I usually listen to it when falling asleep (not because it makes me tired, because it's interesting) and I usually go back and listen to older episodes when I'm done. Thanks for the many hours of entertainment :)
Thanks @zinc moat glad we can help put you to sleep 😅
That's @sonic hamlet
He's doing so much I'm sure he's gone way beyond just a credit system now.
Yeah that’s the one. Thanks Phil. Will keep an eye out on forums and git.
@zinc moat I do the same, mind you was a bit weird on the last podcast listening to my own voice!
Good for you for being able to do it! I still can’t haha
Just offering up an idea shamelessly stolen from the phproundtable podcast - would it help ease the workload if the shownotes was sourced or updateable through pull requests on github? The HomeAssistant podcast is excellent and this would be one way of potentially reducing risk of you guys getting burnout.
That's an interesting idea. Right now our site is hosted on WordPress, so doesn't lend well to pull requests.
The problem with the Podcast is it needs show notes done before the episode gets published, so when listeners go to check them they're in there already. Pull requests would be great for changes that might need to come after the episode is out and we receive feedback about it, but this rarely happens at the moment so I would guess the number of pull requests that would get raised would be pretty low
Cool. It just came to mind when I spotted some old episodes in my playback queue.
Hm... new episode on Wednesday (?), but I really need to mow the lawn Today 😦
If you mow the lawn on Wednesday, means you won't have to mow the lawn again for an extra day or so
Yeah... but I have a robot coming in in 2-5 days... so that may have been the last time
I just heard the part about the HX711 load sensor board. I had the exact same thing with my bed. I had to auto-tare the bed every day, but even then it was unreliable. I went for a completely new setup with four different HX711 boards, one for each leg of the bed. No improvement. Until I connected the E- pin to the GND pin on the board. Now it is really accurate! No drift, no spikes. I just soldered a small wire between the GND and the E- pin on the board. On some boards, one entire plate is connected to GND, so you can just scratch a bit around the E- pin and put a solder blob there. But if you want to be sure, just solder the wire. This was a lifesaver for me.
That's very interesting!
I haven't built this myself just yet, but made a note to myself based on the experiences the guy over at Everything Smart Home have had to reset or recalibrate the device every chance you get. I think he does it at the first point where 0 weight is detected - is that something that may be at help here?
For some reason I'm not seeing show notes for the latest episode, but some projects mentioned in half sentences captured my ears. Any way to find out more about "last sensor" (?) and "phil's washer"? 😄
I had a script that auto-calibrated my scales every 10 minutes when the total weight was close to zero and the first derivative was also close to zero. But after I grounded the E- pin, it's not needed. It's really rock steady.
I would assume so - I mean: technically there isn't much that can go wrong like this in that relatively simple piece of hw
But my setup is different now. I have four HX711s, one for each bed leg. Each leg has 2 load sensors connected in a Wheatstone bridge. The HX711 is really close to the sensors. The wires are about 4 cm long.
oh man - stop adding to my todo list, please 😄
I think that can also really help. Have the HX711 as close to the cells as possible.
I started playing with homeassistant back in december. My todo list is over a mbyte of bulletpoints (in plain text :D)
Link to my washer script should be up on hasspodcast.io, but yes the link you got is right.
As for the "last sensor" it is part of the Alexa Media Player component
oh hey Phil, thanks
thanks again for the podcast, it always feel like I'm at a nice and calm pub and listening to folks talking about neat stuff, while being on mute 😄
love it
haha that's the plan. Just a casual chat about Home Assistant and automations
well on target then, great job!
I think my implementation is not that harder than a regular one, except that you need to solder a few more wires. The rest is quite the same. I have designed a holder for the board and two load cells like this: https://i.imgur.com/0KZqps3.png. That greatly simplifies it.
Yeah. Same here. Love the podcast. It really motivates me to start working on my own setup!
Great to hear! I thought by now we would have heard it all, but its amazing how many interesting use cases are out there
By the way, why did you decide not to allow comments on hasspodcast.io under each episode?
Generally spam / moderation. Its something we've thought about, but for the moment we thought we'd leave it out.
