Cost to make is ~$5
Not bad.
No including my time to assemble
PixelWing boards cost ~$17 to make, selling for $39.95
PixelLeaf RP2040 cost ~$11 to make, selling for $29.95
most expensive portion of the PixelLeaf RP2040 are the neopixel which I buy on a reel
The Boarduinos in the picture were built from the bare PCBs that AdaFruit used to sell: a product that doesn't even show up on the website any more, even as "discontinued". https://www.adafruit.com/product/69
Wow
A piece of ada history
Kind of cool š
Sometimes I wish I had the tenacity and drive Ladyada has
Hax
She is so darn inspiring
I wish I had 1/10th her drive and passion
Fervently agreed. I've learned so much from her.
And like 1/100th her engineering skill, lol
I got better at part sourcing because of Desk of Ladyada
And better about trying to be unique with designs because of New Products section of Ask an Engineer
I got better at PCB layout (both technically and in a zen sense) from her tutorials
Yeah
Iāve learned a ton from the community and being able to give back has helped a lot
Navigating the part madness is the easy part for me XD I've had LOADS of practice using the same sort of search systems for PC hardware, so as long as I know the general specs of the part, I can probably find an equivalent... It's knowing all the how to mix parts and actually design circuits I need work with, lol
True
So so true
I had to learn not to be so stringent on what I used in my designs
Wading through the bewildering variety of LEDs on offer to choose just the right ones for a costume prop was an adventure
Yeah
throws NeoPixels at everything
I even bought the fancy optical epoxy to glue them in place from DigiKey, a princely 4 grams of it.
Finding a supplier of sk6812 was a scary journey for me because I had never ordered off Aliexpress before
I found some 199 LEDs per meter LED strip overseas, but $50 for shipping dissuaded me from actually buying any.
Personally I recycle as much old knowledge as possible into everything I do -- why research a whole new solution if you can tweak an existing one? Thus NeoPixels going into most of what I do, lol
[or NeoPixel compatibles]
I did the same trick to use an Arduino port to program a project instead of learning a whole 'nother code development environment (I did ultimately end up building a custom board definition and memory map)
lol
I have no fear, I know exactly what I want to do, and it's a simple design, so I'mma go full steam at it! soonā¢ļø
I started with the 328p which you know is so over done that anyone can make an Arduino board with it lol
So going to something that I had to figure out making my own board definition and bootloader. It was new and I wasnāt sure at all how to accomplish that
Thankfully Adafruit has the resources to make that easy too
And then making a circuitpython definition and adding it to circuitpython.org
I made a 328p board by hand, lol
Or requesting a PID š±
And also learning that joining the USB standards org is expensive
Protip: don't be me, DO NOT hand carve your PCBs. It's dumb. Stop it.
So if anyone wants to sponsor Oak Dev @ $6000 a year lol
Hand carve your own PCBs, you say?
Not quite a filter, RF energy harvesters
I mean, that's a simple one XD I mean with long winding traces... Imagine carving an Arduino Uno by hand
How much powah?
On a good day, I could get the thick end of a microwatt
Ohhh nice
Unless I set the antenna right next to a cell phone
What does one do with a thicc microwatt?
You can see it taking about 4 seconds to accumulate about 60mV in a capacitor, at which point the energy harvesting chip grabs the power and transfers it to another capacitor. When the second capacitor is charged enough, the CPU boots up, does some stuff, and goes back to sleep.
I could run for about half a second a few times a day.
Or a couple seconds once a day!
Then they wanted me to add WiFi. Um, there is simply not enough power available to do that. Then they wanted me to add cellular. That's in the realm of "there will never be that much power available"
Mechanical WiFi!
When I put the antenna a few centimeters from a WiFi router, I could get a 60mV packet in a second and a half!
So what CPU do you use that can actually run on such low power and do anything?
TI MSP430FR series
does a Google
The non-volatile FRAM was a lifesaver too
There's a newer RF430FRL line that's powered by NFC, impressively power efficient.
Yeah, TI is pretty great at low power
I have a chonker MSP430 around here somewhere that I never learned to use...
I found one hiding in a blood glucose monitor, a teeny coin cell about the size of a lentil powers it for two weeks.
Wowzers
The energy harvesting chip was a TI one too: the other vendors' offerings needed like 300mV to do anything.
Here's the board from the glucose monitor: it's about 25mm across
Rather a lot, unless you park one by a radio transmitter or high tension power line.
... would right outside of a big power substation supply a lot of usable RF power?
The fence would probably damp out most of it, unless you held an antenna up over the fence
Hmmm... What if it's just inside the fence?
Guessing these are wide band if a fence will absorb it?
Power substations (in the US) are 60Hz, not really RF: the fence would be a pretty effective shield at that frequency.
ah, I thought they did higher frequencies in addition to voltage for transmission...
More and more transmission is moving to DC these days
60-120Hz depending on where itās going and how for and what part of the grid itās at
Yeah, I don't think they've done any DC work here tho
I thought the Marvel Comics Universe was separate from DC comics?
XD
Technically DC is just AC thatās super stable and only has mV differences in amplitudes
Like 10s of mV.
If you look at a DC supply on an oscilloscope you can see this
And the funny thing about crystal oscillators, they tend to produce more of a sine wave than a square wave
The very high Q of crystals will tend to do this
Load capacitance helps tune the speed and shape
A line resistor will control the drive strength
But itās all AC if you have a fine enough scope
Do batteries have any fluctuations?
They're fairly electrically quiet, but not completely so. The terminal voltage also varies with the temperature and state of charge.
I can see a 60Hz ripple getting thru filtering on an AC-fed power supply, but I figured batteries wouldn't have anything consistent like that
The issue with PCBs is you canāt avoid cosmic background microwave radiation
Muahahahaha
So you can inherit noise inadvertently
There is the diurnal 11.6µHz ripple šļø
Plus with how polluted RF is these days, youāll pick up some of that too
The what now
Since battery voltage varies with temperature, and days are generally warmer than nights, battery voltage will tend to vary with the time of day: this has real world implications in that smoke detectors will tend to start their low battery beep in the middle of the night.
Oh, I didn't know there was a precise frequency of that
Ah makes sense
It's just the reciprocal of the number of seconds in a day
ahh
Did you know that the three gorges dam in China shifted the rotation of the earth and slowed it down by a few milliseconds
I did not, that's a little surprising to me
When the Three Gorges Dam was built, 39 trillion kilograms of water from the Yangtze River built up behind it to 175 meters above sea level. This altered
Sorry it was microseconds not milliseconds
0.06uSec
0.06usec is still a lot all things considered
I mean, yeah XD
Anything we do that's measurable vs. the EARTH is a lot
But there's like... measurable vs. practically different
There's someone at NIST with a title like "Controller of Earth Rotation" on their door: this sort of thing would be very relevant to them.
lol
Yeah haha
Imagine releasing the entire volume of the three gorges dam
I couldnāt imagine how devastating that would be
Speaking of earth rotation, time for me to go to bed
Yeah, about midnight eh?
