I also end up using atmega328p because they are already 5V, and examples work out if the box

I like circuitpython but I don’t have level shifters on hand lol..

I generally support the idea behind using paper straws, but I just wish Bk would save some plastic ones for their frozen drinks

Is the diffusion accomplished with a very thin print layer?

That's so cool!!!

What are "bindings" in this context?
"PyQt is a set of Python bindings for The Qt Company's Qt application framework and runs on all platforms supported by Qt including Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS and Android. PyQt6 supports Qt v6, PyQt5 supports Qt v5 and PyQt4 supports Qt v4. "

crystal ore
lusty fossil
#

Ahh ok cool

crystal ore
#

(That's because Qt itself is probably written in another language.)

lusty fossil
#

That was my next question

#

Ok, what should I google to learn about how an application can be written in one language but called by another?

crystal ore
#

Well, there is a standard binary interface for libraries on many OSes, so you can call a function in it no matter how it was written, assuming it's been compiled to machine code. Interpreted languages like Python get a little trickier, so they generally need some cross-language support as part of the interpreter. In Python, for example, there's https://docs.python.org/3/library/ctypes.html

lusty fossil
#

Very very cool

#

Thank you

lusty fossil

I wonder if in the future we'll have machine vision radars in our cars to be able to tell how fast someone is going. No more "wow that guy was going fast!" Because it will just show up on your HUD

#

I think Tesla has something like that

#

I didn't notice my friend's car telling how fast other cars were going but it did recognize them

umbral phoenix

recognize?

#

like, that they were cars, or more specific?

lusty fossil
#

Yeah cars, people, traffic lights

#

It was pretty neat

Just saw a video of a 3d printed HDMI-garden hose adapter. They plugged a cable into a laptop and turned on the hose on the other end. Water came leaking out of the keyboard and screen.

Just curious, does Adafruit manufacture their PCBs in house?

they put millions of dollars of maple in a warehouse with a single camera and 2 guards, the guards were bribed to look the other way and they would roll a truck in take the barrels and bring them back filled with pond water, but after they realized it was so easy they just put empty barrels back

I'll probably do video as just a basic controller off a slightly overclocked ATMega chip

#

With a clock frequency chosen to make interrupt timing line up with the video signal timing

#

Something like 20MHz for a pseudo 800x600@60Hz signal but with chunky pixels

#

So probably end up being a max of 200x150

silver shale
#

challenge is getting a ATMega nowadays

quartz wren
#

I have some spares

#

One that's perfect for the job too I think

silver shale
#

got plenty of Z86 MCUs now

quartz wren
#

I found an ATMega328p with mangled but not broken pins

#

I'm thinking I can use its IO for the CPU to address its onboard memory using some kind of interrupt routine for frame buffering since the CPU will only be operating at 1 MHz

#

Then it just addresses it like a RAM chip and then the MCU bangs out the graphics signal

#

Probably monochrome but I want it to do VGA because I don't have anything with composite input at the moment

#

Hmm maybe not monochrome I'll have to figure out how I'm doing the IO buffering then I'll see how many pins I have left over, may need a few latches and a common data bus, then I can go up to whatever color depth the system has speed for if I use the same 8 bit bus and a transceiver for pushing data to the MCU as for setting the pixel latches

#

Then if I have 3 pixel latches and a return value latch for when the MCU reads out the 0th address within the MCU controlled address block for future coprocessor expansion via software it only needs 2 address bits for the latches

#

Or better, use that latch to hold the output when the CPU is requesting any data from the MCU so it can set things up, then move onto its next task

#

Anyway I have the RAM chip, I have the flash chip I want to use which will be able to contain up to 128 software swappable ROM banks, and I have my concept for graphical output

#

May even add another MCU as a coprocessor / IO expander...

#

Okay I'm going back on what I said... I'm using El Pico Yolo for video and some IO, I'm using the Pico for sound synthesis and the remaining IO

#

And since the CPU is already mounted to a board and I'm not confident it will survive another removal, there will be 2 boards in the design. The CPU board and the Pico

#

But there's quite a bit I can pack onto the CPU board especially with chip stacking... May not even need to have floating chips

wooden schooner

No offence to you, if you were the one who got in the magazine, but I feel like the article in the new Make: magazine for a Ducky-Pad completely, shamelessly ripped off Adafruit's Macropad, and then gave no reference or links to Adafruit's one whatsoever.

Furthermore, they were selling it on Tindie, and didn't give any reference to the original creators. I don't know how Adafruit's licensing works, and I know it's open source, which is a great thing, but it just seems like the magazine article author just really should have done the right thing and linked or made a reference to Adafruit's design as well as his own.

I know it feels like Adafruit basically invented the macropad when it came out, but their breakthrough wasn't the Macropad with an OLED display. It was the RP2040 and CircuitPython parts that made it stand out as an affordable high-quality entry-level macropad.

If anything Adafruit drew inspiration from the DuckyPad and other similar devices that started becoming increasingly popular through the late 2010s.

