late fulcrum
#

Is that price or cost to make?

tardy badger
#

Cost to make is ~$5

late fulcrum
#

Not bad.

tardy badger
#

No including my time to assemble

#

PixelWing boards cost ~$17 to make, selling for $39.95

#

PixelLeaf RP2040 cost ~$11 to make, selling for $29.95

#

most expensive portion of the PixelLeaf RP2040 are the neopixel which I buy on a reel

late fulcrum
#

The Boarduinos in the picture were built from the bare PCBs that AdaFruit used to sell: a product that doesn't even show up on the website any more, even as "discontinued". https://www.adafruit.com/product/69

tardy badger
#

Wow

#

A piece of ada history

#

Kind of cool šŸ™‚

#

Sometimes I wish I had the tenacity and drive Ladyada has

tardy badger
#

She is so darn inspiring

delicate stream
#

I wish I had 1/10th her drive and passion

late fulcrum
#

Fervently agreed. I've learned so much from her.

delicate stream
#

And like 1/100th her engineering skill, lol

tardy badger
#

I got better at part sourcing because of Desk of Ladyada

#

And better about trying to be unique with designs because of New Products section of Ask an Engineer

late fulcrum
#

I got better at PCB layout (both technically and in a zen sense) from her tutorials

tardy badger
#

Yeah

#

I’ve learned a ton from the community and being able to give back has helped a lot

delicate stream
#

Navigating the part madness is the easy part for me XD I've had LOADS of practice using the same sort of search systems for PC hardware, so as long as I know the general specs of the part, I can probably find an equivalent... It's knowing all the how to mix parts and actually design circuits I need work with, lol

tardy badger
#

True

#

So so true

#

I had to learn not to be so stringent on what I used in my designs

late fulcrum
#

Wading through the bewildering variety of LEDs on offer to choose just the right ones for a costume prop was an adventure

tardy badger
#

Yeah

delicate stream
#

throws NeoPixels at everything

late fulcrum
#

I even bought the fancy optical epoxy to glue them in place from DigiKey, a princely 4 grams of it.

tardy badger
#

Finding a supplier of sk6812 was a scary journey for me because I had never ordered off Aliexpress before

late fulcrum
#

I found some 199 LEDs per meter LED strip overseas, but $50 for shipping dissuaded me from actually buying any.

delicate stream
#

Personally I recycle as much old knowledge as possible into everything I do -- why research a whole new solution if you can tweak an existing one? Thus NeoPixels going into most of what I do, lol

#

[or NeoPixel compatibles]

late fulcrum
#

I did the same trick to use an Arduino port to program a project instead of learning a whole 'nother code development environment (I did ultimately end up building a custom board definition and memory map)

delicate stream
#

lol

tardy badger
#

Lol

#

I was kind of terrified at making my first circuitpython board

delicate stream
#

I have no fear, I know exactly what I want to do, and it's a simple design, so I'mma go full steam at it! soonā„¢ļø

tardy badger
#

I started with the 328p which you know is so over done that anyone can make an Arduino board with it lol

#

So going to something that I had to figure out making my own board definition and bootloader. It was new and I wasn’t sure at all how to accomplish that

#

Thankfully Adafruit has the resources to make that easy too

delicate stream
#

I made a 328p board by hand, lol

tardy badger
#

Or requesting a PID 😱

#

And also learning that joining the USB standards org is expensive

delicate stream
#

Protip: don't be me, DO NOT hand carve your PCBs. It's dumb. Stop it.

tardy badger
#

So if anyone wants to sponsor Oak Dev @ $6000 a year lol

delicate stream
#

lol

#

That's my food budget

#

I'd starve

late fulcrum
#

Hand carve your own PCBs, you say?

tardy badger
#

Maybe my food budget but I’ll never tell šŸ™‚

#

Nice filter

late fulcrum
#

Not quite a filter, RF energy harvesters

delicate stream
delicate stream
late fulcrum
#

On a good day, I could get the thick end of a microwatt

tardy badger
#

Ohhh nice

late fulcrum
#

Unless I set the antenna right next to a cell phone

delicate stream
#

What does one do with a thicc microwatt?

tardy badger
#

Thiccccc

#

What did you do with all that powah?

late fulcrum
#

You can see it taking about 4 seconds to accumulate about 60mV in a capacitor, at which point the energy harvesting chip grabs the power and transfers it to another capacitor. When the second capacitor is charged enough, the CPU boots up, does some stuff, and goes back to sleep.

