That was a joke I know it's a youtube glitch bit I found it funny
it's not a big deal at all in my case, I'm just trying to schedule a DMV appointment that uses it
ISO of someone to assist me in programming on several projects I have been trying to complete. I feel I am over my head right now. Current projects are
- an iRacing administrator controller using Neotellis and MakeCode
- a Volume controller using a QT Py board and 2C QT Rotary Encoders using Arduino and connecting to a client called DEEJ
- Much more rattling around in my head

Man my local pharmacy is feeling the labor crunch. No one's answering the phones and my prescriptions haven't been delivered today, 3 days (next business day) after I ordered them. I can't pick it up because I'm waiting on covid test results. It's a bummer, they are nice folks. Wouldn't want to work there right now.
I have an NVMe SSD enclosure with a USB-C port. Am I correct that pretty much no SSD inside there is going to need extra cooling apparatus because the loads that create that kind of heat only happen at data transfer speeds higher than USB can support?
Speaking about shipping things from US to NZ and struck a tangential point with shipping costs and the shipping industry being affected by COVID... So, now I intended to present you with some scenarios...
I've done it [have someone mail me a bunch of smaller orders domestically, and then I ship one big box] before for friends in Sweden. Admittedly, that was before every shipping company on the planet decided that [insert job of person that never sees other people] can't come to work because of COVID. It's like, truckers. When do they ever really have to come closer than 6 feet to anyone?
@fading hare I've been to Sweden. In the summer. I don't think I could handle the winters. I don't think I could handle being any further from the equator than I currently am, if I'm being honest.
Sweden was quite nice in the summer. Maybe when I'm one of the idle rich I'll summer there.
The winters are pretty mild in Sweden.
I am the exact opposite. I overheat if it's above 72.
But, yeah, winters in Sweden (obviously vary depending on your distance to the north pole) but they tend to be pretty mellow, in comparison to a lot of the northern states in the US.
I'm a dry heat person. I don't want to live near family so I'll wait until they all die, but eventually I'll live in the American Southwest and collect geckos or whatever they do
You'll see temps might hit -10'C if it's really cold, and that's like... 22'F?
Not even minus F.
Ahhhhh nooooo, just thinking about -10C is making me sad
I don't like warming up by putting on clothes, I prefer to be hot than to be cold, to a great degree
This is my hometown:
https://www.wunderground.com/weather/se/ljungby
It seems so weird that they thought it was appropriate to name their site after a terrorist group. TBF a mild terrorist group, but still terrorists.
funny part is, this is the weather in Charlotte, NC right now
it's going to be colder here than it was in my hometown in Sweden
sure, it does fluctuate with the distance to the air/water streams that bring warmer water up towards Scandinavia. When I was a kid we had glorious winters. These days? They're lucky if they see snow for a few days.
but without all the humidity
that's what makes the PNW such a miserable place (in my opinion)
In the summer. The air is dry in Oregon in the winter. It's just snowy as all get out
Oregon is amazing.
I was in Bend for a week, visiting a friend. Drove my new truck out there from UT when we were visiting my wife's family.
We actually ended up getting the truck in SLC because I had driven my Hyundai Tucson out there (it was mid-pandemic) instead of flying, so I was driving back home in one configuration or another. I was talking trucks with someone in her family. I said I had looked at Tacomas but they were just super overpriced for what you get. He looks at me like I sprouted two heads and barks out "you know I work for Ford, right? Have you even seen the new Rangers?!" So, I ended up getting my dream truck that wasn't a Tacoma, I just didn't know that the new Rangers were so handsome.
I want an f150 lightning but I don't have near 6 figures to blow on a vehicle
I wanted a Ranger Raptor, but yeah, same same.
Since they're so scarce the dealerships basically sell to the highest bidder.
Yeah trucks are nuts. I basically want an electric vehicle or a plug in hybrid at the very least. It would be nice to also not need to rent a truck when I want to haul wood somewhere
Please elaborate
in about... 25 years, all those batteries that are in that Tesla... they're going to have to go somewhere... they don't just... disappear, like bananas on a hike.
How do they justify it
processing those batteries will cost way more in carbon emissions than me driving a gas powered truck
I haven't seen them justify it. They don't really talk about what happens to your vehicle in the end.
What does processing mean? And, if it costs money, then what will make people do it instead of throwing the batteries in a landfill?
Processing means you can't just chuck the entire battery pack because it consists of nested arrays of 18650 batteries that are wired up in some fancy way to extend the amount of cycles/depletion/whatever. So you have to take the pack off of the vehicle. Take it apart. Take out all the little batteries. Git rid of any wrappings or whatever else, and then do something with that raw material. Which is... super bad for the planet.
Gas prices and I suspect we'll solve the battery problem before too long. There's going to be a lot of governmental pressure to do so
Where I live, most power is renewable. I can't get solar because of tree cover but we have other sources. So I wouldn't be refueling with dirty power.
Yeah, so that's going to fix it for 1% of the population.
What about the rest of the plebs? They just gonna walk?
What do you mean by "can't"
well, ALL batteries technically go in the OCEAN
I am not trying to play dumb
Ideals are lofty and adorable, but, real world application on a nationwide level for at least a hundred million drivers, that's something entirely different. The price of a Tesla is currently what... $60k or something?
Or, is the environment only important for the rich silicon valley yuppies that can afford a Tesla?
I am saying, why do you think the batteries are going to be processed at all rather than just thrown in landfills
This is independent of how bad Tesla is
(And let's get straight, I can definitely afford a Tesla, in case you were to steer towards envy)
@wooden schooner well, that strengthens my point then
landfills are even worse
No it doesn't
you ever heard of coal ash?
BEV prices are coming down across the board. It won't be too long before middle class folks can justify one.
It's a question, for my own understanding
or you're leading me on, because I am not very intelligent, either way, I am down
I suspect there will be a period of time where we dispose of them improperly, but a series of whistleblowers will force us to do better
so, look up coal ash
I'm aware
And tell me that you can guarantee that the landfill will contain those heavy metals and whatever for eternity and that's cool. I'm on board. We were talking about the environment, right? You know, the same one that will be here for our children and their children...
They'd have to use something like concrete or similar, to line that fill with, well, they're more likely just underground storage facilities
It is bad. Sounds like you're not interested in answering my question though
I am definitely interested in talking about this topic. I can't give you answers, though. You should see your priest for those.
my friend is an environmental engineer. Landfills can be remediated.
works for tesla actually
or will soon
yeah, after half of Flint, MI dies... but, hey, just some poor Black folks, so no loss
The lead crisis in flint is unrelated to disposal of batteries or any other waste and is mostly a story of corruption in local government
state and local
So you can guarantee that Tesla and all its vendors and subsidiaries will somehow be more ethical about the disposal of their batteries? If not, then like I said, the environmental motivation for getting an EV over a gas truck is to me, just something I am passing the buck on for 25 years.
the truth is, we spent a century making our cities impossible to live in if you don't drive. Redlining/suburbia made this worse. It's the mess we're in. It's also true that continuing to use ICE cars is going to contribute to the death of our biosphere. We have to transition off of ICE.
I would suggest that it's the government's job to make tesla et. al act sustainably.
The government will do no such thing, all the regulating bodies are bought and paid for... maybe if we made lobbying illegal, and made sure that people can't "leave" the private sector to go be the chairman of the FCC or something. Massive conflict of interest there, especially since there's nothing that prevents "lobbyists" from "influencing" said chairman.
whether that will happen is anyone's guess, but we cannot afford to not try. You can't affect the environment without affecting the environment. Solar panels and wind turbines have a carbon footprint as well, but we can't just stick with coal and oil because there are issues with renewables.
You are correct. We are moving in the right direction.
All our children will curse us if we skip out on the BEV revolution because we weren't solid on where we would put the waste yet. I'd argue they deserve to curse us now for slowing down on nuclear power.
I'm just being real about the whole problem. If people want to think that they are saving the environment by buying a Tesla, cool. The reality is vastly more complicated, and they may actually end up with an even larger load of CO2 Karma.
well now I'm in a bad mood because I accidentally ordered a 3' USBC cable when I need 6'
I agree, see, that's why I like talking about these things. Someone usually has a brighter version of whatever my broken brain has decided to be cynical about.
Gonna have to go through the whole rigamarole of returning it AND wait for the right one to come
order from Amazon next time
I guess I can go to Worst Buy when my (hopefully) negative covid test comes in
Oh I did order from amazon
But returning involves a whole thing
half of the time they'll refund you right away and credit your account, or send a whole new cable out and you get to keep the other one
They actually did a good job last time. I goofed and sent two too small belts back in one package instead of 2. They figured it out on their end though and credited me for both
returning is pretty easy these days... the dropoff locations are easy to get to, you don't need to box anything, it's just like... [toss crap you didn't want at some poorly paid clerk and walk off]
I have to go to a store like someone from the freakin 90s
Jeff Bezos' very public midlife crisis while his ex gives all their money away has been blissful though
I couldn't care less about Jeff Bezos. He's a mythical creature, something I will never attain or tangent, so if he got disappeared today, a puppet account could keep him alive for the next 500 years and I would never have noticed.
But, it has been kind of fun. And, not just Bezos! Melinda Gates.
Oh yeah she's flourishing too I think
She's laying down a hurtin' on old Bill.
Good to see these women who put up with these godawful men get away
he cheated on her, and she just did the right thing and went straight for his wallet
now she did try to argue that we "need billionaires" so she gets limited praise from me
It's more the being in opposition to Bill that I approve of
probably not a lot of yelling, she probably just quietly contacted her lawyers and drew up papers and preserved condemning evidence for the court appearance, and yeah, half of MANY DOLLARS were hers. She didn't even have to short Gamestop stock.
well, if you actually look at how much money, well spent, she has funneled into charities, where it matters, she's got a pretty strong track record of not messing about... she doesn't just throw her money away to cook the tax books, she actually does good things... so, in a way, maybe we do need billionaires
the other option, "everyone being equal" has failed in several different matrix simulations, like we all know (hint, Russia) so I dunno... it's a flawed, but somewhat working system... except for the massive wage gaps... it's like. people make $15/hour working at McDonalds, and someone like Musk launches a freakin car into space for the LULZ.
and there's a long string of gunshots, pardon me, that was super close
can't see anything... must have been a street over...
not even sure we'll last 25 years if people keep shooting each other basically every other day...
just hoping none of those bullets hit a bystander, or some kid in their bed... because drive-bys are the worst
And it's gotten progressively worse since COVID. These people can't afford EVs. They got laid off from whatever normal job they had in the restaurant industry or any of the in-person service jobs that were completely eradicated in 2020. Sure, we can drive our Teslas to the garage and take the Boosted Board to the office and snicker in their direction and tell them to learn how to code...
There's the Citizen report. Five gunshots heard? Uh, no. That was 15-20, and then another five.
Yeah. 900 feet away from where I live.
20? Ouch. Multiple weapons or a big magazine...
I mean, a Glock has like... 15-17
Interesting, didn't realize that.
OK, others also confirmed they heard the same cadence/amount of shots. I called 911 just to let them know it wasn't 5 shots. I drive past that house almost every day.
but, I think it was two different weapons, they sounded differently, the first one was very steady, definitely not auto, and then the last 5 sounded different, so perhaps someone else fired, or someone returned fire...
😦
yeah, no going to bed for me for a little bit
900 feet is what, 300 meters?
We need more cats. I am going to post cats now. Cats that are cute. Cuddly cats. Animated cats. Funny cats. Ugly cats. Sad cats. Grumpy cats. Naked cats. Hairy cats.
these are the derps we live with
we had a cat that would drink like that... he'd stick his head under the faucet, then drink the splatter by flicking his tongue out
guys, does anyone know any international scholarships that provides both tuition fees and living expenses?
A EU based alternative to Tindie launched today, will be interesting to see how it does https://www.lectronz.com/blog_entries/1
any one know the N76E003AT20?
It's an 1T 8051 microcontroller
if sb ports seesaw to that thing, we'll never need to worry about not being able to get seesaw chips

