I generally support the idea behind using paper straws, but I just wish Bk would save some plastic ones for their frozen drinks
Is the diffusion accomplished with a very thin print layer?
That's so cool!!!
This and White filament actually doesn’t block all that much light
I’m planning on putting the files up on my blog
Learn how to make a variety of cool projects and new products from ODT!
Ah should have guessed the website
Lol
What are "bindings" in this context?
"PyQt is a set of Python bindings for The Qt Company's Qt application framework and runs on all platforms supported by Qt including Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS and Android. PyQt6 supports Qt v6, PyQt5 supports Qt v5 and PyQt4 supports Qt v4. "
"Bindings" means an API for a particular language or environment, basically. The hooks so that you can call Qt library functions from a Python app.
Ahh ok cool
(That's because Qt itself is probably written in another language.)
That was my next question
Ok, what should I google to learn about how an application can be written in one language but called by another?
Well, there is a standard binary interface for libraries on many OSes, so you can call a function in it no matter how it was written, assuming it's been compiled to machine code. Interpreted languages like Python get a little trickier, so they generally need some cross-language support as part of the interpreter. In Python, for example, there's https://docs.python.org/3/library/ctypes.html
You can also go the other direction, accessing Python objects from within C++ code: https://docs.python.org/3/extending/extending.html
I wonder if in the future we'll have machine vision radars in our cars to be able to tell how fast someone is going. No more "wow that guy was going fast!" Because it will just show up on your HUD
I think Tesla has something like that
I didn't notice my friend's car telling how fast other cars were going but it did recognize them
Yeah cars, people, traffic lights
It was pretty neat
Just saw a video of a 3d printed HDMI-garden hose adapter. They plugged a cable into a laptop and turned on the hose on the other end. Water came leaking out of the keyboard and screen.
watching stargate shows again but starting with universe, then atlantis, then sg1
my fav peeps are; christopher judge, michael shanks, david hewlett, amanda tapping, jason momoa
ive seen sg1 too many times to start with it
if I said how I really felt about SGUniverse, eyes would bleed
you dont like drama?
I like good scifi
I think my main issue is that it strung me along too long :-)
SGU was utterly dreadful and should have been killed off during the pitch.
the first few lines of a pitch for it actually sounds pretty awesome to me, but, sadness happened
Yeeeeeeahhhh
My lab definitely needs a wire EDM cutter
Probably gonna have to build it but it looks pretty simple
Kind of like the stranger that waves back from the mirror every morning
That is, had to build it myself and looks pretty simple
This is turning out amazing! Well done! What's it running?
Just the Adafruit neopixel Arduino code. Modified with some checks for btn presses to get out of looped animation
I’m going to iterate on it and design a custom PCB for it with level shifting to do circuitpython
Neat!
Just curious, does Adafruit manufacture their PCBs in house?
or they're made by third party providers
I'm guessing OSHPARK or somewhere
The pink PCB they are doing came from PCBWay if I remember right
IDK
They order prototypes from OshPark
Yes, that one does
Some
OSHPark for proto runs, other houses for full runs.
I order protos from JLCPCB
Aha
I think i'll try PCBWay next time
I'll see
I order protos from JDBPCB back in China, they're pretty good
literally just included a ":3" in a teams message to my boss, and deleted it at lightspeed
depending on the boss this could not be an issue.
Should really have better impulse control on my typing quirks lmao
oh, it's a general cutesy emoticon commonly used by furries to add a friendly tone to a message
🥰
actually idk, they suggested DnD as a teambuilding activity once, so I think they'd actually be very welcoming to it
I have a pet theory that many allergies and immune system issues will be fixable when we have a better understanding of, and can manipulate gut flora. I hope I'm right because I'm pretty atopic
I knew uwu, I would definitely avoid sending that to your boss haha, too familiar

It's better than doge
LOL
I would send doge to bosses I've had in the past, my current one would probably just make sure we have good mental health coverage in our healthcare plan
which we don't of course but that's neither here nor there
I pronounce it may may ironically but I'm trying to stop because irony is too thick in daily discourse these days
Fresh boards about to solder
hehe
Noice
I recognize the UART part number.
If I manage to frame in all 3 windows today, I'll be done with pretty much all of the framing on the lab and enough of it to get all the insulation installed
Things are coming along!
Theres doors too!
And during initial use, the walkway between sections will be blocked but once my parents don't need the other side for storage we will be adding a door between
So I can have a bit more storage room
And yes it's a mess but my room is much better hehe
Yay!!
spaceX crew-3 launch stream is up
The part number on that PCB
YM2149 is Yamaha's version of AY-3-8910 sound chip
The AY-3-8910 is a 3-voice programmable sound generator (PSG) designed by General Instrument in 1978, initially for use with their 16-bit CP1610 or one of the PIC1650 series of 8-bit microcomputers. The AY-3-8910 and its variants were used in many arcade games—Konami's Gyruss contains five—and pinball machines as well as being the sound chip in ...
Oh, I was thinking the AY-5-1013 UART, oops
Oh. Sorry -

I was promised it would be warm today, who can I go to to complain?
reminds me of a kid I "knew" when I was lucky enough to take a sailing class as a child. One of the other kids was the son of a lawyer and threatened to have his dad sue the instructors for bad weather.
The look on their faces has stayed with me for years
like many things, nothing can be 100% predicted
except the next COD release being lackluster. that's pretty much guaranteed
we at least got half life alyx. I can't play that though, VR makes me sick
I do not have anything that can play it
same, but that's b/c the nausea
I’m curious why you get sick? Do you know if it’s a frame rate or IPD thing or something?
no idea, but I've tried both the original dev kit version of the occulus and the latest from facebook (a friend owns it) and both made me sick
not like truly ill, but needing to stop
Hm, well FWIW those are both… well below state of the art in comfort and accessibility. Cheap though.
I remember the oculus dev kit being a nauseating blur so you’re far from alone there
hmm what would you recommend? Projects are taking a lot of my money right now but I'd consider one in the future, if I can return it if it makes me sick
I have a https://www.valvesoftware.com/en/index and can recommend it wholeheartedly.
