Man my local pharmacy is feeling the labor crunch. No one's answering the phones and my prescriptions haven't been delivered today, 3 days (next business day) after I ordered them. I can't pick it up because I'm waiting on covid test results. It's a bummer, they are nice folks. Wouldn't want to work there right now.

I have an NVMe SSD enclosure with a USB-C port. Am I correct that pretty much no SSD inside there is going to need extra cooling apparatus because the loads that create that kind of heat only happen at data transfer speeds higher than USB can support?

Speaking about shipping things from US to NZ and struck a tangential point with shipping costs and the shipping industry being affected by COVID... So, now I intended to present you with some scenarios...

I've done it [have someone mail me a bunch of smaller orders domestically, and then I ship one big box] before for friends in Sweden. Admittedly, that was before every shipping company on the planet decided that [insert job of person that never sees other people] can't come to work because of COVID. It's like, truckers. When do they ever really have to come closer than 6 feet to anyone?

lusty fossil
#

@fading hare I've been to Sweden. In the summer. I don't think I could handle the winters. I don't think I could handle being any further from the equator than I currently am, if I'm being honest.

#

Sweden was quite nice in the summer. Maybe when I'm one of the idle rich I'll summer there.

fading hare
#

The winters are pretty mild in Sweden.

lusty fossil
#

I get cold below 60F

#

65 tbh

fading hare
#

I am the exact opposite. I overheat if it's above 72.

#

But, yeah, winters in Sweden (obviously vary depending on your distance to the north pole) but they tend to be pretty mellow, in comparison to a lot of the northern states in the US.

lusty fossil
#

I'm a dry heat person. I don't want to live near family so I'll wait until they all die, but eventually I'll live in the American Southwest and collect geckos or whatever they do

fading hare
#

You'll see temps might hit -10'C if it's really cold, and that's like... 22'F?

#

Not even minus F.

lusty fossil
#

Ahhhhh nooooo, just thinking about -10C is making me sad

#

I don't like warming up by putting on clothes, I prefer to be hot than to be cold, to a great degree

It seems so weird that they thought it was appropriate to name their site after a terrorist group. TBF a mild terrorist group, but still terrorists.

fading hare
#

funny part is, this is the weather in Charlotte, NC right now

#

it's going to be colder here than it was in my hometown in Sweden

#

sure, it does fluctuate with the distance to the air/water streams that bring warmer water up towards Scandinavia. When I was a kid we had glorious winters. These days? They're lucky if they see snow for a few days.

lusty fossil
#

Remind me of the PNW

#

glad I'm out of there

fading hare
#

but without all the humidity

#

that's what makes the PNW such a miserable place (in my opinion)

lusty fossil
#

In the summer. The air is dry in Oregon in the winter. It's just snowy as all get out

fading hare
#

Oregon is amazing.

#

I was in Bend for a week, visiting a friend. Drove my new truck out there from UT when we were visiting my wife's family.

#

We actually ended up getting the truck in SLC because I had driven my Hyundai Tucson out there (it was mid-pandemic) instead of flying, so I was driving back home in one configuration or another. I was talking trucks with someone in her family. I said I had looked at Tacomas but they were just super overpriced for what you get. He looks at me like I sprouted two heads and barks out "you know I work for Ford, right? Have you even seen the new Rangers?!" So, I ended up getting my dream truck that wasn't a Tacoma, I just didn't know that the new Rangers were so handsome.

lusty fossil
#

I want an f150 lightning but I don't have near 6 figures to blow on a vehicle

fading hare
#

I wanted a Ranger Raptor, but yeah, same same.

#

Since they're so scarce the dealerships basically sell to the highest bidder.

lusty fossil
#

Yeah trucks are nuts. I basically want an electric vehicle or a plug in hybrid at the very least. It would be nice to also not need to rent a truck when I want to haul wood somewhere

fading hare
#

Why electric?

#

Please don't say "for the environment."

wooden schooner
fading hare
# wooden schooner Please elaborate

in about... 25 years, all those batteries that are in that Tesla... they're going to have to go somewhere... they don't just... disappear, like bananas on a hike.

wooden schooner
#

How do they justify it

fading hare
#

processing those batteries will cost way more in carbon emissions than me driving a gas powered truck

#

I haven't seen them justify it. They don't really talk about what happens to your vehicle in the end.

wooden schooner
#

What does processing mean? And, if it costs money, then what will make people do it instead of throwing the batteries in a landfill?

fading hare
#

Processing means you can't just chuck the entire battery pack because it consists of nested arrays of 18650 batteries that are wired up in some fancy way to extend the amount of cycles/depletion/whatever. So you have to take the pack off of the vehicle. Take it apart. Take out all the little batteries. Git rid of any wrappings or whatever else, and then do something with that raw material. Which is... super bad for the planet.

lusty fossil
# fading hare Why electric?