And roundabout chips?
Sorry. 😁
they're one isle over, next to the swing set chips
adafruit should give 8051 some love
They're still readily available in this silicon crisis
and even big US company like TI use them in their CC wireless controllers
Just like the blasted supermarket.... Always moving stuff around. 😠
Also, nuvoton is not really a small company, you can see their IO chips on all sorts of high end computer motherboards like ASUS
that's a good idea, what's the footprint of that chip compared to what they have now?
Order today, ships today. N76E003AQ20 – 8051 series Microcontroller IC 8-Bit 16MHz 18KB (18K x 8) FLASH 20-QFN (3x3) from Nuvoton Technology Corporation of America. Pricing and Availability on millions of electronic components from Digi-Key Electronics.
QFN20 available for order on Digikey
24K of flash, and 1K of RAM
You can use KEIL C51 or the open source SDCC compiler
i have an old temperature sensor i bought a few years ago, its tiny and surface mount, no clue what the pinouts are or even what it is... is there a way to figure out the pinouts with a multimeter?
looks like it has Y700 K2RW on the back but google search came up with nothing
Oh, almost forgot, nuvoton also got a M0 line which are also accessible and inexpensive in this silicon crisis
like their M031TD2AE with 48Mhz M0 core, 64K flash 8K ram
0.99 usd each
Man everywhere is short staffed. I'm gonna have to physically go in to my doctor's office to get my covid results because no one is answering the phone.
Double mask gang represent
Stay safe.
I'm less concerned about getting it since cases are mild for triple vaccinated people. More on the very unlikely chance that I have it and spread it.
Go full steampunk plague doctor style
Chinese doctor style
that's even scarier
the weird bird/snout plague doctor masks weird me out
They're like creepy phantom of the opera penguins or something.
I have a leather top hat and some goggles with red lenses, the thought has crossed my mind to add some... flair to it
but yeah, I mean, if you have a bunch of CBRN suits laying around, go full Chinese doctor...
Also, just ordered a full tube of nuvoton's 8051 (74 pcs)
for one of my projects
costs me 30-ish bucks
nice!
My sister is a resident but had managed to mostly avoid covid duties the whole pandemic
I'm very happy for her. Mostly just serving vets at the VA
for me, I just combat covid with vaccines and masks
And masking
just got my third pfizer
And canceling plans
yup!
I'm gonna miss a bunch of movies over the next few months
Isn't it just nice to know how to program a 8051 in 2022?
you'll never run out of microcontrollers
To be honest, COVID has broken my brain pretty hard. I dunno, I was fine for a while, but now, two years in, I live life on the internet. And, I am pretty sure I upset several people on this Discord. And, if they ever read this: I apologize for being an oaf and a crazy person. Or, if you know them, feel free to pass this message on.
Just FYI that word that ends in "az" is a pretty bad insult in some parts of the world.
oh snap
fixed
In the US it's fine but in the UK it's a very very rude way to refer to someone with developmental disabilities.
I only know because on a arduino forum I saw someone get not so gently corrected about it.
thanks for the heads up
@late fulcrum i think your right, looks like "VEML7700"
I have one I never did figure out
that right there is a marvel... looks like a robot dragon fly got caught in a piece of amber... and @late fulcrum is about to revive the mechasaurus.
optical sensors are pretty cool, i wish other stuff came in that clear, like MCUs
There's a story about a prototype chip, fresh from the fab, and they had just finished wiring it up to the test harness... and then someone comes in with a camera and a flash and the puls of light on the exposed chip was enough to fry it for good.
I can't find it, but I did find this: https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2015/feb/09/raspberry-pi-2-camera-flash-power-off
Let's just say that the transparent package comes with clear disadvantages.
that looks like a map of a pyramid, made entirely with gold
i always thought gold was more conductive but looks like it goes 1st silver 2nd coper 3rd gold, i guess gold is just best at resisting corrosion?
im surprised aluminum is better then iron
theres gold coins thats been in sea for long time that still is shiny gold
OK. So, this is weird. Anyone ever have any issues with Snap applications, specifically Discord and Spotify, causing xHCI and USB to bomb out? It completely kills my USB switch which has keyboard/mouse/sound... so I am wondering, could it be my external sound card/DAC?
copper verdigris is so beautiful
(that's digital art, but you get the idea)
having some Mandelbrot fun there
lol nice
yup
Aluminum is more reactive than iron, but its oxide is hard, so it quickly forms a layer of protective oxide and then the process of oxidation is blocked. Iron, on the other hand, has a softer, more permeable oxide, so a layer of oxide is non protective, and the oxidation process continues.
Laying down some wisdom. I feel like if I just watch the things you write, I will be a cyberpunk blacksmith electronics wizard in no time.
what does "Snap applications" mean?
(websearch yields several possibilities; fortunately Discord isn't owned by Snap Inc)
Snap is the Ubuntu container-ish app thingie.
I suck therefore I still run Windows on my desktop. To be fair, I purchased it well before they invented the idea of a year that would be The Year Of Linux On The Desktop with web design earnings so it's therefore OK.
i.m.o , snap is bad and is a sign that it will be time to leave Ubuntu soon/now
Not interested in being a passenger to Canonical's attempts to mimic big tech's current monetization strategies
😉
That was kinda funny tho