Oh no I might be a bot...somehow I knew this
I need to upgrade my PC first, it's running old chips. But I have to wait for covid related issues to stop bringing up prices
120 (or even 144) Hz display, finely adjustable IPD, relatively high FOV, and designed to be in for hours at a time.
what resolution?
dual 1440x1600 displays
I got super excited again about my 6502 laptop today... Found all the parts and I really can't wait for the lab to be ready so I can lay everything out and still have desk space
Compare this to the Quest 2, which is admittedly 1/3 the price and can operate wirelessly, but has lower refresh rates, worse positional tracking, only 3 IPD settings, and seems designed in terms of comfort for 15 minute sessions. I found it immediately uncomfortable.
Plus there’s the whole “hardware from Facebook covered in cameras and microphones” angle on anything from Oculus.
I finally got my eeproms I needed for my Apple 1 replica so I get to try things out this weekend
FWIW it doesn’t need top-of-the-line to work well. May I ask your machine’s specs?
Here is what it looks like
IIRC a ryzen 2700 (? don't hold me to that, I'm at work and can't check) and an Nvidia 760. 36 GB DDR4 RAM It works fine for playing satisfactory with my buddy.
don't hold me to the graphics card either, it's been a while since I installed it
ahh sastifactory
such a good game
kibitz comes to mind
is that another game or a way of spelling kibbutz?
look on YouTube for ImKibitz
Fair enough. Well RAM won’t be a problem, but yeah, the CPU and GPU sound a bit long in the tooth. They do have a benchmark that’ll give you a better sense than guessing: https://store.steampowered.com/app/1070910/Are_you_ready_for_Valve_Index/ or if you want more detail https://store.steampowered.com/app/323910/SteamVR_Performance_Test/

yeah I need to upgrade my CPU badly, but that likely requires updating my MOBO and it's whole thing
Especially difficult these days even if one does have the money
yeah I don't unfortunately have 2000 dollars laying around
Which, with prices going the way they are, one might not
you could do a upgrade for about 475 for board+cpu Gigabyte B550 + Ryzen 3600X
that is actually CAD
What is it in Fusion360 /s
lol CAD = Canadian moola vs USD
Yes, I don’t remember which way the ratio cuts ATM though
at the moment 1 CAD is about .80 cents USD
I keep meaning to visit canada again
I loved it when I was there last
Really lovely people by and large. Every society has its stinkers in it but Canada is pretty darn nice
a Gigabyte B550M AORUS PRO-P is 127 USD and a Ryzen 5600X is 299 USD
on amazon
interesting, maybe I can upgrade sooner than I thought
I think so
the kicker is the video card that is a utter pain at the moment
970 might actually do it
but everything else is doable
That seems higher than usual, heh.
yes our CAD loony seems to have climbed
oof, really? I didn't know it was usually that bad
(I'm a USian temporarily living in Canada. So I'm aware of it.)
Wasn’t it 0.63USD —> 1CAD a month or two ago?
yeah just when I finally got my 3080ti
No, that was the start of COVID. I have been able to travel for a while now. 😄
I thought it was really bad just a few months ago
cry sooo much money
hey at least you got one
MicroCenter near me still has signs that amount to "here is when the truck shows up if you want to try your luck"
yeah all thoses people who had orders in that truck that got hijacked
oh it's still missing?
yep
wow I wonder if it's an inside job then
EVGA has put out some stern warnings on trying to register the cards
I can't imagine those trucks aren't filled to the brim with trackers
hey up here in Calgary we had lumber trucks hijacked this summer
imagine a 2x4 going for 40$ CAD per piece
normally they go for 2-4$
It's been pretty bonkers.
yeah bulders having to hire guards for house building sites since they could come back in the morning and all thebuilding supplies were stolen in the middle of the night
I did not hear that the drivers of the stolen semi's of lumber were ever caught but the loads were recoverd
for reference here's what I get
Canada also had a multi million dollar maple syrup heist
you can see that relative to when the test was made, I am using hardware from the future
I think the mob was theorized to be involved
yeah and they took a year to do it and no caught on until a inspector nearly fell of some barrels that were not full
Oh they caught all the people and no mob but it was very funny how they did it
they put millions of dollars of maple in a warehouse with a single camera and 2 guards, the guards were bribed to look the other way and they would roll a truck in take the barrels and bring them back filled with pond water, but after they realized it was so easy they just put empty barrels back
that is what tipped off the inspector when he nearly fell off a stack of empty barrels
wow
most of the maple was shipped to the east coast and sold on the grey very grey market so most of it was never recovered
just... "maple syrup heist" is SO Canadian. It would not have even occurred to me that it might be heisted.
now I just want pancakes. I did this to myself
I did that to myself and boneless wings today
ooof
I kept watching a youtuber's skits where the joke is that boneless wings are delicious. I held out for a few days. But then... today happened.
Gosh… private insurance is ✨ amazing ✨
What'd they do this time?
My kids need antibiotics and insurance won’t cover them and I don’t have $300 to pay for them :/
300 dollars for antibiotics is criminal
Which antibiotic?
Amoxicillin
dude
that's like an OG antibiotic. Like they gave that to soldiers in korea. That should not cost 300 dollars. yeesh
oof
You could try calling the pharmacy and asking to pay without insurance.
goodrx might help
Can’t, because we have insurance we don’t qualify for a discount
Wife already asked
Tractor supply company?
yeah fishmox is an option
Dosage and suspension isn’t the same and my kids are young
a not not dangerous option though
5 and 3. My daughter also has a heart defect so no backwoods pharmacy
yeah can't do that
if it helps, I had a heart defect as a kid and I live a relatively normal life now
My daughter will live a great life, I’m confident
She has a bicuspid aortic valve
But it doesn’t seem to slow her down
that's great
I had a hole in between my atriums
my parents had really good state insurance at the time so it was mostly paid for
We’re trying to get disability Medicaid for my daughter
But it’s a long and arduous process
Totally
That's bonkers. I've gone to a new pharmacy and simply given them the GoodRx info instead of my insurance info... It's not great, but sometimes it was the only option.