Gas prices and I suspect we'll solve the battery problem before too long. There's going to be a lot of governmental pressure to do so

#

Where I live, most power is renewable. I can't get solar because of tree cover but we have other sources. So I wouldn't be refueling with dirty power.

fading hare
#

Yeah, so that's going to fix it for 1% of the population.

#

What about the rest of the plebs? They just gonna walk?

wooden schooner
fading hare
wooden schooner
#

I am not trying to play dumb

fading hare
#

Ideals are lofty and adorable, but, real world application on a nationwide level for at least a hundred million drivers, that's something entirely different. The price of a Tesla is currently what... $60k or something?

#

Or, is the environment only important for the rich silicon valley yuppies that can afford a Tesla?

wooden schooner
#

I am saying, why do you think the batteries are going to be processed at all rather than just thrown in landfills

#

This is independent of how bad Tesla is

fading hare
#

(And let's get straight, I can definitely afford a Tesla, in case you were to steer towards envy)

#

@wooden schooner well, that strengthens my point then

#

landfills are even worse

wooden schooner
#

No it doesn't

fading hare
#

you ever heard of coal ash?

lusty fossil
#

BEV prices are coming down across the board. It won't be too long before middle class folks can justify one.

wooden schooner
#

It's a question, for my own understanding

fading hare
#

or you're leading me on, because I am not very intelligent, either way, I am down

lusty fossil
#

I suspect there will be a period of time where we dispose of them improperly, but a series of whistleblowers will force us to do better

fading hare
#

so, look up coal ash

lusty fossil
#

I'm aware

fading hare
#

And tell me that you can guarantee that the landfill will contain those heavy metals and whatever for eternity and that's cool. I'm on board. We were talking about the environment, right? You know, the same one that will be here for our children and their children...

#

They'd have to use something like concrete or similar, to line that fill with, well, they're more likely just underground storage facilities

wooden schooner
#

It is bad. Sounds like you're not interested in answering my question though

fading hare
lusty fossil
#

my friend is an environmental engineer. Landfills can be remediated.

#

works for tesla actually

#

or will soon

fading hare
lusty fossil
#

The lead crisis in flint is unrelated to disposal of batteries or any other waste and is mostly a story of corruption in local government

#

state and local

fading hare
#

So you can guarantee that Tesla and all its vendors and subsidiaries will somehow be more ethical about the disposal of their batteries? If not, then like I said, the environmental motivation for getting an EV over a gas truck is to me, just something I am passing the buck on for 25 years.

lusty fossil
#

the truth is, we spent a century making our cities impossible to live in if you don't drive. Redlining/suburbia made this worse. It's the mess we're in. It's also true that continuing to use ICE cars is going to contribute to the death of our biosphere. We have to transition off of ICE.

I would suggest that it's the government's job to make tesla et. al act sustainably.

fading hare
lusty fossil
#

whether that will happen is anyone's guess, but we cannot afford to not try. You can't affect the environment without affecting the environment. Solar panels and wind turbines have a carbon footprint as well, but we can't just stick with coal and oil because there are issues with renewables.

fading hare
#

You are correct. We are moving in the right direction.

lusty fossil
#

All our children will curse us if we skip out on the BEV revolution because we weren't solid on where we would put the waste yet. I'd argue they deserve to curse us now for slowing down on nuclear power.

fading hare
#

I'm just being real about the whole problem. If people want to think that they are saving the environment by buying a Tesla, cool. The reality is vastly more complicated, and they may actually end up with an even larger load of CO2 Karma.

lusty fossil
#

well now I'm in a bad mood because I accidentally ordered a 3' USBC cable when I need 6'

fading hare
#

I agree, see, that's why I like talking about these things. Someone usually has a brighter version of whatever my broken brain has decided to be cynical about.

lusty fossil
#

Gonna have to go through the whole rigamarole of returning it AND wait for the right one to come

lusty fossil
#

I guess I can go to Worst Buy when my (hopefully) negative covid test comes in

#

Oh I did order from amazon

#

But returning involves a whole thing

fading hare
#

half of the time they'll refund you right away and credit your account, or send a whole new cable out and you get to keep the other one

lusty fossil
#

They actually did a good job last time. I goofed and sent two too small belts back in one package instead of 2. They figured it out on their end though and credited me for both

fading hare
#

returning is pretty easy these days... the dropoff locations are easy to get to, you don't need to box anything, it's just like... [toss crap you didn't want at some poorly paid clerk and walk off]

lusty fossil
#

I have to go to a store like someone from the freakin 90s

fading hare
#

They've never done me wrong either.