I know.... so sad I won't be watching No Way Home in theaters
I wanna be a cyberpunk blacksmith wizard too.....
I sorta like it, but I think it's meant for peeps coming from Windoze to feel comfortable
Omega's accent is kinda weird tho
Sorry for the spam of messages, just getting caught up
It's not the software itself I have a problem with, it's the company direction of Canonical
They're working so hard at process isolation and whatever that they've failed to protect the host from snap containers crashing and breaking the host.
Whatever, though. Just another attack vector introduced by people that pretend to care about security and privacy.
Basically, if you get into a long conversation with anyone who has worked at Canonical within the past decade, well... oh my.
I am using ubuntu as my daily OS
and the first thing after I installed every single ubuntu copy for myself
is
you guessed it
remove snap
Got it
hehe
snap is just Canonical trying to be apple

building a closed software repository that only they have full control
If Canonical decided to convert more system components to snap
I will be more than happy to switch to arch
The major reason why I am using ubuntu
is because RP2040 SDK
and while using ubuntu
I have this running all the time
Glad Mint doesn't ship with snap support.
Afaik, this is essentially why Mint exists
Kinda... But long before this ||****|| with snap.
im glad mint doesn't have snap
mint is the always-updated debian, basically, and a sprinkle of cinnamon
Yep. They formed because Ubuntu was going off the rails. The pattern continued, and Ubuntu is now on the verge of glitching through the ground plane.
Nubuntu
Canonical should acquire Snapple just to get rights to the name
Vertically integrate their microkitchens, or whatnot
@round dagger I had a question about the keyboard you shared in #show-and-tell. What language did you program it with?
Very nice! Pretty easy to do?
Well nice! It looks excellent.
How many pins did you end up using for all the switches?
10x5 so 15 pins on the pico
it has gat milk reds from 1upkeyboards 13$ shipped for 48 of them
Nice. I bet it feels great
I'd sure like to try a split some day. I'm working on a nibble right now with a Kb2040
Do you have a github?
This would be en excellent project to put on there if you haven't yet
The RP2040 needs more keyboards examples I think 😄
just did thank you
https://github.com/roykos4114/DIY-KEEBS ill add more later today.
Does CP2102N have any GPIOs?
doesn't look like it, but there's always the Seesaw boards, or FT232H or MCP2221A
oh, I take that back, it does look like there are a couple just like the CP2104, but the product page says "CP2104 has RS-485 support and GPIO support, CP2102N does not"
Someone, over night, bought >1k of a MOSFET I just wanted 3 of. Now I have to reconfigure my design. Bummer
I am going upstairs to my MOSFET hoard and telling them all that they are good little MOSFET bois and girlses and I'm glad to have them all in my life.
My sympathies.
Like, I think the problem with Cannonical is that they always have like halfway decent ideas. Make Debian but newer, yay! Make a deployment system for cranking out installs that improves upon Puppet and Chef, yay! Make an easier way to install packages, yay!
But, like, they keep finding ways to take reasonable ideas and just completely fail to implement them well at all.
I don't even know anything technical about Snap. I just know that Canonical is jumping on the "popularize an app store for which you're the middleman" monetization strategy, which sufficient to know it's bad.
@burnt tendon curious to hear your take/synopsis of why any/all of the above mentioned products came out mediocre, if you're up for it
Making a GUI to make configuration files for my Raspberry Pi Pico based macropad (Literally just Pimoroni RGB Keypad base) so it doesn't take me 5 minutes to add a new macro lol
Using PyQt5 and Qt Designer instead of Tkinter and it's been going really great so far 😄
Leadership problems. Most folks in the upper management of companies fancy themselves as Steve Jobs-esque figures who can come out with a series of magical innovative products every few years. Most of them aren't, and Steve Jobs was probably mostly just lucky and didn't need to be the jerk he behaved like anyway.
Yup. Fun fact, the original iPhone demo was a carefully choreographed sham. Most of it wasn't working at the time they showed it off
@burnt tendon I'm glad you interpreted the question that way, that answer is more interesting than what I was looking for. I had meant what about any/each of the products is worse than it should be.
I was looking for this to link to
https://www.theonion.com/apple-unveils-new-product-unveiling-product-1819569004
lol
And in the process I found this gem
Yeah, and, like some of the stuff they were promising with Juju and Charms and Snap is now trivially doable with Docker and Kubernetes.
They also had a great video once about apple's new ibook that did away with the keyboard and just had a trackpad.
Hits close to home
Like, they did a demo with Juju and OpenStack and self-healing deployments and a few years later a few of us in the community, myself included, did the same demo with Kubernetes and OpenStack.
It's just that their demo a few years prior was some magical duct-tape-and-bailing-wire done at the last second and it wasn't functional whereas ours was "Here's a working version, albeit beta"
Okay, so it didn't catch on either because OpenStack and stuff but at least our work helped show off Kubernetes when it was still a very new and experimental thing and that it could actually make stuff work in a self-healing cloudy fashion.
This was Kubernetes 1.2-1.3 and when Helm 2.0 was beta.
Kube is now 1.22 or thereabouts and Helm 3 has been out for a while.
I know very little about cloud, and openstack is the only cloud platform I've used 😆 is it dead?
Dono, not really involved anymore. The cool kids who were using OpenStack all moved to Kubernetes and so it still works and does stuff and everything but I dono if it's ever going to be the success the creators intended.
There's literally no competition in the space for it because pretty much everybody realized that orchestrating racks of hypervisors for the purposes of providing a vague analog to AWS was not actually that interesting or lucrative of a problem.
And if you wanted to manage hypervisors and didn't trust AWS, VMWare or Azure was probably less trouble.
OpenStack was kinda hamstrung because some very well-meaning, nice, super-brilliant people made a really poor call in the first year or two in the middle of the night, hyped up on Mondafinil, while listening to Infected Mushroom.
What was that call?
They decided that being written in Python was an essential part of the stack. They also decided that process or thread pooling wasn't performant enough so they needed to use async. They got mad at Twisted Python, which was the leading async framework, and decided that it was too hard for people to understand and therefore they instead went for this weird green-thread implementation that was perpetually flakey. So the code looked simpler but you had to know all of these weird unwritten rules about calling what and where.