#

I could run for about half a second a few times a day.

delicate stream
#

Or a couple seconds once a day!

late fulcrum
#

Then they wanted me to add WiFi. Um, there is simply not enough power available to do that. Then they wanted me to add cellular. That's in the realm of "there will never be that much power available"

delicate stream
#

Mechanical WiFi!

late fulcrum
#

When I put the antenna a few centimeters from a WiFi router, I could get a 60mV packet in a second and a half!

delicate stream
#

So what CPU do you use that can actually run on such low power and do anything?

late fulcrum
#

TI MSP430FR series

delicate stream
#

does a Google

late fulcrum
#

The non-volatile FRAM was a lifesaver too

delicate stream
#

I can imagine!

#

Oh wow, that's REALLY powerful and low-power at the same time

late fulcrum
#

There's a newer RF430FRL line that's powered by NFC, impressively power efficient.

tardy badger
#

Yeah, TI is pretty great at low power

delicate stream
#

I have a chonker MSP430 around here somewhere that I never learned to use...

tardy badger
#

Most all their LDO have incredibly low quiescent current

#

Like 30uA or less

late fulcrum
#

I found one hiding in a blood glucose monitor, a teeny coin cell about the size of a lentil powers it for two weeks.

delicate stream
#

Wowzers

late fulcrum
#

The energy harvesting chip was a TI one too: the other vendors' offerings needed like 300mV to do anything.

#

Here's the board from the glucose monitor: it's about 25mm across

delicate stream
#

How many RF harvesters would you need to power a Feather?

#

RP2040 version

late fulcrum
#

Rather a lot, unless you park one by a radio transmitter or high tension power line.

delicate stream
#

... would right outside of a big power substation supply a lot of usable RF power?

late fulcrum
#

The fence would probably damp out most of it, unless you held an antenna up over the fence

delicate stream
#

Hmmm... What if it's just inside the fence?

#

Guessing these are wide band if a fence will absorb it?

late fulcrum
#

Power substations (in the US) are 60Hz, not really RF: the fence would be a pretty effective shield at that frequency.

delicate stream
#

ah, I thought they did higher frequencies in addition to voltage for transmission...

late fulcrum
#

More and more transmission is moving to DC these days

tardy badger
#

60-120Hz depending on where it’s going and how for and what part of the grid it’s at

delicate stream
#

Yeah, I don't think they've done any DC work here tho

tardy badger
#

All MCU are DC

#

šŸ™‚

late fulcrum
#

I thought the Marvel Comics Universe was separate from DC comics?

delicate stream
#

XD

tardy badger
#

Technically DC is just AC that’s super stable and only has mV differences in amplitudes

#

Like 10s of mV.

tardy badger
#

If you look at a DC supply on an oscilloscope you can see this

#

And the funny thing about crystal oscillators, they tend to produce more of a sine wave than a square wave

late fulcrum
#

The very high Q of crystals will tend to do this

tardy badger
#

Load capacitance helps tune the speed and shape

#

A line resistor will control the drive strength

#

But it’s all AC if you have a fine enough scope

delicate stream
#

Do batteries have any fluctuations?

late fulcrum
#

They're fairly electrically quiet, but not completely so. The terminal voltage also varies with the temperature and state of charge.