Yup
Uggghhhh need more tiiiiime
Only ~10pm here
Invent a time machine
I share a timezone with the mad one
I mean, I have one... just... not current access.
Lol
brb need to build more tables
How many IKEA LACK tables is too many IKEA LACK tables?
One of these things is not like the others
So... one of them might be lacking and the others are just LACKing?
help, I accidentally trained my brain to only be productive if I'm listening to psytrance
I don't see the problem
fair lmao
You know what IS a problem?
wha
lmao g'night
Unironically want those bedlamps though
Idk if this is common, but Iāve frequently been thinking about āinformation densityā in all my communication/work-emails lately
Reducing redundant wording, communicating the same points with less words, etc
Sometimes itās almost a game to see how much I can compress various messages
I guess that speaks to how overly-wordy and rambly I am lmao
k
Good morning :)
Few word do good
Lol
I am thinking in an add-on on Discord to kind of put darger to safety tags on people, if a people does something that you consider wrong you put a little dot closer to the more red color in the palette, but you do not block the person, with little by little strange things you keep track on people, that maybe say too many bad words, if a person stopped doing this you put the dot closes to the most blue color.
What do you think?
Blegh, just had to name & shame a seller of cosplay parts
idk, this was my experience: https://twitter.com/TriliWulf/status/1428840085969985539?s=20
Buyer beware: @/KaiborgStudios
My experience:
I paid $500 for all the assembled/sanded parts of "Cyber Anubis". The sanding job is incomplete, but they do smoothen large sections for a cheap $35. The side indents are still REALLY rough- this seems like a print cnfig issue.
1/7
I'm confused, is it a cheap $35 or an expensive $500? Or are those separate services? Similarly with the $145 cut but $55 cutting fee?
(Clarification) Itemized costs
Assembled Helmet Frame: $195, Sanding: $35
Visor: $170, Visor Cut: $55
Inner Visor (hotglue mount): $50
Total: $505
Oh, weird pricing strategy. Got it.
It's honestly frustrating 'cause they're so close to being great. Just tiny tweaks to the design + an open source would fix this for me.
With a better design & public dimensions, I'd happily overlook the cost & build quality 'cause it's such a unique product
Maybe I should do that so I can make more money than them by doing it better
I can understand why they might be reluctant to go open source, but I agree that they should be more responsive, deliver the extra-cost quality you paid for, and it would be nice if they provided dimensions.
Yeah, I do feel like my open-source point is a little shaky.
Dimensions and fixing the problems at least
They're a small business (probs want to secure their profit line), and releasing the models would mean that anybody could print the parts at home for cheaper
But, counterpoint:
they could do what Valve did with the Index!
Provide CAD models, but ONLY of the bits that stuff would attach to
While that would be useful for that subset of users that wants the info and can work with CAD models, it's a surprising amount of effort to do, and generates more customer support calls (even if they state the CAD models are where is, as is, and no support is provided).
Sort of like Canon refusing to provide interface details for their older printers. While it irks me, I can understand their point of view (my main beef is them lying about what operating systems their printers support).
Canon dumb
Yeah, they put me and my 2000 (imaginary) listeners off buying their products in the future.
I did finally find a color printer I actually like, but it doesn't do metal foil like the accursed can't be used Canon (theoretically) does.
You have listeners? :O
I claim I do when I'm talking to customer support lines.
lol
Granted, there are probably a few people who read my blog or watch my youtube vids, but I haven't had actual "listeners" since my college radio days.
And occasional times when I show up in the news for various reasons.
(not meaning to argue, just sharing how it seems in my limited experience) I agree with you for 99% of cases, but this seems a little different. Kaiborg's main customer base is makers/craft-people, and that shows in how much of their website is dedicated to "print finishing tutorials". Combined with the STEEP cost, I'd at least expect SOME maker-focused dimensions/specs.
I'd agree with that: dimensions/specs are a reasonable thing, I'm just thinking that an actual CAD model could be a bit much.
totally, and since they're a small shop, naggy customers would probably feel empowered to demand "I want the model in my specific format!!!!!"
also this is wild, what sort of stuff did they lie about?
They claimed their Selphy line had MacOS support, but it was only partial support: the metal foil printing that was the printer's party piece was only supported for MS-DOS, and not well. I still have the printer and a bunch of media packs for it, that I can't use.
Testing more today on the Bread 2040 āØ
Tested all GPIO and works great so far š
Project Gutenprint does support that printer, but only in a couple of modes. I suspect the foil modes aren't terribly different (presumably additional color planes), but after renting an expensive USB analyzer and trying it with an MS-DOS machine, their software still didn't work and I was unable to get any data or prints, so now I'm out the cost of the printer, plus the media packs, plus the USB analyzer rental, plus the time, effort, and sanity the whole MS-DOS episode cost me.
I may eventually destroy the printer with my solar energy furnace and put the process on youtube.
"Any level of support on any platform counts as 'supported', right?" -- Canon
So my first 8TB Seagate HDD I plugged in immediately gave me a warning of 8 reallocated sectors DX
To quote Hamlet, Act III, Scene iii, line 87: No.
lol
Which USB analyzer did you rent?
Debating if I should test all 4 drives, or just immediately contact the seller... I'm worried because the bubble wrap around the drives in the box didn't really survive, so I'm worried it was shipping damage
I honestly don't remember which one it was: it was a big chonky thing apparently designed for rack mounting, but not in a rack. Bigger than this one for sure: https://www.adafruit.com/product/708
Can you read the S.M.A.R.T. data from the drives? Meh, even if so, I would be chary of trusting those drives now.
Ah, that makes sense.
Chonky drives take a long time to scan...
Been on 10% for like, 45 minutes?
I need pizza rolls
I found this very intriguing
Crazy 3 old ladies.
It is from Greek mitology right?
Iām not sure what you mean
Greek mitology.
Like tales that people used to believe in the past.
In old Greece.
The fates
Indeed the fact that they are mythological women operating on a thread does suggest that they are the fates
I participate a lot of servers in Discord, they are all pretty nice. Discord is such an amazing app. Today I think I talked in more than 7 different servers.
Specially football(soccer) servers, with people from France, England, Germany, Italy, Spain, Mexico,South Korea...
Pretty great conversations, all of them.
Oh gosh I thought you were talking about the article I shared
I thought that said "spicy football"
No. Multiple different subjects.
In diffent channels.
But yes those were the Fates
Brazil...
My physics teacher told us it's okay to be confused, and that confusion is the parent of wisdom
And I think that was pretty neat
I like that.