Incredibly so.
We have insurance on file so.. kind of stuck..
Ah, I'm sorry to hear that.
And now there’s something wrong with my daughters prescription with insurance 😔
US insurance is such a scam
I know. I understand entirely.
I just signed up for life insurance. It's not much but it should cover my "sea borne funeral pyre" needs
this my 3rd time watching stargate universe and im on 6th episode so far, honestly like this show more now then the first time i watched them all... So much character stuff i didnt notice first time of watch. I think i like rush more then young. IDK they are both kinda horrible people for different reasons
Yeah, you don't want to skimp on the quality of the flaming-arrow archer. The low bidders will need half a dozen shots, and that's just an embarrassment for everyone attending. 😉
EdmureTully.gif
@blissful roost why do you hate the show so much? there is a bit missing in it that SG1 and atlantis had, im not sure what it is though...
im just trying to give it some current love so maybe a new show will be made
That would be nice
origins was crap, i cant believe i helped pay for that development... i got a T shirt and watched it while it was being made on the website they had
It was fundamentally boring.
I wouldn't say it is boring, but there are some places im like SKIP but i dont really skip
I am having so many adafruit toys right now
I think it's far more interesting to watch my kids while I'm at the office. lol
The Raspberry Pi foundation is opening a pop-up store in London for the 26th-27th, so I think I'll swing by and check it out. 🙂
I only need 1 kidney, I can fly to London
You can meet me.. and this "Upton" guy.
that's my reply
kids can be very entertaining, omg the dump stuff they sometimes do

Mine are just eating and sleeping.. which is pretty much their thing. 😛
The dumbest thing Beau does, is try to clean his sister's feet.. She hates that. 😄
I guess if I have to get a dog walker (anticipating some long work days), I should probably get a doorbell camera and a fancy lockbox huh
Dang it I had mostly avoided IoTing my house
Just make a robotic dog walker
My dog needs serious supervision
She has a bite history
Only once but one is too many
With an auto dispensing sky crane for treats to serve as motivation
With appropriate guards on the props of course
I've considered one of those pet cameras that dispenses treats but right now my only IoT device is my sous vide stick
And multi-orientation takeoff / self- righting tech
Eh, details
Finally got a bedroom TV for cheap— it’s a weird placement, but my layout maximizes my VR playspace
My Grandad used to put a spoonful of gunpowder into his tea every morning. He said it was a very old remedy to help him live longer, and it worked: he lived to the ripe old age of 97.
He left a widow, two children, 14 grandchildren and a 50 foot crater where the crematorium used to be.
Good thing your grandfather wasn't a smoker.
Sleeping hard, but also coughing all night. Don’t remember coughing, don’t remember getting up to use the bathroom or coughing my lungs out while doing that. All the things my wife said I did last night but don’t remember. But it explains why my throat hurts and I’m so tired
take care...
Morning
I kind of want to make a point to point wired / stacked chip computer with no substrate
Just for the hilarity of it
Obviously something in the 1MHz range
I'm thinking I may have figured out what to do with the 6507 since I decided to use the full 6502 for the laptop design
And I found a 2k SRAM chip
Just need to find a good NV memory solution for the boot code
Might see if I can get one of my UVEPROMs to work for that but I don't think my blacklight is the right wavelength
(for erasure)
Sometimes you can just leave them in the sun for a while
General project help (when no more specific group exists) happens in #help-with-projects .
Just realized my amazon fire stick supports my airpods
absolute godsend for watching shows & not waking people up
@late fulcrum My supervisor found the Alpha machine, did not go out yet.
not really sure if it was a XP1000 but did have "Digital" on top and looked similar.
Remember, with bodge wires and an insane amount of luck you too can design PCBs like me. Ka-chow!
In this case my dumb brain swapped Reset and Bootsel on this ESP32-S2 board 😛
So remove pull up on boot button and add pull up and smoothing capacitor to reset
Also, be sure to be sure of your design otherwise buttons might melt a little 😬
still cleaner than most of my PCB designs to date
It’s an odd mistake for me to make considering I’ve made successful ESP32-s2 boards before
You are Oak Dev Tech?
Oui
I've decided I'm going to make a computer whose only non-chip-pin connections will be bodges.
That is, stacks of chips with bodges between
No board
Just for the novelty
I'll probably do video as just a basic controller off a slightly overclocked ATMega chip
With a clock frequency chosen to make interrupt timing line up with the video signal timing
Something like 20MHz for a pseudo 800x600@60Hz signal but with chunky pixels
So probably end up being a max of 200x150
challenge is getting a ATMega nowadays
I found an ATMega328p with mangled but not broken pins
I'm thinking I can use its IO for the CPU to address its onboard memory using some kind of interrupt routine for frame buffering since the CPU will only be operating at 1 MHz
Then it just addresses it like a RAM chip and then the MCU bangs out the graphics signal
Probably monochrome but I want it to do VGA because I don't have anything with composite input at the moment
Hmm maybe not monochrome I'll have to figure out how I'm doing the IO buffering then I'll see how many pins I have left over, may need a few latches and a common data bus, then I can go up to whatever color depth the system has speed for if I use the same 8 bit bus and a transceiver for pushing data to the MCU as for setting the pixel latches
Then if I have 3 pixel latches and a return value latch for when the MCU reads out the 0th address within the MCU controlled address block for future coprocessor expansion via software it only needs 2 address bits for the latches
Or better, use that latch to hold the output when the CPU is requesting any data from the MCU so it can set things up, then move onto its next task
Anyway I have the RAM chip, I have the flash chip I want to use which will be able to contain up to 128 software swappable ROM banks, and I have my concept for graphical output
May even add another MCU as a coprocessor / IO expander...