I'm not explaining it well, probably.
And then they also went hard on using an SQL database and a message queue to do the sorts of things that kubernetes does using etcd with a lot less drama.
They very much ignored the concerns of the cluster admin and mostly ignored the concerns of the end user and so, while the setup process for kube 1.2 was preetty whack on an absolute scale, it was actually quite reasonable compared to OpenStack's.
Obv solving different problems, but less than you'd think.
where's that Haskell emoji when you need it
I hate, hate, hate misleading headlines. E.g. "It's Always Sunny star Glenn howerton charged with 4 felonies" and then you click in and it's that he revealed he was almost booked for buying a fake ID almost 30 years ago.
We need an addendum to the first amendment that you can't be annoying with it
click bait titles are the bane of the world they lead to people assuming alot
this would have been a EZ fix.. then POOF soldering iron went ded
rest in peace my friend
Rust in pieces. 😔
all i say is, "you can rest now"
I guess you'll need a soldering iron to repair your soldering iron. This soldering iron kit would not help, as you'd need a soldering iron to put it together! https://www.sparkfun.com/products/retired/10624
IMHO that's what the Go language is for.
that's hilarious
Their timing was poor enough that they did this before Go came out, but then it came out soon enough that porting everything to Go was a tantalizing option never taken.
I exist
I do not.
who ever wrote book of bobafet
👌
loving it
if you could see my face you would know, that there is one happy starwars fan
Since this is offtopic
Can I post pixiv art here?
Painted this one completely on ubuntu 20.04 with fully open source software
Linux is really my daily drive OS thanks to RP2040 SDK

Which is almost Linux only
nuvoton's github repository
All of their dev boards and SDK are completely open source
They even wrote neat headers for developers to use their MCUs like an Arduino
I don't see a lot of Asian chip designers doing this
What do you use?
Krita
oh nice. I am amazed that project still exists
it's roughly equivalent to Photoshop, right?
not quite
it's more like a lite version of Clip Studio Paint
Or a Pro (but free) version or Paint tool SAI
oh wow it is for digital art. nice
I was going to ask how you were painting in photoshop
how's the learning curve? I've been messing around in MyPaint with my cheapo graphics tablet and have no clue what I'm doing
what's the lowest priced decent tablet with a display?
or get a laptop with wacom EMR stylus
if needed, can remove the "decent" requirement
they're not cheap
but worth the price
yeah. My current tablet was $45

bought on the utmost whim, and has paid for itself several times over in enjoyment due to basically good timing
mine is $798
I am mainly using it for blender and zbrush(3D modeling) though
I am not a pro at digital painting either
I guarantee you that your art is at least 798/45 = 17.73 times better than mine

thank you
although I can also draw on my cheapo xp-pen tablet that I brought for osu
like the above piece you linked to is dope. here's an example of my drawing

half of it is me trying the different brushes in mypaint
hey that's not bad
oh yeah for brushes
the one I posted was kinda a challenge
I limited myself to use only 1 brush
for everything?
yeah
the glint in the eyes? the hair?
yeah
that's dedication

Just thought it might be fun
to try that
my brain is still built to draw PCBs
instead of anime girls
I'm definitely gonna check out krita, thanks for the pointer

it appears to have the kitchen sink as one of its dependencies (205mb of KDE packages) but hey, we livin' in the age of 1TB hard drives
You should talk to the poor kids trying to play new CoD games at launch.
Or me when I don't power on my PS4 for 6 months and it needs many gigs of updates to play any game

I just switched from a si7021 to a sht30, what does the heater do exactly on sht3X?
The SHT3x is equipped with an internal heater, which
is meant for plausibility checking only. The temperature
increase achieved by the heater depends on various
parameters and lies in the range of a few degrees
centigrade. It can be switched on and off by command,
see table below. The status is listed in the status register.
After a reset the heater is disabled (default condition).```
the datasheet says
Yeah, for sure.
@idle ironI believe it's basically a tool to allow you to see that all the sensors are working. You apply a small amount of dT and see that the values read out from the sensors changes in a reasonable way. But, I'm not specifically knowledgeable on that device, I'm extrapolating from others I've seen.
ikr, i felt like a was a kid watching starwars for the 1st time
Personally, I drink my boba.
Things i need to save up for:
- soldering station
- reflow station
- power supply
- tools
- 3d printer
- microscope
If i achieve these goals i can look into setting up a workshop for repairs and start up a maker space in south africa
maybe look into a kickstarter or something for funds?
Anyone looking for spicy RAM?
whole room is a WIP (particularly the walls and floors) but wondering if anyone has any suggestions for organization, I think I will build a wire/solder dispenser to put inbetween the parts drawer boxes.
Thanks 🙂
@brisk spirenice setup.
Thank you
Put it together over the summer
Thinking about swapping the computer/worktable configuration, the window means I can't put up shelves for equipment or parts and im not utilizing the wall above the computer area.
Oh, 100%
I felt like the first one kinda stunk
What's the bad apple in my dataset?
Now it's just cussing at me
hehe
like this?
it didn't occur to me to use Tabasco on RAM...
240V RAM!! Spicy ho ho!!!
@dusty citrus you a varus main?
Yeah 😄
Good fun
New ghostbusters, was so good.. so good i cried and suddenly i really missed my dad.
That was really well done.
i give the prop engineers a 10
It was weird seeing Tektronix scopes with lights they don't normally have, otherwise I loved the props.
Added CircuitPython support for a new board, how do I submit a PR?
It's been a while, y'all! I'm back mostly cause I'm getting to poke around with some new electronics (read: old but new to me) and I wanna share it with like-minded peeps
james web space telescope fully deployed
I want to make a fume extractor with a spare 120mm fan I have from my pc. How could I make it as cheap as possible
Stuff a paper-towel tube with Kleenex and duct-tape it to the fan? That'd be pretty cheap, at least, though no idea if it would do a good job... 😅
You should add in a lathe, mill, scraper and drill press to that list. If one was inclined, you can do it gingery style!
truth is this is never happening
i'm 38, disabled and going nowhere, i fix a device once every 3 weeks due to lack of customers
i dont want a handout
or anyone's sympothy
never say never.