#

Man, I miss the 90s.

lusty fossil
#

Jeff Bezos' very public midlife crisis while his ex gives all their money away has been blissful though

fading hare
#

I couldn't care less about Jeff Bezos. He's a mythical creature, something I will never attain or tangent, so if he got disappeared today, a puppet account could keep him alive for the next 500 years and I would never have noticed.

#

But, it has been kind of fun. And, not just Bezos! Melinda Gates.

lusty fossil
#

Oh yeah she's flourishing too I think

fading hare
#

She's laying down a hurtin' on old Bill.

lusty fossil
#

Good to see these women who put up with these godawful men get away

fading hare
#

he cheated on her, and she just did the right thing and went straight for his wallet

lusty fossil
#

now she did try to argue that we "need billionaires" so she gets limited praise from me

#

It's more the being in opposition to Bill that I approve of

fading hare
#

probably not a lot of yelling, she probably just quietly contacted her lawyers and drew up papers and preserved condemning evidence for the court appearance, and yeah, half of MANY DOLLARS were hers. She didn't even have to short Gamestop stock.

#

well, if you actually look at how much money, well spent, she has funneled into charities, where it matters, she's got a pretty strong track record of not messing about... she doesn't just throw her money away to cook the tax books, she actually does good things... so, in a way, maybe we do need billionaires

#

the other option, "everyone being equal" has failed in several different matrix simulations, like we all know (hint, Russia) so I dunno... it's a flawed, but somewhat working system... except for the massive wage gaps... it's like. people make $15/hour working at McDonalds, and someone like Musk launches a freakin car into space for the LULZ.

#

and there's a long string of gunshots, pardon me, that was super close

#

can't see anything... must have been a street over...

#

not even sure we'll last 25 years if people keep shooting each other basically every other day...

#

just hoping none of those bullets hit a bystander, or some kid in their bed... because drive-bys are the worst

#

And it's gotten progressively worse since COVID. These people can't afford EVs. They got laid off from whatever normal job they had in the restaurant industry or any of the in-person service jobs that were completely eradicated in 2020. Sure, we can drive our Teslas to the garage and take the Boosted Board to the office and snicker in their direction and tell them to learn how to code...

#

There's the Citizen report. Five gunshots heard? Uh, no. That was 15-20, and then another five.

#

Yeah. 900 feet away from where I live.

crystal ore
#

20? Ouch. Multiple weapons or a big magazine...

#

fading hare
#

OK, others also confirmed they heard the same cadence/amount of shots. I called 911 just to let them know it wasn't 5 shots. I drive past that house almost every day.

#

but, I think it was two different weapons, they sounded differently, the first one was very steady, definitely not auto, and then the last 5 sounded different, so perhaps someone else fired, or someone returned fire...

Aluminum is more reactive than iron, but its oxide is hard, so it quickly forms a layer of protective oxide and then the process of oxidation is blocked. Iron, on the other hand, has a softer, more permeable oxide, so a layer of oxide is non protective, and the oxidation process continues.

Dono, not really involved anymore. The cool kids who were using OpenStack all moved to Kubernetes and so it still works and does stuff and everything but I dono if it's ever going to be the success the creators intended.

#

There's literally no competition in the space for it because pretty much everybody realized that orchestrating racks of hypervisors for the purposes of providing a vague analog to AWS was not actually that interesting or lucrative of a problem.

#

And if you wanted to manage hypervisors and didn't trust AWS, VMWare or Azure was probably less trouble.

#

OpenStack was kinda hamstrung because some very well-meaning, nice, super-brilliant people made a really poor call in the first year or two in the middle of the night, hyped up on Mondafinil, while listening to Infected Mushroom.

wooden schooner
#

What was that call?

burnt tendon
#

They decided that being written in Python was an essential part of the stack. They also decided that process or thread pooling wasn't performant enough so they needed to use async. They got mad at Twisted Python, which was the leading async framework, and decided that it was too hard for people to understand and therefore they instead went for this weird green-thread implementation that was perpetually flakey. So the code looked simpler but you had to know all of these weird unwritten rules about calling what and where.

#

I'm not explaining it well, probably.

#

And then they also went hard on using an SQL database and a message queue to do the sorts of things that kubernetes does using etcd with a lot less drama.

#

They very much ignored the concerns of the cluster admin and mostly ignored the concerns of the end user and so, while the setup process for kube 1.2 was preetty whack on an absolute scale, it was actually quite reasonable compared to OpenStack's.