Okay I'm going back on what I said... I'm using El Pico Yolo for video and some IO, I'm using the Pico for sound synthesis and the remaining IO
And since the CPU is already mounted to a board and I'm not confident it will survive another removal, there will be 2 boards in the design. The CPU board and the Pico
But there's quite a bit I can pack onto the CPU board especially with chip stacking... May not even need to have floating chips
My project which I've spent months on learning a ton is working. I'm nearly in tears
Couldn't have done it without the kind folks here, shout out to community helpers (don't want to tag them but know your hard work is seen)
I will be making a donation to my local humane society in thanks
Nice work @lusty fossil
It was a group effort, truly
Always 🎉
Everything I’ve made is a reflection of what I’ve learned in this community 🙂
I'll always use adafruit or adafruit thru digikey as my primary source for parts and such.
Thanks for sharing your gratitude @lusty fossil 🤗
Same
I'm so full of gratitude lol idk what to do with it.
There's a guy living on the street near me with a dog. Maybe I'll buy them dinner tonight
And many of the things I didn't make (such as a custom IMU) are also a reflection of what I've learned here 😆
Oh yeah I got lots of good advice on what not to do
I learned how sophisticated imus are from EdKeyes and then decided not to make one because it would be too hard to test. Since then, I have told other people about imus and gotten them interested
Congrats!!!!
This is a lovely thing to do 😊
Lots of dogs and cats in my shelter right now. I'd adopt more but my baby doesn't like other dogs in her space
My cat would seemingly rather be an only-kitty. But when I'm home in the US, there's two more to deal with. This one spends a lot of time alone in my bedroom when home. But she's happy to sleep under a blanket and loudly let you know when she's ready to be let out.
Awww sweeties
She's also 17 years old. So she gets what she wants. 😄
My financial goals can be summed up as "afford adoption of an inadvisable amount of animals"
huh, atoms are larger than I thought
Caesium atoms are 0.5nm, transistor sizes are reaching 5nm
I can see how there is a limit
IBM reportedly has 2nm process they’ve proven
And Intel created a sort of ladder transistor which allows for 2nm and 3nm transistor sizes
more efficient computing I find important
2008 x86 CPU can do almost everything I need it to do
It’s called ribbonFET
Better link: https://youtu.be/Rt-7c9Wgnds
After pioneering FinFETs in 2011, we’re introducing a whole new transistor architecture built on stackable nanoribbons we’re calling RibbonFET. RibbonFET transistors feature ribbon-shaped channels surrounded by the gate, which ultimately leads to better performance in a smaller footprint.
Delivering power and signal to transistors the traditio...
The various nanometer claims at this point are just marketing: the old way of measuring transistors has little validity for current processes.
Yay!
Interesting! Any intro references you know of for this?
Here's one useful writeup: https://www.hpcwire.com/2020/06/01/10nm-7nm-5nm-should-the-chip-nanometer-metric-be-replaced/
Yeah, it’s one thing to measure the gate size vs the actual transistor
500 on the pihole blacklist, I remember hearing that "they (advertisers, govt, etc.) are out to get you on the internet", I am starting to believe that more.
Just won two medals, neat
1st for Government and Geography, 2nd for current events
At a conference and they quizzed us over some stuff
Congrats!
nice!
what competition was it?
Just some quizzes
oh, like wire wrap?
A little less elegant than that
But I actually realized the CPU I want to use is already on some phenolic proto board and may not survive another removal... Also I really want a Pico in this and am therefore compromising with the inclusion of a total of 2 boards
So I'm going to try and cram as much of it into a tiny proto board as I can
In stacks of chips arranged cleverly to use minimal space and wiring
I recall doing the History Bowl in elementary school
And History Fair which was similar to science fair
Oh, I also did the Science Bowl too
I got third place with my team
Which hilariously enough, watching “How it’s made” actually answered like three questions that came up the next day
On of them was what part of a plant is used in absorbing materials like those used in diapers
The answer was cellulose
Reminds me of the time we had a geography bee. I only studied the capital of Iceland. That was the winning question
Yup
There it is
It was interesting to learn that the first k makes a weird sound with that j
Like, it doesn’t necessarily sound how it is spelled
Yeah their language (Icelandish?) is super interesting
Yeah
I def want to go there
Rake ha Vick
Latvia is first on the list though
Cheap for Europe and lots of pretty stuff to see
I have a friend in Latvia that I’ve wanted to meet in person for years now
If you watch Brooklyn 99, Boyles adopted son is Latvian. Got me to Google the place
Yeah, Riga is super pretty
I want to stop there after visiting the land of my most dominant heritage, Finland
Finland is neat.
I went there as part of a trip with an orchestra I was in. Really cool
I mostly want to meet those still practicing traditional Saami practices
I used to work for a company that did international shipping forms. This was before Unicode was common, and I ended up doing some interesting character encoding to properly render some of the characters Latvian uses.
They had a really tasty pork dish. Can't remember what it's called though
My mom’s side comes from the Finnish Saami people
So it’s kind of nice to know I’m not 100% white boy but probably at least 1/4 indigenous
Cool!
Yeah
My not related to me Godmother is native American so I got to learn about cool stuff
Saami experienced and continue to experience a lot of what black Americans go through
Been to a handful of powows
And a lot of what native Americans experienced
But luckily the Saami have had a lot of success getting mainstream movies to portray Saami correctly in filmography. At least in the last 5-6 years
The Northoldra people in Frozen 2 were modeled after the Saami with Saami leaders helping make sure the portrayals were accurate and respectful
The Netflix animated Christmas movie Klaus had Saami people in it too 🙂 including their language which is pretty big considering it was banned from being taught it schools in Finland, Sweden, and Norway until very recently
Back when educational content was educational
Re:
I still have no idea how a change of nick on a completely unrelated server ended up applying here too but eh, it's the perfect place to have done so
I wonder if I could write an amputator bot to post non AMP links, like exists on reddit
Probably wouldn't be allowed
Was about to share a link lol
Related: I dislike Apple News
Eh, apple news is better than amp and better than Google news but still not that great in terms of curation
I would prefer to receive direct links to the publisher, ideally with URLs that show something about the title. But at least, something that is not a tracker for a third party
They are stealing information I have not volunteered to give them
I am not speaking to content at all, just the medium
Well, I’d argue that Apple steals far less than a standard news webpage
Digital bill of rights was needed 10 years ago
I wish there were a way to pay for an online news subscription but not have them track the articles I read.
