Just store your pointers to your variables in locations referenced by pointers referenced by locations referenced by pointers etc. Until all your memory is filled with pointers to pointers
So apparently brute forcing the case together bent a wire and shorted my power supply and now i have to fix that
Uffff
I’m just gonna resolder the wire because nothing is broken
Yeah I burned out an ESP8266 module the other day because the 3.3v line ran past the 9v input line to the power module and when I set it down, the 3.3v line bent over and shorted to 9v
The case won’t close unless i brute force it together, probably because one of the components isn’t flush, but it was working until i squeezed it too hard while it was together
I've fried all my ESP8266 modules in similar ways.
Sensitive little buggers, eh?
It seems that way, or I'm just a klutz
Nah I've burned most of mine out
To be fair the first 3 I didn't know they were 3.3v modules and I just hooked one to 5v, it didn't work, so I tried another one, then another... Then I looked up the module specs...
Felt really dumb after that...
I know that feel
Worst $15 bucks that went up in... Well not even in smoke, that would have clued me in immediately
Yeah, no visible, audible, or even olfactory sign whatsoever, it just doesn't work any more.
There is one visual sign
The red LED attempting to light up.
And glowing very dimly
Oh, mine were stripped down boards without an LED.
Ah yeah I've got the ones with a power and data LED
Good thing I still have 2 modules of unknown functionality to test and see if they work...
But knowing my clumsy nature those will die untimely deaths as well.
I'm in a really bad way ☹️ I can't stop thinking about all the worst case scenarios for the state of my tinkering stuff...
And I can't even ask someone to check on it because they would probably go out there and be like "yup it's a mess"
Like
Duh that's how I left it.
I need to know what's damaged and nobody there can assess that.
I'm considering building a test bed to verify whether I've actually destroyed a couple of irreplaceable integrated circuits.
Which ones?
6530 RRIOT chips
Similar function, but the Atari one is still fairly easy to obtain, these are from a KIM-1
Ah gotcha
Yeah I have one of the Atari ones
Worked when the Atari was powered on before it was scrapped (don't yell at me my dad did it)
(I just profited from the salvaged components)
I am toying with the notion of re creating the Atari Video Music chip with an FPGA
That could be fun
Oh no. My FPGA board is out in the lean to... 😢
Nsbrbsbsbtndndbdbf
I'm so done with extreme weather.
Mine's in a box on a high shelf in the basement, put there after discouraging comments on a Discord killed my enthusiasm
I was working on integration into my laptop design
So all the stuff for the laptop is out in the lean to that just got pelted by a crazy storm while I'm out of state.
No
Walls
I so feel the discouraging comments killing enthusiasm... That happened for a bit with my concept for atomic scale 3D printing even though I'm fairly certain I could get it to work and become a viable product for cheap with enough initial money to invest in the project...
I got over it and now I'm more certain than ever that it's something I will put all of the effort I have into it until I drop dead of exhaustion once I'm in a place to invest in that.
FPGA are a lot of fun but definitely have to have a solid starting point to do useful things. I kind of have been a bit discouraged on FPGA after getting snubbed for an fpga role last year
I have an FPGA board ready to be built up that I designed but I’m pretty hesitant to complete it and test it
Ouch.
WDYM atomic scale? Like Ant-Man atomic? That'd be hard.... You'd have to be really smart to do that IMHO.
Yes the plan is something like a cathode ray tube but with ions
(using electrons and protons to balance charge)
(so that there's a way to deionize the ions after they hit the target)
That's a really good idea
Hence why I'm still planning to pursue it even with as much pushback as I have gotten from people telling me it is impossible. I'll figure that out for myself by trial and (much) error, thank you muchly haha
Because if I can pull it off it means cheap one off chip manufacturing in the home shop
And if I can't I'd like to find out by trying since I will at least learn something from the process
Oh and think about this; if you can balance charge you can intentionally unbalance it selectively to create pockets of support for bridges
Which also means MEMS
So I'm told. Trying not to let it go to my head...
Trying that myself... Not succeeding thus far...
i have often found myself not enjoying the manuals for many dev boards.
I'm trying too keep the syntax as natural as possible.
Following a lot of common practices for both retro and new age gpu tricks.
I made sure if you really want to you can access the frame buffer dirrectly from the esp.
i'm giving people hsl support at SM2.0
So you can run small gpu programs.
You have 2 cores for the gpu one will always be available for side jobs as the 1st cores job will always be keeping a 30 or 60 fps update to the display.
The cpu is still a esp32 but i am looking at larger 16 to 32 MB variants that won't need the extra spi ram slowing down execution.
and i have learned a lot from taking the spi protocol apart.
Screenshots as soon as i get the gpu.grabframe to spit out a image that's not a mess.
Needs moar Taylor's, obvs.
If you can do this, you'll be rich and famous! Especially if you can actually produce chips...
I mean, not the goal but I've realized it is the likely outcome. The goal is to be able to make custom chips for myself and then make it available to others
Rich and famous means you can a lab instead of a lean-to
I do not drink it, but I like the cover's color, the name and the drawings...
I just like coffee. Like the way it smells, like the way it tastes, like the way it makes me feel... Just all around appreciative of coffee... And nice designs are cool too
I got some Columbian cold brew from the store for my road trip and it is delicious
(pre-brewed for easier use on the road)
that's my dad's favourite drink in the mornings
:D
https://youtu.be/Y9m2OquRZmI just went through this...
We're back to blue skies finally though
First time I've legitimately prayed for my life in a long time
I went to pick up my soldering iron to put it up only to realize it was left on all night
I've done that with a hot glue gun
RIP Lifetime table
Did you come back to a puddle?
The hot glue gun didn't survive
That's why I always put a pie tin under my hot glue gun so if something goes wrong it is contained
I came back to a glue stick melted on my silicone mat and a big hole in my table

Thank the maker for Amazon returns
XD
But the maker in this instance killed billions
Yup, not that maker
But eventually he brought balance to the force
Yeah
||And then his zombie-master killed millions more||
||RIP Kijimi||
Slight spoiler from the Rise of Skywalker
Safely to our next stop!
💯
@quartz wren Do you have an Instructables account??
