#

Ah wait, did I de-reference the pointer before I checked the value?

quartz wren
#

Just store your pointers to your variables in locations referenced by pointers referenced by locations referenced by pointers etc. Until all your memory is filled with pointers to pointers

subtle fable
#

So apparently brute forcing the case together bent a wire and shorted my power supply and now i have to fix that

quartz wren
#

Uffff

subtle fable
#

I’m just gonna resolder the wire because nothing is broken

quartz wren
#

Yeah I burned out an ESP8266 module the other day because the 3.3v line ran past the 9v input line to the power module and when I set it down, the 3.3v line bent over and shorted to 9v

subtle fable
#

The case won’t close unless i brute force it together, probably because one of the components isn’t flush, but it was working until i squeezed it too hard while it was together

late fulcrum
#

I've fried all my ESP8266 modules in similar ways.

quartz wren
#

Sensitive little buggers, eh?

late fulcrum
#

It seems that way, or I'm just a klutz

quartz wren
#

Nah I've burned most of mine out

#

To be fair the first 3 I didn't know they were 3.3v modules and I just hooked one to 5v, it didn't work, so I tried another one, then another... Then I looked up the module specs...

#

Felt really dumb after that...

late fulcrum
#

I know that feel

quartz wren
#

Worst $15 bucks that went up in... Well not even in smoke, that would have clued me in immediately

late fulcrum
#

Yeah, no visible, audible, or even olfactory sign whatsoever, it just doesn't work any more.

quartz wren
#

There is one visual sign

#

The red LED attempting to light up.

#

And glowing very dimly

late fulcrum
#

Oh, mine were stripped down boards without an LED.

quartz wren
#

Ah yeah I've got the ones with a power and data LED

#

Good thing I still have 2 modules of unknown functionality to test and see if they work...

#

But knowing my clumsy nature those will die untimely deaths as well.

#

I'm in a really bad way ☹️ I can't stop thinking about all the worst case scenarios for the state of my tinkering stuff...

#

And I can't even ask someone to check on it because they would probably go out there and be like "yup it's a mess"

#

Like

#

Duh that's how I left it.

#

I need to know what's damaged and nobody there can assess that.

late fulcrum
#

I'm considering building a test bed to verify whether I've actually destroyed a couple of irreplaceable integrated circuits.

quartz wren
#

Which ones?

late fulcrum
#

6530 RRIOT chips

quartz wren
#

Is that the same one in the Atari 2600?

#

Or no that's just a RIOT

late fulcrum
#

Similar function, but the Atari one is still fairly easy to obtain, these are from a KIM-1

quartz wren
#

Ah gotcha

#

Yeah I have one of the Atari ones

#

Worked when the Atari was powered on before it was scrapped (don't yell at me my dad did it)

#

(I just profited from the salvaged components)

late fulcrum
#

I am toying with the notion of re creating the Atari Video Music chip with an FPGA

quartz wren
#

That could be fun

#

Oh no. My FPGA board is out in the lean to... 😢

#

Nsbrbsbsbtndndbdbf

#

I'm so done with extreme weather.

late fulcrum
#

Mine's in a box on a high shelf in the basement, put there after discouraging comments on a Discord killed my enthusiasm

quartz wren
#

I was working on integration into my laptop design

#

So all the stuff for the laptop is out in the lean to that just got pelted by a crazy storm while I'm out of state.

#

No
Walls

quartz wren
#

I got over it and now I'm more certain than ever that it's something I will put all of the effort I have into it until I drop dead of exhaustion once I'm in a place to invest in that.

tardy badger
#

FPGA are a lot of fun but definitely have to have a solid starting point to do useful things. I kind of have been a bit discouraged on FPGA after getting snubbed for an fpga role last year

#

I have an FPGA board ready to be built up that I designed but I’m pretty hesitant to complete it and test it

late fulcrum
#

Ouch.

wary herald
quartz wren
#

Yes the plan is something like a cathode ray tube but with ions

quartz wren
#

(using electrons and protons to balance charge)