Going to try and have money saved up to see Spider-Man No Way Home and have a sitter

Made a quick demo video of my custom made laser projector ^^

#

No, not anymore

lusty fossil
#

ah dang

tardy badger
#

It kind of sucks. There use to be tons of amenities for families for going out in public

lusty fossil
#

must be more money and less overhead without it

tardy badger
#

Probably

#

Sometimes kids can make places less profitable because they can sometimes make places noisier or less enjoyable

lusty fossil
#

yeah and I don't think the kids menu is always profitable? IDK though, never run a restaurant

#

Denny's seems to be pretty kid friendly though

tardy badger
#

Yeah, kids meals usually lead to adult meals being ordered so they are great lead ins

#

But yeah, part of the decline in family friendly places is due to people having less kids and often opting to shop at home or wait till movies release digitally

#

I mean half the battle is getting you to the store to get something then you've got a good chance of impulse buying

late fulcrum
#

They've kind of given up trying around here.

lusty fossil
#

malls are dying. IDK how to feel about it

late fulcrum
#

It's a positive feedback mechanism too. If there are no stores to lure shoppers, shoppers won't be there. If there are no shoppers, it doesn't pay to open a store.

real falcon
#

it used to be nice to look around and see many stores, but near end it was just 10 different clothes store and 2 or 3 other

#

I havent entered mall for few years now

late fulcrum
#

Amusingly, two of the surviving stores are phone stores. The same carrier, too. I'm guessing that says something about the profit margin of phone stores.

lusty fossil
#

yeah. I was really impressed with the employee who handled my recentish upgrade. They had me out the door in less than an hour. I gave them the highest marks available on the survey

#

I always do that though, even if the service is just "fine", as those metrics are usually interpreted as anything less than perfect is a failure and I'm not gonna do that to someone

stoic mesa
#

from my limited experience, this graph is indeed accurate

#

at least the US and Eastern European parts

tardy badger
#

Lol

#

I fall into some mix of Eastern European and British

tardy badger
#

Which also tends to draw single or stay at home moms looking for a safe place to walk their child

late fulcrum
#

I hear the malls in northern NJ are doing well too.

Trying to take decent pictures too lol

#

The nicest part of my computer?

#

The graphics card lol

idle iron
#

why my moms $700 phone not come with a charger but my $45 phone did? something is wrong here....

tardy badger
#

The brick?

#

Or the cable?

#

Apple and Samsung (part of their pledge to reduce waste) have stopped including charging bricks in their phone packaging

lusty fossil
#

they say it's so that there is less waste since "everyone" has a charger, but I suspect it's so they can sell more chargers. That's just conspiracy theory though

tardy badger
#

They reckon that most people have lots of bricks from previous phone purchases

#

I have, lots of bricks

#

But I don’t have any USB-C bricks so the charging cables that came with my iPhone 12 mini only really works if I want to plug it into my MacBook Pro

delicate stream
#

That's usually what the line is

#

Although I know when I finally get my Pixel 6 Pro I'll just be using all my old chargers anyway

#

I have many many bricks and don't use them all... plus I usually use my 6 port chargers when charging many things at once

delicate stream
# weary fiber

Hehe, Bad Apple demo... nice. What was your build cost for this?

idle iron
#

i was thinking they want people to buy those wireless charging things

delicate stream
#

They probably want folks to buy a charger of some description

#

I don't think they care if it's wired or wireless

lusty fossil
#

I hope Apple (and then by default Samsung) don't go to wireless only charging

delicate stream
#

Same, I don't want wireless if I need to use a pad

#

I don't want to be tied down -- I often use my phone while connected to the charger when my battery is low, and I don't want to have to like, lean over my desk. Plus I don't want the added heat

#

[this is why I'm using my older chargers on the Pixel 6 Pro when I get it -- they won't generate as much heat in the battery since they won't charge it at max]

blissful roost
#

I'm still using the Pixel 2/4 XL chargers.

delicate stream
#

I actually don't know where the stock charger is for my Pixel 2 XL... I realized I had my Nexus 6P charger mixed in with my other random chargers, I've been using it for like Pi and stuff randomly

#

I probably have like 50kW worth of USB chargers, lol

delicate stream
#

lol

late fulcrum
#

Reminds me of the video SparkFun did of an arc welder made from a lot pf chargers

tardy badger
#

Lol

#

I recall that video

#

It’s brilliant

In college a physics prof charged up a ~1mF capacitor to 0.3 Coulomb and asked us how long it would take to discharge across a small copper wire

#

I hope the whole not knowing what he was doing and looking to the TA in the back thing was at least partly just an act

#

He took one guess from a student: "a second" then closed the switch. The little wire evaporated instantly and he told us to hurry out of the lecture hall (it was time to end), "it's not good for you to inhale copper"

#

He was a great prof. Turns out one does not have to have practical electronics skills to do research in quantum chromodynamics

Had a board idea, that I was hoping that Limor & Phil might like & they might consider making & selling.