Or a Hackster.io account
I'm on Instructables at https://www.instructables.com/g3holliday
I don't have either, though it wouldn't hurt to get set up with them
And Hackster at https://www.hackster.io/g3holliday
Grayson Holliday is on Hackster.io. Come share your hardware projects with Grayson Holliday and other hardware makers and developers.
Yeah. They're great platforms
I have read articles on both just never thought to make my own posts
Oh. I post my projects about once a month
Sometimes I skip a month
I always put the link in #show-and-tell
Good to know! Will keep an eye on your posts
A new post's coming out tomorrow
Thanks!
If you create an account, put a link here so I can follow you
I'm getting a 404 on the instructables page
https://www.hackster.io/fingerblasterstudios here's the hackster ... Hope I don't get dinged on here for the name, just used my studio address to sign up and it auto picked the name...
Jake Drake is on Hackster.io. Come share your hardware projects with Jake Drake and other hardware makers and developers.
Yeah I know #doxxed
Sorry, old link. Here's the new one: https://www.instructables.com/member/g3holliday/
Nah, not that bad
It also doesn't mean what one might think. It's a finger gun that shoots lasers. Like my icon
Right..... I saw the avatar and figured
https://www.instructables.com/member/FBS/ the instructables
Sent you a message on there too
Hence this
Thing is, if the stuff I'm tinkering with gets me as famous as people are saying it will then there's no reason to even try to be anonymous
Ayyyy
And it may sound narcissistic but that's also the name of the main character in my cartoon. It's just too fitting for a space explorer
Im way too hot and way too cold at the same time...
I get that way

They've got those watches that are supposed to warm you up/cool you down
Those things
Much money though
Yeaaaaahhhhh.... Definitely out of my price range. Which currently in liquid assets is about $2.50
Need money for supplies... Or a decade of experience making glassware
You can enter Instructables contests
those give you anywhere from $50 to $1000
Hackster Contests give you anywhere from $500 to $10,000
Hmmmmmmmmm
What kinds of contests?
The most I've ever won is a $200 dev board and some swag
Both from Hackster
All kinds of contests
Hackster even gives away hardware to the best ideas in the contests, on the condition that you'll enter
RN there's not any electronics contests, but soon there'll be
Hackaday and Adafruit are running a contest currently
I guess a Microbit contest
Perfect gives me time to assess the damage to my lab stuff from the storm
Good!
Hackoween
Spoopy
Build the best hardware projects and win awesome prizes!
I literally am still waiting for the Xilinx dev board I won in June to come from Germany
If you like ML: https://www.hackster.io/contests/xilinxadaptivecomputing2021
Lol
hehe
Hahahahaha so feel this
You're pretty sus..... Imma vote for you
Shamelessly stolen; new poll: are you even good enough to have imposter syndrome?
Imposter imposter syndrome
Super impostor syndrome
Meta imposter syndrome
Lol
@wary herald So BTW I won't be able to make any posts on instructables or hackster until I get home, get my lab exterior finished, move the tech stuff in, and assess everything to see what all is still viable
Should be getting home tomorrow
I'm looking to make a loved one a "custom" puzzle by water jet cutting some large tile. Does anyone know where I could find a decent puzzle blank that I could convert to DXF?
ayyy finally got around to fixing my ancient network setup
much simpler, and now has reserved IPs router-side for all my common devices
also got plex port-forwarding working! v lit moment
This is amazing, she's gonna love it!
Thanks!
what material will you use?
Tile! I thought that would be a really interesting tactile feeling
I'm gonna hire an artist I work with to paint her dog's face on it
Tactile… I see what you did there
lol
Guys do you like my RAM config
Lol
Please explain the joke for my noob mind
Mismatched RAM modules
You're supposed to have matching RAM, I have 3 random kinds
Oh so you can't do dual channel or whatever
I'm running quad channel, but there can be compatibility issues with disparate RAM
Got it
And, yes... the entire rig needs cleaning. 😛
Was that just luck or was there some way to plan it ahead?
Optimal
Just what I had laying around XD
It's not clear from the picture that the heatsink is of finite height
It's finite XD
I was thinking of splurging on one of the infinitely tall models for my next computer
Better heat dissipation
and i just came from trying to solve an overheating cpu, blargh
If I wanted to blow money on something oversized and of dubious benefit, I'd get an AIO watercooler. 😛
.. or any American truck.
AIOs can do a lot better than air coolers in some cases
May include some sarcasm
I need GPU warerblocks
america _ yea, comin again to save the _ _ day yea
oops underscores make italics lol, supposed to be blanks
Derp
People around the world hear that and cringe a little and scan the skies for drones
Making sure they don’t have any oil reserves of course
😛
I will build a WC loop at some point, but entirely custom.
Custom is the only way
I know it would be total overkill, but I really want to build one for my Pentium M desktop. ^_^
Lol
Imagine what you could squeeze out of a Pentium M processor if it was liquid cooled lol
10GHz Dothan!!! 🤣
I have a Core 2 Duo Mac Mini I'm excited to play with
Shame you don't have a Mac Mini? :P
Shame it's a Mac. 😋
Shame it's Intel
Lol
All my Intel machines want to catch fire
I have an Intel MacBook Pro and a custom AMD desktop
I want to be able to afford all SSD storage servers
Same. Although I have 3 workstations, 2 AMD and an older Intel that's trying to explode if I do anything
SSD main boot for me, 2TB cold storage, 1TB NAS
my 2017 mbp seems to want to return to its primordial molten silicon every time I compile something
2TB Samsung 980 Pro for boot and 2TB Inland Premium (PCIe 3) for storage on my main rig, 2x 2TB and a 1TB NVMe in the secondary, and a 1TB NVMe boot, 2TB NVMe storage, and 2x 1TB SATA M.2 For more storage on the old one
Naive question
Nice
What do you folks use all your compute for?
code, keyboard flashing, and school
My main outside work driver is my MacBook Pro
Outside work I use a web browser, zoom, and that's almost it
Video, photo, audio editing, machine learning, design, simulation for astrophysics and material science, programming, stuff like that
Oh and art sometimes
But my computer can't run zoom, it's too resource intensive
Although Ii sold my tablet so I use my iPad Pro exclusively now
Oh wow that's quite a cool array @delicate stream
oh wait also fractals, PCB design
I'm busy busy busy XD
this is impressive AF
3D design, programming, machine learning, hardware control, art, research, PCB design, gaming, photo editing, etc.