#

(so that there's a way to deionize the ions after they hit the target)

wary herald
#

That's a really good idea

quartz wren
#

Hence why I'm still planning to pursue it even with as much pushback as I have gotten from people telling me it is impossible. I'll figure that out for myself by trial and (much) error, thank you muchly haha

#

Because if I can pull it off it means cheap one off chip manufacturing in the home shop

#

And if I can't I'd like to find out by trying since I will at least learn something from the process

#

Oh and think about this; if you can balance charge you can intentionally unbalance it selectively to create pockets of support for bridges

#

Which also means MEMS

quartz wren
#

So I'm told. Trying not to let it go to my head...

wary herald
#

🙂

quartz wren
#

Trying that myself... Not succeeding thus far...

dusk oracle
#

i have often found myself not enjoying the manuals for many dev boards.
I'm trying too keep the syntax as natural as possible.
Following a lot of common practices for both retro and new age gpu tricks.
I made sure if you really want to you can access the frame buffer dirrectly from the esp.
i'm giving people hsl support at SM2.0
So you can run small gpu programs.
You have 2 cores for the gpu one will always be available for side jobs as the 1st cores job will always be keeping a 30 or 60 fps update to the display.
The cpu is still a esp32 but i am looking at larger 16 to 32 MB variants that won't need the extra spi ram slowing down execution.
and i have learned a lot from taking the spi protocol apart.
Screenshots as soon as i get the gpu.grabframe to spit out a image that's not a mess.

quartz wren
#

Ayyyy that sounds like progress

#

@wooden schooner I don't know .. seems kind of tomfool to me - look at the artwork of that screen capture.

#

I just don't know how to contextualize it further, but there's a variety of measures that people who run servers .. already .. are using when they know a particular connection is causing them annoyance.

#

So one of the methods is likely: to trap some classes of users with a simple ruse.

#

By 'trap' I mostly mean 'identify and re-route'.

#

waste their time; try to learn just one more thing about this contact than you already knew about them.

#

The fact that they then tried to login as the fake user credentials says a lot about their possible motives.

#

I mostly overhear conversations (typed, so not 'overhear' but like that) .. where I don't ask follow-up questions about it.

#

So I only pick up parts of their strategies when they mention them.

# lusty fossil Any idea if the diameter is twice the blue line or twice the red line?

For a convex shape in the plane, the diameter is defined to be the largest distance that can be formed between two opposite parallel lines tangent to its boundary, and the width is often defined to be the smallest such distance. Both quantities can be calculated efficiently using rotating calipers.[1] For a curve of constant width such as the Reuleaux triangle, the width and diameter are the same because all such pairs of parallel tangent lines have the same distance.

tl;dr blue is diameter, red is width

#

In geometry, a diameter of a circle is any straight line segment that passes through the center of the circle and whose endpoints lie on the circle. It can also be defined as the longest chord of the circle. Both definitions are also valid for the diameter of a sphere.

#

Well, reworded; my brother's chickens keep messing up my space so I got a fence up. Will get pics when not in so much pain.

#

My mom also helped immensely

#

Kind of annoying I have to make a me pen to keep his chickens out.

#

Especially when he didn't have permission to let them roam the yard in the first place

#

Anyway point is lab construction is on hiatus until my body heals because I couldn't keep the lab materials clean without a fence.

#

Because if I had tried to pressure wash the sheet metal and set it out to dry, it would be covered in nasty when I got back without having it in a fence.

#

Also took a tumble over a bucket someone left in the walkway in my dad's shop and had a drill in my hand that I managed to save at the expense of a bad impact with the ground for me

#

Anyway things are moving along with the lab even if it isn't on the timeline I had first set

#

And actually I'm kind of surprised at how much I did so quickly

#

Afterwards I was like "that had to have been like 6 hours of work" nope it was like 3

#

And doing 6 hours worth of work in 3 is very taxing...