@blazing prawn Hey, I really enjoy the podcast. I am interested in how Anthony is detecting which echo received a command to make location aware actions work better for more than just lights such as ceiling fans. He mentioned something about last sensor but I am not sure exactly what he is doing. Can someone point me in the right direction? (I just want to get away from having to put the room name into every command) thanks
Thanks John!
So there's two things I would suggest here.
First in your Alexa App, be sure to assign lights and your echo devices to respective rooms/groups. For example in my app, I have the kitchen which has my kitchen lights and the kitchen echo dot in. In the living room I have my echo show and living room lights all in the same group. This is all native in the Alexa app, outside of Home Assistant.
You can then just say to Alexa, "turn off the lights" and she will know based on which room your echo is assigned to which lights to control. As mentioned on the podcast, this only works with some devices, like lights.
For the second part, this is where Home Assistant comes into play.
There's the Alexa Media Player component available via hacs and documented here: https://github.com/custom-components/alexa_media_player
That integration will mark which amazon echo device was last spoken to. You can read how to do that here: https://github.com/custom-components/alexa_media_player/wiki#last-called-device
Anthony has then created a bunch of dummy input_boolean entities in Home Assistant, called things like "Channel Four", "Xbox" etc. When he tells Alexa to "turn on channel four", it will turn the input_boolean.channel_four entity in Home Assistant on/off. From there, an automation is fired to see which Amazon echo was used, and then based on that changes the channel on the applicable TV
@blazing prawn thanks Phil, it was teh Alexa Media Player component piece that I was missing. I will give it a shot.
For the bed presence if not already mentioned, I use those pressure sensitive resistor bands (just google SF15-600) and they work pretty well. I have one at each side of the bed and hooked them up to an ESP32 with esphome.
Hmm... I am finding it a bit of a hit or miss in our home with Google Home devices on which one picks up the commands - based on which device happens to answer. Not sure if Alexa is better at this, or if I just need to place my GH devices further apart. Or get a bigger apartment alternatively 😀
you can adjust the mic sensitivity on them individually
In the Google Home app, find the device, select the gear icon, select Audio, then select "Hey Google" Sensitivity.
Did you feel like watching the world burn while recording this episode? First the Amsterdamians not having cars, and then saying that Fahrenheit sucks and that Fahrenheit may be kind of OK?
lol I still can't believe @flat ivy thinks Fahrenheit is more accurate than celsius. I wonder if its like measurements, where the standard mile is actually set against the metric system anyway
It has higher resolution, with one F-degree being 1.8 C-degrees... I assumed that was what he was trying to say.
isn't that lower resolution? When we only have whole numbers, C will be more accurate on average (less quantization loss)
But a whole number change describes a smaller change in temperature in F than C. So that's higher resolution for the same numerical difference. Not that it actually matters...
oh right, I got it the wrong way around in my head for a moment there
I had to think it over three times. And I'm still not sure I'm right.
but hey
C is an SI unit. So mC is perfectly valid. What's the proper unit for F there? 😂
Let me stop you there
As a physicist this is one of the big problems with the Celcius scale (and Fahrenheit).
The Celcius scale has no absolute origin.
That means 2 °C is not 1 °C more than 1 °C, because that also implies that 2 °C is "twice as hot" as 1 °C.
2 °C is "one Celcius-degree" morehigher than 1 °C. Or 1 Kelvin more, because 275 K is 275/274 th as hot as 274 K.
Therefore, there also is no such thing as a mC, but there is a mK.
Today I learned
In everyday conversation there's nothing wrong with saying it's 5 degrees C warmer today than yesterday except it will make scientists cringe - which may be a good goal in itself - but don't get SI-prefixes into the mix.
Haha wow
It's kind of like how 50 % is not 10 % more than 40 %
But yes higher resolution is what I meant 😛
I learnt a lot about C vs F just now haha
Don’t get me wrong, I still prefer C 😛 just giving F the benefit of the doubt
If you want the difference between two temperatures expressed in F it's called a Rankine, btw.
ooo that’s cool didn’t know that either
My IT degree has taken me nowhere in this topic haha
Define: hot
You should know how common it is to do operations in transformed spaces. Especially simple linear transformations. And use replacement variables/units in them to know which one we are currently in
Celsius represent
F makes sense
That face when someone turns the radiator down to 6 mustangs while it's 42 big macs outside
exactly
I think I recall Phil saying you could setup room context aware with echo.