I also do some modeling, still learning
looks at 3 workstations with 128GB each of RAM that are always running out
O.o
I'm pretty insane honestly
I have 16GB in my desktop
I run kicad and compile most of my stuff on an HP compaq with a core 2 duo and 4g of ram XD
looks at Atari 800 maxed out with 48kB of RAM and 6800 system maxed out with 576B of RAM
I have an actual desktop with windows but to be honest I use it mostly to watch media and research; the actual work is all done on my laptops and the compaq
bought exact same laptop for personal as they gave him for work because didn't want to shop
ultra fractal runs great under wine so I don't see the use of having to swap machines to run it natively when linux is more than sufficient
My MacBook Pro is largely used for media XD
I have two laptops but no desktop: a 6-year old Asus Ultrabook (8gb ram, one of these low-power mobile processors )- but it runs most of what I need, including Fusion 360, which is really surprising
actually right now lol it's discord, arduino, notepadqq, and tilix open on this machine and jack stauber on the machine that should be running these programs lmao
For the people who said machine learning, what machine learning are you running locally?
I have like 40 laptops
Trying to do video generation -- taking samples of a person to create new material
Oh wow
40 laptops??
+/- 15?
holy wow and a half
Why so many?
Many are vintage... Just... Had them for parts when kinda new, never got rid of
I've got 3x Toshiba Portege M200.. I'm thinking I might do something custom for each one.
At least a dozen Dell Latitude C510/C610
I have 0 functional laptops... Just a bunch of parts and one custom one I'm building from scratch
@late fulcrum hi, could you send me to my e-mail: Iobeymyparents@gmail.com some of your 3d designs?
If you make it, I think you are so interested in electronics that you have like 100 3d designs of your own.
I had 2 laptops a few months ago... But uh... Some things happened and now they are parts
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
(don't worry neither were particularly good, just little internet terminals basically)
I do most of my work on my desktop
Or pen + paper
I'm down to mostly just my desktop (not counting raspberry pis), gave away old laptops and everything else less than 30 years old.
My view right now
no texting and driving
I'm a passenger
Probably won't be driving until we're out of the mountains as I do not have any mountain driving experience and the vehicle is loaded
I really just desktops the vast majority of the time, but on occasion I need to go places, and while I love my iPad, I can't really use that if I need to type or use peripherals
Fair... I mean when I have a laptop I use it for that but I don't see a laptop as essential
If I need to write while I'm out and about I use a notebook
Keeps my handwriting legible too
I mostly use my MacBook Pro and Air, but probably could use the iPad a lot of the time?
I tend to go low tech while designing my tech (at least for the first few passes) sketches, lists, pages of equations in every orientation imaginable...
I'd share some pages of my notes but I feel like most people would just see scribbles
I am the scribble monger after all
Lol
Actually I might even have one of my notebooks with scribbles to show an example in my day bag.
But that will have to wait a few minutes... Food
I write my design notes in cyphertext
Mine is plaintext but may as well be... It's a cypher with my mind as the keyphrase
Lol, I have a mixed cypher... Something my brain can grok but others apparently can't
Mood
Mine is just missing a lot of the information in the actual notes that my brain already has full conception of
This notebook pic is going to have to wait though phones almost dead have to find the charger and it's dark out
I just don't find it necessary to write everything down to complete a design... Only do complete writeups after the fact
And OMG variable naming in my equations... Absolutely not consistent from page to page
Just whatever makes sense to me on a given page for the given thing I'm solving for
Ayyyy just passing pendleton!
Which means I'm almost in my state
Okay I'm gonna get off phone to save battery until next stop when I can get out to find my charger
I'll uploaded them to my repository as I get to it. There's a start there now. https://gitlab.com/bodger/3d-designs
OK
🛬
Lenovo Yoga - i3 and 4g RAM w/ReadyBoost - so 8g
Lucky guy - I've got 1 super old - like 2011 - laptop from a friend - ||that's what I'm on now||, an MacBook from 2014, and a RPI 4 - that's my newest semi-computer
Lol
hehe
I need more storage and RAM
I literally have 2 4g RAM cards, with nothing to put them in
IDK where they are now
In a drawer of my organization system, in anti-static bags
I'm shuffling data on servers right now
GitHub vs GitLab - what's the difference?
Slowwwww
😆
I'm thinking about getting an iPad Mini
Pocket tablet again would be nice
Too many toys, not enough time or resources
That's always a good problem to have sometimes....
I think
Better problem is having too many toys and not enough time to play with them XD
But currently lacking the toys and resources to obtain them
🙂
Nah... 🚙
For some reason, when I cleared 2GB of cookies, all my Discord favorited GIFs went away 😦
oof
I don't clear things
Well, I figured my GIFs would be tied to my Discord account, but I guess not
Nope, totally unrelated
I figured that out now....
Fortunately, I remember my GIFs, so all good again
Mostly
On the one GIF search I have access to on Android, it keeps favorites, and I'd cycle thru them, but when I accidentally lost one... I could never remember what it was
But now there's a different search so I use that
I only had like ||10|| favorites.....
Good idea
iOS and desktop lack favorites anyway XD
I just remember what my favorite searches are, although it changes...
Like, Jaiden Animations GIFs are favs, but some of them apparently disappeared
LOL
Night night
Sweet dreams hehe
Good morning
GOOGLE, HOW DARE
Deleting all the memes from existence is clearly the better solution.
Me with my coffee in the morning
excellent gif. Clicked through to text it to others and found this: https://tenor.com/view/coffee-smiley-coffee-for-you-gif-8990434
Lol
The message implies starboy98 to be a different user than the one trying to change theirs....
That's a giant security hole!
Indeed
Probably a trap to indentify someone who'd next try to login as starboy98.
Hmm...
Once they found this person, what would they do?
@wooden schooner The same thing done with a lot less provocation than that.
Made it home safe
Doing preliminary damage assessment now
Drawers are still firmly on the desk so worst case scenario averted
However anything that was in a box is thoroughly soaked...