delicate stream
#

I can see a 60Hz ripple getting thru filtering on an AC-fed power supply, but I figured batteries wouldn't have anything consistent like that

tardy badger
#

The issue with PCBs is you can’t avoid cosmic background microwave radiation

#

Muahahahaha

tardy badger
#

So you can inherit noise inadvertently

late fulcrum
#

There is the diurnal 11.6µHz ripple šŸ—“ļø

tardy badger
#

Plus with how polluted RF is these days, you’ll pick up some of that too

delicate stream
late fulcrum
#

Since battery voltage varies with temperature, and days are generally warmer than nights, battery voltage will tend to vary with the time of day: this has real world implications in that smoke detectors will tend to start their low battery beep in the middle of the night.

delicate stream
#

Oh, I didn't know there was a precise frequency of that

tardy badger
#

Ah makes sense

late fulcrum
#

It's just the reciprocal of the number of seconds in a day

delicate stream
#

ahh

tardy badger
#

Did you know that the three gorges dam in China shifted the rotation of the earth and slowed it down by a few milliseconds

late fulcrum
#

I did not, that's a little surprising to me

tardy badger
#

Sorry it was microseconds not milliseconds

#

0.06uSec

delicate stream
#

I was gonna say, it couldn't have been THAT much, lol

#

1ms would be insane

tardy badger
#

0.06usec is still a lot all things considered

delicate stream
#

I mean, yeah XD

#

Anything we do that's measurable vs. the EARTH is a lot

#

But there's like... measurable vs. practically different

late fulcrum
#

There's someone at NIST with a title like "Controller of Earth Rotation" on their door: this sort of thing would be very relevant to them.

delicate stream
#

lol

tardy badger
#

Yeah haha

#

Imagine releasing the entire volume of the three gorges dam

#

I couldn’t imagine how devastating that would be

late fulcrum
#

Speaking of earth rotation, time for me to go to bed

tardy badger
#

Yeah, about midnight eh?

late fulcrum
#

Yup

delicate stream

Uggghhhh need more tiiiiime

#

Hey how’s it going

#

I am pretty knitty gritty into AI now

jovial path
#

I am thinking in an add-on on Discord to kind of put darger to safety tags on people, if a people does something that you consider wrong you put a little dot closer to the more red color in the palette, but you do not block the person, with little by little strange things you keep track on people, that maybe say too many bad words, if a person stopped doing this you put the dot closes to the most blue color.

#

What do you think?

weary fiber
#

Blegh, just had to name & shame a seller of cosplay parts

late fulcrum
#

I'm confused, is it a cheap $35 or an expensive $500? Or are those separate services? Similarly with the $145 cut but $55 cutting fee?

weary fiber
late fulcrum
#

Oh, weird pricing strategy. Got it.

weary fiber
#

It's honestly frustrating 'cause they're so close to being great. Just tiny tweaks to the design + an open source would fix this for me.

#

With a better design & public dimensions, I'd happily overlook the cost & build quality 'cause it's such a unique product

delicate stream
#

Maybe I should do that so I can make more money than them by doing it better

late fulcrum
#

I can understand why they might be reluctant to go open source, but I agree that they should be more responsive, deliver the extra-cost quality you paid for, and it would be nice if they provided dimensions.

weary fiber
delicate stream
#

Dimensions and fixing the problems at least

weary fiber
#

They're a small business (probs want to secure their profit line), and releasing the models would mean that anybody could print the parts at home for cheaper

#

But, counterpoint:

#

they could do what Valve did with the Index!

#

Provide CAD models, but ONLY of the bits that stuff would attach to

late fulcrum
#

While that would be useful for that subset of users that wants the info and can work with CAD models, it's a surprising amount of effort to do, and generates more customer support calls (even if they state the CAD models are where is, as is, and no support is provided).

#

Sort of like Canon refusing to provide interface details for their older printers. While it irks me, I can understand their point of view (my main beef is them lying about what operating systems their printers support).

delicate stream
#

Canon dumb

late fulcrum
#

Yeah, they put me and my 2000 (imaginary) listeners off buying their products in the future.