This is definitely one of the best teachers I've had in my life
I thought I wouldn't like physics, but this man
He's making me want to do work
That is the mark of a top-notch teacher
Being confused can be a great sign that you're actually thinking and trying to process the things being presented, not just absorbing the words to parrot them back later
Ah yes
He told us that when you truly understand something, you don't need to know much about it
I love him
Quote after quote
I had a great physics 1 instructor
It helped I took linear algebra at the same time
Hmm... Unrelated, the PCB Test Points do not fit in the Perma-Proto board, they just fall out
Dang
Thankfully I wasn't planning to use them for that -- I was just going to line a bunch up in it so I can solder wires to them XD
I decided that soldering wires to a bunch to use on things for testing purposes makes more sense than having one of every thing [display, sensor board, etc.] with pins that's dedicated to breadboard use
Hmmm
After a while, pogo pin clips start to be useful
Amazon: āuse our photo service so we can train our ML/AI models and we will give you $15 š ā
Me: āyeah, hard passā
Can't go out because it's too hot outside
I went for an hour long walk and almost melted
The house next door melted and I made a sword minecraft-style
Use their service and simply flood them with dog butts
Yes, perfect plan
Some brick house turned to lava and is still dripping out in the street
I can walk for about 15 minutes before my phone overheats and dies. But I'm good for a couple of hours.
I wanted to make a peltier chips suit but they require 40 amps to lower temperature by 120oF
I take my dog outside and thatās about all I spend outside these days
Antique phone doesn't do so well anymore
I thought of 3D printing an assembly to hold a Peltier cooler on my phone and blow air across it, but then I realized the PLA would melt
Aside from taking my kids to the playground
It seems like if I do such a suit I'll get shocked by 40 amps and die
ABS yo
Acrylic?
I've never attempted printing ABS
The problem with peltier chip is the other side is cooler/hotter than the other side by a good factor
and all the amps required
I don't think there are any Peltier that can do 120° (even the little F ones) in a single stage
I don't have one but I heard of something like 180oC if the other side is cooler by 40oC
The ones I checked on digikey claims they can raise temperature by 60-70oC (150oF ish I think ?)
But I'm just looking at a little one I can shove about 6 amps through into a heatsink + fan
But didn't expect them to require so much amps
thiss one: https://www.lairdthermal.com/datasheets/datasheet-CP14-71-045-L1-W4.5.pdf claims to have a delta of 75oC
That's 70.5°C when it's moving ZERO heat.
Still, I'm hoping to be able to remove heat from the phone fast enough that the phone doesn't shut down and stop when playing a demanding game on a hot day.
Anyway going outside, if I don't make it back was good knowing you all and thanks for teaching me electronics isn't magic that was great š
I don't have access to liquid nitrogen I can pour on me so water is the best I can do
There is this commercial offering, but I sincerely doubt it works: https://www.banggood.com/BlitzWolf-BW-MPR-Semiconductor-Phone-Radiator-Cooler-Heat-Dissipation-Bracket-Cooling-Fan-for-iPhone-12-Pro-Max-for-Samsung-Galaxy-S21-Note-S20-ultra-Huawei-Mate40-P50-OnePlus-9-Pro-p-1876869.html
Fun fact: ICE has better thermal cooling capacity than LN2!
I remember that conversation
Maybe I should try ice cooling my phone. I do have a cold pack and source of ice.
Just be careful of condensation!
That is indeed the problem
Ah yes. Moisture
Maybe a little air circulation loop where the air sheds its moisture at the colder side then cools the phone on the warmer side
A 35°C day is not bearable for me
35°C is no problem for me, but I grew up in a hot and humid climate.
I donāt mind hot
35C is death
Humidity leaves me soaked. I sweat a lot
Which i guess means my body is naturally good at cooling
Been like 25-29C here and I've been dying
I was out in 50°C dry air and that was too hot for me. It was like standing in front of an oven. When the wind blew, it made me hotter instead of cooler.
I want like 0C
that's good when the sweat can actually evaporate, but it can't with 98-100% humidity like here
No thanks, I'm no good at cold (no surprise, considering how happy I am in the heat)
Yeah, I lived in NC for a few years
I dislike hot and humid
35°C dry is very reasonable compared to 35°C wet
Growing up in Florida, it was warm and humid, but nothing like the sweltering miasma that is DC in the summer.
I was in Ft Lee VA in 2012
Military training during the dead of summer
We had four weeks straight of 49°C heat index
And then it ended with a week of tornado sirens
Unrelated: yay, it worked!
Yeee
we were hotter than riyadh, saudi arabia today accounting for "feels like"
also whee, I've had one of the MOSFETs on my test MOSFET board cycling hooked up to a benchtop power supply for a while now. nothing seems to have exploded. nothing seems to be on fire.
( and more importantly nothing is getting way too hot )
Yay no unwanted fires and/or explosions!
I'm very interested in getting an energy gathering piezoelectric chip just to experiment
I should maybe figure out a way to intentionally set something on fire
I used to be fascinated by fire when I was young
stopped when I realized my clothes would smell like smoked salmon for weeks afterwards
Also I once went in a fire to save a cat when I was 11yo which was pretty stupid
I love fire, but you gotta respect it
wonder if I can use model rocket igniters to light candles
wasn't even my cat
Stupid, but brave
Lol, not for long
The fire was small though but the fire department / cops were pretty angry
I just need enough fire to catch the wick >_>
Also I never told the owner family it was me I just casually dropped it near them
They did the good cop/bad cop routine though with the fireman who had me visit the fire station with my dad after it was over (they had me stay because they had put the yellow tape between me going in and out) so they said I was part of the scene. And they especially spent a long time explaining all the protection they had against fire and how important it was etc
Oh, brain read "as candles" before... sure you can do that XD
I've seen videos of popping balloons with overheating resistors
[ also now I'm running my test board over the safe current I calculated >_> ]
is it true that capacitors can blow up with acid splashing if enough voltage/amps/watt are passed into them ?
I think I might actually be getting warm now
we had an intro course to electronics in a physics course once and I had to physically stop someone from putting more volts into it with a bit of force because they didn't want to ask the teacher who had warned us before
You should get a FLIR so you know
I need to finish and sell this board and have lots of people buy them so I can afford a FLIR
basic FLIR is around 800 us$ but like 200P
Yep. It's probably not quite so dramatic but they can pop and with some force
I'm using the "stick my finger on it and see if it hurts" method
I defended my actions by actions by saying I was afraid of being splashed by acid so I could use a bit of low self-defense and it seemed fine but the person wouldn't speak to me after that
i was a bit annoyed that the teacher had warned us about it 5 minutes before and they still did it
worst things I've done is burnt off a tiny bit of my fingerprint by touching the soldering iron tip on accident, and had an LED explode in my hand when I accidentally plugged into direct 3V3
basic flir is basically 80x40 or something like that, very little range
You can get phone cameras [plug into your phone, Android or iPhone] at reasonable prices
not worth it imho, better save for the 3000-4000$ models
I got a CAT S60 phone for $200, totally worth it
that's fake though no? afaik phones don't have uv/thermal lenses. I mean if they do it's not even big enough for the law of physics
The CAT S60 has a FLIR camera built in. You can get FLIR add-ons for any phone with Lightning or Type C
Just like my scale that claim to pass a current to measure fat in the body etc but the electrodes aren't even connected so it's just for the show and they just apply a formula
They're 100% legit FLIR modules
I though you meant the apps who claim to do flir on normal phones
No, I said plug into your phone, lol
but they just apply a random shader
You can get older models for cheaper, and they're perfectly fine if you just want to see hotspots on boards or know about what temp a thing is
4800 pixels.... not much
You don't really need much
that's like old hercules text screen of the 1980s, 80x80 pixels
I do if I want temperature measurement 5 miles off like A-10 thunderbolt II š š¤£
They don't make 14MP FLIR modules
The modules aren't really meant for far off stuff, more for things right in front of you
Drones gotta have distance
If I had money this would be my first purchase
that... is really not that bad
The nice thing about the module vs. the phone with a FLIR is that the module can move between phones, whereas with the in phone... Yeah.