So "turn off the light" to alexa would turn off the light in that room, instead of having to say "turn of the kitchen light".
Is this an alexa app setup thing? I have some Sonos One's with alexa, but I can't seem to find a setting for that yet.
I helped my work make a thing that is.... pretty cool for home servers...
quality server rack with an integrated 48V bus for holding giant batteries and other 19" rack mount electronics
this is part of my quest to make home assistant an energy monitoring and control system
it seems the youtube video for the latest release is broken.
Could it be possible to check your audio levels and what not, latest level is super bass heavy. At least with phils audio.
As you're not doing it live, have you considered recording locally and then mixing it after?
There have been a few episodes now where it has been unbearable to listen to with audio issues, etc.
Seems to be ok for me
Yeah I got a new mic, and didn't test it out properly before we recorded this one. So my mic on this one is out of tune.
We record locally and then mix it all up, so it doesn't sound like we're recording a zoom call. If you can shoot me some examples of some audio issues in past episodes to feedback@hasspodcast, I'd be interested to take a look to see how I can make them better
Whoa there's a homeassistant podcast?? That is so coool! I'm definitely gonna check this out tomorrow
Hi Phil and Rohan,
You mentioned warmer-outside sensors during the last podcast. Here is super-simple sensor/automation that you can pilfer/adapt/improve. Thought you might enjoy. https://github.com/bryanbr23/-home-assistant-config/wiki/Super-Simple-Warmer-Outside----Close-Open-the-Windows
~Bryan
This is awesome!!
Hi Rohan and Phil,
I eagerly awaiting the next HA Conference, but don't want to wait until December or later. Have you ever considered a quarterly multi-panel/conference call to bring shorter topics to support the podcast? This would different from your current approach of release discussion/spotlight/1-person interview. Perhaps on a quarterly basis, tee-up with 2-3 people/topics (5-7 mins) might be interesting for others to learn new scenarios for automation.
Just curious,
~Bryan
Hey @waxen quest not a bad suggestion. @flat ivy and I have something in the works that might be able to sort of fill the gap, so stay tuned
The release parties sometimes have quick comments about upcoming things too. Just hearing the devs chat is very cool.
@plain turtle, I agree the audio imbalance between the hosts makes it difficult at times while listening in the car.
Hmm damn. I do try to normalize each person to the same level. Might have to see if there's another filter I can use for it.
Is it a difference between Rohan and I, or a difference with the guests?
Hi Phil, I must say, love the great work you both do. Your sound level is good but bassy or muffled and Rohan is very clear. When I up the volume to hear you, Rohan is vary sharp.
Just in the last episode? I stuffed up a setting on my new mic for that recording, so the next episode hopefully fixes that
All good, as ever looking forward to it?
Let me set the stage for my question. Sonos gets mentioned a lot on the podcast. I was upgrading our TV and soundbar. When we bought the house, it has 4 speakers on the ceiling. While looking for a surround sound receiver, a different path was suggested. It was pointed out that by the time I buy the receiver, center speakers, and etc I would be about the same investment if I did a Sonos Beam, then add an amp at a later date. Until I added the amp for the ceiling speakers, the Beam would just be a soundbar, but I could repurpose the Beam when the time comes to be the center speaker. We don't play that much music, but when entertaining, we would put the DirectTV on the appropriate channel and blackout the picture, then let the tv play music. Now we have switched to Youtube TV. Being a HA and the wifi streaming of the Sonos direct is very attractive, but not a must-have.
When I was explaining this to my coworker he said his dad had issues with Sonos dropping. When I went to the local electronic store to look at them, the salesperson said his was down. He said, well it will play for some time then quit. Of the 3 or 4 stores in the city, only one was working. I was just reaching out to those who have Sonos experience their thoughts?