Probably going to need to bake several of these chips...
Just putting stuff away though for now so I can focus on getting the lab done
Ufffff
Looks like all my proto board projects have corroded pads ;_;
Huge setback still... But not square 1. That's the important part. Bright side, Jake. Bright side.
It will take some effort and money but should only set me back like 6 months tops
And that's accounting for periods of just depressive crying
Can't mourn until the lab is paneled.
Going to try and knock as much of that out today as possible
Good! I missed a bunch, there was a big storm?
Can you spell it out? IP ban? This is most likely just a curious user
@wooden schooner I don't know .. seems kind of tomfool to me - look at the artwork of that screen capture.
I just don't know how to contextualize it further, but there's a variety of measures that people who run servers .. already .. are using when they know a particular connection is causing them annoyance.
So one of the methods is likely: to trap some classes of users with a simple ruse.
By 'trap' I mostly mean 'identify and re-route'.
waste their time; try to learn just one more thing about this contact than you already knew about them.
The fact that they then tried to login as the fake user credentials says a lot about their possible motives.
I mostly overhear conversations (typed, so not 'overhear' but like that) .. where I don't ask follow-up questions about it.
So I only pick up parts of their strategies when they mention them.
Yeah hit like the day after I left and I had a bunch of my tech stuff staged in a lean to (with no walls) next to my lab-in-progress ready for when the lab is paneled thinking it would be fine over the weekend while I went out of town to help my sister get stuff from storage
ooof glad you're ok!
Yeah, I wasn't here for the storm or I could have brought everything inside
I was, however, in a pretty bad storm on the road trip and that was straight scary
nature doesn't play!
I posted a video a ways up that shows what it was like after it had settled down a bit
This one
wowza!
Yeah I didn't dare pull my phone out during the bad part! Was clenching and praying too hard...and...not sure if you know this about me... I'm not religious. I almost never pray. It was all I could do though (passenger)
don't worry it takes more than that to change your religiosity ;)
The windshield wipers would clear some water away and before they even finished crossing the windshield the spot would be covered again with water
There's a name for it when you hedge your bet with a 'what can it hurt' approach to piling on relgious extra stuff you don't already believe in
Yes, I'm aware.
Pascal's Wager?
Yep
Then there's xeno's wager: will Achilles beat the tortoise?
;)
(jk I'm mashing things up don't get mad at me)
Indeed, it's great for explaining super tasks
Anyone here have an ipad + pencil?
I'm considering getting one for school, and I'm curious whether it's "hella useful" or "waste of money"
My friend is a professor and loves it, he also used the combo in grad school
Compared to writing on my surface book 2, it's much smoother
I've also seen some good reviews of the Remarkable 2 e-ink tablet, depending on your use case.
That was something I was gonna mention, I've wanted one for a while
Any idea if the diameter is twice the blue line or twice the red line?
It's been too long since geometry
diameter is generally for circles etc., it gets more complicated when generalized https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diameter
Hmm, I can always email the creator I guess
talks about hexagons having minimal and maximal diameters https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hexagon
Obviously if you used the blue line it'd bottom out.
The largest circle that fits in that outer perimeter has a radius of that red line.
I have no idea what the tiny things are inside or how they relate to the question. ;)
maximal diameter is the blue line (x2)
Just swing the endpoint of the red line past a corner (where blue terminates).
That's the outside diameter.
;)
I'll email the creator and ask them which one it is
For a convex shape in the plane, the diameter is defined to be the largest distance that can be formed between two opposite parallel lines tangent to its boundary, and the width is often defined to be the smallest such distance. Both quantities can be calculated efficiently using rotating calipers.[1] For a curve of constant width such as the Reuleaux triangle, the width and diameter are the same because all such pairs of parallel tangent lines have the same distance.
tl;dr blue is diameter, red is width
Definition copied from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diameter
In geometry, a diameter of a circle is any straight line segment that passes through the center of the circle and whose endpoints lie on the circle. It can also be defined as the longest chord of the circle. Both definitions are also valid for the diameter of a sphere.
In more modern usage, the length
d
{\...
sweet thanks!
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reuleaux_triangle << well, that was worth it
the Reuleaux triangle is one answer to the question "Other than a circle, what shape can a manhole cover be made so that it cannot fall down through the hole?"
Then you extrapolate its construction to other odd-sided regular polygons and suddenly you have a whole class of Reuleaux polygons.
;)
that's nice stuff
They did a youtube vid with this shape as a bar I think.
It was fun watching it roll or whatever it did (been a while)
Def hella useful
Art, notes, research, media consumption... People also do photo and video editing on the iPad these days
Awesome! Now I just gotta decide between the Air and the mini...
Mini is about pocket size if you have "men's pants"
I'm considering one to live in my pocket
I had hoped the creation of phablets would lead to men's purses being more acceptable, but that seems to be an unattainable dream in the US
I'm a backpack/sling pack person myself
I just wear jackets with lots of pockets
Pockets good
And make friend with people who carry purses so I can make them carry my stuff
Lol
I used to love sidebags, but I like to carry around lotsa stuff & the asymmetric weight wrecks my posture
Backpacks best
Ah, 'trying to upgrade' nightmare land is fun. "Uninstalling xyz" Followed by me thinking, "I think that's necessary to my project..." We'll see what happens
"I should upgrade the package before I starting hunting for this bug" Well worst case scenario I just try again and start from scratch 😅 Nothing mission critical
At least nobody is depending on it!
Exactly! And it's forcing me to be familiar with new to me errors, which is always helpful when debugging issues other folks have
The voice bonnet is a fun little sensor setup https://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-voice-bonnet
hot dog the upgrade didn't break it!
I may have spoken a bit too soon..
Oop
so it goes, wouldn't be a monday if it were so easy haha
Lol
if anyone is looking for a good youtube channel, The Girl With The Dogs is very relaxing and cool. I think it scratches the same itch as people who like skincare videos
Daily Dose of Internet has a lot of wholesome and cool videos
@delicate stream good news! Bread 2040 was merged into circuitpython 😄
Yay official!
I also got the stencil for the bread 2040 panels today so I’ll be able to start assembly, probably tomorrow
:D
Not sure what I said wrong...