#

Obv solving different problems, but less than you'd think.

AES stylus can never achieve the iconic feeling of a EMR stylus

fading hare

OK, so tell me about the differences between those two.

hasty wedge

AES means it's actively sending signal back to the display via Bluetooth or sth and requires a battery

#

EMR means the pen is dumb and only passively returning the locating signal that the EMR panel is sending to it, and the panel use that to locate the stylus

#

EMR stylus does not need a battery

#

So pro for AES is cheaper display(because it doesn't need a dedicated panel under the LCD) but more expensive pen and lower stability

EMR displays are really expensive but pens are really cheap if you remove the manufacturer mark up

Anyone ever break a soda/sugar habit? I did the math and if I just cut out soda and candy from my diet, I would lose the weight I want to lose in a month. But I'm kinda hooked.

I have reached out to Kattni and Scott who are confirmed for the first season

I've got a teacher also booked and another invite or two out there. I'd like to get to 6 confirmed guests for season one

they do interviews but it's structured with a specific topic

#

Cool, I've been thinking something similar

#

As I've researched each potential guest I've thought of a theme almost for that episode, so similar

Anyone know if they make larger-than-printer-paper sized shipping labels? I use shipping labels with cutouts printed on them to dremel out enclosure holes (manufacturer of the enclosure doesn't offer custom machining on the box I need), but I need 20+ inches of paper to do it right. I'm not finding anything on google but I assume I am just using google wrong

crystal ore
#

Maybe you can buy it by the roll?

dusty citrus
#

for the US Standard sizes

#

or A2 for the ISO standard

lusty fossil
#

yeah something like that

#

@dusty citrus

#

I also have to find a place to print it

dusty citrus
#

any printshop would be able to do it

#

like staples (US)

#

for a big chain store

#

they will print 18x24

#

for example

lusty fossil
#

interesting OK, so I just have to find the large labels. I feel like I've seen giant shipping labels IRL but not finding them in google.

dusty citrus
#

you want some with an adhesive backing as well?

lusty fossil
#

indeed, so I can stick to the enclosure and keep the relative spacing intact

dusty citrus
#

let me see...

#

the biggest i'm finding is 11" x 14"...

#

you might just need to dyi it with spray adhesive..

#

spray the back of it. and stick it on

lusty fossil
#

That's a good idea

dusty citrus
#

another idea

#

going in a completely diffeent direction

#

you would use something like a cricut machine to create a template for the holes

#

because that can make a vinyl sticker up to 12 feet in length -- more than enough for your use

#

then just use a regular label for everything else

lusty fossil
#

hmmm I like it but I don't know if I can buy a cricut for just one project? I was hoping to print out a Fusion360 drawing that has the hole pattern I want. Is there a way to supply the cricut with CAD data?

dusty citrus
#

there are bunch of vinyl stickers sellers all over etsy. i'm sure you could give one of them a poke and see if they will do a custom sticker

crystal ore
#

It should be able to take like a DXF file, or something converted to/from that.

lusty fossil
#

a 20" x 6" sticker?

dusty citrus
#

yeah

lusty fossil
#

22" x 6 "*

#

Interesting

dusty citrus
#

you are limited to just 1 color

lusty fossil
#

that's fine

#

I'm cutting the ink part out anyways

dusty citrus
#

and yes cricut will take dxf

#

along with jpg svg bmp..

#

so you'll be fine sending it whatever you want

lusty fossil
#

interesting. Maybe I can justify a cricut in the budget

#

I could also put a call out on craigslist for using someone else's cricut in exchange for a fee

#

I assume you can get sticker rolls?

stray wind
#

The custom order from Etsy might be a good avenue.

#

Yeah, the cricut material comes in rolls.

lusty fossil
stray wind
#

If it's only for one project, anyway.

thick wind
#

Another option, if you have a projector: directly project your pattern onto surface in question, then mark all the holes that need to be drilled with a marker?

lusty fossil
#

I don't have to send anyone my design files if I buy a cricut. I'm sure we can find other uses for it.

lusty fossil
thick wind
#

if your enclosure outline is included in your drawing, you should be able to adjust the projector until it lines up.

dusty citrus
#

a projector would work, but you'll get keystoning issues which would be annoying to fiddle with. i think a vinyl sticker might be easier

dusty citrus
#

i want to try it out on Electrolumincent panels i just haven't a chance to

lusty fossil
#

Hmm I think a cricut is worth it. I'll ask my boss if she thinks we could find other uses for it and then add it to my budget/see where that puts me. I feel like one of my coworkers could find a use for it. Does it also print onto the material it cuts?

dusty citrus
#

no.