I have Sonos in every room of my house and surround sound in my living room with an Arc, 2 ones and sub. They work well most of the time. If you have a lot wireless interference (neighbors etc...) it will not work as well. It's best to wire up (ethernet) at least one speaker or use a Sonos Boost. Everything wireless sucks in general in my opinion.
Agree. Just because Sonos can do wireless, doesn't mean you can't make it better with Ethernet. If you have a Sonos speaker right next to a free ethernet port, wire it up. The more the better
For reliability, ethernet is unbeatable. And PoE can be really useful to power things like cameras & WiFi APs.
Oh, that post is days old. Sorry 😦
According to telemetry 99.2% users has sun integration....
What about those 0.8%?
Do they hate Sun?
Do they live on different planet / dimension and found out that the default Sun doesn't work for them?
How can one not love sun?
I love sun... I would add second sun (entity) if I knew how.
I bet those 0.8% are either serial killers or vampires.
You'd think a vampire would want to know when the sun is shining....
🤔 good point
Werewolves prefer moon (only 3.2% users) but they don't necessary hate the sun either.
I guess "heliophobes" are actually a thing then.
well, maybe blind people don't need to know the sun position?
They just go to sleep when they get tired and live in one giant loop /s
hmm... I live in a giant post-pandemic loop 😖
but this brings interesting topic - how many blind ppl use HA. And are there any who actually setup it themselves
Might not be able to spell "sun".
Or their delete key doesn't work so they can't uncomment it?
We have a Spotlight episode with at least one person who runs Home Assistant and sets it up by himself
There could be a few users in the Arctic circle who the sun integration is useless for. Parts of the world where the sun sets at 11pm and rises at 1am
btw, I listened the podcast (sp006) and wow... that guy is really amazing.
I mean he event dabbles with lights despite his condition. (what is he Beethoven of home automation's?)
Would love stream of him working live on smh.
I bet he loves the sun as well despite
the newer intro music get's me everytime - for a split second each and every time I think oh bother, my headphones are only playing on the left channel 😦 😄 :D:D
haha!
I must unplug and stick back in my rtl-sdr ( https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B018PUYPCA/ ) and see if it might be recognised that I might use it without too much faff. it's literally just sitting on the kitchen floor beside my HA rpi4 collecting dust 🙄
why is it useless? You get up to 6 month of sun...
Lol yes but in terms of Home Assistant, all its going to say is above horizon or below horizon which for those users might not be worth it to have the sun integration loaded
Any ESP Home experts here? How do i implement a permanent monitoring routine in it ?
Might be best to ask in the ESP Home discord
Pinged them but no real response so far
Hey, I've been really interested by the podcast episode with Marc Alexander. Is there any place where we can have more information about how he implements in Home Assistant the automatisations shared during the episode?
Sure send us your questions through an email to feedback@hasspodcast.io and I'll forward it onto him
How many times they said 'letterbox' before I realized it was a mailbox and not a kitty bathroom...
Yes, that's where the letters are put in. Mailbox or "postbox" down under is where you send mail
I'm pretty sure we just have mailboxes that do all the things
"Down Under" aka Australia also accepts emails, tweets and other forms of communications 😉
We do! Sending letters is slowly becoming more expensive and slower now. The "postie" or mailman only comes twice a week to give you your letters, but everyday for your online shopping/parcels
Here I am, listening to the podcast without having seen the show notes and I hear my name and automation in the highlights.
Thanks @blazing prawn and @flat ivy !
Definitely enjoyed that one, Mike! Hope the kiddo’s are leaving you with some free time to do more of these automations 😂
Ha!... no.
I just loved the story about the toilet flush. It seemed bizarre at first but it makes sense for someone with limited mobility in their hands or other limbs.
Haha yea that was a good one. I was thinking: Does it come in zigbee?
I quite like the use of the car central locking actuator to lock the door as well
woah just joined this discord and never knew there was a home assistant podcast, very excited to listen to it!
It's great! The old episodes are great too if you skip the new feature listing and jump right into the interviews.
Shall do!
Done 🙂
Sorry If this is considered spam or promotion, but I listen to the podcast on shuffle, and they recently made it so you have to get a number of votes from listeners in order to unlock the community chat room for each podcast, if anyone's willing to toss their votes in so that we can get the community chat for shuffle I'd greatly appreciate it.