#

though I did get help with about 20-30% of the work which not only boosted my morale and thereby my pace, it knocked out a good portion of the work I would have had to do. Working by myself it would have taken probably 9-12 hours because my pace would be drastically reduced and I wouldn't have the help.

#

And I would have had to do it over more than one day

#

Because I'd end up getting frustrated, not having someone there to tell me "it's okay, just take a moment if you need to" when I'm getting overwhelmed would have led to a lot of frustration and probably many long breaks

#

Anyway sorry for the flood, very busy day, TL;DR unkempt chickens, fence construction, and lab progress

Bigclive has done teardowns of a few of these, there might be some info there

@late fulcrum I have 5 CRT jugs planned. The idea is to melt 2 jars at the interface, then pull from the smaller one's back end material out for the neck. Then on the one that has the same size i will pull the one with the number 2 on its bottom since 1 can be used as an arrow or delimiter but 2 is less versatile (and the other side has a 1). Of course they still have to be cleaned and whatnot but I'm just planning ahead

#

(yes desk is a mess, this is the building with no walls that got hit by the storm)

#

(it was a mess before but nowhere near this bad and I've cleaned up a bit)

#

Point is I have a plan for testing some CRTs with custom internals... Might start with capacitive since I can make the plates pretty easily... I used to hammer various metals at various temperatures not to make anything specific but to just play with the metal... Could probably apply that here...

#

(learned quite a bit that could apply and I'm confident I can refine those skills)

The glass work on the other hand... Idk we will have to see when I can get the lab to have an "inside" area that is at least out of the wind.

# wary herald Sweet! I'll be watching

I already found the agate I want to use, and I may do a few of them with different types of agate in various shapes with a link to a guide on where and how to find them

#

Thing is

#

I have already done this before

#

Saw the contest for making jewelry with gemstones and I'm like "I know exactly what I'm doing"

#

Might even do a shellac dip to protect the wire and give a cool sheen on the agate

#

And 13 days is plenty of time to do this and have 12 days to spare.

#

If I were cranking on the project

#

But I'm taking this one easy since I'm in bad shape physically right now so I'll probably only have 11 days to spare

#

😉

#

Oh! Y'all wanna see the fence I got up yesterday?

#

(reason I'm in bad shape physically)

#

It's super temporary just to keep chickens out

#

And deter my brother from rummaging through my stuff.

#

OMG okay so

#

I want to turn a coffee pot into a CRT

#

That would be super cool and a really distinctive shape

#

What I would do is get a glass jar whose opening can set into the coffee pot, then fuse them together at their rims, then extend the back of the jar into the tube neck and connector breakout...

#

Or possibly do that part first and the fuse them together not sure yet

#

I also have 2 big pickle jars that would be perfect to reshape the material that's already there...

#

Just need to design some kind of collapsible form that can go inside to create the profile I want when I heat the jar up to near melting, then pull it out through a hole smaller than the form

#

Probably something like a whisk

#

But bigger and in the shape of the jug I want

delicate stream
quartz wren
#

OMG that would be super G

#

Just flip up the coffee pot and there's your screen

delicate stream
#

Hehehe

quartz wren
#

Could even use the coffee pot's handle for grabbing onto in order to swivel

#

Yes I love it.

#

But yeah I think I have the pickle jar figured out

#

I need to make a whisk-like object that sits at rest in the shape of the interior of the jug I want

#

Stiff enough not to collapse under the weight of the glass but flexible enough to collapse when you pull it through the neck of the tube without breaking the neck

#

Then I just need to make an oven that can hold high precise temperatures and get it to just above glass transition but below dripping temp and just let the glass flow onto the shape of the form

#

It's already mostly there, just needs a slight profile change

#

This one I'm just going to fuse the jars together after forming the neck part separately out of the back end of the smaller jar

#

Heh these were accidentally held together by having warmed up one jar with my hand last night and set the the other one inside

#

The thermal contraction held it in and I could not get it out without fear of breaking it

#

So I blew hot air on the rim of the bigger jar with my mouth until the small jar popped out