#

I did finally find a color printer I actually like, but it doesn't do metal foil like the accursed can't be used Canon (theoretically) does.

delicate stream
#

You have listeners? :O

late fulcrum
#

I claim I do when I'm talking to customer support lines.

delicate stream
#

lol

late fulcrum
#

Granted, there are probably a few people who read my blog or watch my youtube vids, but I haven't had actual "listeners" since my college radio days.

#

And occasional times when I show up in the news for various reasons.

weary fiber
late fulcrum
#

I'd agree with that: dimensions/specs are a reasonable thing, I'm just thinking that an actual CAD model could be a bit much.

weary fiber
#

totally, and since they're a small shop, naggy customers would probably feel empowered to demand "I want the model in my specific format!!!!!"

weary fiber
late fulcrum
#

They claimed their Selphy line had MacOS support, but it was only partial support: the metal foil printing that was the printer's party piece was only supported for MS-DOS, and not well. I still have the printer and a bunch of media packs for it, that I can't use.

tardy badger
#

Testing more today on the Bread 2040 ✨

#

Tested all GPIO and works great so far šŸ™‚

late fulcrum
#

Project Gutenprint does support that printer, but only in a couple of modes. I suspect the foil modes aren't terribly different (presumably additional color planes), but after renting an expensive USB analyzer and trying it with an MS-DOS machine, their software still didn't work and I was unable to get any data or prints, so now I'm out the cost of the printer, plus the media packs, plus the USB analyzer rental, plus the time, effort, and sanity the whole MS-DOS episode cost me.

#

I may eventually destroy the printer with my solar energy furnace and put the process on youtube.

delicate stream

dusty citrus

Some brick house turned to lava and is still dripping out in the street

late fulcrum
#

I can walk for about 15 minutes before my phone overheats and dies. But I'm good for a couple of hours.

delicate stream
#

I almost had my main phone die

#

But not from heat, just low battery

dusty citrus
#

I wanted to make a peltier chips suit but they require 40 amps to lower temperature by 120oF

tardy badger
#

I take my dog outside and that’s about all I spend outside these days

delicate stream
#

Antique phone doesn't do so well anymore

late fulcrum
#

I thought of 3D printing an assembly to hold a Peltier cooler on my phone and blow air across it, but then I realized the PLA would melt

tardy badger
#

Aside from taking my kids to the playground

dusty citrus
#

It seems like if I do such a suit I'll get shocked by 40 amps and die

late fulcrum
#

I've never attempted printing ABS

dusty citrus
#

The problem with peltier chip is the other side is cooler/hotter than the other side by a good factor

#

and all the amps required

late fulcrum
#

I don't think there are any Peltier that can do 120° (even the little F ones) in a single stage

dusty citrus
#

I don't have one but I heard of something like 180oC if the other side is cooler by 40oC

#

The ones I checked on digikey claims they can raise temperature by 60-70oC (150oF ish I think ?)

late fulcrum
#

But I'm just looking at a little one I can shove about 6 amps through into a heatsink + fan

dusty citrus
#

But didn't expect them to require so much amps

late fulcrum
#

That's 70.5°C when it's moving ZERO heat.

#

Still, I'm hoping to be able to remove heat from the phone fast enough that the phone doesn't shut down and stop when playing a demanding game on a hot day.

dusty citrus

Anyway going outside, if I don't make it back was good knowing you all and thanks for teaching me electronics isn't magic that was great šŸ˜„

late fulcrum

Maybe I should try ice cooling my phone. I do have a cold pack and source of ice.

delicate stream
#

Just be careful of condensation!

late fulcrum
#

That is indeed the problem

tardy badger
#

Ah yes. Moisture

late fulcrum
#

Maybe a little air circulation loop where the air sheds its moisture at the colder side then cools the phone on the warmer side

tardy badger

A 35°C day is not bearable for me

late fulcrum

tardy badger

delicate stream

Been like 25-29C here and I've been dying

late fulcrum

I was out in 50°C dry air and that was too hot for me. It was like standing in front of an oven. When the wind blew, it made me hotter instead of cooler.