I know lots of us are primarily here on discord, but I really enjoy shuffle for the episode specific chat and time stamp comments in the episodes.
https://getshuffle.page.link/kntj
Episode 2021.11 is out. Spotify notifications are bit unreliable, could we get a bot ping here or something? 🙂
That's interesting! I think it depends when Spotify scrapes our feed for the latest episode
You can actually get HA to notify you https://www.home-assistant.io/integrations/feedreader/ 🙂
Oh nice touch, didn't know. Thanks!
Interesting intro music in the last episode.
What the fudge! That's so weird. Fixed on the podcast feed at least
This is the way...
Its always fun to tail the access logs and see how many Home Assistant instances are scraping our feed 🙂
If you know the requests per second and the scrape speed of HA, you could work out how many are subbed through an HA automation
hi all, I remember on a recent podcast there was mention of the next_alarm now allowing an offset, but can't find this anywhere. Did I dream it? If so, then anybody have a remedy to stop me dreaming of Phil or Rohan?
Hey @storm lantern
Unfortunately it was pulled at the last minute. So it was in the beta, but then removed.
aaah that would explain it. Thank you Phil, and sorry you weren't in my dreams 🙂
my tail logs are screaming at me about my templates not having default for so many of my templates that use as_timestamp, and was hoping I could remove a few with the next_alarm offset
I can fire it into feedback@... but for the question on the most recent podcast re: weather. I've switched from DarkSky to climacell, it seems to have the same sort of granularity as DarkSky with hourly and upcoming weather in 5 min increments etc.
Figured I'd drop it here for possible discussion also
Thanks mate! I must have not tested this one because of the API key requirement
Will most certainly have to try this one
Np!
It's a free API key and the limit is 100 requests per day. While I don't have any automations really dependent on very fast up to date forecasts it's been working fine for my simple stuff.
Yeah basically every 15 minutes is an update. 👍
So not sure if this would be of any interest but i created a walkthough of how to get sports calendar information into Home Assitant using ESPN and Google Calendar (via ROTK calendars) https://github.com/afwelch/haespncalendar
I think ClimaCell became Tomorrow.io and the free plan allows 500 calls / day now (https://www.tomorrow.io/weather-api/) if I understand correctly.
Someone else who has problems with the hue intergration and colour lights? that the state is not correct?
so the lights are blue and the colour state in hA are red
It continues to just work for me so that’s good 😌
The best kind of changes, non-breaking 😆
I guess this is something that could be ranted about in the next podcast, if it's a slow news day 🙂 The volume on google home speakers will have to be adjusted individually now, instead of as a group, if I'm reading this right https://www.theverge.com/2022/1/6/22871304/google-home-speaker-group-volume-control-changes-sonos-patent-decision
just listening to the podcast ... brett has way too much time available
I see the podcast on Youtube, but it doesn't show up in my podcast app on my iPhone (Overcast)?
I found it in Overcast with Home Assistant as my search. You could also just paste in the RSS feed https://hasspodcast.io/feed/podcast
Gah, got my hopes up - when I read the podcast is on YouTube, I thought we'd be able to see who's chatting. Oh well. 🤣
I think it was @blazing prawn that mentioned a while back in the podcast that he had switched all his hue lights to zigbee to be able to use the google assistant command 'lights' to toggle on and off the lights in the room. I can't for the life of me think of how to set HA up to know what room the command relates to? Does the Google incoming trigger have a property that identifies the room? Its driving me crazy trying to find an answer. Does anyone know? Was I imagining it?
Coming soon™, well at least to our new show when we get our ducks in a row
I have this, but for Alexa
just think - you'll be able to hold up some of the things of what you're talking about to a camera and... we'll be able to see them! 😄
Oh it's going to be much better than just that!
I don't think this can be done in Google Home. I don't have anything setup on that platform. But in Alexa, you assign a media player and lights to the same group, and saying lights will know which lights to turn on/off
I have to admit I'm probably spoilt by watching floss weekly, and them being able to screenshares, scroll down lists of specs and all that.