Well, reworded; my brother's chickens keep messing up my space so I got a fence up. Will get pics when not in so much pain.
My mom also helped immensely
Kind of annoying I have to make a me pen to keep his chickens out.
Especially when he didn't have permission to let them roam the yard in the first place
Anyway point is lab construction is on hiatus until my body heals because I couldn't keep the lab materials clean without a fence.
Because if I had tried to pressure wash the sheet metal and set it out to dry, it would be covered in nasty when I got back without having it in a fence.
Also took a tumble over a bucket someone left in the walkway in my dad's shop and had a drill in my hand that I managed to save at the expense of a bad impact with the ground for me
This is really not my week but I'm more determined than ever to have my own piece of life.
I channeled my viking side today for sure.
And especially the spirit of my Grandpa Robinson
He earned the capital G
Dude painted a house with a broken arm in a sling (not yet cast) and ended up having his ladder slide halfway down the house and his only concern was saving the paint.
Among many other things. I get my wild side from him for sure.
Anyway things are moving along with the lab even if it isn't on the timeline I had first set
And actually I'm kind of surprised at how much I did so quickly
Afterwards I was like "that had to have been like 6 hours of work" nope it was like 3
And doing 6 hours worth of work in 3 is very taxing...
though I did get help with about 20-30% of the work which not only boosted my morale and thereby my pace, it knocked out a good portion of the work I would have had to do. Working by myself it would have taken probably 9-12 hours because my pace would be drastically reduced and I wouldn't have the help.
And I would have had to do it over more than one day
Because I'd end up getting frustrated, not having someone there to tell me "it's okay, just take a moment if you need to" when I'm getting overwhelmed would have led to a lot of frustration and probably many long breaks
Anyway sorry for the flood, very busy day, TL;DR unkempt chickens, fence construction, and lab progress
I made a classic blunder, I wrote down data that I should have been recording in a spreadsheet. Now I'm doing data entry
Ohnose

Lol
fun fact, the study regarding wolves and alpha stuff was retracted by the author who has tried to go out of his way to educate people about it
Truth.
It seems that in the wild packs are parents and cubs, and he was studying captive wolves. Sort of like studying prisoners and extrapolating about normal human behavior
Yeah, unfortunately people RAN with the "alpha male" thing and never looked back
even if it wasn’t retracted (and it was for good reason; one of the variables was captivity and they never accounted for that IIRC) why would wolf logic apply to humans, eh? lmao
That too
Oh it's very stupid
but the kind of people who grab onto stuff like that don't tend to be concerned with facts
I've often wondered if I made a mistake not hocking "neutraceuticals", I might have less debt
moral debt would skyrocket though
Wait, alpha stuff was all based on one study that is now discredited?
even saying it's based on the study is a loose fit
The alpha people basically smelled the exhaust of the printer the study was printed out on
Wow I thought it was accepted. Thanks for setting me straight on that
Yeah, no proof that alpha males exist. Now days humans use it as a tool of oppression
that's about as close as they got
it's a really common misconception because it shows up in pop psychology or tv and movies constantly
Hm. Status is still a real thing though, right?
among humans? unfortunately
Human status: danger
Among animals https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dominance_hierarchy
A dominance hierarchy, formerly and colloquially called a pecking order, is a type of social hierarchy that arises when members of animal social groups interact, creating a ranking system. In social living groups, members are likely to compete for access to limited resources and mating opportunities. Rather than fighting each time they meet, rel...
What is the wrong extra piece that "alpha" adds to it?
I think it's specifically about wolves, that's the only thing I know about. Other animals may in fact have alphas
Oh ok
Unrelated I found an 850mAh battery in an eCig! Biggest so far!
are you buying e-cigs batteries for the lipos?
I pick them up on walks -- people throw them on the ground
A lot are in good to great condition, so I get a battery at least, and I probably can use the casings, and maybe the coils
Not sure what the sensor is? Might be able to use that
And this one had a switch because apparently it's a double flavor
These are disposable ones
I'm guessing the sensor is a pressure switch, but it could be a microphone
I think it might be a mic, it's a can like one
But it doesn't seem to have anything other than that, the battery, and coil [and this one has the switch for the two coils]
Bigclive has done teardowns of a few of these, there might be some info there
Ohhh, good lead
So I found one, but it's a totally different configuration -- basically they have a reusable coil and a "disposable" battery module, and the battery module has a switch/button you press when you suck in on it
Haha, he has the same "toy" multimeter as me
Ahh, he has a second one with a different style, looks like it might be a more similar style
Ok, it is NOT a mic, it's a.... Air pressure change sensor I guess? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lZ7YIKV4MF4
On the basis that a disposable electronic cigarette only costs a pound from Poundland or Pound World it seems pretty pointless to try and reuse one. But when you consider that you are using what is generally a fully rechargeable lithium cell for just one cycle and then binning it, it seems horribly wasteful. And then there's the pleasure of ti...
I just had to explain to a non-tech/electronics friend why speakers need external power, and why USB ones can't be as loud as like a 65W set
how did you do it
Basically said "headphone jack makes a small amount of sound, and headphones are tiny speakers so they don't need much, USB speakers can get some power from the USB port to amplify the sound, but loud speakers need REAL POWAH"
I was met by frustrated expletives at the realization that he NEEDED to have a power brick for his particular application XD
ok so it wasn't that he didn't realize powah is required to create sound
Yeah something like that
on usb power
Yeah, more "headphones get power, why speakers not get power there?"

Where is that?? I never find those here....
@late fulcrum I have 5 CRT jugs planned. The idea is to melt 2 jars at the interface, then pull from the smaller one's back end material out for the neck. Then on the one that has the same size i will pull the one with the number 2 on its bottom since 1 can be used as an arrow or delimiter but 2 is less versatile (and the other side has a 1). Of course they still have to be cleaned and whatnot but I'm just planning ahead
(yes desk is a mess, this is the building with no walls that got hit by the storm)
(it was a mess before but nowhere near this bad and I've cleaned up a bit)
Point is I have a plan for testing some CRTs with custom internals... Might start with capacitive since I can make the plates pretty easily... I used to hammer various metals at various temperatures not to make anything specific but to just play with the metal... Could probably apply that here...