Manjaro KDE. It's what all the cool kids use.
KDE-Neon is what the Real cool kids use
time to get a Weller!
How does that compare to an iPad Pro with the Apple Pencil?
||spoilers ;-)||
||I thought it was pretty trippy with all the sand people and their sea lion honks and boops. In the end, I thought it was just too much, and I felt sort of embarrassed for whatever cultures they ripped off when cobbling together sand people lore. It was like an entire clan of Jar Jar Binxes had descended onto the desert floor, only moments away from turning the whole thing into the Star Wars Holiday Special.||
There.
lol, thanks 😉
I get on people for spoilers on 50-year old movies too, so don't go by me
how was that even a spoiler, though? 😄
Anything can a spoiler, that's why I don't even read reviews. It's a spoiler even to hint that there's a twist, because then you expect a twist.
My strategy: blank slate, then immersion.
I tend to do the same.
But yeah, I tend to be on the spoiler pedant end of the spectrum. Wikipedia plot synopses are the other end.
Just any trailer. Just gives away all the interesting parts about the movie in less than 2 minutes. I don't know if the collective intelligence in the world has diminished that far, or if it's just the people that make trailers that are dumber than boxes of rocks...
I'll stick with Mint Cinnamon. 😁
I used it a bit in the past. I really do like Manjaro KDE. Arch is really nice.
Not seen anything else that I fancy using, tbh.
does "TRIAC dimming" here mean "behaves correctly when attached to a TRIAC dimmer"? My understanding is that the triac would be inside the dimmer at the light switch, not inside this driver.
I suppose it could be using phase control dimming internally (I have a power supply that works that way), but I have no way to tell.
given that it advertises itself as "dimmable" and the unit doesn't have any controls or instructions about its own internal dimming, I'm guessing it does indeed want you to use your own dimmer. thanks for the input
you get a bigger screen, and a EMR stylus that does not rely on the capacitive touch screen
That means that you get the same stability when drawing fast and slow
so, for a layperson that already has an iPad Pro, might as well keep that?
I do
OK
AES stylus can never achieve the iconic feeling of a EMR stylus
OK, so tell me about the differences between those two.
AES means it's actively sending signal back to the display via Bluetooth or sth and requires a battery
EMR means the pen is dumb and only passively returning the locating signal that the EMR panel is sending to it, and the panel use that to locate the stylus
EMR stylus does not need a battery
So pro for AES is cheaper display(because it doesn't need a dedicated panel under the LCD) but more expensive pen and lower stability
EMR displays are really expensive but pens are really cheap if you remove the manufacturer mark up
And I think that's all I know
1st world problems: The high setting on my space heater is too high, and the low setting is too low Q_Q

just don't burn down your building...
I have it on a timer, it can only run 2 hours at a time.
It also has some good safety features
nice
In other news, I think I forgot the FIDO2 PIN for my security key... FML
and, somehow didn't even have it written down in my safe... lessons have been learned
what about additional monitors?
like maybe 2-3 more
you reeally can go wrong with more monitors
unless you mean monitor lizards. Even one is pushing it with those bad boys.
monitor lizards do be lizarding.
they just go CHOMP CHOMP all day
too bad komodo dragons don't breath fire.
thats giving me some eclipse vibes
CCS is based on Eclipse
This is CCS simple mode
Ment for beginners
Which is for me

it looks pretty fully featured to me @hasty wedge
ive been looking for an extra monitor or two, for now the ultra-wide is like two 4:3 next to each other so I use it like that... extra monitor just isn't in the budget right now
Anyone ever break a soda/sugar habit? I did the math and if I just cut out soda and candy from my diet, I would lose the weight I want to lose in a month. But I'm kinda hooked.
For soda, you might consider switching to diet varieties. Artificial sweeteners have their problems, but so does sugar. For candy, the battle is won or lost at the grocery store... keep it out of your house to start with.
I've kicked more "serious" habits before but nothing really compares to my sugar cravings. I'll have to find something low calorie to eat that can fill that void