Well, they want to curate content to you that they think you’ll find interesting
That is not the whole story
I don’t necessarily think there is harm in that so long as it doesn’t create an echo chamber
No, it’s never the whole story
Of course apple is going to steer you to news stories that net them the best revenue outcomes
But in any case, I think even if that were their only motive, I think it should be required that they provide the ability to opt out
Also, selling aggregated version of the engagement data to either third parties or other teams within apple
I mean, you can’t opt out of Google tracking, Facebook tracking, etc…
Apples data is far more “bland” than Facebook/Google though
You can opt out of some, browser-block some, and still more opt-outability and accountability is needed
Sure
Apple does try to at least make your data less targeted
For instance they don’t sell location data
Yes, I think apple is the best of the big players, and I hope apple news is not harbinger of the end of that
Google sells your location data to retailers to suggest products based on how long you stood in a particular aisle
It’s.. really creepy
Especially if you have retailer apps on your phone
I want to be able to tell Google maps to not spend CPU cycles fetching a full page of ads every time I arrive at my destination. Just keep showing the map.
Target geofences you and aggregates your data with Facebook pixels (which are harder and harder to block) to also target ads
My phone slows to a crawl.
It’s nuts
Curious why Facebook pixels are harder to block than ordinary pixels?
I’m not sure
But they’ve been making them to try and circumvent cross site tracking
Apparently they are pretty successful
You mean circumvent browser-blocking of cross site tracking?
Not as successful as before cross site tracking blocks but still getting better
Yes browser cross site tracking
They apparently also know how to get around the apple required tracking consent
Idek how they would do that but they have probably invested $384474225523 in lobbying for it so...
Facebook built their whole business on selling you to businesses
Unfortunately small businesses fell for it as the only means to boost your business
Right but I hope real people win in the battle of attention economy versus real people
I subscribe to newspapers, but rarely use the app or log in to the website, I'll go through contortions to read the articles in a more anonymous way (like Reader View in Safari if there's a paywall, or sometimes hitting it via a search engine)
Me too
This used to work for WSJ
But I haven’t been able to do that lately
If I had a business I wouldn't be on Facebook, personally. I wouldn't want to waste an employee's or my time dealing with the Hoi poloi
I get email news too, but never click through
and each publisher has a separate email address for me
I mostly use apple news because I get it in my apple one subscription
Occasionally I’ll read articles in browser
I do like News for casual news surfing, it's easy enough to get a clean browser link
My issue with apple news is I want Top Stories in my widget and it won’t let me
hm, dunno, I don't do widgets. But I do regularly clear all history in News, and reset the advertising id for news/stocks
(to reduce both filter bubble and tracking)
The apartment next to me is used as a second property by the owners, so it's nearly always vacant. My dog is used to this and gets very upset when someone finally shows up and has the audacity to use their property
I'm just thankful it isn't an airbnb
hahaha
There's a good pic of her cute mug in #pet-photos atm
sit, ubu, sit
Ha. My dad used to say that to me lol
The ad targeting is just broken for me. I get ads for jewelry and cars I would never buy, and sketchy bitcoin sites I'd never use.
I get pretty well targeted ads. One of these days I'm gonna sit down and learn how to disconnect my identity from these things
I never get crypto related ads
I also get lots of ads for medical treatments and medication for conditions no one in my family has lol
“Highly targeted advertisements”
I'm logged into my buddy's hulu and he gets a lot of ads for a medical condition I'm pretty sure he doesn't have.
For instance
Has your front fallen off recently? Take ship-floaters pills
Lol
It creeps me out that everyone who sends me spam emails seems to know my email address
Yeahhh
(originally replied to wrong msg)
All good
I've learned all sorts of real people's names that could plausibly be abbreviated as my email address
My favorite junk emails are ones that basically just use my email but with the domain truncated
the last junk email I got was June 9th
I have a junk email I used for non-important accounts
one of my friends, whenever he provides his email to create an acct on some site, adds '+xxxx', replacing xxxx' by random number:
johndoe+1234@gmail.com
as is well known, Gmail ignores this addition
I have (checks) >1000 email addresses by now, no two entities get the same one, and if one gets spam, it gets deleted
but this way, when he gets a junk email, he knows which site sold him out
yes!
1000 email addresses?
how do you manage?
I guess all are forwarded to same inbox?
to a couple of inboxes, yeah... they are mostly at a bunch of my domains, but now Apple has make-as-you-need hide my email addresses, so that's handy too
years back, I had some gmail et al addresses that were set to forward, but nothing much comes through those anymore, there may well be tons of spam in those junk folders but I rarely if ever log in so I don't know
I think some sites look for this and ignore it, and would index johndoe+1234@gmail.com as johndoe@gmail.com
I do appreciate sites that respect it though
More parts!
Finished with white & grey, now doing the matte aqua stuff
Took me a good two days to start getting successful prints with the aqua stuff, it CONSTANTLY wants to clog & jam
i really want to hear a dubstep remix of ladyada's new song
Definitely not me.
I’m still at the conference and someone with the name “Wanna see a fight” keeps trying to airdrop stuff to me
Why do people do this
Fair
Also i found a calculator for finding heat index temperature (what the temperature feels like) and decided to put in the average summer temperature and humidity for where i live
For reference the hottest day ever recorded in the united states ranks in at 127 degrees on the index
136℉ air temperature? How....
Thats in death valley
Was like 134 or 136 that day
Meanwhile where i live, on the complete opposite side of the country, it hits around 90 degrees on average in july but with 70-80% humidity most of the time
And putting in the average values for July you get this for the average
This is just one of the worse days, though it’s not the worst possible relative temperature that can be reached
Finally, a something-verse I can get behind
Some said an open-world experience this immersive wasn’t possible. But it’s already here. And you don’t even need silly VR headsets.