(learned quite a bit that could apply and I'm confident I can refine those skills)
The glass work on the other hand... Idk we will have to see when I can get the lab to have an "inside" area that is at least out of the wind.
Gotta heal first though today was rough
yaaaay! firefox lost all my pinned tabs during the power outage and subsequent commandeering of my system by windows update
no way to recover pinned tabs?
Philly
I'm thinking about throwing GPS on my PyGamer and making a game that uses location like Pokemon Go or Ingress for it, but probably an offline game (or use LINK CABLES!)
Actually I guess it could be a short range wireless protocol, better in plague times
A retro twist on the mechanics of modern games might be a lot of fun
ONU should promote an average parents commandments for every country.
I think it would be a very good idea.
I think people would understand each other better
they didn't show up in the menu like they usually do
and they're probably in history but I don't know what all I had pinned and what all was just open at the time
soooo there's an instructables contest nobody has entered yet that has 13 days left about making jewelery from gemstones...I have a bunch of agates I collected which are technically a gemstone and I taught myself to do wire wrap with scrap microwave transformer primary wire...so I'm going to enter it.
I'm thinking wire wrap agate pendants
and agates are so common that if you live near a river coming from a mountain you can probably find them near you without much trouble.
Aha
Sweet! I'll be watching
I could definitely see Mac and Dennis tossing their batteries on the ground
Making more Charlie work
Haha
I dunno who they are, but they should just give me their batteries
You don't want to be anywhere near those jabronies
My thoughts exactly
I have seen this GIF, and it's a favorite, but I have no idea where it comes from
And I've seen this guy raging :0
The meme community around the show is very strong
Ohhh, that's on my list
You beat me typing
And surprisingly wholesome, given the show's content
BBL - lunch is calling
Why wouldn't you? Basically me all the time
Because I don't want to waste it XD
Well, want to, not actually put it on everything XD
Lol
I already found the agate I want to use, and I may do a few of them with different types of agate in various shapes with a link to a guide on where and how to find them
Thing is
I have already done this before
Saw the contest for making jewelry with gemstones and I'm like "I know exactly what I'm doing"
Might even do a shellac dip to protect the wire and give a cool sheen on the agate
And 13 days is plenty of time to do this and have 12 days to spare.
If I were cranking on the project
But I'm taking this one easy since I'm in bad shape physically right now so I'll probably only have 11 days to spare
😉
Oh! Y'all wanna see the fence I got up yesterday?
(reason I'm in bad shape physically)
It's super temporary just to keep chickens out
And deter my brother from rummaging through my stuff.
OMG okay so
I want to turn a coffee pot into a CRT
That would be super cool and a really distinctive shape
What I would do is get a glass jar whose opening can set into the coffee pot, then fuse them together at their rims, then extend the back of the jar into the tube neck and connector breakout...
Or possibly do that part first and the fuse them together not sure yet
I also have 2 big pickle jars that would be perfect to reshape the material that's already there...
Just need to design some kind of collapsible form that can go inside to create the profile I want when I heat the jar up to near melting, then pull it out through a hole smaller than the form
Probably something like a whisk
But bigger and in the shape of the jug I want
Make what looks like a coffee maker that transforms into a terminal
Hehehe
Could even use the coffee pot's handle for grabbing onto in order to swivel
Yes I love it.
But yeah I think I have the pickle jar figured out
I need to make a whisk-like object that sits at rest in the shape of the interior of the jug I want
Stiff enough not to collapse under the weight of the glass but flexible enough to collapse when you pull it through the neck of the tube without breaking the neck
Then I just need to make an oven that can hold high precise temperatures and get it to just above glass transition but below dripping temp and just let the glass flow onto the shape of the form
It's already mostly there, just needs a slight profile change
This one I'm just going to fuse the jars together after forming the neck part separately out of the back end of the smaller jar
Heh these were accidentally held together by having warmed up one jar with my hand last night and set the the other one inside
The thermal contraction held it in and I could not get it out without fear of breaking it
So I blew hot air on the rim of the bigger jar with my mouth until the small jar popped out
Very nifty
Glad I realised what had happened because last night the smaller jar was just setting inside and today it was firmly joined and if I hadn't thought to do that I could have broken one or both of the jars
Remember folks if two pieces of glass or metal were sliding into each other with no issues on one day and on another they are a really tight fit or don't fit at all, warm the outer one up and / or cool the inner one down
It will save you much frustration
@late fulcrum what do you think of this idea as far as a starting point for a CRT?
(jars need thorough cleaning I know)
👍
Cool
I think this one is a winner tbh
Indeed
I am in love with that profile
And coffee pots are everywhere so it's a repeatable project
Saving to display on it as the test image...
I have 0
👀
Go to a thrift store there will be at least 20 for about $1-$5 a piece for the whole coffee maker
(at any given time)
If I ever get around to making CRTs, lol
Right I'm just saying how accessible it is as a CRT jug
And all I've seen are roughly the right shape if you add a neck piece
Which, if you're looking for travel size coffee pots, while there are fewer I always see them mixed in when I go thrift window shopping
They are pretty much all the right shape and are easy to find small jars in the same store for very cheap as well to act as that piece and there's a good chance you will find something that fits really well and thus can easily be fused to the pot
(assuming you live in the US, haven't been anywhere else but Canada and only briefly so I have no reference elsewhere)
(but I've been all over the US [over half of the states on various road trips] and thrift stores are everywhere here)
And yes I mean over half of all 50 not just continental US, though the states that represent that number unfortunately do belong only to continental US...havent been to Alaska or Hawaii... I have a map somewhere that I've colored the states in that I've visited
Bad word D:
I had a slip up last night, was auto fixed. At least you have the conscience to fix it yourself when it slips through 😉
🙂
LOL
Thrift stores are the best
Anyway I don't remember who it was that was asking about where to find glass for CRT jugs, if you live in the US the answer is thrift stores. Might even find other cool stuff with components in it you can use if you visit the electronics section and know what you are looking for
||One I went to recently - like last week - was selling bottle rockets||
Wut
I am not in disbelief I am jealous
Yeah - Texas's crazy
🙂
I have been through Texas but it was just passing through to move back to WA from FL
But good
If I remember correctly the speed limit was so high the governer on the moving truck wouldn't let us hit it
Pretty sure it was 85-90 through most of what we drove but iirc the moving truck capped out at 75 or 80
That got a good snicker out of me well done
😉
I sounded like some kind of insect making a call of the wild LOL
Alas, the power of GIFs
I think I figured out the exact reproduceable combination of glass sourcing. Candle jars and coffee pots. Both plentiful at thrift stores
Just need to remove the wax with napthol or something similar then remove that with IPA or heaven forbid acetone
Acetone is wonderful stuff just have to respect the heck out of it.