I had a strike here. I was at the computer late at night, it went flash; bang; black, faster than I could type that, although a little slower than displaying it. I was sitting here at my computer and the sequence was: all external windows lit up brighter than direct sunlight, then a bang that rattled all the windows and shook the house, then the lights went out (it technically wasn't full dark, the computer and monitor were on a UPS); all in a fraction of a second. I was the only house affected, so when talking to the electric company it wasn't an "emergency" so they put it on the next days "urgent" list. A tech showed up the next morning and showed where he could see the evidence of the strike, it had blown the fuse to my house, but before he reset it he had to check that the ground wire it had followed to "earth" was still good.

I'm thinking about bringing the arrows against the right side letters part, then squeezing the whole PrntScrn/home/end/pages all into a x2 segment there

that's a lotta keys! i hope to somehow swap or rewire my kb's "function/fn" key for something else.

I think I'll need to print and/or cast custom

Lol, it's cool. This is entirely a "because I want to" project, I just want the experience XD I have printed some caps, made some optimizations, so I could print a full set if I needed to. But if you need to work, you should work :P

speaking of may i ask where these memes are from? is there a sort of memehub?

#

never got into them to be honest. but i can animate stuff so if they can be uploaded custom, dunno why i haven't made some

delicate stream
#

I just use GIF search in Discord, and know the ones I use by exposure or they're close enough to my keyword search and I like them. That one is called "this is fine". KnowYourMeme can tell you a lot about memes

#

Memes are... Complicated. Most are spread by someone initially creating/sharing, some people like it, take it, share it with friends, maybe tweak it, rinse and repeat many many times over

dusty citrus
#

lol ok, thank you for the meme help! never noticed the search bar up top til now..

#

and what's this gif button at the bottom here do?

delicate stream
#

Haha, you're welcome. I speak meme pretty fluently

dusty citrus
#

so it looks like one can't upload their own gif, only searchable from the built in repo?

delicate stream
#

You can upload to Tenor or Giphy or whichever one you're using, but not within Discord

honest jolt
#

You can upload .gif files to Discord as well but they won't go to Tenor/Giphy, they stay on Discord servers. They also have to stay under file size limit.

hey guys, question, what jobs do you guys think are suitable for fresh EE graduates?
im currently job hunting to fill in the time, but most of the jobs are either being industrial technicians, repairmen, or supervisors
The reason why they're not really what im looking for is :

  1. i have no experience or knowledge on industrial machinery
  2. i have made a vow to myself in front of others that i won't be stuck in some dirty repair shack cuz it looks so depressing
  3. supervisors are a high levelled job, i dont have experience in that
#

no offense to those in the repair field tho, sorry

Me and my father finished this shelf. Pretty great.

delicate stream

In my house, tables is shelves... IKEA LACK tables are amazing. $5-15 depending on sales, stackable, light-weight but rather strong -- perfect for stacking to make shelves, or a taller table with storage for a 3D printer, or even an enclosure if you print some brackets and have some acrylic!

quartz wren

just mangled a pico

#

still works

#

uploaded blink to test it and it's happily blinking away

#

no clue how as I had a razor blade between its layers on accident

delicate stream
#

Oof

#

Working good tho

quartz wren
#

yeah it looks like the razor blade barely went in, but from the angle I was trying to work it off the board from, it looked like it sliced halfway through the board

#

but uh...I had it anchored on one side with loops of wire....

#

that were soldered in

#

with another pico on the other side that they were also looped through

#

so yeah...nasty bit of rework but I should still be able to use this pico maybe

#

at least the USB host pads are fully intact

#

if nothing else I can use it as a test bed for abusing the pico

#

it clearly can take the abuse

#

will get pics of how the module looks when I get to my phone (it's out in my shop)

delicate stream
#

What were you doing with the razor anyway? XD

quartz wren
#

luckily the other pico managed to escape unharmed even though I had to get a razor blade between the one I mangled and the board they were both attached to in order to cut the loops of (solid core) wire

#

initially I was using it to get between the pico and the board while desoldering as I don't have any solder wick or a solder sucker or a desoldering iron

