I'm gonna be honest when i say that when i played Black Mesa I avoided soldier fights where I could, mostly because a Gordon needlessly slaughtering American troops isn't the Gordon I'd like to be or play as. Of course, I had to fight them often, Half Life 1's a story about one man's fight for survival. But if there was this big open fight with soldiers and aliens and shit going down I would just kinda weasel on past and let them talk it out later. I'm sure the HECU have enough on their plate without an orange power armor wearing scientist beating their skulls in with a crowbar.

If one side is losing horribly, I'd pick off some from the opposition from afar, but never get in between unless I'm cornered. Other than that, the big fights are where they kill each other till one side just scrapes a win, and i swoop in at the last second and finish them off with my magnum or something.

portal, and portal 2, had a lot of playtesting and it shows
everything is intuitively laid out. i can always tell, at a glance, where i need to go, or what i have to do. the puzzle part comes when i try to figure out how to do it.
"ok, i need a cube for that door. where's the cube? how do i get to that door?" etc, etc
and you always feel like you're making progress, slowly working towards that goal
with mods like portal stories mel and rexaura, it's rarely intuitively laid out like that, and there's a lot of fucking about just seeing what you can do.