I still have my CAT S60, but now it lives in airplane mode and serves only as a thermal camera and flashlight
although if I really want to abuse this board, I need a power supply capable of higher current output
because I maxed the power supply w/o maxing the FET specs š¦
I've always been fascinated by electronics that were once military. At least you can talk about it vs if you are in the military you can't even talk about intelligence in the open because it would "confirm" it
Seeing things my eyes can't see is a general area I want to experiment with
I was always fascinated by the idea of radio "cameras"
I've seen a video where someone made a detector that could "see" in wifi. It was a somewhat directional wifi antenna on a motorized mount that scanned a few hundred points and made a crude image out of the relative signal strengths
Caveat being that it took something like 2 hours to make 1 image
What would it be like if our eyes could see more colors? We may never be able to answer that, but we can build devices that can do the work for us. Over the last three weeks we've been building a DIY radio telescope tuned to 2.44 Ghz which is right in the middle of the wifi band. With it we hoped to take a picture of a building and see all the w...
I've toyed with the idea of making something that'd be like that for magnetic fields, but it wouldn't be nearly as long range.
Anything is visible spectrum if you adjust your frequency range enough
gota be careful with microphone in public in canada though because the law changed
spying/intercept when I was young like 20 years ago used to be is you used the information or communicated it to someone else
but now intercept is if you listen to a conversation with an expectation of privacy in which you aren't one of the intended recipient
even neutrinos? š
with a large enough arduino I guess
my biggest electronics accident is pressing my case on my computer a bit too strongly to make it fit inside it's holes and the plastic(?) glass broke and sliced my hand
š¦ can arduino help ?
Not this time
The maker of my helmet parts may not provide mounting dimensions...
But I have tape, string, and a pair of calipers
It's terrible & not useable for professional work, but at least this gives me a way to design an inner display mount
yay reverse engineering
This is what string theory is about š
This is best post of the week I have read
Weird question, but does what I'm trying to convey with this come across?
i really thought spi would have been more complex than "choose a CS line"
I mean, I've had difficulties with it in the past
no idea what ur planning there
@static flare Hi Xenia, what do you mean by convey?
This is an outline of the W from the Hollywood sign, just wanted to see if the biggest issue with how it looks is noticeable and obvious from the measurements
I did not get it, can you explain in another way?
ahhh
The left arm of the W isn't parallel, where the right one is, and the angles in the whitespace at the top is different, it just makes it look... wonky
sounds like a warner brothers move
sadly havent ever seen the sign so i cannot be of assistance
It was originally put up as an advertisement for Hollywoodland, then the land was removed and they rebuilt it some time ago, where they kept the same mistake
when your idea is to be disney land but all your tourists are actors
Huh, that's the first time I've seen a 13V capacitor (this is in a turn signal flasher, so it's a bit underrated, as engine running voltage in most cars is 13.8 - 14.4V).
It looks like masonry, I hate masonry, I never liked it, since I was a kid.
Once I bought 3 chemistry books online
My father actually, to me.
And the guy gave it for free (and they were expensive), I think because my father told him I was studying for one of the hardest exams of the country, etc.
When it arrived at my house there was a masonry card.
And then after a few time, I gave it away to others with the card.
I felt weird with the card. I did not liked it at all.
Actually it is not hate, it is just I do not like it at all.
Hey, I know exactly where that picture is from
And I never will like it, or anything similar.
I do appreciate youtubers with nicely kept fingernails
And I will never ever participate things like these (masonry, illuminanti and all the others similar)
Such shock and surprise, I watched that video earlier today
Also, I saw an LGR video about in tower CRTs and I was curious if mine would fit, and the answer is yes
It's basically nearly exactly the right dimensions it needs to be, the only issues are power and video, it uses mains and composite, but that's not too much of an issue
Can't wait for bioelectronics and being able to tune my cat with chips to generate revenues so they are useful for once
But knowing the feline conspiracy I know they already have contingency plans to prevent this
Me and my father made this shelf, he bought the screws, the wood, made the technical drawing, and helped me a lot to precision parts in physical manufacturing. I used the drilling machine a lot in this shelf.
We just made it. It is not finished.
Cats are useful... You simply do not understand their ways.
This is to be expected of a human.
I mean the tail is really great for a wifi antenna or an electromagnet
I wouldn't be looking for any projects if that was available vs some boring car kits all with the yellow extremely cheap wheels š¦
lol
That cat with some fur would make the perfect spy
I meant masonry.
This. I hate these things. ā
Ohhh, that makes more sense, I thought you were talking about something else
It is just an unfortunate coincidence that me and my father worked with wood and I said the word mansonry, it is not related at all. It is just an homonym word.
Masonry in construction refers to concrete and brickwork. Carpentry refers to building with wood.
do you have a reference for this?
I am somewhat interested in this aspect of biblical interpretation
And that was how the Adafruit Bible Study group started
mainly in historical perspectives on how morality differed in past societies vs. today / each other [edit: apparently this is called comparative ethics]
"I am the AdaFruit, the beginning and the end. I will give unto him that is athirst of the electrons of the electricity and magnetism, at reasonable price and we ship to Canada."
Amen
Amen XD

nice library.
It comes from the words used for āhonorā which translates roughly to meaning āto bring high regard or respectā
Ok, sounds like you're working in English in modern times, not, e.g., Hebrew many centuries ago
Iirc, even child rearing manuals from the early 1900s are pretty straight-up obedience oriented
Iām going off of the rough Aramaic to English translation
Obedience and honor are not the same in ancient Hebrew or Aramaic
Nice, I'll look it up but, do you have the words on hand?
Here is a pretty clear article on the topic from a Jewish perspective
To make the case for the Torah, I can think of no better verse with which to begin than the fifth of the Ten Commandments: āHonor your father and your mother so that your days be lengthened on the land that I give you.ā Proper understanding ā and living by ā this commandment is indispensable to making a good society. And to properly understand i...
Oh man that article looks great. I was expecting a modern interpretation but this person looks willing to ruffle some feathers
And I see the word is kbd (apologies for the terrible improvised input method)
Thanks!
If you go mostly on the opposite of honor in the original tongue, you see itās to curse
You can identify the context isnāt necessarily to be obedient but act in a way to be honorable and respectful in way that āadds to their healthā
^you guys are jewish ?
I love jews š they are so similar to christians.
but I will not talk about religion.
nah didn't want to talk about religion it's just the last time I asked that IRL it became awkward as if I was going to say something offensive next when I was working in a convenience store. I could see they wanted to know something about the coffee but wouldn't dare to ask.