Yes...
Firefox
Firefox isn’t all that great at it
Safari is actually the best for blocking cross site tracking
I unfortunately am still using Chrome for some things, but Firefox for the most part
I can't use Safari on a Windoze computer, can I
Opera broke or slowed down most sites so much that I completely uninstalled Opera
No offence to you, if you were the one who got in the magazine, but I feel like the article in the new Make: magazine for a Ducky-Pad completely, shamelessly ripped off Adafruit's Macropad, and then gave no reference or links to Adafruit's one whatsoever.
Furthermore, they were selling it on Tindie, and didn't give any reference to the original creators. I don't know how Adafruit's licensing works, and I know it's open source, which is a great thing, but it just seems like the magazine article author just really should have done the right thing and linked or made a reference to Adafruit's design as well as his own.
Sorry for venting XD
Which article? I was under the impression that the DuckyPad predated the Adafruit Macropad in its own independent development.
The MacroPad dropped Summer 2021, but I believe the DuckyPad was a couple months before...
Yeah, actually it looks like the original duckypad was first prototyped in 2017, and crowdfunding began in 2019. They're also very different devices in everything outside of keys and display.
I know it feels like Adafruit basically invented the macropad when it came out, but their breakthrough wasn't the Macropad with an OLED display. It was the RP2040 and CircuitPython parts that made it stand out as an affordable high-quality entry-level macropad.
If anything Adafruit drew inspiration from the DuckyPad and other similar devices that started becoming increasingly popular through the late 2010s.
A few of my boards made it into Make 🙂
Hmm. I guess it just looks so similar to it
It hasn’t per-say led to any sales but the exposure is cool 🙂
Heh
Do you ever like
Remember something you did and you're like "ohhhh yeeeeaah, that was a thing!"?
I just remembered I printed one of the set pieces in The Angry Astronaut's background hehe
I really wish the slow apocalypse hadn't started right when I was trying to make a business out of it and I was super unsure about shipping out packages that potentially had viruses on it (or that I might be blamed for someone getting sick from elsewhere) that could survive 3 days outside of a host, plenty of time to survive shipping, and make me responsible for something terrible or be falsely accuse and have no way to prove it wasn't me. And adding 3 days to shipping time is a good way to kill a startup
So I just dropped the project
hehe

I started my current job last year, right before lockdowns..
I spent 4 weeks at the office with nothing to do, then 7 months of WFH.. getting paid full wage for 30 minutes of work per month.
developing while in pajamas is something different
What do you do during those 30 minutes?
If you don't mind me asking
Receive list of Microsoft product updates, filter down to only the products we use, remove duplicates, send to amended list to colleague.
30 minutes was the slow time. 😛
Wow. And they pay you a full-time salary?
Yarp.
You must be really charismatic
Hahahahaa
I lucked out.. a few others were on furlough.
Shame it only lasted 7 months.. I could have stuck that out for a long while. 😛
Yeah, though the pandemic situation improving has its upsides too
Not for me, as they want to shift me back over to the other office.
Ugh… I like NDA in that they help protect projects in early development but also hate them because I really want to share what I’ve been working on 😒
Maybe I can share after the product launches
It’s really cool and is going to be really big for our customers when we launch. But probably won’t reveal an MVP until May/June next year
oak dev iirc
Learn how to make a variety of cool projects and new products from ODT!
This it?
That’s my personal company, this product I’m developing is with another startup
I see
At the moment
Huh interesting
Interesting
I'll be waiting
I’d rather develop it open source
But I understand why we are keeping the development under tight wraps

I end up open-sourcing my hardware (if possible, MediaCow Touch 1 was made from a bunch of wood laying around, a mess of wires, hot glue and a BPI-M64, not much to open),
Yup lol
Lol
Anything with Oak Dev I try to do open source
It is kind of sucky that so many companies will use open source and not contribute back
Typically violating the license...
I generally avoid Allwinner now
Some companies even violate the license by building products around open source software without releasing their own changes or source code.
Indeed
yeah. wonder if something will come to be on that
im utterly bemused on why they removed labels, links etc
I mean, its not even on way. id leave it be
we will see.
But there have been examples of successful litigation which forced companies using GPL'ed code to open their own - I don't remember details, though
yeah i recall a coupke but not much details lol
Quick question:
Can an 8ga butt splice crimp fit 2 12ga stranded wire in one end?
I need to go from 2 12ga stranded wire to 1 12ga wire for my Yaesu FT-991 power wire. The radio power port splits off into two ground and two positive wires.
@ me when you reply, please
It is! 😁
I downloaded it on D+ yesterday, but I've already seen it at the cinema.
Theoretically it should, purely by cross-sectional area. Rule of thumb is cross sectional area is halved every 3AWG, and diameter is halved every 6AWG.
Keep in mind, however, that to fit a double crimp into certain terminals, you may end up having to expose a bit more wire than you would otherwise need for a standard crimp.
Cool. I wasn't aware of that rule of thumb
Thank you, Hem
I need moar nerd stickers! Lol
Yeah
I've got a Hackster.io and multiple Xilinx stickers on my laptop
😄
Lol
Do you ever think about how lemons, limes, and oranges are really just the same fruit
anyone ever seen a DIP chip installed upside down and surface mount?
I figured out another solution for stacking chips with a socket on top
this is 2k of SRAM and a socket with 256k of parallel flash
only wire they don't always receive the same signal on is chip select and only two signals that are common didn't line up
next step, add the banking circuitry, which is a transparent latch and a PLA
the PLA will get the upper 9 bits of address to determine whether it should select various chips
that way I can have strange memory alignment if I really want to
but the real purpose is so I can have several hardware select addresses
Also hallo not dead just ahhhhh with work
New job stuffs
300 Chromebooks need updating
And/or replacing
I was at work really late last night XD inventory fun
are youbuilding a Chromebook farm, too???
Lol, I work in a school
thought so...