#

I figured it would have the same size stand offs & screws as the Bonsai Buckaroo, & be a more compact way to easily connect wires, especially if people don't have alligator clip leads.

PIXEL 6 PRO ORDERED YAY! Not shipping until December 22-23… but now I know it’s coming!

#

That part. That change of mood

#

It’s so ridiculously beautiful to me

#

There’s just something so profound about that part, I can’t word it

delicate stream
# blissful roost Why so late for shipping?!?

Insane demand, supply chain issues. I've been trying to place an order for almost a month as it is -- I'd check back often, and the capacity I wanted was almost always out of stock, and when it WAS in stock, it would be out of stock before I could finish checkout

blissful roost
#

Dang...

#

I placed my pre-order on the 20th, so it arrived on release day.

delicate stream
#

I kinda wish I had preordered now. But yeah, preorders didn't really have wait issues

blissful roost
#

Thing is.. my contract wasn't due until December, so I should have been in the same situation.

#

Free early upgrade?
Pixel 6 Pro on pre-order??

Sure, why not..

delicate stream
#

Lol. I haven't had a contract in.... I can't remember. This is only going to be my 3rd new phone in the last decade

blissful roost
#

Nexus 4 = 2012..

#

Sheesh

#

I've had all my best phones in the last 10 years.

delicate stream
#

I've got a Pixel 2 XL, before that was the Nexus 6P. I think I had a Galaxy S4 was what I had before that?

#

But I had the S4 for a few years before I got the 6P

blissful roost
#

N4, N6, Pixel 2 XL, 4 XL, 6 Pro.

#

🙂

#

I like my Google devices. lol

delicate stream
#

Before it actually came around, I was dreaming of a 5 XL as replacement for my 2 XL... I was very disappointed by there not being a big one and the 5 didn't feel like it would be an upgrade over my 2 XL anyway

blissful roost
#

Yeah, I skipped the 5.
Just didn't seem a significant upgrade

delicate stream
#

It's pretty bad when a phone 3 generations back feels like it's the same thing aside from OS updates

blissful roost
#

lol

#

My P2XL is still running strong, currently being used as a bunny cam for Twitch. 😛

delicate stream
#

Seriously though, OS updates [security specifically] is my #1 priority -- I might have kept using my 6P well into the Pixel 4 era if I'd been able to keep it secure and swapped the battery

#

Lol. My Pixel 2 XL has been a bit glitchy in daily use, but battery is the biggest thing

#

But it'll be a B-roll camera probably

#

I still use my 6P for some shots

blissful roost
#

You'll really like the 6 Pro.

delicate stream
#

I'm fairly certain I will

blissful roost
#

🙂

delicate stream
#

There are 3 things I'm not too happy about tho -- 1] in-screen fingerprint sensor 2] no front-facing speakers 3] pinhole

blissful roost
#

Don't use FP.. Top speaker is front-firing.. I think..

#

Yes, the punch hole camera is an annoyance.

delicate stream
#

I just want a Nexus 6P formfactor with new internals

blissful roost
#

4x optical zoom, from about 10 foot away

delicate stream
#

One thing that has annoyed me with the 2 XL is that I almost always have the screen freak out if I grab the phone by the front and back because there's not enough room to grab without touching the screen

blissful roost
#

lol

delicate stream
#

I use fingerprint all the time -- I often put my finger on the sensor as I'm pulling it out, but I don't think I'll be able to do that on the 6 Pro...

blissful roost
#

Narp

delicate stream
#

Personally I don't understand the need to make the ENTIRE front of the phone screen

blissful roost
#

shrugs

#

I'd rather have a good set of front-firing speakers

delicate stream
#

Exactly

blissful roost
#

YT should normally be a lot more... I think I fell asleep with my phone unlocked earlier. Lol

delicate stream
blissful roost
#

So, yeah.. Media consumption is a big thing.
We want good speakers!

delicate stream
#

I feel like that isn't accurate...

blissful roost
#

31 minutes? lol

#

Doubt

delicate stream
#

Mostly the unlock count

#

I've only been up for like 3 hours and mostly on desktop

#

Meanwhile, on my iPhone

delicate stream
#

lol

blissful roost
#

Always bugs me, when I look at my old phones..

#

I've still got the LG P970 (Optimus Black).

#

The screen res is so bad. 😛

delicate stream
#

I don't know where anything other than my 6P is, and that's still 1440p -- just a little shorter screen than the 2 XL

blissful roost
#

Oohhh

#

Apparently my new case needed to be customised.

delicate stream
#

There are buttons, so I probably could do that. Have it change automatically every hour or something...

dusty citrus
#

the ical format is nicely sorted so doing a binary search on it the data for whatever happens this week works great.

#

I neglected to do a cold pull after switching from PETG to PLA and the nozzle started clogging mid-print

I'm trying to decide if a wiki or a traditional manual is best for my project. Are wikis easier for a layperson to maintain than a LaTeX document?

Ok cool I'll start with a wiki and then do a traditional manual too if it's needed. Can you recommend a specific wiki solution?