So I just pointed the coffee was pareve and they really opened up and we traded so I could get a few shekels (didn't have any in my coins collection back then) with me getting a good value I guess
People can be weird... I don't think there's anything wrong with talking about religion, just fighting over it. It's all good if both parties are seeking knowledge and understanding of the other's views
and it reminded me of that, they though I was jewish but I explained it I just know a lot of things and knew what they were looking for š
Lol
could see a big breath of relief when they realized the interaction would be positive
I think Jewish folk can be more in guard because they tend to be targets more than, say, Christians
At least in certain countries
Or certain parts of certain countries anyway
only one i could find quickly
We used to have open hannukah here until certain incidents and the local community is now much more guarded
Half value coins are fascinating
I tried to reach because I had questions about the torah and wanted to ask questions but now you almost need a referral
That's a shame... I had thought about going to a temple a couple years ago to ask some questions, I guess I might have met resistance on that
There's a synagog on the corner of my street, and they've been vandalized a lot over the years, it's a great shame
yeah same and now they have security close and watchers ahead of the way
Mhmm... They have someone in the building 24/7 from what I hear now, cameras all over
Whereas Christian churches are popping up like wildflowers, people literally going door to door looking for new congregants
Yeah I don,t want to convert though just interested about the country and the why of some policies and understand the torah more
Yeah, I'm generally curious too. I've studied other faiths on and off for decades, just because I like to understand different people and cultures
I also find that if you says you follow all abrahamic religions peoples have no ideas what to argue about š
Lol
Because almost nobody expect that
Well, I'm off for a walk... TTYL!
cya
There must be so many great and rare books there.
Electronics engineering books...
They should put all these books online ā
Actually all libraries in the whole planet should put all books online.
For example, simulate the of borrow books online. Like 7 online books avalible for every title and you can keep it for a week.
Then you treat books like physical ones.
So the author could still receive a bit of money selling books.
Nice thing with digital rentals is they can be automatically revoked instead of potentially lost forever like physical books
Yes, but only 7 books avalible to each title to everyone, to get it when there is 0 books you'll have to wait.
Yeah, I don't think that artificial scarcity isn't something I've seen... Certainly an interesting idea for a library
It is great so it can protect the work of many author.
Not sure about that... If it's digital and available, it's rippable.
I think digital libraries have to pay a license for each copy of the book, so if you limit a book to 7 people at a time, the library pays for 7 copies essentially
I do not think libraries keep paying for the authors as there are people taking books.
The idea is to literally simulate a library.
Then no downloads, you can only read online.
Not keep paying, it's like a physical book. The library pays for 7 physical books and people lend them. Same for digital - the library pays for 7 "licenses" then they can loan it to people
I have been using study groups like this a lot in COVID, it is pretty great. Sometimes a lot of people turn on the cameras and we see each other studying. The chat is usually very active in the study breaks. Pretty nice.
Did I ever tell you guys about my amber alert when I visited manhattan ?
I know libraries here have online versions of books that you can read in browser and such
It's pretty easy to do screen recording and pull characters, but there are people who steal anything that's not nailed down
I'll stay on for all night long....
So I did a dumb... Connecting Ortho snap-apart bits back together, forgot they zig-zag for the NeoPixels... DX
Thankfully it was only 6 segments and not a whole side
Now I sleep and reflect on my dumb
I do that a lot as well š
lol
Just spent a while modelling something, I'm surprised how much I am enjoying it
https://www.instagram.com/davidkahnsings/
I just feel like this should be uploaded by itself too, I am proud of it.. Lol. This stairwell is amazing also, the best natural I've found EVER.
Full keyboard, here I come! Macro key section done... Just gotta fix the rest of my mixed up keys DX
niiiice
I only had to take it apart and resolder once XD
Realized I have a potential problem again -- I snapped up my Ortho snaps forgetting they're zig-zagged, and broke up random rows to fill in individual keys, so now I've got out -> out rows...
ohno
Yup. But I think I can adjust in software, I'll just have a wire running from one end of a row to the next
So thankfully 2 of the 3 drives I've tested from my 4 new drives appear alright... I was afraid they'd all be bad
working on the PixelLeaf RP2040. So far no smoke! Just have to fix my circuitpython files to make it work right
It's good when you don't release the magic smoke
yeah haha
oh nice. So that's an LED array that uses an RP2040 as the driver, which is overkill but it doesn't matter because the RP2040 costs pennies?
I thought RP2040 was always $1
... Although skerr getting them for less and selling them for $1 a piece would make more sense than at cost sales
technically $1 is still 100 pennies. But yeah, as far as I know it's always $1
is it that RPi is intentionally eschewing a business practice (bulk discounts) that companies typically use to turn a higher profit?
It also has some Stemma QT for sensors
What sort of hoops do you have to jump through to get that sort of price?
Order a minimum of 500 pieces from RPi directly
That's not bad, only $250 there
Yeah, then $30 shipping internationally
International shipping for $30? Also not bad
Yeah, it was a pretty sweet deal
But it was an 8 week lead in those 500
Longer leads on the 3k4 reels
Heh, get some from Digi-Key for your prototyping, and then from RPi for your production.... and then later prototyping since you already have a pile
Yeah, I started with free samples from RPi back in March
Then ordered a reel in May
Oh, good, so I'm not taking money out of your pocket if I buy them from you XD
Funding projects even š
Maybe we can make a deal if I start producing boards XD
Lol maybe

Is the iPhone 5s worth repairing and using in 2021?
Use case: phone calls, video calls (maybe), WhatsApp/Telegram/Slack/Discord, casual reading, time killer arcade games (maybe) and other basic smartphone functions.
I love the small form factor but am too broke to buy the iPhone 12 Mini or the iPhone SE. Also, I want to try out iOS, being a long time Android user.
My only apprehension is whether they still do any software updates and updated versions of apps even work, and the hardware's capable of daily driving.
hardware is alright at that stuff, device no longer gets updates tho
most apps will support the resolution but there wont be security updates
prolly for the better tbh
dont want apple snooping around my messages and images by force
iPhones aren't worth using on release, so.... Rhetorical question?
If you have one already... Depends on the issue. Battery? Sure, cheap enough. Anything else? No, you can get a refurbished iPhone 8 for a reasonable price -- still gets updates, faster processor, I think a higher resolution screen... Just better. I got one for $200 like a year ago
Hahaha no, just had one device lying around with a broken screen and my current phone is starting to bail out on me so...
Only the screen's badly shattered, but will have to see for other things. Will sure look into it, thanks!
I wish my condominium/apartament/house had a bigger area do I could do running/walk sport here.
without going to the outside.
Iām pretty excited the Pfizer vaccine is FDA approved š
Iām seeing still negative things like ālists of dangerous chemicals current FDA approvedā so probably not likely to change many minds š£
It was a WWE gif of some wrestler beating Will Ferrellās toe
Oof
It said speedy recovery on it lol
Decades ago, I managed to do the same. The friend with me came back over to me, and was like "Whatever, you just stubbed your toe, everyone says they broke it......" and then looked at my foot, and stopped short. My toe was also entirely dislocated. I broke the third bone from the top. š
Lol
I went to the hospital for that one. Sigh.