#

Very nifty

#

Glad I realised what had happened because last night the smaller jar was just setting inside and today it was firmly joined and if I hadn't thought to do that I could have broken one or both of the jars

#

Remember folks if two pieces of glass or metal were sliding into each other with no issues on one day and on another they are a really tight fit or don't fit at all, warm the outer one up and / or cool the inner one down

#

It will save you much frustration

quartz wren
#

Right I'm just saying how accessible it is as a CRT jug

#

And all I've seen are roughly the right shape if you add a neck piece

#

Which, if you're looking for travel size coffee pots, while there are fewer I always see them mixed in when I go thrift window shopping

#

They are pretty much all the right shape and are easy to find small jars in the same store for very cheap as well to act as that piece and there's a good chance you will find something that fits really well and thus can easily be fused to the pot

#

(assuming you live in the US, haven't been anywhere else but Canada and only briefly so I have no reference elsewhere)

Can even offload some of the higher level functions like rasterisation, matrix math, etc. for graphics operations onto Pico because signal driving won't use its CPU directly, just for data manipulation of the memory that the PIO state machines use for the different graphics modes

#

I actually initially was going to use Pico for all of the oscilloscope stuff but I found the teensy and realized how many more analog inputs it has

#

So I'll combine them and make a very capable oscilloscope

#

Also I'm stealing the half shift trick from the HP 264x line for character display

#

Gonna be niiiiiice and smooth character sets

The boards are just mounted this way for prototyping the control hardware that will get inputs from DACs connected to transparent latches addressed from a common bus from the Pico with the electron beam controlled by a PWM control from the Pico, but the magic happens in this design with mixing. I plan to have a set of mixers controlled by more of those transparent latches with DACs to allow a level of arbitrary mixing between direct signal input and Pico control for various display modes

#

Which means I can have it take basically any grayscale graphics signal in existence with just a bit of setup of that mixing and triggering

#

And that includes vector and sweep modes being able to arbitrarily mix the control signals too

#

Not just raster

#

Going to be tough to fit this all into the box I'm using buuuut

#

I'm pretty good at packing things in tight spaces.

#

I might have just figured out how to make that fake CRT using an LCD panel that I was talking about a while back

#

I might create custom control hardware for the panel in this mini LCD / LED projector I have instead of putting it in the laptop, then have it do a straight optics system and project onto the back of a sheet of paper

#

The optics it already has uses a mirror but if you project onto the back of a sheet of paper it mirrors as well

#

If I put it ever so slightly out of focus and figure out how to do an individual pixel set with slow fade thing like I was talking about it could look pretty freaking cool

#

And if I make it focus on a smaller space than it was initially designed for it should hde the pixel separation anyway, especially if it's a bit smaller of a focus area than the panel size itself it should do even better

#

Plus it will be very bright as designed in the original projector and I will have to modulate the LED or use a lower voltage for it and still have it be plenty bright

#

Might even be able to pack it into quite a small space if I play around with the optics a bit

quartz wren
#

I drew out the optics in the original device with all assumptions being things that only change the outcome in predictable ways, and the whole design actually made a lot of sense to me and I realized exactly what I need to do to modify it, just need to take measurements of the actual optical properties of the lenses in the original projector and I can plug in those numbers to my general analysis of the optics arrangement and figure out exactly where to place things

#

Basically it's an 18 element super bright LED with a 45 degree plane frustum around it to bounce as much of the light forward as possible fed into a polarizing filter, then a fresnel lens, through a small LCD panel with the other filter built in, then through another fresnel lens, which brings its focal distance fairly close, but there's a mirror at 45 degrees to bounce the light 90 degrees and the focal point is after the mirror which is fairly large (allows redirect of pre-focal light to pass focus into a projection lens that sets the total focal distance of the actual image) then into the aforementioned projection lens to bring it into focus on a larger space. If I find out the focal length of the optics by focusing the LED's light onto a sheet of paper, I can place the projection lens wherever I want and it has quite a wide range, especially if I use another lens to crunch it down further

#

So I may be able to seriously compactify this if I can print some test mounts for various optics configurations maybe even with built in rulers embossed or engraved as part of the model

#

Ooh I had an even better idea

#

I can make an adjustable system for the optics elements to just kind of fiddle with it and get a feel

#

Without the fragile LCD panel or polarizer

#

(the fresnel lenses and projection lens are all made of plastic and in the case of the projection lens, it has built in threading for setting its distance along a matching set of grooves. Just need measurements and I can model the inverse and do test fits with different margins)

#

So if I make slotted channels on rails with screw adjustments for the fresnel lenses and a very long throw for the projection lens I should be able to figure something out just by feel...