I know - powerful
Don't need much acetone to get rid of the napthol, just damp a rag, wipe it out, burn the rag in a fire safe location, damp a second rag and do a final pass.
And of course dispose of the second rag
Just remember PPE
As required for each thing you do
It takes a lot more but should do the trick just the same
washes hands in acetone
Haha yeah I am not going to say I'm the best about PPE but it is best to at least state that it should be worn
I've had my fair shair of skin contact with acetone...
I'm chemical resistant :D
Vibranium
I literally have very thick skin from being so rough on it
PPE's hard
I've never had an issue with dry hands from chemicals
Good for you
😄
maniacal laughter
When I uh... Had an incident in the hospital trying to kick a door open to escape, the thick plexiglass over the door cut my foot pretty bad, and I saw that the dead layer of skin was about 1-2mm thick (was quite a section that was exposed around the pad of my foot and it varied across the patch...)
Wow
I run around barefoot on the regular
👍
One time I hiked 2 and a half miles barefoot up a fairly steep incline and beat my brother and dad up the hill by like 20 minutes... I think I might be part goat
One time I stepped on a metal bar, took out a chunk of foot pad... Callous skin was about 5mm! But I don't walk around outside much, too many random needles and nails and stuff
Probably from rubbing on shoes / socks
Probs
It all depends on fitment whether shoes or no shoes will produce more calluses
Was not ready for that almost choked on my own laughter
That is both hilarious and terrifying.... Hilerrifying?
Telarious
If anyone wants a good movie about math, The Man Who Knew Infinity is really good. Dev Patel rocks it
He's also really good in The Green Knight, but I don't know anything about chivalry or Arthurian legend, so I was mostly enjoying the scenery
This is a mood
I figured it out! "terrolarious"
Soooo... I decided I'm adding wifi to my oscilloscope so that it can log into Linux terminals over LAN
Because why not
In fact I have a Teensy that isn't designated for the game console project anymore so I probably will add ethernet too
I wonder if I could get a full blown stripped down version of Linux to run from an SD card off of a Teensy..
You could, but I doubt that's worth it.
All I would need is basic network access and probably SSH
Because it would be acting solely as a terminal
Oh and graphics drivers for controlling the oscilloscope
Why use a Teensy when you can accomplish the same thing with a Pi Zero for less?
Here's a solid outline if you're looking to give it a shot, but porting the data avoids having to deal with initializing the linux kernel
https://jaycarlson.net/embedded-linux/
Because I have a Teensy and I don't have a pi zero
I wish I had a Teensy...
I got a few because I was thinking about using them as the core of my game console project but Pico seems to be the better option there and for much cheaper... So now I have one Teensy left that I haven't blown out or given to another tinkerer... May as well use it
I guess. Not sure how practical it would be as a graphics driver, though.
Wait this is for the DIY CRT, isn't it.
....should work, actually.
Oh the actual graphics signal driving will be done with a Pico using PIO with some minimal peripheral hardware and just given data from teensy
Oh that makes it even easier then
Yup and a lot less code / wasted CPU cycles
Can even offload some of the higher level functions like rasterisation, matrix math, etc. for graphics operations onto Pico because signal driving won't use its CPU directly, just for data manipulation of the memory that the PIO state machines use for the different graphics modes
I actually initially was going to use Pico for all of the oscilloscope stuff but I found the teensy and realized how many more analog inputs it has
So I'll combine them and make a very capable oscilloscope
Also I'm stealing the half shift trick from the HP 264x line for character display
Gonna be niiiiiice and smooth character sets
Not the DIY one, repurposing a small one from a retired piece of optometry equipment my dad got for free and scrapped. Has a bit of burn in but it still displays clearly.
The tube in question
Tuuube
The boards are just mounted this way for prototyping the control hardware that will get inputs from DACs connected to transparent latches addressed from a common bus from the Pico with the electron beam controlled by a PWM control from the Pico, but the magic happens in this design with mixing. I plan to have a set of mixers controlled by more of those transparent latches with DACs to allow a level of arbitrary mixing between direct signal input and Pico control for various display modes
Which means I can have it take basically any grayscale graphics signal in existence with just a bit of setup of that mixing and triggering
And that includes vector and sweep modes being able to arbitrarily mix the control signals too
Not just raster
Going to be tough to fit this all into the box I'm using buuuut
I'm pretty good at packing things in tight spaces.
I might have just figured out how to make that fake CRT using an LCD panel that I was talking about a while back
I might create custom control hardware for the panel in this mini LCD / LED projector I have instead of putting it in the laptop, then have it do a straight optics system and project onto the back of a sheet of paper
The optics it already has uses a mirror but if you project onto the back of a sheet of paper it mirrors as well
If I put it ever so slightly out of focus and figure out how to do an individual pixel set with slow fade thing like I was talking about it could look pretty freaking cool
And if I make it focus on a smaller space than it was initially designed for it should hde the pixel separation anyway, especially if it's a bit smaller of a focus area than the panel size itself it should do even better
Plus it will be very bright as designed in the original projector and I will have to modulate the LED or use a lower voltage for it and still have it be plenty bright
Might even be able to pack it into quite a small space if I play around with the optics a bit
I drew out the optics in the original device with all assumptions being things that only change the outcome in predictable ways, and the whole design actually made a lot of sense to me and I realized exactly what I need to do to modify it, just need to take measurements of the actual optical properties of the lenses in the original projector and I can plug in those numbers to my general analysis of the optics arrangement and figure out exactly where to place things
Basically it's an 18 element super bright LED with a 45 degree plane frustum around it to bounce as much of the light forward as possible fed into a polarizing filter, then a fresnel lens, through a small LCD panel with the other filter built in, then through another fresnel lens, which brings its focal distance fairly close, but there's a mirror at 45 degrees to bounce the light 90 degrees and the focal point is after the mirror which is fairly large (allows redirect of pre-focal light to pass focus into a projection lens that sets the total focal distance of the actual image) then into the aforementioned projection lens to bring it into focus on a larger space. If I find out the focal length of the optics by focusing the LED's light onto a sheet of paper, I can place the projection lens wherever I want and it has quite a wide range, especially if I use another lens to crunch it down further
So I may be able to seriously compactify this if I can print some test mounts for various optics configurations maybe even with built in rulers embossed or engraved as part of the model
Ooh I had an even better idea
I can make an adjustable system for the optics elements to just kind of fiddle with it and get a feel
Without the fragile LCD panel or polarizer
(the fresnel lenses and projection lens are all made of plastic and in the case of the projection lens, it has built in threading for setting its distance along a matching set of grooves. Just need measurements and I can model the inverse and do test fits with different margins)
So if I make slotted channels on rails with screw adjustments for the fresnel lenses and a very long throw for the projection lens I should be able to figure something out just by feel...