You might try gum, for example.
Gum could be troublesome, might trigger cravings for stop smoking gum that I just finally got off
It doesn't help that basically everything has sugar added to it these days.
But I figure if I cut out candy and soda that will be enough, for now.
A baby step might be switching to hard candies, that you have to suck on for a while, rather than something which is chewed and consumed quickly. You get more taste per calorie that way.
Oh I know myself. I'll just crunch them. It's gotta be cold turkey. I'm gonna be miserable for a while
You're actually my target customer for a product idea I've been considering! What would you think about a little smart microcontroller tag that attaches to a bag of sweets, which you could configure in an app to light up red or green according to your diet rules... no candy after 8:00pm, or only two per day, or only if you've hit 10,000 steps in your fitness tracker, etc.?
soda contains humongous amounts of sugar. SOmething like 40g per cup
nutrition is so hard
Soda has a ton. I sat down and counted up the calories from soda that I took in today
750
Insane
Switching to sugar free tea where possible
for caffeine?
Yup
nice
I have 2ish cups of black tea with cream most mornings. It's nice
London fog is great, and doesn't take that much vanilla (= sugar) to taste good
I'm thinking I'll replace some of sugar calories with fat calories and it will keep me satiated.
the extreme form of that would be keto
Yeah I don't need that. I'm only looking to lose 5-10 lbs to be at my goal weight
And I love carbs too much
it took me over month but I have had drank water for over a decade now. it takes some time to get used drinking water, expecially food or snacks that work well with soda.
here we go again... like 15-20 gunshots in a row, probably half km away
I drink tons of water too.
I'll just have to get used to drinking tons×2 of water
and a bunch of sirens just blasted past
Maybe sparkling water is a good path
sparkling water is great
I need to know what is wrong with people in this city.
I am now on super high alert, there was literally a car chase in my neighborhood and people shooting. I'd go get a 12-pack of beverages but I am afraid to leave my house because I am not entirely sure where the gunmen are.
So much for going to bed.
Obviously you've considered this, but maybe consider moving?
I have considered that. It would be good to do it now as well, because our property price is up quite a bit from when we bought the house.
However, it's not something that's easily done, because we'd need to find a house to buy, and it's a seller's market right now. People are buying houses, in cash, and bidding way over asking price.
||<gallowshumor>Maybe they'll all kill each other soon?</gallowshumor>||
it is weird that the candela is an SI base unit, right?
just spent a while trying to figure out why candelas don't have the same units as power, and came to the conclusion that they do
candela is just weird in general
Isn't candela also a member of the Elite 4 at one point?
Also why do you have to beat the 5 best trainers in a row just to prove you're good enough?
Or is it to be the best? I don't recalll
@lusty fossil remember that unused sugars is converted to fat by the body.
Indeed, that drives my desire to cut them out
Metabolism is extremely complicated
The body does not like to give up it's fat, this is the bane of most diets and why they fail
yeah i'm not gonna do anything crazy, just cut out excess sugar and increase exercise. I'm hoping since my goal is modest I'll be able to achieve it
I try to watch my total calories per meal and watch my portions, you can help the body by consuming more plant fibre since it makes you feel full but does not contain a lot of sugars and carbs that processed food carries
Yeah I've been eating a lot of salads lately. I'm gonna start bringing salad mix to work and just eat that with oil/vinegar dressing for lunch
unfortunately the only place near my work that serves salads can't seem to figure out how NOT to cross contaminate mine with cheese (allergic). So I'm stuck making my own
Another method is to make juices from plants with a juicer
Yeah I don't have the counter space for a juicer
I have the juicer but also lack counter space
That loses the fiber, right?
there are two types of fibre soluble and nonsoluble, you lose the soluble
I also don't want to clean a juicer TBH
Oh, speaking of the shooting... happened less than half a km from my house. I accidentally drove past the scene on my way to the convenience store.
cops cars everywhere, blueberry juice mixers on max, and a bunch of yellow tape and flash lights
yes there is the cleaning downside but the health benefits are high
you get a juicer that the parts can go in the dishwasher
My dog just sneezed into my open mouth. Does anyone want to adopt a 65 lb dog with no boundaries?
Had to use a lot of mouthwash to not feel gross
dogs just trying to feed you best it can lol
Ooooooof
I would never get rid of her, she's done worse and gotten away with it. She's my girl
She gets lots of kisses
it's like humans never learn to not open their mouths in front of dogs...
or to not rub cat bellies that do not want to be rubbed...
So do most people just think spam is disgusting? Because I unironically love fried spam over rice
The texture changes when you fry it. Add some spices while frying and they basically seep into the meat.
Spam sandwich is good too
Personally, I hate spam and everything about it.
I dig it.
A friend has a livestream for her band and it's all 80s cable access vibe.
discovered you can reverse Irwin quick-grips.
this took years to figure out.
So good
Wow going to sugar free is a change taste wise but cuts calories very effectively
I mean, I did work at a 3D printed car startup so you could download a car.
anyone mind trying to go to conxall.com? I'm getting a security error FYI
firefox didn't allow me to connect
same issue with switchcraft.com
but why?
it works in edge if you click the proceed anyways button
the https cert has expired
hmm yeah I wasn't sure if that was a good idea.
@lusty fossil https://switchcraft.com - expired cert
https://conxall.com expired 1 day ago
hopefully they're on it. I just want to find some part drawings!
if you aren't submitting any banking information and just looking at part drawings i wouldn't worry about it
should be fine assuming you don't submit any sensitive data, and don't mind the 30 computers in the route knowing what you are doing :p
lol
Should I let them know their cert is expired?
i would just incase, they probably already know but no harm in doing so
Switchcraft owns conxall so I assume it's the same person responsible for both
For use as a separator.
i just noticed your pfp, it's adorable
Thanks!
is that your fursona?
Yea
any more pictures?

my fursona is a skelly.
ooOOooh nice nice
i have suit in the works with a bunch of adafruit stuff.
for the LEDs.
neopixels are absolutely great
OOH! My friend (who drew the last pic I sent) has been working on a suit. She's been wanting me to help with electronics in the future, haha!
i'm hoping it'll be will be good enough for a #show-and-tell
i wore some if it to magfest
AAA nice
magfest was this past weekend
my tail is a singular spine going all the way
Niiice
What're the wires on your left hand?
working on this back piece.
WOA
I need to pick up some neopixels...
What're you using to run the whole thing?
thats a WIP, as a build everything, it's flipped over
near my left hand is the cord mess.
as my fursona badge glows -- 8x8 neopixel + 3d print of the head
the eyes are 12 neopixel rings
and the back piece is 3 meter neopixel strip
Love it
each one is on Stemma QT Py and powered by a massive USB Battery pack
-- the wiring mess.
i need make a harness i can wear under the shirt that would hide it better
the normal lithium ion packs are great, but i want something i dont' have worry about power draw
Drawing too much current?
it's a 2 part problem.
i don't want additional weight in the fursuit head -- the 3D print is already heavy enough
i want to be fursuiting until i'm too tired to suit, not because my suit has run out power
DOes creating an account count as submitting sensitive information?
to a website?
I used a dummy username and a randomly generated password
don't reuse passwords, and change it later.
treat the website as unencypted.
Shoot that's true... interesting problem...
i love that the majority of adafruits boards have built in lithium ion chargers and in my original design of it, it would be taking advantage
but in practicality, it's not really an option
Oh yeah, only good for small currents
the back piece draws 1.4 amps for example
What's the voltage of those LED modules?
5v
you can run them lower or dimmer, but i need to have everything visibe in daylight
You using a USB power bank atm?
lemme go link it
sigh, I don't want a step model, I want a drawing! Switchcraft just has bad documentation in general IME
i picked that one for a few reasons. it's got 4 USB ports -- so i split suit into different sections and all have them powered by different QT Pys
and the crazy 25.6 amp power hours... i'm hoping that will give 6-8 hours of wearable time.
so if i forget to charge it, it's not the end of the world
yeah those anker battery banks are fantastic
I have a little Power Delivery dev kit that I can get 5v, 9v, and 15v from it
i think it supports 12v too but the battery bank is an older model
....I guess you can really bank on them?
not in this economy

yes
woah do those have gyroscopes in them or something (based on the first gif)
HAH love the microcontroller just stitched to the side of them.
got some help testing my robot
yeah. i'm probably just going to do something with a nice set of doc martin combat boots
but i don't know
ive always wanted to try putting piezoelectric generators in shoes
def could try with an old pair too
i'm always curious what the level of "good enough" for the show and tell is.
oh man yeah, i know that feeling. i'd definitely say just go for it,
none
I have seen some great and exciting things, but also some very simple ones. So there is no barrier
it is given to people who had shown their stuff at show and tell
cool
it doesn't mean that I have anything to do with running it
That's what I would do, move the battery pack(s) to on your back or waist where the extra weight is easier to support and there's more room, and have cables/connectors from there to the head.
I'm making a podcast called The CircuitPython Show: https://circuitpythonshow.com/ - If anyone wants to be a guest or has an idea for me for someone to reach out to, I'd love to hear feedback. It'll be coming in a couple months.
have you reached out to @fair summit he seems like the perfect guest
any CPy team members