Brett's inspirational! I intentionally played the first n minutes of it a second time, so that my wife could listen to it. I'm to look into door locks and door sensors now 😄 (there's that mythbusters episode about it being much better to leave the toilet seat down, which my wife really takes to heart)
Was it better because that's not disgusting?
Thanks Phil. Fancy pants Alexa huh. 😀
Hey there,
I am not sure if you heard (probably do, bit still) this guy: https://www.youtube.com/c/12002230/videos
He made custom firmware for xiamo ble temp and hum sensor, there for it can be easly integrated to HA.
Right now he is working on eink pricetag display. I think these cheap eink displays could do a lot for ha.
Maybe it worth to call him as a guest intot the podcast. 🙂
Wow this dude was next level on the lastest podcast....
oooh this is pretty cool!
lol!
yeah def some fun ideas haha
they are, imagine, you can throw thes little screen every where in the house, display various infirmation.
Like to entrance, when is your next bus, or to the fridge... Cause e-paper consome very little energy it can stay alive long with one charge... I so exited if we can intagrate such displays into HA.
Sooo... I made this: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/home-assistant-mute-switc/agjmampeijncjkcnojmgfokephaddjkn is it maybe something you would like to mention on the podcast? I use it every day and I really enjoy it. Hopefully someone else will too.
Just got round to the latest podcast..
That guy has some great ideas 😄
I can't see any show notes or links though.
Listening to you guys talk about Bayesian sensors.. has anyone put any thought or work into bringing the set up into the UI?
I'd be interested in playing with it and writing some user stories or otherwise thinking through how it could be implemented, but I certainly don't want to redo work that's been done!
@flat ivy Could you guys focus some episode on homekit integration?
I think it is the best way to ease wifes/girlfriends to home assistant.
The ui is integrated, works with siri and its really fast. Also when you have appletv/homepod or always at home ipad, you can use those as proxy. Even cameras and alarms are supported
The only downside I found is, that it doesnt support all device types 🙂 Cheers!
Just catching up on the passive aggressive episode.. i considered how to automatically close the toilet bowl lid, but never considered locking people in until they do it :D
Please allow me to apologize for guessing only guys are here!
^ +1 for awareness. Appreciate that 🙂
But yeah i think we can do something around homekit. tbh though I dont use it myself haha and I dont believe @blazing prawn does either haha so it might be a fun rabbit hole that we go through first
Something I'd love to eventually enable for my wifes iPhone. I'm android so it will have zero benefit for me.
Although I have seen that some integrations can be enabled for local control with a Homekit integration/bridge. I have no idea how it all works, but something we can definitely explore.
I use HomeKit, my wife has the home assistant app also but she tends to just use the home control app. Originally set it up for integrating my Ecobee thermostat since their cloud integration was sub par.
But it also let me hook into the Apple TV I have so expanded it quite a bit.
If you find a free spot I could join and talk. If you don’t mind Czech accent.
Heh question of free time with young twins.
I’m somewhere deep on Phil and Rohan’s backlog for a podcast appearance.
Yep I think you're about 6 down. @flat ivy we really need to pump more episodes out
I won't stop you.
More than welcome to go weekly for a little bit 👍👍👍
What about having a guest host? Like Rohan + guest, then Phil+guest?
That's not a bad idea
Takes some of the load off you guys while giving the audience what they demand ;)
What was the name of the good pool robot that you talked about
The one that maps the pool?
Podcast idea - detailed setup of ESPresense with Bluetooth detection and other sensors on a nodemcu or d1 mini.
I really dig the idea of cleaning rooms based on which rooms are scanned, too bad my Roomba is too stupid to do room cleaning 😭
Just got around to listening to the latest ep.
Always get new inspiration (and a hurt budget)
Did Dan figure out if the Bond Bridge sees if the RF remote sent a signal? / Sees the updated state?
Don't think it does 😞
It’s hard to do that on a audio podcast tbh. I like the idea and definitely agree in its value. Maybe something someone like @shut skiff can cover on YouTube?