#

Would mount the LED to the stationary frame with accommodation for its heat sink and fan

#

Actually if I put in another adjustable rail for the panel plus a stationary slot for the filter right over the LED's reflective frustum I should be able have everything with built in scales for the tunable parameters.

#

Set up the light's throw, then test with the panel. Then design something using the best parameters I find

#

Actually... This would be so cool to put inside of an actual repurposed CRT jug... Remove the interior, carefully knap the back end down to where you can get the optics to fit, then heat up the sharp edge to smooth it over. Then you remove everything from inside the tube including the phosphor, replacing it with translucent paint that has a a second coat with fine metallic particulate in it. Then you print an optics mount that can epoxy onto the back of the tube that was knapped away and facilitate the projector.

#

(and paint the outside of the tube with black as well as either using dark epoxy or painting it and having the whole optics chamber sealed)

#

(but removable)

#

I absolutely want to do this now...

#

I bet I could do it with one of these pickle jars I've got...

#

Without having to deal with breaking glass or any potential shock hazards or toxicity

#

No need for epoxy either just paint the outside of the glass black except on the face, and use the screw cap for mounting the optics

#

I'm going to check the fitment

#

It's almost perfect

#

As in plenty of margin but not loose

#

Might even be able to use the original lid as the mounting system

#

Just cut a hole and fold back the metal as a mounting plate or something not quite sure yet what I want to do

#

Okay so I misremembered, it was fresnel, polarizer, LCD, fresnel, mirror, projection lens

#

Although... This polarizer does kind of fit perfectly over the frustum opening, I see no reason not to polarize the light first...

#

Wait never mind it does, just pulled out in a weird order and I messed it up lol

#

I guess never mind again...

#

Because this fresnel doesn not quite fit in the slot it would have to for the light to polarize first

#

Although I may have a way to do it

#

I guess they focus it down a bit, then filter it, then use the LCD panel, then focus it down further

quartz wren
#

Trimmed down the optics about to add the LED and test different distances with the projection lens to see what I can come up with

#

Heck I may as well throw the panel in and see what happens

The good ones are AU only currently as US stores are sold out already for Bingo

quartz wren
#

Holy crap I can project this to cazy size ranges at various focal distances! I might be able to use this for photolithography if I make this a module that can be removed from one pickle jar and put onto another set of mounts for each size range

Let me try and take a pic

Hey @jovial path don’t tag admins, moderators, or other Adafruit folks

oh. I tought it only was Adafruit.

I did not know this.

tardy badger

Not unless it’s something that deserves their attention that is community related like a moderation issue

You can tag them if you have an ongoing conversation with them.

But it’s generally advised not to so they can respond to more pressing matters

quartz wren

Oh man... If I want to make it really fit the part, I need a knob for focus and a knob for scale.

delicate stream
#

Hehehehe

quartz wren
#

And that seriously reduces the mechanical complexity too

#

Anyway concept proven now time to do something with it

#

Also now that I know the theory behind these LCD + LED projectors I can make my own designs too if I can find cheap fresnel lenses and polarizing panels

delicate stream
#

Yay cheap!

quartz wren
#

Also this really is a much safer alternative to having an actual CRT in your project

#

Not that they don't have their place, but for people who just want the look but don't need it to be a real CRT, it's perfect

#

Safer, cheaper, more accessible

I'm going to do an instructables on this idea

Probably throw something up on hackster too. This is good stuff people should see