Would mount the LED to the stationary frame with accommodation for its heat sink and fan
Actually if I put in another adjustable rail for the panel plus a stationary slot for the filter right over the LED's reflective frustum I should be able have everything with built in scales for the tunable parameters.
Set up the light's throw, then test with the panel. Then design something using the best parameters I find
Actually... This would be so cool to put inside of an actual repurposed CRT jug... Remove the interior, carefully knap the back end down to where you can get the optics to fit, then heat up the sharp edge to smooth it over. Then you remove everything from inside the tube including the phosphor, replacing it with translucent paint that has a a second coat with fine metallic particulate in it. Then you print an optics mount that can epoxy onto the back of the tube that was knapped away and facilitate the projector.
(and paint the outside of the tube with black as well as either using dark epoxy or painting it and having the whole optics chamber sealed)
(but removable)
I absolutely want to do this now...
I bet I could do it with one of these pickle jars I've got...
Without having to deal with breaking glass or any potential shock hazards or toxicity
No need for epoxy either just paint the outside of the glass black except on the face, and use the screw cap for mounting the optics
I'm going to check the fitment
It's almost perfect
As in plenty of margin but not loose
Might even be able to use the original lid as the mounting system
Just cut a hole and fold back the metal as a mounting plate or something not quite sure yet what I want to do
Okay so I misremembered, it was fresnel, polarizer, LCD, fresnel, mirror, projection lens
Although... This polarizer does kind of fit perfectly over the frustum opening, I see no reason not to polarize the light first...
Wait never mind it does, just pulled out in a weird order and I messed it up lol
I guess never mind again...
Because this fresnel doesn not quite fit in the slot it would have to for the light to polarize first
Although I may have a way to do it
I guess they focus it down a bit, then filter it, then use the LCD panel, then focus it down further
Trimmed down the optics about to add the LED and test different distances with the projection lens to see what I can come up with
Heck I may as well throw the panel in and see what happens
...
I think the middle school and elementary school's (kindergarten too) colleagues of Limor Fried must think she's so incredible.
I have this feeling,tought,etc.
Curse you Australia and having all the good Bluey costumes for kids!! 😭
What pray tell is bluey?
A kids show
Ah, makes sense
My daughter wants to be Bingo, one of the main characters on the show
I'm going as The Walking Dude from The Stand for halloween. It's basically just all denim and some pins
The costumes on Aliexpress are creepy
The good ones are AU only currently as US stores are sold out already for Bingo
Holy crap I can project this to cazy size ranges at various focal distances! I might be able to use this for photolithography if I make this a module that can be removed from one pickle jar and put onto another set of mounts for each size range
Let me try and take a pic
Oh nice
Pic not happening only have 3 hands
Need to print a rail system with match grooves for the focal adjustment
Only 3 hands?
Yeah I'm using the 4th one to stand on
Ah I see
Okay I have things resting I think I can get a pic of small focus
I think @stuck moth 's too!
Hey @jovial path don’t tag admins, moderators, or other Adafruit folks
Not unless it’s something that deserves their attention that is community related like a moderation issue
You can tag them if you have an ongoing conversation with them.
But it’s generally advised not to so they can respond to more pressing matters
This pic was really hard to get...
Oh neat
But if it is a person that I talk a lot and I want to talk about something he's probabilly interested with?
The subject
Okay I painted the jar and tried it out... It looks amazing... Unfortunately I tried it too early and I made holes in the black ambient light masking paint
So I'm going to wait for it not to be tacky and get a pic
I could not help myself... Will need to completely repaint but worth to show this. Bottom of a pickle jar
I think generally it's not allowed, unless the specific circumstances that skerr mentioned
And even in a moderation problem, the community moderators can help there as readily
If they allowed general admin pings, we'd all be talking their ears off and they couldn't work on the awesome hardware and software we love
@late fulcrum what do you think of my fake CRT concept (nothing mounted yet) using a cheap wish projector and a pickle jar?
I like it, it looks the part!
Still have to work out the mechanics for allowing a dynamically scaled image with the focal plane always falling on the screen
But when I do it will be wonderful
I dig it
Oh man... If I want to make it really fit the part, I need a knob for focus and a knob for scale.
Hehehehe
And that seriously reduces the mechanical complexity too
Anyway concept proven now time to do something with it
Also now that I know the theory behind these LCD + LED projectors I can make my own designs too if I can find cheap fresnel lenses and polarizing panels
Yay cheap!
Also this really is a much safer alternative to having an actual CRT in your project
Not that they don't have their place, but for people who just want the look but don't need it to be a real CRT, it's perfect
Safer, cheaper, more accessible
I'm going to do an instructables on this idea
Probably throw something up on hackster too. This is good stuff people should see
Also
The jug doesn't have to be glass.
It can be plastic if you want.
I'm about to try something crazy
Await pics when I finish testing some stuff
My beetle has started farming
Farming what?
Not sure yet :O
Beetles sometimes farm fungus
Plants!
And by "report" I mean 3 sentences and a picture
What kind of beetle was it?
Nice! Same beetle you asked about before?