I think Lewis from Everything Smart Home did something with that. Let me check..
found it
This Smart Home also did a video. https://youtu.be/7bfW_6130To A little different than Lewis'. A bit more technical and detailed. I used this video to set up my ESPs two days ago. Both videos are linked on https://espresense.com/
How is it working for you? I ordered d1 mini's from that video, delayed shipping... I figured if this didn't work well could do esphome with them for something.
The 3 ESP network is working relatively well. It is not responsive enough to "track" movement through the house but an automation can"look" to see if you're in a room. There are times when my devices change to not_hone even though I'm sleeping or actually there. The dev is hopefully working towards the nodes being able to talk to each other for better results.
Good to know. It sounds like it is still in the early stages for sure. I like the idea of using the d1s as multi sensors like motion, lux, temp, humidity.
On the latest episode they were talking about Energy monitoring, specifically in Victoria, Australia. Phil mentioned he was using Amber for his new house, and the HA integration. But for anyone else here in Victoria you can get a PowerPal for free. Its a fairly dumb device that just goes on your meter and counts the flashes on the meter (1 flash per Wh of power is what my meter does). Its a bluetooth device but it sends data to the server via your phone or other device whenever its in range. There are also roumours of a WiFi device so that its always connected and updating even when your phone is out of range, but im sure whoever is in the beta isn't aloud to talk about it. But its probably the best you'll get if your not with Amber, the integration isnt in HA, or even in HACS (got to add the repo to HACS), but its been working very reliably for me.
Also Phil, you said you were on the look-out for some switches for lights. I've been using these for the last few months and really impressed. https://brilliantlighting.com.au/product/smart-wifi-dimmer-mech-e94960
I know they are WiFi and Tuya, so you've probably completely ruled them out. But they are the only thing I'm aware of that gives 100% control both via HA and physically. Which as far as im concerned is a requirement for main lights (not feature lights, they can be 100% HA with no physical control). I use them via the Regular Tuya integration, not the local one, since its much easier to set up, and because I have full physical control on the very rare occasions I have Power and not internet I can just control physically, which is good enough for me for now.
I got 3 of them to put in different rooms to make sure they worked well. They do have a version that works for multi-way switches as well, but I haven't tried them yet.
I've got an extension that's getting built at the moment, where im planning to do all smart switches for, that I'll need to buy in 4-6 weeks. So if you know a better option here in Australia I'd love to hear about it.
Very interesting. To confirm, the Amber integration doesn't give you your current usage, it shows you the current price you're paying, and can alert you if there's a price spike.
To get readings from my meter, I'm using a Rainforest Eagle, which connects via a Zigbee connection. I am constantly getting scam calls trying to install those "free energy monitoring device" to my house. If I'm not paying for it, then I am the product. Seems a bit creepy allowing a company to access my energy usage (says the guy with Amazon microphones all over his house)
Yeah Wifi is a no starter for me unfortunately. That switch does look slick though.
My current thinking is to use Zwave dimmer/switch modules, powered by Clipsal Saturn switches. Gives me local control, extends my zwave network, and if the zwave module burns out, I can replace it with a zigbee/matter/zwave module in the future.
Ideally I'd love to use the Inovelli ones, but I don't think they have an AU version
Yeah, I'm sure they use/sell the data to make money, but its the Vic Government paying for the actual device to help encourage saving energy. And my energy company already has the exact same data they are probably already selling, plus the grid provider, so going from 2 to 3 companies that have it I doubt would make much difference
Yeah that's a fair point
How do those switches work with the Zwave and the physical switch? Sounds like there's 2 completely separate devices controlling the light? Surely they wouldn't work together that well?
Also I've got decent WiFi, with UniFi gear, and I haven't had any issues at all with WiFi home automation stuff. The access points can do hundreds of clients each without any issue, and there's only dozens in the house. Is it a case that WiFi used to be terrible and its gotten better? I've only just started doing more than google homes in the last year so no clue what everything used to be like
Just listening to Gene’s episode of the podcast and wanted to say that the Aqara Temperature sensors that I have only have adhesive on the battery cover. So to change batteries I just have to twist the whole unit and the batter cover stays attached to the wall - I have the square version, so it may be different for other/older models 👍
I found after long term use, the base and case were pretty much fused together. Changing battery (I never used their adhesive but bluetack) almost destroys the battery cover
To be fair, I’ve only had mine for ~18 months and have only changed a handful of them…but I’ve had zero issues when removing them from the wall 👍
I have in total 9 Aqara sensors around the house and all of them can be (easily) twisted to replace the battery. The cover stays on the wall. Never had a problem. Had them for over 2 years now and replaced all battery's at least once.