Current project outside of updating is trying to get Chromium OS running on EoL Chromebooks
Or force installing newer Chrome OS
Oh, I got my ADABOX! I got the bug DX trade, anyone?!
I want to trade for dragon or cat XD
lol i don't have any lol
You should buy some to trade with me :P
i have no money
unfortunately
had to spend $100 to run more cat6 cable for my wife's job she starts soon
Oof
I needed two cables for my powerline adapters...
Took two from work. 😁
had to get a cheap $20 netgear 8 port switch because the 16 port PoE switch from Ubiquiti is out of stock and i don't want to pay 3x as much from a scalper
I have a Ubiquiti Dream Machine Pro, and I'm going to be adding cameras to my setup here in the next few months when i have a little more expendable income. So the managed PoE switch would have integrated nicely for that.
I need to figure out the best value replacement for 13 Uniquiti APs at work
More Ubiquiti APs
Why are you replacing the APs?
@delicate stream do you know kind of Ubiquiti APs are being used currently?
And is there other Ubiquiti network appliances being used with them?

They're out of support, and we're having some issues with smart switching not working and stuff. I think they're UAP-LR -- some of the earliest models
Oh gotcha, I’d just replace with the newer LR models
I was looking at... I think it was the U6-LR?
These? https://store.ui.com/collections/unifi-network-wireless/products/unifi-6-long-range-access-point
Enterprise-grade WiFi 6 access point with 4X4 MIMO and OFDMA functionality.
The Access Point WiFi 6 Long-range (U6 LR) is a high-performance access point that brings powerful, four-stream WiFi 6 coverage to enterprise networks. The U6 LR can reach an aggregate throughput rate up to 3 Gbps with its 5 GHz (4x4 MU-MIMO and OFDMA) and 2.4 GHz (4x4 ...
ye
That's a bonus. Most devices are still older and only 2.4GHz right now
I mostly was looking at those for range and number of clients
yeah. you have to set server in order to use it
A lot of the clients don't have 5GHz. lol
This reads weird lol I’m not sure what you mean
unifi have a server you can set in order to manager aps and such
Oh, yea I know that bit
It’s not really a server more than a control software
You can install it on any windows computer without having to buy Unifi controller equipment
There’s even a Linux distro if you want to run headless
yeah its bit of annoyance lol since phone app you cant set wpa3
only via such manager software that you can do it
You mean phones not being able to use Wpa3 on phones?
I can set WPA3 from the Unifi app on my iPhone but I don’t think any devices in my network support WPA3 yet
no
phone app to configure ap
sorry very tired cant really clearly explain stuff lol
odd. standalone config screen?
ok
Gooooooood morning!
you were just in time for that message here in pacific time, came in at 11:59
good pre-night!
Good <time of day> to you <appropriate title>
Sir/Madam/pleasant and kind terrestrial/other distinguished formal title
Don’t drop the “l” on pleasant or you might see a peasant
Which makes me wonder if Pleasant was used to describe peasants who cleaned up nicely?
Etymology is interesting
Spelled it wrong 😆
at least you didn't "spelt" it wrong, that's a bread making mistake
Bugs vs Word Origins
Breader spelt it rye(T)
It’s knot a want, but a knead
😆
Has everyone here seen Shang-Chi?
Yup
Great movie
I love the cameo from Iron Man 3. (Won’t say who for those who haven’t seen it)
But overall, I really loved the movie
I said last night and will say it again; it was a very refreshing change of pace from other marvel movies
is it up on D+?
Yeah
I watched it for the first time last night
Going to watch Jungle Train tonight
I'll have to watch again. I gotta watch Dune again first, cold medicine led me to falling asleep in the theatre!

I haven’t seen dune yet
I can recommend the first bit
I wish I have the ability to go to the theatre but childcare for date night is expensive
yeah makes sense
One day
Going to try and have money saved up to see Spider-Man No Way Home and have a sitter
neat!
IDK if they still do this, but when I was a kid the local theatre had a sound proofed room for families.
No, not anymore
ah dang
It kind of sucks. There use to be tons of amenities for families for going out in public
must be more money and less overhead without it
Probably
Sometimes kids can make places less profitable because they can sometimes make places noisier or less enjoyable
yeah and I don't think the kids menu is always profitable? IDK though, never run a restaurant
Denny's seems to be pretty kid friendly though
Yeah, kids meals usually lead to adult meals being ordered so they are great lead ins
But yeah, part of the decline in family friendly places is due to people having less kids and often opting to shop at home or wait till movies release digitally
I mean half the battle is getting you to the store to get something then you've got a good chance of impulse buying
They've kind of given up trying around here.
malls are dying. IDK how to feel about it
It's a positive feedback mechanism too. If there are no stores to lure shoppers, shoppers won't be there. If there are no shoppers, it doesn't pay to open a store.
it used to be nice to look around and see many stores, but near end it was just 10 different clothes store and 2 or 3 other
I havent entered mall for few years now
Amusingly, two of the surviving stores are phone stores. The same carrier, too. I'm guessing that says something about the profit margin of phone stores.
yeah. I was really impressed with the employee who handled my recentish upgrade. They had me out the door in less than an hour. I gave them the highest marks available on the survey
I always do that though, even if the service is just "fine", as those metrics are usually interpreted as anything less than perfect is a failure and I'm not gonna do that to someone
from my limited experience, this graph is indeed accurate
at least the US and Eastern European parts
Some malls are still doing okay. Some southern area malls are supported by older retired communities that use them for safe places to work out/walk in the mornings and during the inter months
Which also tends to draw single or stay at home moms looking for a safe place to walk their child
I hear the malls in northern NJ are doing well too.
My wife says they are..
Cleaning up my computer
Trying to take decent pictures too lol
The nicest part of my computer?
The graphics card lol
why my moms $700 phone not come with a charger but my $45 phone did? something is wrong here....
The brick?
Or the cable?