Oof... I've dislocated toes several times, but not broken
Age 4 and 7
Brb, gonna get food
The first break could have been a whooooole lot worse
Had to have surgery to correct it
My $10k right arm
I have lasting nerve damage from that one which I didn't know about until a decade later when I put on Vibram FiveFingers for the first time and was like "why can't I feel this toe...."
Yikes
I have nerve damage in my right pinky that causes phantom feelings in both tips of my pinky fingers lol
Referred sensations!
Yeah
š§
2nd dose started osteoarthosis for me, basically pizer can cause joint pain so it started a flare up. Public health didn't take the report because they already knew it could cause that and transfered me to a nurse. From discussing with doctor it's probably trauma related due to playing soccer 10 years ago and having to stop because of a stupid collission during a low intensity practice with a barrel
Yeah, joint swelling and pain is pretty common for covid vaccines and most vaccines really. Iāve never seen it extreme but definitely something to keep in mind
Was extreme for me unfortunately 8/10 on my personal pain scale. Was 3 weeks ago and now I don't even need the painkillers anymore
Iām glad it wasnāt worse than 8/10
Unfortunately itās impossible to avoid side effects with medicine and vaccines.. but at least for a vast majority of people things are relatively mild
Iām expecting round 2 to kick my butt
I have Ehlerās Danlos Syndrome so Iām anticipating bad joint pain
Some GSM(smartphone chip companies) , I think, all have nice programs to non-rich people like me. I can use internet's WhatsApp for free forever.
So I can make video calls, etc...
There are also some other apps that may be included like Facebook.
So I can use the 4G for free.
It's great in possible emergencies.
Or who knows what.
For these special apps.
There are 4 Chip companies here in Brazil: Claro,Tim,Oi and Vivo. I think all have this program. You just need to buy an about 2 dollars chip and it is open to everybody.
Pro-tip: When it's free or extremely cheap, you are the product for sale
ie: your personal info, so don't be naive
I stopped participating to sweeptakes on food because I know they sell off my info for 6-7$ while I get 1/1m odds to win anything
For that price I,d rather have a chance at winning over 1m$ or even the above 50m$ jackpot and not be worried to sell my info to dangerous scammers
these companies are not close to the best chip companies in the world
or close to the last
So they're in the middle??
They can not be all in the middle.
And possibily if there are a pair number of smartphone chip companies, there is not a company in the middle.
What just happened? Watch the official teaser trailer for #SpiderManNoWayHome, exclusively in movie theaters December 17. @SpiderManMovie https://t.co/S12nYB27nB

For the marvel fans
I wasnāt expecting Dr Strange in the movie
Me either
An even number. In portugese even= par and par = pair but pair != even.
This is super cool
Who needs PIO when youāve got a whole damn core? Running a HUB75 display from a @Raspberry_Pi RP2040 Core1 clocked at 300MHz because why not?
Core0 is handling the per pixel HSV to RGB for this effect. https://t.co/F5ZzGoKCy5
I have phantom feelings and it drives me insane
Unrelated, I installed stress because I don't have enough of that in my life
You know, I really ought to try and make a Doc Ock costume at some point.
I tend to go to cons with a backpack full of photo gear and I could just mount the arms on the backpack with a cover.
They properly released the trailer then?
It does say "watch the official trailer" :P
Yup
Time to dust off my Dr. Strange costume
Thanks!
Hey folks! Iām running a contest on Twitter to find a new sticker design for my packaging goodies. To enter, simply share your design on this tweet on twitter. The prize is an ESP32-S2 powered PixelWing! š
https://mobile.twitter.com/oakdevtech/status/1430303913845137418
Not a logo
oh ok, I am barely just now reading it
Just a fun sticker
Elaborate
Something thatās electronics focused and has the letters āODTā on it
'sticker'
like a colored, animated GIF type sticker
or like, a single color vinyl sticker
digital sticker
analog sticker
etc
Physical sticker like you would put in with physical product you sell as like āgoodiesā or marketing type stickers
Nice!
I have saved approximately $100,000 by finding discarded eCigs and recovering the batteries from them
Dunno what to do with the sensor thing and heaters...
A surprising variety of throwaway items contain concealed rechargeable cells
It's crazy!
The heaters are useful for cosplay fog effects
And a lot of eCigs are like, 400-600mAh!
Ohhhh, fog... I didn't think about that!
Any guides to do this?
Presumably, but I'm not in a position to check right now
It's cool, I need to go to bed anyway XD
...if you wanted to cosplay as Cloud Computing, $100,000 worth of discarded eCigs would be a good start.
sensor and heater = make micro printer š
@real falcon what about motors and all that jazz? you mean print with our bare hands?š
yup. or maybe just 3d pen lol
i like it! though whoever 3d prints by hand could have fumes go right their way, so ventilation is a must.
yeah not issue with pla or petg, but otherwise yeah
š¤£
I never thought of that!
that's a good idea
my brain is in overload..
so i designed a handheld with video out and a few io extra's for expansion.
i opted for a esp-pico d4 with a popular 320 x 240 lcd.
but i made sure i can decouple data lines using a trick with powering down a cheap level shifter.
so far graphical performance is good and using the spi ram is a life saver.
however now i'm looking at the sound and the dos sound blaster era leaves much to be desired in terms of audio quality and speed.
someone suggested i try a find a cheap popular midi synth + mp3/aac chip to handle music so the DAC can focus on playing samples while the the audio chip focuses on playing music and freeing the cpu from this task or even a chip that can handle samples.
however i feel this is overkill unless i can find a popular chip.
I'm exaggerating a little, but yeah, they're all over! Just avoid ones that look like they were flattened, a lot of cells have damage. Dented can be okay, just be careful!
I made the infinity simble today running/walking. On purpose.
hahaha awesome
Actually, I am not that cool, I tried to draw the number 8.
I am sorry the imprecision.
Matrix resurections project could be cool
@dusk oracle enginoob here, i vouch for separating audio processing from your board to do video and so on. i work with game maker studio and they set it up similarly where the audio engine runs alongside the sandbox. couldn't help but see that correlation lol
@dusk oracle here is a board that might help? https://www.adafruit.com/product/1381
WOW you guys š¤£š¤£ best thrift store $5 ever 𤣠wonder if I can hack it?
@late fulcrum you can try to style me with infinity simble, but I garantee you, I have no style, or anything similar to style. I am a square. ā a complete one. It is impossible to style me, or anything of the infinite others similar. Literally. It will be like this forever. Probabily (I hope so).
I can't participate Show and Tell today , I made another commitment and I forgot this one :/
Well, I am definitivelly not perfect.
And I am also definitivelly not the opposite of perfect.
Does Adafruit sponsor college engineering teams or clubs?
You should ask that in #live-broadcast-chat to get answered on the show!
I had a handheld one of those when younger. That projector is really cool
This style
I have that one!
I wonder if mine's still around here somewhere
I remember a few time ago when I was reading at KhanAcademy's website an interview with a very talented programmer.
Who was a programmer and also was a The Walking Dead zombie's author.