#

you'll need a much more expensive machine for that

thick wind
#

For a quick turn, your best bet is to print it at staples and tape/glue it down. Really strong magnets are also an option for a temporary template mounting.

dusty citrus
thick wind
#

Yeah.

#

If you need to drill the same holes on multiple enclosures, making a drill guide with plastic or wood is an option as well.

lusty fossil
#

I think I'll try the paper and glue method first. I may need to ask for help doing that but that's tolerable

stray wind
#

You can draw on the material with markers using the Cricut though. It's not printing, but it's something.

lusty fossil
#

hmmm if the cricut can't do precise plotting then it's not really the right tool for the job. I think I'll try with glue and paper first. Cheapest option by far

thick wind
#

At that point, you could consider a CNC machine to directly drill the enclosure haha

#

(Or a template if you’re not confident with alignment. )

lusty fossil
#

haha, Polycase actually offers machining, just not for the enclosure I want

#

frustrating for sure

fading hare

lusty fossil
#

I unfortunately have no off switch for sugar. I sat and ate an entire family size bag of sour patch kids once

fading hare
#

they're an awesome replacement for sugar in beverages like tea and coffee, might be a bit on the sweet side for coffee... I recommend using ONE cube until you know... because once you know, you know... two cubes is usually a massive overkill

lusty fossil
#

Fat? Wheaty Carbs? Protein? Those fill me up. With sugar I can just keep going

fading hare
#

We can all do it. Sure, do I prefer to eat an entire party bag of Ruffles in a sitting, yes. Can I stop myself? In all honesty, yeah, it's not that hard. Makes you antsy when you crave something. Like, the weird intersection between not smoking/vaping and not drinking leads to some neurotic shenanigans. My body is usually like, WHY ARE WE DOING THIS... and I'm like, bro, I have no clue.

lusty fossil
#

Sugar is a powerful drug.

fading hare
#

Says everybody who has never detoxed off of heroin.

#

Sugar is nothing compared to cigarettes, or even alcohol.

#

Sugar is easy. Probably the easiest thing I ever quit as far as cravings go. Coffee was way, way, way, way worse. I had headaches for weeks.

#

Didn't you just quit smoking too?

#

May want to maybe chill on the no sugar for a bit until your body has some time to establish a new baseline. Quitting everything at once has never worked out well for me. Like, I mean, people almost died (no joke) "not well."

lusty fossil
#

Idk I'm doing nicotine detox right now and my sugar cravings are as bad

#

Never done the other

#

I'm tired of gaining weight so I'm doing both. It's maybe not the smartest but we'll see

fading hare
#

Main problem is stopping cigarettes makes you crave snacks and whatever else because it satisfies that reptile brain dumbness of moving your hand back and forth to your mouth and inhaling.

lusty fossil
#

Yeah I'm eating pop corn

#

That fills me up fast

#

Unsalted, no butter popcorn

fading hare
#

Yeah, there's not really anything that compares to detoxing off of the big H. You're basically going entirely out of your mind, and your body is completely rebelling, and, did I mention, without proper care you could actually die? I mean, you can do that if you quit certain SSRIs cold turkey too...

#

Our bodies are dumb computers. They establish a dependency on something, and they will literally stop working if we don't give them whatever crap we got them hooked on. Cigarettes were really bad for me. They would not only affect my mood/irritability, but they would also attack my short term memory and certain other cognitive functions, and basically shut them down until nicotine was introduced. It's nasty. Remaps and shuts down entire neural pathways and holds them hostage until you supply nicotine.

#

So, yeah. It took me years and a few relapses. But I've finally quit nicotine.

#

Been entirely smoke free since some time in 2019. Can't even indulge in the chill pointy-leafed plant that some states have made legal. Because apparently it interacts with my heart meds and makes my blood pressure plummet. Which in turn wreaks havoc on my heart so my pulse increases, quite rapidly. Meditation isn't really working. There's still people and cars and things everywhere. I basically want to move away, live life in a cabin in the mountains. And just have someone come check on me every few weeks and bring me some newly downloaded YouTube videos and maybe a couple of electronics projects, and you know, make sure I don't start collecting odd, broken typewriters and take up new hobbies involving wood and metal craft.

#

¯_(ツ)_/¯

recently picked that my pc was exploited and the 2 dead giveaways i have hacked gpu drivers were, display flickering black when initializing hardware layers and discord being unable to correctly use layers when streaming or watching streaming, a dead giveaway is you cannot popout the streaming window it will just disappear or the black flicker when your chromium based browser is opened to display media or closed.

raw jasper

dusk oracle

trust me i'm not even joking