@flat ivy Regarding your solicitation for lock suggestions in the latest ep, I switched from a Kevo to a Kwikset 916 a year and a half ago. It’s probably the most stable thing in my smart home setup. Still on the original batteries I put in there. And you can create custom codes to family/friends. Pretty great.
I have been using the 916 for both by doors for about 2 years now. I have changed batteries once so far. Wonderful locks, I got them free from a distributor but for sure would buy them if I need more. Easy to swap batteries, key entry (easy key rekeying), making pins for everyone. It reports what user's code was used to enter too - Looking to integrate that into HA next.
Oh wow that’s 2 stellar reviews for it!! I’ll have to look into it
I’ve always been worried about the size but I feel like that may be the same size as the Kēvo which should work
I found it wasn't much larger than my deadbolt in width, only in height does it change. But I'm just on standard house doors. So the spacing allowed for it.
The 916 is a couple inches shorter and maybe 1/2 inch less wide than my Kevo 1st gen which it replaced
Hey @flat ivy. Congrats on the Podcast (and Phil!), it is a great source for ideas for automations and/or practices.
On the last couple episodes you mentioned your desire in doing more around energy consumption monitoring. I thought about reaching out about a custom component I built to retrieve going rates and respective peak windows for any energy company in Ontario, Canada (https://github.com/jrfernandes/ontario_energy_board). It works like a charm when assigning the entity generated by component together with your power consumption entities, like so: https://bit.ly/3uTeK9K
This is awesome! @flat ivy gonna have some work cut out for him this year
Oh sweet!!! I’ll have to check this out. Thanks for building it and bringing it up 😀
@blazing prawn did @flat ivy get his sprinkler system in before we give him more projects
I'm guessing not! Like all of us his list of projects grows faster than he can get to them
Lol correct.
Actually what ended up happening is that I was trying to plan it before the landscape people were going to come out to redo the backyard (I was supposed to have like a month); but the guy called me the next day saying they had a cancellation and can they start that day. I actually ordered conduit, sprinkler heads, piping, etc but the home supply store took about a week to fulfil it; at which point they were already finished ugh
Just finished the podcast from last week and heard my mention. Most my home assistant is in an unfinished state. Dashboards are the worst. Day job gets in the way too.
I just listening a the episode with Erwin.
You can setup your iphone to trust in a network, that way it will show the same mac adress.
It is just one toggle
Good to know! Will have to check this out. Now to try encourage my wife to keep her Wifi turned on
Works on the apple watch too
I should however keep only one mac address per network, as long as you join it at least once a month.
Way behind and just catching up, but did anyone come up with great use cases for the ring doorbell 'ring' addition?
Dog training. Teaching the dog not to bark at the bell.
Love the inspiration and aha! I get from the podcast.
Was using the (lacking) cloud Airthings integration.
I have ESP32s doing things so just tacked on the ESPHome Airthings thanks to Keir's use, reminded me I could do that!
Less cloud 😄
Love to @marcelveldt#0393 of Music Assistant on the show. I'm loving it
I hope everyone enjoys this week's episode. If anyone has questions, I'll do my best to answer them!
👀 🎧
Don't mind me, I'll just be over here tidying my config and freaking out 😛
I do one of these “HomeKit hacks”. I just implemented it the other week. Have an input Boolean flip to show a camera on my Apple TV. If my 2.5yo open their bedroom door show the camera on the ATV like a “doorbell”
Haven’t listened yet just assuming based on the show notes.
Hehe, pretty similar! That's a good one
That's really smart, I love it
And finally inspired me to replace an old android TV automation with an updated one for my apple tv:
https://github.com/mikeodr/Home-AssistantConfig/commit/db13dfe15e253cfbef013352f5af25fbb64592f9
🎉
Excellent!!