(Notes: He could be a programmer, a software developer, a hardware engineer, etc. I do not remember exactly, he also could be a zombie's author from other zombie series, The Walking Dead is the first that comes to my mind, etc.)
Different.
Just heard a loud lightning strike that shook the house, and now I donāt have power
Oh dear
Welp
I had that one too and it always blew my mind!!! Especially when everything else around me was windows xp haha it was SIRI before SIRI š
I had that a few months ago, after the lightning arrestor on my pole failed and hadn't been replaced. Lost a phone, phone interface, television, TiVo, DSL filter, and computer speakers.
I was able to repair the DSL filter.
Gonna see if I can circuit bend the audio output, maybe replace a few LEDS with different colors, I do see some vented cap fluid so, some cleanup haha, and maybe a hidden stemma magnetometer or Hall effect to bounce the spin data to a nearby qt pi š
It is very rare lighting strikes where I live, but I was reading about lightining rod a few months ago. A university put a lot of different lightining rods and a fuse(to detect the lightining. Creative) to test what shape of lightining rod was the best to be hit by a lighting strikes.
There was a lot of very beautiful equations in the article.
Since Benjamim Franklin (the lightining rod's creator) lightining rod is quite the same.
In the end there was a shape that showed to be the best lightining rod, but not so much better than the others. And of course I can not ignore other natural factors that could have made this "best lightining rod" the "best lightining rod" of the text.
hello everyone i am new to this discord as well as in electronics so i would like to know what are good electronic projects with only tht components (I already made an audio amp )
You should buy a lightining rod.
Unfortunately that won't save you most of the time, usually it's lighting hitting transformers or power lines elsewhere that cause outages
Lol
What you need is a grounding rod pounded 2m into the ground
A large one too with chonky wire going from your box to the ground and a large ESD ring on your I coming line
I had one job where basically all I did was pound 1.5m grounding rods into the ground and then attach a 2āo wire from the rod (buried 6ā in the ground) to the metal frame of a natural gas well meter building
Right: a "halo" or "Ufer" ground with multiple grounding rods and a low-impedance path to it (6 inch copper sheet is good for this), along with spike suppressors (Polyphasor sells some good ones) on all the cables going into a building, will let you operate and your equipment survive even a direct lightning strike.
That doesn't help if the transformer 2 blocks away gets hit XD
I mean, itāll help not fry your panel in those events when it sends a massive surge down the line
That's what the line surge buffer outside is for, they have them on the pole for each house
RIP
Well, I've got the big line buffer outside, chonk main breaker, line filters on some lines inside, power conditioners on certain lines, UPS for all computers and equipment, as well as surge protectors.... I might be overboard already XD
Lol
I had a strike here. I was at the computer late at night, it went flash; bang; black, faster than I could type that, although a little slower than displaying it. I was sitting here at my computer and the sequence was: all external windows lit up brighter than direct sunlight, then a bang that rattled all the windows and shook the house, then the lights went out (it technically wasn't full dark, the computer and monitor were on a UPS); all in a fraction of a second. I was the only house affected, so when talking to the electric company it wasn't an "emergency" so they put it on the next days "urgent" list. A tech showed up the next morning and showed where he could see the evidence of the strike, it had blown the fuse to my house, but before he reset it he had to check that the ground wire it had followed to "earth" was still good.
@late fulcrum @viscid folio @night crescent it maybe beautiful in design?
I partly lost power this morning when my mom uses her hair dryer... That, a 3D printer, AC, and a computer were too much for it, lol. Thankfully the computer and printer were on a UPS
I am chaos
lol
What do y'all do with the ends of Ortho snap-apart boards?
have yet to buy one. can't wait to try squeezing them into a pc keyboard š
I'm making a split keyboard :D
sweet! are you using two separate 5x6's?
Three of them XD QWERTY, broke them to do a standard layout, full numpad and all
i hope to see a pic sometime š the usually empty space between the arrow keys and home/end/etc is begging for 5 keys, almost like another numpad
I'm thinking about bringing the arrows against the right side letters part, then squeezing the whole PrntScrn/home/end/pages all into a x2 segment there
that's a lotta keys! i hope to somehow swap or rewire my kb's "function/fn" key for something else.
I think it's gonna be ~120 keys
oh ok. sounds awesome nonetheless. best of luck!
Thanks :D
hey i remember you were looking around for custom keycap places the day i joined. did you get your caps figured out?
I think I'll need to print and/or cast custom
oh sorry to hear! well not to judge, just a lot of time and effort instead of asking for it done is all. did you print any caps? sorry if i'm being nosy! i should be working anyway š
Lol, it's cool. This is entirely a "because I want to" project, I just want the experience XD I have printed some caps, made some optimizations, so I could print a full set if I needed to. But if you need to work, you should work :P
oops i'm relating, meant no harm
Lol, it's cool
are you sure?
I mean the drive is gonna catch fire so I guess it's actually hot
ah ok, and i was thinking climate change, yea, flames all round but this coffee is good
Lol
trying to figure how he could have an adafruit powered water pump under that hat and err find a source
XD
speaking of may i ask where these memes are from? is there a sort of memehub?
never got into them to be honest. but i can animate stuff so if they can be uploaded custom, dunno why i haven't made some
I just use GIF search in Discord, and know the ones I use by exposure or they're close enough to my keyword search and I like them. That one is called "this is fine". KnowYourMeme can tell you a lot about memes
Memes are... Complicated. Most are spread by someone initially creating/sharing, some people like it, take it, share it with friends, maybe tweak it, rinse and repeat many many times over
lol ok, thank you for the meme help! never noticed the search bar up top til now..
and what's this gif button at the bottom here do?
Haha, you're welcome. I speak meme pretty fluently
so it looks like one can't upload their own gif, only searchable from the built in repo?
You can upload to Tenor or Giphy or whichever one you're using, but not within Discord
You can upload .gif files to Discord as well but they won't go to Tenor/Giphy, they stay on Discord servers. They also have to stay under file size limit.
Waiting the day to go to the oftamologist, my glasses broke, until there I'll be using these glasses :P.
A half glasses. In the local farmer's fair today these glasses went to the ground more than one time. I am sure the new ones will arrive before my practical driving license exam.
hey guys, question, what jobs do you guys think are suitable for fresh EE graduates?
im currently job hunting to fill in the time, but most of the jobs are either being industrial technicians, repairmen, or supervisors
The reason why they're not really what im looking for is :
- i have no experience or knowledge on industrial machinery
- i have made a vow to myself in front of others that i won't be stuck in some dirty repair shack cuz it looks so depressing
- supervisors are a high levelled job, i dont have experience in that
no offense to those in the repair field tho, sorry
One 1 glasses will arrive, not 2.
I drawn a 9 on track & field today.

Yay~
FPGA engineers, analog design engineers, RF engineers, field applications engineers
Apply to Texas Instruments, they have college fresher EE focused rotation programs
What school did you graduate from?
Yesss
ITS (Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember)
I take it that is in India?
Indonesia
Close. Okay
hahah
I'll finally have cheap GPS!