I have reached out to Kattni and Scott who are confirmed for the first season
I've got a teacher also booked and another invite or two out there. I'd like to get to 6 confirmed guests for season one
beyond guests and just standard interviewss
what else are going to adds
deep dives into things like memory management?
i'm going to start out with an interview show with different guest each episode
One thing at a time. 🙂
take a look at what software engineering radio does
they do interviews but it's structured with a specific topic
rather than open ended, they focus on just one thing to guide the conversation
Cool, I've been thinking something similar
As I've researched each potential guest I've thought of a theme almost for that episode, so similar
thats good
Nice!
Turns out that AdafruitIO is quite a useful debug logging tool 😅 I got it to upload the last trace after a circuitpython watchdog reboot
that is very clever!
Anyone know if they make larger-than-printer-paper sized shipping labels? I use shipping labels with cutouts printed on them to dremel out enclosure holes (manufacturer of the enclosure doesn't offer custom machining on the box I need), but I need 20+ inches of paper to do it right. I'm not finding anything on google but I assume I am just using google wrong
Maybe you can buy it by the roll?
so something like ANSI D or ANSI C?
for the US Standard sizes
or A2 for the ISO standard
any printshop would be able to do it
like staples (US)
for a big chain store
they will print 18x24
for example
interesting OK, so I just have to find the large labels. I feel like I've seen giant shipping labels IRL but not finding them in google.
you want some with an adhesive backing as well?
indeed, so I can stick to the enclosure and keep the relative spacing intact
let me see...
the biggest i'm finding is 11" x 14"...
you might just need to dyi it with spray adhesive..
spray the back of it. and stick it on
That's a good idea
another idea
going in a completely diffeent direction
you would use something like a cricut machine to create a template for the holes
because that can make a vinyl sticker up to 12 feet in length -- more than enough for your use
then just use a regular label for everything else
hmmm I like it but I don't know if I can buy a cricut for just one project? I was hoping to print out a Fusion360 drawing that has the hole pattern I want. Is there a way to supply the cricut with CAD data?
there are bunch of vinyl stickers sellers all over etsy. i'm sure you could give one of them a poke and see if they will do a custom sticker
It should be able to take like a DXF file, or something converted to/from that.
a 20" x 6" sticker?
yeah
you are limited to just 1 color
and yes cricut will take dxf
along with jpg svg bmp..
so you'll be fine sending it whatever you want
interesting. Maybe I can justify a cricut in the budget
I could also put a call out on craigslist for using someone else's cricut in exchange for a fee
I assume you can get sticker rolls?
The custom order from Etsy might be a good avenue.
Yeah, the cricut material comes in rolls.
interesting
If it's only for one project, anyway.
Another option, if you have a projector: directly project your pattern onto surface in question, then mark all the holes that need to be drilled with a marker?
I don't have to send anyone my design files if I buy a cricut. I'm sure we can find other uses for it.
That makes a bit more sense.
no projector unfortunately. Wouldn't that have scaling issues?
if your enclosure outline is included in your drawing, you should be able to adjust the projector until it lines up.
a projector would work, but you'll get keystoning issues which would be annoying to fiddle with. i think a vinyl sticker might be easier
i would say buy the cricut, because you can also use to cut other things
i want to try it out on Electrolumincent panels i just haven't a chance to
Hmm I think a cricut is worth it. I'll ask my boss if she thinks we could find other uses for it and then add it to my budget/see where that puts me. I feel like one of my coworkers could find a use for it. Does it also print onto the material it cuts?
For a quick turn, your best bet is to print it at staples and tape/glue it down. Really strong magnets are also an option for a temporary template mounting.
the paper solution i was talking about earlier?
Yeah.
If you need to drill the same holes on multiple enclosures, making a drill guide with plastic or wood is an option as well.
I think I'll try the paper and glue method first. I may need to ask for help doing that but that's tolerable
One and done fortunately
You can draw on the material with markers using the Cricut though. It's not printing, but it's something.
hmmm if the cricut can't do precise plotting then it's not really the right tool for the job. I think I'll try with glue and paper first. Cheapest option by far
At that point, you could consider a CNC machine to directly drill the enclosure haha
(Or a template if you’re not confident with alignment. )
haha, Polycase actually offers machining, just not for the enclosure I want
frustrating for sure
nice
I first read that as "fight sim" and thought those handle bars were boxing gloves you were supposed to use to punch the other person
@lusty fossil you can buy letter-size vinyl stickers that you can print on using regular inkjet printer: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07T83CSCG
much better than paper and glue
i need some help i found two live .22 bullets but i dont just want to toss them in the trash, suggestions on disposing safely?
was thinking of just pulling out the lead tips but not sure how safe that is
Police would probably take them
Maybe a gun range near you? Ammo is expensive I hear.
Day 1 of new healthy living. Had probably 1/4 the amount of processed sugar I normally have and did 50 situps. One day at a time.
Great! (Personally I hate situps...)
You'll soon have to change your handle to OatsNCinnamon or something like that...
Lololol
I personally hate push-ups because I have some hardware and I guess you could call it software, as it's grafted tissue, in my shoulder and they hurt some when I do pushups
Understandable. I'll trade you for the situps, heh heh, since pushups are my go-to exercise.
Lolol. I got one of those door frame pullup bars, will be here tomorrow
I bought one of those recently, but had to give it away, since when I went to install it, it just started to tear my door-frame apart as I tightened it. Cheap house construction... Ended up getting a free-standing frame instead.
That's a good idea. I am pretty sure the frame will be OK but good to be aware of
Of course I'm still working on being able to do a single pullup with it. Sigh, don't get old and weak...
I'm trying not to!
@lusty fossil i pulled the lead from them, threw out the gun powder and crushed the middle of the shell with a side cutter. problem is if i drop them in the garbage someone will take them and use them for crime.
And our police is corrupt.
i cant stand the idea of something i throw away killing someone later in it's life.
Hmm the lead could be an environmental concern
Seems like you've made it hard for someone to use them for crime
i kept the lead to smelt
Ruined shell casings should be hard to repurpose for crime, I would think
Criminals are resourceful but I don't think they're that resourceful
i doubt they could even try use them
anyone ever get sensors from china that dont give correct temp? I had to offset -2c for the temp to be right, so far working from 3c to 27c, i hope its correct when 40c in summer
it's always best to test sensors from any source and correct reading
a simple LERP should suffice
Me on January 13th: “wow it has been a long year”
I think 2020 never ended
2017 never ended for me
I had some kind of tendonitis / tennis elbow–like injury 7 years ago, and it still feels like I'm about to injure myself every time I try to do push-ups, even incline push-ups that are not taxing on my muscles. I wish I could train for strength in that area but I feel like my body is giving a pretty clear signal. 🤷
I might finally bite and get a set of dumbbells, since dumbbell bench press seems like it can be applied and measured very precisely, and I think doesn't need a spot if you stay light