Apple and Samsung (part of their pledge to reduce waste) have stopped including charging bricks in their phone packaging
they say it's so that there is less waste since "everyone" has a charger, but I suspect it's so they can sell more chargers. That's just conspiracy theory though
They reckon that most people have lots of bricks from previous phone purchases
I have, lots of bricks
But I don’t have any USB-C bricks so the charging cables that came with my iPhone 12 mini only really works if I want to plug it into my MacBook Pro
"environmental concerns"
That's usually what the line is
Although I know when I finally get my Pixel 6 Pro I'll just be using all my old chargers anyway
I have many many bricks and don't use them all... plus I usually use my 6 port chargers when charging many things at once
Hehe, Bad Apple demo... nice. What was your build cost for this?
i was thinking they want people to buy those wireless charging things
They probably want folks to buy a charger of some description
I don't think they care if it's wired or wireless
I hope Apple (and then by default Samsung) don't go to wireless only charging
Same, I don't want wireless if I need to use a pad
I don't want to be tied down -- I often use my phone while connected to the charger when my battery is low, and I don't want to have to like, lean over my desk. Plus I don't want the added heat
[this is why I'm using my older chargers on the Pixel 6 Pro when I get it -- they won't generate as much heat in the battery since they won't charge it at max]
I'm still using the Pixel 2/4 XL chargers.
I actually don't know where the stock charger is for my Pixel 2 XL... I realized I had my Nexus 6P charger mixed in with my other random chargers, I've been using it for like Pi and stuff randomly
I probably have like 50kW worth of USB chargers, lol
Geez
lol
Reminds me of the video SparkFun did of an arc welder made from a lot pf chargers
Haha, that was one of the open tabs I just scrolled past on another machine
In college a physics prof charged up a ~1mF capacitor to 0.3 Coulomb and asked us how long it would take to discharge across a small copper wire
I hope the whole not knowing what he was doing and looking to the TA in the back thing was at least partly just an act
He took one guess from a student: "a second" then closed the switch. The little wire evaporated instantly and he told us to hurry out of the lecture hall (it was time to end), "it's not good for you to inhale copper"
He was a great prof. Turns out one does not have to have practical electronics skills to do research in quantum chromodynamics
XD
Lol
Had a board idea, that I was hoping that Limor & Phil might like & they might consider making & selling.
I figured it would have the same size stand offs & screws as the Bonsai Buckaroo, & be a more compact way to easily connect wires, especially if people don't have alligator clip leads.
Can anyone recommend good wiki creation software? Needs to be a private wiki accessible only by certain people

That part. That change of mood
It’s so ridiculously beautiful to me
There’s just something so profound about that part, I can’t word it
Why so late for shipping?!?
Insane demand, supply chain issues. I've been trying to place an order for almost a month as it is -- I'd check back often, and the capacity I wanted was almost always out of stock, and when it WAS in stock, it would be out of stock before I could finish checkout
I kinda wish I had preordered now. But yeah, preorders didn't really have wait issues
Thing is.. my contract wasn't due until December, so I should have been in the same situation.
Free early upgrade?
Pixel 6 Pro on pre-order??
Sure, why not..
Lol. I haven't had a contract in.... I can't remember. This is only going to be my 3rd new phone in the last decade
I've got a Pixel 2 XL, before that was the Nexus 6P. I think I had a Galaxy S4 was what I had before that?
But I had the S4 for a few years before I got the 6P
Before it actually came around, I was dreaming of a 5 XL as replacement for my 2 XL... I was very disappointed by there not being a big one and the 5 didn't feel like it would be an upgrade over my 2 XL anyway
Yeah, I skipped the 5.
Just didn't seem a significant upgrade
It's pretty bad when a phone 3 generations back feels like it's the same thing aside from OS updates
lol
My P2XL is still running strong, currently being used as a bunny cam for Twitch. 😛
Seriously though, OS updates [security specifically] is my #1 priority -- I might have kept using my 6P well into the Pixel 4 era if I'd been able to keep it secure and swapped the battery
Lol. My Pixel 2 XL has been a bit glitchy in daily use, but battery is the biggest thing
But it'll be a B-roll camera probably
I still use my 6P for some shots
You'll really like the 6 Pro.
I'm fairly certain I will
There are 3 things I'm not too happy about tho -- 1] in-screen fingerprint sensor 2] no front-facing speakers 3] pinhole
Don't use FP.. Top speaker is front-firing.. I think..
Yes, the punch hole camera is an annoyance.
I just want a Nexus 6P formfactor with new internals
One thing that has annoyed me with the 2 XL is that I almost always have the screen freak out if I grab the phone by the front and back because there's not enough room to grab without touching the screen
lol
I use fingerprint all the time -- I often put my finger on the sensor as I'm pulling it out, but I don't think I'll be able to do that on the 6 Pro...
Narp
Personally I don't understand the need to make the ENTIRE front of the phone screen
Exactly
YT should normally be a lot more... I think I fell asleep with my phone unlocked earlier. Lol
So, yeah.. Media consumption is a big thing.
We want good speakers!
I feel like that isn't accurate...
Mostly the unlock count
I've only been up for like 3 hours and mostly on desktop
Meanwhile, on my iPhone
lol
Always bugs me, when I look at my old phones..
I've still got the LG P970 (Optimus Black).
The screen res is so bad. 😛
I don't know where anything other than my 6P is, and that's still 1440p -- just a little shorter screen than the 2 XL
almost done!
thats really cool.
you could add a push button, it'll switch to a family calendar pulled down from a google calendar in the
iCal format
There are buttons, so I probably could do that. Have it change automatically every hour or something...
the ical format is nicely sorted so doing a binary search on it the data for whatever happens this week works great.
Nyoom
Well I just narrowly avoided disastrophe
I neglected to do a cold pull after switching from PETG to PLA and the nozzle started clogging mid-print
But I was lucky, the clog pushed itself out and just left a black streak which was subsequently covered by the next layer

I'm trying to decide if a wiki or a traditional manual is best for my project. Are wikis easier for a layperson to maintain than a LaTeX document?
Yes, they're considerably friendlier than LaTeX.
Ok cool I'll start with a wiki and then do a traditional manual too if it's needed. Can you recommend a specific wiki solution?