Yeah look for fresher roles at bigger international firms
See if there are semi fabs around you
Look for fresher process or test engineer roles as well
But definitely donāt constrain yourself to repair or technician roles. While those are perfectly fine jobs, it would be like using a blender to stir coffee š
Your school should have like career services or help for students and alumni looking for jobs
aight, thx
In my house, tables is shelves... IKEA LACK tables are amazing. $5-15 depending on sales, stackable, light-weight but rather strong -- perfect for stacking to make shelves, or a taller table with storage for a 3D printer, or even an enclosure if you print some brackets and have some acrylic!
I just build my own shelves and such
@jovial swift face frame cabinets arenāt all that bad to build... even it you make squirlley cuts on your table saw
Factory edge out!
Weee custom
just mangled a pico
still works
uploaded blink to test it and it's happily blinking away
no clue how as I had a razor blade between its layers on accident
yeah it looks like the razor blade barely went in, but from the angle I was trying to work it off the board from, it looked like it sliced halfway through the board
but uh...I had it anchored on one side with loops of wire....
that were soldered in
with another pico on the other side that they were also looped through
so yeah...nasty bit of rework but I should still be able to use this pico maybe
at least the USB host pads are fully intact
if nothing else I can use it as a test bed for abusing the pico
it clearly can take the abuse
will get pics of how the module looks when I get to my phone (it's out in my shop)
What were you doing with the razor anyway? XD
luckily the other pico managed to escape unharmed even though I had to get a razor blade between the one I mangled and the board they were both attached to in order to cut the loops of (solid core) wire
initially I was using it to get between the pico and the board while desoldering as I don't have any solder wick or a solder sucker or a desoldering iron
because the other side of the pico was just surface mounted
if I had solder wick I could've just wicked the solder from around the loops and bent them out straight again but no
it kept pooling because surface tension and I couldn't get enough purchase to bend all the wire loops out
so the razor blade it was
at which point I said screw it I'll just mangle this pico to save the one on the other side
but they both still work so I'm happy with the result
Working good XD
I'm making a game console with urbit integration
As you can see some stuff isn't going so well
F
Ohhh yeah, Adafruit order was dropped at the door RIGHT as I was headed upstairs after lunch! Talk about great timing!
Oh my gosh, these ultimate GPS modules are SO SO TINY AND ADORABLE
SO CUTE
... now I need to figure out how to attach it to something
Ohhh man, very glad UPS came when they did and I saw, it started POURING
And my box would have been soaked
I see you there gamers nexus modmat
is this pen that one where you can draw a circuit in a paper?
Yup
This one is better to me.
I think the pen is more conductive, and it's easier to control, but the paint works pretty well
brain surgery is easy if you know what you're doing š looks good!
Lol š yeah the problem is fixed with your brain sir! Really why is my right eye twitching now?
What does Adafruit company smells like, inside? Does it have a default perfume?
It smells like new products, or something like this? Or like big electrical devices?
Probs smells like science
Electrical smoke most likely
not true.
What makes you think it wouldnt?
All that solder melting n such is gonna burn the boards to some degree
I just took melatonin to fix my screwed sleep schedule
Probably not the best idea. But melatonin...no way it can be harmful right
That is the most common use of melatonin supplements afaik, and very much not harmful
You'd need an insane amount to be harmful
To kick the sleep schedule back into place I'd recommend 3ā5mg, for regular use / trouble sleeping perhaps 1mg
Afaik, doses higher than 5mg are just not useful
I think it has to like 100-1000x that to be dangerous
(Also I'm not a @delicate stream, ask your GP š)
Yeah, ask your GP what dose is right for you. Many people are in the 0.5-5mg camp, but some need like 10mg or more... it CAN really screw your sleep cycle up if you take too much, but that's really about it unless you're taking very high doses for a long time [which isn't really well researched]
I recall hearing that most effective dose range according to most studies is less than 1mg, but the OTC supplements are more than that because of some stupid patent thing. Do you know if that's true?
Not sure -- I haven't looked too much into it, I just know it can be highly effective and usually only needs a low dose, but usually more than 1mg on average from what I know
I take 1 gummy (i.e. half the recommenced dose) of Olly Sleep ~every night. That's 1.5mg melatonin and 50mg L-theanine. For some reason, the gummy seems to work better for me than taking the same quantities of those things in pills.
I've also had great results with Neuro Sleep (melatonin + L-theanine soft drink), but that's more expensive
Might be the delivery format? Some things will absorb better into your system
Welp, designing a case for my broken watch... Thought I had measurements right, but I was 2mm off, somehow... Despite using calipers XD
drat, sorry that's the case š¤
no pun intended
maybe a noob question, do calipers need calibration once in a while?
Lol. I don't think so -- mechanical calipers can't lose calibration because they're basically just slidey sticks with lines, and digital ones measure from whatever reference point they start at, not sure if the sensor can lose calibration...
oops i assumed something digital about them š
lol
i was so happy when mom handed me down her calipers i didn't know she had. until i tried using it! the measurements begin in a really odd place, not where the object rests against one of the clamps, but like 15mm down the thing. i'm like whyyy?
Maybe they were specialty calipers? Some are calibrated so the 0 mark starts somewhere else because there's a base measure that's always being used
i guess they are specialty. i'll have to ask her if she knows what they are meant for. thanks doctor!
No problem :D
The procrastination is strong tonight
lol
So I think I got it now... Just gotta wait for the v2 test to print. But that'll be for morning me to see. Thankfully I don't need to be exact for the final either -- going to be printing the final version in TPU, so it can stretch if I'm a bit off
But now is bed time....
g'night!
hm really needed more contrast
g'evening!
Sure
CRT out of some old optometry equipment and an ammo can so far, still have to mount the PCB inside the can but the tube mounting is finished
Ooh, fun
going to drive the beam directly from a Pico with PWM for intensity and 16-bit DACs, loaded 8 bits at a time for X and Y deflection
That's a good idea
then I'll normally have my input signals get sent straight to the vertical deflection when in oscilloscope mode and because I am driving the beam directly I can do raster mode, oscilloscope mode, or vector mode
but then if I want to sample something into memory it will route through the Pico's ADC's and back out through the vertical deflection buffer
and if I just want to display it, I'll have the beam sweep trigger on a programmable voltage after the beam has finished sweeping
Wow now thats fallout material.
indeed, it even has the middle of the vault tec logo burned into the screen haha
not from the actual logo, but from the targeting circle it had while in the equipment it came from
@dusty citrus what do the calipers look like?
š
i did some thinking on my console.
and i decided she needs one more thing next to the audio.
oh and if I get it working right, I can get this to display a monochrome VGA signal with the beam sweep controlled by the pico reading off the sync pulses
i decided i'm going to make a open source gpu ala ps1 style..
(originally was composite input)
@static flare not sure, the ones in question belong to @delicate stream but best guess is @wooden schooner 's pic above
anyway I'm gonna get going, got some major relaxing to do...turns out cutting a non-square hole in an ammo can is really hard work
anyone think 4MB of v-ram is enough for a handheld at 320 x 240?
what's the color depth?