Dumbbell sets are expensive though
One. Raspberry. Pi. 4. At. A. Time. Yet another 4 ordered.
Also, someone over in the Pimoroni Discord took an angle grinder to their Pi to try to remove headers they soldered to it. It obviously didn't work.
I can feel the physical shock to the IC just by looking at the picture
Poor RPi
¯_(ツ)_/¯
They just need a bigger angle grinder. Would be guaranteed to remove everything in 10 ft radius, including headers
hah, I've been trying to write an introduction message, but the words just won't come to me today 😛
sorry, I didn't mean to take your breath away with the angle grinder pic
people make all sorts of mistakes all the time
It's like... hey, there's a scratch on my glass table, I should probably just Dremel that straight off! My wife tells me I am a hammer. I think angle grinder beats hammers any day. 😄
Anyway, TBH I don't really work with hardware, but I do have a technical job -- I came across the adafruit Code of Conduct repo on github, liked the fact that you guys have a CoC, and joined
welcome!
Welcome!
Thanks!
I have the one raspberry pi, that's sitting in my drawer, unused
It's literally The One Raspberry Pi [TM]
to rule them all
Used to use it as a generic linux mini-server, then bought a proper NAS
The thing has been sitting in my drawer ever since
I am not really into smart home stuff
I really like FPGAs, though
Haven't had time to play with them in a long time though
I haven't messed with FPGAs specifically. What is the appeal for you?
(I have very limited experience in a lot of electronics stuff, so always interested in learning more)
I remember liking that I could make complex systems that interact with the physical / hardware world without having to solder / design a PCB / physically make a complex circuit
They are a really nice way to find out more about how complex digital circuits (eg CPUs) work
Ah, OK. I know what you're talking about, kind of. Yeah, I never really got into that. There's some games that I own that are similar in nature, and I am not smart enough for them. 😄
Also FYI my nickname literally means 'human being' in Japanese (a language I am learning)
My Japanese is... not great, but it's good enough to understand the gist of a text using a dictionary addon
I know Ohayo, Konnichiwa, and Hai. And that's it. I also think I vaguely remember that Konnichiwa was rude to use, for some reason. So, yeah.
My name means "Thor's Roar" or "Thunder" if you will.
only beings that are aliens call themselves "humans" as if to prove something... 😉 you gave yourself away!
Reminded me of Resident Alien. Not sure if you've seen that?
Nope!
is a featherless biped
Resident Alien was a fun show!
Oh, now I remember seeing the trailer for its next(?) session the other day?
Heh, I got a fake PayPal email including the usual "how to spot a fake" verbiage, describing many of the things about it that indicated its fakeness.
could they not... remove the pins individually?
yeah, all you gotta do is cut off the plastic holding them together and then desolder one at a time... but, why use a buff cloth when you can use a dremel, eh?
sigma grindset, I guess
They were complaining about not being able to desolder the pins, and they were using copper braid and a solder sucker... I was like, wait, did you even use flux?
I'm just going to assume it was a practical joke and keep my already shaky faith in humanity mostly intact. ¯_(ツ)_/¯
What the ||censored||!!!!
Day 2 of low sugar diet. Sigh, aspartame just isn't the same. Oh well
"Low" = just the background sugar that's nearly impossible to avoid in America
You ever try these?
Doesn't Stevia have calories like regular sweeteners? I'm trying to lose some weight
Oh I see the 0 cal thing
Interesting
zero calories
I could chew on those like a horse
yeah, no, don't do that
I unfortunately have no off switch for sugar. I sat and ate an entire family size bag of sour patch kids once
they're an awesome replacement for sugar in beverages like tea and coffee, might be a bit on the sweet side for coffee... I recommend using ONE cube until you know... because once you know, you know... two cubes is usually a massive overkill
Fat? Wheaty Carbs? Protein? Those fill me up. With sugar I can just keep going
We can all do it. Sure, do I prefer to eat an entire party bag of Ruffles in a sitting, yes. Can I stop myself? In all honesty, yeah, it's not that hard. Makes you antsy when you crave something. Like, the weird intersection between not smoking/vaping and not drinking leads to some neurotic shenanigans. My body is usually like, WHY ARE WE DOING THIS... and I'm like, bro, I have no clue.
Sugar is a powerful drug.
Says everybody who has never detoxed off of heroin.
Sugar is nothing compared to cigarettes, or even alcohol.
Sugar is easy. Probably the easiest thing I ever quit as far as cravings go. Coffee was way, way, way, way worse. I had headaches for weeks.
Didn't you just quit smoking too?
May want to maybe chill on the no sugar for a bit until your body has some time to establish a new baseline. Quitting everything at once has never worked out well for me. Like, I mean, people almost died (no joke) "not well."
Idk I'm doing nicotine detox right now and my sugar cravings are as bad
Never done the other
I'm tired of gaining weight so I'm doing both. It's maybe not the smartest but we'll see
Main problem is stopping cigarettes makes you crave snacks and whatever else because it satisfies that reptile brain dumbness of moving your hand back and forth to your mouth and inhaling.
Yeah, there's not really anything that compares to detoxing off of the big H. You're basically going entirely out of your mind, and your body is completely rebelling, and, did I mention, without proper care you could actually die? I mean, you can do that if you quit certain SSRIs cold turkey too...
Our bodies are dumb computers. They establish a dependency on something, and they will literally stop working if we don't give them whatever crap we got them hooked on. Cigarettes were really bad for me. They would not only affect my mood/irritability, but they would also attack my short term memory and certain other cognitive functions, and basically shut them down until nicotine was introduced. It's nasty. Remaps and shuts down entire neural pathways and holds them hostage until you supply nicotine.
So, yeah. It took me years and a few relapses. But I've finally quit nicotine.
Been entirely smoke free since some time in 2019. Can't even indulge in the chill pointy-leafed plant that some states have made legal. Because apparently it interacts with my heart meds and makes my blood pressure plummet. Which in turn wreaks havoc on my heart so my pulse increases, quite rapidly. Meditation isn't really working. There's still people and cars and things everywhere. I basically want to move away, live life in a cabin in the mountains. And just have someone come check on me every few weeks and bring me some newly downloaded YouTube videos and maybe a couple of electronics projects, and you know, make sure I don't start collecting odd, broken typewriters and take up new hobbies involving wood and metal craft.
¯_(ツ)_/¯
recently picked that my pc was exploited and the 2 dead giveaways i have hacked gpu drivers were, display flickering black when initializing hardware layers and discord being unable to correctly use layers when streaming or watching streaming, a dead giveaway is you cannot popout the streaming window it will just disappear or the black flicker when your chromium based browser is opened to display media or closed.
And then, how did you figure out the rest? Flagged files by antivirus?
i looked thru windows's logs when fixing it all and compared the hashes for the driver files.
other people have admitted having to wipe due to the same side effects after installing just one of several highly popular games.
one being a huge E-sport.. the problem is they break windows update by injecting into Settings.exe
in severe cases they actually do alot to a system as the attack works as a remote access trojan
Wait a second… Recent win versions only load signed drivers
And they get quite obvious when signing verification has been disabled
trust me i'm not even joking
So there must have been a primary exploit, or the drivers were somehow signed…?