#

because the other side of the pico was just surface mounted

#

if I had solder wick I could've just wicked the solder from around the loops and bent them out straight again but no

#

it kept pooling because surface tension and I couldn't get enough purchase to bend all the wire loops out

#

so the razor blade it was

#

at which point I said screw it I'll just mangle this pico to save the one on the other side

#

but they both still work so I'm happy with the result

I just took melatonin to fix my screwed sleep schedule

#

Probably not the best idea. But melatonin...no way it can be harmful right

wooden schooner
#

That is the most common use of melatonin supplements afaik, and very much not harmful

delicate stream
#

You'd need an insane amount to be harmful

wooden schooner
#

To kick the sleep schedule back into place I'd recommend 3–5mg, for regular use / trouble sleeping perhaps 1mg

#

Afaik, doses higher than 5mg are just not useful

delicate stream
#

I think it has to like 100-1000x that to be dangerous

wooden schooner
#

(Also I'm not a @delicate stream, ask your GP šŸ™‚)

delicate stream
#

Yeah, ask your GP what dose is right for you. Many people are in the 0.5-5mg camp, but some need like 10mg or more... it CAN really screw your sleep cycle up if you take too much, but that's really about it unless you're taking very high doses for a long time [which isn't really well researched]

wooden schooner
#

I recall hearing that most effective dose range according to most studies is less than 1mg, but the OTC supplements are more than that because of some stupid patent thing. Do you know if that's true?

delicate stream
#

Not sure -- I haven't looked too much into it, I just know it can be highly effective and usually only needs a low dose, but usually more than 1mg on average from what I know

wooden schooner
#

I take 1 gummy (i.e. half the recommenced dose) of Olly Sleep ~every night. That's 1.5mg melatonin and 50mg L-theanine. For some reason, the gummy seems to work better for me than taking the same quantities of those things in pills.

#

I've also had great results with Neuro Sleep (melatonin + L-theanine soft drink), but that's more expensive

delicate stream
#

Might be the delivery format? Some things will absorb better into your system

#

Welp, designing a case for my broken watch... Thought I had measurements right, but I was 2mm off, somehow... Despite using calipers XD

dusty citrus
#

drat, sorry that's the case šŸ¤”

#

no pun intended

#

maybe a noob question, do calipers need calibration once in a while?

delicate stream
#

Lol. I don't think so -- mechanical calipers can't lose calibration because they're basically just slidey sticks with lines, and digital ones measure from whatever reference point they start at, not sure if the sensor can lose calibration...

dusty citrus
#

oops i assumed something digital about them šŸ˜†

delicate stream
#

lol

dusty citrus
#

i was so happy when mom handed me down her calipers i didn't know she had. until i tried using it! the measurements begin in a really odd place, not where the object rests against one of the clamps, but like 15mm down the thing. i'm like whyyy?

delicate stream
#

Maybe they were specialty calipers? Some are calibrated so the 0 mark starts somewhere else because there's a base measure that's always being used

dusty citrus
#

i guess they are specialty. i'll have to ask her if she knows what they are meant for. thanks doctor!

delicate stream
#

No problem :D

quartz wren

anyone want to see the scope I'm building?

wary herald
#

Sure

quartz wren
#

CRT out of some old optometry equipment and an ammo can so far, still have to mount the PCB inside the can but the tube mounting is finished

wary herald
#

Ooh, fun

quartz wren
#

going to drive the beam directly from a Pico with PWM for intensity and 16-bit DACs, loaded 8 bits at a time for X and Y deflection

wary herald
#

That's a good idea

quartz wren
#

then I'll normally have my input signals get sent straight to the vertical deflection when in oscilloscope mode and because I am driving the beam directly I can do raster mode, oscilloscope mode, or vector mode

#

but then if I want to sample something into memory it will route through the Pico's ADC's and back out through the vertical deflection buffer

#

and if I just want to display it, I'll have the beam sweep trigger on a programmable voltage after the beam has finished sweeping
